The thunder is hitting HBO Max.

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is arriving on the streamer, which will soon be renamed to Max, on May 23. Although the DC Comics adaptation opened at No. 1 at the box office, it flew in lower than its predecessor, barely cracking a $30 million debut.

Starring Zachary Levi, the film sees Billy Batson (Levi and Asher Angel) and his foster siblings using their transformative powers to take on the Daughters of Atlas, who threaten to destroy the world. Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren round out the film’s cast, while David F. Sandberg returns as director.

In addition to a disappointing debut (particularly notable considering its hefty $125 million production budget), critical responses are also a step down from the praise that met the original. “Fury of the Gods” currently carries a 26% approval rating from top critics on review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. The film also earned a “B+” rating through research firm Cinema Score, a decline from the first film’s “A” grade.

“The villains are defeated, the mythology is fulfilled, but the real story here is that a superhero saga that seemed to hold out possibilities of lifesize quirkiness and delight winds up getting squashed into the shape of any other superhero franchise,” Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in his review. “The force that does that is the true power that needs to be defeated.”

If you’re not interested in signing up for an HBO Max account to stream the film come May, it’s also currently available to rent or buy on-demand on Prime Video, home to the original film. Prime Video also offers a 7-day free trial to HBO Max for those looking for a more affordable way to binge both films.

Save a few bad impressions by Warner Bros. Discovery streaming guru JB Perrette, “Max” made a pretty good first impression.

Excellent content aside, HBO Max was not a universally beloved streaming service. Don’t take our word for it; Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels publicly copped to as much in January. In a Variety survey published Tuesday, HBO Max came in as both the second-best and second-worst user interface among the major streamers. (You figure that one out.)

Results included complaints about basic features, including rewind buttons and virtual keyboard design, along with bugs and stalling. “I consistently find the [user experience] of HBO Max angering,” one of the survey’s 40 anonymous interviews offered.

Inciting anger is never a desirable feature, but HBO Max will soon be no more. On May 23, the streamer will be replaced by a brand-new platform that was built from the ground up. (By comparison, HBO Max replaced HBO Now, which replaced HBO Go, which replaced linear HBO for many cord-cutters.). Max will consist of all new tech, a new look (now it’s blue!), and a new name — well, sort of.

The future combination of HBO Max and Discovery+ will be known as “Max,” we officially learned on Wednesday — but you, like us, probably knew that well in advance. Nevertheless, in the spirit of introduction and celebration, reporters were invited to the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California to witness the live-streamed, hour-long reveal (with a media Q&A to follow).

Of course, Max won’t just replace HBO Max. It will include much of Discovery+, a service that is a whole lot less prestigious (and less expensive) than HBO Max. According to Variety’s curated poll, not many Hollywood insiders use Discovery+. (Don’t “@” this reporter and HGTV superfan.) “This is the one streaming service that can get away with a mediocre [user interface] because the service and its content are so niche,” said one respondent.

That niche-ness — and the relative cheapness — led management in February to make an about-face decision on the future of the Discovery-branded platform, the home to popular home, food, and “90 Day Fiancé” programming. Originally, Warner Bros. planned to scrap the Discovery+ app and fully integrate the programming into Max. Now, there will be options for a standalone Discovery+ and the bundle with Max. (There will still be no HBO-programming-only streaming option, and Max will not have all Discovery+ content.)

Wednesday’s event was a long time coming. The company pushed back combining the streamers into a brand-new platform several times since WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. merged last April. Wiedenfels in January acknowledged it’s been “a little frustrating” waiting for Max to take shape.

“But the reality is, you only get one chance for a first impression with the consumer, and we’re not going to launch something that is not adequate,” he said at the Citi Communications, Media & Entertainment Conference.

If the presentation that introduced the world to Max is any indication, the Max experience will be superior to the HBO Max experience. There were no live-stream hiccups; unless you count Warner Bros. Discovery streaming boss JB Perrette’s Bugs Bunny and Joey Tribbiani impressions. Those weren’t, let’s say, HBO quality. Or unless you count that weird moment when, at the very end of the presentation, WBD president & CEO David Zaslav referred to the upcoming “Harry Potter” series as being “on HBO.” You mean Max, David, the giant (blue!) logo behind you.

What’s in a name, anyway? (Hopefully not much, if your name is now “Max.”) Credit Warner Bros. Discovery for keeping Max prices the same — for now, at least — as HBO Max. Ridicule the name all you want, but you can’t say  the value hasn’t changed. If you don’t want to watch the Max (via HGTV) Barbie Dream Home tie-in to the Warner Bros. “Barbie” movie, don’t; you’re not really paying for it.

In addition to plenty of (select) Discovery programming, Max will also have more that HBO Max lacks: personalized recommendations upon finishing a series or film, kids profiles with functional parental controls, and a rebuilt downloads feature. Plus, the new app’s response and video-start times will be 20-30 percent faster, Perrette said (in his own voice, thank goodness). Also faster will be a Warner Bros. Discovery engineer’s ability to revise Max’s pricing pages to reflect promotions, for example. Changes that once (somehow) took “weeks” (!) in the past will now take all of a day, he said.

And then there is this, a fix for the single-weirdest churn problem we’ve heard any streamer publicly address about their platform: Evidently, HBO Max’s billing ability was so poor that half of its U.S. customer cancellations were due to a user’s credit card expiring, a checking account with insufficient funds, or some other bizarre “involuntary” exit. Perrette vows the new streamer will be better able to alert uses of billing issues, both via notification and by email.

Wow, this app really does it all. We should call it…

Save a few bad impressions by Warner

There are still three upcoming DC movies to look forward to this year following the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, but from there, the DC Extended Universe as we know it will end, and from the ashes will rise the new DC Universe. While aspects of the DCEU will be retained, such as John Cena and Viola Davis continuing to respectively play Peacemaker and Amanda Waller, there will be a lot of new actors coming into the continuity being overseen by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. The first round of casting for this next era has finally come in, and it all revolves around the animated series Creature Commandos.

It was first reported by The Wrap that Frank Grillo, known for playing Crossbones in the MCU, will play Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos. To be clear, this is not Joel Kinsman being recast, as he played Rick Flag Jr., the son of Grillo’s character, in Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad. Then Collider shared that the rest of the main cast will also consist of Sean Gunn as both G.I. Robot and Weasel (whom we knew would be back), Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein and Steve Agee as John Economos. Both Weasel and Economos were previously seen in The Suicide Squad, with the latter also appearing in Peacemaker and cameoing in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

NFL Network’s “NFL 360” and NBC’s coverage of the XXIV Olympic Winter Games led the nomination pack, at ten each, for this year’s 44th annual Sports Emmy Awards. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the ceremony, which takes place at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall on Monday, May 22.

Previously announced: Bryant Gumbel will receive the lifetime achievement award for his role in sports journalism.

“Today we honor these esteemed nominees and celebrate those who bring the thrill of competitive sports into our lives on a daily basis,” said Adam Sharp, president & CEO, NATAS. “We are excited by the extraordinary quality of this year’s submissions and equally excited by the opportunity to honor this year’s Lifetime Achievement honoree, Bryant Gumbel, celebrating his more than five decades of sports broadcasting excellence.”

Nominations were announced in 47 categories, including studio host, event analyst, live special and live series, as well as documentary, journalism, public service content and Esports categories. Other top nominees include 2022 NCAA March Madness, with eight nods; 2022 FIFA World Cup (seven), ESPN’s “Sportscenter” (six) and Fox’s coverage of Super Bowl LVII (six). ESPN led all networks, with 42 nominations.

billy woods’ great gift as a rapper is his ability to manipulate scale. He’s the kind of writer who can make a trip to the corner store feel like an epic poem or locate one person’s solitary paranoia at an otherwise jumping concert. “FaceTime,” the lead single from, Maps, his upcoming album with Los Angeles producer Kenny Segal, examines life as a touring musician from angles big and small. Trips to cities like Bratislava are interrupted by alerts for Zoom couples therapy sessions; woods notices the pandemonium surrounding a Playboi Carti concert (“Afterparty packed like Parliament/Ass cheeks and cheekbones, lips slightly parted”) while “smokin’ alone in a cardigan” and thinking about loved ones thousands of miles away. Segal’s steady drums, horns, and chimes give the song a dreamlike quality that matches woods’ stark writing, which comes from a fly on the wall who’s seen and been through way too much.

At Tuesday’s New York City premiere of Nat Geo’s documentary “Wild Life,” Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, shed light on his 2022 decision to donate the entire apparel brand, worth $3 billion, to a trust dedicated to fighting the climate crisis.

“I’m kind of pessimistic about the fate of this planet,” Chouinard said. “We’ve been giving one percent of our sales for a long time. We’ve given away $200 or $300 million over the years, but I’m always thinking, ‘What more can I do?”

Directed by Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, “Wild Life” chronicles the decades-long efforts by conservationist Kris Tompkins and her late husband and the North Face founder, Doug Tompkins, to create national parks throughout Chile and Argentina. The couple helped Chouinard, who appears in the doc, create and run Patagonia.

Chouinard, who joined Vasarhelyi, Chin and Tompkins onstage after the MoMA screening, added that his decision to give the planet $3 billion also had to do with his two children, who have “simple lives” and no desire to inherit Patagonia.

“When we found a way to basically make earth our stockholder, it seemed real logical,” he continued. “It’s a way for Patagonia as a company to give a lot more money. We’ve given away $33 million since November. We’re going to give away another $40 or $50 [million] within the next couple months. It’s a pretty good system. I can tell you this: it’s not a burden. It’s really a lot of fun.”

As with their previous films “Free Solo” and “Meru,” Chin and Vasarhelyi’s “Wild Life” explores the world of elite climbers – in which Chin is a leading figure – mixing adventure footage, shot in the Tompkins’ private nature reserve Patagonia Park, with interviews and archival footage.

Chin, who climbed with both Doug Tompkins and Chouinard, was keen on making “Wild Life.” Tompkins on the other hand was wary.

“Jimmy just started showing up,” she explained. “I’d say what are you doing? And he would say, ‘I’m just going to film this stuff and we will see if something happens to it.’ Finally, it began to take shape and they asked me if I would be interested in something like this. I was reticent at first but then I thought if there was ever going to be a film about our story it would be with Jimmy and Chai. So I just put my life in their hands.

Vasarhelyi was also initially hesitant about the project, which will have a limited theatrical release beginning April 14 and stream on Disney+ May 25.

“He was like, we really should make a film about my mentors, the icons of the outdoor industry,” she recalled of her husband’s passion for the project. “But I don’t climb. I don’t ski. I don’t really go outside. So I was like, no way. Oh, no,” Vasarhelyi said.

Eventually the filmmaker came around and found herself captivated by Kris Tompkins’ life story and how she handled life after the death of her husband.

“It just became so compelling, this idea of Kris finding (her way),” Vasarhelyi said. “We made this film for our kids. Climate change is the existential question of our children’s generation. And this is a story that says very clearly, put one foot in front of the other and just try because trying matters.”

A Wilfrid Laurier University professor and her team recently travelled to the Northwest Territories to help install lifesaving technology on a lake vital to those who reside in a remote village.

Łutsël K’é, a small village which is home to around 300 people, is located on Great Slave Lake and is only accessible via air, boat or ice.

Many of those that live in the First Nations community rely on hunting as a food source and need to travel across frozen waterways to reach hunting grounds, according to a release from Laurier University.

It says that ice conditions across the territory have been changing as northern areas of Canada are warming at a rate of three to four times faster than the rest of the planet.

“What we’ve noticed in the last 10 years is that it’s taking longer and longer for our big lake to freeze, and we use that lake quite extensively in the winter months,” stated Iris Catholique, manager of Thaidene Nëné, a local environmental group.

“Waiting longer and longer for the lake to freeze impedes our ability to access our traditional hunting grounds and provide for our people.”

The university says that the issues have left snowmobiles to get stuck in the ice or sliding into the water, and in 2019, it is believed that three residents who went missing had gone through the ice while attempting to traverse Great Slave Lake.

This led local officials to contact Laurier professor Homa Kheyrollah Pour, who also serves as Canada Research Chair in Remote Sensing of Environmental Change.

As part of their research, Kheyrollah Pour and her students focus on the cold region water systems and how they are reacting to climate change.

In January, Kheyrollah Pour and her team travelled to Łutsël K’é to work with Thaidene Nëné to install sensors on Great Slave Lake which will allow them to monitor ice thickness on the body of water.
The recordings will occur every 15 minutes, allowing area residents to know when it is safe to travel on the lake.

Arash Rafat, a grad student at the school, also spent a week in the remote village helping locals install the sensors as well as providing instruction on how to operate them.

“The Guardians selected locations on Great Slave Lake based on safety concerns and we travelled there together to teach them how to install the sensors and collect measurements,” says Rafat.

“We talked about the science behind the technology and paired it with what the Guardians already know about the ice and the land.”

Warner Bros. Discovery has unveiled Max, its big consolidated streamer that will pull in content from Discovery+ and supersede the three-year-old HBO Max service. So what does this mean for current HBO Max customers?

One big change: Following the launch of Max, all 4K Ultra HD content will be available only to subscribers of the new service’s most expensive tier, Max Ultimate Ad Free ($19.99/month). Currently, HBO Max’s ad-free plan includes a selection of 4K programming.

Otherwise, HBO Max customers mainly will see a boatload of new content and enhanced features in Max, which is adding programming from Discovery brands like HGTV, Discovery Channel and Food Network. Warner Bros. Discovery said existing HBO Max subscribers will have access to Max at the same price as their HBO Max subscription ($15.99/month without ads; $9.99/month with ads). However, the regular Max ad-free tier will offer two concurrent streams, whereas HBO Max has offered up to three. The Max Ultimate Ad Free plan will offer up to four simultaneous streams.

Warner Bros. Discovery said it expects Max will be available on the same devices as HBO Max.

Additionally, HBO Max subscribers will still have access to their current plan features for a minimum of six months following the launch of Max. HBO Max subscribers’ profiles, settings, watch history, “Continue Watching,” and “My List” items will also migrate to Max so they can pick up streaming where they left off.

If you get HBO with your cable or satellite TV package, you may have access to Max at no extra cost, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The company is listing which pay-TV providers will support Max at this link; right now, the site doesn’t indicate which tier will be available to cable and satellite customers.

The company said Max Ultimate will have an expanded catalog of content available in 4K UHD including from franchises such as “Game of Thrones,” “The Last of Us,” “Harry Potter,” “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Dark Knight Trilogy” and more. In addition, all Warner Bros. movies released this year and in the future will also be available in 4K UHD when they arrive on Max following their theatrical windows, the company announced.

The company wanted to keep the price points of Max in line with HBO Max “because we think it’s unbelievable value for everything you get at that price,” JB Perrette, president and CEO of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, told reporters at the launch event.

“There’s no streaming service in the world that has more higher-end consumers than HBO Max,” he said. “And so our view was, let’s not try and take more money out of the wallets of people who can maybe less afford it. But rather get them to sample it at a great price. And if there are people who want higher-quality [4K video], who want all the bells and whistles and who can afford it, we’ve got a price for you and it’s $4 more than the $15.99 [per month].”

In announcing the Max service, Perrette said, “This new brand signals an important change from two narrower products, HBO Max and Discovery+, to our broader content offering and consumer proposition. While each product offered something for some people, Max will have a broad array of quality choices for everybody.”

Current HBO Max subscribers can visit this link for more information. The company said Discovery+, currently priced at $4.99/month with ads and $6.99/month without ads in the U.S., will continue as a standalone service.

Warner Bros. Discovery said it ended 2022 with 96.1 million streaming customers worldwide, inclusive of HBO Max, Discovery+ and other services. The company doesn’t break out the number of HBO or HBO Max subscribers separately.

Priyanka Chopra to Katrina Kaif, here are

On the heels of a new Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit opening in Los Angeles — one that purports to get to the truth of who the late artist really was — news regarding Basquiat forgeries, shown in a different exhibition in 2022 and unrelated to the Basquiat estate, has come to light.

Los Angeles auctioneer Michael Barzman on Tuesday admitted lying to the FBI last year about Basquiat forgeries exhibited in 2022 at the Orlando Museum of Art in Florida and to helping create the fake artworks.

Barzman, 45, of North Hollywood, agreed to plead guilty to the felony on Tuesday. In court documents filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, Barzman admitted creating 20 to 30 fake Basquiat artworks together with a man identified in the documents only as “J.F.” and that the two agreed to sell the forgeries and split the profits. According to the filings, J.F. spent between five and 30 minutes knocking out each work, and Barzman sold them on eBay. J.F. has not been charged yet, according to a representative for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California.

The fake artworks ended up on view in the Orlando exhibition, “Heroes & Monsters: Jean-Michel Basquiat,” which opened in February 2022. The FBI raided the exhibition in June and seized all 25 works. The exhibit was to set to close on June 30, and the works were slated to next show in Italy.

Regarding the provenance of the works, the museum said the owners of the art had stated that they’d been found in an L.A. storage unit in 2012 that had belonged to the late Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Thaddeus Mumford. As the false story went: The works had been created in 1982, when Basquiat was living at art dealer Larry Gagosian’s Venice Beach home and preparing for a new exhibition but that the artist instead sold the works to Mumford.

The OMA board fired the museum’s director and chief executive, Aaron De Groft, on June 28.

Regarding Tuesday’s news, OMA board Chairman Mark Elliott said in a statement that the “Orlando Museum of Art awaits the investigation’s conclusion and hopes it brings justice to all victims.”

“In the wake of this ongoing investigation,” Elliott added, “the Orlando Museum of Art has recommitted itself to its mission to provide excellence in the visual arts with its exhibitions, collections, and educational programming.”

“Basquiat lived with me for over a year and painted a lot of wonderful paintings then, but that has nothing to do with these paintings that were obviously false,” Gagosian told The Times. “It sounds as if they were just trying to fabricate this ridiculous story. The [forged] paintings [at OMA] spoke for themselves — they were just not right.”

Meantime, the Basquiat exhibition that recently opened downtown at the Grand LA provides more information about the artist’s time spent living in L.A. between 1982 and 1984, both in Gagosian’s home and in a Venice Beach studio the artist rented.

The show, “Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure,” is curated and executive-produced by the artist’s sisters, Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux. When contacted by The Times, Basquiat and Heriveaux declined to comment about the Barzman news.

The investigation is still open, and a court date for Barzman is forthcoming.

On the heels of a new

Last week, I questioned the direction of She-Hulk, as the pieces on the board didn’t fit any endgame I could conceptualize.

During the season finale, I learned the explanation for my confusion. So, let’s talk about She-Hulk episode 1-9, the one that defies conventional recapping.

The Savage She-Hulk

Image: Marvel

The season finale tips its hand before the show technically begins. We start with a passionate tribute to the 1970s series, The Hulk.

These opening credits position Jennifer Walters as the modern David Banner. She means well and does good, but there’s a monster lurking within.

At times, she transforms into THE SAVAGE SHE-HULK!

Image: Marvel

This bit absolutely slays. At least three different moments are worthy of additional mention.

First, the show plays on her frustrating dating life as a millennial and shows Todd, the rich weirdo, as a potential paramour.

So, we know this segment isn’t coming from inside Jen’s brain. She hates Todd.

Image: Marvel

Also, she spends part of her free time replying to trolls on the internet. Her communication tool of choice is apparently an IBM PC Jr. keyboard from 1984.

Finally, her retorts to the trolls won’t win her any writing awards. The text shows HulkKing saying, “SHE-HULK IS STUPID!!!!”

Jen’s reply is, “YOU’RE STUPID.” And thus, we have set the stage for the entire episode. I’m not even joking.

Image: Marvel

Seriously, that’s a certain kind of summary for the entire episode. It’s gonna be Jen believing HulkKing is stupid and arguing that point in front of a computer.

These opening credits are profoundly brilliant. I’m in awe.

The Shoe on the Other Foot

Image: Marvel

One of the high points of the early part of She-Hulk involved the parole hearing of Emil Blonsky, aka the Abomination.

The superpowered being sat in a prison cell and debated whether he had changed while his attorney, Jennifer Walters, stood outside and argued his case.

At the start of episode nine, the oversized shoe is on the other foot.

Image: Marvel

Walters now finds herself imprisoned in the same cage, the only one capable of stopping a superpowered being.

Her friends/co-workers appear to discuss her options. Mallory Book informs Jen of the conditions. Like Blonsky, she must agree never to turn into her monster half again.

Sadly, this choice forces her to lose her job, as GLK&H specifically hired She-Hulk, not a normal person.

Image: Marvel

With no other options, Jen moves back in with her parents. It’s less than ideal that she’s sleeping in her childhood bedroom again.

Hilariously, BFF Nikki Ramos looooves the setup and especially Elaine, Jen’s mother. Elaine even texts her a college video of her daughter dancing wildly.

Somehow, this point proves vital to the plot. Nikki takes it upon herself to infiltrate Intelligencia, the nefarious organization that has hurt her friend.

Image: Marvel

Using the dancing video, Nikki pretends to be an incel and quickly gains the attention of HulkKing, who invites her to an Intelligencia gathering.

All this happens at a suspiciously fast pace, but you’ll understand why soon.

Party at Abomination’s Place

Image: Marvel

She-Hulk is tearing through the plot to set up a series of unlikely encounters.

Obviously, Nikki cannot attend an Intelligencia event since she’s a woman. So, Pug goes in her place.

Throughout the party, he pretends to hate women by saying offensive things, thereby earning the trust of the other incels.

Image: Marvel

At some point, rich guy Todd appears and – just as I had predicted several episodes ago! – proves to be a villain. Specifically, he’s the head of Intelligencia.

She-Hulk’s bad date from an early episode has also been the one making her life miserable throughout the season.

Simultaneously, Jen gets sick of feeling like a failure and goes to talk about it with someone who will understand. She heads back to Emil’s new compound.

Image: Marvel

By the 14-minute mark of the episode, not even halfway through, Emil has transformed into the Abomination and revealed that his compound is hosting the Intelligencia event.

Somehow, we’re just getting started.

Nikki and Pug also barge in, revealing that Jen is at an Intelligencia meeting.

Image: Marvel

Then, Todd shoots himself up with some serum created from Jen’s blood. He turns into a Hulk-like being that I’ll call Bro-Hulk for now.

Next, Titania busts through a wall, and then Hulk dives in from outer space or something. It’s a LOT.

Also, I HAVE to mention that Todd believes She-Hulk doesn’t deserve her powers because she didn’t earn them.

Image: Marvel

However, Todd feels he did because he paid a guy to sleep with Jen and steal her blood. Later, he paid scientists to synthesize it into a kind of Super Soldier Serum.

That’s how rich incel Todd earns things. He pays people to do all the work for him. The writers of She-Hulk have a lot to say this week.

Shattering the Fourth Wall

Image: Marvel

In the comics, She-Hulk has been breaking the fourth wall since the 1970s, whereas Deadpool didn’t even exist in 1991. In other words, he’s stealing her schtick.

For this reason, I cannot be surprised by what happens next, even though it’s so bizarre that describing it borders on impossible to believe is real.

Hulk misreads the situation and attacks Abomination, who is trying to defend his actions to Jen.

Source: Marvel Studios

Meanwhile, she’s angry at her client for violating his parole terms and refusing to apologize.

Todd having superpowers isn’t great, either, and Titania’s attacks feel haphazard and random.

Jen stares directly at the camera and states, “None of these storylines make any sense.” And she’s right.

Titania

Photo: Marvel

At this point, She-Hulk turns into something akin to WandaVision. Yes, I’m serious.

Walters leaves the fight scene by – you’re not gonna believe this – going to the Marvel menu on Disney+.

She exits the She-Hulk panel and enters one for Marvel Studios Assembled. This is a real thing that happens, people.

Image: Marvel

As She-Hulk, Jen roams through the Disney/Marvel campus and enters the She-Hulk production office. Then, she walks into the writer’s room where a terrible season two pitch is happening.

Jennifer Gao, (legitimately) the show’s creator, sits beside this person as he speaks. Then, another writer asks She-Hulk if everything is okay.

Image: Marvel

After some back and forth over the stupid storylines at play, She-Hulk learns that K.E.V.I.N. is controlling it all. So, she leaves to speak with K.E.V.I.N.

People without closed captioning would presume this means Kevin Feige, head of Marvel. But I’m spelling it correctly as K.E.V.I.N.

Image: Marvel

Yes, the closed captioning accidentally gives away the joke here. There’s a sentient robot running the MCU, and Jen wants to speak with it.

I’ll give you a moment to process all this.

Ready for More?

Image: Marvel

After signing an NDA, She-Hulk beats up a few security guards and makes her way to the place where K.E.V.I.N. resides.

The acronym stands for “Knowledge Enhanced Visual Interconnectivity Nexus.” It’s a floating three-eyed fire hydrant with arms. Or something like that.

K.E.V.I.N.’s appearance is the appropriate level of visually hysterical for the moment. It’s what someone in 1962 would have thought a sentient robot would look like.

Image: Marvel

Understandably, She-Hulk has questions.

What follows is a back-and-forth discussion about the series, the MCU, and even a critique of ways that Marvel could have done better.

While K.E.V.I.N. may not look like Kevin Feige, She-Hulk definitely treats him as such.

Image: Marvel

Of course, She-Hulk must switch to Jen because “you are very expensive.” Also, “the visual effects team has moved on to another project.”

These are spectacular jokes that wink at the audience and all the criticisms of She-Hulk, some of which I’ve made.

K.E.V.I.N. brags about his near-perfect stories while acknowledging that some are better than others.

Image: Marvel

Jen correctly wonders if She-Hulk is still a lawyer show. K.E.V.I.N. indicates that is, and so she makes her closing argument.

The superheroine argues that the story involved the sudden change in her life “right when I was learning to be both Jen and She-Hulk.”

Surprisingly, the K.E.V.I.N. proves willing to listen to new ideas. So, Jen takes away Todd’s newfound abilities because he’s the villain, not his powers.

Image: Marvel

She wants Bruce gone as well, which leads to another great joke about how Bruce will explain why he was…but Jen cuts the report off before it can finish. So now we’ll never know!

Finally, Jen wants accountability for Emil…and she “would not mind seeing Daredevil again. A woman has needs.”

We’re watching a writer’s room pitch as actual dialogue. It’s amazing.

The End of the Ride

Image: Marvel

She-Hulk’s changes on the fly end the big battle at Emil’s compound. Instead, it’s daytime when the police are arresting Todd for being the head of Intelligencia.

For her part, Jen promises to sue Todd for all his crimes, like stealing her blood and invading her privacy and whatnot.

The closing argument has worked quite well, although K.E.V.I.N. never answered the most important question, “When are we getting the X-Men?”

Source: Marvel

Daredevil does appear, though. Also, Blonsky agrees to the “karmic price” of returning to jail for ten years. So, he shows the penance Jen had wanted.

Of course, I’ll go ahead and spoil the post-credits scene by saying that Wong (without Madisynn) ports in and saves him. They’ll be at Kamar-Taj.

The bigger surprise happens at the family picnic, though. Murdock, who only stays for the week, gets peppered with questions about how much money he makes.

Image: Marvel

Jen’s parents are ready to marry them off and have them start a family.

The shocker happens when Bruce appears. Presuming this is canon – and I have no reason to think otherwise – Bruce reveals his son, Skaar.

World War Hulk definitely looks like it’s happening, folks. But this is the story of Jennifer Walters, the She-Hulk, not the Bruce Banner Hulk.

Source: Marvel Studios

While the line of dialogue doesn’t happen at the end, Jennifer Walters does explain her newfound dual persona, though.

“That’s what Hulks do. We smash things. Bruce smashes buildings. I smash fourth walls and bad endings…and sometimes Matt Murdock.” Aww, yeah!

Image: Marvel

Really, I can’t think of a more fitting way to end a recap of this season. It’s intentionally messy and stubborn and nonconformist and an absolute blast.

I’m surprised to say that She-Hulk rivals WandaVision in its daring and bravado. This is definitely an A+ television season.

DC Studio co-lead James Gunn announced eight new cast members for the first project in his DCU reboot.

Creature Commandos Gets Its Cast

With Creature Commandos set to be the first project of the DCU’s upcoming reboot, James Gunn confirmed eight new cast members for the series.

Here are the actors who will be voicing their characters in animation and, presumably, bringing them to life in live-action as well:

Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

DC/Frank Grillo

Frank Grillo was the first actor to officially board the DCU, where he’ll be embodying Rick Flag Sr.

In the comics, the character has ties to The Suicide Squad, much like his son. Assumedly, in the upcoming animated show and future projects, he’ll be leading the Creature Commandos in some fashion.

Hopefully, the actor’s new role in the DCU will better match his expectations compared to his time as Crossbones in the MCU.

David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein

Frankenstein, David Harbour
DC/David Harbour

David Harbour only recently joined the MCU as Red Guardian, but the actor is already playing for both teams.

The character’s origins in the comics are confusing, but, as his name suggests, he is essentially meant to be a play on Frankenstein himself. So it’s easy to see how Harbour would almost certainly enjoy getting a crack at this role.

Indira Varma as the Bride

DC/Indira Varma
DC/Indira Varma

Indira Varma, who was recently seen as Tala Durith in Obi-Wan Kenobi, will bring the Bride to life.

While her existence only began for the sole purpose of being a companion to Frankenstein, the Bride holds different ideas of what she wants to do with her newfound life.

Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorous

DC/Alan Tudyk
DC/Alan Tudyk

While often portrayed as a Batman villain, Dr. Phosphorus will be a key member of the Creature Commandos—and the iconic Alan Tudyk will voice him.

The character is a radioactive supervillain whose body chemistry was fundamentally altered after being exposed to a reactor core. Living up to his new namesake, his body burns like an eternal flame.

Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic

Maria Bakalova
Maria Bakalova

Maria Bakalova made a small splash as Cosmo in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and will be making an even bigger one when Vol. 3 releases in May. Good thing she already has another big role in the books to ride that momentum.

Unlike the rest of the cast, little is known about her character, Princess Ilana Rostovic. However, it seems that Gunn created an entirely original role for the actress.

Sean Gunn as both GI Robot & Weasel

GI Robot, Weseal, Sean Gunn
DC/Sean Gunn

Unsurprisingly, James Gunn gave his brother double duty in the new franchise.

On top of returning as Weasel from The Suicide Squad, he’ll also bring GI Robot to life. GI Robot will undoubtedly bring with him lots of comparisons to Doom Patrol‘s Robotman, but the two are different characters. In Creature Commandos, this bot is one specifically created for strange and deadly missions like those the titular team takes on.

Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky

Zoe Chao is set to be Nina Mazursky, a scientist for SHADE who actually made the first iteration of the Creature Commandos.

After fixing some of her initial mistakes, she makes a second iteration of the team, resulting in the leading cast of this project. Mazursky included herself in these experiments, turning her into an amphibian woman.

Steve Agee as the returning John Economos

Like Sean Gunn, Steve Agee will return to the DCU in an already-established role.

It’s not King Shark—yet. Instead, Agee will be back as agent John Economos. The character was first seen in The Suicide Squad, played a key role in Peacemaker, and then got a nice cameo in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

At the end of March, the Italian Data Protection Authority (the “Garante”), announced that OpenAI’s fancy new ChatGPT software would imminently be blocked from use within the European nation over concerns that ChatGPT’s training and function violate the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). On Wednesday, the Garante published a list of necessary steps OpenAI will have to take by the end of April if Italy is to lift its temporary limitation on the processing of its user data.

“OpenAI will have to draft and make available, on its website, an information notice describing the arrangements and logic of the data processing required for the operation of ChatGPT along with the rights afforded to data subjects,” the Garante announced. Additionally, Italian users must be shown said notice and will have to declare that they are over the age of 18 prior to the completion of their registrations. What’s more, the company will be required to age gate the site to filter out users under the age of 18 by the end of September.

The Garante is also demanding that the company enact “easily accessible tools to allow non-users to exercise their right to object to the processing of their personal data,” per Wednesday’s release. “The same right will have to be afforded to users if legitimate interest is chosen as the legal basis for processing their data.”

Finally, OpenAI must by May, 31st run “through radio, TV, newspapers and the Internet” an ad campaign informing the public about their data collection methods and how Italians’ personal information will be used to train the company’s algorithms. In all, OpenAI has just 18 days to get all of its regulatory ducks in a row before the regulator implements additional penalties.

Warner Bros. Discovery will soon give HBO Max a bit of TLC—and HGTV, Food Network, and Lifetime. After a steady stream of news on the merger between the HBO Max and Discovery+, the company unveiled its official plans for the combined streaming service, which will launch on May 23.

Executives with the company unveiled the official change at a press event today, in conjunction with launching the new site at www.max.com.

“From the biggest superheroes to real life champions; from culture-shaping dramas to taste-shaping entertainment; from fantastical realms to the realest of worlds, Max will offer an unrivaled range of choice,” says JB Perrette, president and CEO of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery. “This new brand signals an important change from two narrower products, HBO Max and Discovery+, to our broader content offering and consumer proposition. While each product offered something for some people, Max will have a broad array of quality choices for everybody.”

With the $16/month price point, the combined app will cost no more than a HBO Max ad-free subscription after the solo service increased its pricing earlier this year.

The three subscription plans will break down as so, per Variety:

  • Max Ad-Lite ($9.99/month or $99.99/year): Two concurrent streams, 1080p HD resolution, no offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality
  • Max Ad Free ($15.99/month or $149.99/year): Two concurrent streams, 1080p HD, up to 30 offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality
  • Max Ultimate Ad Free ($19.99/month or $199.99/year): Four concurrent streams, up to 4K Ultra HD resolution, 100 offline downloads, Dolby Atmos sound quality

Warner Bros. Discovery’s name choice reflects the company’s desire to minimize HBO’s brand of high-quality programming in fear of scaring off Discovery users addicted to trash reality television. Settling on the name Max not only feels lazy, but has created something that will be nearly impossible to Google. We have the sneaking suspicion users will still find themselves typing “HBO Max” into any search engine to find what they’re actually looking for when it comes to the streaming app. Meanwhile, Discovery+ will remain a standalone service at the price of $6.99/month.

The Delaware judge overseeing the Fox News vs. Dominion case held a salty Wednesday pre-trial hearing, sharply scolding the defendant’s lawyers for withholding critical information about Rupert Murdoch’s role as a corporate officer at the cable network and suggesting that sanctions are on the table.

Dominion Voting Systems argued that during its two-year legal tangle over its defamation claims, Fox failed to disclose that the top Murdoch was an executive chair at Fox News. The plaintiffs’ lawyers told Judge Eric Davis that with that information, it could have obtained a significant amount of additional documents from Fox News during discovery.

The judge agreed – and said he will consider sanctioning Fox News lawyers defending the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit. Davis, who has made headlines with critical decisions and dishy comments during the pre-trial phase, openly shared his doubts about the trustworthiness of lawyers for Fox News after learning of the discrepancy.

“What do I do with attorneys who aren’t straightforward with me?,” Davis asked. “I need people to tell me the truth … and by the way, an omission is a lie.”

Dominion said Fox steadfastly maintained during discovery that Fox News’ corporate officers were CEO Suzanne Scott, COO and CFO Joe Dorrego and President and Executive Editor Jay Wallace – but a new list Fox sent on Easter Sunday added Murdoch.

Fox says Murdoch disclosed his corporate role in his widely-read deposition – and noted that it’s been publicly available information for years. But Fox attorney Dan Webb also said neither he nor Murdoch necessarily knew the mogul was considered an executive chair at the network he founded.

Davis wasn’t buying any of it.

“You … [have a] credibility problem,” the judge said.

But Davis also clarified that he is “not mad” – and chose not to rule Wednesday on how to proceed. Instead, he said, he would take some time to decide how to sanction Fox, and did not elaborate on what that could entail.

Davis also handed a small defeat to Dominion on Wednesday, declining to de-couple Fox News and Fox Corp., which will remain consolidated as defendants.

Jai Paul’s infamously leaked album, Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones), is finally getting a vinyl release. XL Recordings is issuing 3,000 copies of the record, available starting tomorrow (April 13) at 11 a.m. Eastern. The label revealed the news via a 24-hour countdown on Paul’s website. You’re You is a playful little thing, almost an experimental thought more than a short film. But even with a streamlined runtime of fewer than five minutes, co-writers/co-directors/stars Tara Erickson and Skyler Caleb have managed something cheeky and wholly engaging.

The setup is simple: A man (Caleb) and a woman (Erickson) are having a drink during a first date when he suddenly remembers that their meeting was foretold. The man knows he and the woman are destined to fall in love. Yet, it seems the relationship is also doomed to failure.

“…their meeting was foretold. The man knows he and the woman are destined to fall in love.”

Even with such a thin plot, every minute oozes charm. The acting is solid, and the two characters feel real. Moreover, the film has an unfussy quality about its tone that draws the viewer in. You’re You works so well, in fact, that it’s a wonder it wasn’t turned into something more substantial. However, the closing act opts for a bit of absurd humour. It works well enough, but it also stands in the place of something that could have been even more significant.

Still, the best trick that You’re You pulls is a quiet acknowledgment of the human condition and all of its foibles. Everything worthwhile ends, but it is the enjoyment of life, not the burden of endings, where we find meaning. Likewise, this drama is short and might end too soon, but it is well worth the time it takes to watch.

Plenty of ink has been spent linking Joe Biden’s win in 2020 with Black voters. It’s no exaggeration to credit his nomination to a unified Black electorate in South Carolina’s primary, thanks in no small measure to the clout of Rep. Jim Clyburn’s endorsement in a state where more than half of Democratic turnout was Black. The throughline continues to that November, when Biden’s win over Donald Trump came thanks to that slice of voters who remained loyal to the former Vice President—and deeply hostile to the man he was facing. If he wins again next year, Biden’s final act in public life could be the surest flex of Black political power in decades.

But, quietly, there have been some rumblings inside Democratic circles that Biden needs to do more to shore up his position with Black voters. While polls show almost half of all Democrats would prefer he hang up his Air Force One bomber jacket after one term, his support remains far stronger among Black voters. And yet, even that number may be going ever so wobbly. We are talking about movement on the fringes of a mainstay of Democratic politics, for sure, but recent elections have shown that even the slightest gradation matters. Biden’s favorability ratings among Black voters have shifted from 84% right after he took office in 2021 to 74% at the end of March 2023, according to YouGov/Economist polling. (That’s still better than Biden’s 46% favorable rating at the start of his term among white voters, which has since slipped to 40%.) Outside super PACs and friendly-to-Biden organizations have also picked up on these blips, both in polling and in focus groups in battleground states and are starting to figure out how to connect with Black voters.

Historically, to be candid, Republicans have done themselves no favors in pursuing or persuading Black voters, and there are few reasons to think that is going to be quick to change. No, not even Sen. Tim Scott’s announcement on Wednesday that he would form a presidential exploratory committee—a tangible step that allows the lone Black Republican in the Senate to raise and spend money for an eventual White House campaign—is likely to change the macro trends there. The Republican Party’s longstanding opposition to a voting rights bill in Congress and their years of antipathy toward and obstruction of Barack Obama are tough to shake. Some Republicans have aligned themselves with Christian nationalists and groups with links to white supremacy. That all makes for a challenging recruiting pitch to Black voters, even if Scott on his own is a charismatic and compelling figure.

Trump remains the nominal candidate to beat for the GOP nomination, and his comparable poll numbers show a deeply unpopular figure among Black voters; his unfavorable number fell to 60% at the end of last month in the YouGov/Economist poll, down from the 93% mark he posted during the summer of 2020. Still, with Biden’s standing among Black voters on ground more like Hillary Clinton’s in 2016 than Biden’s in 2020, it’s worth taking a beat to look at the hard numbers, and consider why.

First, a little history. Since exit polls became part of Election Day data dumps in 1972, no Republican has fared better with Black voters than Richard Nixon, who managed 18% in his ‘72 re-election campaign. No Democrat has captured their party’s nomination without the Black vote since 1992. (Sen. Edward M. Kennedy carried the Black vote in 1980 with 44% of the vote but missed the nomination, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson dominated that bloc during his 1984 and 1988 campaigns.) Put plainly: you can’t win the nomination or the White House as a Democrat without the Black vote.

Biden, facing no serious primary challenges at the moment, is expected to fall nicely into the historical patterns, but the general election might be a different story. Clinton in 2016 carried 88% of the Black vote, a slight swing from four years earlier when the country re-elected its first Black President with 93% of the Black vote. Still, those Black voters were relatively meh when it came to Clinton’s candidacy; Trump didn’t seem quite so bad and had a certain novelty about him. When Biden ran as the nominee in 2020, he carried 87% of the Black vote, according to exit polls, and that was when voters faced a choice whether they wanted another four years of Trump. And, in last year’s midterm elections, Democrats drew the support of 86% of the Black vote.

If all of this sounds statistically negligible, it is. Polling is of course imprecise; a margin of error is built into every survey, after all. And yet, it’s worth remembering that Trump prevailed in 2016 by besting Clinton by about 80,000 votes in just three states. If all holds steady, Biden could well end up in a rematch against Trump, who saw his support among Black voters climb from 8% in 2016 to 12% four years later. That shift wasn’t enough to deny Biden a gig he’s been chasing since his 20s, but it didn’t happen by accident.

Biden’s record on race at this point is decidedly up for debate, too. He made good on his campaign promises to pick a Black woman as a running rate and put one on the Supreme Court, and continues to this day to enjoy the political riches from those moves. But Biden’s efforts to get a comprehensive voting rights measure into law have come up short, his attempts to control gun violence are as stymied as they are frustrating, and it seems like every few weeks an unflattering story about Vice President Kamala Harris—the first woman and first woman of Black and Asian heritage in the job—seems to bandy around Biden’s chums. Go any deeper in Biden’s record and things get sticky.

Read more: How Biden’s Remarks About Police Violence Stack Up to His Actions

To be clear: Biden is expected to keep Black voters as a reliable part of his coalition, and they’re his insulation from an electorate that, despite its increasing diversity, is still about 70% white. But campaigns are decided in small microtrends, and, with roughly 13% of the electorate steadily reporting they are Black, these voters cannot be ignored, especially if their allegiance grows less intense. (Other studies put Black voters’ clout around 20%, well ahead of what exit polls report.)

Biden gets this all too well. It’s why we saw the President release images of his call last week with two Black lawmakers from Tennessee who were expelled for leading a protest against gun violence. It’s why so much of the White House and Cabinet-level travels have made outreach to Black communities part of their agenda. And it’s why, even as Biden continues to delay his actual entrance to the 2024 campaign, he has signaled to his advisers that they’ve got to keep hitting the mark on building a diverse and inclusive team around him. That commitment may be as sincere as any politician’s belief, but it also makes for good politics—and it’s been evident for decades that Biden seldom can count on good luck to be a lengthy visitor.

Peacock is entering the metaverse.

The NBCUniversal-owned streaming service and Meta Platforms Inc. on Wednesday announced that Peacock will be available on the Meta Quest lineup of virtual reality headsets, starting today.

Bringing Peacock to Meta’s VR platform is part of a larger previously announced partnership between the companies, which will see NBCUniversal bring a number of interactive experiences to Meta’s Horizon Worlds and the Meta Avatars Store. Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Monsters and The Office are among the IP coming to Meta’s platforms.

But it will also include Peacock, which will create a virtual TV set within Horizon Worlds, letting users watch scripted shows like Poker Face and live sports like Sunday Night Football through their Meta headsets.

Tied to the launch, the companies are also offering a special Peacock promotion, in which existing Meta Quest users that use Peacock can get three months of Peacock Premium for free, while new buyers of the Meta Quest 2 or Meta Quest Pro can get 1 year of Peacock Premium for free.

“Launching Peacock on Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro meaningfully expands the existing partnership between Meta and NBCUniversal, and offers users more opportunities to experience Peacock’s robust content offering in an immersive VR and streaming experience,” said Annie Luo, EVP, Head of Global Partnerships & Strategic Development. “Whether it be a VR experience with The Office or an iconic film franchise, a live sporting event or the next breakout Peacock original, there’s something for everyone.”

Peacock is not the first streaming service to join Meta’s platforms. YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video already have apps on the immersive platform, letting users cozy up next to their virtual fireplace (or, depending on your home screen, your window floating above earth, or your private beach), and watch their favorite shows.

It’s nearly time to check in to The Continental.

Peacock released a teaser for the John Wick prequel series on Wednesday, which gives a glimpse into the setting for the upcoming project. The trailer also reveals that the series is expected to hit the streamer in September.

While the teaser didn’t give away much in terms of the plot, it did include a first look at some of the principal cast, including Colin Woodell as a young Winston Scott — the hotel manager at The Continental.

The three-part event will explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe through the eyes and actions of Woodell’s young Winston, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne.

Woodell stars alongside Ayomide Adegun, who will portray a young Charon, Peter Greene, who plays Uncle Charlie, Mel Gibson as Cormac, Ben Robson as Frankie, Hubert Point-Du Jour as Miles, Jessica Allain as Lou, Mishel Prada as KD and Nhung Kate as Yen.

Shawn Simmons, Greg Coolidge and Kirk Ward co-created the series. Wayne creator Simmons wrote the first two episodes, and Coolidge and Ward serve as writers and showrunners on The Continental, and executive produce alongside Albert Hughes, Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Chad Stahelski, Derek Kolstad, David Leitch, Simmons, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese and Marshall Persinger. Albert Hughes directs the first and third installment and Charlotte Brandstrom directs the second installment.

The Continental will premiere on Peacock in September 2023. A specific date for the release has not been announced.

There’s a good chance you missed Spin Me Round, the new Alison Brie rom-com, in the wake of Somebody I Used To Know, the other new Alison Brie rom-com. Despite their high-level similarities —same star, same genre (sort of)— these movies are actually quite different in execution. In Spin Me Round, Brie plays Amber, an ambitious yet frustrated middle manager at an Italian chain restaurant (think Olive Garden or Macaroni Grill), who gets selected to go on an all-expenses paid seminar in Italy hosted by the company’s dashing CEO (Alessandro Nivola). Amber’s dreams of an Eat Pray Love or Under The Tuscan Sun style adventure quickly go to pot, though, as she’s forced to navigate increasingly weird encounters with psychotic co-workers (Molly Shannon), the CEO’s enigmatic chief of staff (Aubrey Plaza), and a mansplaining wannabe chef (Tim Heidecker). The tone of director Jeff Baena’s film is all over the map, but if you’re in the mood for something that strikes the balance between madcap, mysterious, and sexy, Spin Me Round will surprise you.

The stereotype is nearly inescapable: Asian parents are withholding and cold. Sometimes it surfaces in earnest; on r/AsianParentStories, Redditors lament having parents who never say, “I love you” or “I’m proud of you.” At other times it’s a cheap laugh, as in the viral tweet that reads: “Sex is great but have you ever heard your parents say good job im proud of you in an asian household.”

Even in beloved recent films about Asian families, the trope persists. Michelle Yeoh played a cold mother twice over in 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians and 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once. In the latter film, she redeems herself through an extended, loving monologue to her daughter, but even that one begins with the line, “You are getting fat,” and excludes the words, “I love you.” In 2022, Turning Red, an animated film about a Chinese-Canadian family, featured a similar climax, in which the preteen protagonist’s mom finally says, “I’m sorry.” Online, fans joked that, “for Asians,” that was “the most unrealistic part.”

So it’s a relief that Beef, A24’s new Netflix series from creator Lee Sung Jin, which features a mostly Asian American cast, has little patience for this trope.

Beef revolves around the escalating feud between successful business owner Amy Lau (Ali Wong) and struggling contractor Danny Cho (Steven Yeun). What starts as a parking lot spat turns into a road rage–fueled car chase, which turns into Danny pissing on Amy’s bathroom floor, which turns into Amy vandalizing Danny’s car, and so on. Over ten 40-minute episodes, Amy and Danny’s revenge plots become increasingly erratic, ensnaring both of their families in the chaos.

Amy and Danny’s respective parents feature minimally in Beef. The show is more concerned with the families that they preside over: Amy is the breadwinner for her husband George Nakai (Joseph Lee) and their daughter June (Remy Holt), while Danny takes care of his younger brother Paul (Young Mazino) and shady cousin Isaac (David Choe). This is fairly novel in and of itself. Most recent Asian American entertainment, including the aforementioned movies and 2019’s The Farewell and the ABC series Fresh Off the Boat, has focused on how the children of immigrants misunderstand their parents. Beef features those children all grown up, caring for families of their own.

Expect “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to capture the high score at the box office… again.

Despite the release of two new movies — Universal’s wacky Dracula horror-comedy “Renfield” and Sony’s R-rated demonic thriller “The Pope’s Exorcist” — Universal and Illumination’s animated adaptation of the popular Nintendo video game looks to loom large in its second weekend of release.

After its towering $146 million debut, “Mario” is estimated to bring in $58 million to $66 million, a 55-60% decline from its opening. The PG blockbuster, which cost $100 million and brought back the all-important demographic of family audiences, has generated $204.6 million in North America and $375 million globally since opening last Wednesday. It’s already the fourth-highest grossing animated movie in pandemic times, following “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($939 million), “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” ($480 million) and “Sing 2” ($408 million).

Among newcomers, “Renfield” hopes to bring in $10 million from 3,300 theaters in North America. That’s not a great start for the film, which carries a $65 million price tag. “The Pope’s Exorcist” is also aiming to collect at least $10 million from 3,100 North American venues — a slightly better target since it cost just $18 million.

Chris McKay, the filmmaker behind “The Tomorrow War” and “The Lego Batman Movie,” directed “Renfield,” a modern take on the story of Dracula’s loyal servant. “The Menu” actor Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured henchman to the Nicolas Cage’s famed narcissistic vampire, who tries to end their co-dependent relationship after centuries of servitude.

Critics have been mostly complimentary to “Renfield,” which currently holds an 80% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety’s critic Owen Gleiberman wasn’t as high on the film (“there’s nothing much at stake”), though he praised Cage’s comedic interpretation of The Count (“it’s a witty and luscious performance, unhinged but never out of control”).

With “Renfield,” Universal continues the revamp of its monster-verse after finding success with 2020’s low-budget hit “The Invisible Man,” starring Elisabeth Moss. The studio was forced to retool its so-called Dark Universe, based on characters from its vast vault of legendary monsters, after the commercial failure of Tom Cruise’s remake of “The Mummy.”

Russell Crowe stars in “The Pope’s Exorcist,” inspired by the true story of the Vatican’s chief exorcist. In the film, directed by Julius Avery, Father Gabriele Amorth investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy that the Holy See has tried to conceal.

Reviews for “The Pope’s Exorcist” weren’t all that enthusiastic (it has a 64% on Rotten Tomatoes), with Variety’s Guy Lodge calling the possession chiller “thin” and “by-the-numbers.” It’s good, then, that critical sentiments usually don’t affect the opening weekend turnout for horror movies. (Subsequent weekends are another story). The genre has been on a hot streak in theaters, though the $18 million production budget for “The Pope’s Exorcist” makes it slightly pricer than the average low-budget thriller.

In limited release, A24 is bringing director Ari Aster’s latest anxiety-inducer “Beau Is Afraid” to four locations — Lincoln Square and Alamo in NYC and Century and Burbank in Los Angeles. Described by one outlet as a “three-hour-long panic attack,” the Joaquin Phoenix-led film follows an anxious man’s odyssey to get home following a family tragedy.

As Aster, the director of “Midsommar” and “Hereditary,” likely intended, even critics have struggled to entirely make sense of “Beau Is Afraid.” Rolling Stone’s critic David Fear says, “It’s either the most terrifying comedy or the funniest horror film of 2023.”

Expect “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to

The first trailer for The Marvels not only gave fans the cinematic debut of Kamala Khan and of the grown-up Monica Rambeau but also revealed more about the Marvel film’s villain.

Played by Zawe Ashton, the villain of The Marvels has been kept under wraps since the casting announcement back in 2021. In fact, Ashton herself was “terrified to say anything” when Ms. Marvel was airing since she was not sure her involvement in the Captain Marvel sequel had even been announced yet.

A trailer for the movie premiered at D23, and that trailer was, until now, the only official look at Ashton’s character.

The Marvels Villain Revealed

In the first trailer for November’s The Marvels, fans got a glimpse at Zawe Ashton as the movie’s antagonist.

Marvel Studios

Decked out in dark colors and surrounded by Kree, Ashton’s character is holding a staff that looks almost identical to the one held by Ronan the Accuser in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Powerful and confident, Ashton looks like she belongs in this story full of strong women characters and will make for a formidable foe.

Given the staff, the powerful air she gives off, and the seeming reverence the Kree surrounding her extend her way, it is likely that Ashton is playing the new Accuser, following Ronan’s demise in the first Guardians movie.

Unlike Ronan, Ashton’s character is not a blue version of the Kree but the human-passing kind.

Near the end of the trailer, Ashton can be seen going at it with Iman Vellani‘s Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel). It seems Ashton is shooting a Captain Marvel-esque blast from her wrist gauntlet, implying her power comes from her tech and armor.

A close-up look at the design of Ashton’s suit was also seen, with the intricate detailing on the dotted outlines up her chest and down her arms in view.

Who Is Zawe Ashton Playing in The Marvels?

Zawe Ashton only appears briefly in the first trailer for The Marvels, giving fans little to work with, though Marvel has confirmed she will be playing Dar-Benn, a genderbent character from the comics.

The staff Ashton wields — known in the comics as the Universal Weapon — has been held by various Accusers in comics history. As such, it is very possible that Dar-Benn has taken on the Accuser mantle after Ronan was defeated years back.

If that is the case, it would make sense that she has the respect and reverence of the rest of the Kree, given it has been about a decade since the mantle was vacated.

The Marvels hits theaters on November 10.

The Continental will center on the early years of John Wick’s friend, colleague, and confidante Winston Scott, played throughout the John Wick series by Ian McShane, detailing how he came to his position as proprietor of The Continental hotel in the 1970s and establishing it as a safe haven for assassins where no business may take place.

Keanu Reeves is Currently Causing a Box Office Storm with John Wick: Chapter 4

Lionsgate

Of course, The Continental would be nothing without Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, and with the latest sequel, John Wick: Chapter 4, currently causing a box office storm, the studio must be feeling very confident about expanding the franchise with spinoffs and prequels.

John Wick: Chapter 4 finds the titular assassin uncovering a path to defeating the High Table, but before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into new foes. With the price on his head ever-increasing, John Wick: Chapter 4 sees Wick takes his fight against the High Table global as he seeks out the most powerful players in the underworld, from New York to Paris to Osaka to Berlin. Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins, and Ian McShane, the fourth outing has been met with critical acclaim as well as financial success.

The Continental is just one of the spinoffs set for release, with No Time to Die star Ana de Armas set to lead Ballerina. Taking place between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina will follow the ballerina-assassin Rooney as she hunts down the people who murdered her family. Directed by Len Wiseman from a screenplay by Shay Hatten and Emerald Fennell, Ballerina is scheduled to be released on June 7, 2024.

The Continental meanwhile does not yet have a release date, but is expected to premiere on Peacock in late 2023.

Redfall won’t include a 60 FPS Performance mode on Xbox Series X/S when the game is released next month.

Instead, it will be added via a game update “at a later date”, the game’s official Twitter account confirmed on Wednesday.

At launch, the Xbox versions of the game will include a Quality mode only, with Xbox Series X supporting 4K 30 FPS and Xbox Series S offering 1440p 30 FPS.

Redfall – official gameplay deep dive

Redfall is an open-world FPS playable solo or with a team of up to four-players in co-op. It sees players battling to defeat a legion of vampires who have cut the quaint island town of Redfall, Massachusetts off from the outside world.

At launch, a persistent online connection will be required for single player and co-op, although developer Arkane Studios recently confirmed it’s “looking into” removing the requirement for solo players to always be connected online.

Following a delay from a previously planned 2022 launch, publisher Microsoft recently announced a Redfall release date of May 2, 2023 on Xbox and PC, alongside details of a special edition and pre-order bonuses.

The Redfall Bite Back Edition will include the Hero Pass, which will provide access to two future heroes, and the Throwback Outfit Pack, featuring a unique outfit and backpack for each of the four base heroes inspired by their lives before the events of the game. It will also come with a Laser Beam multi-weapon skin, and the Tactical Knife Stake weapon attachment.

Players who pre-order Redfall or play the game with Xbox Game Pass will receive the Vampire Hunter Pack. It will include the exclusive Grim Tide Shotgun, which grants 20% increased damage for eight seconds after killing an enemy, a Polar Vortex multi-weapon skin, and a Blood Ravager Stake weapon attachment.

In a Redfall preview published last month, we called it an “utterly engrossing single-player experience” which “is shaping up to be the studio’s strongest shooter to date”.
