Finding and collecting relevant indicators of compromise is critical to your security, but with millions of articles to sort through, discovering and collecting the right ones is a challenge. Even if you know where to look, IoCs can be easy to miss and tedious to upload to your threat intelligence platform.

This is why we’re excited to announce that now you can discover, collect, and export malicious IPs, domains, hashes, and URLs mentioned in your Feeds or across the web, because Feedly AI recognizes indicators of compromise.

We trained Feedly AI to understand, find, and even export IoCs, so that they are easier to find and prioritize. This feature is included with Feedly for Cybersecurity.

“Being able to track IoCs with Feedly has been very helpful, our team has been using the new feature every day to be on top of potential risks. Just today, Feedly AI was able to spot three IoCs in a long report I was reading although I hadn’t noticed them.”

Michelle Barro, Threat Intelligence Analyst at Verizon

Collect IoCs from across the entire web

Feedly AI recognizes malicious IPs, domains, hashes, and URLs within the text of articles, Tweets, or Reddit posts, and tags articles so you know how many and what type of IoCs appear in a given article.

When an article contains an IoC, Feedly AI will highlight it for you so it’s easy for you to find and confirm, even if it is buried in the text of a long article or threat intelligence report.

If the IoCs are relevant, you can  export them to a markdown or STIX file that will include critical context such as the article link, malware, threat actor, CVE, product, and TTP information.

To track indicators of compromise from across the entire web, click the robot symbol on the left hand navigation menu, and navigate to the ‘Threat Intel” tab. Type “Indicators of Compromise,” then click “+ AND” to refine your AI Feed further if needed.

Track IOCs with Feedly AI

Now that I can use Feedly to track IoCs across the web, our process to upload new indicators to our environment is much faster and easier. Being able to track IoCs across millions of sources on the web helps us cover every base possible.”

Let’s say you want to search for indicators of compromise related to a specific threat actor or malware. You can use AI Feeds to flag IoCs that match your query, even if the articles are from sources you don’t specifically follow.

The AI Feed shown in the example below will look for IoCs related to the Cobalt Strike malware family, making it easy to find what’s relevant, export it in seconds, and proactively monitor the web for future IoCs relevant to you.

Find and export IoCs and their context

When you open article(s) that contain IoCs you’d like to upload to your preferred threat intelligence platform, you can export them in either STIX or Markdown formats. This is a significant time saver in contrast to scrolling through the article and copying and pasting what you need.

Your export will also include the IoC context such as the original article link, related malware, threat actor, CVE, product, and TTP information. This makes it even easier to take action. Here is an example of a STIX export:

Automate your IoC collection process with the Feedly API

The Advanced Feedly for Cybersecurity plan includes up to 100,000 requests per month and the full power of the Feedly API. Any action a user is taking in the Feedly application can be performed via the Feedly API, including collecting IoCs. You can access instructions for doing so here.

You can use the Feedly API to aggregate indicators of compromise and their context (associated threat actors, malwares, vulnerabilities and TTPs) from recent articles in a Feed, and return a single STIX object with all of those components and their relationships.

To learn more about the power of the Feedly API or begin a trial or proof of context, click here.

It used to be particularly tedious to track the IoCs that are related to the critical UI CVEs or products my team has to be on top of. Now, with Feedly’s new IoC feature, I can track IoCs in a much faster and more visible way.”

Michael Rossi, Independent Security Consultant

Find relevant IoCs previously published online

Finally, if you need to search for a specific set of IoCs already published online, you can do this via Power Search. Power Search allows you to leverage Feedly AI’s knowledge graph within your existing Feeds or across the web, allowing you to get much more granular and accurate than standard web searches.

Click the “?” icon in the left navigation menu to access the Power Search screen. From here, you can look for any articles that contain indicators of compromise. This is ideal when you need to track a malware family you haven’t tracked before, and want to quickly find known IoCs that are already available online.

The Indicators of Compromise feature, CVE dashboard, cyber attacks Smart Topic, and several more advanced features are included with Feedly for Cybersecurity. This enterprise package is perfect for cybersecurity teams that need to conduct open-source threat intelligence more efficiently. One of the new heroes will be part of the LGBTQ community, the Shazam! Fury of the Gods writers confirm.

The release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods is just around the corner, and the sequel will include some LGBT representation with the introduction of a gay character, as writers anticipate. Released in 2019, the first installment of the adventures of the World’s Mightiest Mortal became a hit, bringing some fresh and fun air to the dark DCU from Zack Snyder’s vision.

Now, under new rules and a bunch of changes thanks to James Gunn stepping up as DC Studios’ creative director, the future of Asher Angel and Zachary Levi’s Billy Batson is uncertain, but that won’t stop them from having one, possibly, last ride. And this new adventure will come with some good changes.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

In an interview with Dorkacholics, screenwriters Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan opened up about inclusion and representation in the film, which will come from Jovan Armand and D.J. Cotrona’s character Pedro Peña:

“The only new addition for this movie is being a lot more forthright about Pedro being gay. And that was hinted at in the first movie very subtly. And I thought it was really important and really, really fought for us including that and bringing that to the fore in this movie.”

In the first movie, the group of kids are transported inside a strip club, and after they come out, Pedro claims that’s “not [his] thing.”

In this second installment, Billy Batson and his family will have to face new challenges and outstanding villains in the form of Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren, two of the great additions to this new story, along with Rachel Zegler. They will play the daughters of Atlas, Kalypso, Hespera, and Anthea, who will come to Earth to reclaim the power taken from them, endangering all of humanity.

In addition to the returns of Zachary Levi, Sher Angel, Jovan Arman, and D.J. Cotrona, the film will also see the return of Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody as Freddy; Faithe Herman and Meagan Good as Darla; Ian Chen and Ross Butler as Eugene; Grace Fulton as Maria; like Peter; Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be the first of the four films that DC Comics and Warner Discovery will bring to theaters in 2023, along with The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

A new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet bug is deleting players save data. Be careful, because if you encounter this bug, that could be it for all of your digital pocket monsters and the journey you’ve been on with them.

During the Pokemon presents on February 27, 2023, The Pokemon Company announced that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet can now connect with the mobile game Pokemon GO. This update allows players to send postcards to their Scarlet and Violet games from different parts of the world in Pokemon GO.

Update: 3/6/23 3:58 PM ET: In a Resetera Thread, Serebii listed some new information that does not tie the bug directly to syncing with Pokemon GO as initially reported.

New Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Bug is Deleting Player’s Save Data

Players have been reporting that after syncing the game with Pokemon GO, they have lost significant progress in their Scarlet and Violet games, if not the entirety of their save file.

It’s unclear what exactly is causing this bug, but according to Reddit, it’s happening to players who are syncing the game with Pokemon GO. So if you haven’t done that, it’s best not to until Game Freak issues some sort of fix or update that will stop this from happening.

Not everyone who has synced this game has this issue, but it’s enough to warn players not to sync their games together now.

Players have tried contacting Nintendo and other support options but have only been met with varying degrees of dead ends.

Kotaku reports that a support agent told one player that they were “looking into it” before the ticket was then marked closed.

While this is the most detrimental bug Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have seen yet, the game has not had the smoothest of launches. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s latest patch was set to fix many of these issues, from messy framerates to funny glitches. However, it seems it’s now created a brand new one for players to contend with.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are set to release two new DLC packs this year.

The new genre-focused Fantastic Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film has unveiled plans for a series of six yet-to-be-announced special market screenings as well as an original logo that promises to unlock the imagination.

Due to the strong response and interest from independent producers, sales agents and distributors – seen again at Berlin’s European Film Market — Fantastic Pavilion organizers are presenting the Fantastic Pavilion Galas.

Offering a prime example of what participating sales companies will be offering to worldwide buyers at the Marché du Film, the six special market screenings will serve “as a magnifying glass, giving them a wide promotion to stand out among the crop of content available at the market,” organizers said. The Galas’ six films will be announced prior the Cannes market. Interested parties may contact Fantastic Pavilion organizers via their website.

“XYZ Films is thrilled to see the Fantastic Pavilion step up to give the genre community the home it deserves in Cannes,” said Todd Brown, XYZ Films’ head of international acquisitions.

“The genre world is a rich, diverse, complex place and it is truly a family. This new Pavilion will not only amplify the best and brightest voices working in the space but also provide a home for creators and talents to mix, to meet, and to form new relationships. Every family needs a home and the Pavilion will be ours.”

Additionally, Canada’s Rue Morgue Magazine is partnering with the Fantastic Pavilion to print a special edition dedicated to the history of genre cinema at the Cannes Film Festival and detailing all Pavilion activities.

“Rue Morgue Magazine’s prestige and its longstanding tradition as the most prominent printed genre publication in the business has cemented its place among pop culture and genre fandom, making it the perfect publication medium to exemplify the grand tradition of world genre film in this historic event at the Marché Du Film,” Fantastic Pavilion organizers said.

Rue Morgue publisher Rodrigo Gudiño added: “The Fantastic Pavilion stands poised to change the face not only of the Cannes market, but of genre cinema worldwide, and Rue Morgue couldn’t be more proud to be part of this historic moment.

“The Fantastic Pavilion has the firm commitment to create opportunities to fulfill and serve the needs of the genre community. By showcasing the diversity of world wide genre film production, the Galas fulfill this purpose.”

The Fantastic Pavilion’s new graphic identity, meanwhile, was designed by Quique Ollervide’s award-winning Studio Burö Gráfico in Mexico. The logo, organizers noted, reflects The Fantastic Pavilion’s “commitment to opening the doors of genre cinema and welcoming the community into a new realm of possibilities within the Marché du Film.”

Added Fantastic Pavilion executive director Pablo Guisa Koestinger: “The Pavilion, its entire activities and even its graphic identity are based on a single basic principle: Community is key!”

The Fantastic Pavilion recently announced an international distribution award for selected Spanish-language Ibero-American films.

Hayden Panettiere successfully scared up her Scream 4 character’s return for the horror franchise’s latest chapter after taking necessary time off from acting for her health.

The Scream 6 star spoke to Good Morning America on Monday about her anticipated appearance in the New York-set sequel as Kirby Reed, the lone survivor of the Woodsboro Massacre remake in the franchise’s fourth installment. The role is part of Panettiere’s return to Hollywood after she put a pause on acting following her role in ABC’s Nashville, which ended in 2018.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do next,” Panettiere said. “I did have to take those four years off and thank God I did. I had to work on myself — my mental health, my physical health, my spiritual health.”

The Heroes actress says the possibility of returning as Kirby was initially put on her radar after the fifth film, released in 2022, was announced — but without her leading Scream 4 character. “When [Scream] popped up and came back around, I was like, ‘I want to be a part of that again because I hoped that Kirby was still alive,” the actress said.

So the actress set her sights on Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, picking up the phone and pitching her return. “I willed her back into existence and I called them,” Panettiere recalled. “I actually called them … when they were doing Scream 5 and I was like, ‘Without me?! Wait. Hold on. I might still be alive, and I could come in handy.’”

In a cover story for Women’s Health, also published Monday, Panettiere opens up about her postpartum depression after having her daughter; her substance abuse challenges while and after filming Nashville; her decision to get a breast reduction; and her relationship with her daughter, who was at one point going back and forth between the U.S. and Ukraine, where her father and Panettiere’s ex-husband, retired pro boxer Wladimir Klitschko, lives.

All of those things changed the Scream 6 star, who says she can now relate to her character’s trauma. “We saw Kirby get stabbed, but we never saw her die. We didn’t see her rescued either,” she explained to the magazine. “She has that human trauma, and it’s changed her. That’s something I can obviously relate to.”

As for the film’s new setting, as a New Yorker, Panettiere told GMA she appreciates how the film turns the concept of being safer in crowds — specifically, “so that if somebody hurts you, somebody’s there to help” — on its terrifying head.

“That can become just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, and it really could be anybody for any reason,” she said of the film’s premise.

During the interview, GMA co-anchor Michael Strahan also shared his condolences about the passing of Panettiere’s brother, Jansen, who died in February at the age of 28 from an enlarged heart.

The actress thanked Strahan before telling him that he’s “right here with me.”

After a relatively slow couple of seasons, the Vanderpump universe has delivered some of the best (worst) drama in reality show history. Over the weekend, it was revealed that Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix split after Sandoval allegedly cheated on her with another costar, Raquel Leviss.

Andy Cohen talked about the scandal on Monday morning, saying that the upcoming “Vanderpump Rules” episodes starring Ariana would be particularly shocking. You can stream the current series for free with this 7-day free trial on Fubo TV.

“First of all, when you watch the rest of the season of ‘Vanderpump Rules’ with the overlay of knowing that Raquel and Sandoval — what’s happened with them, and what was possibly happening then — it’s really shocking,” Cohen said on his SiriusXM radio show. “Even Wednesday night’s episode, you’re not going to believe it. Watching it with this overlay…there’s a moment between Ariana and Raquel where you see where their friendship is, which is good, that you won’t believe.”

Cohen also confirmed rumors that Bravo cameras were rolling over the weekend to catch the fallout to the breakup and how it impacted the cast.

From digging deep as a scream queen to relaxing into her bulges in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the veteran actress speaks her truth.

Growing up as the child of movie stars Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, Jamie Lee Curtis learned early on the difference between real life and a photo op. When she launched her career as the 19-year-old breakout of John Carpenter’s 1978 “Halloween,” who made audiences care whether she got mauled by Michael Myers — and decades later, the new Jason Blum “Halloween” that put her back in the spotlight as a scream queen — Curtis didn’t get hung up on being taken seriously.

“I remember the first day on ‘Halloween 2018’ that I was working with the young actress Andi Matichak,” Curtis said on a Zoom call. “It was a very intense scene for her and she came in fully loaded. It was over the grief of her father, and it was deeply emotional work. People in horror movies deliver that level of intensity and emotion on the daily and they are overlooked  — because the genre demands it. Toni Collette! And from the beginning I’ve stayed with the joy of the job. I love my job. No one loves being an actor on a movie set more than Jamie Lee Curtis. No one, there’s not a person alive who loves it more.”

Not that there weren’t plenty of film and television kudos along the way, including a BAFTA nomination for “A Fish Called Wanda,” a win for “Trading Places,” and four Golden Globe film nominations. But here’s the thing: Curtis can do anything. Horror, romance, comedy, drama, action. And when it came to IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre in Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the role demanded all of it.

It also brought 64-year-old Curtis her first Oscar nomination, for Best Supporting Actress. She’s already won Best Supporting Female Performance at the SAG Awards, along with being part of the winning ensemble.

Here are some tricks of the trade that helped Curtis get where she is today.

Act with your whole body. When Curtis starred on the ABC romantic comedy series “Anything But Love” with Richard Lewis, executive producer John Ritter watched her audition with actors. “It was a scene where an old beau was coming on to me in my office, where I’m the authority, and he’s trying to get the job,” she said. “And he comes on really hard. And he backs me up against the desk. And, this was a beau that I liked. So it’s that conflict of like, ‘I want to, but I don’t want to, I want to, but I don’t want to.’ We did the scene many times with a bunch of actors.

“Before the next actor came in, John Ritter walked up to me and he whispered in my ear: ‘You have really funny legs.’ Now, this is coming from John Ritter, who was a master of physical comedy. And I believe that all of Helen in ‘True Lies’ is directly attributable to John Ritter. Because I was as free physically as I’ve ever been during ‘True Lies.’ In all of it, Helen was just such a fabulous person. And I credit the late great John Ritter for giving me just that little permission to go for it.”

Stay honest. While making the 1985 “Perfect,” in which Curtis starred as a perfectly bodied aerobic instructor opposite John Travolta, one day the Director of Photography refused to shoot her. “There was a scene in a courtroom,” Curtis said. “And to director [James Bridges], he said, ‘You’re not going to shoot her today. Her eyes are puffy.’ I was 26.”

She continued, “By 35, I had some eye surgery, because if you look at a picture of me as a kid, I look tired. I look exhausted, because I just had naturally dark circles under my eyes. Anyway, that happened. As soon as my gray hair started coming in, I started dyeing it. I hate beauty parlor chairs. I don’t like the smell of this stuff. I don’t like sitting there. I don’t like baking under the thing. And from a very early point, I thought: ‘This is ridiculous that I’m going to spend all this time hiding something.’”

Then came the infamous 2002 More Magazine cover, shot when Curtis was 43. “I was selling a book about self esteem for children,” she said. “It was called, ‘I’m Gonna Like Me.’ I said to them, ‘Look, my self esteem was put into question and I did plastic surgery, and I hated it. And I have now accepted that this is what I look like. And I will do this magazine cover for you. And by the way, on the cover, I’m smiling and airbrushed, but then I will take a picture in my underwear. You can do no retouching. The lighting isn’t gonna be pretty. And I will take that picture. But then you have to put it opposite a picture of me fully dressed up, fully made up. And you have to say how long it took and how much money so that people can relate.”

“I knew it would have an impact,” she added. “I knew it. Because I’m also known for my figure. And here I’m saying, ‘Look, I’m a little chubby. And I’m middle-aged. And I don’t spend eight hours at the gym. I don’t spend one hour at the gym, I’m lucky if I walk for 20 minutes, I maybe do a few sit-ups and a few push ups. I wanted to say to people who had spent a lot of time looking at pictures of me from ‘Perfect,’ comparing themselves to me, that I did not want that to happen. And so this was a way to say, ‘Look, this is what I look like. This is who I am, please understand, I’m just like you.’ That was an important moment.”

Staying sober was another important authenticator. “Being sober is the great equalizer,” she said. “You know that you are looking into the deep, dark, truthful mirror, [which] is both a beautiful construct of the emotional life, the spiritual life, the truth of my life. And looking into the mirror, you have to accept the things you cannot change.”

That includes genetics. “Now I got lucky,” she said. “I have beautiful genetics. My mother: gorgeous woman, my father was very handsome. And I have nice skin, but I knew that I would never become a ‘cosmeceutical’ person. I am not going to advertise that ‘if you do this, you will look different and feel different.’ That’s just not going to be my path. Selling yogurt that makes you poop is actually a public service. That’s different than ‘if you use this anti-aging cream, you’re gonna look younger.’ All of that became a rallying cry that then I’ve established as my gig. And so now it’s just the way it is.”

Stay out of your trailer while on set. From the start, Curtis knew who Deirdre was — even if she didn’t fully understand the script. “I’ve met Deirdre,” she said. “I know a couple of Deirdres. Three years ago, I was a 60-year-old woman who has had heartbreak, disappointment, been overlooked. I have felt abandoned. I have felt rejection. And I have been forgotten. I know what that feels like emotionally.”

No prosthetics were required for Deirdre’s ample bulges. On Zoom, Curtis hauled up her shirt to show me her stomach. “I’m not sucking my stomach in,” she said. “But I’m not not sucking my stomach in. This is what it looks like. And I worked out this morning. I’m 64. But my point is this, I am not fat shaming. I’m saying that for most people who sit at a desk all day long that’s what it looks like. No, I didn’t stick it out. I just relaxed. I relaxed my stomach. And if I relax it today, I’m not pushing, I’m just relaxing. I’m not doing what we all do 90% of the time, which is is clench ourselves.”

The majority of Curtis’ work in the movie was shot in the first two days but she never left the set. “I watch everything,” she said. “Being on set is very, very involved. I ask a lot of questions. I watch how people use the camera: angles, lenses. I felt the depth of it all. The first time I started speaking as Deirdre, I knew she sounded like a combination of Fauci and Bernie Sanders. I knew she wasn’t from LA. It wasn’t heavy handed. There was just a relaxing of my jaw a little bit and nobody said anything. So I just kept doing it.”

Her directors are happy people, she said. “They love also to do what they do. They are joyful people, they love that they’ve created this petri dish of creativity with all of these elements interacting and and colliding. It turns out that Daniel Kwan was the more visual and technical of the two. And Daniel Scheinert was more the communicator. Scheinert was the actor’s director. It didn’t need a lot, it’s shading things.”

She added, “The moment with Michelle [Yeoh] in the hot dog universe on the page reads in a way as being absurd. As Michelle and I created this world together quickly, the improvisation that came out of it was the breakup, the heartbreak of breaking up with someone, regardless of the fact that you have hotdog hands so you have to pull your suitcases with your feet. And this scene became about a loofah that Deirdre had bought at Bed, Bath and Beyond. But Evelyn used it more. And so Deirdre was telling Evelyn, that even though she bought it, ‘I’m leaving it for you.’ And that opened both of us up all of a sudden to the heartache of having to separate your property. All of that awful aspect of the breakup became this rich and fertile emotional soil. And Michelle went there. I went there. It became incredibly poignant.”

Stay curious. Check out the Variety Actors on Actors series and you’ll see Curtis do a penetrating interview with Colin Farrell. She was curious and probing, without trying to promote herself. “When I was young, I was not curious,” she said. “And I remember a man. I was in 19, 20, maybe 21. And I remember him saying something to me like, ‘You are the most incurious person I’ve ever met.’ Drugs may have been involved, who knows, but I remember thinking about what he said. And I don’t know if that became this impetus of curiosity. But the truth is, I am curious. I’m curious about everybody I meet. I want to peel it away and connect the dots.”

Take opportunities. When Curtis returned as Laurie Strode in “Halloween 2018,” she made a side deal with Jason Blum to launch her production company Comet Pictures. She has a long list of projects to produce, most prominently at Amazon with Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta series co-starring Curtis and Nicole Kidman as the title detective, which is heading into production.

“All of a sudden, at 60, I now was headlining movies,” she said. “And those movies were successful. Part of my negotiation with Blumhouse for the ‘Halloween’ movies was to let me have a company. So they are going to produce ‘Scarpetta’ with me, they are producing [Amazon series] ‘The Sticky’ [starring Margo Martindale] with me, [eco-horror film] ‘Mother Nature’ will be produced under their banner. So yes, Jason Blum has been not only a great business partner, but has really been a creative partner for me. And with the success of those ‘Halloween’ movies, he has given me an opportunity that I would not have been able to find anywhere else. Because [before that] I didn’t have agency. I didn’t have a purchase to stand on.”

Having published 12 children’s books, Curtis also wrote a movie to direct, but it was shelved when COVID hit. “I don’t think that it will ever get resurrected,” she said. “I don’t need to [direct], to be complete as an artist. I would like to because I’m that girl and I’m visual and I like storytelling. I’m very much interested in expressing myself creatively.”

To quote Sheryl Crow, “all I want to do is have a little fun before I die,” said Curtis. “All I want to do is have some creativity before I die. And if not now, when? If not me, who? I’ve lost a lot of people, a lot of people have died that I’ve known. That’s part of life, obviously. What I’ve learned about death, is that the real tragedy of death is the creativity and the ideas that human could have brought to the universe. I mean, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock. It’s happening, game is on.”

Stories of war and its devastating human toll, migration across borders, the struggle for human rights and the battle to save a rapidly warming planet are among the themes that take center stage on March 6 during the Thessaloniki Pitching Forum, the co-production and co-financing platform of the Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival.

Fourteen projects representing filmmakers from 21 countries will be pitching before an audience of international industry guests including producers, broadcasters, funding bodies and festival programmers, as well as a jury comprised of Eleni Chandrinou, a consultant and producer from Cigale Films; Nevena Milašinović, a sales and acquisitions executive from Lightdox; and Sara Rüster, international distribution manager at the Swedish Film Institute.

Eleven more films that are nearing completion and looking for festival premieres and distribution will also be screened as part of the Agora Docs in Progress program.

Angeliki Vergou, who heads the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival’s Agora industry section, said the selection offers a range of timely topics that will resonate with audiences worldwide, but largely told from the distinctive perspective of filmmakers from Southeast Europe and the wider Mediterranean region. “It’s the point of view from our region that we are trying to support,” she said.

The forum unfolds at a time when more and more documentary filmmakers are claiming awards at the world’s most prestigious fests. Hardly a fortnight ago, French docmaker Nicolas Philibert won the Golden Bear in Berlin for his documentary about a Paris mental health care facility, “On the Adamant.” Last year, Laura Poitras triumphed on the Lido with “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” her docu-portrait of the photographer and activist Nan Goldin, which won the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion award.

Despite such laurels — and the steady demand for non-fiction content from local and global streaming services — financing documentary films is still a challenge. “Budgets for documentaries are getting higher, and broadcasters don’t have the means to finance them as much as before the pandemic,” said Vergou.

This year, the Agora is involving more producers than ever before in its doc pitching forum, hoping they’ll be able to access financing from their national film centers and domestic broadcasters and come on board as co-producers. “We are approaching it a little bit like we do with fiction films, bringing producers to the fore,” Vergou said. “We think that they are the backbone of documentary filmmaking.”

Among the works in progress looking for distribution, Lebanese filmmaker and actress Myriam el Hajj follows her Visions du Réel premiere “A Time to Rest” with “Suspended,” which looks at three generations in Beirut who share a desire to change their ailing country but can’t agree on the means to do it. “Tell Them About Us” is a coming-of-age story from first-time director Rand Beiruty, which follows teenage girls who are the daughters of recent immigrants, trying to adjust to their new life in a provincial German city. Veteran Greek docmaker Christos Karakepelis’ third feature, “Death Plan for a Dog and a Man,” is a portrait of a canine and his owner grappling with lockdown in their cave-like Athens apartment, staring down decay and death. The director’s previous films have played at Berlin, Karlovy Vary, Visions du Réel and other festivals.

The 14 features in development include “Dad’s Lullaby” (pictured), director Lesia Diak’s feature debut, which follows a Ukrainian veteran who returns home burnt out and traumatized from war but hoping to find peace for himself and his family. Cairo-based filmmaker Alaa Dajani’s “The Native Dance” tells the story of the more than 300,000 peasants who were conscripted into the Egyptian Labor Corps before WWI, many dispatched to Europe to dig trenches for the Allied defense.

“Holy Human Angel,” veteran docmaker Angeliki Aristomenopoulou’s fifth feature, follows a 20-year-old queer woman from a conservative Greek island community who relies on her family and her art to help her overcome stereotypes and define her queer identity. In Muhammad Reza Azadi’s “Jana,” which is set against the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, a young couple learn they’re expecting their first child, complicating their desire to escape to the West.

“Far From Maine,” director Roy Cohen’s sophomore effort, follows an Israeli man who’s compelled to deal with the violent and long-forgotten death of his Palestinian friend, who was killed by police when they were 17. “The Man with a Broken Arm,” Greek director Athanasios Vasileiou’s feature debut, is the account of a man whose memories of his father’s involvement with the Greek military junta are stirred up when he returns to his childhood home.

Stories of war and its devastating human

TOURISTS were horrified when the “panda cub” they cuddled for photographs turned out to be an expertly dyed dog.

Amazed locals in the village of Monastir, near the city of Sochi in south-western Russia, called police when they spotted a street trader offering people the black and white bear.

But officers who were rushed to the scene to rescue the endangered animal found that its owner had pulled off a cunning trick.

The animal was actually a fluffy Chow Chow dog the scammer had dyed with a panda’s markings.

Cops uncovered more lies after apprehending the man, who allegedly had a “lion cub” and a kite bird that he rented out for pictures.

Russian prosecutors previously confirmed they were continuing to investigate the claims and would press charges against the man if he was found to have illegally obtained wild animals.

Eyewitnesses claimed the “tiny panda cub” was being “tortured”, forced to be out in extreme 40C heat.

The poor little dog was described as no more than 30cm (11 inches) in size.

Anton Lopatin, who worked for the local prosecutor’s office at the time, said his team launched an investigation as soon as they heard reports that a panda cub was being used for commercial purposes.

But this street trader was not alone, in Chengdu, south-western China, a ‘panda’ cafe raised eyebrows when it opened to the public.

Chengdu is known as the home of giant pandas and this cafe offered tourists the opportunity to spend time with six ‘panda cubs.’

However, upon closer inspection it became obvious the animals were fluffy dyed Chow Chow dogs.

The owner of the cafe, Mr Huang, previously said that his business even offered locals a dyeing service for their pooches.

He told Hongxing News that he imported his dye from Japan and employed trained specialists to custom colour the animals.

Mr Huang said: “Every time we dye it costs 1,500 yuan [$211; £163].

“The dye is really expensive.”

The cafe owner insisted the products cause no harm in the creation of the ‘pandas’.

However, one vet, Li Daibing, urged people not to dye their pets, saying: “This could damage their fur and skin.”

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a bear native to south-central China. In 2016, the IUCN reclassified the species from “endangered” to “vulnerable”.

Chow chow dogs also originate from China but from the northern regions where they are referred to as ‘Songshi Quan’.

When translated into English this means: ‘Puffy-lion dog’.

They are one of the few ancient dog breeds left in the world today and are thought to be the inspiration behind the Foo dog – statues often found guarding Buddhist temples.

This comes as people across the globe are shocked to find out their pets are not what they seem.

In Yunnan, a Chinese village, a woman brought home what she believed to be a Tibetan mastiff – but was shocked to discover the pet was a bear.

The family were concerned as their ‘puppy’ grew to over 250 pounds, and began walking on its hind legs.

The adorable creature also had a big appetite, going through a “box of fruits and two buckets of noodles” each day, The Independent reported.

“The more he grew, the more like a bear he looked,” Yun told Chinese Media. “I am a little scared of bears.”

Yun called officials to inspect her dog, and was told she had actually been raising an endangered Asiatic black bear.

Another family made the mistake of buying what they thought was a purebred Husky for their son.

But they were left stunned when the creature turned out to be an Andean fox.

In 2021, Maribel Sotelo, from Peru, revealed she purchased the animal for $13 (£9.50).

The mum told Reuters its behaviour seemed normal at first, but the beast suddenly turned violent as it attacked family members and other animals in the neighbourhood.

She said: “A lady told us that it had eaten three large guinea pigs.”

The animal eventually ran away from the family’s home and was caught by wildlife officials several days later.

Shockingly this happened again, to another unsuspecting pet owner who believed she had rescued a stray dog.

The woman, who appropriately goes by @Raised.by.Wolvex, shared content of the animal social media and calls it a “wolfdog”.

She regularly posts clips of the mutt, called Awilix, along with her two fluffy huskies, Suka and Xena.

In other videos she claims that Awilix is 80 per cent grey wolf, 10 per cent German Shepherd and 10 per cent Malamute.

She frequently warns other prospective dog owners: “Wolfdogs are not meant for the average person. While amazing animals they require special attention, care and training.”

TOURISTS were horrified when the “panda cub”

UPDATED, 1:06 p.m. ET: Twitter was again experiencing widespread technical issues, returning an odd error message to users who tried to click on links in tweets to third-party websites for nearly an hour Monday.

“Your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint, please see https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-api for more information,” the error message read for users who attempted to click on web links. The error message also referenced “code 467.” During the outage, visiting the URL in the error message showed the same error message.

The Twitter Support team in a tweet Monday at 12:19 p.m. ET said, “Some parts of Twitter may not be working as expected right now. We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences. We’re working on this now and will share an update when it’s fixed.” The problem appeared to be resolved around 12:50 p.m. ET, and Twitter Support at 1:05 p.m. ET posted, “Things should now be working as normal.”

After Twitter fixed the glitch, company owner Elon Musk tweeted that, “A small API change had massive ramifications. The code stack is extremely brittle for no good reason. Will ultimately need a complete rewrite.”

Last month, Twitter announced that as of Feb. 9 it would begin charging developers a monthly fee to let their apps access its API (application programming interface). Musk had claimed that the “free API is being abused right now by bot scammers & opinion manipulators.” Twitter said it would charge developers a monthly API access fee starting at $100/month for basic access. That came after the company — without warning — in January had made a change that disabled Twitter access for multiple third-party apps like Tweetbot and Twitterrific.

The latest technical problems with Twitter have cropped up a little over four months after Musk, the multibillionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, closed a debt-heavy $44 billion deal to acquire the company.

Under his ownership, Musk has dramatically slashed Twitter’s workforce to reduce costs. The company had about 7,500 employees when Musk took over, and it is now estimated to have fewer than 2,000. Late last month, Twitter laid off “at least” 200 more staffers, which represented 10% of the company’s approximately 2,000 remaining employees, the New York Times reported.

Twitter’s API status page did not report any issues or problems as of Monday, with a notice that said “all systems operational.”

Paramount Global is exploring a sale of its majority stake in BET Media Group as part of an effort to generate cash to strengthen its flagship Paramount+ streaming service.

A source familiar with the matter emphasized to TheWrap that there is no guarantee the move will end in a transaction.

While the move is still in the early stages, the source said they expect substantial interest among Black high net-worth individuals and minority-owned institutions as potential buyers given BET’s status as a brand and business within the Black community. If a deal does end up happening, the source said that Paramount would expect to maintain a minority stake as well as a commercial relationship in the business.

According to media reports, Tyler Perry is in talks to buy the controlling stake in BET.

BET was launched in 1980 by founder Robert Johnson as a channel specifically catered to African American audiences. Paramount acquired BET in 2000 for $2.3 billion. In addition to BET linear channels and VH1, BET Media Group oversees BET+, a joint venture with Perry, and BET Studios, a joint venture with Kenya Barris and Rashida Jones.

A spokesperson for Paramount declined to comment.

As of its latest quarter, Paramount+ had nearly 56 million subscribers, while about 21 million subscribers make up the rest of its DTC subscriber base, including Showtime and BET+. Paramount does not break out its figures for Showtime and BET+.

Chief financial officer Naveen Chopra told analysts during the company’s latest earnings call that Paramount+’s integration of Showtime will officially launch in the third quarter. As part of the move, the company is raising its prices for Paramount+ subscriptions. The top tier of Paramount+ will rise to $11.99 per month from $9.99 per month. The cheaper, ad-supported Essentials tier, which will not include Showtime, will increase to $5.99 from $4.99 per month. Consumers who already pay for the Paramount+/Showtime bundle will not be affected by this price increase.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the BET Media Group discussions.

Not even the biggest celebrities can escape an occasional breakout. Zits come for everyone, including Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. The actor and Florence by Mills founder just shared her go-to routine for dealing with a pesky pimple in a super relatable new video.

In the vid, we see Millie in her bathroom in a silky peach robe with her hair pulled back in a ponytail and zero makeup. She points out a small breakout near her nose and another on her forehead, saying the areas are not very “happy,” and she thinks they’re hormonal. “I’m having a pretty rough night with my skin,” she shares. Thankfully she has her own skin care and beauty line to help her out.

Millie reaches for two trusted products that help shrink those zits and calm down angry skin. First, she applies a few dots of Florence by Mills’s Clear the Way Clarifying Mud Mask, which is formulated with charcoal powder and salicylic acid to unclog pores and Kaolin clay to help exfoliate. “I just use it basically for spot treatments,” she says. “I apply it to areas that I feel need cleaning; I just put a little bit on my chin.” (Millie’s mud mask is currently out of stock, but Origins’ Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask is a similar pick.)

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

For the small cluster near her nose, Millie opts for the Spot a Spot Acne Patches, made with peppermint oil, salicylic acid, and tea tree oil to shrink spots and protect them from bacteria and picking. “With this one that looks really angry with me, I’m going to put one of our stickers on that to give it the love it needs.”

Millie applies two zit stickers to “double up” the area since it’s a small cluster. In true Florence fashion, the stickers are shaped like the brand’s signature whale motif and come in a sweet pale purple color. And voilà! Those zits don’t stand a chance.

Four More Shots Please Season 2

Cast: Sayani Gupta, Kirti Kulhari, Maanvi Gagroo and Bani J

Direction: Nupur Asthana

There is an element of simplistic joy that drives Four More Shots Please, and it’s a quality that endears you to the show. Beneath the grit driving its admirably unapologetic protagonists, it has a fairytale spirit propping the narrative. Same-sex love or business woes, broken marriages or cheating partners — within the realism that this series sets up, the drama invariably flows with abundant feel-good zest.

Perhaps it is meant to be that way. The four heroines of the show have, after all, learnt to comfortably coexist with their flaws and life’s worries. The new season takes the individual stories of these four women forward with more introspective edge and the same irreverent wit that we loved the first time around.

Season two takes off a few months after the first season ended, and starts with a rather unnecessary check on where each lead character currently stands, before taking off with their individual stories.

Damini (Sayani Gupta), Anjana (Kirti Kulhari), Siddhi (Maanvi Gagroo) and Umang (Bani J) are still dealing with familiar crises. Damini, reeling under the loss of her website, has turned her attention to writing a book that has the potential of stirring up a storm. Umang, after outing herself to the world, wants to give her relationship with Samara (Lisa Ray) a proper shot. Anjana wants to patch up with her ex-husband, while Siddhi is trying to make it as a stand-up comedian.

While Nupur Asthnana takes over from Anu Menon to direct season two, the overall uniformity in the unique mix of drama and humour probably owes itself to the fact that Devika Bhagat returns as writer for all 10 episodes of the new season. Bhagat keeps up the intrigue factor about each of the leading ladies by reiterating their quirky flaws from season one.

This is a show brought to life by an all-women crew. Beyond Asthana and Bhagat, the narrative is sufficiently enriched by Ishita Moitra’s dialogues. The writing of characters as well as the lines they get to speak, blend well with Asthana’s tack as a filmmaker.

It is something that lets the cast relish the job at hand. Sayani Gupta, Kirti Kulhari, Maanvi Gagroo and Bani J are actually more impressive in their respective roles this season. They seem to have settled down comfortably in their screen avatars.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDDqtrb5fnA/default.jpg

The male cast, really the supporting acts here, are however impressive in well-penned roles. Milind Soman, Pratiek Babbar and Neil Bhoopalam are back in familiar roles, while Sameer Kochhar and Prabal Punjabi join the cast, too. The men are particularly useful in triggering off the conflict points in the lives of the show’s four female leads, with their many hues between black and white.

Sure, season two has its flaws. The start of the season, for instance, need not have wasted time with recap, and straightaway taken us into the current lives of the four heroines. After a while, many of the stock plot points keep coming back, rendering some of the middle episodes without pace at times.

Still, you come out of the experience happier — if only because Damini, Anjana, Siddhi and Umang have adamantly decided they won’t let negativity enter their world, no matter what. Despite the feel-good simplicity, their world continues to be nuanced.

Four More Shots Please Season 2 Cast: Sayani

A GloRilla concert Sunday night in Rochester, NY, ended in tragedy when one person was killed and nine others were injured in a crush of people exiting the show.

The fatality was reported to be a 33-year-old woman who was pronounced dead after arrival at Strong Memorial Hospital. Additionally, nine more concertgoers were injured in the melee, including two women in critical condition as of Monday morning. The other seven were reported hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The injuries appear to be as a result of a large crowd pushing towards the exits following accounts of individuals hearing what they believed to be gunshots,” said Rochester police lieutenant Nicholas Adams.

The Associated Press and local daily the Democrat & Chronicle reported that when officers got to the concert venue, the Main Street Armory, they found injured people, but none with gunshot or stabbing wounds, contrary to some of the first emergency calls that came in from the scene.

GloRilla tweeted about her concerns shortly after midnight ET, about an hour after the deadly stampede.

“I’m just now hearing about what happened wtf,” she wrote. “Praying everybody is ok,” she added, alongside a series of tears emoji.

Said Rochester mayor Malik Evans said at a news conference, “This is a tragedy of epic proportions. It’s something that all of us who love concerts worry about… When you go to a concert you do not expect to be trampled. Your loved ones expect you to be able to come home and talk about the experience you had at that great concert.”

The mayor added that it was too early to say what precipitated the stampede. “We are going to hold people accountable for what happened last night, period,” Evans said. “I intend to get to the bottom of this.”

Rochester police chief David Smith is asking any patrons with video of the events to come forward to aid in the city’s investigation.

A Facebook post by a woman purporting to have been at the event described a chaotic scene in which she was fearful for her life. “I literally almost died,” she wrote, “I felt all the air leaving my lungs. My whole body hurt. To be screaming for help and have people step on you and climb over you was so fucking scary. I just kept thinking about my kids and how I didn’t want them to grow up without me… Thank you to the man that helped me. He noticed I couldn’t breathe and could barely get a word out and he got my body free and pushed me out.”

Another woman who said she was at the concert tweeted: “I was in the middle of that crowd, but i didn’t hear any gunshots… honestly we were all just walking out after GloRilla performed and then everyone started running outta nowhere it made no sense.”

Fire marshals are said to be looking at whether the concert met regulations, although the marshals conducted an annual inspection in December and found the venue “current and compliant with all fire codes.” The Main Street Armory is a seven-story 1905 building that has an official capacity of 5,000.

The death and injuries occurred as investigations and reverberations still linger over the deaths of 10 concertgoers at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival in November 2021.

The upcoming film Shazam! Fury of the Gods is confirmed to ignore the teases in the first movie’s post-credits tag.

At the end of the first Shazam!, the project’s post-credits scene picks up with Mark Strong’s Doctor Sivana in jail, scribbling symbols on the wall like a madman. He then starts to hear a voice—one that belongs to a talking caterpillar.

The insect in question happens to be the one and only Mister Mind. The character is a worm from space sporting powerful psionic abilities such as telepathy and mind control powers. He also happens to be an infamous villain from Shazam’s rogue gallery.

Fury of the Gods to Ignore Mister Mind

DC Studios

In an interview with Cinemablend, Shazam! Fury of the Gods writer Henry Gayden revealed that the sequel will not be acknowledging the first film’s post-credits scenes.

Gayden admitted that, at one point and time, the sequel did have Sivana and Mister Mind as potential villains:

“There was a long period of developing it and going down various alleys, like who the villain is, Sivana, Mister Mind, all these things that we did. But the one core thing that was there from the jump after the first movie was (that) the next story for Billy is, now that he has a family, how does he behave? And it is, now that he has it, he’s terrified to lose it.”

Despite their exploration of those characters, the writer revealed that “it didn’t feel like it was telling an emotional next installment:

“It was a few months. And it was really fun. But what ended up happening is it felt redundant with the first movie. Because despite Mister Mind being a fascinating new edition, it still was a lot of Sivana and Billy, and it didn’t feel like it was telling an emotional next installment. It just felt like it was telling the natural next installment, action-wise.”

Mark Strong, Shiva, Shazam
DC Studios

Gayden noted how “one of [his] favorite things [he’s] ever written” was part of the old Sivana drafts but that at the end of the day, the story with the Daughters of Atlas was the right direction to go in:

“So emotionally, when we got to the sisters and the Daughters of Atlas, it was about like, ‘How do we get these powers? Do we deserve them?’ Questioning that, and really telling that story was much more compelling than continuing the Sivana story right now. That’s not to say they were in the future. And I had to take… one of my favorite things I’ve ever written, I wrote for the Sivana drafts. But I think, ultimately, this emotionally was the best story to tell.”

Shazam’s Uncertain Future

It’s already been confirmed that Fury of the Gods had two post-credits scenes at one point.

However, given the upcoming DCU reboot, many fans wonder if either of them will make the final cut. More importantly, if they do, could audiences just be getting big sequel teases that won’t end up going anywhere—like Black Adam‘s Henry Cavill tag?

Shazam’s existence in James Gunn’s upcoming slate remains a big question mark. No one seems to know what’ll happen to the hero or his supporting cast.

Odds are that DC Studios is waiting to make any final decisions until the movie’s box office performance can be seen.

If Billy Batson does get to return for more adventures, instead of Mister Mind, Gunn should absolutely set up a showdown between Shazam and his archnemesis Black Adam—something that wasn’t going to happen with Dwayne Johnson due to the actor’s odd disdain for Levi’s hero.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods hit theaters on Friday, March 17.

New on-set photos revealed Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot while shooting The Penguin for HBO Max.

While prior social media posts already confirmed that filming was underway, this is the first time Farrell has been spotted on-set as Penguin.

In 2022’s The Batman, Farrell was unrecognizable in the role courtesy of prosthetics; now, these new photos revealed his character’s design for the anticipated spin-off.

The Return of Colin Farrell’s Batman Villain

Colin Farrell was spotted in full makeup and costume on the New York set of The Penguin for HBO Max.

This upcoming series is a spin-off of Matt Reeves‘ The Batman with Farrell reprising his role as the nefarious Penguin.

Just like in the Robert Pattinson-led film, Farrell’s appearance is completely transformed due to truly fantastic makeup and prosthetic work.

However, his character does appear to be heavier in The Penguin than he was in the 2022 film.

The following is an image of Farrell in The Batman for comparison:

Warner Bros.

It’s also worth noting that he’s sporting a new purple jacket, a likely nod to earlier versions of his character’s persona.

When Will The Penguin Land on HBO Max?

While The Batman 2 is set to expected to premiere in October 2025, this DC Elseworlds story has yet to receive a release date.

However, now that cameras are rolling, it looks like The Penguin will arrive on HBO Max in 2024 and further expand Matt Reeves’ Batman universe ahead of his Robert Pattinson sequel.

At the moment, it’s unclear why Farrell’s Cobblepot appears slightly different than he did in the 2022 film and whether his appearance will remain that way in the series.

As for what DCU fans can expect in terms of The Penguin‘s plot, it sounds like the show will be required viewing due to its connective nature.

According to Farrell, the series takes place a week after The Batman ends and lays the groundwork for The Batman 2.

The Batman 2 arrives in theaters on October 3, 2025.

In fact, if $0.19 is on the floor, most people aren’t even bothering to pick it up. So, the fact you can buy a game, and a decent one at that, for $0.19 is fairly notable. That said, you can only do this for a limited time or, more specifically, the 90-percent-off deal is only available until March 2.

The game in question comes the way of developer Digital Melody and publisher Forever Entertainment, and it’s called Timberman VS. As the name suggests, it’s a spin-off of Timberman, a game that’s been played by millions across the world. While the spin-off isn’t as popular as its predecessor, it does have very positive user reviews. PSN doesn’t have user reviews, but Steam does, and the game is available on Steam as well, though not for $0.19.

Over on Steam, the game boasts a “Very Positive” User Review rating, with 92 percent of nearly 3,000 user reviews rating the game positively. This is only a few points shy of the hard-to-come-by “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating, which is given to games where 95 percent of user reviews are positive.

“The game loved by millions of players all around the world – Timberman, now has a brand new, polished axe! Timberman VS – available on PC and consoles, featuring a cross-platform play! Gather your friends and prove that you are a world-class wood chopper,” reads an official blurb about the game. “Enter the digital forest and discover a new version of this classic, casual game – slice and dice trees in an arcade-style, challenge your friends, and be the fastest timberman alive! Timberman now features a single-player challenge, to test your skills and unlock as many as 56 characters, and local games to have fun with your friends!”

Production designer John Paino and HBO’s The Last of Us expand on the game’s iconic villain.

Editor’s note: spoilers for The Last of Us episode 8 to follow.

If you’ve played the original PlayStation game The Last of Us, then you know about David.

David is the charismatic leader of a faction that appears in the winter chapter while the player is in Ellie’s point of view—and he’s scary. He takes a liking to Ellie, capturing her and trying to convince her to join his group. And it’s revealed he has resorted to cannibalism to keep his flock alive.

In the game, not much is known about David, other than he’s creepy and a cannibal, but you can assume some things based on the environment. For example, players can catch a glimpse of a banner in the lodge during his boss fight (if you’re paying enough attention during this terrifying game play). It reads: “When we are in need he shall provide!”

‘The Last of Us’Credit: Naughty Dog

This banner sparked fan theories for years about David as an overtly religious figure and the perhaps Christian undertones to this faction.

In the show, David is played by Scott Shepherd, and he’s more clearly painted as a preacher (formerly a teacher of children, which is doubly horrible considering his proclivities). His group is also more obviously a cult in his manipulative grasp. Just as in previous episodes, writers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are interested in exploring all the shades of the show’s villains, and the character development is stellar.

The lessons here are that you don’t have to make your villains one-dimensional, even if you don’t have time to develop them as fully as you want to. Put something in their environment or behavior that at least hints at more, and let the audience fill in the rest. They can be a quiet, conniving man surrounded by religious imagery and suspicious meat, and be just as terrifying as a loud, bloodthirsty killer.

All that being said, how is David’s character reflected in the production design? We chatted with John Paino, the show’s production designer, about the episode.

NFS: David is such a horrifying character, and I’m wondering if you did anything in your set designs to develop him further.

Paino: You’re talking about the cannibal town. We built the steakhouse, which is the meeting place. There was a nod by me to make it somewhat church-like in its symmetry, and where we put his podium. And [in] the banner there is a subtle—we try to make it feel a little bit like a church, a little bit.

So, there’s things like that. But again, too, you walk a fine line between what’s in the game, what a steakhouse looks like, and being subtle with bringing that in, I think, and so that’s it.

‘The Last of Us’Credit: Liane Hentscher/HBO

NFS: Yeah.

Paino: We do try to bring that in. I also think the way it’s shot and the framing of it certainly helps too.

NFS: It’s always been one thing that I’m curious about from the game.

Paino: I mean, we built the steakhouse and the vat in the kitchen and all of that so that we could control it and make it a bit more ominous and Shining-like—and just, yeah, weird.

Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, the last surviving founding member of the seminal Southern rock band, has died, the band announced on Sunday evening. Rossington was 71 years old.

“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,” a statement shared via the band’s official Facebook page reads. “Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.”

Although the band offered no official cause of death, Rossington had struggled with his heart in recent years, undergoing emergency heart surgery in 2021 in the midst of the group’s Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ Tour.

Heart surgery wasn’t Rossington’s first brush with mortality. In 1977, just three days after the release of “Street Survivors,” he survived a plane crash that killed fellow band members Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve’s sister), road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and both pilots also lost their lives. In the wake of the tragedy, the band disbanded for a decade before reuniting for a 1987 tribute tour.

Rossington, Van Zant, and Bob Burns founded Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1964. Per the band’s website, the trio met while competing on rival baseball teams. After adding guitarist Allen Collins and bassist Larry Junstrom to the mix, the group shuffled through various names before settling on Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969.

The rest was history. A Rock ‘N Roll Hall Of Fame member since 2006, Rossington contributed to some of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s most enduring tracks, including “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.” Through his aforementioned family and his contributions to rock history, despite his passing, Rossington’s legacy shows no signs of disappearing.

What is episode six going to give us?

Episode Intro

Elk Falls, Kansas.  This episode opens with a woman running through the forest, being chased by something.  She emerges from the trees to enter a barn and begins to chalk some warding on the back of the door.  She hears something behind her and immediately grabs her knife from her backpack.  As she walks around the interior of the barn, the lights flicker, until suddenly she is sucked straight up to the ceiling, out of view, by some unseen force.  The next thing we see is a giant spill of blood from the ceiling onto the floor of the barn.  The amount of blood spilled is a clear indication that whoever this woman was, she didn’t survive the attack.

Dean Winchester:  Hunting has a way of changing a person.  After a while, right, wrong, good, evil… they all start to look the same.  And then it makes you start to wonder, who’s really the monster here?  Them or me?

Back at Mary’s house, we see a struggling Lata, trying to drown out noisy distractions so she can meditate.  When she hears Carlos and John arguing out in the hall, she abandons the effort in frustration and investigates.  John wants Carlos to relinquish his van to him so he can check the woods behind the quarry to look for signs of Roxy or the Akrida.  Carlos comes back at John with a “hard no, Amigo” reminding him that they already investigated the quarry, and in doing so almost cracked the front axle of his van.  Carlos also reminded John that he has a guy who works for City Hall, who will be supplying useful information regarding new land acquisitions, which will reveal the property purchase for the radio tower.  With that information the team will be able to find the Akrida.

This opening eloquently does two things that are pretty important in this episode; it highlights the inner work that is so prevalent in how Lata moves through the world around her, and it shines a spotlight on the ever-growing anger that John is experiencing.  The episode unfolds to move the story forward, but it also opens all the doors necessary to embrace character development.  Something this show does not shy away from.  Which makes for a richer viewing experience and really allows the fans to know the nuance of a character.  What’s more, it’s done with finesse.

Sidebar: Canon and Character Development

Before we dive headlong into this episode, it’s important to recap some relevant information from episode 04-Masters of War, because it plays directly into a part of John’s character development that is vital.  It is not an easy tightrope to navigate, but developing John’s character in particular, is a complex problem.  There has been much speculation amongst fans of Supernatural that John Winchester was/is an abusive father.  This writer believes that observation is both short-sighted and flawed.  You cannot examine that role in a vacuum.  The character of John Winchester is a lesson in topical relevance, norms and the cultural and social milieu of the day.  But what he was, without a doubt, was an angry man.  His angry disposition contributed considerably to being a stern father whose secret knowledge of a world where monsters roam, dictated that his responsibilities as a parent meant he had to prepare his boys for a world in which he would not be present to protect them.  The alternative was to train them to be hunters in his absence.  He pulled from his own history, to treat his boys as though they were soldiers, and with military zeal, his boys would not only be able to protect themselves but could walk quietly amongst ordinary people and save them from the evil that lurked in the shadows.  He raised heroes.  A little broken and flawed themselves perhaps, but heroes, nonetheless.

So how do the writers build prequel John, that will adequately honor the John Winchester of Supernatural?  Tricky business.  There’s that tightrope again.  This episode touches on some of that complexity.  How do they help and nurture the prequel John character enough to keep him from buckling under his own trauma, the trauma that will manifest in the anger he harbors within as a father, while simultaneously, not helping him so much that his later iteration does not come to pass?

Episode 04 is a catalyst in that regard.  It triggers the deep-seated trauma within our young John, by taking his friend Carlos and using him as a stand-in for John’s army buddy Murphy, who was blown to bits from stepping on a landmine.  Not only did the monster-God, Mars Neto, flaunt Carlos’ life in front of him, he mirrored the circumstances to undo every attempt John made to bury the pain.  Once unleashed, John was changed.  That is the version of John that shows up in this episode.  And his friends are scared for him.

A Call For Help

The argument between John and Carlos, and witnessed by Lata, draws Mary into the room to see if everything is okay.  We hear a phone ring and the group follow the sound.  We all discover that Samuel Campbell has a “bat phone” in his study.  Mary takes the call, and the team are on the move.  Mary shares the details of who Tracy Gellar is as everyone rides in Carlos’ van.

Tracy is a friend of Mary’s mom and is practically an aunt to Mary.  She holds some real fascination, as Tracy is a hunter who got out of the life and has been enjoying her retirement for ten years.  Tracy called Mary for help.  An old hunting buddy of Tracy, by the name of Darla, was found dead in her barn.  Darla’s journal concluded with an entry that she was tracking a werewolf.

As they arrive at Tracy’s farm, the team are treated to hearing Mary’s nickname, Cricket.  Tracy lets them know that Darla’s body is still in the barn and the team go to examine the body.  They find claw marks on Darla’s body that are consistent with a werewolf attack, but Carlos finds a claw embedded in the barn ceiling and it is not from a werewolf.  No one seems to know what kind of monster the claw belongs too.  Their discussion is interrupted when Tracy announces that everything is ready.  John asks what is ready and they introduce him to the custom known as a hunter’s funeral.

Sidebar: A Hunter’s Funeral

In a moving scene, with the song “Joan of Arc” by Judy Collins playing in the background, Tracy cleans Darla and preps her body for burning.  It’s a tender act taken with great care to lay her body to rest with dignity.  The scene really pulled at the heartstrings.  I would hazard a guess that for many fans of The Winchesters, this scene triggered memories of the last hunter’s funeral they witnessed; Supernatural S15E20.  It prompted a re-watch.

Going back to re-watch the death scene (or rather, forward in the timeline of John and Mary’s sons) we then find a heartbroken Sam standing beside a funeral pyre, experiencing a gaping hole where Dean used to be.  We bare witness to all that Sam feels.  His equilibrium, ever altered, like his world shifted off its axis, while he beats back the loss that triggers waves of pain and emptiness etched onto his features for all to see.  Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki delivered an emotionally wrenching performance.  Their rendering of this scene was so poignant and beautifully executed that the grief was palpable.

Needle & Bone Taxidermy

After the funeral, the team is all together on Tracy’s front porch being treated to some homemade lemonade.  Tracy offers up her Harlequin romance collection to anyone who wants to read them, and Carlos is tempted.  John wants to capture the monster that killed Darla and use it to lure the Akrida.  Mary interjects that without a means to kill the Akrida, luring them would be unwise.  John seems eager to strike at the Akrida but identifying the thing that killed Darla is top priority.  Lata is missing her “Wilmont’s Guide to Monster Anatomy” that got left at home and suggests visiting a friend nearby who specializes in monster identification.  Carlos volunteers to drive her.

While on their way to see her friend, Lata confides in Carlos.  Seeing Darla’s funeral was a staunch reminder that hunting is violent and she wonders if she is a liability to the team.  The demands of being a hunter are weighing heavily on her.  She prides herself on her ability to do all the science and lore research, but she is a pacifist and is therefore torn between two different worlds.  When the fight comes to them, will she be able to help her friends?  They pull up to the “Needle & Bone Taxidermy” which ends the conversation and has Carlos wondering if Lata’s friend is Norman Bates.

Lata explains that the taxidermy is the front-facing part of the whole operation, which her friend took over from his father.  We are then introduced to Anton.  Carlos seems immediately smitten and kind of loses his mind a little, babbling on about liking Psycho (the movie whose villain is Norman Bates) while Anton confesses, he likes “Rear Window” better.  For anyone who doesn’t know, both of these movies were from Alfred Hitchcock and are masterpieces of suspense and horror.  Lata shows Anton the claw they brought, and they begin to examine it.

The Soucouyant

Back at the farmhouse, Mary and Tracy are chatting in the kitchen while John is just outside the kitchen window.  They talk about Mary’s folks and Tracy asks if they are separated again.  Seems they were separated when Mary was little.  Conversation then turned to Mary and when she was planning on getting out of hunting.  Her plan is to find her dad and the Akrida and then she’s out for good.  Tracy asks what she wants to do and she is considering college.  When Mary asks Tracy if she has any regrets, she says the only regret she has is not getting out of hunting earlier.

Back with Anton, they were able to identify the monster as a soucouyant.  Lata calls Mary on the phone to relay the news and Tracy seems visibly shaken.  She confesses that she has hunted them before.  Tracy was part of a small hunting team of herself, Darla, and two men named Mac and Rob.  They travelled to Barbados to hunt the soucouyant and managed to kill three out of a band of four, who were terrorizing a small town.  They were holed up in a cave, so Mac went in after the remaining monster.  There was a cave-in, and both were killed.  Or so Tracy thought.  Now she isn’t so sure and is wondering if the last one has shown up for revenge.

Just as they have this conversation, the main front door to the farmhouse is burst open and the monster walks in.  It has a flaming hand and shoots the fire at the wall, burning off the protection sigil.  John grabs the fire extinguisher and hits the monster with it as it comes at him.  Mary hits it with the fireplace poker and when it runs outside, John follows it.  Mary grabs a machete and runs outside to help John.  The soucouyant cuts a deep gash on John’s shoulder and Mary comes from behind and chops it’s arm off.  It gets up and runs away.

A New Theory

Fearing that the soucouyant will come back for Tracy, they all leave and go to the Men of Letters clubhouse.  John presses Tracy for answers, confused how the monster got out of the cave.  The other member of their team who is still alive, Rob, called Tracy recently and said he wanted to go back and put Mac to rest properly by giving him a hunter’s funeral.  Neither Tracy or Darla heard back from him, so the new theory is that Rob was killed and the monster, who has remained alive in the cave for the last ten years, came to kill Darla.  The only way to kill them is beheading.

Again, John is pushing for action and wants to go back to the farm and hunt, but Mary urges him to be patient.  The monster has already successfully killed two veteran hunters and cutting off its arm didn’t seem to slow it down.  The really odd thing was that there was no blood, so Lata invited Anton to take a look at the severed arm.  John is agitated and goes outside to work on his shoulder.

Anton and Lata are in the Men of Letters lab and are examining the severed arm.  When they used a bone saw to cut into it, blackish goo spills out of the cut.  Lata looks at Anton, “Is that what I think it is?”

Can we Talk?

Mary goes outside wanting to talk with John who is working out.  He’d rather avoid the lecture he thinks is coming, but Mary is genuinely concerned about him.  Mary tells him how worried she is and has noticed that he has been “off” for the past few weeks.  Everything that happened with Mars Neto didn’t help.  John tells her that being a part of the funeral for Darla really hit home and cremating a woman who used to be a hunter, just like Mary is, means it could be her.  If he needs to push himself to help Mary get out of this hunting life alive, then that is his plan.  Mary challenges that rationale and believes that John is using her as an excuse to avoid his own issues.  She brought up the fact that his mom shared with her that he regularly runs towards danger and has done so since he was a little kid.  He asked that she stop trying to psychoanalyze him.  Before they could talk more, Lata came out to let them know she has something they both should see.  Mary goes inside but John says he wants to cool down first.

Not the Whole Story

Lata, with Anton’s help, finished examining the severed arm of the soucouyant.  She understands why it didn’t die.  The monster was already dead.  The black goo that oozed out when they cut into it, revealed ectoplasm.  Mary demanded answers, wanting to know what Tracy hasn’t told them.

Tracy said that the cave-in that killed Mac and the remaining soucouyant, wasn’t any accident.  They killed him.  She said that when her and Darla formed the team, they brought Mac in, but he was a dark soul from the get-go, but he was a good hunter.  He’d had a rough childhood, abused by his dad, and bullied as a kid, but hunting didn’t alleviate any of his pain, so he turned to dark magic.  Mac became more violent and more aggressive until all the black magic caught up to him and he snapped, turning paranoid he attacked Darla.  Too far gone and more powerful then the rest of the team combined, Mac went into the cave to kill the remaining soucouyant, so they set off some C-4 and caused the cave-in.  Lata admonished Tracy for not helping a friend who was stuck in a cycle of violence, and rather than helping him, they used him like he was some kind of weapon.  Tracy insisted they tried to help him, but he wouldn’t listen.

John Possessed

John goes back to Tracy’s barn looking for the monster, who promptly attacks him.  Mac, who happens to be the vengeful spirit inhabiting the monster shifts into John’s body.  Lata, Mary, Carlos and Tracy show up to find John possessed.  Mac seals the barn so no one can leave and makes it very clear he wants to kill Tracy.  The team do all they can to protect Tracy by fighting Mac, but when Tracy wants to shoot him, Mary begs her not too because of what it will do to John.

Lata steps in and puts herself in harms way to thwart Mac’s efforts to kill Tracy and talks to him about how violence isn’t the answer.  She relays a story from her childhood about what the war did to her father.  She tried to make herself smaller so the violence wouldn’t find her, but it did.  For the longest time it made her feel powerless, until one day it made her angry.  And that anger kept growing inside, just like it did for her father.  Lata acted on that anger for years until she hurt someone, and that’s when she knew she had to make the change.  Lata wants Mac to understand that he has a choice to make.  He can keep hurting those that have wronged him, keep living in that anger and violence, but it won’t bring peace.  Mac looked to Tracy to understand why his team gave up on him, and Tracy was able to bridge that gap, ask for forgiveness and encourage Mac to move on.  Mac released Mary, left John’s body and exited the barn.

Love, Growth and Going Forward

Once the crisis was over and an okay but unconscious John was loaded in the van, Mary said her goodbyes to Tracy.  Tracy vowed to right some of her wrongs by finishing Darla’s hunt for the werewolf.  Anton asked Carlos out on a dinner date.  Lata understood that her place on the team was valuable.  She proved herself an asset that had the ability to help when conventional hunting chose violence as the answer.  Carlos was especially proud of her.  When John awoke from his “hangover” he confided in Mary that their fight about what Mars Neto awoke in him was just part of what he was experiencing lately and that he has wrestled with anger his whole life.  He admitted that hunting was a way to hide from dealing with his issues, but that he is determined to not end up like Mac.  Mary vowed she would not let that happen to him because he means too much to her.  We see John reach out to Lata for guidance in navigating beyond the anger.

Dean Winchester: hunting is not for everyone. You have to be strong, stay sharp, make tough decisions, and it’s not easy. But then again, the righteous things never are.

And in closing, Carlos shares news with the team that his City Hall contact got back to him.  He spreads a map on the table and the red circle marks the spot.  They have found the Akrida.

Prime Video released the first trailer for the Russo Brothers’ international spy series “Citadel,” starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, offering up a mix of “Bourne Identity” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” with a global twist.

The high-stakes thriller picks up eight years after the fall of international spy agency Citadel, which fell to operatives of the shadowy syndicate Manticore. While the notes of the Roy Orbison song might be iconic, the Julia Roberts and Richard Gere movie have a special place in pop culture history. From the iconic looks to the memorable phrases, that story was not a modern-day fairy tale. Instead, it was a journey to a more fulfilled life. With Pretty Woman The Musical, the question of “what’s your dream” has audiences leaving with a smile and sense that more is possible.

When a movie is transformed into a stage performance, the book adaptation can take various forms. Although the story stays mostly intact, some moments that work perfectly on film do not work in live theater. Still, there are ways to keep the heart and the plot while bringing a new perspective to the familiar.

Currently, Pretty Woman The Musical has a National Tour making stops across the country. During a recent stay at Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando, the cast put on an exceptional performance that captured the humor, heart, and determination that has made this story resonate with so many people.

Whether people believe in the fairy tale or see a journey of transformation within the well-known plot may not be the primary objective of this Broadway show. Similar to a jukebox musical, the lighthearted adaptation is meant to have moments of laughter, and scenes of endearment, and leave the audience singing as the curtain goes down.

For Broadway fans, the real treat of the National Tour is that Adam Pascal plays Edward. Whether people remember him in his roles of Roger from Rent or even more recently as William Shakespeare in Something Rotten, Pascal’s distinctive tone adds depth to Edward’s character. At times introspective then later full of bravado, that juxtaposition is what great Broadway stars make look effortless.

While many people wait for Pascal to hit those big notes, it is the quiet moments where everyone holds their breath in anticipation. He compels people to avoid distraction and be absorbed by the moment.

In contrast, Jessie Davidson, who makes her tour debut as Vivian shows the character’s arc. From her moments of vulnerability to her growing confidence, Davidson makes the audience cheer for her triumphs. Without losing the humor of the role, it is the journey that endears her to everyone.

Although the two main characters receive great fanfare, it is Travis Ward-Osborne as Happy Man/Bernie who often steals the show. From the flamboyant dance numbers to reminding everyone that happiness and pursuing a dream is the best part of life, this performance lights up the stage. Not only does it provide a connection between the characters on the stage, but he offers sentiments that resonate after the last note is played. In some ways, it is almost like a modern adaptation of Jimmy Cricket.

Overall, the ensemble invites the audience to laugh, remember the familiar, and put their cares away for a few hours. Even if some people might recall the exact lines from the movie or countdown to hear the actual notes of the Roy Orbison song, the reality is that Pretty Woman The Musical is a lighthearted, enjoyable night of theater.

Pretty Woman The Musical is currently on a National Tour. After leaving Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando it plays Palm Beach followed by dates in Canada and California.

It is a simple question. What’s your dream? While everyone has a dream, Pretty Woman The Musical is a reminder that pursuing that dream should always be a priority.

As technology continues to advance, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more prevalent in the filmmaking industry. AI tools are being developed to help filmmakers streamline their workflow and improve the quality of their films. Here are some of the newest AI tools that are changing the way filmmakers work.

Script Analysis

AI can be used to analyze film scripts to identify potential issues before production begins. This includes analyzing the script for plot holes, inconsistent characters, and other problems. By catching these issues early, filmmakers can make changes to the script and avoid problems during production.

One such AI tool is ScriptBook, which uses machine learning to analyze film scripts and predict the movie’s potential box office performance. It can also predict the audience demographics and suggest changes to improve the film’s commercial viability. RunwayML is another AI tool that can be used to analyze scripts and generate a storyboard, saving filmmakers valuable time and resources.

Virtual Production

Virtual production has been around for a while, but recent advancements in AI have made it even more efficient. Virtual production involves creating a digital environment that can be used to shoot a film. This can include virtual sets, props, and characters.

AI can be used to make virtual production even more realistic by creating more accurate simulations of real-world environments. AI can also be used to generate virtual actors that look and act like real people.

One such AI tool is Unreal Engine, which is used by many filmmakers for virtual production. Unreal Engine uses AI to create photorealistic environments and characters. It can also simulate lighting and camera movements to make virtual production even more realistic. Adobe Sensei is another AI tool that can be used for virtual production, allowing filmmakers to quickly and easily generate 3D models and animations.

Post-Production

AI can be used to improve the post-production process by automating certain tasks. This includes tasks like color grading, visual effects, and sound design. By automating these tasks, filmmakers can save time and focus on other aspects of post-production.

One such AI tool is Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve. DaVinci Resolve uses AI to automatically color grade footage. It can also remove unwanted objects from footage, apply visual effects, and generate subtitles. RunwayML is another AI tool that can be used for post-production, allowing filmmakers to quickly and easily apply machine learning models to their footage.

Distribution

AI can also be used to improve the distribution process by analyzing audience data and predicting the best way to market a film. This includes analyzing social media data, search trends, and other data points to identify potential audiences for a film.

One such AI tool is Pilotly Insights, which analyzes audience data to predict the success of a film. It can also provide insights into how to market the film to different audiences. ChatGPT is another AI tool that can be used for distribution, allowing filmmakers to quickly generate social media posts and other marketing materials.

Overall, AI is changing the way filmmakers work by streamlining their workflow and improving the quality of their films. From script analysis to post-production, AI tools such as RunwayML, Adobe Sensei, ChatGPT and more, are being developed to help filmmakers save time and focus on what they do best: creating great films. While there may be some concerns about the role of AI in filmmaking, it’s clear that AI is here to stay and will continue to play an important role in the industry.

The founder of Russia‘s Wagner group of mercenaries has warned the entire frontline will collapse if his troops in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut do not receive more ammunition.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose organisation has played a significant part in Russian military successes in recent months, said his ammo-starved forces were the ‘cement’ holding the frontline together and the last line of defence to win the war.

‘Today, Wagner is the cement that, as I’ve said previously, is holding the Ukrainian army in place – grinding it down, destroying it and preventing it from deploying to other regions and occupying other fronts.

‘We’re also moving forward and the [Russian] army is forced to follow behind us to save face and prop up their reputation… If the Wagner group pulls back, then the following situation will unfold.

‘It is clear that the front will crumble, the front will crumble for the Russian borders, perhaps it crumbles even further.’

Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose mercenary group has played a significant part in Russian military successes in recent months, said his ammo-starved forces were the ‘cement’ holding the frontline together in a video published on Telegram channel at the weekend

The fighting around Bakhmut has seen First world War-style trench warfare unfold as both sides batter one another with artillery while sheltering in ditches

Prigozhin made the remarks in a four-minute-long video published over the weekend by a Wagner-linked Telegram channel.

Earlier last week he claimed his units had ‘practically surrounded Bakhmut’ – a focal point of the conflict in Donetsk where fighting has intensified in the past week with Russian forces attacking from nearly all sides.

But yesterday he complained that most of the ammunition that his forces were promised by Moscow last month had not yet been shipped.

‘For now, we are trying to figure out the reason: is it just ordinary bureaucracy or a betrayal?’ Prigozhin asked on his usual press service Telegram channel.

The mercenary chief regularly criticises Russia’s defence chiefs and top generals, and last month accused embattled defence minister Sergei Shoigu and others of ‘treason’ for withholding supplies of munitions to his militia.

In his weekend video, Prigozhin said his troops were worried Moscow wanted to set them up as possible scapegoats if Russia lost the war.

‘If Wagner pulls back from Bakhmut, then this is how history will remember us. A group of mercenaries led by Prigozhin convinced President Putin of its necessity… then they fell back and the Ukrainian army broke into the territory of the Luhansk People’s Republic, swept away Luhansk, swept away Krasnodon and entered the territory of Russia.

‘If we move back, then we will go down in history for ever as the people who took the main step towards losing the war. This is exactly the problem that we have now – we are being starved of ammunition.

‘[My fighters] come to me and they say, ”chief, can’t somebody in the depths of the Ministry of Defence, or maybe even higher, explain to the entire Russian people why we had so much trouble?”

‘What if they want to set us up and say we are scoundrels, and say that’s why we are not given ammunition and weapons?’

The Wagner group has for months been central to Russian military effectiveness on the frontlines of Ukraine, having launched a mass recruitment drive in Russian prisons last year.

The group used human wave tactics, piling in underequipped and undertrained men to soak up Ukrainian resources before deploying better-armed and trained mercenaries to break down Ukraine’s fatigued fighters.

But since the demotion of Sergei Surovikin – an army general close to Prigozhin who was previously in command of Russia’s armed forces – in December, Wagner has found itself starved of ammunition and support.

This has prompted suspicions that Russia’s military commander Valery Gerasimov and Shoigu are isolating the mercenaries, condemning them to fail while masking their own army’s woeful performance.

It comes as a British Ministry of Defence intelligence update claimed that Russia is now deploying 60-year-old armoured vehicles to the frontlines in the face of heavy losses.

‘The Russian military has continued to respond to heavy armoured vehicle losses by deploying 60-year-old T-62 main battle tanks (MBT)… In recent days, Russian BTR-50 armoured personnel carriers, first fielded in 1954, have also been identified deployed in Ukraine for the first time,’ the update read.

It added that in despite the upgrades, the vehicles will be sorely outmatched and outgunned.

‘Since summer 2022, approximately 800 T-62s have been taken from storage and some have received upgraded sighting systems which will highly likely improve their effectiveness at night.

‘However, both these vintage vehicle types will present many vulnerabilities on the modern battlefield, including the absence of modern explosive reactive armour.’

Elsewhere in Ukraine, the exiled mayor of Melitopol – a city in the southern Zaporizhzhia oblast – claimed that a Ukrainian attack on a pair of Russian military bases is likely to have killed scores of Putin’s troops.

Ivan Fedorov told Ukrainian TV yesterday that two powerful explosions were heard in the northern part of the city, which was one of the first in Ukraine to be occupied when Russian forces launched their invasion in February last year.

‘In occupied Melitopol, powerful explosions are heard, two enemy bases were destroyed,’ Mr Fedorov said.

According to the mayor, Russian losses as a result of the strike ‘amount to hundreds of people, but the general staff of the armed forces of Ukraine will provide more detailed information.’

‘Today is a weekend of hell for them, just like the whole last week of hell,’ Mr Fedorov added.

Reelz Channel is coming to Peacock.

The niche cable channel will bring its live linear feed and on-demand programming to NBCUniversal’s streaming service beginning March 1.

Reelz Channel’s biggest show is On Patrol: Live, a police reality show that can trace its origins to the canceled A+E series Live PD. OPL, like Live PD, is hosted by Dan Abrams and a pair of former police officers who follow live footage of police on duty across the country. Reelz picked up the show last year, and earlier this month handed it a 90-episode renewal.

Under the terms of the Peacock deal, OPL will stream live on Peacock, and episodes will be available on-demand the day after they air. Reelz also airs other true-crime fare including Cops, Jail and On Patrol: First Shift.

There is one quirk under the Reelz deal: While it will include the channel’s live linear feed, it will not stream Tuesdays in the 10 p.m. hour, as Reelz airs Major League Wrestling in that hour. Peacock has a streaming deal with the WWE, which has exclusivity in the category on Peacock.

Peacock’s deal with Reelz continues the streaming service’s push to add new sources of programming and bulk up its offerings. The WWE is a big piece of that puzzle, and last year Peacock inked a wide-ranging deal with Hallmark Media, which included a live feed of Hallmark Channel and some on-demand programming.

Most notably, the deal gave Peacock access to Hallmark’s trademark holiday movie slate.

With the latest deal, Peaock now has live feeds for Reelz, Hallmark, WWE and local NBC stations.

While Reelz doesn’t have the brand capital of Hallmark, the police programming has a similarly broad audience in middle America. Live PD, before it was canceled amid the protests against police violence in 2020, was the most watched show on cable TV.

Franz Kafka wrote about animals a lot: a monstrous bug, a young panther in a menagerie, a mouse named Josephine who wants to wow you with her song, a dog who sees a powerful triumvirate of other dogs levitating and has some thoughts about it. He wrote about these creatures in prose that is defamiliarized, exhausting, wickedly funny. The Russian composer Ekaterina Shilonosova, who performs as Kate NV, shares a similar sensibility with the Austro-Hungarian writer: On her excellent fourth record, WOW, there is a suite of animals, and she is both rigorous and whimsical about them.

On WOW, NV abandons the slightly more legible songs of 2020’s Room for the Moon, and the cohesiveness of 2018’s для FOR, opting instead for delightfully fractured inscrutability. WOW is dense and hyper-saturated with chintzy synths, field recordings, and heavily manipulated vocals. Call it maximalism; call it pop music for people who happen to enjoy both Karlheinz Stockhausen and Lisa Frank. It exists in a zone that NV has been working in for a while, one that involves fermenting and reimagining everything from Japanese city pop to the ECM New Series to corny ’80s chart-toppers. Opener “oni (they),” which features Japanese-language lyrics written by Foodman, feels like being inside a pinball machine: Each flicker of synth lights up brilliantly, bouncing erratically from point A to B.

Each song is its own absurd room. Like previous records, WOW makes good use of Found Sound Nation’s Broken Orchestra sample pack, sourced from damaged instruments from Philadelphia’s public schools. On “confessions at the dinner table,” there are synths that sound like they’re giggling or yawning, field recordings of a door opening, the sound of clinking dishes. Violin and clarinet burst in at the midpoint. It is like a food fight, rendered in the aesthetics of Věra Chytilová’s Daisies, where two girls in flower crowns stomp around on a table drinking brandy and throwing cake at each other, fucking with everyone they meet.

But NV’s music isn’t twee. Just because something is cute doesn’t mean it’s not rigorous, and her playfulness has a purpose: In upsetting expectations, it’s meant to keep you on your toes. Her songs are slanted, oblique. “razmishlenie (thinking)” builds in such a way that you’d think it would eventually depressurize, yet it does not; it stays at the same level of intensity for the song’s duration. There’s no payoff, but not in a way that is necessarily disappointing. Her music can be a workout; its self-containment can be almost alienating.

Perhaps that’s because there’s not necessarily a narrative. You couldn’t say that WOW is about anything. Instead, it’s defined by its aesthetic cohesion, a beautiful sense of formal seriousness that holds court over the record’s surrealistic menagerie.

The 1960s were a unique decade, full of creativity and experimentation in the realm of science fiction. With adaptations from classic novels and original visionary stories, sci-fi films during this decade provided fans with plenty of memorable and thought-provoking entertainment.

Special effects were on the rise, and many of the stories explored themes of technology, space exploration, alien invasions and encounters, and threats of nuclear war. Audiences were enamored by now classics like The Day the Earth Stood Still, Planet of the Apes, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, but plenty of lesser-known gems from the decade deserve more attention. Here are some of the most underrated sci-fi movies of the ’60s, ranked.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

10 Fantastic Voyage (1966)

20th Century Fox

Though one of the more well-known science fiction classics of the ’60s, Fantastic Voyage is still highly underrated. Directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch, and Edmond O’Brien, the film follows a team of scientists who are turned to microscopic proportions and injected into a scientist’s body to find the blood clot and save his life. However, their mission is complicated by the presence of foreign agents and the short one-hour time limit.

With impressive special effects and a thrilling story, Fantastic Voyage is a must-see for any sci-fi fan. The film was hugely successful, winning two Academy Awards at the 1966 ceremony for Best Art Direction – Color and Best Special Effects. Even with this success, the movie is still overlooked by many, which is a shame considering its progressive story and impressive visuals, not to mention a great turn from Donald Pleasence before his James Bond and Halloween days.

9 Marooned (1969)

Gregory Peck in Marooned
Columbia Pictures

John Sturges’ 1969 film Marooned stars Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna, and David Janssen in a thrilling story of NASA astronauts sent to space for a months-long research mission. The slow-building drama increases as the men deal with a failing engine, a dwindling oxygen supply, and a looming return to earth. The numbingly suspenseful scenes of the astronauts working to survive in space, combined with the absence of a score, make Marooned a genuinely gripping experience.

The film was a critical success and earned an Academy Award for Best Effects, Special Visual Effects in the next year’s Oscars. One of this movie’s unique and all-encompassing elements is the ambient soundtrack used to emulate the environment of being in space. It may be a slow build that seems somewhat flat on a first watch, but Marooned is a classic of its era and deserves more love than it gets.

8 The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969)

The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes 1969
    Buena Vista Distribution

Walt Disney’s contributions to the science fiction genre of the ’60s often go unnoticed, but 1969’s The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes is a charming and enjoyable film. Starring Kurt Russell as Dexter Riley, an accident-prone university student who gets electrocuted while repairing a computer. This leaves him with the intelligence and memory of a computer, leaving him to use his newfound smarts to help save stop a villainous businessman. It’s a lighthearted comedy and an impressive showcase of Disney’s capabilities beyond traditional animation.

The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes is an excellent example of the family-friendly science fiction films of the time. While it may not be as dark and thought-provoking as other films on the list, it’s worth a watch for its unique blend of comedy and science fiction. Kurt Russell’s performance as the bumbling Dexter Riley is a highlight and helps to make the movie an enjoyable experience for viewers of all ages.

7 This Is Not a Test (1962)

This is Not a Test 1962
Allied Artists

This Is Not a Test is an underrated Cold War science fiction flick released in 1962. It’s one of the lesser-known films from the decade, but its gripping story and character conflict make it worth a watch. The movie follows a small-town sheriff who is forced to protect the town’s citizens from an impending nuclear attack. He creates a roadblock to stop travelers, and the group takes refuge in a truck, hoping to survive the fallout.

The film is a robust exploration of the fear and paranoia of the time, as well as a commentary on the human experience of conflict in moments of crisis. With its claustrophobic atmosphere and stark cinematography, This Is Not a Test is one of the most powerful science fiction films of its era. It may not be as popular as others from the decade, but it’s worth seeing for its story and strong performances.

6 Destination Inner Space (1966)

Destination Inner Space 1966
United Pictures Corporation

Destination Inner Space is an underrated sci-fi thriller film released in 1966. The movie observes the crew of a Topside Sealab, a Marine research station on the ocean’s floor. A strange unidentified object has been spotted in the area, and the crew must investigate. Once the futuristic, cylindrical saucer is on board the Sealab, they find themselves dealing with more than just a mysterious object. This creature feature goes on to follow the crew as they fight for their lives against the alien threats.

The low-budget effects and production design may not be as flashy as some other films, but Destination Inner Space is still an engaging watch. The blend of sound and special effects are both effective, and the monster design is still notable today. It’s a great example of mid-century sci-fi, and its unique plot makes it an enjoyable film for any science fiction fan.

5 Panic in Year Zero! (1962)

Panic in Year Zero!
American International Pictures

Panic in Year Zero! is a 1962 science fiction film starring Ray Milland as Harry Baldwin, a father trying to protect his family in the aftermath of a nuclear attack on Los Angeles. With law and order no longer in effect, the Baldwins must fight for survival as they travel through the dangerous post-apocalyptic wasteland. The story touches on themes of morality and ethics, but it’s also an exciting action flick. The family encounters different types of survivors, from the desperate to those willing to use violence to get what they want.

The film is a classic example of the nuclear disaster subgenre, and it’s still a fun watch today. The combination of suspenseful action sequences and moral dilemmas make Panic in Year Zero! an essential piece of science fiction cinema. You can also appreciate the score by Les Baxter, which helps to create an ambiance of dread that continues to linger through its entirety.

4 Quatermass and the Pit (1967)

Quatermass And The Pit 1967
20th Century Fox

Quatermass and the Pit is a classic British science fiction film released in 1967, based on the BBC television series of the same name. It follows Bernard Quatermass, a scientist investigating a strange object discovered at an underground construction site. It turns out to be a human skeleton, and a Martian spacecraft buried deep beneath the surface. Further investigations uncover its mysterious power and create more questions about where humanity came from.

The movie is a gripping, suspenseful thriller that captures the imagination of viewers long after its release, and is said to have influenced Alien. With its dark setting and clever dialogue, the story keeps viewers guessing and is one of the few films to truly create an atmosphere of fear. It’s one of the most overlooked Hammer Horror films, despite its compelling storyline and technical achievements.

3 The Day of the Triffids (1963)

The Day of the Triffids 1963
Allied Artists

The Day of the Triffids is another British science fiction film based on the novel by John Wyndham. It follows Bill Masen, a biologist who wakes up from an accident to find that a meteor shower has blinded most of the population. Soon, he realizes they are being attacked by man-eating plants known as Triffids. Bill and the other survivors must embark on a quest for safety in the midst of a chaotic, post-apocalyptic world.

Related: The Best Sci-Fi Movies According to Rotten Tomatoes

While some overlook this movie due to the script and production design weaknesses, its central concept remains quite memorable. The Day of the Triffids is an eerily effective horror film, and its simple but terrifying premise has made it a true classic. It’s an enjoyable watch for those who appreciate B-movies and are looking for classic sci-fi thrills.

2 The Flesh Eaters (1964)

The Flesh Eaters 1964
Cinema Distributors of America

The Flesh Eaters is a fun 1964 B-movie starring Martin Kosleck and directed by Jack Curtis. It follows an actress, her assistant, and an airplane pilot who become stranded on an island when they hit a storm during their flight. They meet a scientist who lives on the island, but his motives are suspicious. It soon becomes apparent that the island is infested with flesh-eating creatures, forcing them to fight for their lives as they struggle to escape.

The Flesh Eaters is a classic example of low-budget horror with campy effects. Some may find the gore to be dated, but for the time, it was quite effective. Looking past the dialogue and acting, it’s a suspenseful movie that stands out among its peers. It has a monster-movie feel, with a hint of noir and science fiction elements, making it a fascinating watch.

1 Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961)

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea movie
20th Century Fox

With no shortage of talented actors and filmmakers, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is a classic science fiction film from 1961. It stars Walter Pidgeon as Adm. Harriman Nelson, the creator of a nuclear submarine called Seaview. While Nelson and the vessel’s crew are in the Arctic Ocean for testing, the Van Allen radiation belt catches fire and threatens to destroy the planet with fast-rising temperatures. Nelson and his crew are the world’s only hope, as the submarine is the only vessel capable of firing a nuclear missile from the Mariana trench.

This movie has a perfect balance of slow-building suspense and exciting action sequences. It boasts a great cast, with appearances by Joan Fontaine, Barbara Eden, Peter Lorre, and several others. It remains underrated for its time, but it is a pleasant watch for those looking for a classic science-fiction adventure. Numerous films and television shows have been inspired by the story, including a delightful ’60s TV show, cementing Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’s historical place. With the captivating visuals during the underwater scenes and burning skies, it’s a true classic that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.

Triangle-of-Sadness-Poster.jpg

Triangle of Sadness: An American Marxist and a Russian Capitalist on a $250 m yacht As movies go, there are several advantages of being different. Genre films have been beaten to death and critics, not to mention discerning audiences, are dying to watch something different. There are those who are different by virtue of original ideas, while others are different for the sake of being different. Let’s begin with the title: in the first few minutes of the film, you are told that it is som…

Khela Hobe, Review: Om Puri lives, six years after his death Your gut reaction on seeing a film like Khela Hobe is to lambast it, tear it to shreds and dump it in the bin. You can have a field day showcasing your linguistic prowess and delivering a lecture on the prolific use of demeaning adjectives. But somewhere along the line, a modicum of empathy surfaces. This is largely due to the passing away of lead actor Om Puri, a friend, who died over six years ago. Obviously, this film is more tha…

Main Raj Kapoor Ho Gaya, Review: A drunk, moping, slum-dweller, and his three muses Most films have at least a semblance of reference to the title. Some, though, choose to get philosophical when picking a moniker for their screen vehicle. Then there those that have a prosaic sentence as the title, and neither prose nor poetry to justify it. Main Raj Kapoor Ho Gaya is one such. What the title means is “I have become Raj Kapoor.” Raj Kapoor, of course, was the cinematic genius who a…

This feature documentary explores what happened during these decades, told by the people who did the hard work, some at great personal and professional cost.

France-U.K. sales-production-distribution house Alief (“Matadero”) has closed U.K. and Irish theatrical sales for on Tallinn Black Nights Grand Prix winner “Driving Mum, with Newcastle upon Tyne-based exhibition and distribution outfit Tull Stories (“A Clever Woman”) ahead of its bow in at the Glasgow Festival on Monday.

Warsaw-based Aurora Films (“I Love My Dad”) has simultaneously snapped up Polish theatrical rights.

“We could not be happier to have found the perfect match for ‘Driving Mum’ in the U.K and Ireland, key markets in our company’s DNA. What a joyful day, I’ll finally be able to take my mother to one of our movies in London,” Brett Walker, president of Alief, told Variety.

Directed by Reykjavík helmer Hilmar Oddsson (“December”), the film, which recently secured a German-language and Swiss rights deal with Prokino, is a resounding ode to isolation and discovery that embarks on a journey lending focus to aimless protagonist Jon’s (Þröstur Leó Gunnarsson) coming of ripe age while grappling with immeasurable grief.

“Brett and myself are over the moon with Tull Stories’ passion for our irreverent Icelandic fantastic dramedy and their crystal clear marketing vision starting with a full-fledged theatrical release in key cities. That’s literally Hilmar’s & Hlinn’s wish delivered on time, right before our U.K. premiere this Monday at the  Glasgow Film Fest,” remarked Miguel Angel Govea, a partner at Alief.

Tull Stories was founded by Jonny Tull, with now 25 years of distribution, programming and marketing expertise in the cinema, heritage and arts & culture sector; Aurora Films specialises in arthouse distribution.

“We work in cinema exhibition as much as we do in distribution, so the cinema experience is vital to us,” stated Tull, adding that Tull Stories will release “Driving Mum” with a full theatrical window in key cities across the U.K. and Ireland later in 2023.

“We know that its universal themes, bone dry wit and glorious Icelandic setting will be attractive to audiences, so we’ll also be looking to team up with broadcast and streaming partners to ensure that ‘Driving Mum’ continues its journey well after its cinema release,” Tull added.

Aurora Films’ Michal Myslinski further mused, “I’m glad we have this deal. Personally, I like this movie very much, even if it’s not an obvious crowd pleaser.”

The Icelandic-Estonian production from Hlin Johannesdottir (“The Swan”), founder of Iceland’s Ursus Parvus, is a highly relatable and enveloping story, tackling themes of isolation, self-reflection and interpersonal relationships with a quick and biting humor that sets it just off the well-forged path of a traditional road trip film.

With Iceland distribution secured in conjunction with Samfilm, Alief has previously locked with Film Europe (“Close”) for the Czech Republic and Slovakia and Film Stop for Estonia.

After its Glasgow run, the project is set for a North American premiere at the Cleveland International Film Festival in March, an Italian bow at the Bari Film Fest and Asian debut in Taipei.

“From the moment we watched ‘Driving Mum’ we were beguiled,” Tull stated. “Cinemagoers now, more than ever, want to be taken on meaningful journeys and have a great time whilst they’re on them. Hilma Oddsson’s beautiful Icelandic award-winning odyssey does just that through its blend of perfectly pitched rich, dark humour and playful melancholy.”

Vulture Watch

The Television Vulture is watching the Grand Crew TV show on NBCThey may drive you crazy sometimes, but life’s more interesting with your friends. Has the Grand Crew TV show been cancelled or renewed for a third season on NBC? The television vulture is watching all the latest cancellation and renewal news, so this page is the place to track the status of Grand Crew, season three. Bookmark it, or subscribe for the latest updates. Remember, the television vulture is watching your shows. Are you?

What’s This TV Show About?

A comedy series airing on the NBC television network, the Grand Crew TV show stars Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, Aaron Jennings, Justin Cunningham, Carl Tart, and Grasie Mercedes. The story revolves around a group of young professionals in Los Angeles who are all trying to navigate the ups and downs of life and love. One way or the other, they always find time to gather at their favorite bar to “wine down” and unpack it all. Noah (Kellum) is a hopeless romantic who’s too eager to settle down. His sister Nicky (Byer) is a go-getter in real estate who’s also adventurous in romance. Meanwhile, Sherm (Tart) is a low-key genius who plays the dating odds. There’s also Anthony (Jennings), whose true love is his career, and Wyatt (Cunningham), who’s relieved to be married and out of the dating scene. And finally, there’s Fay (Mercedes), who’s recently divorced and looking to start fresh in the City of Angels. These friends prove that life may have its challenges but it’s always better with your crew.

Season Two Ratings

The second season of Grand Crew averages a 0.00 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 0.00 million viewers. Compared to season one, that’s down by 0% in the demo and down by 0% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (includes DVR playback through 3:00 AM). While these numbers don’t include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. Other economic factors can be involved in a show’s fate, but typically the higher-rated series are renewed and the lower-rated ones are cancelled. Find out how Grand Crew stacks up against other NBC TV shows.

NBC
As of March 6, 2023, Grand Crew has not been cancelled or renewed for a third season. Stay tuned for further updates.

Telly’s Take

Will NBC cancel or renew Grand Crew for season three? The sitcom drew low ratings last season, and since it now airs on Friday nights, I don’t expect that to change. The peacock network has very few comedy series, so despite low ratings, I think it can land a renewal.  I’ll update this page with breaking developments. Andor
Photo: Lucasfilm

The first season of Disney+’s Andor surprised everyone with how good it was—well, everyone but the existing band of Rogue One faithful, of which there are several of us—and star Diego Luna says that the team learned a lot of lessons from the first season that they’re taking in to season two. Speaking with Variety at the Miami Film Festival, Luna explained that the second season of Andor “ends where Rogue One starts,” and he insisted that they’re “not changing the ending” of the movie by playing with the timeline at all. “It has a beginning and an end, we all know what’s going to happen.” (Spoiler: Death Star’d!)

That being said, Luna noted that not only was the first season “well received and that people liked it,” but the creators “know why they liked it.” “We actually listen to audiences and critics,” Luna explained, “and we understand what things connected and what didn’t connect.” (Off the top of our head, the one thing that really didn’t connect in Andor was the interminable opening credits sequence… and that’s about it.)

Luna said that, because they have this information about what worked and what didn’t work, and they’re jumping straight in to make the second—and final—season, this season “will end up representing the audience in a different way. Somehow, the audience is part of this season because the interaction we had served as inspiration.” In other words, he says the show is going to give everyone more of what they liked and less of what they didn’t, and it’ll be the show everyone wants it to be.

That probably means season two will have five or six killer monologues instead of three or four, and it will ignore other Star Wars stories even harder than Andor did, and also Mon Mothma’s stupid husband will be even more stupid. It will also probably introduce Cassian’s Rogue One buddy K-2SO. Maybe they’ll give Jyn Erso a nice cameo even though that risks breaking the canon… or maybe Galen Erso will be spotted in the background at some point writing “convenient exhaust port?” on a whiteboard.

Jordan, and writers Keenan Coogler, Zach Baylin, and Ryan Coogler put Adonis Creed right where he needs to be: as the underdog. Our film opens with our hero (Michael B. Jordan) retiring at the top of his game as the heavyweight champion of the world. Years later, Adonis now spends more time with his significant other, Bianca (Tessa Thompson), and their deaf daughter, Amara (Mila Davis-Kent), in their Hollywood Hills mansion.

Boxing may have left Adonis, but he has not left it as he’s dipping his toe into being a boxing promoter. He’s taken on the new phenom Felix Chavez (Jose Benavidez) as his first project and already has a big fight lined up. But one day, while heading to his car, a figure from Adonis’ past appears in the form of Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors). The two were best friends in their youth, living in a group home. In a series of flashbacks, we come to learn that Damian was a promising fighter and Adonis carried his bags. Damian’s career was about to explode, but in an instant, he spent almost two decades in prison in an incident incited by the young Adonis. But after all these years, that’s all water under the bridge, right?

“Adonis is the underdog once again. Damian is physically bigger and stronger.”

Feeling a bit of survivor’s guilt, Adonis invites Damian to train at the gym and work as a sparring partner for Chavez as he prepares for the big fight. But Damian makes it clear that he doesn’t have much time left at his age and wants to become champ. Adonis tells him that he needs to work his way up to the top on his own. Then, in a not-so-freak incident, Damian’s true colors are revealed.

I expect two things from a Rocky/Creed story — boxing and stakes. What Creed III does right are the stakes, as Jordan and company set them pretty high. Adonis is the underdog once again. Damian is physically bigger and stronger. Now, add the fact that he bends the rules and cheats, not to mention his significant axe to grind. On the other hand, Adonis was the one who got away. He saw his best friend go to prison when Adonis could have easily taken his place. His big character flaw is needing to be held accountable for his actions.

Fire crews on the North Shore knocked down a fire inside a parked trailer in an industrial area Sunday evening.

The fire broke out at the G3 Terminal Vancouver in the City of North Vancouver.

“So, we’re on the Vancouver Pile Driving site and they have a roughly 10ft by 30ft ATCO trailer that serves as their lunch trailer,” Danks explained.

“It appears that was where the fire started. It did spread to some of that neighboring temporary structures and some of the shoring that’s close by but that was contained quite quickly and that’s due in fact to the quick response from North Vancouver City Fire Department and the District of North Vancouver fire and rescue services.”

The trailer that was the source of the fire was completely destroyed.

Danks adds, a cause of the fire has not been established but says a full investigation will take place Monday morning.

Around 16 firefighters were at the scene of the fire.

The Apple AR/VR headset isn’t official yet, but leaks surrounding it just keep on coming – and the latest to arrive outlines how the device might work with other Apple products, such as iPhones and HomePods.

A patent (opens in new tab) filed in Europe (via MacRumors (opens in new tab)) describes “Multi-Device Continuity for use with Extended Reality (XR) Systems”, and expands on the Continuity features (such as Handoff and Universal Control) already available on existing Apple gadgets.

We’re assuming that the same Continuity rules will apply to the upcoming AR/VR (or XR) headset: as long as you’re signed into the same Apple ID on all your devices, they’ll work seamlessly together using technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Ease of use

The patent gives a few examples of how this might work. In one, someone wearing the headset would look at an email on an iPhone, and could then throw it over to a larger virtual display using a hand gesture or a look.

In the same way, it would be possible to transfer music playback from an iPhone to a HomePod – all you would need to do while wearing the headset is to make a gesture or just switch your gaze to change devices. You would also be able to get extra screens and widgets showing up in augmented reality while looking at a Mac screen, for instance.

You get the general idea. Of course the usual patent disclaimer applies: these patents don’t always necessarily end up as shipped products or features, though they do give us an idea of what companies are currently exploring.

Analysis: continuity is key

Most of the time, the Continuity features that Apple has baked into its products make life much easier and more convenient. Recently, macOS got the ability to use a nearby iPhone as a webcam for example – a smart idea and well implemented.

It’s really no surprise that Apple would want to extend this to its upcoming AR/VR headset. The device isn’t being launched into a vacuum: Apple has a strong ecosystem of products that can help add to the appeal of the headset.

In the same way that the Apple Watch has become a desirable accessory for the iPhone, the AR/VR headset could be positioned as something that’s not just great on its own, but also when it’s working in tandem with iPhones, iPads, Macs and more.

As with all of these leaks and rumors, we’ll have to wait and see. Most of the chatter we’ve heard so far points towards a 2023 launch for the new device, though the first edition is likely to be priced above the budget of most average consumers.

Mandy Walker has won the American Society of Cinematographers feature-film award for “Elvis,” making her the first woman ever to win that award. She is only the third female nominee in the category, after Rachel Morrison for “Mudbound” in 2018 and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog” last year.

Walker now has the chance to become the first woman to win the Oscar for cinematography, where she is also the third female nominee in the gender-neutral Oscars category that took the longest to nominate a woman. (Morrison was the first there, too.) Her competitors at the Oscars include two who were also nominated by the ASC, Roger Deakins for “Empire of Light” and Darius Khondji for “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truth,” along with James Friend for “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Florian Hoffmeister for “Tar.”

The award for documentary feature went to Ben Bernhard and Riju Das for “All That Breathes,” a lyrical doc about two brothers who rescue birds that fall from the polluted skies of New Delhi. The Spotlight Award, which is designed to highlight cinematography on films that didn’t get wide release, went to Sturla Brandth Grøvlen for “War Sailor,” which was Denmark’s entry in this year’s Oscar race for Best International Feature Film.

Television awards went to M. David Mullen for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Carl Herse for “Barry” and Sean Porter and Jules O’Loughlin, who won in different categories for two episodes of “The Old Man.”

In the first 36 years of the ASC Awards, the winner has gone on to receive the Oscar for Best Cinematography less than half the time. But the record has been better recently, with the two groups agreeing four times in the last five years and seven times in the last 10.

Also at the ceremony, five ASC members received honorary awards. Stephen Goldblatt received the Lifetime Achievement Award, Darius Khondji the International Award, Fred Murphy the ASC Career Achievement in Television Award, Charlie Lieberman the Presidents Award and Sam Nicholson the Curtis Clark ASC Technical Achievement Award.

Viola Davis received the 2023 ASC Board of Governors Award.

The show took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

With the click of a button, you can buy almost anything under the sun from millions of sellers and have it on your doorstep in two days. Going to the airport? Download an app and skip to the front of the line. Need to send money to friends and family? A growing list of companies can do that for you.

Without a doubt, the success of these business models speaks to what modern consumers really want: ease and convenience. Yet all too often we marketers assume that means speed. Yes, Amazon, Clear and Venmo give us what we want quickly, but the foundation of all of them is ease.

In today’s customer experience-led world, ease has become one of the most important elements to consider when designing a new customer experience. Research proves that ease is directly correlated to task completion: The easier the experience, the more likely the customer is to complete the desired action. Though this is hardly news to many marketers, ease continues to be a pervasive design problem across industries. In most cases, it’s not due to lack of resources or commitment to customers but in failing to answer the question: What does ease actually mean?

Let me take a stab at that here: Ease is about making an experience intuitive and solving basic questions for the customer. Why am I here? What should I do next? Why should I do it at all? Solving these basic questions reduces cognitive load and removes points of friction. When a user is presented with an easy-to-use interface and a seamless transition from start to finish, they are more likely to return and purchase again in the future. Not only does this increase customer satisfaction and conversions in the short term, but it also creates loyal customers who will spread the word about your brand. If you can provide them with a seamless experience, they will have faith in your product or service because they know it works well and runs smoothly.

It is important not to equate speed with ease, or as a component of ease, but rather a byproduct of it. The trap of focusing on speed is an easy one to fall into: Instinctively, when things become easier, you can do them faster. Plus, we all know how hard it is to capture and hold someone’s attention, so the conventional wisdom says to get through it as fast as we can before we lose them. Combine these two lines of thinking with how data gets interpreted and how often it doesn’t tell the full picture—the data is likely showing you how long people are staying on your site and how far down the funnel they’re getting. It’s not hard to do the math and say, we only have this much time to get them to the end. But what if you took a few additional seconds to help people, created something compelling enough for them to stick around or your data was telling you more about correlation than causation?

It is essential to remember that consumers are more than happy to give you additional time, even more so if you have a strong brand and value proposition. However, there is one major condition—they want to get good value for their time. Checkout flows, account/profile creation, quizzes and product finders are great examples of places you see this confusion occur. When it comes to people going through these experiences, users should feel they generally know how much time it will take and whether they trust your motives in capturing this data. But most importantly, they need to feel a strong value for their time.

A well-built example is how Brooks Running’s Shoe Finder quiz does far more than just pick out the perfect pair of shoes for runners—it offers a unique, in-depth experience that utilizes science to address needs specific to each user. It starts by letting the user know that it could take up to five minutes and is here to support their goals. Along the way, users are asked questions and provided with quick explanations as to why their answers matter, not only helping them find suitable footwear but also giving valuable insight into their support requirements. And Brooks has clearly done its homework: Via links throughout the process, they back up all assertions made regarding how different body movements impact shoe choice. It’s a great example of why Brooks has a great reputation, strong authority and such a loyal following.

When creating an online experience, ask yourself: Can I reduce complexity and focus on transparency? How can I make sure my customers don’t feel overwhelmed? Are users always best served by removing as many steps and screens as possible? These questions should provide guidance when creating an engaging yet intuitive experience.

Every consumer is judging all their interactions through the lens of their last, best experience. It no longer matters, and hasn’t for quite a while, if you are best in your category. To win, you need to be the best in class.

Consumers’ expectations are higher than ever, and a big part of the expectation is that things should work the way they expect it to. Brands would be well advised to slow down, take their time and help users through this process while showing at every step that this is a good use of their time and they will be glad they did it. If you do this right, you’ll have created an engaging customer experience that leaves people feeling satisfied each time. And you don’t have to take my word for it—that’s what testing is for.
