Matthew Lillard is in his Renaissance era.

His latest film, Five Nights at Freddy’s, is smashing box office and streaming records, he has a new improv show premiering on Amazon’s Freevee next week, his Quest’s End whiskey sold out its first drop, and he runs a luxury Beadle & Grimm’s with some of his closest friends.

“This is a really lovely little comeback moment for me,” Lillard tells The Hollywood Reporter, before reconsidering that sentiment. “I sort of want to quote LL [Cool J], ‘Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years.’”

Lillard is no stranger to a successful franchise, of course, having starred in Scream and Scooby Doo — but the overwhelming success of the film adaptation of a popular video game about a haunted restaurant called Freddy Fazbear’s isn’t lost on him.

Freddy’s scared up an astounding $80 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend — even with a day-and-date release on Peacock. The film from Universal and Blumhouse set an all-time record for Halloween weekend, is the biggest horror opening so far in 2023, and is the third highest ever for the genre (behind only New Line’s It films). It has passed $220 million globally — and in the first five days of its release became the most-watched Peacock title ever.

“It’s exciting to be a part of this thing that has become an international sensation,” Lillard says. “I realize that these opportunities don’t come around that often. It’s been a really rich, joyful moment because I can sort of sit back and appreciate it on a deeper level.”

In his first interview about the film post-strike, Lillard spoke with THR about the pressure of playing an iconic monster and explained Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill! in a way even D&D newbies can understand.

[The following Q&A contains spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy’s.]

Lillard in Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Did you expect this kind of reaction to Five Nights at Freddy’s?

When I got the offer to do the movie, it was an incoming call. Basically, the proposition was go sit with [director] Emma Tammi, and if you guys get along, and you want to do the movie, you’ll get the offer. Every time that happens in my life, it usually means the movie’s pretty bad. At this point in my career, it’s not like I’m out there just getting Academy Award opportunities. I have to fight for those great roles. We me, and she explained the character, and he’s the Voldemort in the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe.

I came home, and I was talking to my wife about it, and my middle child was sitting there, and they heard me say Five Nights of Freddy’s and were like, “Wait, who are you playing?” I said, “William Afton and some rabbit.” And they were like, “Dad. That is going to be huge!” Then, my son came in, and he affirmed the exact same thing. The fact that the two of them agreed on something was crazy.

Scott Cawthon, the game designer, said to me at some point, “In a year or two, nobody’s going to be able to picture this character without it being related to you.” I kind of brushed that off as hyperbole. I took the job — and at conventions I immediately I saw my line triple in size. Every third kid would come up saying, “I cannot wait for you to be a part of this movie and this franchise. We’ve been waiting eight years for the film.” They were so excited. You start seeing projections coming out for the movie — and, in the back of my mind, I was like, “I think it’s going to be way bigger.” I’m in the trenches at these conventions. Kids come up to me all the time. Cut to early projections being $40 million and then doing $80 million on the first weekend. It was remarkable and super exciting.

I went into it cold. I knew it was based on a video game, but I didn’t know anything other than that. Finding out you were the villain was a fun twist for people who were not familiar with the game.

It’s really interesting. Jason Blum said multiple times that this is a movie that is built for the fans. I think he’s right. They weren’t that concerned with whether [other] people like the movie, and I think they were right with the idea of like, “Hey man, this isn’t a movie for everyone. This is a movie for this fan base, and we are going to bet that they’re going to come out and support it.” Their bet was 100 percent on the mark, and I think that they did a great job appealing to that community in an authentic way.

For people who are not familiar with the game, how would you describe your character?

I play a character that is living in plain sight in the world, and he is a horrible monster. Toward the end of the film, when my daughter can’t handle a situation, I have to step in and take over. I do not accomplish that goal and end up meeting my demise. It’s the first step in a journey that has this rich canon that spans multiple video games. I play a monster who, at the end of the day, gets his comeuppance and is thrown into this horror realm that he created.

The hard part about playing this part is the pressure I put on myself to honor the fans, to deliver a great performance in an iconic role. There are millions of kids worldwide, and people that started playing as kids and are now adults, that have an expectation that this film will deliver on a really great level. So, being this iconic bad guy, the amount of pressure I put on myself to not suck is pretty extraordinary. That’s the hardest part.

What did you think of it being PG-13? I think it was very, very smart. A PG-13 scary movie on Halloween weekend that’s based on an extremely popular video game.

Yeah, it turns out that’s a recipe for success. I think it’s on-brand for what the game is. There’s a tension to it. There is a jump scare factor to it. It doesn’t have to be violent to be scary. So, I think the PG-13 is right. I’m going to give all the credit to Scott and to Emma. Most other people would try to get away from the IP and make something more scary, and look for a more traditional road to success. In a movie like this, they’d push the horror, they’d push the gore, they’d push the violence. To both of their credits, they adhered to what was needed for this community. It’s not very often that you get to hold onto your North Star in the creative process, and I think they did a good job of establishing a goal and successfully delivering on what they wanted to do.

What did your kids say?

I think they’re more chuffed that I’m in the movie than with the performance in the movie. My middle kid called me crying because they were so happy for me when the movie came out. They went to the movie with all their friends, and I think they were very proud of me being a part of it. It was important to me, and I think it was fun for my family. I haven’t been in a movie that’s appeared in a movie theater since they can remember. For me, personally, it has been a very humbling moment in my career. I’m 53, and I’ve had a couple franchises in my career that have been successful. I [had thought] maybe that part of my career is dead and over, and that’s fine. I’m still doing all kinds of fun stuff, and I’m really excited about the things I’m doing. To get this opportunity out of the blue to have another franchise that could make a real impact on my career is humbling and exciting, and my kids are thrilled.

The strike’s been over for like 36 hours, so I’m sure they’re already talking to you about a sequel.

This is the first conversation I’ve had about the movie ever. We couldn’t do press the entire time. So, the idea that we’re sitting here having this conversation is amazing because that movie opened day-and-date with Peacock, which didn’t hurt the opening, but it certainly hurt the second weekend, and I’m sure it’s going to hurt this weekend. We weren’t able to support it. All those traditional avenues of publicity weren’t available to us. I’m excited to see when they greenlight the second movie, the plan we put together to make it even bigger and even more successful.

What was it like for you to not be able to talk about something you’re excited about? I saw the video that you made on Instagram for your fans where you’re like “I can’t talk about this thing, but thank you for your support.“

I have so many more things going on in my life right now than I’ve ever had, and the good news is that I’ve learned not to seek out validation from this godforsaken industry. It feels great, but the reality is I have a Dungeons & Dragons company that’s launching a new TV show on Freevee that I am just as excited about. I just launched my own whiskey company on Oct. 8, and it was so successful we’re reissuing the first drop. We just did a poetry slam for kids living at Five Acres, an event that my wife and I created together. Those are the things that I put my energy into. Those are the things that I seek satisfaction from. I don’t think you can survive in this industry looking for validation from film and television because it’s just too fickle. If I was depending on that sort of affirmation, I wouldn’t still be acting. I would be doing something else.

Being 53 years old — and being around the block a couple times — I have a much deeper sense of appreciation in this moment than I probably have ever had because I didn’t expect it. I realize that these opportunities don’t come around that often. It’s been a really rich, joyful moment because I can sort of sit back and appreciate it on a deeper level.

Tell me about the Freevee show and explain it to me as someone who has never played Dungeon & Dragons.

Here’s the good news: We are the onboarding show for everyone who’s never played D&D, who is D&D curious. I have a Dungeon & Dragons company that I started five years ago with my four best friends called Beadle & Grimm’s. We make high-end box editions for games like Dungeons & Dragons or Critical Role or Pathfinder or Magic: The Gathering. We created this niche of luxury game accessories for ultimate geeks. That company is thriving. We came up with an idea called Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill! It’s very rules-light, and we pitched it as Whose Line is it Anyway? meets Dungeons & Dragons. It’s an improv comedy show that is a one-hour D&D love letter.

Matthew Lillard in Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill!.

Lillard in Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill!.

What does the title mean?

It’s a riff off of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, which is the Russ Meyer movie from the ’60s. It’s campy, it’s silly, and that’s kind of the tone of the show. Every episode is the story of four first-level characters, which is the basic level, very newbie characters. It’s a story of these four heroes going off into the world and, unfortunately for them, they run into a legendary Dungeons & Dragons monster like Tiamat the Dragon, or like a purple worm, and get completely obliterated.

I know it sounds really weird, but the show is super funny. At the end of the day, it’s about what people do when faced with their ultimate demise. What does a hero look like? Every episode has moments of people having real human connection points. One of the last episodes we did, the conceit of the show is a family is trying to resurrect a father, and they want him to sign off on this will. My dad is very sick with dementia. It’s horrible, a horrible experience and, in the show, I was playing this character who’s desperate to hug his father one more time. As we were going through the game, I was getting deeply connected to my own experience with my own dad.

At the end of the show, we do this thing called the epitaph. These characters get wiped out. What are the things your friends say about you on the day of your death? People get connected to their characters, and they have this really sweet moment at the end of these shows. Anyway, at the end of the show where I was trying to hug my dad, I couldn’t get a word out. I was sobbing. Everyone ended up in tears. The incredible thing about Dungeons & Dragons is that it’s a game that is really about sitting around a table and telling stories, and you end up connecting to that story. In this moment, I had this deep connection to what was happening and I had a real reaction that was cathartic and emotional. I think that sort of encapsulates the beauty of the game and the beauty of the show.

Is there anything else that you especially want people to know about right now?

I would love to talk about my whiskey company. We created this company called Find Familiar Spirits, and the idea is that we are building high-end whiskey experiences around fandoms. We just dropped something called Quest’s End, and it’s a gaming whiskey. Each box comes with a story. We drop four different bottles every year and each bottle has the continuation of the story. The idea of building something high-end and luxury for fans, not appealing to all four quadrants, but going after hyper-specific communities and speaking to them in an authentic way, I think is super powerful. We do that with Beadle & Grimm’s. We’re doing that with the whiskey company. I think it relates to why Scott and Five Nights has been so successful. When you give a community that feels like they are outsiders something special, something curated, that community will come out and support it. I think that’s a really powerful lesson.

Matthew Lillard is in his Renaissance era.

Jamie Lee Curtis is passing on a lesson for her children to follow and telling the “haters” to “back the fuck off.”

The “Halloween” star set the record straight on a couple of issues, including her recent Instagram debacle, as she accepted the Advocate award as one of the Out 100 honorees at the magazine’s celebration, letting one message ring clear above all others: “Freedom is the goal.”

“Freedom is the goal for all LGBTQ human beings. Freedom is the goal and my love for both of my daughters is absolute,” she said, referring to her daughters Ruby and Annie Guest. In 2021, Curtis opened up about her youngest coming out as trans telling AARP The Magazine, she and her husband Christopher Guest “have watched in wonder and pride” as they witnessed her transition and shortly after, her wedding which Curtis officiated.

“It has never wavered and it will never waver and as their mother it is my job to help protect them. And I hope teach them that this is what you do when you’re a parent. You suit up and you show up with your heart open and your arms outstretched and your aim true. And your job is to tell the haters to back the fuck off,” she continued in her acceptance speech.

She then took a turn in her speech, addressing a recent social media blunder that set the internet ablaze as fans of the actress were quick to call out a mistake on her Instagram page.

The actress recently made headlines last month when she accidentally posted a photo of children in Gaza to her Instagram timeline, mistakenly claiming that they were Israeli, in an attempt to show support for the youth victims trapped among the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The post has since been deleted, but Curtis had this to say in her first statement addressing the moment: “Love, acceptance, family and community are my cornerstones. But I’m also human and therefore I am flawed and contradictory. And I make mistakes. I post things incorrectly, and I say the wrong thing occasionally, and I try to own them. But, in this time of great conflict around the world, we are all every one of us are trying to find our individual center of care, and compassion, and outreach, so that we can use our voices to help people amidst the cacophony of hate that is surrounding us.”

She added: “My entire life has been focused on the care and treatment of critically ill and injured children, wherever they are, whoever they are, whatever country they’re from, whatever their circumstances, religious affiliations. I will continue to do that, amidst all of the anger and division and cleaving of our shared coexistence our shared humanity. And tonight, I hope you will join me as I pray for the safe release of all hostages all over the world — especially children — and I pray for the cessation of violence perpetrated against all people all over the world, especially the children.”

“Mostly, tonight, here in this community, I pray that homophobia and transphobia that has been championed in the name of religion by the right is exposed and silenced as wrong by the love of humanity that is the center of our gay and our trans community,” she said in closing.

Brandi Carlile onstage at the Out100 Celebration at NeueHouse Hollywood on November 9, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

The rest of the night was a continuous eruption of colors with guests and honorees including Brandi Carlile, David Archuleta, Dylan Mulvaney, Cody Rigsby, Anthony Bowens, Mrs. Kasha Davis, Trixie Mattel, Tan France, Ronen Rubenstien, Symone, Laith Ashley, Brian Michael Smith, and Laci Mosley swarmed the Hollywood hot spot in a rainbow of fashions.

Colman Domingo, Dylan Mulvaney, Jonathan Bailey, Sasha Colby, Gio Benitez, Robin Roberts, Wayne Brady, Brittney Griner, were also among the list of honorees.

Accepting the Icon award, Carlile went on to take the stage next, lamenting on what her representation in media means for the generations to come.

“We don’t have a lesbian ‘Golden Girls,’ you know what I mean?” the singer said. “And I thought about the annals of LGBTQIA+ history and the fact that so few of us are represented in domesticity, in family, and the aged state, and I thought about the fact that the way we identify ourselves is so interwoven into Western pop culture that if we don’t see an old version of us, we don’t think we will love a long life and that’s why nights like tonight make so much of an impact on our family and our community.”

“To think that I was cutting out pictures of lesbians in power suits as a kid and that I might be that lesbian today in a power suit that some little girl might cut a picture out of me and hang me on her wall and give me a kiss before she goes to sleep,” she said.

Four people, including a pair of minors, are facing multiple charges after allegedly attempting a crime spree across Hamilton, Ont., on Thursday morning, according to police.

Investigators say the series of incidents began when masked individuals walked into the KC convenience store on Parkdale North, holding a knife and making demands.

When the business owner rejected them, the suspects fled in a stolen white Honda van.

After the owner of the convenience store messaged other businesses, the accused were thwarted at a Big Bee store after an employee locked doors when they arrived, say police.

Detectives say the group would also come up empty at the Wholesale Club at Nash and Barton streets in an attempt to steal a vehicle in front of the driver.

They would subsequently crash into another car in an attempt to flee.

NBCUniversal has acquired Commitment to Life, a documentary about the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The film from Emmy Award-winning documentarian Jeremy Schwarz (Vito) will premiere on Peacock on Dec. 1, designated as World AIDS Day. Its cable network debut will be in early 2024 on MSNBC.

When AIDS first emerged in the United States in the early 1980s, Los Angeles became one of the cities immediately impacted. The documentary shows how L.A.’s gay community and allies mobilized to fight the disease despite a lack of funding, intense fear about AIDS, and an administration in Washington that would not confront the epidemic for political reasons.

The film had its world premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Watch the trailer above.

Nvidia’s H100 GPU is among the most popular products the tech giant has launched in recent years, albeit with some notable pricing concerns and lengthy delays on orders.

Luckily, there are more cost effective alternatives that customers may not be aware of – namely the L40S series.

This powerful sibling GPU to the H100 offers twice the memory and is a cheaper option for those without the financial clout to invest in the more pricier range.

“Fascinating” H100 alternative

Just like its H100 and A100 counterparts, the L40S GPU is built specifically to power the next generation of data center workloads in the age of AI, capable of coping with the intense pressures of generative AI and LLM inferencing and hefty 3D graphics workloads.

Serve The Home managed to get its hands on an L40S and sang its praises, dubbing it a “fascinating” and cheaper alternative to the H100.

“The L40S is something quite different. Nvidia took the base L40, a data center visualization GPU using Nvidia’s newest Ada Lovelace architecture, and changed the tunings so that it was tuned more for AI rather than visualization,” the publication said.

The L40S still boasts typical features found in its predecessor, the L40, such as ray tracing cores, DisplayPort outputs, and NVENC/NVDEC with AV1 support.

However, in this instance, more power is allocated toward the AI portions of the GPU, making it a powerful piece of kit for training models on a budget.

The L40S has far less memory capacity than the A100, which is a notable downside to this series. However, what it lacks in size it makes up for in performance.

The GPU supports both the Nvidia Transformer Engine and FP8, meaning that it can significantly reduce the size of data and requires less memory bandwidth.

Metrics from Nvidia show the GPU offers tensor performance of up to 1,466 teraflops alongside an impressive RT core performance of 212 teraflops.

Nvidia L40S: A cost effective alternative

Cost, naturally, is a key selling point for the L40S. At current rates, the H100 is around 2.6x the price of the GPU, making it a far cheaper option.

Availability is also another notable advantage. H100 GPUs have proven immensely popular since launch, making them hard to get ahold of.

Being a more obscure and less well known GPU means the L40S is more easily accessible without lengthy waits.

EXCLUSIVE: As part of Starz‘s ongoing companywide staff reductions, the network is restructuring its original programming operation under Kathryn Busby, Starz’s President of Original Programming.

Leaving the network are Kathryn Tyus-Adair, SVP, Original Programming; Alex Alberts, Director of Original Programming; Jordan Lippetz, manager, Original Programming; as well as SVP and Head of Production Kevin Hamburger.

Most recently, Starz’s original programming executives have been handling both development and current programming responsibilities. Under the new setup, development and current will be two separate groups.

Samantha Nissen, SVP Original Programming, will head Current, with Sebastian Arboleda, VP Original Programming, reporting to her. Christina Jokanovich, SVP of Original Programming, will head Development, with Tara Roy, Director of Original Programming, reporting into her. Giovanna Desselle, Director Original Programming, will work on both current and development.

Karen Bailey, EVP Original Programming, will become Head of Production, succeeding Hamburger, while continuing to handle creative on some select titles.

The Original Programming restructuring and executive departures are part of Starz’s plan to lay off 10% of the company staff ahead of its separation next year from Lionsgate, which was relayed in a memo by CEO Jeff Hirsch last week.

“As difficult as it is, with many of our employees being impacted, we are making these changes to align our organization with the growth areas of the business and to prepare us for our next chapter as a standalone company,” Hirsch wrote in the memo.

Back in September, Hirsch said that Starz is reining in spending on content but not in a way subscribers would necessarily notice.

“It’s not less content — it’s less-expensive content,” he said. “There are a lot of ways to do that. You can go from scripted to unscripted. You can do, instead of 58-minute shows, you can do 52-minute shows. You can do newer shows vs. older-season shows. In the arc of shows, when you go from Season 3 to Season 4, most of the talent gets big raises, so there’s a big cost spike there.”

Since the end of the WGA strike, Starz has greenlighted two new series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, and The Hunting Wives.

During the same period, the network canceled Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting after two seasons each and opted not to go forward with two new series whose production had been interrupted by the writers strike, an Ava DuVernay romantic drama series and The Venery of Samantha Bird.

  • A new concept art from the Creature Commandos animated series reveals the gritty yet colorful settings and design of the show.
  • Creature Commandos will feature military heroes with special abilities, including a werewolf, vampire, and other strange beings.
  • The cast of the series includes stars like Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Sean Gunn, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, and Zoë Chao, creating a strong foundation for the success of the new DCU franchise.

A new concept art from DCU‘s Creature Commandos animated series has surfaced online, offering a first look at the design of one of the first projects from the new canon that James Gunn and Peter Safran are building to reboot the franchise.

While most of the eyes of DC fans are on David Corenswet’s physical transformation on his way to becoming the new Man of Steel for Superman: Legacy, there is another of the future titles of the new DCU that has made significant progress. This is the Creature Commandos animated series, one of the central productions of the first phase of the new extended universe, titled Gods & Monsters.

Through Reddit, the user DCEU Leaks shared a series of images that offer a first look at the general design of the show, showing quite gritty but also colorful and imposing settings. The images also include a look at some characters, Eric Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein:

Creature Commandos will follow the adventures of a group of military heroes with special abilities created during World War II, which includes a human leader, a werewolf, a vampire, among other strange beings.

Who Stars in Creature Commandos?

DC Comics

To create a new strong and stable canon, James Gunn will have to draw on a group of great stars and future promises that create balance for the franchise. Creature Commandos is one of the most important projects within the new DCU, since it will be one of the first titles to be released, marking a path of success or failure for the future of the franchise. That’s why Gunn and Safran have chosen a great cast to voice these characters. The most interesting thing, however, is that they have already confirmed that if an actor plays a character in an animated project, if that character later appears in a live-action version, it will be played by the same actor.

The cast of the series is led by an action film legend who also has experience in superhero movies. MCU and The Purge star Frank Grillo will voice Rick Flag Sr. He will be joined by fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe member and Stranger Things star David Harbour, playing Eric Frankenstein. Alan Tudyk, who was part of the DC universe in Doom Patrol, will play Dr. Phosphorus, and James’ brother and another former MCU/DCEU alum, Sean Gunn, will voice G.I. Robot.

Maria Bakalova from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will follow Gunn on his new adventure and will play Rostovic, while the Game of Thrones and Obi-Wan Kenobi star Indira Varma will voice The Bride of Frankenstein. Finally, The Afterparty star Zoë Chao will play Nina Mazursky.

Earlier this year, Harbour expressed his excitement for working on Creature Commandos, praising the story developed by Gunn:

“I didn’t know what it was when it was sent to me; I met with James, and he sort of laid out a lot of stuff. It’s really exciting. He considers it some of the best stuff he’s ever written. It’s hilarious, and the character is great. I think it’s been announced that it’s Frankenstein, and it’s a very colorful, terrific character. So, yeah, we’ve started to shoot stuff. I’m not one to really break, but during this, it is wildly funny stuff. So, yeah, we’re shooting. It’s hilarious and I can’t wait for people to see it.”

During the 2023 Blizzcon Opening Ceremony, the first expansion was announced for Diablo 4 as the Vessel of Hatred. Although the main announcement was a short teaser, we were given an idea of what to expect from the major 2024 content drop and some of the details are already enticing.

When the Vessel of Hatred drops, there will be a brand new class that has never been seen before in a previous Diablo 4. No details were given on what the class could be, but I’m sure players will start speculating about leaks as soon as possible. The Crusader was what many in the community were hoping for. Now, we know that’s not the case.

Image via Blizzard Entertainment.

Along with the new class, there will be a fresh area for players to explore. Based on the teaser trailer for the Vessel of Hatred, we can expect a jungle area that looks similar to Kurast and the surrounding forests from Diablo 2. Kurast was originally part of Khejistan, so if the new zone is attached to Sanctuary, it will likely appear on the southwestern side of the open world.

At the end of the announcement, we also learned that the Vessel of Hatred will be released in late 2024. If there are no delays, we can all jump onto the expansion in about one year from now. No direct date was given though, so prepare yourself if the content is moved to early 2025 instead. Nothing indicates that’s the case, but delays are always possible.

Of course, the Diablo 4 expansion will likely have overhauls to game systems and we know it won’t be free. Until we get closer to the full release, we’ll have to wait for those specific details. In the meantime, jump back into Season 2, beat up Lilith some more, and prepare for Season 3 within a couple of months.

In 2019, I wrapped production on a web series I directed that ended up premiering at Dances With Films. Getting it off the ground, produced, edited, and delivered to a festival required the use of countless different tools. From storyboard applications, call sheet templates and shot list creators, it was a job in and of itself just to manage everything me and my team needed to get the project finished.

We even did post-production during a global pandemic.

When I heard about PRODUCER, a cloudspace that allows you to collaborate with your entire team, all I wanted to do was go back in time and redo the entire production with this one application in our pocket.

It would have replaced Studio Binder, my contact list, and my shot list toolkit, and even enhanced my post-production process with a Frame.io-style collaboration tool.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg because PRODUCER offers a free account where you can organize 1 to 2 projects, making it a perfect tool for budget creatives.

So how can one application do all of that and more? Let’s start at the beginning.

Building PRODUCER

Inspired by mentor, supporter, and film enthusiast Georges Kern (CEO of Breitling), founders Xaver Walser and Paul-Émile Joessel created PRODUCER as a tool not to exploit the market but to create the one thing commercial and film productions are all about—efficiency.

After starting his own commercial film production company and creating commercials for global brands such as JetAviation, Audi, and IWC, to name a few, Walser found himself struggling with the usual chaos of coordinating film productions.

Much like I discovered on my project, Walser realized how many different tools he used just to coordinate—organizing a team, communicating with everyone involved, storing all the contacts, assets, and data, and making it accessible to everyone.

It was a waste of creative energy.

From this struggle, PRODUCER was born. A browser-based application that combines all of the filmmaking steps—development, pre-production, production, post-production, and delivery—and lets you manage them in one place.

The ultimate goal of PRODUCER is to make any production, be it a commercial, music video, documentary, or narrative film, as smooth and frictionless as possible.

It’s a tool that supports all of the following workflows under one roof:

  • Above-the-line hiring process
  • Moodboards
  • Script and storyboard
  • Cast and crew contacts
  • Locations and scouting information
  • Casting
  • Shooting schedule
  • Call sheets
  • Cloud-based post-production collaboration
  • Licensing and contracts
  • And final deliverables

But that’s just what the PRODUCER offers now. The team behind it is always developing and deploying new features and functionalities based on the feedback and needs of the creatives who use it.

The ProFLow view that shows you the entire project at a glance.

PRODUCER

As a producer, having all of that in one place can be the difference between coming in under budget vs. not finishing at all. But while it’s built for the producer, it’s a tool that all departments can make use of, from the Casting Director and Wardrobe Department to the Director and Director of Photography.

Let’s use my 2019 webseries as an example to see how I would have used this tool and how it will change the way you produce your next project.

Stupid Cupid is now streaming on the Reel Women’s Network, but the project didn’t come to fruition without its struggles. Let’s look at each step that PRODUCER encompasses to see how it would have helped ease those struggles back in 2019.

DEVELOPMENT

Written, produced, and starring Sarah Randall Hunt, Stupid Cupid began life as a short film about dating in NYC. From this little project, Hunt and I envisioned a bigger story that would see the main character create their own dating app that would develop a mind of its own.

Managing our drafts was a cumbersome process, as we used Gmail to send drafts back and forth. With seven episodes in total, it was challenging to keep our draft versions organized across two different computers and several different email threads.

In PRODUCER, all drafts can be uploaded and managed in the cloud interface. In addition, all your mood board assets also live in the cloud. These can be shared, commented on, and approved as needed by stakeholders. For us, it would have saved countless hours of doing it on an actual piece of craft board.

PRODUCER

We also built our storyboard for Stupid Cupid in Apple Keynotes, and while it was a nice application to use, it’s not built for that sort of thing.

PRODUCER allows you to build your storyboard in the cloud and add useful information like camera angle, movement, lens choice, FPS, characters, locations, and even lights and props. There’s even a place for the director’s notes.

Getting all of that info onto our Keynote project would have been time wasted and while our storyboards did enough, they lacked information that was valuable to our crew.

PRE-PRODUCTION

This is where PRODUCER would have been the most useful to our project. When hiring crew and talent, Hunt and I used email and different casting portals to fill out our roster. As you can imagine, managing all of that and keeping it organized was even more difficult than keeping track of our scripts.

For casting, PRODUCER allows you to create character nodes within the application where the creative team can include gender, general and physical descriptions, and other defining traits. Each character node can then be populated with your talent candidates, all with their headshots, names, role choices, and contact info.

This makes casting a breeze as everything is stored in one place.

PRODUCER

For the crew, all of your pertinent information and contact info is also stored in the cloud, separated by the different departments.

From here, you can manage all of your contacts and hiring choices.

If we had this efficiency on Stupid Cupid, we would have shot the project a year ahead of schedule (and I wish I was being hyperbolic).

From this same online portal, you can organize your location choices and create a shot list, which would have been incredibly useful for our production. When we hired our DOP, we used scanned rough sketches and temp photos in Apple pages to create our shot list. This was then paired down to a text-only document that we used on set.

PRODUCER would have kept our entire location scout and shot list in the cloud, with all of the detailed information your shot list required, as well as photos. And we wouldn’t have needed to print out our shot lists as we could have pulled them up on an iPad while on set.

The time we spent on creating and managing the above documents was immense, and it’s a miracle we made our pages for each day.

PRODUCTION

When we finally arrived in New York to shoot our webseries, two things happened. We lost our lighting gear rental and our UPM. A guardian angel managed to get us our lighting gear, and Hunt worked with our AD to make sure our call sheets and shooting schedules were prepped for each day.

This required a lot of work in Apple Pages, StudioBinder, and a whole lot of paper.

And once again, PRODUCER would have saved our bacon. Our entire call sheet could have been generated using our contact and shot list from within PRODUCER. Then it’s as easy as generating a PDF and sending it out.

POST-PRODUCTION & DELIVERY

Finally, we get to the finish line. Thinking back on this project and the effort we spent finishing this series during a pandemic, it’s another miracle it ever got done.

While I edited and color-graded the project, we had a VFX artist for screen replacement and a sound designer for the final mix and foley. Managing this went as well as you could expect during a pandemic. Getting the assets for each person was easy, but giving notes was a different story altogether. Making notes, labeling them with timecode, and keeping things organized via email wasn’t easy.

Sure, we could have used something like Frame.io, but that would have been another application to add to our list. One that our team would have needed access to.

With PRODUCER, post-production is handled in the same place as everything else and is broken down into eight different steps:

  • First Rough Cut
  • Motion Design
  • First and Second correction
  • Picture Lock
  • Sound
  • Color Grading
  • And Final Film

PRODUCER Maker Machina Post-Production

Supervise post-production right in the application and approve every step.

PRODUCER

In each step, your creative team can upload the file right into PRODUCER. From there, stakeholders view the assets, make timeline markers, add comments, and even draw on the frame to emphasize their corrections.

For Stupid Cupid, this would have saved us considerable time going back and forth with our VFX artist. And because it would have made our workflow more efficient, PRODUCER would have allowed us extra corrections for our sound design thanks to a better use of our time and budget.

As for delivery, PRODUCER lets you upload your contracts and delivery assets into its cloud storage. From here, you can access what you need and send your final renders or Digital Cinema Packages to festivals or clients.

For our project, we had several contracts with musical artists and festival-bound DCPs. I wouldn’t be able to tell you if you asked me where any of that stuff is now.

With PRODUCER, I could send you a link to everything in under a minute.

PRODUCER Gives Your Film A Home

While we managed to finish Stupid Cupid, it was a struggle filled with inefficiency.

If we had PRODUCER as part of our toolkit, I know we would have finished ahead of schedule and under budget. There was a moment there when the project wouldn’t have been finished at all if it wasn’t for our obsession with telling the story.

PRODUCER would not only have guaranteed our success but made the journey painless.

This will give you all the tools I’ve just covered for one project. If you have multiple productions in the works, PRODUCER can scale to your needs. But the fact remains, that it will save you time and money, which are two things that will make or break your project.

PRODUCER is a great application that I will be using on my upcoming short film, so I’ll be back to tell you how much of my workflow has changed. Until that film is off the ground, I’ll be in my garage building a time machine so I can go back to 2019.

City National Bank has shuffled its top leadership team, recruiting banking veteran Howard Hammond as CEO while Kelly Coffey shifts to a new role as CEO of City National Entertainment.

The transition, effective Nov. 27, was prompted in part by City National’s desire to focus more deeply on its entertainment client base across TV, film, music, theater, touring and related sectors. Coffey, who is based in Beverly Hills, has served as City National CEO since 2019, having joined the company from JPMorgan’s private wealth management division.

“For me, banking has always been about clients — the people, businesses and nonprofit organizations we support,” Coffey said. “The entertainment industry is incredibly dynamic, and City National’s role in supporting this community is more important than ever as we remain at the forefront of industry developments and hone our services to meet the evolving needs of our clients. I’m excited about the opportunity to work more closely with clients and help City National serve them even better.”

JaHan Wang, City National’s executive VP of entertainment banking, continues to report to Kelly. Martha Henderson, another CNB veteran, remains vice chairman of entertainment banking.

Hammond joins CNB from Fifth Third Bancorp, where he was most recently executive VP and head of consumer banking. He reports to Greg Carmichael, City National Bank executive chair.

“Kelly has had a tremendous impact on City National over the last five years. Her client focus has ensured that client-centricity has remained a hallmark of the bank’s culture and that it remains a differentiator for the bank,” Carmichael said. “Her new role will build on City National’s 70-year legacy of supporting the entertainment community and allow her to focus her significant talents on helping our entertainment clients thrive.”

Hammond will also join CNB’s board of directors and sit on the executive committee of RBC’s U.S. holding company.

“City National has an incredible reputation for putting its clients, colleagues and communities first,” said Hammond. “I look forward to working closely with Greg, Kelly and the rest of the leadership team to build on the strength of City National and lead the business into the future.”

UPDATED at 2:14 p.m.: SAG-AFTRA has just announced that today’s press conference has been pushed back and will take place at 3 p.m.

PREVIOUSLY: In a full-circle moment, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher is holding a press conference at 2 p.m. today in the James Cagney Boardroom of the guild’s Wilshire Boulevard headquarters, the same place that she fired up the troops with her strike-launching speech on July 13.

She’s being joined by National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and members of the TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee to reveal the results of this morning’s National Board Vote on the tentative agreement reached Wednesday with the studios and to review details of the agreement.

One procedural note: While the board will very likely approve the pact and the strike was declared over as of 12:01 a.m. PT on Thursday, the agreement will still need to be ratified by a vote from SAG’s full membership in the coming weeks.

You can watch the press conference in the player below.

Here’s what we know so far about the agreement, based on the guild’s announcement on Wednesday:

“In a contract valued at over one billion dollars, we have achieved a deal of extraordinary scope that includes ‘”‘above-pattern’”‘ minimum compensation increases, unprecedented provisions for consent and compensation that will protect members from the threat of AI, and for the first time establishes a streaming participation bonus. Our Pension & Health caps have been substantially raised, which will bring much needed value to our plans. In addition, the deal includes numerous improvements for multiple categories including outsize compensation increases for background performers, and critical contract provisions protecting diverse communities.”

The AMPTP issued the following statement on Wednesday:

“This tentative agreement represents a new paradigm. It gives SAG-AFTRA the biggest contract-on-contract gains in the history of the union, including the largest increase in minimum wages in the last forty years; a brand new residual for streaming programs; extensive consent and compensation protections in the use of artificial intelligence; and sizable contract increases on items across the board.”

Bodybuilding is a sport that I was never personally interested in, but I could see the appeal to others. These muscle-bound, hyper-focused people look like they could be real-life superheroes. Arnold Schwarzenegger is obviously the biggest success story from that world, and he’s featured prominently (in archival footage mainly from his own event) in filmmaker Frank Zarrillo’s documentary Gaspari. Bodybuilding icon from New Jersey Rich Gaspari is the film’s subject, who is the winner of the inaugural Arnold Classic in 1989.

There should be a drinking game for this movie anytime someone mentions the word “legend” in reference to Gaspari. The film shows footage from his competitive heyday in the 80s and early 90s, cut in between following him and other bodybuilders, mostly at the Arnold Classic. Late-night infomercials were another fixture in the 80s and 90s, and this documentary has that kind of feel. There could be another drinking game for all of the product placement going on here, but that could prove to be a deadly amount of consumption.

At just under two hours runtime, the movie is too long for what it is and repeats itself, but there are some interesting aspects, such as when the Arnold Classic show still went on during the pandemic but without its 200,000 attendees. How did bodybuilding reach Comic Con-like levels of fans attending? That’s an interesting question for another documentary. Also fascinating is how focused these athletes have to be to reach the pinnacle of the sport and how Rich is still that way today with his business life.

“…Bodybuilding icon from New Jersey…”

I’m not a bodybuilding fan, but I’m no stranger to that world. My dad was featured in some of the same fitness magazines that Gaspari graced the cover of over seventy times during his career. They both have supplement lines that have become their obsession post-sport and have gone through ups and downs in both business and life (but who hasn’t?). The burning desire for success is something that I see in them both. Athletes like former American Gladiator/Mr. Universe, Mike O’Hearn speaks glowingly about how Rich Gaspari influenced themselves and many others just by looking at his pictures in a magazine.

The majority of the film is spent on Gaspari employees and Gaspari himself talking about his accomplishments, business, and career. Gaspari is more for diehard fans, such as the super fan in the movie who follows him around, buying all his merchandise, rather than the casual onlookers such as myself. The movie briefly mentions his personal struggles and focuses a bit longer on his bankruptcy, but I would have enjoyed a rawer look at both the man and the sport. Something like Pumping Iron so many years ago with Arnold did so and was also a big inspiration for so many of these guys.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster is another excellent documentary that comes to mind, delving into the sport’s perils. Gaspari won’t blow your mind like Rich’s body definition back in the day, but it does give a surface-level look at a boy in Jersey who came from immigrant parents to grow up and fulfill the American dream.

After years of secrecy, the B-21 Raider emerged from its Palmdale hangar Friday morning and took its first flight, soaring through the sky and giving plane enthusiasts, contractor employees and the public its first glimpse of the futuristic-looking bomber in air.

The B-21 bomber, which is being built by Northrop Grumman Corp., took off from the secretive Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale before heading north toward Edwards Air Force Base, said Matt Hartman, a photographer who was out in Palmdale in hopes of taking photos of the plane after he’d heard rumors that a flight might be imminent.

About 80 people crowded near the Palmdale Regional Airport to try to see the first flight with their own eyes. Once the bomber flew by, “you could hear a pin drop,” Hartman said.

The U.S. Air Force confirmed that the B-21 is in flight testing, and called it a “critical step” in the bomber’s test program. Flight testing includes not just flying operations but also ground and taxiing tests. Edwards Air Force Base is in charge of testing and evaluation for the B-21.

The flight test program “moves us another step closer to reaching operational capability,” Northrop Grumman said in a statement Friday. In December, Northrop Grumman unveiled the B-21 bomber for the first time, although that reveal only showcased the front of the aircraft. Technical details of the plane have so far been highly classified.

The Air Force plans to buy at least 100 B-21 stealth bombers by the mid-2030s for about $80 billion. Already, six B-21 bombers are in production, the Air Force said. The new planes will eventually replace the aging B-1 and B-2 bomber fleets.

Although the B-21’s flying-wing shape looks similar to that of the B-2, it has improved stealth technology and will be more supportable and maintainable than its predecessor, which has notoriously high maintenance costs.

The bomber is designed to fly both crewed and uncrewed missions, reflecting technological updates that were not available when the B-2 was built in the 1980s.

The Air Force plans to get its first few B-21 bombers, which are designed to fly long-range missions while evading radar detection, by the mid-2020s. The bomber is part of the U.S. military’s effort to update its nuclear triad, which includes warheads, submarines and missiles, as global rivals such as China also improve their weapons technology.

The program has boosted aerospace employment in the Antelope Valley, long known for its aerospace manufacturing jobs. In December, more than 7,000 people were employed at Northrop Grumman’s Antelope Valley facilities, which is double the number there in 2015 when the company won the bomber contract.

The B-21 Raider stealth bomber is unveiled at Northrop Grumman, Dec. 2, 2022, in Palmdale, Calif. The B-21 Raider has taken its first flight, moving the futuristic warplane closer to becoming the nation’s next nuclear weapons stealth bomber.

Hours after news broke that Travis Kelce touched down in Argentina to support Taylor Swift at her Friday show in Argentina, the singer took to Instagram Stories to announce she was cancelling the concert due to weather concerns. “I love a rain show but I’m never going to endanger my fans or my fellow performers and crew,” she wrote in the statement. However, she added, there’s good news! She gets to stay in the country a day longer.

“We’ve rescheduled tonight’s Buenos Aires show for Sunday due to the weather being so truly chaotic it would be unsafe to try and put on this concert,” she continued. “Good news is I get to stay in Argentina longer!!”

Earlier in the day, Travis had been photographed arriving in Argentina in order to support the international leg of his new girlfriend’s Eras Tour. Fans were anticipating seeing the NFL star in the audience amid their blooming romance.

This would have been the Kansas City Chiefs tight end’s second trip to the Eras Tour — he previously admitted he’d seen the big show in his hometown, where he had attempted to give Taylor his phone number on a friendship bracelet. “I was a little butthurt that I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her,” he said during a July episode of his podcast, New Heights.

“I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it,” he admitted, adding that he did take it personally. “She doesn’t meet anybody or at least she didn’t want to meet me so I took it personal,” he said. Still, the misunderstanding didn’t seem to stop the duo from connecting.

A report emerged in September that they were hanging out on the DL. “Travis has been into Taylor for a while and definitely has a crush on her,” Entertainment Tonight reported. “He is a simple guy that is very funny, charismatic, chill, and loves playing football.”

The Messenger reported around the same time that the couple had been “quietly hanging out.” “She saw him when she was in NYC a few weeks ago,” a source for the outlet claimed.

Taylor previously supported her new boyfriend during several high-profile appearances at Kansas City Chiefs games.

“The Buccaneers” might look like “Bridgerton” at first glance, but the two are very different, and the music and soundtrack heavily differentiate the shows, in addition to their plots.

Adapted from Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel, the Apple TV+ drama tells the story of five young American girls who clash with stuffy English society when they enter the marriage market in search of husbands. Nan St. George operates as the central character, and she doesn’t exactly have love or marriage on her radar, but of course she eventually finds herself in a love triangle situation between Guy Thwarte (Matthew broome) and Theo (Guy Remmers). Nan’s sister Jinny St. George more actively seeks out a husband, while their friend Conchitta Closson (Alisha Boe) gets married in the first episode. The Elmsworth sisters Lizzy (TK) and (Josie Totah) also navigate the mix in their own ways.

Music supervisor Matt Biffa, producer Stella Mozgawa (who plays in the featured band Warpaint) and series composers Anna Phoebe and Aisling Brouer, together known as AVAWAVES, explained musical curation decisions behind individual moments in the show as well as the broader sound and score.

How did you arrive at the penning introduction song that plays at the beginning of each episode?

Matt Biffa: It is an anomaly though, in terms of the overall musical concept of the show, which was originally to try and create something that was as different from “Bridgeton” as it could possibly be. That was what they came to me asking, and so I went away for a few days and then I came up with this idea, and then I idiotically pitched it to everybody, for basically no cover versions. No licensing of original songs, nothing. Basically, only new songs written specifically for the show, as a love letter to the entire history of American music from the blues to the present day to reflect the clash between cultures and the American invasion. They said, ‘That sounds awesome. Go away and make it happen’. Which is when I was like, ‘Oh, golly, what have I done to my life?’ I was a massive fan of Stella principally as a musician. And I felt that in order to do this ridiculously ambitious thing justice, we needed a great musician who could also produce who was also female as well. Warpaint are an inherently LA band. So, the fact that Stella is Australian, I felt I could kind of bend that a little.”

Stella Mozgawa: We had a long period of testing different songs for the opening scene, which is where the main character Nan, walks into the universe of “The Buccaneers.” We tried a million different options that were tied to a million different concepts that we were still trying to figure out. There was this real kind of Trojan horse let’s say, of the whole show — once we get that one in the door, then we’re good. And as we were testing out a lot of different songs. My engineer and myself, my engineer on Omar Yakar 9/0. We were putting up a lot of LCD Soundsystem songs. In the process, we played “North American Scum” against the scene, and the lyrics felt like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s so funny and cheeky and appropriate to the entire concept of the show.’ We pitched it as a cover maybe for the show, which thankfully it felt like we could maybe break the rules a little bit for the main title. I felt like that song, particularly with some female voices, could really work for the general story and the overarching theme of the show and the American culture clash as Matt’s said. It just felt like a real wink to the audience.

How did you choose the Taylor Swift song “Nothing New” in the first episode?

Biffa: Having been told to go away and make this happen, I thought, ‘I’m gonna start as big as I can get’ and I went straight to Austin Swift to start talking about the show and whether Taylor could be involved in some way, and we had many different discussions. On the side, I was basically listening to all her repertoire. One afternoon, I’m out walking the dog I’m just listening and ‘Nothing New’ popped on. I’d specifically been thinking about that that scene at the debutante ball where the debs are coming down the stairs because that, for the longest time was score, and I just immediately had that thing where it’s like, ‘Oh my God, that that could be perfect.’ I kind of went home, crudely tried it to picture and I rang up Beth, the producer and said, ‘I have something controversial to try’ and she sort of like sounded slightly panicked, but said ‘Well, okay.’ So I spoke to our music editor. I you know, we laid it up, we sent it to them. Katherine Jakeways, our showrunner burst into tears. We wanted our audience to feel really seen.”

How would you describe the tone you’re trying to establish with the music?

Aisling Brouer: We went through many different experimentation phases trying to find the sound of the show. We were lucky enough to have some time at the beginning of the series where we could really just throw paint up the wall and see what worked and what didn’t work. In the end we ended up coming back to our sound as AVAWAVES that we’ve written over the years together. Even within our own sound, it was really important to us to find a balance between the big beautiful expanse themes, juxtaposed with really understated eerie, haunting voices because there’s so much of what these girls go through and what what the women in there are processing at any given time that we also felt it was really important that we’re not only showing this beautiful outside conception or impression of, period dramas that’s like big perfect balls and the big dresses and all these girls look so perfect and everything’s perfect and they’re all very well behaved. We were excited about showing the other side and being like ‘No, these are women like us that have hopes and dreams and want to be defiant and want to do things their own way and break rules and it made it exciting for us to be able to kind of delve into that and express that and show the rawness of emotion.

Anna Phoebe: We didn’t really know what the end point was because we hadn’t received the whole script or seen the whole series. So it felt like, musically, we were responding episode by episode and really going through this journey with the girls together. In a way that allowed a fresh response to the score because we had no end points. We had Stella creating her tracks. You have Matt in there for the music supervisor who is bringing in Taylor Swift, who is bringing incredible women performances and and well-known songs and finding not so well known songs and throwing it all into the mix. And then you had us as composers of the score, who kind of provided a threads throughout  the whole thing. Because we have these bold moments of punk and indie and pop, it gave us a chance to really sit back and and not take up that space. And not feel we have to push our sound when it when it wasn’t necessary. But then the moments when you have these big scenes and the ball and the wedding and you have cliffs, we were able to really go full dial up to 11 with the melodies and the strings and and the vocals and have these big epic l cinematic moments. It really gave us quite an open remit because the other tracks that Stella was bringing were so bold. It allowed us to be this bridge between the classical world and this modern, present day world.

Guy Remmers and Matthew Broome as Theo and Guy Thwarte in “The Buccaneers” (Apple TV+)

Was there a certain sound that you built up as the love triangle progresses?

Phoebe: As the series goes on, and the girls get bolder, they become emboldened and they’re faced with the intricacies of love triangles and having to make choices and facing trauma as well. What we wanted to do with with that is reflect that in the score, so we had three orchestral sessions, and we play a lot of the instruments on the score, but then for the biggest of string sections, and obviously Imogen’s vocals, we had these sessions, and by the third session, it was like, ‘We don’t need all those high strings. It’s about the grit and it’s the low end. So as the score progresses, you get less melodic, it becomes less. It’s like stripping all of these frills away as we get to know the girls.

Brouer: It also has to be said, some of the performances in this show are absolutely incredible and there’s nothing to add. We really tried to find a balance where we’re not overscoring the show or trying to make the audience feel a certain way because the performers are so strong. Sometimes less is more.

Phoebe: In period dramas I think the score can be quite didactic in telling you how you’re meant to feel, and in a weird way, it shuts off the emotion from the viewer and what’s going on. It comes between the experiences of empathy or empathizing with that character. And there’s a couple of scenes, without giving anything away, where you see a woman and she’s crumbled and she’s alone and she’s vulnerable and we don’t need anything to come between us. I think those moments of not scoring — and those were bold choices by the directors and the producers also to say we don’t want any music here — it shows the trust in the actors, the trust in the cinematography.

Keke Palmer was temporarily granted sole physical and legal custody of her eight-month-old son, Leodis, on Friday after filing a restraining order Thursday against partner Darius Jackson, citing domestic abuse.

The Los Angeles County judge granted a temporary restraining order in response to the emergency filing, stipulating that Jackson must stay at least 100 yards away from Palmer and their son as well as his schooling and childcare. According to People, the order also stated that Jackson is not allowed to have visitation with his son. A hearing has been set for Dec. 5 to assess further action after the temporary arrangement.

In the paperwork, Palmer said she ended her relationship with Jackson in early October “primarily due to the physical and emotional abuse [he] inflicted.”

Jackson tweeted a photo of him holding Leodis on X Thursday night, captioned “I love you, son. See you soon.”

The “Nope” actress sought the protective measure after an alleged incident on Nov. 5 when Jackson “trespassed into my home without my knowledge or consent.” He also allegedly “threatened” Palmer, who claimed he began “lunging for my neck, striking me, throwing me over the couch and stealing my phone.” Palmer said she had security footage of the encounter.

Palmer also listed other violent behavior that Jackson allegedly participated in like “destroying my personal property, including diaries and prescription eyeglasses, throwing my belongings into the street, throwing my car keys to prevent me from driving away, hitting [me] in front of our son, spewing profanities about me to our son, threatening to kill himself with a gun if I left him, harassment and other physical and emotional abuse.”

In July, Jackson criticized Palmer for wearing a black bodysuit under a partially sheer dress to an Usher Las Vegas Residency concert. The backlash against him was swift, and he later deleted his social media accounts, but not before defending himself.

“We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn’t want the wife and mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others and he gets told how much of a hater he is. This is my family and my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe. I rest my case.”

Martin Scorsese‘s daughter Francesca has become a viral TikTok star over the last few months thanks to her humorous videos featuring her Oscar-winning father. One such video, titled “The Muse,” garnered a lot of attention in October after it earned a response from “Avengers” co-director Joe Russo. In Francesca’s TikTok, Martin Scorsese playfully gives directing notes to her dog, Oscar. Russo responded with his own video in which he jokingly calls his dog “Box Office.”

While Russo was being playful, his video rubbed many people the wrong way as it came off as Russo gloating about his Marvel grosses at a time when Scorsese’s latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” wasn’t exactly setting the box office on fire. Scorsese infamously spoke out against Marvel movies several years ago, criticizing them for putting a stronghold on film exhibition and forcing mid-budget movies and more adult-oriented fare out of the mainstream marketplace.

In a new interview with GQ, Francesca said she had not yet seen Russo’s divisive response to her beloved “The Muse.” Francesca herself is familiar with trolling her dad over his infamous Marvel comments. One of her first viral social media moments was when she wrapped Christmas gifts for her father in Marvel wrapping paper. It earned a huge response online, which Francesca never saw coming.

“I don’t want to offend anybody or anything,” Francesca told GQ about the Marvel debate. “I do very much stand with my dad, but I did educate myself. Originally, when I was agreeing with him, I’d never seen a single Marvel film. And then during COVID, I finished all of them, but I still stand by it. I will say some of them are fun.”

“People keep telling me to get him a Marvel cake,” she added. “I’m like, ‘He might kill me.’”

Scorsese first shared his Marvel criticisms in an October 2019 interview with Empire magazine while promoting “The Irishman.”

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese said at the time. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Scorsese later published an op-ed essay in The New York Times in which he wrote that cinema is about “revelation, aesthetic, characters — the complexity of people and their contradictory and sometimes paradoxical natures, the way they can hurt one another and love one another and suddenly come face to face with themselves.”

That is all absent in Marvel movies, he wrote, adding that while “many of the elements that define cinema as I know it are there in Marvel pictures,” ultimately “what’s not there is revelation, mystery or genuine emotional danger. Nothing is at risk. The pictures are made to satisfy a specific set of demands, and they are designed as variations on a finite number of themes.”

Miranda Lambert and Jon Randall have jointly launched a new imprint called Big Loud Texas in partnership with Big Loud Records. Both Grammy winners will be directly involved in signing and developing artists on the roster but Randall will additionally serve as president of A&R for Big Loud Texas.

“As a teenager chasing my dreams in the honky-tonks of Texas, Nashville seemed so far away,” said Lambert. “Every time I’m back home I get to hear the incredible talent our state produces, and I feel a responsibility to help get more of those Texas voices heard. I’m really excited to team up with my buddy Jon Randall and Big Loud to do just that. Get ready, y’all – we’re bringing even more Texas to town!”

Big Loud Texas will serve as a dedicated imprint of Big Loud Records, a label home to Morgan Wallen, Lauren Alaina, Hardy, Ernest, Hailey Whitters and MacKenzie Porter, among many others. Though she is not explicitly signed to the imprint, Lambert joins the new venture after leaving Sony Music Nashville, the company she had been with since the beginning of her almost two-decade recording career.

Lambert and Randall notably collaborated on 2021’s “The Marfa Tapes,” which had both artists collaborating with Jack Ingram. Randall also served as a producer alongside Lambert and Luke Dick on her 2022 album, “Palomino.”

“When I was a kid playing in bands and kicking around Texas, I knew that making music was all I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” notes Randall. “Since then, I’ve gotten to play with so many of my heroes produce legends and friends and travel all over the world… but all those roads lead right back home. I feel very blessed to share this full circle moment with one of my best pals, Miranda Lambert, and help some other dreamers chase their song around the world.”

“I’ve admired what Miranda and Jon have done – both as musicians and as champions of young talent – for many years, so it’s an honor to join forces in this way,” added Big Loud CEO and Partner, Seth England. “One of the most important things to us at Big Loud is to align with cultural camaraderie. The Witcher’s Anya Cholatra reportedly joined the cast of the upcoming DCU project Creature Commandos, playing a villain associated with Wonder Woman.

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU will essentially serve as a DC reboot across films, series, animation, and gaming as those mediums coalesce to tell an interconnected narrative.

The first DCU project to hit screens on Max is Creature Commandos, an animated show centering on a unique squad of monstrous characters. Gunn has written all seven episodes, and the cast has been selected in such a way that many of them could potentially make the jump to live-action.

DCU’s Creature Commandos Casts Circe

DC Comics

Actress Anya Chalotra has been cast as the villain Circe in Creature Commandos, according to user bestofanyac on X.

This was corroborated by homeofdcu, who posted an image of Chalotra’s casting resume which indicated that she did voiceover work for the James Gunn DCU series.

Who Is Circe in the DC Universe?

Fans now know who will be playing Circe in the DCU, but they might not be aware of who she is or how she connects to Wonder Woman and her mythos.

Circe (not to be confused with Marvel’s Sersi) is based on the Circe from ancient Greek mythology. The character made her first DC Comics appearance in 1949, and much like her mythological counterpart, she’s depicted as a beautiful, immortal sorceress.

And although she’s butted heads with the likes of Superman, Supergirl, and others, her true role is that of a nemesis to Wonder Woman. Circe is presently seen as a major antagonist to Diana and has even been featured in other Wonder Woman-related media, such as Justice League Unlimited.

Her inclusion in Creature Commandos, a decidedly non-Wonder Woman-focused property, might seem a bit out of place, but it makes sense when one considers the other supernatural characters that make up the show’s main cast.

And since James Gunn might have plans on having Anya Cholatra play Circe in live-action DCU projects, it’s not too much of a leap to guess that she might have a role in Paradise Lost, a live-action series that will tell a story set on Wonder Woman’s home of Themyscira.

Cholatra joins a cast of other notable names in the DCU, such as David Harbour, Rachel Brosnahan, and Viola Davis.

DC Studios’ Creature Commandos doesn’t have an official release date yet, James Gunn recently confirmed it’s set to hit Max in 2024.

Taylor Swift has postponed tonight’s Eras Tour concert in Buenos Aires due to what she called “truly chaotic” weather, a description that might also apply to the media frenzy with the arrival in Argentina last night of Travis Kelce.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end reportedly arrived in Buenes Aires on Thursday, fueling speculation that he’d be attending either tonight’s now-canceled show or, more likely, the Saturday night show.

The canceled Friday show at Estadio River Plate Stadium has been rescheduled for Sunday night.

Next up for Swift are three shows in Rio de Janeiro next weekend, then São Paulo, Tokyo, Australia, Singapore, France, Sweden and more. See the full itinerary here.

“I love a rain show but I’m never going to endanger my fans or my fellow performers and crew,” Swift wrote today in an Instagram Story post. “We’ve rescheduled tonight’s Buenos Aires show for Sunday due to the weather being so truly chaotic it would be unsafe to try and put on this concert. Good news is I get to stay in Argentina longer!!”

Weather forecasts indicate that Buenos Aires could get up to 2 inches of rain tonight, with winds of 40 mph.

Swift’s Thursday show in in Buenos Aires last night included the songs “The Very First Night” and “Labyrinth” as the night’s surprise songs. The latter number in particular, with its lyric “Oh no, I’m falling in love again” adding to the frenzied speculation about Kelce’s imminent arrival.

The actors and writers strikes are finally over, but the jilted team behind the shelved Coyote Vs. Acme isn’t pulling any punches against the studio that crushed their work under an anvil for a measly tax write-off. As reported yesterday, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to give the completed, scored, and audience-tested film the Batgirl treatment and yank it off its slate entirely, despite the fact that it was originally supposed to open earlier this year. (It got bumped for Barbie before getting bumped entirely.)

Despite this massive setback, the team behind the John Cena-led film is embodying, to quote director Dave Green, “resilience and persistence… in the spirit of Wile E. Coyote.” While the video has now been blocked for copyright infringement in an especially cruel twist from WBD, someone on the crew leaked a behind-the-scenes reel of footage we’ll now never see onscreen. The clip contained exactly as many things being blown up and knocked down as you’d expect from a live-action Looney Tunes movie, in addition to just seeming like a whole lot of fun. It’s no wonder the lucky few who did get to see it loved it so much.

The studio’s bizarre decision also cost them and the world this incredible composition by composer Steven Price, who thankfully shared a short clip on X/Twitter. Yes, this is a full choir singing the words “meep meep” over a Tchaikovsky symphony, and yes you should watch it immediately before it gets wiped from the internet like everything else. In the responses to his post, Price also called these “grim times” and said, “this is a weird one, for sure! Good film, scrubbed from existence…”

Other team members also deftly removed WBD’s anvil from their heads with their own barbs. Voice actor Eric Bauza commented, “Here’s a crazy thought… WB Discovery might have a better shot at capturing a younger audience if they stopped shelving/canning all of their kids movies & animated series for tax dollars?! I could be wrong,” before replying to his post, “Not everything can be ‘Shark Week.’” Later, he also shared a video comparing WBD to the terrifying Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Script-contributor Zack Bornstein also commented, writing, “I was lucky to help write on this. [Dave Green] spent years directing a hilarious heartwarming film that tested well with every audience. If great stories with beloved characters and A-list stars are getting shelved for tax write offs, why are studios even in the movie business.”

But perhaps the most upsetting response came from John Cena himself, who posted a caption-less screenshot of Looney Tunes’ “The End” card on Instagram. Over time, we’ll see how much really ended as a result of this decision.

Share Tweet Share Share Email Another fun conversation today with the women

On May 31, Florencia Romeo slept in a tent outside Argentina’s largest stadium with her girlfriend and her sister. They had heard rumors that Taylor Swift might be coming to Buenos Aires, and they wanted to be first in line.

The rumors were right: Ms. Swift was coming, but it would take a while. Her concert was more than five months away.

The tent stayed anyway, occupied by a rotating cast of 30 die-hard Swifties who worked together over 163 days to hold their spots in line for a chance to get as close as possible to their idol when she walked onstage Thursday in the first stop of her Eras Tour outside North America.

“We have been waiting for this for many years,” said Ms. Romeo, 23, who quit her job as a cashier partly to dedicate herself to waiting in line. “We didn’t expect her to come, and then she did. So it was obvious that we had to do what we had to do.”

Ms. Swift’s Eras Tour officially went global on Thursday when the pop megastar began a new phase of shows that would take her to 25 cities across South America, Asia, Australia and Europe over the next 10 months.

Since March, the North American stretch of the tour has become an economic marvel and a cultural force, cementing Ms. Swift’s status as one of the most influential, and beloved, people on the continent. Now, she is set to demonstrate that her fame and adoration go well beyond borders.

There are few countries better to display the intense passion of her fans than Argentina. While Ms. Swift has become a certified global icon, Argentina has become known for worshiping icons with religious fervor.

Consider that Juan and Eva Perón became Argentina’s president and first lady in 1946 but are still lionized in political chants, are displayed in portraits in many Argentine homes and are the inspiration for a namesake political movement that still runs the country. Diego Maradona, the soccer star, became seen as such a deity here that tens of thousands of Argentines belong to the, yes, Church of Maradona, a legally recognized religion in its 25th year. And after Lionel Messi and the national soccer team won the World Cup last year, the crush of four million adoring fans during the victory parade forced the players to abandon their buses and fly over in a helicopter instead.

“She’s like the female Messi,” said Ms. Romeo, offering Ms. Swift about the highest praise an Argentine could nowadays. Some fans in Buenos Aires this week wore jerseys of the national soccer team with “SWIFT” on the back, while others passed out a sort of prayer card with Ms. Swift’s head superimposed over Jesus Christ’s.

So it was no surprise that Ms. Swift’s arrival in Argentina became a national event. It received intense news coverage; Buenos Aires named her an official guest of honor; and she even became a figure in next week’s presidential election after some of her fans organized against the far-right candidate, Javier Milei. Meteorologists even described forecasts for sun or rain this weekend as “dry Swifties” or “wet Swifties.” (Friday called for “wet Swifties,” so organizers rescheduled that show for Sunday.)

“Everyone in the country knows her, and everyone knows about this show,” said Renata Schyfys, 15, wearing halfway up her forearms at the show on Thursday the friendship bracelets that have become a badge of Swiftie fandom.

In a country of 46 million people, Ms. Swift sold roughly 200,000 tickets across three sold-out shows, and yet the waiting list still had more than 2.8 million people — enough to fill Argentina’s biggest soccer arena, El Monumental, another 40 times.

That stadium was shaking on Thursday night with near-constant, ear-piercing screams coming from the more than 70,000 fans there who repeatedly chanted, “Olé, olé, olé, olé, Taylor, Taylor.”

Even Ms. Swift, who has seen her share of huge crowds, seemed taken aback. “I am looking out to possibly what might be one of the most epic crowds to ever exist,” she told the audience. “This is on another level.”

Later, she removed her earpieces and motioned that she was struggling to hear over the roar of the crowd. She paused for a full two minutes, soaking in her fans’ adoration.

“I don’t know how to thank you enough for the way you’re treating me tonight,” she said. “I love you so, so much, and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to come see you.”

The show on Thursday was Ms. Swift’s first major concert in South America, the first of nine this month in Argentina and Brazil. After waiting for so long, many Swifties on Thursday said they had made a sort of pilgrimage, many from across the continent.

Nahuel Ochoa, a medical student wearing a homemade bedazzled jumpsuit and a glittery jacket, had taken a bus with 50 other fans from the city of San Luis, 12 hours away. Unable to get a room in Buenos Aires, where hotels were nearly sold out, he was planning to take the bus back after the show — and then return on Saturday to see Ms. Swift again.

“We have loved Taylor since we were 10 years old — we have been waiting 13 years,” Mr. Ochoa, 23, said, sitting alongside his childhood friend Andrea Garro. “Her songs reflect the majority of what we go through. It’s a form of expressing ourselves in a way that we can’t.”

Ms. Garro, 23, a law student, added that Ms. Swift’s music helped her get past a deep depression. “We feel seen,” she said.

But there was no show of devotion greater than the more than 100 fans who camped out in shifts outside the stadium for months. After Ms. Romeo and her friends staked out their spot and attracted local news attention, other tents followed.

The group of mostly young women set up shifts using a spreadsheet, with ideally at least two people present at the tent at all times. The 30 members of Ms. Romeo’s tent had to spend a minimum of 40 hours there a month, with each member spending about 10 to 12 nights at the tent on average. After spending the first few days sleeping with just blankets, they added a mattress.

“She has the best relationship with her fans and is the one that can achieve this sort of mania,” said Lucas Forte, 24, a member of another tent who had slept outside the stadium for five nights since September. “No one camped out for the Weeknd, for example.”

Ms. Swift herself was impressed with the effort. “I heard you guys were camping out to get good spots?” she asked the crowd on Thursday. “I actually didn’t believe it until I saw a video.”

The fans camping out were not holding a place to get tickets to the show. Those were all sold online. Rather, the tents were set up so they could be first in line when the doors to the show opened and the fans could sprint to the guardrails along the stage for a closer view.

Event organizers helped make sure the fans who had camped out were first in line — yet many still ended up behind rows of people because the doors opened an hour earlier for fans who had paid more for “V.I.P.” tickets.

But some campers eventually reached the barricade along the stage.

“I smashed my knee trying to get there,” said Atenas Astuni, 23, a member of the first-in-line tent, her voice hoarse the Friday morning after the show. “But if I had to smash my knee again to repeat exactly what happened yesterday, I would do it without hesitation.”

“Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, are once again teaming up to host another game show together. The son-and-mother duo have been announced as the new hosts of Fox’s upcoming music gamer “We Are Family,” which premieres Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Anderson and Bowman replace Jamie Foxx and his daughter Corinne Foxx, who had previously been announced for “We Are Family.” Jamie Foxx continues as an executive producer on “We Are Family,” as he presumably recovers from a medical condition that he was hospitalized for earlier this year. Jamie Foxx also hosts another music game show, “Beat Shazam,” for Fox (with Corinne Foxx as the show’s DJ), but Nick Cannon filled in as host, and Kelly Osbourne guested as DJ, for episodes that aired this summer.

Anderson and Bowman — also known as “Mama Doris” — have worked together on several projects, including the gamer “To Tell the Truth,” as well as “Trippin’ with Anthony Anderson and Mama Doris.” According to Fox, the new show “will showcase non-famous relatives of celebrities performing amazing solo performances and duets with their hidden famous family member.”

The show, from Jeff Apploff’s Apploff Entertainment and Fox Alternative Entertainment, follows a studio audience of 100 contestants who are competing for up to $150,000 by guessing which celebrity the performer is related to. Celebrities appearing on “We Are Family” include musicians and pro athletes, Fox said.

“We’re so excited to have Anthony and Doris headline We Are Family,” said Fox unscripted programming prexy Allison Wallach. “They embody everything that’s special about this show –a ton of laughs, a lot of heart and some friendly on the edge-of-your-seat competition that the whole family can enjoy.”

“We Are Family” is co-produced by Apploff Entertainment and Fox Alternative Entertainment, which created the program. Jeff Apploff, Joni Day and Jamie Foxx are executive producers, while “We Are Family” showrunner Matilda Zoltowski is also executive producer of the series.

“I jumped at the opportunity to host ‘We Are Family’ and can’t wait for you to see all the celebrities, their relatives and the many surprises we have in store this season – and with my mama by my side, you never know what’s going to happen,” said Anderson in a statement.

Here’s a first look at “We Are Family”:

Those who’ve served for Canada are being honoured this weekend through a number of events across Hamilton and Niagara Region.

There is no shortage of Remembrance Day ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday, including events at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and Hamilton Military Museum.

Maj. Chris Wattie, a deputy commanding officer with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, which was established in 1862, says he will be reflecting on the more than 67,000 Canadians who lost their lives in two world wars and the thousands in other overseas operations.

Wattie says Remembrance Day is much more than honouring our war dead, but those who made a “tremendous amount of sacrifice” in the many conflicts.

“But there are many current people … serving in the armed forces to keep us safe,” he said.

“I think that we shouldn’t lose sight of that on this Remembrance Day.”

Canadian History Ehx podcast host Craig Baird says one of the series of sacrifices that stands out for him is the two-day Battle of Kapyong where some 700 Canadians helped defend a hill in the Korean War against 5,000 soldiers.

“We had about 500 who didn’t make it home,” said Baird.

“This very important battle with the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry in 1951, was at Hill 677 and actually involved essentially Canadians holding off the Chinese and protecting this hill and protecting Seoul, Korea from being overrun.”

Taylor Swift shocked fans with a last-minute Buenos Aires Eras Tour cancellation — something truly unprecedented for the singer.

“I love a rain show but I’m never going to endanger my fans or my fellow performer and crew,” Swift, 33, shared via Instagram on Friday, November 10. “We’ve rescheduled tonight’s Buenos Aires show for Sunday due to the weather being so truly chaotic it would be unsafe to try and put on this concert.”

Swift, trying to make lemonade out of lemons, noted that the “good news” is she’ll “get to stay in Argentina longer.”

Friday night’s show was set to be the second of her South American tour dates as Swift was scheduled to perform at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires from Thursday, November 9 to Saturday, November 11. The Friday night cancellation means that Swift will end her three-night run on Sunday, November 12.

Nashville s VIP Scene What Are Kacey Musgraves Taylor Swift More Celebs Go-To Spots in Music City 307

Related: Where Do Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift More Celebs Eat, Drink in Nashville?

Nashville is the home of country — and celebrities including Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift and Blake Lively love the city for the music scene and its equally as-happening eateries. In this week’s “VIP Scene” episode, Us Weekly is taking you inside the heart of Music City and shining a light on the town’s celebrity-approved restaurants, […]

She’s also set to perform in Rio de Janeiro and São Paolo during the rest of November.

Swift postponed the concert came hours after a source confirmed to Us Weekly that her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, arrived in Buenos Aires. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end jetted to Argentina one day after attending his teammate Patrick Mahomes’ 15 and the Mahomies Foundation gala in Missouri.

While Swift couldn’t attend the event, she did her part. The singer donated a framed, “commemorative” platinum record with an “authentic autograph,” the Optimal Fundraising Group revealed in a Thursday Instagram post.

Things between Swift and Kelce started heating up in September after he failed to get her number when attending the Eras Tour in July. Kelce invited Swift to one of his football games and she jumped at the chance to attend. Their relationship has continued to evolve since then, with Swift being spotted at various NFL games over the past few months.

Kelce has since decided to return the favor and support Swift in South America during his bye week. (The athlete’s NFL schedule will continue on Monday, November 20, when Chiefs play the Eagles.)

“Travis and Taylor are a very real couple, they actually spend a lot of one-on-one time together and have developed a very real connection,” a separate source told Us earlier this week. “They have very detailed plans coming up on how to stay together while she’s on tour and he has games.”

Kelce first hinted at the Argentina trip during a Wednesday, November 8 episode of the “New Heights” podcast, which he hosts alongside brother Jason Kelce. Travis said planned on heading “closer to the equator” when asked about his plans for the time off.

“I might just say ‘f–k it’ and just go somewhere nice, I don’t know,” he teased at the time. “My skin’s getting real pale. I gotta go somewhere sunny.”

The Golden Globes have plenty of movies to sift through and consider for its upcoming 81st annual awards ceremony. With “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro” on the drama side and “The Color Purple” and “Poor Things” in comedy, alongside the buzzy summer double-feature “Barbenheimer,” a star-studded event is indeed awaiting viewers.

The Globes have entered a new era with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association now disbanded, with many of its problematic members expelled; the annual awards season staple has traditionally been second to the Oscars regarding TV ratings. Under new leadership, the group seeks to reclaim its glory days of fun and memorable affairs.

Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Oscars predictions in all categories.

One of the most impactful changes is the expansion of films and performances that will be recognized. According to the eligibility and rules guide, each category will nominate six nominees, an increase from five, except the new best cinematic and box office achievement category (for movies that grossed more than $150 million, with at least $100 million in the U.S.), which will name eight.

More spots mean more of an opportunity for more “Barbenheimer” actors who could use a boost, like supporting actress contenders Emily Blunt and America Ferrera.

In the drama races, movies helmed by some of cinema’s most beloved masters are likely to square off: Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer” and Martin Scorsese for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” who will also be among the favorites for best director.

The 300+ members will also have the chance to embrace timely films surrounding lost love (Celine Song’s “Past Lives”) and racial relations (Ava DuVernay’s “Origin”). The comedy landscape is more competitive than its drama counterparts, especially compared to previous years. At the top of the heap is Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar smash “Barbie,” likely to be one of the most nominated movies this year. The WB sensation seems destined to face off against Searchlight’s “Poor Things” and Focus Features’ “The Holdovers.”

Amazon MGM has a pair of dramedies that could factor into the race significantly – Ben Affleck’s Nike sneaker hit “Air” and Cord Jefferson’s TIFF Audience Award winner, “American Fiction.”

The nom expansion will also provide more runway for acting contenders trying to secure Academy love.

The lead-acting races are overflowing.

In lead drama actor, megastars like Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“Flower Moon”) and Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) will battle with notables from films that hope not to have a sole acting mention such as Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”).

Comedy actor has two frontrunners leading the charge. “American Fiction’s” Jeffrey Wright ready to take on “The Holdovers’” Paul Giamatti, a former winner of the category for “Barney’s Version.” They’ll have A-listers in the mix like Nicolas Cage “(“Dream Scenario”) and Matt Damon (“Air”).

Both actress races have talent, beauty and style that will be popular among voters. Lily Gladstone (“Flower Moon”) will take on Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) and Natalie Portman (“May December”), with possibilities for Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“Origin”) and Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”).

The chuckles felt from the likes of Margot Robbie (“Barbie”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) seem locked and loaded for attention (at least Globes-wise). Even though “The Color Purple” is one of the last contenders to drop, that shouldn’t stop Fantasia Barrino from nabbing a spot, according to early buzz.

This is all open to debate, and it’s still relatively early in the awards season. So, anything can happen.

Noteworthy: as many may know from following me on social media over the past decade, I strongly disdain ties at awards shows. Does anybody remember the three best actress (drama) winners in 1988, Jodie Foster, Shirley MacLaine and Sigourney Weaver? Well, the chances of that happening again are nearly impossible after the group inputs new measures when voting for winners.

It reads: “In the case of a tie in any category, the winner will be the one of the tied nominees on the final ballot that had the most votes on the nomination ballot. In the unlikely event that there is still a tie in any category after considering the nomination ballots, two winners will be announced.”

I’m claiming this rule just for me.

In TV, we’ll see some of the Emmy frontrunners, such as HBO’s “Succession,” Apple’s “Ted Lasso” and Netflix’s “Beef,” hold steady with multiple noms. The new shows like Disney’s “Ashoka” or Apple’s “Lessons in Chemistry” could also breakthrough with its leading stars such as Rosario Dawson and Brie Larson. There’s always room for a shock or two, so we could still see Lily Rose-Depp or Rachel Sennott crack their respective lineups for HBO’s “The Idol” despite the panned reviews.

The new category for stand-up will be very competitive, with so many notable names and specials in the running.

Chris Rock broke the seal for Netflix in the live event space with “Selective Outrage,” so he’ll likely make the cut along with some of his streaming counterparts like Tom Segura (“Sledgehammer”) and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”). It could be a category tailor-made for the streamers.

Everyone knows Eva Longoria as a TV and film actress, most notably her long run on the hit ABC series Desperate Housewives and so many other roles. But she has quietly been building up another career behind the camera as a director, having helmed numerous episodes of such shows as Black-ish, Devious Maids and Jane the Virgin. This year, she made her feature directorial debut with Searchlight/Hulu’s Flamin’ Hot, which had its premiere at SXSW and went on to acclaim and big numbers as it became the first film to simultaneously debut on both Hulu and Disney+.

Flamin’ Hot tells the inspirational true story of Richard Montanez, who went on to a successful career as a major marketing force behind Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and other products at Frito-Lay after initially starting as a janitor at one of their plants. Longoria joins me for this week’s episode of my Deadline video series Behind the Lens to talk about this significant turn in her career and why it was important not just to make this film for the Latino community, but also to make it with them, both in front of and behind the lens.

The film also features a new song, “The Fire Inside” written by Diane Warren and performed by Becky G, and Longoria shares a hilarious story of just how the prolific 14-time Oscar-nominated Warren insisted she write a song for her movie — even when the film didn’t even exist.

To watch our conversation and go “behind the lens” with Eva Longoria, watch the video above.

Join me every Friday during Oscar season for another edition of Behind the Lens.

The Marvels producer Mary Livanos put one possible fan concern to rest regarding the upcoming MCU sequel.

Captain Marvel 2 has more than a few concerns going into its opening weekend, with box office projections spelling potential disaster for the film as the MCU looks to regain its footing.

The movie is also confirmed to be a sequel to a handful of MCU projects, including its immediate predecessor, Captain Marvel, and Carol Danvers’ movie that followed that, Avengers: Endgame.

Additional titles that will influence this new film include 2021’s WandaVision featuring Monica Rambeau, 2022’s Ms. Marvel starring Kamala Khan, and 2023’s Secret Invasion centered around Nick Fury.

Captain Marvel 2 Producer on Fan Concerns

Marvel

Speaking with Collider, The Marvels producer Mary Livanos addressed potential fan concerns regarding how many projects viewers must watch before the sequel to understand what’s happening.

Livanos explained that this movie has “so many threads to pick up” for fans of both Marvel Comics and the MCU alike, teasing how many of those threads are addressed this time around:

“I think what’s great about this movie is if you are a huge fan of the comics, if you’re a huge fan of the MCU, if you’ve seen the incredible ‘Ms. Marvel’ show, if you’ve seen ‘WandaVision,’ if you saw the first ‘Captain Marvel’ movie, there is so much to follow, so many threads to pick up with this film that really pay off.”

But for those who haven’t seen those other MCU adventures, Livanos described this movie as a story “about three people really meeting for the first time and coming together,” with fans getting to “meet new characters” and learn about their stories:

“But at the end of the day, if you’re less familiar with the storytelling thus far, this is about three people really meeting for the first time and coming together. Just like any movie, you meet new characters and get to know them and get caught up to speed, and this movie does it with extreme dynamism, so I’m excited for people to enjoy it whether they’re huge fans or new fans.”

Will Fans Enjoy Captain Marvel 2’s MCU Connectivity?

With plot points connecting so prominently to so many past shows, diehard MCU fans will have their share of nods and references to the past as Captain Marvel 2 pushes Marvel Studios’ narrative further.

That connection doesn’t just apply to past projects either, as rumors pointed to this movie being one of the most important in the Multiverse Saga to set up 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Livanos even alluded to that rumor being true in a separate interview, revealing that certain plot points “definitely [lead] to plentiful opportunities for the future of the MCU” as this new saga continues to expand.

With trailers pointing to a potential reference to the X-Men in the MCU, there is no shortage of exciting story developments that could come to life from the franchise’s 33rd big-screen outing.

The Marvels will arrive in theaters on Friday, November 10.

Believe it or not, a Lamborghini is surprisingly affordable. You just can’t drive it, it has no engine, and you won’t need a lot of garage space for it because it’s the size of a matchbox. That’s right, this deal is focused on the lovely diecast cars offered by Hot Wheels, and for Forza fans, this special is not to be missed. Normally $38, this is now on sale for $25 for Black Friday and makes for a fun quick gift for any petrolhead in your social circle.

This is a limited-edition Amazon-exclusive box set from Hot Wheels that celebrates Microsoft’s Forza franchise with five premium cars. Inside this collection, you’ll get tiny but very detailed replicas of the Nissan Silvia S15, Morris Mini, Porsche 911 GT3RS, Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera, and Porsche Speedster. These are 1:64 scale toy cars with real rubber tires and full diecast metal construction, so you won’t have to worry about them getting dinged up when you use them in physics-defying race-track.

This isn’t the only time Forza and Hot Wheels have joined forces, as a few years ago, a Hot Wheels expansion for Forza Horizon 5 was released. That’s a fun and colorful piece of DLC that works wonderfully inside of Forza Horizon 5’s arcade-inspired gameplay, and there’s a very good deal right now on that DLC. Antonline is offering an Xbox Series X bundle for $500 that includes not only download codes for Forza Horizon 5 and the Hot Wheels expansion, but also Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which just released this week. That’s a discount of $130 in total, and you’re getting an excellent home console with some fun games to install on it.

Taylor Swift has rescheduled her concert tonight in Buenos Aires due to “chaotic” weather. She will perform at the Estadio River Plate stadium on Sunday, Nov. 12, instead.

“I love a rain show but I’m never going to endanger my fans or my fellow performers and crew,” Swift wrote on X/Twitter. “We’ve rescheduled tonight’s Buenos Aires show for Sunday due to the weather being so truly chaotic it would be unsafe to try and put on this concert. Good news is I get to stay in Argentina longer!!”

Tonight was supposed to be the second Argentina show in Swift’s ongoing Eras Tour. The pop megastar performed in the nation’s capital Thursday night, with surprise songs “The Very First Night” and “Labyrinth.”

Swift is no stranger to performing in inclement weather, as her May 20 performance in Foxborough, Mass., was met with pouring rain. “Last night we all danced together in the rain for THE ENTIRE 3.5 HOUR SHOW in foxy Foxborough MA!! We’ve had rain shows at Gillette Stadium before but this was a full on deluge that never let up, I just want to thank that iconic crowd!! Love you so much you have no idea,” Swift wrote on Instagram after the show. Weather forecasts for Buenos Aires Friday night include “heavy thunderstorms” and rain.

Swift is still set to perform in Buenos Aires Saturday. After the weekend, she’ll take the Eras Tour to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil for three nights at the Estádio Nilton Santos with opener Sabrina Carpenter. Next on the itinerary are three nights in São Paulo, four nights in Tokyo, seven nights in Australia and six nights in Singapore, before the tour heads to Europe and the U.K.

Swift has had a hell of a month. She snagged six Grammy nominations this morning, including for album of the year (“Midnights”) and song and record of the year (“Anti-Hero”). And her cinematic rendering of the blockbuster Eras Tour, which debuted Oct. 13 in movie theaters, has collected more than $230 million worldwide. It easily became the highest-grossing concert film of all time.

David Harbour and Winona Ryder in Stranger Things
Photo: Netflix

It sounds like Stranger Things is about to start filming again, and not a moment too soon. The kids are really getting into “How long have you been 17?” “A while” territory, and that bowl cut on Noah Schnapp looks goofier by the second. Millie Bobby Brown has previously expressed her desire to get the show on the road (and get the fuck out of Hawkins), and she’s not the only one.

According to David Harbour—the face and mustache behind beloved Chief of Police and Russia escapee Jim Hopper—the clock is ticking on the show’s final season, and not just the spooky one Max keeps seeing in season four. “I mean, we got to film that last season of Stranger Things, don’t we?” Harbour said when asked about his post-strike plans at a recent gala for Feeding America (via Variety). “I got to be down there, like, in a couple of days. We got to get going—we’re late.”

While it’s unclear whether or not scripts for the season are completely finished, the team has definitely been hard at work. Per a tease of the very first scene that they revealed on Twitter/X earlier this week, Hawkins’ final chapter will open with a child’s voice “singing a familiar song.” Will this sweet melody be 2022’s song of the summer, “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush? Or perhaps it will be Suzie singing “Never Ending Story” again? We’ll have to wait a while to find out.

Whenever the season does eventually wrap, Harbour hopes to take some key qualities of Hopper’s with him into whatever comes next. “Certainly his strength, his courage, his dedication. His powerful love for his family, and for right and wrong—his ideas of justice,” he shared.

Even without those lessons from Hopper, Harbour clearly has a keen eye towards combating unfair treatment in his own industry. “I think one of the beautiful things now is that we are taking care of people who are still training to become the stars of tomorrow—by giving them a living wage,” he said of advancements won in SAG-AFTRA’s tentative, strike-ending deal. “I think that’s fantastic.”

'Big Brother' Season 25 Winner Jag on

Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company announced that they have won the competition for Dallas Jenkins, creator of the series “The Chosen,” to adapt and direct “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” from Barbara Robinson’s book of the same name.

Other films Kingdom and Lionsgate have collaborated on include “Jesus Revolution,” which earned more than $50 million this year. Additionally, their film “Ordinary Angels,” with Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson, is slated for release on Feb. 23. “Unsung Hero,” starring Joel Smallbone and Daisy Betts, is scheduled for an April 26 release.

Per the film’s description, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” focuses on the Herdman children, who are “absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world. But this Christmas, they’re taking over their local church pageant – and they just might unwittingly teach a shocked community the true meaning of Christmas.”

“This is a dream come true and the movie I’ve most wanted to make my whole career. And I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone other than Lionsgate and Kingdom, who make great movies while supporting filmmakers,” said Jenkins.

Production will commence next month in Canada, with the film slated for a 2024 holiday release.

Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company announced that

Doolin, Ireland, has long been a gathering place for musicians. It is a literal tidal pool of Traditional Irish Music. Lila Schmitz’s documentary The Job of Songs explores the modern-day purveyors of the verbal histories handed down through music over hundreds of years. The village itself stands at the edge of this world… scoured by the brisk and wild Atlantic ocean on one side and bounded by the daunting Cliffs of Moher on the other.  From Doolin, one looks out West to the Aran Islands and the endless ocean. Ireland is a small island, 70 miles East to West and 300 miles North to South. Yet it has contained within its borders millennia of people born and dying. During the history of Ireland, there was always something someone else wanted to exploit, and they took by violence, all the way back to the Vikings. The British considered Irland to be a priest-infested backwater and forbade the speaking of the Irish language.  The history of the culture nearly died with the language had it not been for the music.

The Job of Songs follows several Irish musicians on their various roads to Doolin. Some of them are young, and others are quite old. The way of the music remains the same. They meet in a public house and invite musicians to join in the sessions. Sometimes a sing-song, but most of the time featuring uilleann pipes (a sort of bagpipe played at the elbow), fiddles, guitars, and the distinctive Irish drum called a bodhran.  These instruments are all portable and can be carried on one’s person… which is a crucial feature.

Driving down to Doolin from Galway, one passes through markers of Ireland’s deep history. From the emerald fields outside of Galway to the rugged, stony terrain of the Burren, down to the seaside. This landscape could feel hostile, wind-blasted, cold, and forbidding until one enters the pub. A warm fire blazes in the hearth, and beautiful food is served, usually a stew,  shepherd’s pie, or fish & chips. Two of Ireland’s most famous contributions to the world will be at hand here as well: Guinness beer and whiskey.

“…the Irish call this ‘pulling the piss‘…”

Schmitz touches on the depression that the heavy cloud cover over the island can bring. It often rains, and the winter daylight is gone by late afternoon. This environment of soft light and soft rain gave rise to the pub culture, where warmth and convivial company can always be found.  Singer Katey Theasby talks about her early days of performing in pubs. She has sobered up since then, but she did drink in the pubs when she began.

The filmmakers, including Schmitz, were not raised in Ireland and should have included some native Irish people in their crew because they’ve missed some points in the film. The dark, wry Irish humor is sometimes taken more seriously than it should be. The Irish call this “pulling the piss,” and they fished in Schmitz with some of the more morose answers and comments. That said, it is true that the Cliffs of Moher are a popular place to jump. Still, the overarching cultural vibe of Ireland is one of good cheer.

The slight tonal missteps aside, Schmitz does feature some of the most amazing musicians playing Irish music, including Luka Bloom, Kate Theasby, The Fiddle Case, Christy McNamara, Ann Rhyne,  Yvonne Casey, JB Samziun, and Charles Monod. The music alone is a compelling enough reason to enjoy the film.

Schmitz explains her spark for wanting to make the film in her director’s statement: “The Job of Songs was born of a feeling. When I traveled to Ireland for the first time, chasing my ancestral roots, I stepped into a session in Doolin, County Clare, and the feeling overwhelmed me. I could not describe it in words, yet there was something so important and gripping in those moments spent in the pub. The community. The history. The music. It did not leave me. I wanted to capture this feeling the best way I know how – and so this film came into being.” Despite the crush of tourists in the sleepy oceanside village, that sense of history and continuity still pervades in the music and on the faces of everyone who experiences it. All artifice fades away in the authenticity of the moment.

It turns out that what we need these songs for is to preserve a culture nearly wiped from the face of the Earth by 800 years of British oppression. The Job of Songs makes this clear.

Doolin, Ireland, has long been a gathering

Coca-Cola brand beverages have been deemed safe to drink in Croatia, government officials said on Thursday, following illnesses in the country that had raised fears that the bottles had been contaminated.

A man in the northern port city of Rijeka was hospitalized last weekend after consuming Romerquelle Emotion, a flavored, carbonated drink distributed by Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, a distributing partner of Coca-Cola. The incident spurred the Croatian authorities to order that some Coca-Cola H.B.C. drinks be pulled from shelves.

In the case of the man from Rijeka, Croatia’s health minister, Vili Beros, told reporters this week that analysis showed that an alkaline agent had been found inside the drink and on the bottle, adding that it was likely a cleaning solution or degreasing substance. It did not appear to affect other Coca-Cola drinks.

Forty-five people complained of digestive tract symptoms after consuming Coca-Cola-related beverages, Mr. Beros said, but only four had symptoms that could be consistent with ingesting an alkaline substance. He added that it was not clear whether that was the case, and he said most patients exhibited mild symptoms and were discharged for home treatment, chalking the concerns up to a regional panic.

“There is no reason either to panic or spread fear,” Mr. Beros said at a news conference, according to Index, the Croatian news site. “All institutions are doing their jobs, monitoring the situation and transparently sharing the news. It’s not good to fall for false messages — that contributes to the spread of panic and fear.”

The state inspection office said in a release on Thursday that tests of several bottles from a self-service machine and a retail store in Zagreb did not turn up anything irregular, nor did a separate test of Romerquelle Emotion at a restaurant in Rijeka.

Mr. Beros said the incident in Rijeka was an isolated case and that a criminal investigation was underway. He described the patient as “the most seriously ill” of the dozens who complained of symptoms.

“We welcome the clarity that the test results will bring for our consumers and customers in Croatia after the uncertainty of the last few days and our thoughts remain with the individual affected,” Coca-Cola H.B.C. said in a statement.

From Mary Tyler Moore’s black capri pants to the waist-cinching corsets on Bridgerton, the costumes on television’s hottest shows over the past 70-plus years have influenced what we wear more than viewers may realize. That’s the premise of Hal Rubenstein’s just-released book, which is sure to spawn an escapist deep dive by even the most casual TV fan.

Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows (Harper, $36) explores the costume design of 50 high-profile TV series, from I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show in the 1950s, to Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and others. But it was Bridgerton that inspired the idea for the book. “Harper wanted to do a book on Bridgerton’s costume design, and my feeling was that it was a period costume show that [didn’t relate yet],” Rubenstein told The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought we would see the ramifications of the look of the show soon, but people weren’t shopping it yet. The trickle-down effect hadn’t arrived. In the meantime, I had started to do some research, and I was kind of startled to notice that no one has ever done a book on TV costume design.”

A scene from Netflix’s Bridgerton.

Rubenstein returned to Harper with his refined idea. “I rattled off maybe 50 important costumes I thought of,” he explained. “It was everything from Fonzie’s leather jacket on Happy Days to Marlo Thomas’ A-line dresses on That Girl, on through the extraordinary clothes worn by Jodie Comer on Killing Eve — the pink dress she wore [in 2018] was the number-one Halloween costume that year.”

Killing Eve

In a season-one episode of Killing Eve, Jodie Comer wore a now-iconic pink tulle dress by London-based designer Molly Goddard.

The book explores the sartorial look of these and other shows, which Rubenstein has divided into themes, from period dramas like Mad Men and Brideshead Revisited to series that put an emphasis on female independence, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Scandal and Ally McBeal. The fashion excess that dominated the 1980s is showcased in a chapter titled “Now, Where’s My Black Card?” and kicks off with the fashion of Dynasty while also exploring more recent series like Emily in Paris and Schitt’s Creek. With each entry, Rubenstein offers not only behind-the-scenes details but also how the look of the show influenced the American psyche.

Dynasty

Joan Collins in a 1981 scene from Dynasty, with costumes by Nolan Miller.

“The book is about clothes, but it’s also about style and how we regard each other,” he said. “The psychology of clothes has always been more important to me than costume design. If you’re creating a wardrobe for a very specific character, the costume designer reads the script to understand the plot of the program, gets to know the personality of the actor or actress playing the role, who that person is in real life and who they will be onscreen. How do you create a wardrobe that’s in sync with these ideas?”

Author and costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis also lent a hand, assisting Rubenstein in getting in touch with several costume designers, past and present, for interviews. “She said, ‘No one is going to tell you no; this will be the easiest set of gets you’ve ever had,’” Rubenstein said. “And not a single costume designer said no to me because these stories haven’t been told before. The more I talked with them, the more my respect grew and grew. Such great stories of insight, warmth and respect.”

Mad Men

January Jones, Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendriks in costumes by Janie Bryant in Mad Men.

In the book, Emmy-winning costume designer Donna Zakowska discusses how her training as a painter informed her love of color and is reflected in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Scandal’s Lyn Paolo (who won an Emmy for Homefront in 1992 and was nominated this year for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) talks about the enduring popularity of the Tory Burch white trench coat worn by Kerry Washington, as well as the quantity of Prada handbags on set when the show wrapped (hint: it’s a big number). Rubenstein also interviewed Bob Mackie, whose legendary TV work famously included The Carol Burnett Show and The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.

“I also really loved interviewing the costume designer of The Mindy Project, Salvador Pérez Jr.,” Rubenstein says. “He talked about how he and Mindy Kaling would have fitting sessions that lasted four or five hours because she was just so excited about his designs. It was really lovely to watch this woman, who wrote and directed every episode of that series, but her sense of self changed with how his designs continued to transform her on the show. And you see that change still today, with how she has really embraced the red carpet. That’s the power of fashion.”

The Mindy Project

A sketch by costume designer Salvador Pérez Jr. for Mindy Kaling for The Mindy Project.

Rubenstein’s career as a fashion journalist and author aside (other books include 100 Unforgettable Dresses and Paisley Goes with Nothing), his love of fashion extends back to his childhood. His grandmother was a seamstress who oversaw a team of 40 sewers in New York City’s Garment District, and his earliest memories indeed include a passion for television clothes. “When I was a kid, I was crazy about the suits Dick Van Dyke wore on his [eponymous] show,” he said. “And at the end of every show, it said, ‘Dick Van Dyke’s suits by Botany 500,’ and I begged to get one of my own, because I was tall and gangly, just like him, and I loved the way he dressed.”

But Rubenstein also was keen enough to notice Mary Tyler Moore on that show as well, and how she ultimately revolutionized the idea of what the American housewife wore. “When CBS hired her to be Laura Petrie, she told the producers, ‘When I’m home, I don’t wear a dress, I wear pants and flat shoes — why would I walk around my house in heels?’” he noted. “It was quite liberating, and women in America loved it.”

I Love Lucy

A scene from I Love Lucy starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Jr. Ball purchased costumes off the rack during the show’s earliest years, until its success meant she could hire veteran costume designer Elois Jenssen and later Edward Stevenson, known for his costumes for Suspicion and Citizen Kane.

That isn’t to say that one of TV’s chief style influencers wasn’t also one of its earliest. When it’s pointed out to Rubenstein that an image of Lucille Ball in a scene from I Love Lucy includes a highly coveted white shirtdress with a rose-embroidered print through the waistline, he quickly agrees. “I do wish we had a color image of that dress, but it couldn’t be found,” he said. “But the thing about Lucy, and it doesn’t seem like a big deal 75 years later, she went on TV wearing maternity clothes, which was simply unheard of at the time. Women didn’t show up in public when they were pregnant; they didn’t say the word ‘pregnant.’ It makes her all the more remarkable — also because she never reduced the amount of slapstick she did on the show, and her husband always saw her as beautiful and sexy. It was pretty epic, and I think she started the maternity fashion industry.”

These and other anecdotes make for compelling, enjoyable reading in Dressing the Part, while Rubenstein says he’s proud that he could pay tribute to a costume-design industry that’s always been admired, even if its behind-the-scenes details have lived in the shadows. “And it took a little while,” he added, “but if you’re wondering why longline gloves and corsets are now on all the runways and red carpets, that’s the Bridgerton influence.”

The Carol Burnett Show

Bob Mackie designed the costumes for all 269 episodes of The Carol Burnett Show between 1967 and 1978, while simultaneously designing the costumes for The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour between 1971 and 1974. “If Cher is pumpernickel, Carol is white bread,” Mackie told Rubenstein in an interview in Dressing the Part. “And you have to be careful what you put on white bread, or it gets overwhelmed.”

Having worked at ESPN for over 30 years, Tina Thornton has witnessed the brand’s evolution over decades.

“In those 30 years, the brand has really evolved and gotten stronger and been a big part of who we are and our identity,” the executive vice president of creative studio and marketing said.

Thornton and Nidhi Bhagat, who works in brand marketing, discussed how ESPN has leveraged innovation to expand its brand identity in the Variety Studio, presented by Canva, at Advertising Week.

Thornton mentioned alternate broadcasts as an example of innovation, such as the “Toy Story Funday Football” telecast, an animated presentation of an NFL game that streamed on ESPN+ and Disney+ for kids.

“It has been just an amazing experience to look at the innovation and how far we’re bringing that, Thornton said. “The challenge is bringing that innovation to the forefront and bringing new audiences based upon that.”

Bhagat said they saw several people posting videos on social media of parents and kids watching the “Toy Story” broadcast together: “It really goes to show the power of sports and how it brings people together.”

“‘Toy Story’ just being fully animated and bringing a football field into Andy’s room and seeing all those small details that we’re proud of … like Slinky dog doing the 10 yard marker and stretching out when it was more. It’s just so cool to see,” she added.

As a result of these innovations, Thornton said ESPN’s ratings have been up. “People just want to watch live, and they want to feel like they’re a part of a community that is watching together,” she said.

Other examples of ESPN’s new initiatives include “NHL Big City Greens Classic,” which featured live volumetric animations of players and teams modeled after characters from the show “Big City Greens.”

“The NHL volumetric broadcasts have been really important to us, where we’re actually playing the game in an animated world,” Thornton said. “The other thing that I would say that we’re doing is a lot of access at this point. Access is really important to our fans. If you think about miking players in Major League Baseball or in the WNBA … we just want to give access to all of our fans in a unique and different way. And I think they’re demanding that at this point.”

While ESPN has seen success in their past and current innovations, Bhagat said she hopes to see more of a focus on the influencer space and inclusivity for 2024.

“Everyone has a different way where they fell in love with their sport. For me, I was watching NFL Sundays with my family — we’re huge Patriots fans — but instead of your typical wings and barbecue and tailgate, I had a menu of Indian street food ready,” she said. “I would love to see diverse influencers really affecting the game of sports, and we’re seeing more of these stories across the globe since sports brings people together.”

Marina Cicogna, an Italian countess who became her country’s first major female film producer, guiding to the screen celebrated films by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Franco Zeffirelli and Elio Petri, died on Nov. 4 at her home in Rome. She was 89.

Her death was announced by La Biennale di Venezia, the organizer of the Venice Film Festival. No cause was given.

Rising to prominence in an era when the only female names on film posters were often those of actresses, Ms. Cicogna (pronounced chi-CONE-ya) became one of the most powerful women in European cinema, as both a producer and a distributor.

She started from a lofty perch. Her maternal grandfather, Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata, was an industrialist and statesman who served various government roles, including as Italy’s minister of finance under Mussolini. He also founded the Venice Film Festival. In the mid-1960s, when Ms. Cicogna was in her early 30s, she and her brother Bino took control of her family’s production and distribution company, Euro International Films.

Even so, she faced challenges: working with imperious male auteurs; earning the respect of the country’s left-leaning cultural leaders despite her titled upbringing; and openly dating women as well as men at a time when such topics were rarely discussed in public by figures of authority.

Nor was her path as a woman always easy. “At the time I didn’t think about it,” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter Roma this year. “But at the end of the day, yes, the intention to put you down was there, definitely.”

Among the prominent films she produced or distributed were “Medea” (1969), Pasolini’s hypnotic reimagining of the Euripides tragedy, starring the opera singer Maria Callas; “Teorema” (1968), also directed by Pasolini, in which Terence Stamp plays an enigmatic stranger who seduces, one by one, members of a wealthy family in Milan; “Brother Sun Sister Moon” (1972), Zeffirelli’s lush retelling of the life of St. Francis of Assisi; and “Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion,” Petri’s Kafkaesque thriller, which won the Academy Award for best foreign-language film in 1971.

Ms. Cicogna also had three films at the 1967 Venice Film Festival, including Luis Buñuel’s “Belle de Jour,” starring Catherine Deneuve as a Paris housewife who secretly works at a bordello, which won the festival’s highest prize, the Golden Lion. In addition, she put her stamp on the proceedings by throwing a lavish party that became festival lore.

“I didn’t give a big ball, but rather said that everyone could dress as they wanted, as long as they were in white and yellow or white and gold,” Ms. Cicogna said in a 2013 interview with T, The New York Times’s style magazine. “I sent two small Learjets, one to Corsica to pick up Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and the other to Rome to pick up Jane Fonda and Roger Vadim.”

Such obvious displays of wealth would go out of fashion following the leftist student uprisings in Europe in 1968. “You couldn’t have a big party without hurting people’s feelings,” she continued. “You couldn’t go around with a Rolls-Royce without being thrown eggs at.”

Countess Marina Cicogna Mozzoni Volpi di Misurata was born on May 29, 1934, in Rome, the daughter of Count Cesare Cicogna Mozzoni, a banker, and Countess Annamaria Volpi di Misurata, who purchased Euro International Films, ultimately handing control over to her children.

Growing up, Ms. Cicogna was a cinema lover who mingled among the children of David O. Selznick, the producer of “Gone With the Wind,” and other film heavyweights at the Venice festival.

After an education in Italy, she enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., where she roomed with Barbara Warner, whose father was the Hollywood film mogul Jack Warner. During a school break, Ms. Warner invited her to California.

“I never went back,” Ms. Cicogna told T. “I stayed for three months in California at the Warners’.”

She later studied photography in the United States, brokering her platinum connections to shoot luminaries like Ezra Pound and Marilyn Monroe in candid moments.

Her early forays into the film business included distributing a 1967 West German film, “Helga.” “It was the first time you saw a birth, a woman producing a child, on film,” she told T. “I decided we should publicize it. We put ambulances at the exit of the film, saying that people would faint when they saw that.”

She was at times linked romantically with the likes of Warren Beatty and Alain Delon, but she also spent decades in a relationship with Florinda Bolkan, a Brazilian model and actress.

After they split, she began a long relationship with Benedetta Gardona, a woman more than two decades her junior, whom Ms. Cicogna legally adopted for financial reasons. Ms. Gardona remained her companion until Ms. Cicogna’s death. (Complete information on survivors was not immediately available).

Ms. Cicogna looked back on her career highlights of the 1960s and ’70s in the 2021 documentary “Marina Cicogna: La Vita e Tutto il Resto” (“Life and Everything Else”), directed by Andrea Bettinetti, as well as her autobiography, “Ancora Spero: Una Storia di Vita e di Cinema” (“I Still Hope: A Story of Life and Cinema”), published this year.

Still, in a 2017 video interview, she expressed regret that she had not remained in the film business. “If I had to look back, I should have never stopped producing, although Italian cinematography has not been the same since. It’s not so great,” she said, adding: “I am also a person who is very torn between the European rather lazy aesthetic way of life and the American more creative, more active way of life.”

“I’ve been more European than active,” she said. “I haven’t done as much as I should have done. But I can’t say I’m sorry. That’s the way it was, and that’s it.”

While Marvel is well-known for planning out its character arcs in advance, the story of The Marvles changed significantly from the time that DaCosta signed on to the final result. Still, the underlying themes have remained.

“It’s interesting. From the initial outline that I got when I was pitching to now, it’s quite different. However, these three women being in the film, switching places—a lot of the thematics that were under the surface had been there from the beginning,” DaCosta explains.

“I just wanted to pull that more to the surface. Family became a huge theme. Home became a huge theme. Figuring out the emotional underpinning of the relationships between the three of them was huge for me. That was how I’d think about it. I would think, “What can I bring to this?”

Assembling The Marvels’ Cast of Characters

The Marvels not only serves as a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel but also continues the stories of Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan. According to DaCosta, the choice of the film’s supporting characters took a lot of thought.

“It really was trial and error, but also just bringing to the fore everything we loved about these characters and following the thematics of what we wanted to talk about. For me, it was family,” she explained.

“It was home. Who represents family better than the Khans? Seeing how Kamala can go out and take on the world because her family is there supporting her every step of the way, that is something I think Captain Marvel needs to remember and to connect with. They kind of represent that theme for everyone in the film.”

Learning on the Job

Throughout the process, DaCosta continued to learn. After all, it was her first time directing a project of this scale.

“It was something I had really wanted to do, and I was given the opportunity to learn on this movie. The way I approached it was by being very honest and saying, “I’ve never done this before. So, while I’m learning how this works, I will be as clear as possible about what I want to see at the end of the day,” DaCosta recalled

“My VFX supervisor and my stunt coordinators would tell me what elements were required to shoot something. And as we kept going, I learned more. Eventually, I was able to do it really succinctly. We developed a shorthand. There was a lot of support and a lot of goodwill inside of Marvel to help me throughout that journey.”

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is the latest iteration in the Western revival that is happening at Paramount+, where series like Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923 have amassed swaths of viewers thanks to the dramatic vision of Taylor Sheridan. Lawmen: Bass Reeves is more of a stand-alone series in this universe, however, and is only executive produced by Sheridan; it is more the vision of Chad Feehan, who shines a light on one of the Wild West’s most significant personalities. The series premiered Nov. 5, and the third episode airs Nov. 12, but we have an exclusive clip ahead of time, which you can watch above. It’s the moment that Bass becomes a Deputy Marshal.

The official synopsis of Lawmen: Bass Reeves reads as follows:

“Revealing the untold story of the most legendary lawman in the Old West, Lawmen: Bass Reeves follows the journey of Reeves (Oyelowo) and his rise from enslavement to law enforcement as one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals west of the Mississippi. Despite arresting over 3,000 outlaws during the course of his career, the weight of the badge was heavy, and he wrestled with its moral and spiritual cost to his beloved family. Lawmen: Bass Reeves is an all-new, standalone anthology series and future iterations will follow other iconic lawmen and outlaws who have impacted history.”

The anthology series stars executive producer and Emmy nominee David Oyelowo, Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forrest Goodluck, Emmy Award winner Barry Pepper, Honorary Oscar recipient Donald Sutherland, and Emmy Award nominee Dennis Quaid. The cast includes Shea Whigham, and Garrett Hedlund as guest stars, and, in recurring roles, Joaquina Kalukango, Lonnie Chavis, Grantham Coleman, Tosin Morohunfola, Dale Dickey, Rob Morgan, Ryan O’Nan, Margot Bingham, Mo Brings Plenty, Justin Hurtt-Dunkley, and Bill Dawes.

David Oyelowo Is Praised as Bass Reeves

Paramount

Oyelowo’s performance as Bass Reeves, from slave to Marshal, has generated a great deal of acclaim, and not just from the critics. Lawmen: Bass Reeves creator Chad Feehan praised Oyelowo in our interview with Feehan:

“He’s the most dedicated craftsman I’ve ever been around. His commitment to his craft is astounding. His talent, I believe, is transcendent. And that can only be overshadowed by his persona. He is graceful and compassionate, and passionate. So it’s the highlight of my career to this point, to find myself working with somebody that is that gifted in one breath, but also that giving in another. So I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of it and worked with him.”

Meanwhile, one of the series’ directors, Damien Marcado, had this to say about Oyelowow:

David really impressed me with his readiness for this. This was beyond just the actor knowing lines and knowing how to deliver them. This was an actor knowing lines, how to deliver them while riding or galloping on a horse at full speed, and shooting a rifle. I could go on and list so many, but this was really a cut above the rest.

And if you don’t have Paramount+, you’re in luck — CBS will air a special sampling of the show on Sunday Nov. 12, following an episode of Yellowstone, which they also began airing.

Created for television by executive producer and showrunner Chad Feehan, Lawmen: Bass Reeves also is executive produced by Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan, David Oyelowo, David C. Glasser, Jessica Oyelowo, David Permut, Christina Alexandra Voros, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, and David Hutkin. The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios, Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions and Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon and is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution outside of Paramount+ international markets. After two weeks and a little since the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac has been revealing some interesting news regarding their Spider-Man universe and what could come next in the series. Recently, there was some major Miles Morales news that dropped.

In an interview with Gizmodo, the game’s writers confirmed that moving forward, Miles Morales will be the main protagonist in Insomniac’s Spider-Verse. Yes, that’s right, the Spider-Man with the extra special abilities will be New York City’s primary Spider-Man following the conclusion of Spider-Man 2.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 writers Brittney Morris and Ben Arfmann spoke on Miles taking the mask from Pete to be the watcher over NY:

Morris: “It always felt very natural, and I think we all collectively thought it would happen. To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life. By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city, and also carrying Pete when Pete wasn’t strong enough to carry himself at various points.”

Arfmann: “To echo what Brittney said: the idea of a two Spider-Man story was always really essential to this game. I think pretty early on, we knew that we wanted to have that moment of handing the reins over. And as we developed it, as we started to lay down more track leading up to that moment, it just felt more and more right.”

Via: gizmodo.com

The news of Miles taking the reign from Pete doesn’t come as a big surprise because of the way the game played out and what transpires once you’ve completed the main story. The two Spider-Men were struggling to juggle between their personal lives and their duty to keep New York safe, much like the Spider-Man story we’ve come accustomed to.

Following the heartache, the drama, the twists, the turns, the action, and the outcome of the Venom fight, Miles and Pete’s moment at the end teased the fate of Pete’s time as Spider-Man and ushered in the beginning of Miles as New York’s hero. While Miles “got this” Pete will go out and “be Peter Parker for a while”.

Although you can continue to switch between Miles and Pete in the aftermath, it’s pretty much a dead giveaway that Miles is the new sheriff in town. With his new suit and new attitude, he appears primed to take over the job.

After two weeks and a little since

Jonathan Wales is the co-supervising sound editor, re-recording mixer, and scoring mixer of the new Netflix show The Fall of the House of Usher. He’s worked in the sound department of several impressive projects, especially in the horror genre—he was on the team for Get Out, The Black Phone, The Mist, as well as many Mike Flanagan projects like The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep.

Inspired by the words of Edgar Allan Poe, Usher is like Succession put through a horror filter. It follows the filthy rich Usher family, which made its money through pharmaceuticals and, it turns out, nefarious means. The show is the final in the partnership between iconic horror writer/director Flanagan and Netflix, and it’s a strong farewell, for sure.

You’d be right if you assumed that sound plays a huge part in a show that offers new versions of “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” so we were excited to learn about Wales’ process on the sound team.

We spoke to him via Zoom to learn the secrets of the Usher family. Enjoy.

How sound is unique in the horror of Usher

The horror genre is a space for experimentation at all levels, but sound can be especially important here to set the scenes and play with what the audience is experiencing.

Wales said that this room for creativity is one thing that excites him about the genre.

“There are some genres in film where you really get to play around a lot more with sound, horror being one of them, sci-fi, high fantasy being another one … ” he said. “And when it’s horror, you’re trying to maybe deal with, well, ‘What is that person’s experience with this thing that is happening to them that’s kind of messed up?'”

But even in the middle of experimentation, the sound has to serve the story above all.

“We can make a lot of noise and do a lot of stuff; if it doesn’t help the story, then it’s distracting and weird and not good,” he said.

In the case of The Fall of the House of Usher, a key sequence throughout the show is Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) telling his family’s story to lawyer C. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) in his childhood home, which is falling down around them as a storm builds in each episode. A fireplace is one of the only other sources of sound in that location.

“I’m always playing with how the voices react in the space,” Wales said. “Especially in this show, actually, I did a lot of work with the same characters in different rooms, how their voices react with the room. So that house has a particular identity every time you’re there. You know you’re there from how it sounds.

“If you’re in the glass conference room, for instance, you know you’re in there from how it sounds, or if you’re in Freddy’s house, you know how it sounds from being there. I was trying very hard to get those identities to really feel consistent so that it gave a sound backdrop just from the way the dialogue sounds to each of those environments.”

Sometimes, in Usher, the important element of Wales’ work was the absence of sound.

“In a lot of the other rooms, especially in the modern office building, we were trying to be very sterile,” Wales said. “The whole notion of they’re in an ivory tower, they’re very divorced from the world around them, so we don’t really hear anything from outside. And it’s sort of got this low, just slightly ominous air conditioning vibe, but very little else. There’s no life to it. We don’t have other people in that office. We don’t have phones ringing, we don’t do any of that stuff that you might expect. And that gives it its own sort of isolation. Which is very difficult, actually, because then there’s nothing to hide behind ever if anything’s not right.”

Creating Sounds Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe

If you think about Poe’s work, you probably have some pretty iconic imagery in mind—a raven, a heart beating under floorboards, bells tolling, a pendulum swinging. So how did the creators of Usher take some of these iconic Gothic sounds and give them a unique, modern spin?

“We really did get to play with that a bit, because we’re dealing with unseen characters,” Wales said. ‘The Tell-Tale Heart,’ especially, is something that really doesn’t actually physically exist until the very, very end. And so you have this concept of an unseen object, that is really a sound-only construction, that is a full-on character in the show. Everything about the way T’Nia [Miller’s] acting, in terms of her reactions to it and everything … It’s like a character.”

They also had to figure out how to treat the sound in the scene as it related to reality.

“Sometimes we allow the audience to believe maybe it is real and maybe we’re hearing it as well, maybe it really is over there, to the left or whatever,” he said. “Especially in the early part. We were playing with making it feel like, ‘Well, maybe it is diegetic. Oh no, it’s actually not. It’s actually something that she’s hearing that the other characters can’t hear.'”

The sound of this element started to come together in the edit process with Mike Flanagan.

“There’s so much rhythm to how that reacts with the acting, and our job was then to take that and flesh it out even further, to really turn it into character,” Wales said. “It’s very interactive with the dialogue, because you have these places where, ‘Is she hearing something?’ She’s having a conversation with, say, Verna Carla [Gugino], but she’s hearing this heart, and then all the voice perspectives start changing. And that stuff’s tough, because you want to make sure you can still hear every word that they’re saying, even though you’re messing with the words. And a lot of the process there is to find out how far is too far.”

Pushing the limits is not a new concept in filmmaking. If you look through the advice scattered throughout NFS, you’ll see that creative after creative advise that it’s usually better to go too far rather than be timid. You can always tone down the writing, take pieces of costuming or set dressing away, or in this case, edit down sound.

“I do this a lot with Mike,” Wales said. “We’ll take something too far and then we’ll dial it back a bit. Because until you really know how far you can go, you haven’t fully figured it out.

“So we do that, we make things that are too big and then, or we make backgrounds that are too complex, and then we take elements back out as part of the way of figuring out what’s important and isn’t.”

The Most Challenging Sounds of Usher

Every scene and episode obviously present unique challenges, but what were those sequences in Usher? (Spoilers below.)

In many cases, the team had to come up with ways to express sounds that have never been heard before.

He pointed to the scene where Roderick Usher pondered possible suicide, as well as the finale sequence in the last episode, as difficult bits of work requiring balance and care.

“And then you have the scene with Verna in the office, when they’re looking out at all the bodies falling down,” Wales said. “There was a lot of, ‘Well, do these bodies make a noise? If they do, what is it?’ And again, I think in a lot of places like that, you go for things that are more of a feeling than a thing. We want the feeling of what that is to be more important than the literality of it.

“So Trevor [Gates], the sound designer, created all of these individual sounds of like, ‘Well, what does it feel like if the body rushes by the window outside?’ And we were layering those up, and obviously again, there’s a lot of score, and it’s all raining and there’s thunder.

“And so I think it’s like, how do we create that tension and still give the acting room to be what matters? Because ultimately, the whole scene is still about a conversation between two people.”

Despite the complexity of these sequences, however, Wales emphasized that in most cases, the focus of these scenes should still be the conversations happening between whichever two characters are on the screen.

Wales praised the performances of several actors in the show, including Carla Gugino, who made his job easier.

“Carla is just so miraculous in what she’s able to do. Also, not just with her acting, but with her voice and how you can’t ever not pay attention to a hundred percent of what she says, just because she has you in that spell that she has. And part of the trick is never to do anything that takes away from them. Only ever to enhance, but never to take away from the story.”

Advice from Wales for Stronger Sound

“I think the number-one piece of advice is you cannot be scared to experiment,” Wales said. “I think sometimes people fall into a trap of thinking that somehow we just know what we’re doing. And over time, you learn a few things, but the one thing you should never unlearn is that you should just try things.

“Very often, it’s the things you don’t expect to work in your mind that end up being sometimes the coolest ideas. So never don’t try an idea. Don’t think yourself out of a good idea, just try it. It might be great, it might be terrible, but you are never going to find that out until you allow yourself to just experiment. And it’s okay to overdo it, as long as you go back and edit your way back out of it. In other words, you don’t want to completely just throw things at the wall and see what sticks, but it’s very helpful to discover how much is too much.”

Wales hinted at the ultimate job of sound editors, which is to support the story and do their best to not be a distraction.

“And usually, that’s the thing you have to sort of teach yourself, is ‘At what point am I no longer watching the story and I’m just more watching a bunch of things happen, or a bunch of noise?'”

Sound, he said, is also not there to dictate.

“We’re not creating the emotion,” he said. “The emotion is there in the performances. But we’re trying to see what we can do to help it.”

He referenced one key scene near the end of the show, when Verna has to come to Lenore (Kyliegh Curran) to gently end her life.

“What is that scene? It is one person talking to another, just sitting on a bed,” Wales said. “It’s in the middle of all this stuff, and it’s a frighteningly terrifying thing, because you really effectively already know what’s happening and you know what’s going to happen. You know that this is curtains for her, and yet … What do we do? We play very subtle, but very emotionally, musically against it.

“So now it’s really all of the what could have been and what does happen, and then she dies. And it’s all in the acting. You could turn everything off and just listen to the words and it’s all there. And so it’s like, ‘How do we not screw that up? How do we bring the audience along, but we don’t take away from what’s in their acting lines?'”

The scene is extremely emotional, drawing tears from many viewers (including this writer). How do you know if something is working? If it’s an emotional scene like that one, Wales said, it should affect you just as much on every viewing.

“That means you’re winning,” he said.

Wales also advised, wisely, that “perfect is the enemy of the really good” and that you have to be satisfied with your work at some point.

“I’ve had too many times where you get somewhere good, and then you try and keep going and keep going and keep going, because, ‘Well, maybe it can be even better,'” he said. “And then at some point, you lose track of what was good. And then, if you’re smart about it, you eventually figure that out and go back to when you remember it was good.

“You really can try too hard. Less is often more, and the perfect is very often the enemy of the good.”
