Taylor Swift is proving why she’s such a beloved artist and it’s clear her fans aren’t going anywhere. Midnights broke the record for the most-streamed album in a single day.

For Taylor Swift, that’s just a typical Friday. We, here at Culturess also enjoyed the album and can see why it broke records. While it might not have been what a lot of us expected, the album does start to grow on you.

However, the major question is what is Taylor Swift going to do next? While her Midnights era has now started, it’s clear she isn’t going to be settling down for long and will soon be working on her newest project.

Heading into the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, what project should we expect from Taylor Swift next?

Let’s predict Taylor Swift’s next project after 2022’s Midnights.

Taylor Swift is one of those artists who is constantly evolving and changing yet still moving forward. With each change, her fans always support her and even a plethora of new fans join the gaggle. However her latest era aside, what could we see next from Miss Swift?

Personally, I think the next Taylor era is going to be another re-recording. Looking at her discography thus far, she’s only re-recorded two of her previous albums which were Fearless and Red, both Taylor’s Version. Looking at her previous works, there is Taylor Swift, Speak Now, 1989, and Reputation.

Each era shows a different side of Taylor, but considering all of the songs focused on revenge on Midnights, I feel like either Speak Now or Reputation has to be her next project. Honestly, I’d bet more on Reputation because I feel like Taylor is entering her villain era and I’m here for it so I’d love to see her tackle Reputation in the near future versus one of her other albums.

While Midnights was a surprise to most of us, it wouldn’t be unheard of to see Taylor release another original album. Re-recordings are no doubt a lot of fun, but can probably be a bit limiting for her. She’s having to relearn and resing all of her old songs along with some vault songs, too.

All of this isn’t even factoring in a tour that might be happening although there haven’t been any official announcements from Taylor yet. Regardless, that plays a big role in what we’ll be seeing from her next. If she does end up going on tour though, re-recording seems like a much better fit than her original material. However, Taylor really hasn’t stopped working and doesn’t look like she’s slowing down anytime soon either.

Maybe I’m thinking a bit far ahead as the Midnights era just started. Considering how genius Taylor’s marketing has been for this album though, I wouldn’t be surprised if she already has all of her re-recordings planned out. Until then though, we’re still in the Midnights era which is more than enough.

What do you think is next for Taylor Swift? I’d love to know your predictions in the comments.

A business’s future and profitability might be altered as a result of Public Relations. When used effectively, PR may enable a business to overcome basically any challenge. This is why a PR agency is so important, especially for filmmakers.

Filmmakers are starting to explore the possibilities offered by crypto. According to a report, the industry of cryptocurrencies is expected to grow from $1.6 billion in 2021 to $2.2 billion in 2026. These figures indicate that blockchain technology has a bright future.

Unfortunately, a lot of blockchain-based companies struggle to engage customers. And here is where bitcoin PR firms come into the equation. By offering public relations services and marketing your project, the cryptocurrency pr agency can aid in the expansion of your company.

If you want to learn what more services these organizations provide, please continue reading.

Building a Reputation

Before customers can trust a company in the market, to conduct business with them, your organization must first prove its credibility. By equipping people with educational content, the business must establish itself as an authority in the domain.

Increasing community connections and positive participation can assist in generating leads. As a result of this, a business can avoid spending a lot of money on advertising.

Startups in the blockchain network can benefit from crypto media thanks to cryptocurrency PR firms. A professional marketing firm provides a variety of PR releases across numerous channels. As a result, businesses can gain the visibility they need through forums, communities, influencer channels, specialized blockchain content, and SEO boosting.

Blockchain PR firms can assist you in running a crypto forum because social media communities are essential to crypto companies. Eligible investors can ask you a variety of questions regarding your proposal during such meetings.

So, having a partner who replies to issues like these in a timely manner can be quite advantageous. Remember that your credibility and transparency will enhance if you present a positive image to the social media community.

Creating a Marketing Strategy

It’s not enough to just announce your arrival into the market. You must create a strategy based on your needs and expectations. Influencer marketing, cryptocurrency email marketing, and cryptocurrency social media marketing are just a few possible components of your marketing process.

The method of creating the plan might be overwhelming, especially if you don’t have the necessary time, tools, or resources. Therefore, hiring the services of bitcoin PR organizations is the best course of action.

Product Upskilling

Although the market for cryptocurrencies is expanding, many people still don’t understand the concept. If you deal with bitcoin PR firms, they can assist you in spreading awareness of the sector.

It may assist in educating your target audience by writing informative articles for cryptocurrency news blogs and answering queries on cryptocurrency forums.

The educational content provided by bitcoin PR firms helps institutional investors and potential clients get any questions regarding blockchain-based products answered.

Establish your Brand as a Business Authority

In the fiercely competitive crypto ecosystem, practically anyone may launch their project. You must build your brand’s reputation as a subject matter expert in order to stand out from the competitors. You may build relationships with certain influencers who will promote your work in their communities through bitcoin PR services.

Creating quality content about your sector on a regular basis and enabling PR firms distribute it to reliable crypto media will help your budding company establish a reputation as an authority in the field. When readers click call-to-action (CTA) links in your articles, it raises brand awareness, which benefits in lead creation.

Cryptocurrency PR Agency produce clickable CTA links when conducting email marketing for the cryptocurrency industry or publishing content on blogs covering the industry. And this is how you attract customers to your company.

Threat Control

The cryptocurrency sector could experience a PR crisis, just like any other enterprise. Cryptocurrency PR services can assist you if your brand is being degraded by competitors or if clients don’t comprehend your product.

Even if making an official declaration can minimize the damages, building long-lasting relationships can help you preserve your reputation. Cryptocurrency PR firms may assist you in risk management, crisis management, and reshaping public perceptions of your business.

Maintain Direct Conversations

Users want to feel in control of a fast-moving environment like the blockchain ecosystem. A communication strategy can be established by cryptocurrency pr firms to make sure that your community is kept up to date about your future plans. Your company’s message can be shared on a crypto forum or can be published on a crypto media outlet by your crypto PR company.

Introducing Your Services to the Community

Your product launch may not succeed if you are a newcomer to the cryptocurrency industry. Even if your product or service has the strongest business proposition, you still need cryptocurrency PR firms to raise awareness about it.

The best course of action is to hire a knowledgeable PR firm to market your offering and educate others about it, even though blind advertising may draw some users.

Objectivity and Accessibility

The number of fraudulent transactions in the cryptocurrency sector has grown along with the industry’s continued expansion. Transparency has thus become a constitutive element in the sector. A brand can gain the trust of a community by being open and honest with users.

Through crypto media, crypto forums, social media platforms, and crypto news blogs, cryptocurrency pr firms may support in educating their audience and building confidence.

Interaction with Prominent Personalities

If you’re new to the cryptocurrency industry, you might not have the connections with influential people you need to grow your firm. A lot of people enjoy getting engaged in the company of influential business leaders like Elon Musk and Mark Cuban.

However, it would be beneficial if you acknowledge that not all well-known people are beneficial to your business. As a result, bitcoin PR firms can connect you with the relevant famous professionals who can help you spread the word about your business.

Conclusion

If your blockchain company is new, you must educate people about it in order to create leads. However, if marketing isn’t your strongest point, you might find the efforts to be overwhelming for you.

And for that reason, you should acquire the assistance of bitcoin PR firms. These were some of the main services that crypto PR agencies provide.

A top German doctor who was jailed for killing his married lover by sprinkling cocaine on his penis before she performed oral sex on him has been ordered to pay £11,500 to cover the cost of medics’ doomed bid to save the victim’s life.

Surgeon Dr Andreas David Niederbichler, 46, was jailed for nine years in 2019 for aggravated rape and bodily harm leading to death after making his lover, identified as Yvonne M., 38, take an overdose of cocaine that he had placed on his private parts.

During his trial, Niederbichler had claimed that Yvonne, who died after suffering shortness of breath and collapsing, knew that he had put cocaine on his penis before she performed oral sex.

But a German court rejected those claims and now a judge in Magdeburg, Germany, has ruled that Niederbichler must pay £11,500 (13,280 euros) to medical insurers IKK Gesund Plus who paid for Yvonne’s medical treatment before she died.

Niederbichler had previously refused to pay Yvonne’s family £25,000 in compensation, with £9,000 each going to the dead woman’s husband and son, and a further £7,000 going to her family to cover funeral costs.

Andreas Niederbichler

Yvonne M, 38 (left), died of an accidental overdose after her lover Andreas Niederbichler (right) laced his penis with cocaine without telling her

Yvonne was not Niederbichler’s only victim. The former head physician at the Halberstadt Clinic in Saxony-Anhalt drugged and sexually assaulted three other women between September 2015 and February 2018.

According to the investigation, he also secretly put cocaine in their champagne glasses, their lipstick, and their toothpaste.

The surgeon was charged in February 2018 when Yvonne M. died of an overdose after he put cocaine on his private parts during sex.

Niederbichler was sentenced in 2019 to nine years imprisonment and subsequent preventive detention. He is currently undergoing drug therapy.

Yvonne’s widowed husband and son sued the surgeon when he refused to pay financial compensation and also refused to cover the funeral costs.

The higher regional court last year agreed with the family and the man dubbed the German Christian Grey because of his perverted sexual fantasies has been ordered to pay for the funeral costs.

Judge Steffi Ewald said: ‘The defendant is sentenced to pay the funeral costs in the amount of £7,337, as well as survivor benefits to the deceased’s husband and the son in the amount of £8,581 each.’

Surgeon Dr Andreas David Niederbichler, 46, was jailed for nine years for aggravated rape and bodily harm leading to death

Niederbichler stayed silent during his trial but, faced with the new wrongful death lawsuit brought by Yvonne’s widower and son, he decided to break his silence to deny being responsible for her death.

He also denied drugging three other women, after the court was told he had again laced his penis with cocaine during oral, vagina and anal sex with the three women between 2015 and 2018.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild last month, he said: ‘Yes, there were drugs. But I didn’t drug any of the women without her knowledge.

‘I was looking for a special kick and they took part.’

Niederbichler also described Yvonne as an ‘experienced’ cocaine user, who knew what she was getting into.

Speaking about his original criminal trial, he said it was a ‘mistake’ to stay silent – a move he had taken on the advice of his lawyers – because it meant the judge only heard the women’s account of events.

He told Bild he wanted to prove that he was not criminally guilty of causing Yvonne’s death.

The court of appeal has already thrown out the case, and Niederbichler has not presented any new evidence that would force it to look at the case again.

Before being jailed, Niederbichler had worked as the top plastic surgeon at Ameos hospital in the city of Halberstadt, 60 miles outside Hanover.

The court heard that Yvonne had been a patient of his before the pair started an affair, which ultimately led to her death in February 2018.

Niederbichler also used the internet to meet other women for sex, judges were told during his trial.

Three other woman who had sex with the doctor reported feeling light-headed after meeting with him, while one was involved in two car crashes after a date.

Another reported passing out and suffering nervous twitches.

Niederbichler was ultimately found guilty of aggravated rape and bodily harm resulting in death and sentenced to nine years in jail.

He appealed the sentence but it was rejected.

Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen, 42, spent some quality time picking pumpkins with her two kiddos on Oct. 22 (see photos HERE). Vivian, 9, and her brother, Benjamin, 12, were all smiles on Saturday as their pops, Tom Brady, 45, played an away game in North Carolina. Gisele looked as beautiful as ever in a casual, but chic, ensemble that consisted of a semi-sheer grey t-shirt, light-grey leggings, and matching grey sneakers. The blonde bombshell let her long tresses down in their natural waves as they flowed in the wind. She completed the outdoor look with a pair of brown sunglasses and an on-trend blue purse. The mom-of-two was notably not wearing her wedding ring amid divorce rumors.

While picking the squashes, Gisele also stopped to chat with some other parents at the pumpkin patch. She was even spotted smiling while she ate a Klondike ice cream sandwich on the sunny afternoon. Her daughter, Vivian, also looked just as stylish as her mom in a blue floral skirt, pink t-shirt, and light brown sandals. Benjamin opted for a more casual look with a white t-shirt, grey basketball shorts, and black slides. The family left the venue with two large pumpkins in tow, with Benjamin helping his mom with the heavy jack-o’-lantern. Vivian was seen leaving with a tote bag full of fall goodies as she sipped a nice cold boba drink.

The family outing comes nearly three weeks after Page Six reported that that the Tampa Bay Buccaneer and the Victoria’s Secret model hired divorce lawyers. The divorce rumors come 13 years after the couple got married in 2009. Tom and Gisele have been reportedly living separately for a few months. “I never actually thought this argument would be the end of them, but it looks like it is,” a source told Page Six. “I don’t think there will be any coming back now. They both have lawyers and are looking at what a split will entail, who gets what and what the finances will be,” they added.

Amid the separation rumors, Gisele has notably not posted photos of Tom on her main Instagram feed since Aug. 3. That day she shared a sweet snapshot of the 45-year-old with their two kids. “Happy birthday to one of the most focused, disciplined and fashionable person I know! @tombrady you are so loved and we are always here cheering for you and wishing you all the most wonderful things in life!,” she captioned the post. And prior to that, she shared a photo of Vivian giving her dad a kiss on the cheek. “Daddy’s number one cheerleader! We love you so much!!! Happy father’s Day!,” Giselle wrote.

The news of their rumored split also comes about seven months after Tom reversed his decision to retire from the NFL. “These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Unfinished business LFG,” he wrote via Twitter in March. A source also told Page Six that the star athlete is reportedly hoping to win back his wife. “Tom is still hoping they can reconcile,” the insider told the outlet in Sept. “Gisele has told him she’s leaving him before, and they always made up when she cooled down.”

Following the unexpected death of “Call Me Kat” regular Leslie Jordan, Fox and Warner Bros. TV have opted to pause production on the sitcom, which stars Mayim Bialik.

The network plans to put a title card in this Thursday’s episode honoring Jordan. According to a source close to production, he had completed nine episodes of the current third season before his death.

Fox Entertainment also issued a statement on Monday: “We are shocked and devastated by today’s tragic passing of Leslie Jordan. Leslie was far more than an Emmy Award winning comedic talent with whom we’ve laughed alongside for all these years. He was the kindest person you could ever imagine who simply lit up a room and brought pure joy and huge smiles to millions of people around the world.”

Fox’s statement continued, “The truest of Southern Gentlemen, Leslie carried an infectious exuberance, indelible sense of humor and, throughout, gifted us with countless fond memories that will last forever. As we grieve this sad news, we also wish to extend our most profound sympathies to Leslie’s family, friends and fans, whom he held so dear.”

Warner Bros. Television, who produces the series, issued its own statement. “Warner Bros. Television is devastated about the tragic and sudden loss of our dear friend Leslie Jordan. Leslie was an extraordinary person and talent. He brought joy to fans across the globe. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans at this time.”

Several of Jordan’s past costars, including those from “Will & Grace,” and “The Cool Kids,” shared glowing tributes to the actor, who won an Emmy for his role as Beverley Leslie on the sitcom.

Jim Parsons, who serves as an executive producer on “Call Me Kat,” wrote of Jordan on Instagram, “If Leslie touched your life in any way, from near or far, you were never the same. Leslie was both a man of the earth and an absolute angel. He was funny as hell and had a depth of emotion that made everyone around him feel loved. I am shocked and sad beyond words to learn of his death, but I am equally filled with immense gratitude at having crossed his path on his journey. Rest in peace, you good, good man.”

In addition to Blunt and Spencer, the cast also includes Stephen Rea, Valerie Pachner, Rafe Spall, Tom Hughes, Toby Jones, and Ciarán Hinds. The series was created by Hugo Blick, whose past credits include British miniseries such as “The Honourable Woman,” “Black Earth Rising,” and “The Shadow Line.” In addition to writing and directing every episode, Blick executive produces with Blunt and Greg Brenman.

EXCLUSIVE: Emilia Jones (CODA), is set to lead director Susanna Fogel’s darkly comedic biopic Winner which has started principal photography.

The story follows Winner (Jones), a brilliant young misfit from Texas who finds her morals challenged while serving in the US Air Force and working as an NSA contractor. The film will offer a fresh take on the traditional whistleblower thriller. The heartfelt coming-of-age story follows an idealistic young woman persecuted for standing by her principles. After exposing Russia’s interference in the 2016 US presidential election, Reality was sentenced to five and a half years in prison — the longest sentence ever given to someone charged under the Espionage Act for leaking a government document. Britton plays Reality’s mother, Galifianakis, Reality’s father, Danny Ramirez plays her boyfriend and Kathryn Newton is Reality’s sister.

Starring alongside Jones is Connie Britton (The White Lotus), Zach Galifianakis (Baskets), Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies). The film is written by Kerry Howley and Susanna Fogel (Booksmart) and based on Howley’s 2017 New York Magazine feature on the US Air Force member and NSA Contractor, Reality Winner.

“As a filmmaker, I strive to tell stories that interrogate the world we live in and the systems that are broken in it. But in a fun way. Reality Winner is the perfect heroine for a film that meditates on ideas of personal power, morality, and finding your voice. She’s a true individual: she speaks many languages, she loves her guns, she could destroy you on Twitter, and her obsession with Pikachu is unmatched. Clearly, she’s the perfect mouthpiece for a generation of people who are unique and fed up with feeling powerless. And there is no one more perfect to play her than Emilia Jones, one of the most exciting young actresses working today. I hope Reality’s story will inspire others to speak up and defend their beliefs, whatever the cost. I’m thrilled to partner with this team of artists and activists to bring this movie to life,” said Susanna Fogel.

“When we first read this powerful script, we knew we wanted to help tell the story of Reality Winner. I have always been a fan of Susanna Fogel and to work with this caliber of talent to tell a female story is something we strive to do at ShivHans. We are looking forward to working in partnership with our friends at 1Community to bring this story to a wide audience,” said Shivani Rawat, Founder and CEO ShivHans Pictures.

“Our company’s mission is to find bold new takes on the most pressing issues of our time, and nothing could be more urgent than defending the ideals of democracy. Reality Winner’s story is fascinating, brave and timely. We are thrilled to join our partners ShivHans Pictures and couldn’t be more excited for Susanna Fogel’s fresh and comedic approach in bringing this story to screen.” – Scott Budnick, CEO 1Community.

The film is co-financed by ShivHans Pictures and 1Community. Producers are Amanda Phillips and Susanna Fogel, along with Shivani Rawat & Julie Goldstein of ShivHans Pictures (The Ice Road, The Water Man), Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla of 1Community (Just Mercy, Respect). Executive producers include Dani Melia, Peter Saraf, Daniel Bekerman, Connor Flanagan and Big Beach Films. UTA Independent Film Group negotiated the financing and will represent the worldwide sales rights to the film.

Sean said in the documentary, “Immunity deals are usually in writing. But I knew I couldn’t get a written immunity deal. After Cavill’s mid-credits cameo in “Black Adam,” the star confirmed he will be donning the Superman cape once more for a standalone DC film.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Henry Cavill confirming he’s Superman once again.

After Cavill seemingly hung up his DCU cape after Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” in 2017, the actor confirmed he is returning to the DCU in an Instagram post.

“I wanted to make it official — I am back as Superman,” Cavill said while thanking fans for their “patience” during the process.

“A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends,” Cavill captioned. “The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded.”

Cavill was cast by director Snyder in 2010, playing Superman in “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Justice League.”

Cavill returned as Superman in a mid-credits sequence for “Black Adam,” starring Dwayne Johnson as the titular anti-hero. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson was integral in having Cavill come back: former DC executive Walter Hamada initially denied Cavill’s credits cameo, with the “Black Adam” production forced to film Superman with a body double and test screened the sequence without showing the character’s face. In September 2022, Cavill filmed his part weeks before the “Black Adam” premiere after the deal was closed.

“Black Adam” co-star Johnson recently told Entertainment Tonight that the film could not have worked without an appearance by Superman. “We’ve established Black Adam as the most powerful and unstoppable force on our planet. But the fans have been so passionate about, as we have been, where’s the most unstoppable force in the universe?” Johnson said, citing the superhero. “‘Where is he?’ Well, just like I fought hard for ‘Black Adam’ for 15 years, [producers] Dany [Garcia] has been fighting for six years, Hiram [Garcia] has been fighting for six years, we’ve all been fighting for this moment. So, I will say this, ‘Welcome home!’”

Additionally, “Batman v Superman” star Ben Affleck returns as Batman in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” after similar reshoots. Oscar winner Affleck previously announced he was hanging up the cape for Batman in 2019. However, the “Deep Water” actor was confirmed to appear in “The Flash,” in theaters June 23, 2023. Former “Batman” star Michael Keaton is also set to reprise his role from the Tim Burton-helmed installments for the film.

After Cavill's mid-credits cameo in "Black Adam,"

On Oct. 25, Fox will air the 100th episode of The Resident, the episodic drama that celebrates the heroism and dysfunction present in the American medical system. But the show almost didn’t make it to air after being dropped by its developer Showtime and eventually rescued by a joint effort from Fox and 20th Television. Now a successful and beloved Tuesday night staple, it crosses the milestone once thought to signal inevitable syndication — and in the world of streaming disruption, the landmark episode serves as a reminder that network shows are still competing in a big way. To mark the occasion, executive producers Amy Holden Jones and Andrew Chapman spoke to THR about what it was like to get the series off the ground and what they’re most proud of.

What does this milestone of making it to 100 episodes mean to you?

AMY HOLDEN JONES Every single year we’ve been left on tenterhooks about whether we get picked up, just because of the nature of the fact that the show is owned by both Disney and Fox. But I will always remember that by the fifth episode of the show, one of our top writers turned to then-showrunner Todd Harthan and said, “Oh my God, this could run for 10 years.” The hope has always been there; I firmly believe that the show could go on indefinitely, but whether it gets that chance is outside of our control. But getting to 100 feels fantastic, doesn’t it, Andrew?

ANDREW CHAPMAN Yes. And honestly, I was more surprised that we got picked up at the end of season one than I am that we made it to 100 episodes. Really, at the end of every season, I think, “This is a miracle.”

When did you realize that the show had really become something — that there was a fandom?

CHAPMAN I first became really aware of the fandom when some of our primary castmembers left. When Shaunette Wilson [who played Mina] left in season three, we were so nervous that audiences were going to flee the show. She was so critical to the cast and really lit up the screen. People were upset but also liked the sendoff we wrote. I realized that people were really paying attention to the show — they cared about it.

HOLDEN JONES It came up again when Emily [VanCamp] left [early in season five]. The fandom around her Nic and Conrad [Matt Czuchry] became so intense. We actually waited to put them together — both actors told me during the first season, “Keep us apart, let the tension grow.” I said yes, knowing that wasn’t exactly going to happen. It was particularly heartbreaking when we got the news that, for her own very important reasons, she couldn’t come back. But Shaunette leaving was kind of a test. We learned that new castmembers can bring in new stories.

How do you decide on the best way, storywise, to write a main castmember off the show?

CHAPMAN Our first instinct is always that they’re leaving the show so we’re going to kill those characters. (Laughs.) Then we usually come to our senses and we hash it out.

HOLDEN JONES We draw a lot of storylines from real life, and it happened that the year Emily left was after I lost my husband of 45 years. Grief and loss were very much on my mind, and I thought, “This is a story I should tell.” The story of that entire season became one of grief and recovery. I think we made lemonade out of that lemon.

Amy, did you have multiple seasons of the show mapped when you were pitching to networks?

HOLDEN JONES I remember a crucial meeting I had with Dana Walden [then head of Fox Television Group] back when they were deciding whether to make The Resident or not. She asked me, “Do you have enough stories?” I said we have thousands of stories that haven’t yet been told on medical shows because we’re dealing with something that medical shows have never dealt with — that’s the underlying problems of the health care system, the things that doctors are fighting to make right.

The idea of exposing flaws in the health care system on a serialized drama was much edgier back then, before the political landscape and the pandemic made things like disparity of care widely known. Did that POV help you stand out to executives or were people resistant to the idea of criticizing medical workers?

HOLDEN JONES They were resistant. One of the problems with what gets on television is that executives are in a very precarious position. Developing anything outside of a specific template is difficult for them. It took a lot of bravery for Fox to make the show. The only time we were thrown for a loop was during the pandemic because we couldn’t be showing the corruption of medicine during a time when we needed to be encouraging people to go get a vaccine at the hospital. So that season, we made the hospital public and the problems came from outside the hospital.

From that process, or from what you’ve gone through to get the show to 100 episodes, do you feel particularly prescient about the landscape of the network television show?

HOLDEN JONES Both of us did pilots before The Resident, and we learned the mentality of a long shot. If you sell the networks something in September, by January they want something else. Or they pick up a show from someone famous, and it’s not even very good — because it’s from someone famous. I don’t have the answers to this business, and I don’t think anybody does because it’s so staggeringly in flux that there’s an aura of panic. My own opinion is that the pendulum is swinging back somewhat to network shows, and people are going to have to realize that.

As the show has progressed and you’ve seen a couple of castmembers move on, you’ve also added in new actors, like Morris Chestnut and Andrew McCarthy. What do you look for when adding to this already established dynamic?

CHAPMAN We look for complementary people, but we’re also very aware of specifically what kind of doctors we have in the hospital, from surgeons to internists to nurses to administrators. It’s a delicate balance because actors playing surgeons often get these exciting operating scenes that often come in the fourth or fifth act with these big, scary stakes. Like with Andrew McCarthy, he’s playing a pediatric surgeon, so that helps us. We do a lot of real-life medical thinking.

HOLDEN JONES You may have noticed that we’ve added actors from ’80s and ’90s sitcoms because my feeling is that if people can do comedy, they can do anything. We don’t want too much deadly seriousness on this show. We also make sure to properly vet people and make sure they haven’t been a problem on set elsewhere. A little-known fact to people outside of our cast and crew is that we have one of the happiest productions in television. There is no drama, there are no divas. Everyone really likes each other. That’s really important to me because once upon a time I was a director and wrote features, and I don’t think there was a single project where there wasn’t a great drama caused by someone. That’s really a great distraction.

Which moments from the first 99 episodes stand out to you as the most meaningful?

CHAPMAN I think our opening for season four, when we were in the heart of COVID and we did a COVID-themed episode, that was one of my favorite episodes by far. That episode was just a powerful thing to write — and to see — in the middle of the pandemic.

HOLDEN JONES A key episode for me is the pilot, which I’m very proud of. The fifth episode features multiple surgeries with Mina running in between them and an intern who kills himself. Those two storylines were supposed to be in the second episode, but the network freaked out and didn’t want to go there. I had terror in my heart that they wouldn’t let us do what we were trying to do, but by the fifth episode, they trusted Todd [Harthan], who wrote it and was the showrunner, to know what the show was all about. It really set the template.

Is there a piece of advice you wish you had back when you started the show?

CHAPMAN I think the most important thing for showrunning is remaining calm. Every episode, every season, there’s always going to be some disastrous thing. You read so much about shows that hand in scripts the night before they shoot and such, and we never do that. We work hard, and that’s great, but we never panic.

Given the nature of the surgeries and medical emergencies that happen in the show, is there ever any squeamishness on set?

CHAPMAN Yes, but we can’t really talk about it. (Laughs.) Not too long ago we had a guest start acting out a seizure and then actually had a panic attack and we had to call EMTs. It happened so many times that we had to stop shooting. And we had an actor — I won’t tell you who — who had an intense pus aversion and literally could not do a scene with it, even though it was fake.

Can you tease anything else about what we can expect from the rest of season six?

CHAPMAN We have a hot doctor coming. (Laughs.)

The Resident Cast In Their Own Words

Matt Czuchry (Conrad Hawkins) The first table read was brutal. Each castmember was in a chair, with the chairs not in a circle but a line. Some of the actors you were in a scene with were, like, four chairs down, so you had to crane your neck around the other actors in order to see. Sounds confusing and challenging? It was! There were cameras filming the performance for the studio to review after the reading, and the vast majority of our executives, who are amazing and supportive, were in that room assessing if this pilot could make it to air. That’s just one example of the madness it took for us collectively to get here.

Manish Dayal (Devon Pravesh) One of the most stressful scenes to shoot was when Devon’s father died of COVID. It was not just thematically complicated to portray a loved one dying on a Zoom call, but it was also very culturally relevant, and I wanted to get it right. To represent the pandemic was a big responsibility we all took very seriously, and it was important to me to illustrate authentically what it meant to be both a doctor and a son in that moment.

Bruce Greenwood (Randolph Bell) I remember from the first table read that a group of people this friendly and decent seemed too good to be true. There are so many stories from the set to choose from, I don’t know where to start. The short answer is “long days and nights as we burn the midnight oil.”

Malcolm-Jamal Warner (A.J. Austin) What I loved about the show from the very beginning is that Amy [Holden Jones] and the writers are not afraid to address the not-so-nice aspects of the medical field. For me, one of our most powerful episodes was when we tackled maternal mortality. The episode shed light on the fact that Black women face higher [mortality] rates than any other group — the odds of a Black woman dying from pregnancy or delivery complications are three to four times higher than white women. That’s an astonishing disparity I wasn’t aware of.

Jane Leeves (Kit Voss) My most stressful scene was when Kit volunteered to speak with Conrad about Nic’s wishes to be an organ donor when it was clear she would not survive. Matt was so fragile in that moment, and the eerie respectful silence on set added to the weight of it.

My Preamble

For anyone who read the recap for S01E01, you will know that not only have I predicted this series will be wildly successful, I also shared with you that my husband watched it with me.  Why does this matter?  Well it doesn’t really, but I think it’s noteworthy that a man who rarely watches anything outside of sports, is now locked in.  He’s a fan.  I heard him yesterday, talking about the show with our son.  “Say whaaaa?”  Looks like Tuesday nights is our new “date night.”

The subtext of S01E02 deals with family.  How parents raise you and teach you and set your feet upon the ground to find your own way.  Perhaps it isn’t an idealistic notion then, that what I’m witnessing throughout the fandom is so familial.  Supernatural is a show so loved, that it’s fandom languishes affectionately for a return of Sam and Dean Winchester.  In the absence of that, what better way to assuage their thirst, then to introduce a new incarnation of that world.  And they have expertly hit a home run.  The Winchesters does feel like a part of the Supernatural universe.  How wonderful then, that this show, these young actors and this cast, has beguiled us so effortlessly.  And it’s only the second episode!  Bring it!

Before I dive into the episode recap, I am making a declaration.  Mary Campbell, John Winchester, Latika Desai and Carlos Cervantez are the Fab 4.  The term has forever been associated with the Beatles, but I’m appropriating it.  Sorry, John, Paul, Ringo and George.  You know I will always love you.

Episode Recap

The CW-MOL Savannah

The CW-MOL Savannah

Carried over from episode one, the Fab 4 have travelled to Savannah, Georgia to the Men of Letters (MOL) clubhouse.  There are two things they are hoping to find; (1) Samuel Campbell, and (2) Documents that will show them how the Akrida have been crossing over into our world, so they can utilize the magic box to stop them.  What they find when they get there are several dead zombies.  They are soon under attack by two additional zombies and discover that the magic box designed to kill monsters, isn’t working.

After John and Mary kill the remaining zombies, they search for any evidence that Samuel had been there.  They find a shotgun shell with SC initials on it, and a newspaper article about a missing boy in Topeka, Kansas.  None of the Akrida files they were looking for are there.  Mary decides that the group needs to go to Topeka.  There is some dissension within the group regarding Mary’s decision-making.  Her decisions affect them all, but her singular focus is finding Samuel.  Carlos would like to continue hunting for the Akrida files.

The CW-Mary John Chat

While driving back to Kansas from Georgia, John and Mary talk.  John tells her that while he was in the Marines, he was a scout.  It was his job to find things.  After two weeks of being unable to find Samuel, John is beginning to doubt himself.  He is also beginning to have doubts about his ability to be a hunter.  Mary offered reassurances that it will all come with time.

Before going to Topeka, they stop at the Winchester garage.  After a week of not hearing from John, Millie is upset, and they get into an argument.  John believes that his mother thinks he isn’t good enough to follow in his father’s footsteps.  Once thing that Millie mentioned was that she got a call from Betty while John was away.  Who is Betty?

Mary and John are back in Topeka to interview Barry’s dad so Carlos made them college ID cards and has given them rock aliases of Mick Fleetwood and Christine McVie.  They find out that they do have a case in Topeka, and they have to go under cover in a commune, which makes Carlos very happy as he begins to sing the Age of Aquarius.

The Fab 4 split up to begin their investigation and Mary is convinced that the leader Clyde is a suspect.

The CW-Millie and Ada

Back at home, Ada visits Millie.  Ada tries to give Millie some reassurance that John will be okay.  She gives Millie a piece of paper that has the name and address of the motel John is staying at in Topeka.  It’s a gesture meant to give Millie some peace of mind.  Ada notices a vine that is growing up the wall of the garage and asks if she can take some.  Ada tells Millie that the vine is Jasmine and is for protection.

As our Fab 4 continue their investigation, they begin to suspect that it is a shapeshifter who is attacking, and Clyde becomes the next victim.  Mary thinks the monster is a mimic who are only vulnerable to weapons made out of copper.  Carlos has none, so John takes a van from one of the hippies at the commune and goes back to the motel for copper.

The monster seems to be connected to a rare purple flower that Lata is unable to identify.  She doesn’t think the monster they are dealing with is a mimic.  She calls Ada.

Ada is back in Lawrence at the MOL clubhouse, and she brews herself a tea made out of the Jasmine cutting she took from Millie’s and drinks it.  The tea makes her go into some sort of trance as she begins to write things down.

The CW-Carlos talks to Mary

Back at the commune, Mary and Carlos are walking in the forest around the grounds.  Carlos tells Mary that she needs to listen to the others in the group.  Carlos thinks she should idolize her father less and learn to be a leader without him.  Lata finds them and tells them she has identified the monster.  It is La Tunda who preys on disobedient children.  She captures them and feeds on them slowly in her lair.

Mary is especially concerned because John’s current situation with his mom makes him a prime target for La Tunda.

John, while at the motel collecting copper, is visited by his mom, which is La Tunda in disguise.  John is captured and taken.

The CW-Mary kills La Tunda

When Mary, Carlos and Lata arrive at the motel, they are too late.  They discover that the only way to kill La Tunda is to use her own magic against her and devise a plan that will break off a piece of her, that they can use to stab her in the heart.

Back at La Tunda’s lair, we see her begin to attack Barry.  John breaks free and helps Clyde escape before she comes after him.  As John is trying to fight her off, Mary, Carlos and Lata show up to help.  John is able to break off a piece of La Tunda’s “trunk” and Mary picks it up and uses it to stab her in the heart.  She sinks into the earth.

When the Fab 4 arrive back in Lawrence, they go to the Winchester Garage.  Carlos and Lata leave, Mary heads for her car (repaired by Millie) and drives away.  John and Millie talk, and she tells John that she believes in him.  They hug it out and Millie suggests they adopt the same rule that she and Henry had, and that is to always stop and let the other person know how much you love them.

The CW-Hooded Figure takes La Tunda

Back at the MOLs clubhouse, Mary, Lata, and Carlos dig into a pizza just as John shows up.  Ada comes in and tells them she has a lead on the box.  They all follow her to another part of the clubhouse, and she tells them about the auto-writing she did.  There is a demon out there that has the answers they need regarding the box, Samuel’s whereabouts, and the Akrida.

A hooded figure collects the soul of La Tundra from her resting place.  Who is this hooded person?  And what are the creatures that follow?

My Preamble For anyone who read the recap

A New Foundation for the DCEU

Black Adam

Courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery

The DCEU’s history is complicated, to say the least.  Many abandoned plans, projects, ideas and more made for a disjointed franchise of varying quality.  On the one hand, projects like those by Zack Snyder find a dedicated audience, while being unappealing to others.  Some projects, such as the 2017 Justice League and Suicide Squad are unanimously agreed to be among the worst films the Superhero genre has to offer.  Other projects, like Shazam, Wonder Woman, and, well, The Suicide Squad, stand among the strongest films in the Superhero genre.

Still, the DCEU has been a mess.  A mess, which The Rock seems prepared to clean up alongside the new WBD regime.

Black Adam marks the start of a new era for the DCEU.  In many regards, it echoes Man of Steel, the film which started the DCEU in the first place.  Fitting given the direction Dwayne Johnson seeks to guide the franchise moving forward, but how does this film stand on its own?  Well, simply put, Black Adam, much like Man of Steel, is ultimately enjoyable, though heavily flawed.  While the action and cast is stellar, a shaky script holds the film back from being more than an enjoyable popcorn flick.

Black Adam brings the Thunder

Black Adam

Courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery

Despite the flaws of this film, there’s more to enjoy in this film than most reviews let on.  One point which can’t be criticized is the action.  Of course, there is plenty of CG, but the variety of powers, and the extent of said powers make for a visual spectacle, the likes of which even Marvel would bat an eye to.  With the addition of the Justice Society of America, there’s a variety to the high-flying action in the film.  Some fights carry the same, Dragon Ball-like action that Man of Steel excelled at.  Other times, it’s combined with Dr. Strange type magic, thanks in part to Doctor Fate.

Of course, this is thanks in large part to Black Adam himself.  The Rock flawlessly sells the characters ruthless strength, establishing the character as a powerful force the larger DCEU will have to reckon with.  Unafraid to kill, Adam racks up quite the body count, some kills pushing the PG-13 rating.

Though issues with the story shall be brought up, the cast itself is quite strong, the stars of the show are Johnson and Pierce Brosnan.  Johnson plays Adam as a character with a ruthless form of justice.  The story of the character itself is interesting, and Johnson gets across the stoic pain and rage the character carries.  While a bit odd that he’s portrayed as more of a heroic figure, there is certainly room for him to grow as more of a villainous figure.  As for Brosnan’s Dr. Fate, he’s unexpectedly effective as an aging hero haunted by visions of the future.  He’s wise, charming, and plays off all his fellow cast members quite well.

Black Adam has One Massive Weakness

Black Adam

Courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery

Undoubtedly, Black Adam has one major flaw; the story.  While the specific stories of Black Adam and Dr. Fate are strong enough, there are multiple issues which hold the story back as a whole.  The biggest issue is the villain, easily one of the worst in the DCEU.  Not since the Enchantress in Suicide Squad has there been such a forgettable villain in a DC film, than Sabbac.  In addition, the pace of the film often doesn’t allow the film to breathe.  From the moment Black Adam comes on screen, the story goes at such a breakneck pace that it feels more like watching a series of bullet points rather than fleshed out ideas.  For a time, there was an interesting parallel to the Middle-East and the conflicts in the region.

The idea isn’t entirely fleshed out, but there is certainly something there.  The response the people of Kahndaq have to the JSA’s response to Intergang and Black Adam’s response is surprisingly realistic.  Most people in such an oppressed nation would likely view Black Adam as an effective savior.  Comparatively, the JSA comes in and seemingly makes the situation worse in the name of ‘justice’.  It’s honestly fascinating to think about.  Still, it doesn’t last long, and the final act story wise is ruined by the subpar villain.  In addition, odd moments of writing, such as the conclusion to Dr. Fates story, and the story line involving Bodhi Sabongul’s Amon aren’t necessarily bad, just muddled and cliche.

Overall Thoughts – A Flawed Start Leads to a Promising Future

Black Adam made for an enjoyable film; one with very noticeable writing flaws.  The action is a spectacle, and the characters have so much potential for the future.  But sloppy writing and a villain which compromises its third act hold this film back a lot.  Of course, it has to be mentioned that the post-credit scene is the most hype-inducing scene in the film.  Those who have paid attention to what Johnson has said in interviews for where he wishes to take the DCEU moving forward will likely know what it is.  Still, the confrontation to come from it will likely go down as one of the most intense, brutal confrontations to grace theaters by DC.

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 6/10.

Warner Bros Discovery knew they hit gold when they got Matt Reeves on their roster. Not only is the Batman 2 officially moving forward but Reeves has not only one but three Batman Villain stories in the works. In addition to booking a spin-off series which will be starring Colin Farrell’s Penguin which is also a sequel for Reeves’ The Batman and an Arkham Asylum series. Warner Bros Discovery signed a deal with the director and his production company, 6th & Idaho Productions which was described as “an open invitation” for Reeves “to go wherever his interests take him.” These projects will be feature-length adaptations examining Batman’s Rogues Gallery.

The Batman 2

As for Batman 2, it is said to be still in script status with Robert Pattinson returning as our favorite caped crusader. No word on what who the main villain will be. Rumors are suggesting that it will be Mr. Freeze, Pattinson and Paul Dano has expressed interest in the Court of Owls which would be fantastic. There is no release set as of right now set but we can be sure to start hearing more and more news on it. With the Penguin series starting to film soon there will be plenty surprises and guest appearances.

Who are the three villains?

The director is said to be meeting with other writers and directors to build out these worlds and other movies focused on Batman villains such as Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg. Everything is said to be still in the early stages and under wraps, but who are these villains?

Scarecrow

The Scarecrow is a supervillain first appearing in the American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, and debuted in World’s Finest Comics #3 in September 1941. The Scarecrow is depicted as one of the most enduring enemies of the superhero Batman. He also belongs to the collective of adversaries that make up his rogues gallery.

He is the alter ego of Jonathan Crane, a brilliant professor of psychology turned criminal mastermind. Abused and bullied in his youth, Crane develops an obsession with fear and uses a specially designed hallucinogenic drug–dubbed “fear toxin”–to exploit the phobias of the people of Gotham City and its protector, Batman. As the self-proclaimed “Master of Fear”, the Scarecrow’s crimes do not stem from a common desire for wealth or power, but from a cruel pleasure in terrorizing innocents to further his sadistic experiments on the manipulation of fear. The character usually wears an outfit symbolic of his namesake with a stitched mask and burlap hat.

The Scarecrow was adapted in various media incarnations and was portrayed by Cillian Murphy in The Dark Knight Trilogy films, Charlie Tahan and David W. Thompson on the Fox television series Gotham, and Vincent Kartheiser on the HBO Max streaming series Titans. Henry Polic II, Jeffrey Combs, Dino Andrade, John Noble, Robert Englund, and others have provided the character’s voice in media ranging from animation to video games.

Clayface

Clayface is an alias that was used by several supervillains appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Most incarnations of the character possess clay-like bodies and shapeshifting abilities. All of them have been depicted as adversaries of the superhero Batman. In 2009, Clayface was ranked as IGN’s 73rd-greatest comic book villain of all time.

A prominent enemy of Batman, Clayface has appeared in various forms of non-comics media. He was voiced by Ron Perlman, Steve Harris, and Alan Tudyk among others. With even a version of the character appearing on the television series Gotham, portrayed by Brian McManamon.

Professor Pyg

Professor Pyg is a supervillain who appears in comic books published by DC Comics, commonly known as an adversary of the superhero Batman. Pyg was created by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert and debuted as a corpse in the alternate reality story Batman #666 (July 2007) before being introduced as a recurring character in the mainstream DC Universe two years later in Batman and Robin #1 (June 2009). Professor Pyg was re-introduced following DC’s The New 52 comics relaunch in 2011, appearing throughout the continuity and the subsequent DC Rebirth relaunch that began in 2016.

The character’s in-world real name is Lazlo Valentin, a scientist who suffered a schizophrenic breakdown that led him to become a supervillain who wears a pig mask. Morrison intended Pyg to seem disconnected from reality, believing him to be one of the “weirdest, most insane” characters in Batman comic books. Pyg is an obsessive perfectionist who sees human beings as broken individuals; he commonly kidnaps people and uses surgery and chemicals to permanently change them into mind-controlled automatons known as Dollotrons, and sometimes into human–animal hybrids.

Morrison took the name “Professor Pyg” from the song “Pygmalism” by Momus and Kahimi Karie; the name “Pyg” is also shorthand for “Pygmalion”, referring to both the mythical sculptor who fell in love with his own creation and the 1913 stage play, both of which serve as parallels for Lazlo Valentin and his love for his Dollotron creations. The character’s origin story alludes to real-life animal testing carried out in the mid-twentieth century. He has a makeshift mother made of nails and boards, from which he associates auditory hallucinations commanding him to constantly improve his surgical work.

Pyg began making substantial appearances in other media in 2013 with the animated series Beware the Batman and has since appeared in video games, television, and film. The character has been positively received by entertainment journalists as a strange and disturbing addition to Batman’s rogues gallery.

The Penguin Series

This series is still in development and picks up “about a week after The Batman ends” while the city is still flooded, and the very first sequence sees the Gotham crime boss “splashing through the water in Carmine] Falcone’s office”. It will start filming in early of 2023. I am hoping for at least an appearance from Batman and/or Catwoman who left at the end of The Batman movie.

Farrell told Variety “So, Gotham is still, somewhat, underwater. I read the first script of the first episode and it opens up on my feet splashing through the water in Falcone’s office. Even that alone, when I read it, I was like, ‘Oh, Jesus!’“ It’s lovely. It’s so well-written,” Farrell added. “Lauren LeFranc has done such an extraordinary job, and she’s writing the whole thing and show-running. She is formidable. It’s just an exciting prospect. I love that character. I was greedy with it. I felt like I didn’t have enough. I wanted to do it more and more and more.”

One thing is for sure Warner Bros Discovery is in safe hands with Matt Reeves and I can’t wait to see what else they bring to the table.

The White Tiger
Cast: Adarsh Gourav, Priyanka Chopra, Rajkummar Rao
Director: Ramin Bahrani

“The Indian entrepreneur has to be straight and crooked, mocking and believing, sly and sincere, all at the same time.”

Balram Halwai (Adarsh Gourav), while continuously breaking the fourth wall through dialogues and gestures, readies us for the ‘dark times’. He asks us to not take the opening of the film on its face value as his story is not what it seems to be.

Director Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart, 99 Homes) focuses on the difficult choices made by an ambitious, fast learner and conniving Jharkhand boy in The White Tiger, based on a synonymous book by Aravind Adiga. In the process, he tries to explore the caste and economic divide and how they’re interrelated in modern India, which is not always about the shining module projected to the world. However, most of it fails to fetch any second looks.

Gourav stands his ground against Priyanka Chopra, who is brimming with confidence and a fantastic screen presence, and Rajkummar Rao, who struggles during accent swap. Because the narrator and the central character are one, bringing many sides of the story must have been tedious for Bahrani, but he somehow manages to give the audience a picture of how the rural-urban segregation could have worked during the initial days of liberal economy.

Despite promising a darker tale in the beginning, The White Tiger rarely ventures beyond the obvious. There is no denying that the privileged part of the West might find some portions unsettling, but overall, it doesn’t impact to the level that you begin pondering about the natural progression the story could have followed otherwise. Not comparing with Slumdog Millionaire, but at least Danny Boyle got the shock value to the optimum. Here, Bahrani entangles himself in metaphors that don’t generate any curiosity or are totally lost in translation.

I also have issues with celebrating grimness or justifying poverty or being underprivileged as the ultimate catalyst to crime, which unfortunately is the sole reason behind the bulk of Gourav’s deeds in the latter half. Even if it is not directly about the victim and the predator, you wouldn’t want the makers to cheer for the right person while standing in the wrong court.

Also, because a lot has changed since the release of the book in 2008, some plots could have been read in a new light. One thing that has categorically changed in last 12-13 years is the upliftment of the high aspirational values of the youth, both rural and urban. With the support from the government and some protection by the law, youngsters probably wouldn’t go down the ambiguous path of fraud and crime. It’s debatable though.

The White Tiger, streaming on Netflix in India, keeps feeding the same poor-guy-turned-criminal narrative to its takers. It hardly shows any intentions of scratching beneath the surface. Not intriguing enough.

Before its release, Halloween Ends was one of the most anticipated horror films. The film even got a hybrid release in theaters and streaming on Peacock.

With a title like Halloween Ends, it’s clear the film is serving as a wrap-up to the series. As most of us know, the 1978 film, Halloween was the start of the franchise and everything snowballed from that point.

As with any good horror franchise, there have been a few duds along the way. However, the one mainstay aside from Michael Myers has been Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode. In a lot of ways, it feels like it was a role Curtis was born to play as a lot of us can’t imagine anyone else as Laurie.

With Halloween Ends poised to be the end of the Halloween franchise, Laurie Strode cemented herself as the ultimate final girl.

Halloween Ends etched Laurie Strode in the horror film hall-of-fame.

The final girl trope has been prevalent in movies, TV shows, and books for decades. Even so, no one seems to hold a candle to Laurie Strode. The latest installment in the Halloween franchise, Halloween Ends only further cemented her status as the ultimate final girl. As the movie hasn’t been long, there won’t be any spoilers from Halloween Ends.

Regardless within her over 40-year run as Laurie Strode, Jamie Lee Curtis has grown with her audience, and with this chapter closing, it’s tough for everyone. In particular, Curtis talked to Yahoo and shared that she doesn’t know where she’d be without Laurie, ” Everything good in my life has come from Laurie Strode.” Those are pretty strong words and definitely something worth noting.

As we’ve watched the franchise change and evolve, we’ve watched the same of Laurie. She went from being a scared babysitter to a badass adult. As with most horror movie characters, Laurie dealt with a lot of tragedy in her life because of Michael Myers. However, she never let those tragedies define her. If anything, it made her a stronger person and character.

She never felt like a victim, if anything she was a survivor and that’s a testament to the growth and evolution of Jamie Lee Curtis as a performer. Frankly, it’s rare to see someone who plays a character for so long and grows with them as a character as she has. While horror movies seem to move on from the final girl in a movie or two, Laurie stayed until the bitter end.

If those traits weren’t enough to put Laurie Strode in the horror hall-of-fame, then her ability to evade her assailant for almost 4 decades should be more than enough. There is no doubt a lot of other final girls would have given up by now. Rightfully so but Laurie stuck around and made sure to plan, fight and scheme for decades.

It’s unclear if there will be another horror character or final girl as iconic as Laurie Strode. For a lot of us Halloween fans though, the answer is obvious. Personally, I don’t see how another final girl could ever stand next to Laurie Strode but hey, maybe we’re on the cusp of something unbelievable. Either way, there is no denying the cultural impact that both Laurie Strode and Jamie Lee Curtis have had on horror as a whole.

Halloween Ends is currently in theaters and streaming on Peacock.

Do you think Laurie Strode belongs in the horror hall of fame? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

Another extension has been agreed between Pact and Bectu for the pair’s UK TV Drama Agreement, with the saga now looking set to rumble on for almost a year.

Broadcasting union Bectu was supposed to be balloting its members from 14 October to 23 October with a result due today but instead the five-year agreement, which has already been extended twice and was due to lapse on September 1, will be balloted in December. Negotiations between the pair over the working agreement that has stood since 2017 first broke down in February 2022.

The move will give indie trade body Pact the opportunity to draft an agreement in full so as to avoid any doubt, according to CEO John McVay.

The issue has already been balloted on, with Bectu’s members “overwhelmingly” rejecting Pact’s terms over the summer.

The pair have had a longstanding disagreement over areas such as working hours, prep and wrap and wellbeing.

Large indies, streamers and studios have tended to side with Pact. Major producers such as Banijay, Bad Wolf and Element Pictures took the unprecedented step of writing to UK crew urging them to sign up to Pact’s agreement in September or risk “the whole of [UK] scripted TV being damaged,” and subsequently Pact invited commissioners to a “summit” to break the deadlock.

Deadline understands streaming services had been considering pulling shows out of the UK if Bectu’s full demands were met due to what they would deem too sharp an increase in costs.

I’m trying to remember every week that any spoilers or info I give about Zach’s season in a podcast, that I also put it into a column. The only real spoiler I’ve given about Zach’s season up to this point has been that first group date of the season where Tahzjuan is a judge for the group date but then tries to join the show during the after party. Then there was the 1-on-1 with Aly Jacobs that I added a couple weeks ago as well (I have more on that below). But other than that, I haven’t shared much because I’m waiting until Hometown dates so you’ll have everything before it. So if you can’t listen to the podcast today, I’ve included below the teaser spoilers I can give you about the season so far, including where they’re headed for episode #6, which should begin filming today or tomorrow. It’s just much easier to have everything in one place for you, that’s why you didn’t get any names to any of the spoiler teasers below. Those will all be filled in when I get your hometown date confirmations. You realize we’re only a little over a week away from hometowns? Time flies when you’re distracted by “Bachelor in Paradise” airing. But yes, we’re almost down to the final four. Cray zay.

Also, today’s podcast is going old school with Elizabeth Brown from Jake’s season of the “Bachelor” and “Bachelor Pad” season 1. At the time, she was Elizabeth Kitt, but then married Ty Brown from Ali’s season post-show. We get into all of that, including her time on both shows, her fertility struggles, and how you can vote for her in the “Fab Over 40” contest she’s currently in. I’ve included the link below. Vote now since the first stage of voting ends tonight at 7pm PST.

Some filming updates regarding Zach’s season that are in today’s podcast:

-Episode #6 begins filming today or tomorrow in Stockholm, Sweden
-A few of the limo entrances this season: someone does the TikTok trend of tortilla slapping with Zach, someone does a play on their name, someone brings in a pig on a leash to name a few.
-Someone gets eliminated during the cocktail party on night 1
-Something happens on night 1 that I wanna say hasn’t happened in probably 15-20 seasons
-Alyssa (Aly) Jacobs 1-on-1 date in episode 3 that I spoiled on Twitter with a video of her at a winery in Santa Barbara a couple weeks ago, they also went skydiving that day.
-There is a rose ceremony where only 1 women didn’t get a rose.
-There are more than one self-eliminations early on. Those can be tricky because it might be shown a different way, but basically those eliminations happen before a rose ceremony.
-The 5 women that Zach met on the ATFR – Bailey, Brianna, Brooklyn, Cat, and Christina – just keep them in mind for the time being. There’s something about those 5 that is fairly interesting.

You’ll have the answers to all this stuff in a couple weeks once I find out who the hometown dates are. Then I’ll be able to fill you in on everything before it.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the Golden Globes, will not have any press conferences this awards season.

“The HFPA will not be hosting any press conferences during the current awards cycle,” HFPA president Helen Hoehne said in a statement. “Our commitment remains on recognizing the very best in film and television both in the U.S. and abroad and bringing the Golden Globes to a global television and streaming audience.”

She continued, “With the expansion of the voting body and the increase in eligible content this year, we are focused on the nominations and making the 80th a historic event to remember.” Hoehne also stressed that the press conferences were never a requirement for awards consideration.

The news comes a month after the HFPA announced it was bringing the Golden Globes back to NBC after not broadcasting the awards in 2022 due to a Los Angeles Times exposé that revealed the organization had zero Black members and had engaged in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices.

Since the publication of the exposé in February 2021, the HFPA has added 103 new Golden Globes voters — but not members. For the first time, the L.A.-based organization “recruited from international industry organizations, as well as from active outreach to esteemed foreign film festivals and journalism professionals,” the HFPA announced in a statement at the time.

This move gives the organization a way to claim a more diverse voting pool without having to pay new voters the $75,000 it will pay its members now that it’s been acquired by Eldridge Industries and become a for-profit organization.

“The addition of new non-member voters drawn from international markets gives us the opportunity to more rapidly increase the number of voters, while preserving our international identity and maintaining the commitment to bring in qualified and experienced entertainment journalists,” Hoehne said.

The Golden Globes will return to NBC on Jan. 10.

“Words are wind.” Though no one ever says it in “The Black Queen,” the iconic Westerosi aphorism hovers over the episode like a fog. Rhaenyra Targaryen may be wearing her late father’s crown and she may be nominally the rightful heir; but “stale oaths,” as Otto Hightower says, are nowhere near as potent as a coronation performed before an audience of thousands.

While last week’s installment was dedicated to the Hightowers at the Red Keep, “The Black Queen” follows the Targaryens at Dragonstone. After escaping King’s Landing on dragonback, Princess Rhaenys arrives at the Stone Drum to give Rhaenyra and Daemon bad news and worse news: Viserys is dead, and Aegon was crowned before the old king’s body was even cold.

Daemon’s knee-jerk reaction is anger: He immediately accuses the Hightowers of murdering Viserys (which, given that his brother was basically a walking corpse the last time they saw him, is a bit rich) and calls Alicent a whore. We’ve seen a (mostly) gentler, more reserved Daemon ever since the 10-year time jump, but the monster we first met rises back to the surface with quickly.

Meanwhile, the shock of her father’s death and Alicent’s betrayal sends Rhaenyra into early labor—and House Of The Dragon gives us its fourth traumatic childbirth scene to date. Refusing the help of her maids and the maester, she pulls her stillborn child out of her own body in a gratuitously gruesome sequence that’s nonetheless masterfully acted by Emma D’Arcy.

In stark contrast to how Daemon handled his first wife Laena’s labor, he leaves Rhaenyra to suffer on her own, burying himself in his favorite pastime: war. He’s assembled a council to discuss the Blacks’ next move even as his wife screams for him from the floor above.

The unnamed baby’s funeral showcases how small the Dragonstone complement is, as the Targaryens and their crew stand on a cliff before the tiniest funeral pyre. Their number swells by one, however, when Ser Erryk Cargyll arrives and swears a new oath—not as a Kingsguard, but a Queensguard. And he brought a gift: Viserys’ crown, overlooked in favor of the crown of Aegon on the Conquerer the presumptive king now wears.

Daemon takes it from the knight’s hands and, as he did for his brother only a few days before, places the crown on Rhaenyra’s head and bends the knee. Everyone around him follows suit—all except Rhaenys, whose status as a free agent puts her in a unique position of power over both the Blacks and the Greens. But considering that her husband, the Sea Snake, has survived his battle injuries after all and is on his way to Dragonstone, that stalemate won’t last for long.

In short order, the newly crowned Queen Rhaenyra stands at the head of the Painted Table before her ad hoc Small Council. She’s still taking it all in (and of course, reeling from grief and physical trauma), but Daemon is all business. War is on the horizon, and war is his very favorite thing; so it’s no surprise he’s done his homework. What follows is the infodump to end all infodumps, as episode writer/creator Ryan J. Condal squeezes in enough information to make a grand maester’s head spin.

The long and the short of it: The forces at Dragonstone are small—enough to defend the castle, but not enough to go on the offensive—and their list of sworn allies is smaller. The group talks through which houses the Blacks can most likely win to their side (the Arryns, Tullys, Starks, and Baratheons) and which probably can’t (the Lannisters). (The more things change….) Full-on dragon fanboy Daemon lists all the fire-breathers each side has in their arsenal, the upshot being that the Greens only have four dragons to the Blacks’ 13. Finally, he suggests that they use Harrenhal as a base to mount an attack on King’s Landing. (Seems like setting up your HQ at the ancestral home of Harwin Strong, the not-so-secret father of Rhaenyra’s three not-so-secretly-illegitimate sons, is a bad move; but listen, I’m no battle strategist.)

Poor Matt Smith finally gets the chance to catch his breath thanks to the arrival of the Hand of the King. In a scene that’s a perfect mirror to the climax of the series’ second episode, Otto meets Daemon in the middle of Dragonstone Bridge to talk terms. And as in “The Rogue Prince,” Rhaenyra flies in on Syrax as a show of power—only this time, she’s on Daemon’s side instead of Otto’s.

The hand offers her Alicent’s terms: If Rhaenyra bends the knee to Aegon, she’ll get to keep Dragonstone, the Hightowers will acknowledge her black-haired sons as true-born, and her younger sons will be given positions at court. Daemon’s ready to start the war right then and there, but Rhaenyra tells him to stand down; she’ll take a day to think it over. Otto may be full of shit, but there is one thing the two have in common: They both loved Viserys, and neither wants to see the realm descend into the bloodshed the old king dedicated his life to keeping at bay.

The growing tension between Rhaenyra and Daemon comes to a head later that night, after the queen points out that having dragons doesn’t mean you should use dragons; in Thrones world, they’re essentially nuclear bombs, and even if their side won, she has no desire to “rule over a kingdom of ash and bone.” She cites the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy Viserys was obsessed with, and it brings out the old Daemon—the one who murdered his first wife without batting an eyelash. He wraps his fingers around Rhaenyra’s throat and says that portents don’t win wars; dragons do. It’s a chilling reminder that even if he bends the knee and calls her “your Grace,” Daemon’s hair-trigger temper and physical dominance could end her life as swiftly as any assassin’s blade.

In a marginally more successful marriage, Rhaenys reunites with Corlys at his bedside, and the two have it out. She accuses him of abandoning her in favor of adventure at sea and tells him of Vaemond’s death at the hands of Daemon. The Sea Snake wants to pack it in, declare neutrality, and live a quiet life on Driftmark with his grandchildren; Rhaenys points out that as long as Aegon is on the throne, Jace and Luke’s lives will always be in danger. Corlys is very understandably not into Rhaenyra, considering he believes her to have orchestrated his son’s death. But Rhaenys, easily the smartest person in the whole messy Targaryen/Velaryon/Hightower clan, says that her niece’s show of restraint amidst a crowd of war-hungry dudes makes her a horse worth backing.

The next day, the Sea Snake stands before the Painted Table and declares his allegiance to Rhaenyra—and with the power of the Velaryons on their side, the Blacks have a fighting chance. He’s finally pummeled the Triarchy and seized the Stepstones, which means they’ve got control of the Narrow Sea. His fleet can cut off trade and travel routes to King’s Landing, then lay siege to the Red Keep from the east. The queen says she won’t be the one to start a war, honoring her promise to Viserys to keep the realm united; but if the Greens throw the first stone, they need to be ready.

Rather than sending ravens to their prospective allies, Corlys suggests they send a couple of young princes on dragonback—Jace to Jayne Arryn in the Vale and Cregan Stark in Winterfell, and Luke to Borros Baratheon in the Stormlands. It sounds like a good idea at first; but the moment Rhaenyra hands letters to her sons and tells them they should be messengers and not warriors, it’s painfully obvious that things are about to go south.

In fact, “The Black Queen” couldn’t more clearly telegraph “Luke is going to die” if a herald shouted it from the parapets of Dragonstone. Rhaenyra and her second son share quiet moments throughout the episode, in which he talks about how reluctant he is to rule Driftmark and generally looks like a sweet, fragile baby bird. When his mother says that the Baratheons will give him “a warm welcome,” D’Arcy might as well have looked straight at the camera and announced his imminent death.

Eve Best

Eve Best
Photo: Ollie Upton/HBO

The episode gets even more heavy-handed as Luke lands in front of Storm’s End as literal thunder crashes around him. And his welcome, of course, is anything but warm. Borros is a cardboard villain, laughing dismissively at the young prince and calling him “boy.” The situation isn’t helped by Rhaenyra’s letter, which offers Borros nothing for his loyalty—not even a marriage pact. But you know who did make a marriage pact? Aemond “Crazy Eye” Targaryen, who’s standing near the throne with one of Borros’ daughters.

Aemond’s had this date with Luke ever since the latter slashed out his eye—and now he wants “Lord Strong” to cut out his own as a gift to Alicent. Borros tells them to take it outside, and they sure do. Luke takes off into the stormy sky on Arrax, a tiny dragon even by normal dragon standards; he looks like a hummingbird when Aemond flies overhead on Vhagar, the biggest dragon in the world. Fully cackling, the larger harries the smaller across the sky in a beautifully animated scene that must have blown through half of the season’s CGI budget. Eventually, both dragons wind up in blue sky high above the clouds, and both boys lose control of their mounts. Before Aemond can stop him, Vhagar chomps down on Arrax, sending pieces of dragon and rider falling down into the sea. This is what happens when you let children play with WMDs!

In the season’s final scene, Daemon delivers the news of their son’s death to his wife. (Don’t ask me how in the Seven Hells he even found out—perhaps via a raven named “Plot Expedience.”) We only see Rhaenyra from the back as she stands in front of a fireplace taking in this latest tragedy; this fresh grief wracks her body, and when she finally turns to the face the camera, she’s a woman transformed into something hard and deadly. And woe betide her enemies come season two.

The moment seems to be in conversation with Daenerys’ heel turn in the penultimate episode of Game Of Thrones, when she looks out over King’s Landing and makes the choice to burn it to the ground. But while that character beat felt like it came out of the clear blue sky, Rhaenyra’s doesn’t. In a matter of days, she’s lost her father, her baby, and now her teenage son, not to mention the Iron Throne. Whatever hell she unleashes next season, “The Black Queen” takes us there—even if it stumbles along the way.

Stray observations

  • It stretches credulity that Rhaenyra would send her young sons off to treat with uncertain allies in the middle of a cold war without so much as a single knight to escort them. It’s a lazy bit of world-building clearly done to speed the season to its inevitable conclusion.
  • Speaking of stretching credulity, Luke is meant to be 14 in this episode—the same age as Rhaenyra was when Viserys named her heir. House Of The Dragon seems to have wildly varying ideas of what a 14-year-old looks like.
  • It’s worth asking why this series is so fixated on graphic depictions of women suffering in labor. In a single season, we’ve seen Aemma Arryn undergo a deadly C-section in unflinching detail, Rhaenyra walk the length of the Red Keep with her afterbirth still leaking from her, Laena Velaryon commit suicide after she’s unable to deliver her child, and now this episode’s self-administered stillbirth. It’s one thing to acknowledge the reality that childbirth sans modern medicine is extremely dangerous for both mother and baby; it’s another to wallow in the gory details the way this series does.
  • Otto’s offer for Rhaenyra bending the knee includes naming her second-youngest son as King Aegon II’s cupbearer…whose name is, yes, also Aegon. I kind of wish she’d take the deal, because that would make a great sitcom.
  • Near the end of the episode, Daemon descends into Dragonmont singing a song in what’s presumably High Valyrian, summoning a wild dragon from the dark that’s so big that it looks like it could be a match for Vhagar.
  • Here’s easily the most fun piece of House Of The Dragon lore: The Lord of Riverrun whom Daemon hopes to win as an ally is named Grover Tully. According to Fire & Blood, his grandson is named Elmo, and his sons are named Kermit and Oscar. Yes, George R.R. Martin did name those characters after the Muppets.

There has been a consistent increase in the quality and variety of activities offered at both traditional and virtual casinos. Due in large part to this, more individuals all around the globe are partaking in gambling these days. Online and land-based casinos provide a wide variety of games for players to enjoy. They may choose from among thousands of variations of popular apps, including slots, blackjack, roulette, baccarat, lottery, cards, and more. With the proliferation of casinos and the popularity of wagering, Hollywood has warmed to the concept of making movies set in its industry.

Both participants and those who don’t partake in the activity find something to enjoy in these casino-set movies. Consequently, masterminds in the filming sector, Martin Scorsese and Lewis Milestone have found motivation, among others, to include entertainment houses in their projects. A film about internet casinos, maybe with a bunch of individuals engaged in some online blackjack action, would be entertaining to watch. The key point of the preamble is that the casino’s concept isn’t completely revealed to many filmmakers and spectators. That only adds to its allure. Now, let’s see some of the best ones regarding this theme.

Lucky You

With this fairly clichéd tale of a celebrity poker player Eric Bana and his tangled connection with his much greater father, the late Curtis Hanson put an abrupt stop to it. Although this plot has been told a thousand times in many better sports movies (there’s even a Big Game at the conclusion of this one), both Bana and Duvall bring fresh insight into their roles. The blockbuster bombed for this film, ending Hanson’s winning run.

The story takes place in 2003, and it focuses on Huck Cheever, a young and skilled poker player in Las Vegas who is troubled by his connection with his alienated father, L.C. Cheever, a two-time World Series of Poker Winner. Huck plays poker often in Las Vegas but lacks the $10,000 required to enter the World Series of Poker Grand Final. Even then, it was visible how casinos that take prepaid cards can be efficient. Many players have the opportunity to find themselves in a similar situation to Huck’s in the movie and identify with him. The only thing they would have to do in that scenario is to utilize their American Express, PayPal Prepaid, or any other online gambling gift cards. You bet that he wished to have one up to his sleeve in the film, right?

Maverick

There was a time when Mel Gibson was regarded as such a light and cheerful starring character that a major drama could ride on his attractiveness as a card hustler and con guy. Based on the classic ’50s television program (and co-starring that exhibition protagonist, James Garner), Maverick is somewhat of a gigantic contrivance, too lengthy and loaded with Western perspective by Richard Donner.

The picture isn’t without its charms, however, Jodie Foster, a close friend of Gibson’s, shines in a supporting part she’s avoided for most of her life but relishes here. In addition, the movie showed a good overture at an instant gift card casino and its values through the scenes. When choosing an online house to participate in, a large number of deposit and withdrawal options is a priority for many players. Due to their convenience, prepaid Visa and Visa Gift items have become more widespread. They came along and made everything even simpler. We know that today but the first glimpses of it date back to this and many other movies.

Ocean’s Eleven

Artworks with protagonists that gamble are usually given a gloomy message. The stale Rat Pack comedy was given new life by Steven Soderbergh in a jazzy, quick-witted reworking. From the opening card scene between George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s ultra-cool avatars, it was evident that Ocean’s Eleven will capture the confident air of contemporary Las Vegas, with its emphasis on high-end adult entertainment and few depictions of sleaze. Soderbergh’s cast is well-dressed and casual, exuding an air of confidence that even professional gamblers want. The director isn’t into the finer points of wagering and finds the metaphors used in games to be completely inane.

However, the movie explicitly shows what prepaid cards work for online gambling as it is filled with technologically advanced topics and gadgets. Simply, they give players more confidence and relaxation when they don’t have enough cash at their disposal. Players in the movie used a plethora of variations for their deposits, including these items. The main character group also utilized a device to destroy the security systems on a casino vault and cause a citywide blackout called a “pinch.” It’s true that it exists, but in reality, they can’t completely cut power to the entire place.

Conclusion

Because wagering is, by necessity, an activity fraught with uncertainty and potential loss, films depicting the subject matter tend to be dramatic. Observing someone who is conservative and careful is boring, but watching a desperate person who is always taking risks is exciting. Film gamblers often resemble the seasoned officer who takes on one final case before hanging up his badge. They seldom retire to a quiet life in the suburbs, collecting their gains. Enjoying multiple games provide players with a lot of excitement and tense situations at the same time. And that is only one of many reasons why casinos found their place in the movies that become so viral even these days.

Tesla sales climb but fall short of revenue expectations

Tesla has been adjusting the prices in line with costs, the company told Reuters in a statement. Capacity utilization at its Shanghai Gigafactory has improved, while the supply chain remains stable, leading to lower costs, it said.

The price cut is the first by Tesla in China in 2022, after it raised the prices for the two models earlier in the year due to rising raw material costs. It comes after Tesla offered insurance incentives to buyers starting in September to encourage more purchases.

They do! Logan Brown married longtime girlfriend Michelle Petty on Saturday, October 22, and mom Janelle Brown and former stepmom Christine Brown both attended.

“Christine and I at Logan and Michelle’s wedding last night. Such a beautiful day,” Janelle, 53, shared via her Instagram Story on Sunday, October 23.

The Sister Wives star shared a second photo of herself with her children. “My kids. And the new bride and groom. Some of us are already sweating from the legendary Brown family dancing at events,” she captioned the snap.

Christine, meanwhile, shared shared a photo of herself with four of her daughters — Aspyn, 27, Gwendlyn, 20, Ysabel, 19, and Truely, 12 — who joined her to watch their brother (they all have the same father, Kody Brown) get married. “It’s amazing and overwhelming to be the mom of these beautiful ladies,” the TLC personality, 50, wrote via her Instagram Story.

Janelle is the only one of Kody’s wives that Christine keeps in touch with regularly. “[Janelle has] come to visit me several times. I have a guest room and she stays in the guest room, and her sister also lives about a half an hour from me,” Christine told Us Weekly exclusively earlier this month. “So she’ll see her and then she loves seeing Aspyn and Mykelti and the baby and all of it. So we’ve gone on a couple of trips together too.”

Christine announced her split from Kody, 53, in November 2021. He remains spiritually married to Janelle and Meri Brown and legally wed to Robyn Brown.

Meanwhile, Logan and Michelle started dating in 2014 and got engaged in 2017. They waited until they were both finished school and saved some money before tying the knot.

Though Logan hasn’t been on Sister Wives since 2014, his parents excitedly told followers about the engagement in a 2017 video for TLC. “I was pretty excited,” Janelle said at the time. “I was kind of getting worried because I’m pretty attached to Michelle. I was getting a little bit worried that Logan would let her slip away so I’m glad to see some commitment here.

Kody added, “Logan and Michelle are a great match. Logan is sometimes high strung and Michelle knows to to calm down and get him to ease into it.”

More recently, his mom informed fans that he and Michelle finally moved into their forever home in July. “Celebrating Logan and Michelle’s new home today ! After months of delays they finally moved in. It’s an amazing space . Congratulations you guys ❤️,” she wrote via Instagram as they settled into their Las Vegas home.

Less than three weeks before the midterm elections in the U.S., the Republican National Committee sued Google — claiming Gmail is flagging the group’s fundraising emails as spam because of the RNC’s conservative views.

The RNC filed a lawsuit Friday, Oct. 21, against Google in federal district court in California claiming the internet giant is “unlawfully discriminating against the Republican National Committee (‘RNC’) by throttling its email messages because of the RNC’s political affiliation and views.”

The RNC asserted that Google’s political spam filtering has cost the org at least $75,000 in lost donations and alleged it faces long-term losses “in the millions of dollars.” The RNC’s suit seeks an injunction ordering Google to stop filtering its messages as spam plus unspecified monetary damages.

“Google has relegated millions of RNC emails en masse to potential donors’ and supporters’ spam folders during pivotal points in election fundraising and community building,” the RNC said in the lawsuit. “The timing of Google’s most egregious filtering is particularly damning.”

Google denies the RNC’s allegations. ”As we have repeatedly said, we simply don’t filter emails based on political affiliation. Gmail’s spam filters reflect users’ actions,” Google rep José Castañeda said in a statement to Reuters.

Google provides ”training and guidelines to campaigns” about its Gmail system, according to Castañeda. In addition, Google recently launched a pilot for political senders to help them bypass spam filters that was approved by the Federal Election Commission. “[W]e continue to work to maximize email deliverability while minimizing unwanted spam,” he said.

The RNC claims that Google’s “discrimination” has been ongoing for about 10 months “despite the RNC’s best efforts to work with Google.” However, the RNC “has not joined or even applied for” Google’s new spam-bypass program for political campaigns, The Verge reported last week.

Google TV added kids profiles to the platform in 2021, giving young viewers their own portal designed to showcase only age-appropriate content. Today, the company is building upon kids profiles with new features, including parent-managed watchlists, recommendations on the homescreen, and supervised usage of the normal YouTube app. All of these software capabilities begin rolling out today and will continue to reach Google TV customers over the next several weeks.

Managed watchlists are exactly what they sound like: parents can add movies and TV shows to a universal watchlist that will appear on the child’s Google TV homescreen. This will make it easy for them to progress from one video to the next. Adding content to a kids profile is simple: just select a movie or TV show as you normally would, press the watchlist button, and choose the right account.

Parents can add age-appropriate content that’s easy for kids to access.

Google is also bringing specific content recommendations directly to the homescreen for kids profiles. Until now, that homescreen has just displayed various kid-friendly streaming apps — but without the actual recs that appear on adult accounts. According to the company, these recommendations are “based on the apps you’ve added and the rating settings you’ve set.” Google notes it’s easy to hide anything you don’t want to appear on the homescreen again.

And lastly, Google is trying to create a natural pipeline for moving young viewers up and onward from YouTube Kids and get them using the regular YouTube app — with adult supervision along the way. “If you have older kids in your home that are ready to move on from YouTube Kids, Google TV now supports a supervised experience on YouTube, so they can start exploring more of what YouTube has to offer with their Google TV kids profile,” Google TV product manager Saleh Altayyar wrote in today’s blog post. “This experience comes with content settings for pre-teens and older, adjusts the features your child can use, and lets you block channels and manage additional controls through the YouTube mobile app.”

Opening up the full YouTube vault to younger users seems like the biggest gamble of Google’s new steps, but there’s nothing forcing parents to take that step until they’re ready. These new kid-centric features come alongside a redesigned Family Link app that Google is introducing today. The new version makes it easier and quicker to find commonly used tools and features, and there’s now a Highlights tab that “shows a snapshot of your child’s app usage, screen time and recently installed apps.”

Much anticipated Warner superhero movie, “Black Adam” predictably took top place at the South Korean box office over the weekend. But it did little to arrest the current downturn in what used to be the world’s fourth largest theatrical market.

“Black Adam” earned $2.33 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic) and $3.14 million in the five days since its opening on Wednesday.

The film played on more than 1,500 screens and achieved a 47% market share in Korea. In comparison, “Black Adam” earned $67 million in North America from 4,350 screens.

Its opening was weak by most local standards, too. “Black Adam” only ranked as the tenth best opening in Korea of 2022, a year when cinemas were operating at reduced capacity for four months.

Lower-placed films held steady over the weekend, but, with no other significant new releases to challenge “Black Adam” or revive audiences’ flagging interest, the weekend total was miserable.

The nationwide box office weekend aggregate amounted to just $4.95 million. That was a slight step up from the previous $4.19 million. But the weekend was still the third weakest since cinema restrictions were removed at the beginning of May.

“Life Is Beautiful” earned $543,000 with an 11% market share in second place. Since release on Sept. 28, 2022, it has amassed only $6.45 million.

“Crayon Shin-chan: School Mystery! The Splendid Tenkasu Academy” played on in third place with $441,000 over the weekend and $4.47 million since the end of September.

“Confidential Assignment 2: International,” a previous chart topper, earned $412,000 over the weekend. Its cumulative since Sept. 7, 2022, now stands at $49.1 million, making it the fourth highest grossing film of the year to date.

“Orphan First Kill” rounded out the top five with $220,000. Its cumulative after two weekend is $1.11 million.

Aside from “Black Adam,” the only other new title to penetrate the top ten was local film “Devil in the Lake” which earned $102,000 over the weekend and $120,000 over its five opening days.

Hollywood talent agents are famously competitive with one another. Whether big or boutique, agencies parry and joust in wooing talent and sealing deals.

But some issues transcend money and ego. Hate speech is one of them.

Bob Gersh, longtime leader of the agency founded by his father in the 1960s, has watched Kanye West’s abhorrent outbursts of antisemitism over the past two weeks with dismay. On Saturday, the Gersh Agency chief reached out to Variety to express support for Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel’s call for businesses to condemn and cut ties with West. That list includes Apple, Spotify and Adidas. West has already had accounts restricted on Twitter and Instagram because of the nature of his comments about Jewish people.

“This is as low as it can get,” Gersh told Variety of West’s recent comments. “This is the most blatant form of hatred and antisemitism one could imagine. It doesn’t get any worse than this. People really need to hammer these companies in business with him to impress upon them how wrong it is to support somebody like this.”

Gersh credited his longtime rival with making a strong case for why industry leaders need to step up and be vocal about hate speech in his op-ed in The Financial Times, “Business silence on Kanye West’s anti-Semitism is not an option.”

“This is a moment in history where the stakes are high and being open about our values, and living them, is essential. Silence and inaction are not an option,” Emanuel wrote. “This is why it is necessary for all of us to speak out. Hatred and anti-Semitism should have no place in our society, no matter how much money is at stake.”

Gersh called Emanuel’s stance “right on” and credited his longtime rival with taking a public stand. The uproar over West’s statements has already cost him his association with the Balenciaga fashion house, which confirmed Friday that it has ended its business relationship with West.

On the importance of decision-makers to speak out, Gersh points to the dark legacy of the Blacklist era in 1940s and ’50s Hollywood. His father, the legendary tenpercenter Phil Gersh, represented screenwriters who were part of the Hollywood 10, notably Abraham Polonsky, Albert Maltz and Edward Dmytryk.

“People didn’t speak out then and people’s careers were ruined,” Gersh says of the anti-Communist witch hunts of the McCarthy era.

Famous Artists, the prosperous firm that Phil Gersh ran in the late 1950s, also aided in the early career of Harry Belafonte, who was quick to use his celebrity to support civil rights and social justice causes. Bob Gersh grew up seeing Belafonte perform and speak at Los Angeles-area events, alongside his brother and business partner, David Gersh.

“Dad set the tone for our business and for our world,” Bob Gersh says. “With those kind of values of supporting Belafonte and the Hollywood 10 writer-directors, that’s been a great legacy conferred on our business and we’ve tried to continue that.”

In contemporary times, Gersh cited actor David Schwimmer as a client who has been supported by the agency for his activism. And a number of Gersh-repped showrunners were involved in setting the statement of expectations from networks and studios on reproductive rights in light of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.

“People need to speak out. We can’t stay silent and we have to keep it up, like on the abortion front,” he said. “We can’t let up. We’ve got to be talking about it in a month or two from now as well.”

Zuri Craig, a singer who appeared on Season 10 of America’s Got Talent, died Friday. He was 44 years old.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the transition of our beloved son, brother and friend, Zuri Craig,” the singer’s family wrote on his Instagram page. “We thank you in advance for your prayers. Please honor our privacy during this unimaginable time of mourning.”

As of Sunday, a cause of death has not been revealed.

Craig was part of an Atlanta-based singing duo called The CraigLewis Band. In 2015, he, alongside his partner Jeffrey Lewis, competed on the talent show where they ultimately placed fifth overall. The duo turned heads crooning James Brown’s “This Is a Man’s World,” and later received a gold buzzer from Michael Bublé after performing a wowing rendition of Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Goin’ Down.”

Before he hit the AGT stage, Tyler Perry found Craig singing cover songs on YouTube, and hired him to appear in plays and movies like Madea’s Big Happy Family, Madea Gets a Job and A Madea Christmas.

In addition, The CraigLewis Band performed on Oprah in 2010, and followed that up with a spot on The Mo’Nique Show the year after. Craig was also set to produce a live production in Atlanta called “Soul Food Live” starting in November.

The 14th Annual Santa Fe International Film Festival has announced its juried award winners for the event which has run from Oct. 19-23.

More than 100 filmmakers have traveled to the Land of Enchantment state to show off their cinematic wares.

Says SFiFF Artistic Director Jacques Paisner, “We play strange movies, small movies and foreign films, and the audience is keen on a chance to see something they wouldn’t otherwise experience.”

Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award tonight is Qatsi trilogy filmmaker Godfrey Reggio who is here with his new documentary, scored by longtime collaborator Phillip Glass and edited by Jon Kane, Once Within a Time. The pic is billed as a “fantasy of the real with themes of climate change and the perils of technology, and their effects on future generations. It is geared towards children—not the children of the future, children are the future. It is their clarion call to resistance and a call to hope. It asks the evocative question, which age is this, the sunset or the dawn?”

On Sunday night, Twilight filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke is receiving the festival’s visionary award. As part of the fest, she’s holding an actor workshop with local actors today. She recently world premiered her latest movie, Prisoner’s Daughter, at TIFF. Hardwicke is directing three short scenes before an audience, inspired by paintings from three local Santa Fe painters. The experience is to convey what it’s like to prep a movie.

Games of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin is a big supporter of the festival with his Jean Cocteau Cinema a major venue that programs titles. He was on hand on Wednesday night to show off his new feature short production, Night of the Cooters, directed by Vincent D’Onofrio, which is part of a new short film anthology he’s making.

Taylor Swift titled one of her albums 1989, but when her new record Midnights arrived this week, it really did feel like that year: Fans were able to buy it on LP, CD, and — find that old boom box — a cassette. But don’t ask Steve Stepp, owner of the Missouri-based National Audio Company, if his in-demand firm is manufacturing all that tape. He won’t tell you.

“I can’t say that,” Stepp says, of both Swift’s album and last week’s cassette version of Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever. “We sign NDAs with the labels. I don’t know why. Some companies are that way. We have done Billie Eilish tapes before, put it that way.”

Welcome to the unexpected, ongoing, and sometimes baffling world of the cassette revival.

For much of the Seventies and Eighties, fans happily took to the cassette. Thanks to the arrival of the Sony Walkman in 1979, listeners could run, or, yes, walk, to their own private soundtrack for the first time — and could also make some pretty cool and personal mixtapes. But with the onset of the CD, sales of the cassette format peaked in 1989; in a symbolic death knell, Sony stopped making the Walkman in 2010. With that, the cassette seemed headed the way of the 78 rpm, the 8-track, and other relics of the 20th century music-listening experience.

Nostalgia for the audio cassette would seem to be a stretch. Few could possibly miss tangled tape, cracked cases, and audio quality that could sound like someone had thrown a blanket over a speaker. But at this point, its resurgence is undeniable. In addition to Swift and Eilish, Lady Gaga, the Weeknd, Maren Morris, and Sturgill Simpson, to name just a few, have made some of their albums available on the format. Next month’s Record Store Day will include tape versions of recent records by Alanis Morissette and My Morning Jacket.

That trend — major pop artists joining indie bands in the tape renaissance — partly explains why sales of the format have jumped in the last few years, from 173,000 in 2020 to 343,000 last year, according to Luminate. As of this writing, 306,384 cassettes have been sold in 2022, which means sales are on track to at least match last year’s. “It reminds me of the early days of the vinyl revival,” says Scott Register of ThinkIndie Distribution. “I’d go to conventions and speak about vinyl and laughter would ensue. I’d go back the next year and report higher sales percentages, and there would be less laughter.”

The music industry isn’t chuckling. Sensing a new profit avenue, the French company RTM Industries, known for its reel-to-reel tape, jumped into the cassette market in 2018. According to CEO Jean-Luc Renou, his firm has made the equivalent of “more than 2 million miles” of new tape — three or four times the amount of just four years ago. His company also makes its own portable player, inspired by the Walkman, for $99. Newly made boomboxes (from Crosley, among others) and other quasi-Walkman devices can be found in electronics stores, while companies like TEAC continue to make those home-stereo cassette players for living-room cranking. And cassette decks were being installed in many cars up through 2010, so a respectable road market still exists.

The slowdown in vinyl pressing plants during the pandemic has also stoked the cassette revival: Compared to the months it can take to press an LP, companies like RTM can be handed music, artwork, and cassettes and have finished tapes ready for artists to sell within two weeks.

So who exactly are buying the cassettes, even if 3,000 copies sold of an Avett Brothers cassette isn’t massive? Millennials and Gen Z may be tempted to view them as souvenirs, another type of merch that, like vinyl, bonds them to their favorite artists. According to Luminate CEO Rob Jonas, “Millennials in the U.S. are 42% more likely to buy cassette tapes than listeners from other generations” as a way to support their faves. There’s also Gen X nostalgia at play: Pearl Jam, for instance, reissued their hit song “Alive” last year — on the even more obscure “cassingle.” “They buy things you’d never think anyone would buy,” Chris Holt of Young Ones Records in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, says of Gen X customers. “They’re like, ‘Wow, man, Paula Abdul!’”

But along with the revival comes all sorts of quirks. One indie act decided it wanted to include a 12-panel insert, which measured about a foot and a half long when unfolded. “We had to find real thin paper,” says Stepp.

For stores, pricing, which is controlled by the labels, can be confounding. Certain tapes sell for between $8 and $10, while others go for upwards of $20. Some new editions, like the brown version of Eilish’s Happier Than Ever, have different-colored packaging, which can be its own issue. “The color of the shell is starting to be a thing,” says Holt. “People come in looking for a certain color and sometimes they won’t buy it because they want that color.”

Surely to the annoyance of some diehards, special-edition cassettes from the last few years can also fetch jacked-up resale prices online. A limited-edition tape version of Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia can go for $249 on eBay, and the 25th anniversary cassette of Sublime’s debut 40oz. to Freedom can set you back over $420. “It’s a little bit insane,” says Carrie Colliton of the Record Store Day group. “But people just love what they love. There are people who buy vinyl and don’t listen to it; they just like having a physical artifact. And cassettes are even easier to collect. We can’t underestimate the human love of things that are fun and cute.”

For some acts, there’s even old-fashioned analog appeal at work. Virginia’s country-rock blasters 49 Winchester just rolled out 300 cassette versions of their latest album, Fortune Favors the Bold. “There’s a little bit of warble and hiss on it,” admits bassist Chase Chafin. “But it honestly makes our record sound a little more like it’s in a time capsule. It has a life of its own.”

To commemorate the release, all six guys in the band decided to autograph the cover, which presented another challenge. “Yeah, some of the signatures are smaller,” Chafin says. “It’s very hard to sign those.”

LONDON — Boris Johnson flew home this weekend from his Caribbean getaway to campaign for prime minister again, hopeful for a coronation. But the problem for the mop-headed former leader is this: a lot of his fellow Conservative Party lawmakers, alongside so-called Tory grandees, big-money donors and once-friendly tabloid hacks, think his return to power would spell “disaster.”

Their word, not ours. Even some of Johnson’s once closest allies are wary. “Go back to the beach,” his former Brexit sidekick David Davis says. This isn’t your time, his former ministers say.

If Johnson does prevail, if he returns to office next week, a stunning and remarkable achievement, then one other thing would be true: a formerly wounded, disgraced, deposed Johnson will return as a wounded prime minister.

Johnson just has too much baggage to make a clean start. People have seen the movie. The sequel — or Johnson 2.0 as the British press have taken to calling it — will not escape the plot points of the original.

For starters, he is still facing a perilous investigation in Parliament over whether he lied to lawmakers about covid lockdown parties at 10 Downing Street. This is a serious charge — which could see him censured or worse — and would likely make headlines for months, a constant reminder of his ouster as party leader and prime minister in July.

Boris Johnson blames ‘the herd,’ resigns to make way for new U.K. leader

Liz Truss resigned as prime minister on Oct. 20 after six chaotic weeks in office. As Tory lawmakers ready themselves for a vote on Monday, over who runs their party and therefore who runs Britain, the surrogates for Johnson and his chief rival, the former finance minister Rishi Sunak, were duking it out on the morning talk shows, the gossipy Westminster WhatsAp groups and rounds of phone-calling and arm-twisting.

It is entirely possible that Johnson could top the hurdle and get 100 Conservative Party members of parliament to nominate him on Monday — and that later in the week, he could win a majority of the 170,000 or so dues-paying members of his party, who will vote online if there are two candidates still standing.

The members — older, wealthier, 97 percent white — tend to veer to the right of the party, and polling shows that they do favor Johnson over Sunak. But that may not be a given. In the last race between Truss and Sunak, the grass roots chose Truss but by less of a margin than many were expecting.

Once their hero, many say Johnson has let his members down. They might miss him — what pollsters saw as “Boris nostalgia” — but do they want to watch the next episode?

According to the BBC’s tally of public declarations, 145 lawmakers have backed Sunak; 57 are for Johnson and 23 for Penny Mordaunt. There are 357 Conservative members of Parliament, meaning that 132 have yet to declare.

While Johnson is clearly behind, there’s still a way for him to stay in the race past Monday.

Rishi Sunak officially joins race to be U.K. prime minister

But does he even want it? Johnson is the only one of three candidates not to publicly declare. Analysts say he may never formally announce, so that he isn’t on the record saying that he tried, especially if the risk of failure is high, which it is. He could just claim it was his supporters who wanted him to run.

Johnson has been “awfully quiet” this weekend, noted Robert Ford, a professor of politics at Manchester University.

Ford noted that Johnson didn’t run for leader after the 2016 Brexit vote, despite being the favorite to replace David Cameron because Johnson “thought it would be a hard slog to get the job and to do the job. He did run in 2019 when it wasn’t going to be a hard slog,” he said. “And now? It’s a hard slog … he may not get on the ballot and if he does, he may not win enough members, although he is probably the narrow favorite. And if he does get it, it’s a two-year horror show followed by an election that the Conservatives will probably lose. I’m not sure that’s going to be an offer that’s attractive to him.”

Boris Johnson may run again. He is still under investigation.

Johnson was once hugely popular. Today he is hugely divisive, even in his own party. Outside the party? The general public can’t stand him, according to the polls. His popularity has plummeted.

William Hague, a Tory grandee who was once a party leader himself, said that Johnson’s return to power was the “the worst idea I’ve heard of in the 46 years I’ve been a member of the Conservative Party” and would send the party into a “death spiral.”

Steve Baker, the Northern Ireland minister and influential figure among those on the right of the party, said that Johnson would be a “guaranteed disaster” that was “bound to implode.”

Baker said that Johnson isn’t one for “tedious rules” and that now “isn’t the time for Boris and his style.”

The former home secretary Suella Braverman, who is also on the right of the party, came out for Sunak. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, she said that while she has previously backed Johnson “we are in dire straits now. We need unity, stability and efficiency. Rishi is the only candidate that fits the bill.

When endorsing Sunak, lawmakers use words and phrases like “stability” and “competence,” the right man for the economic challenges ahead.

Those endorsing Johnson say “he got the big calls right” and “he’s learned from his mistakes” and “is contrite.”

The majority of Brits say they want a general election, even though one is not required until January 2025. An election can be called early but it would require the support of Conservative lawmakers, which seems unlikely given that the party faces a near wipeout if an election was held today. A petition calling for a general election “to end the chaos of the current government” has quickly amassed over 850,000 signatures.

The race remains unpredictable and complicated by endless speculation and anonymous briefings.

On Saturday, the BBC alerted that Johnson had “more than 100 backers” and could be on the ballot, according to “campaign sources.”

An hour later, the outlet alerted that Suank’s supporters were demanding that Johnson “prove claims he has backing of more than 100 MPs.”

But while momentum seems for the day to be shifting to Sunak, Johnson was pulling a few big-name supporters himself.

Nadhim Zahawi, a former top minister in Johnson’s government, said he was backing his old boss again as he “got the big calls right” and argued “Britain needs him back.”

He tweeted: “When I was Chancellor, I saw a preview of what Boris 2.0 would look like. He was contrite & honest about his mistakes. He’d learned from those mistakes how he could run No10 & the country better.

Zahawi is the same man who, just three months ago when he was the second most powerful person in government, called on Johnson, to “go now.”

Gracie’s Corner, the children’s entertainment company behind the popular animated YouTube series of the same name, has signed with UTA and Underscore Talent.

In 2020, the Hollingsworth family — parents and educators Javoris “Jay” Hollingsworth and Arlene Gordon-Hollingsworth and their daughter, Graceyn “Gracie” Hollingsworth — were inspired by the lack of diverse children’s entertainment to create an animated show that featured their daughter and used music and dance to educate young viewers.

Using their in-home studio, Jay and Gracie, now 10 years old, created original songs for the show with an educational bent — “Workout Song” encourages exercise and movement, while “Deep Breath” teaches viewers how to cope with stressful situations — and have produced episodes with lessons about Juneteenth and Black hair.

‘Gracie’s Corner’

Victor Emerenini

Gracie’s Corner now has more than 1 million subscribers on YouTube and, as a business, has expanded into merchandise, books and other activity materials for families. Working with UTA and Underscore, the company will expand into longform content, podcasting, live events, publishing and consumer products.

“With cultural representation at the heart of the brand, Gracie’s Corner is universally appealing to parents and children seeking edutainment with characters that look like them,” Austin Mayster, Underscore talent partner and manager, said in a statement. “We are excited to work with Gracie and her family as they continue to create engaging educational entertainment for children.”

“Gracie’s Corner is a truly unique series that provides compelling entertainment at the intersection of music, education and more,” Ali Berman, UTA’s head of digital talent, added. “It’s an honor to represent this property.”

Gracie’s Corner is represented by UTA, Underscore Talent’s Reza Izad, Samantha Schoenberg and Mayster, as well as business manager Brett Anderson from Ground Control Business Management.

Marlon Wayans’ 2004 comedy “White Chicks” is just the type of movie that in today’s environment would get him canceled. Yes, he knows it, and no, he doesn’t care. “If a joke is gonna get me canceled, thank you for doing me that favor,” he said in a recent BuzzFeed interview.

“White Chicks,” which he wrote and produced with his brothers Keenan and Shawn, the latter of whom also starred with him in the film as two FBI agents who go undercover as white women (in white face) to solve a kidnapping plot. Although it was nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards (the Razzies) and was a critical bomb, audiences loved it and it has gone on to become something of a cult classic.

In today’s politically correct climate, however, it is unlikely it could have/would have been made and if it was made, there’s a good chance that the Wayans brothers would have been canceled, censorship which Marlon firmly fights against.

“I think they’re needed,” Wayans says of comedies like “White Chicks.” “I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and canceled. If a joke is gonna get me canceled, thank you for doing me that favor.”

“It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore,” he told BuzzFeed. “I ain’t listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks: These scared-ass people, these scared executives. Y’all do what you want to do? Great. I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I tell them. And if you want to make some money,  jump on board. And if not, then I’ll find a way to do it myself. I know my audience. My audience comes to my shows every weekend and they leave feeling great and laughing. One thing about the Wayans, we’ve always told the worst joke the best way.”

Marlon Wayans can currently be seen in his first-ever family film, “The Curse of Bridge Hollow,” on Netflix.

It seems like Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston were friends on and off the screen.

The Friends star, who played Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom, recently opened up about how his co-stars on the series were there for him while he was struggling with addiction — especially Aniston.

In a preview clip for his upcoming interview with Diane Sawyer, Perry said Aniston remained in close contact with him throughout his entire addiction struggle, which dated back to his mid-20s and early years on Friends.

“Jennifer, she says, ‘We know you’re drinking,’” Sawyer told Perry in the clip. “Yeah, imagine how scary a moment that was,” he replied.

He added, “She was the one that reached out the most. You know, I’m really grateful to her for that.”

The two-minute clip highlighted other parts from their Oct. 28 interview, like how at one point in his struggle, he was taking 55 Vicodin, methadone, Xanax and drinking a full quart of vodka all in one day.

“I should have been the toast of the town, but I was in a dark room meeting with nothing but drug dealers and completely alone,” Perry told Sawyer.

The interview comes on the heels of the actor’s recent People cover story — in which he got candid about his addiction in a way he hadn’t before — ahead of the Nov. 1 release of his memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.

“I thought being funny all the time was how I would get through,” he said in the story. “I thought [Friends] was going to fix everything. It didn’t.”

He also explained that while Aniston reached out to him the most, she wasn’t the only Friends star to rally around him.

“They were understanding, and they were patient,” Perry said. “It’s like penguins. In nature, when one is sick or very injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up and walk around until that penguin can walk on its own. And that’s kind of what the cast did for me.”

One of the best films of the year, Margaret Brown’s “Descendant” is, strictly speaking, about the discovery of the Clotilda, the last known slave ship.

After it was used to illegally kidnap and enslave more than 100 Africans, the 90-foot-long schooner was sunk near Mobile, Alabama, around 1860, decades after the international slave trade was outlawed. Until recently, it laid unfound somewhere in the muddy waters of the Mobile River, a lost, 160-year-old crime scene.

But “Descendant,” a prize-winner at the Sundance Film Festival, is exponentially more than an account of finding the Clotilda in 2019. Brown roves across the land, crowding her film with a wide spectrum of voices — community leaders, direct descendants from the Clotilda, passed-down accounts — for a living oral history that reckons with the long shadow of slavery. “I could care less about the ship,” says Joycelyn Davis, one of the film’s many vibrant, thoughtful subjects and a resident of Africatown, the Mobile hamlet founded by the Clotilda’s West Africans.

Descendant tells the story of the Clotilda – the last known ship to smuggle stolen Africans to America – the unthinkable cover-up, and the impact of that crime on generations of descendants living in Africatown. Once the past is revealed, can the future be reclaimed? #Descendant

Modern-day Africatown is, itself, evidence of how systematic racism can operate. With the city’s highest industrial zoning regulations, Africatown has long been surrounded by factories and refineries, leading to pollution and high local cancer rates. For “Descendant,” it’s a powerful illustration of how past and present perpetually intermingle in America.

“Descendant,” which Friday opens in select theaters and debuts on Netflix, is in many ways about storytelling as a form of resistance. Those that came on the Clotilda were warned not to tell anyone of their trafficking. The story went undocumented in history books. Instead, it was passed by word of mouth as local lore kept alive by descendants. Emmett Lewis, a particularly soulful descendant of Africatown founder Cudjo Lewis, describes it as “a ghost story” told to him by his father, and one he tells his young daughters.

For many, any clarity about the Clotilda is a way of adding definition to a severed heritage. One woman compares it to an adopted child searching for a parent. Among those who have learned that they’re a Clotilda descendant is Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, an executive producer on the film.

At the same time, the ship’s finding raises other questions of justice and of reparations. For many of the descendants, it’s not a theoretical question. The slave-trafficking financier of the Clotilda, Timothy Meaher, may have died more than a century ago, but his family is still a wealthy landowner in the area. The Meaher name adorns a local park.

There are few certain answers supplied by “Descendant,” a film that carries the banner of Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground. But there is a searching, ruminative dialogue running throughout the film. Brown and editors Michael Bloch and Geoffrey Richman beautifully weave together disparate voices into a meditative chorus.

It’s not just the living, either. Kern Jackson, a kindly folklorist and a central figure in the effort, plays a VHS tape of Mable Dennison, a descendant who wrote a biographical memoir of her grandfather, James Dennison, instructing others about their heritage. Brown also has many of the descendants read from Zora Neale Hurston’s “Barracoon,” a book based on her interviews in 1927 with Cudjo Lewis. It was surfaced only in 2018 by the author Alice Walker.

“The only fear,” Emmett Lewis says in the film’s final words, “is for my people’s story not to be told.”

“Descendant,” a Netflix release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for thematic material, brief language and smoking images. Running time: 109 minutes. Four stars out of four.

[This story contains spoilers for Black Adam.]

Black Adam received a last-minute jolt thanks to a post-credits scene restoring Henry Cavill to the role of Superman.

Negotiating Cavill’s return for the first time since 2017’s Justice League was hard-fought and came down to the wire, with the Black Adam team filming Dwayne Johnson’s half of the scene not knowing if the stars would even align for Cavill’s return.

“If we can get Henry to be in it, then we’ll figure that out on a future date,” cinematographer Lawrence Sher recalls in the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast.

The DP was informed of the Superman idea very late in the game. He recalls Black Adam director Jaume Collet-Serra describing it this way: “Let’s just quickly take this throne room set that we were working in … We’re going to create something for Dwayne to walk into  … And we’re going to shoot it in like 10 minutes.”

Johnson’s half of the scene was filmed as the final shot on the final day of additional photography. After filming Johnson’s half, the team put together the second half of the scene with a body double and a version of John Williams’ 1978 Superman theme they found on Google. In this version of the scene, they never showed the actor’s face, only the Superman emblem on his chest. But it was clear the idea was solid.

“Watching an actor come out of a full silhouette into that, was actually goosebumps. ‘Wow, this is 100 percent going to work. Now they need to figure out if they can get the guy with the head to be there,’” Sher recalls.

Black Adam began testing the movie with that scene thrown in, and the reaction renewed the urgency to secure Cavill.

“I went to a test screening … in which they did the version without his head … and it played gangbusters,” says Sher. “Then it was like, ‘Now we got to get Henry.’”

As The Hollywood Reporter detailed in a piece published Monday, Johnson lobbied hard for Cavill’s return. (Johnson shares a manager with Cavill, who also pushed hard.) Then-DC Films boss Walter Hamada rejected the idea, as he had his own plans for Superman. Johnson went around Hamada’s back to new Warner Bros. film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who approved the idea.

Once the deal was done, Cavill’s half of the scene was filmed last month in London, where the actor was located at the time. Sher did his work remotely, as he was not able to travel to the U.K., but even being on the other side of the world, Sher felt Cavill’s gravitas.

“There are certain people that are iconic as the characters that they play, and he’s really one of them,” says Sher.

The DP is now gearing up for another high-profile project, his return to the world of Todd Phillips’ Joker with Joker: Folie à Deux.

Sher reveals that the film will largely be shot in sound stages in Los Angeles, as well as on location in New York, where the project is set. Filming begins in five or six weeks time, with Lady Gaga joining Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix.

“She’s going to be a really cool fit for this movie and will create a similar kind of magic that Joaquin brought by himself,” says Sher. “The combination of the two will be exactly what we hope, which is exciting, and we’ll find magic every day on set. Hopefully we’ll also have a bit of madness in there. We like when there is a little bit of chaos.”

Swinging in late on what’s already been one of the biggest musical weekends of the year, Drake and 21 Savage have announced a new joint album that they’ll be releasing a week from now, on October 28. The album, announced alongside a new music video between the two artists, is titled Her Loss, which we’re choosing to interpret, not as a reference to a woman’s grief, but as a pun about male-pattern baldness. (Savage 21 turned 30 today; that stuff will creep up on you, friend.)

Specifically, the album was announced from within the video for “Jimmy Cooks,” off of Drake’s recent album Honestly, Nevermind. The pair have been collaborating pretty regularly lately; Drake recently surprised fans at a 21 Savage concert in Atlanta, and they previously collaborated on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy, as well as on 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s Savage Mode II.

Drake & 21 Savage – Jimmy Cooks

Honestly, though, we’re really just into this idea of artists starting to use music videos as press releases for their next major project; people are going to watch the damn things, so why confine yourself to promotion for an album you released four months ago? (Also, Variety notes that the name of the song, “Jimmy Cooks,” is presumably a reference to Drake’s Degrassi character, Jimmy Brooks, so that’s a fun little Easter egg for Degrassi fans. Bonus!)

As we noted above, the pair are just barely dodging a damn busy week of music releases: Taylor Swift, obviously, deployed Midnights this weekend, sucking up a decent chunk of all the oxygen in the room, but that’s not to discount major releases from Carly Rae Jepsen and a number of other artists. It’ll be interesting to see how Her Loss stacks up to the competition; Drake and Swift have been trading streaming records for a couple of years now, and “Cooks” recently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

When “The Twilight Zone” first premiered on CBS in 1959, audiences were not yet accustomed to cerebral and mature science fiction.

Created by Rod Serling, “The Twilight Zone” challenged expectations, audiences and censors by treating science fiction as a serious genre, highlighting its potential for social and political allegory. Featuring stories by Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Richard Matheson and Serling himself, its episodes posed complex ethical questions. Often recognized as one of the most formative television series of all time, its impact is still present in culture today. Submitted for your approval, here are nine contemporary artists whose careers reflect the enduring influence of “The Twilight Zone.”

“That’s the signpost up ahead—your next stop, ‘The Twilight Zone!’”

About Rod Serling

1. George R.R. Martin

George R. R. Martin at Worldcon 75, Helsinki, before the Hugo Awards.

One of the leading names in fantasy dramas, George R.R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones” series has captured the collective imagination with his characters and world-building. Well before “A Song of Ice and Fire” was released, Martin was facing the commercial failure of his 1983 novel, “The Armageddon Rag.” He told Financial Times:

“[‘The Armageddon Rag’] was the worst-selling of all my novels and essentially destroyed my career as a novelist at the time. Oddly enough, the same book that essentially crippled my career as a novelist started my career in Hollywood.”

Martin became a staff writer and story editor for the 1985 revival of “The Twilight Zone,” contributing five stories for the series. One of those episodes, “Lost and Found,” was adapted from a Phyllis Eisenstein short story—the writer who convinced him to include dragons in “Game of Thrones.”

2. M. Night Shyamalan

M. Night Shyamalan’s films like “The Sixth Sense,” “Signs” and “Unbreakable” have left many audiences shocked by their finales, often drawing comparisons to “The Twilight Zone” with “twist ending” episodes. On Twitter, Shyamalan shared his influences for his movie, “Old,” saying:

“For my fellow film nerds: @oldthemovie was inspired by classic movies. Some of them are: Nicholas Roeg’s Walkabout, Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock, Kaneto Shindo’s Kuroneko, Luis Bunuel’s The Exterminating Angel, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws & of course The Twilight Zone tv show.”

Shyamalan did a complete breakdown of his process and vision for “Old” in an episode of American Masters: Creative Spark.

3. Jordan Peele

Jordan Peele during the Peabody interview for “Key and Peele.”

No conversation on modern day horror auteurs would be complete without the inclusion of Jordan Peele, whose films “Get Out,” “Us” and “Nope” illustrate how supernatural stories can be used as a tool for powerful social commentary. Though he was originally hesitant to take on the role out of respect for the original show, Peele hosted the most recent “Twilight Zone” reboot. Calling Serling a “master of parable,” what appealed to him most was Serling’s sense of humor:

“One of the things that really opened this up for me was to realize that [Serling] is a humorist. We think of him as a horror science fiction master but he has a perfect-pitch tone of comedy… that we were calling the Serling wink. . . . ‘The Twilight Zone’ is a place where anything can happen. . . . That sort of subversive humor offers a relief from just the grind of reality, which is so often just depressing and struggling and, and crazy-making. He’s a comedy guy.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Peele revealed that “Us” was largely inspired by one of his favorite episodes, “Mirror Image.” Peele said, “It’s terrifying, beautiful, really elegant storytelling, and it opens up a world. It opens up your imagination.”

4. Mel Brooks

Mel Brooks might not be a name you’d connect to Rod Serling, but the comedic actor, writer and director has been a longtime “Twilight Zone” fan, even parodying an episode plot in a “Blazing Saddles” scene. Brooks contributed an entry in the book “Everything I Need to Know I Learned in ‘The Twilight Zone.’” Here’s what he had to say:

“The greatest lesson I learned is that you need to reserve judgment and seriously buy into the creation and design of the filmmaker. You’ve got to give it all up and go along with the magic. Every time I watched ‘The Twilight Zone,’ I was completely ready to surrender to it. That’s what the mystery of creation is all about. Give yourself over to that wonderful, wonderful mystery.”

Fun fact, Disney’s formerly “Twilight Zone”-themed ride, the “Tower of Terror,” was originally envisioned as a Mel Brooks attraction—”Mel Brooks’ Hollywood Horror Hotel.”

5. Ana Lily Amirpour

Ana Lily Amirpour made her feature debut with “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” a film she affectionately described as “the first Iranian vampire spaghetti western.” Amirpour also directed two episodes of Jordan Peele’s “Twilight Zone”—”A Traveler” and “Ovation.”

If you watch “A Traveler” closely, you might recognize quite a few “Easter eggs” in homage to Serling’s original series, including references to fan-favorite episodes “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” and “Living Doll,” as well as several character names which pay tribute to some of the original writers and directors.

On her career, Amirpour has said:

” . . . As an artist, and for me personally, my biggest fear is categorization. I hate the idea that I would become someone who says that ‘this is what I do and now that’s what I am.’ What I really feel like is an explorer. I want to continue exploring my brain cave and see what’s there, you know? And I don’t want to just stay in one cave.”

6. J.J. Abrams

Filmmaker and composer J.J. Abrams has made a name for himself in the world of science fiction with his work on “Lost,” “Fringe” and the “Cloverfield” series among many others. A longtime fan of “The Twilight Zone,” he told TIME that his favorite episode is “Walking Distance.”

J.J. Abrams, 2012

“‘Walking Distance’ is maybe the show’s best episode. . . . It’s just this beautiful story of a guy who, as an adult, wants to go back to his young self, and tell himself to be aware of what it is to be alive, to be young, and to enjoy that. And of course, you can never go back and tell yourself that. It’s a beautiful demonstration of the burden of adulthood, told in ‘The Twilight Zone,’ which everyone thinks is a scary show, but it’s actually a beautiful show. ‘The Twilight Zone’ at its best is better than anything else I’ve ever seen on television.”

Abrams even describes his “Cloverfield” shared-universe idea as inspired by Serling. In 2013, he secured the rights to Serling’s final unproduced screenplay, “The Stops Along the Way.”

7. Carol Burnett

Before she was the queen of TV comedy, Carol Burnett made a name for herself with appearances on late-night programs and as a cast member of “The Garry Moore Show.” Serling became a fan of Burnett and wrote a “Twilight Zone” episode with her in mind, entitled “Cavender is Coming.”

In “Everything I Need to Know I Learned in ‘The Twilight Zone,’” Burnett said, “I learned that there are no limits to the imagination.”

The only episode to include a laugh track, “Cavender is Coming” stars Burnett as a clumsy woman with a guardian angel. Utilizing Burnett’s skill for physical comedy, the episode features much more slapstick than what you’d typically expect from “The Twilight Zone.”

The episode also references Burnett’s first job as an usherette in Hollywood. After Burnett shared a story with Serling about the complicated hand signals instituted by her former boss, he incorporated her humorous story in the open of the episode. Burnett recalls this experience and many more in an extensive original interview from our Digital Archive.

8. Stephen King

Stephen King, 2011

Fondly called the “King of Horror,” Stephen King’s prolific career has spawned countless bestsellers, televisions series and movies. In 1981, King wrote “Danse Macabre,” his analysis of the way the genre reflects society’s anxieties, describing “The Twilight Zone” as “damn near immortal.” Many of his stories can be compared to classic “Twilight Zone” episodes featuring haunted objects and malevolent forces testing the will of characters. The 1985 to 1986 revival of “The Twilight Zone” featured the Stephen King story “Gramma,” and he commended Jordan Peele’s 2019 iteration of the series.

Although King cites “The Twilight Zone” as an influence, he especially credits Richard Matheson—one of the series’ key writers. In “The Twilight Zone Companion” by Marc Zicree, King said:

“[Matheson] was the first guy that I ever read who seemed to be doing something that Lovecraft wasn’t doing. It wasn’t eastern Europe—the horror could be in the Seven Eleven store down the block, or it could be just up the street. Something terrible could be going on even in a G.I. Bill-type ranch development near a college, it could be there as well. And to me, as a kid, that was a revelation, that was extremely exciting. He was putting the horror in places that I could relate to.” (p.57)

9. Guillermo Del Toro

Guillermo del Toro by Gage Skidmore, 2010

Guillermo Del Toro’s signature style blends fairy tale and macabre in films like “The Shape of Water,” “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Hellboy.” In his published personal notebook, “Cabinet of Curiosities: My Notebooks, Collections, and Other Obsessions,” Del Toro said “Rod Serling once observed, ‘The greatest fear of all is fear of the unknown, which you can’t share with others.’”

As if from “The Twilight Zone” itself, the trailer for “Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” conjures the spirit of Rod Serling. Dressed in a suit and facing the camera as he narrates, Del Toro invites viewers to an anthology featuring eight short horror stories promising to challenge the genre—sound familiar? Many publications have already referred to the series as Netflix’s “answer” to “The Twilight Zone.”

Del Toro also wrote the introduction to “Rod Serling’s Night Gallery—The Art of Darkness,” a companion guide for the horror anthology series. Del Toro cites a “Night Gallery” episode as one of his greatest childhood scares:

“The only time I literally, literally peed my pants in fear. I did! I’m not talking figuratively! I released the bladder! It was a ‘Night Gallery’ episode called ‘The Doll’ that was based on the Algernon Blackwood short story. . . . And when the doll smiles, I just started screaming. . . . I was forever haunted by that. I think that was very formative to me. . . . Those fears, the corridor to the bathroom in that house, they’re all in my shots.”

When “The Twilight Zone” first premiered on

The devastation caused by Russia’s plot to destroy a hydroelectric dam in Ukraine would be akin to dropping an atomic bomb, an expert has warned.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said last night Vladimir Putin’s forces had mined the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant and planned to blow it up it, in a bid to cover their retreat from the city of Kherson with a vast deluge of water.

Hundreds of thousands of people living around the lower Dnipro River would be in danger of rapid flooding if the dam was destroyed, Zelensky said.

The potential damage caused by such a move ‘can easily be compared to [an] atomic bomb explosion’, environmental security expert Maksym Soroka warned.

‘Everyone should understand that one cubic meter of water weighs a ton: imagine the amount of water in a meter-by-meter cube: that’s one ton. Dams contain a huge mass of water, millions of tons,’ Soroka told Rubryka, a Ukrainian news publication.

‘Force is mass multiplied by acceleration, and when that mass accelerates, we have a force of thousands of kilotons, and these forces are enough to destroy concrete. The devastating consequences become catastrophic.’

So far, he said, Putin’s forces ‘have had the sense not to attack our strategic hydraulic structures.’ Fears are rising that this could soon change.

The Nova Kakhovka dam has been hit by Ukrainian missiles in the past because it is topped by a road used to supply Putin’s troops, but they have stopped short of destroying it

Ukrainian soldiers have been steadily advancing and Moscow-installed authorities have begun evacuations in the region. On Friday, Kyiv’s troops continued to pile on the pressure on Russian positions, targeting resupply routes across the Dnieper river and inched closer to a full-scale assault to retake the strategic southern port city.

By blowing the dam, Russia’s aim is to halt Kyiv’s advance in the occupied region and protect Russian troops, according to Zelensky’s adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak.

Zelensky said by doing so, Russia would cause a ‘catastrophe on a grand scale’.

In addition to the devastating from the ensuing flood, he warned cutting water supplies to the south could also impact the cooling systems of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest. This could lead to a nuclear disaster that Ukraine and its western allies have feared since the invasion began.

The North Crimean canal, which provides a crucial water supply to Crimea – occupied since 2014 by Russia – could also be destroyed.

Meanwhile, Kremlin proxy officials said Friday they were building up defences and turning Ukraine’s southern city of Kherson into a ‘fortress’.

Britain’s MoD suggests Russia-Belarus joint taskforce is a bluff

Britain’s Ministry of Defence said on Friday that a Russian and Belarusian ‘joint taskforce‘ is a bluff to persuade Ukraine to divert troops to country’s northern border.

Last week, Belarusian president  and close Putin ally Aleksandr Lukashenko claimed up to 15,000 Russian troops would join 70,000 from his own country in the military exercise.

The day after, Belarus released images claiming to show Russian forces arriving in the country.

However, the MoD questioned the veracity of this, saying Russia ‘is unlikely to be able to generate combat-ready formations of the claimed size,’ adding: ‘Its forces are committed in Ukraine’.

‘The Belarussian military highly likely maintains minimal capability to undertake complex operations,’ the MoD’s assessment said.

From this, the ministry concluded that Lukashenko’s claim was a bluff, with the goal of forcing Kyiv to divert its forces away from other parts of Ukraine to set up defences in the north – and perhaps stymieing its on-going, successful counter-offensive in the south in the process – to help his ally.

‘The announcement is likely an attempt to demonstrate Russian-Belarussian solidarity and to convince Ukraine to divert forces to guard the northern border,’ the MoD said.

Following the announcement, Ukraine did say it was strengthening its defences in the north, but did not say how much of its forces were being deployed there.

As many as 2,000 Russian draftees have poured into the region ‘to replenish losses and strengthen units on the front line,’ according to Ukraine’s Army General Staff.

The Antonivskyi Bridge, which is on a main route from Crimea to Russian-held territories in southern Ukraine, was struck late on Thursday, said Natalia Humeniuk, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s southern operational command – but only after the 10pm local curfew, to avoid civilian casualties.

‘We do not attack civilians and settlements,’ Ms Humeniuk told Ukrainian television, after Kirill Stremousov, the Moscow-installed deputy chief of the regional administration, claimed that at least four civilians were killed.

Mr Stremousov said the attack occurred some 40 minutes after the curfew’s start. A further 13 people suffered wounds, Kherson’s top health official Vadim Ilmiyev said.

Among the dead and wounded were journalists from the Russia-created TV channel Tamvria, according to Mr Stremousov.

Earlier, Ukrainian strikes had made the Antonivskyi Bridge inoperable, prompting Russian authorities to set up ferry crossings and pontoon bridges to ferry supplies to Russian troops in Kherson, which sits on the Dnieper’s western bank.

Those crossings have been regularly targeted by Ukrainian rockets.

Russian-installed officials have urged residents to evacuate from Kherson city for their safety and to allow the military to build fortifications.

Ukraine’s military reported on Friday that bank employees, medical workers and teachers have started to be evacuated as the city’s infrastructure was wound down.

At least 15,000 residents of an expected 60,000 have already been relocated from the city and surrounding areas.

Kherson city had a pre-war population of about 284,000. It was one of the first urban areas Russia captured when it invaded Ukraine in February.

It remains the largest city it holds, and is a prime target for both sides because of its key industries and major river port.

Putin declared martial law in the the occupied regions of Kherson, Luhansk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions on Wednesday in an attempt to assert Russian authority in the annexed areas as he faced battlefield setbacks, a troubled troop mobilisation, increasing criticism at home and abroad, and international sanctions.

In recent days, Russia has been laying the groundwork to destroy the dam.

General Sergei Surovikin – Russia’s new supreme commander in Ukraine – has spoken to Russian media about what he called a ‘devastating strike’ on the Nova Kakhovka dam which he said was being plotted by Kyiv ‘s troops.

Surovikin, who has also been preparing the Russian public for a retreat from the region, said the blast would flood Kherson and cause widespread damage.

This is likely setting up for a ‘false-flag attack’ that would cover Russia’s retreat and prove a distraction from its latest battlefield humiliation, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War have concluded.

Breaching the dam would also be another blow to Ukraine’s battered energy grid, with people told to brace for rolling four-hour blackouts from today after a third of the country’s power plants were blown up in a little over a week.

Ukraine has already struck the dam several times with long-range rockets, because a key roadway runs over it which Russia was using to supply its troops.

But Kyiv’s attacks stopped once the roadway was unusable.

Meanwhile, cities across Ukraine began curbing electricity consumption ahead of winter Thursday as authorities warned that heavy damage to the country’s energy grid by Russian attacks would spark a new wave of refugees from the country.

‘Russia’s leadership has given the order to turn the energy system itself into a battlefield. The consequences of this are very dangerous, again for all of us in Europe,’ Zelensky said in an address to the EU council

Energy-saving measures were put in place across the country after Russian missile and drone strikes destroyed at least 30 percent of the country’s power stations in a week, according to authorities.

Following blackouts in parts of Kyiv overnight, the city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko urged businesses to limit screens and signage lights ‘as much as possible’.

‘Even small savings and a reduction in electricity consumption in every home will help stabilise the operation of the national energy system,’ he said.

Ukrainians responded defiantly.

‘It’s not going to change our attitude, maybe we will only hate them more,’ said Olga, a resident of Dnipro in central Ukraine who declined to give her last name.

‘I would rather sit in the cold with no water and electricity than be in Russia,’ she said.

People were rushing to buy auxiliary power supplies like generators and batteries, according to Kyrylo, an electronics vendor.

Speaking of the coming winter, he said: ‘I think that there will be nothing that we cannot survive.’

‘There will be some kind of heating in any case, and the fact that it will be 16 (degrees Celsius, or 61 Fahrenheit) instead of 20 doesn’t matter much. Just put on a thermal and socks,’ he said.

Russia has been using hundreds of missiles and suicide drones to attack Ukraine’s infrastructure in an apparent attempt to break civilian will to continue the war.

Such attacks are a war crime, under international law.

White House meanwhile said it had evidence of Iranians taking a direct role in the war, helping Russians direct their Iranian-made ‘kamikaze drones’ – which are destroyed in attacks on Ukrainian targets such as power stations.

‘Tehran is now directly engaged on the ground, and through the provision of weapons that are impacting civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine,’ said White House national security spokesman John Kirby.

He added that there was also concern Iran might supply surface-to-surface missiles to Russia for use in the war.

‘The United States is going to pursue all means to expose, deter and confront Iran’s provision of these munitions against the Ukrainian people,’ he added.

The European Union and United Kingdom announced sanctions on three Iranian generals and an arms firm accused of supplying Russia with drones.

However, bipartisan support for military aid to Ukraine is starting to wane in Washington, with Republicans signalling that funding could be cut after congressional midterm elections next month.

‘They said that if they win they’re not likely to fund, to continue to fund Ukraine,’ US President Joe Biden said while campaigning in Pennsylvania.

‘They have no sense of American foreign policy.’

In a separate evening address, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky warned ‘Russian terror will be directed at energy facilities’ and urged the country to conserve electricity starting at 7am.

He added that the government was ‘working on the creation of mobile power supply points for critical infrastructure in cities and villages’.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko asked residents of the capital not to turn on major electrical appliances.

He said: ‘Even a small saving and reduction of electricity consumption in each residence will help to stabilise the national energy system’s operation’.

Ukraine said it had downed ‘several Russian rockets’ over Kyiv in the third consecutive day of attacks, with Zelensky saying ten Iranian-made drones aimed at the city had also been destroyed Wednesday.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Thursday that Russian president Vladimir Putin was using energy and hunger as weapons but has failed to break the West’s unity and will not achieve his war aims through scorched earth tactics.

He told the German parliament that the country had freed itself from dependence on Russian gas but was working to bring energy prices down, including by securing new gas delivery contracts from other countries.

Little changed along the long front lines, where Russia has been sending many of the 200,000 troops newly called up to the fight.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday visited a training centre for mobilised troops south-east of Moscow where he embraced soldiers and fired a gun.

Some fighters opened their rucksacks to show him what they had been equipped with, and he asked one about his family, who replied he had a five-year-old daughter.

Putin hugged him and wished him ‘good luck.’

Meanwhile Russia continued to evacuate people from Kherson city as Ukrainian forces inched closer to the southern hub, in Moscow’s hands since the earliest days of the invasion in February.

Moscow-installed authorities in Kherson said that around 15,000 people have been moved out.

Russia’s Rossiya 24 TV showed images of people waiting to board ferries, unable to use bridges damaged by Ukraine.

Kirill Stremousov, a pro-Russian official, said on Telegram that the evacuations would give Russian forces more room to fight, and said they would not cede the city back to the Ukrainians.

‘Remember, nobody is going to give up Kherson,’ he said.

But Ukrainians said the exit of civilians from the area was in fact forced deportations to Russia.

The US-based Institute for the Study of War, in its daily analysis, said that as Ukrainian forces continue to close in on Kherson city, Russian authorities ‘are likely setting information conditions to justify planned Russian retreats and significant territorial losses.’

In preparation for a battle to control Kherson, Russia began evacuating 60,000 civilians on Wednesday which occupation officials said would last six days.

A Ukrainian representative called the evacuations the ‘equivalent of deportation’. The city has been in Moscow’s hands since the earliest days of the invasion.

Putin’s ‘aim is to create a kind of panic in Kherson and an image (to fuel) propaganda’, Sergiy Khlan said, adding Ukrainian forces were still pushing their counter-offensive southward.

He said the Russians were using evacuations as a pretext to justify ‘their withdrawal from Kherson and more generally from the right bank’ of the Dnieper River.

Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s national security and defence council, said Moscow’s move was criminal.

‘Putin’s martial law in the annexed regions of Ukraine is preparation for the mass deportation of the Ukrainian population to depressed areas of Russia in order to change the ethnic composition of the occupied territory,’ Mr Danilov said.

Pro-Russian officials in the town of Oleshky across the Dnieper said residents from Kherson were already arriving.

Russia’s Rossiya 24 TV showed images of people waiting to board ferries, unable to use bridges damaged by Ukraine.

Vladimir Saldo, the Kherson region’s Moscow-installed head, told Russian state television that the city’s administration would relocate east of the Dnieper.

Putin’s introduction of military rule in the Moscow-controlled territories also gives additional power to authorities in Russian regions bordering Ukraine to quash dissent.

‘We are working on solving very complex large-scale tasks to ensure security and protect the future of Russia,’ Putin said.

The devastation caused by Russia's plot to

Cutting the cord and being free to roam around all levels of the house is one of the main reasons to buy one of the best cordless vacuums. We’re big fans of this type of vacuum cleaner, not only because we don’t like to be held back, but also because we love how versatile, lightweight and easy-to-use they are.

Cordless vacuums and Black Friday

Just FYI, if you’re looking to buy a cordless vacuum cleaner then now might be the ideal time to start shopping around. Black Friday deals are a matter of weeks away, and we expect to see some fab Black Friday vacuum deals to roll out soon. You might even see some Black Friday Dyson vacuum deals, if you’re willing to splurge. For more affordable options, we also anticipate a lot of Black Friday Shark vacuum deals. Both these brands have highly sought after cordless vacuum cleaners which would be worth keeping an eye on.

While cordless vacuum cleaners are great, one of the key things we test – and one of the first things we look at in all the vac spec – is the runtime. The runtime is how long the battery will last before it needs another charge. There’s nothing more annoying than a vacuum cleaner stopping dead while you’re in the middle of vacuuming the carpets upstairs, or when you’ve almost finished banishing the crumbs to the dust canister in the car which is parked down the road. These are trivial problems compared to some, of course, but when a vacuum that isn’t tethered to the mains power dies on you during a cleaning mission, it is a problem all the same.

There are some vacuum cleaning brands which sell separate batteries, meaning that you can buy an additional battery and give yourself double the available power. Some even include a spare battery as standard, effectively turning a 60-minute runtime into 120 minutes.

This sounds like a dream: an answer to a vacuum cleaning woe. But what’s the reality of this? Well, let me share…

Oh, the cordless vacuum cleaner. They come in very different shapes, sizes and colors, with some being far more technical than other simpler, yet just as effective, models. Those with the more premium price tag generally come with more features, which makes sense, and some have more battery power and / or more battery options.

Take the Dyson V15 Detect, for example. There’s a lot going on with it, as we found out when testing it for our Dyson V15 Detect review. For instance, it has a High-Torque cleaning head, that when used on Auto Mode will adjust the power to suit the type of floor you’re cleaning; clever. It also has a Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head, which has a soft brush bar to ensure hard floors aren’t damaged. What’s more, it features a class 1 laser diode (so it’s safe for humans and pets) mounted at an angle of 1.5 degrees and 7.2mm off the ground, which projects a beam of green light in front of the cleaning head to highlight microscopic dust particles. There’s also a color LCD display, which shows level of dust collected and remaining runtime.

In short, it’s a feature-packed device – and therefore one that needs a lot of power. Dyson claims that the battery will last up to 60 minutes on the lowest-power, Eco, setting, and that’s what we found in our testing: it keep going for 59 minutes before it needed recharging.

While 60 minutes might sound like a lot, some people might need more. And though the battery can be swapped out to double your runtime, that will cost you extra – making an already eye-wateringly expensive vacuum cleaner even pricier.

Of course, if you do end up getting a second battery, you’ll then need to ensure that you keep it charged up at all times, so that you can quickly swap it out if the vac dies mid-cleaning. You’ll also need to figure out how to take the depleted battery out and replace it with the new battery. This may or may not be a massive issue for you, but it’s always worth doing some prep.

I’ve also been testing the Miele Triflex HX2 Pro cordless vacuum cleaner recently. This has a slightly lower spec than the Dyson above, but is a really robust, versatile and powerful model which deals expertly with any small debris in its path.

Unlike the Dyson, this comes with two batteries as standard. Miele claims that each one provides a 60-minute runtime, so two batteries will obviously give you 120 minutes. This sounds mega, and if you don’t compare the Miele HX2 range beforehand, you’ll probably feel like you’re getting a good deal.

However, it’s not quite as simple as that. In a nutshell, you’re paying an extra £200 for this extra battery when compared to the Miele HX2 Cat&Dog, which has only one but which is cheaper by that amount. You may find that’s a reasonable compromise, because you won’t need to find and buy an additional battery.

I found that on the HX2 Pro I didn’t achieve anywhere close to the 60-minute runtime when flicking between the ‘Eco’ and ‘Max’ settings; I was lucky to get 35 minutes in that case. You’ll be closer to reaching the max runtime on the ‘Min’ setting, but that won’t be much help if you have some real heavy-duty cleaning to do.

That’s where the second battery could come in handy, then, but unfortunately when I came to swap to the new one, I found that it wasn’t charged; not ideal, because it meant that I needed to reschedule the vacuum cleaning chore until that was done.

And don’t go thinking that’s a quick process, either. The Miele HX2 models typically need 4hrs to juice up; the Dyson V15 Detect takes 5hrs. If you find out the second battery is flat mid-clean, as I do, you’re in for a lengthy wait.

Of course that’s just user error on my part, but it’s something to be aware of if you want to see the benefit of the dual-battery vacuum cleaner approach. It’s a great option in theory, but you’ll need to plan ahead – and have deep pockets – to make it worthwhile.

Cutting the cord and being free to

Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company have unveiled the first trailer for their faith-based film Jesus Revolution, starring Joel Courtney (The Kissing Booth franchise), Jonathan Roumie (The Chosen) and Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), which is slated for a wide theatrical release on February 24th, on the heels of a special preview event set for the 22nd.

The film directed by Jon Erwin (I Can Only Imagine, American Underdog) and Brent McCorkle (Unconditional) tells the true story of a divided moment in time when people came together by checking their preconceptions at the door – and formed a movement by listening to each other, looking beyond their own beliefs.

In the 1970s, young Greg Laurie (Courtney) is searching for all the right things in all the wrong places – until he meets Lonnie Frisbee (Roumie), a charismatic hippie-street-preacher. Together with Pastor Chuck Smith (Grammer), they open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to an unexpected revival of radical and newfound love, leading to what Time magazine dubbed a “Jesus Revolution.”

The film written by Erwin and Jon Gunn also stars Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Anna Grace Barlow, DeVon Franklin, Ally Ioannides, Julia Campbell, Nic Bishop and Jolie Jenkins. Kevin Downes (I Can Only Imagine, American Underdog) and Jon and Andrew Erwin produced it alongside Josh Walsh (The Jesus Music) and Daryl Lefever (Woodlawn).

Jesus Revolution will open against the Elizabeth Banks-directed Universal thriller Cocaine Bear and Sony’s thriller Searching 2. Check the new film’s trailer out by clicking above.

Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company have unveiled

Formula 1 races will continue on ESPN Networks in the United States through the 2025 season.

A new multi-year contract renewal was announced in Austin at the second of two US stops for F1 during the 2022 season.

Under the renewal, at least 16 races will air on ABC and ESPN each season, more than in the previous five years since F1 returned to ESPN networks in 2018. Also, all race telecasts on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 will continue the commercial-free presentation used over the past five seasons.

In what may be a harbinger of an as-yet unannounced but long-rumored online gambling venture, the new agreement also gives ESPN flexibility to roll out additional ways for US fans to explore F1 content over the next three years, including on ESPN+. The companies said details on that are to be announced later.

“Formula 1 and ESPN have been a strong and successful team and we’re delighted to extend our relationship,” said Burke Magnus, ESPN President, Programming and Original Content. “We look forward to serving fans in some new and innovative ways in the next three years as we continue to bring the reach and relevance of the Walt Disney Company networks and platforms to Formula 1.”

After setting a record in 2021 for the most-viewed F1 season on US television, with an average of 949,000 viewers per race, the average has moved into seven figures in 2022. Through 18 races, live F1 telecasts are averaging 1.2 million viewers on ESPN networks – with multiple events attracting race-record television audiences.

Earlier this year, the telecast of the inaugural Miami Grand Prix on ABC generated an average viewership of 2.6 million, the largest US audience on record for a live F1 race.

“We are delighted to announce that our partnership with ESPN will continue,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO at Formula 1. “Formula 1 has seen incredible growth in the United States with sold out events and record television audiences, and the addition of Las Vegas to the calendar next season, alongside Austin and Miami, will see us host three spectacular races there. The ESPN networks have played a huge part in that growth with their dedicated quality coverage. We are excited to expand our relationship and continue to bring the passion and excitement of Formula 1 to our viewers in the US together.”

“After Formula 1 returned to the ESPN networks five years ago, the popularity of the sport has grown impressively,” said Ian Holmes, Director of Media Rights and Content Creation, Formula 1. “The extension and expansion of our partnership is a reflection of exciting times ahead and a result of our shared desire to bring Formula 1 to as broad and diverse an audience as possible in the U.S. The popular commercial-free broadcasts ensure that viewers continue to engage with F1 before, during and after the race. From next year we will have six races in the Americas, which means more favorable time zones to fans in the region, making the Formula 1 offering more compelling than ever.”

All race weekends will continue to include live telecasts of all three practice sessions and qualifying (including the F1 Sprint) as well as pre-race and post-race coverage. The new agreement includes an increased focus on qualifying, with more sessions airing on ESPN or ESPN2.

ESPN Deportes will continue as the Spanish-language home of F1 in the US, and ESPN’s coverage of F1 includes a dedicated website that reports on the championship year-round.

In addition, ESPN studio shows including SportsCenter will continue on-site coverage from races in the US, including the new event in Las Vegas for 2023, with coverage at other races potentially added. ESPN also will be creating additional ancillary programming on its platforms to support its F1 coverage over the next three years.

During each of the five seasons that F1 has been on ESPN networks since its return, the amount of F1 content on ESPN television and digital platforms has steadily increased. This year, the Sky Sports F1 programs Ted’s Qualifying Notebook and Ted’s Race Notebook were added, airing on ESPN3 during race weekends, and the video podcast program Unlapped began appearing on the ESPN YouTube channel.

Formula 1 returned to its original US television home in 2018 – the first race aired in the country was on ABC in 1962. F1 races also aired on ESPN from 1984-1997.

Sunday’s U.S. Grand Prix will air live on ABC with coverage beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET. The next event in the 2022 F1 season is the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, Oct. 30. The race will air live on ESPN at 3:55 p.m. ET.
