The March 14 match-up between the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers will be broadcast in a new way that’s never been seen before in the history of the NHL, and it’ll look like a video game. ESPN, Disney, and the NHL have partnered for a new type of broadcast, which is a real hockey game but recreated inside a virtual stadium with 3D animated characters based on the Disney animated series Big City Greens.

How does it work? Player- and puck-tracking data will beam from the site of the game, Madison Square Garden, to create this new type of broadcast that aims to help grow the appeal of the NHL. Check out the video below to get a sneak peek at what the broadcast will look like, including a 3D chicken as a referee.

In addition to actual players like Alexander Ovechkin of the Capitals and Patrick Kane of the Rangers getting turned into 3D animated player models, the ice will be populated with Big City Greens characters. Gramma Alice and her son Bill will play the goalies, while Cricket Green will become a player on the Rangers and Tilly Green will play a Capitals skater.

ESPN’s real human commentators Drew Carter and Kevin Weekes will wear motion-capture suits, with their avatars appearing during the broadcast as 3D characters. The referee will be a chicken. He will drop the puck, fly away, and then magically appear for the next faceoff.

The Big City Greens Classic, as it’s called, will air March 14 at 7 PM ET on ESPN+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney+. If this all sounds too weird and overwhelming, the traditional broadcast will air normally on ESPN and ESPN+.

Check out ESPN’s in-depth story about the Big City Greens Classic to see how it all came together.

Jose Pozo, director of the celebrated Spanish short “Plastic Killer,” is traveling to the Western U.S. for his next feature film, “Unusual Cowboys,” which he plans to shoot this year.

The story follows Milton, a peaceful rancher and occasional musician who loses his daughter in a traffic accident. Her death has a further tragic impact on Milton’s life, leading him to sell his ranch and travel to Montana in search of Caleb, the man who failed to help his daughter in the accident.

It’s a film about two men who in other circumstances could have been good friends. Although separated by terrible circumstances, they share a common passion: Music.

Pozo is set to shoot the film later this year in Lockhart, Texas, and Butte, Montana, with additional sequences planned in Colorado and Wyoming.

The project garnered recognition in the 2020 Big Break Screenwriting Contest, where it landed in the top five in the drama category.

Producing the film are Roger Corbi and Yan Fisher-Romanovsky of FishCorb Films and David Ortiz of Arlong Productions along with Pozo, who is associate producing via his Andorra-based Imminent Produccions.

The feature follows his award-winning short “Plastic Killer,” a black comedy about a troubled woman in Madrid, which premiered last year at the Medina Film Festival in Spain and went on to screen in Malaga. It was one of four Spanish works shortlisted for this year’s live-action short film Oscar.

The film stars Laura Gómez-Lacueva as Amparo, who lives in an abandoned haberdashery with Carmela, a plastic bag that she believes to be her daughter. When a neighbor suffers a mysterious mishap, Amparo becomes a suspect. José Mota and Elisabet Terri also star.

For Pozo, who wrote and directed the film based on an idea by Rafael De Mateo, making “Plastic Killer” was a welcomed return to the director’s chair.

“I have spent most of the last few years as a producer, basically for other directors’ projects,” Pozo told Variety. “I had the need to shoot as an auteur, and although I had previously directed four feature films, I wanted to shoot something powerful, different from everything I had done before.”

Pozo came across the story idea and found inspiration in the concept itself. “I immediately imagined the universe that could be created through it: The woman living alone with the plastic bag, a true reflection of the loneliness in which many people are forced to survive without affection; the hypocritical ecologist who makes her life impossible for going shopping with a polyethylene bag, but then uses all kinds of plastic accessories; the inspector with rare diseases, which hinder his insight.

“All this told in the key of black comedy, where the situations are the ones that generate humor, but the interpretations are solid and dramatic. For me, this is the key to its success.”

In skewering the hypocrisy of some environmentalists, Pozo is also holding up a mirror to society.

“I believe that in this matter we humans act with hypocrisy in general. Most of us try to be at peace with this otherwise very necessary environmental movement. We recycle whenever we can, and we don’t throw anything on the ground that could end up in our rivers or our seas. But for some reason millions of metric tons end up littering them, and plastics don’t walk on their own; it takes human interaction.

“This is the message of ‘Plastic Killer.’ The problem is not the generation of plastics, it’s the misuse by humans.”

“Plastic Killer” was produced by Imminent Produccions and Arlong Productions.

Having also directed animated features, such as the Goya-winning “El Cid: La Leyenda” (2003) and “Donkey Xote” (2007), Pozo has another animated project in the works but is currently focusing on live-action.

Working on narrative features, he added, is much more personal than animation: it offers “tangible contact with actors and film crews, where you can transmit and interact more effectively. I feel more comfortable with this.”

EXCLUSIVE: Maybe it’s the cold. Or the relatively few hours of daylight in wintertime. Or perhaps a genetic predisposition. Whatever the case, Sweden and melancholia have become synonymous over time, a national trait explored so memorably in cinema by Ingmar Bergman and in other artforms, like sculpture. Marie-Louise Ekman’s 1,300-pound iron statue called “The Swedish Melancholy,” on display in the city of Linköping, depicts a man in sweater and cap crying actual tears (well, rivulets supplied through internal water pipes).

Sweden’s essential melancholy is explored anew in the artform of documentary film, in Vintersaga, which makes its world premiere this Sunday at the CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen, Denmark. Carl Olsson directed the documentary, which features dozens of characters who embody, in one way or another, the Swedish soul. We have your first look at the film in the clip above.

“Capturing contemporary Sweden in its diversity and its contradictions,” the film’s logline states, “Vintersaga uses 24 meticulously framed scenes from the country’s walks of life to create a bitter-sweet and richly detailed panorama of the country’s melancholy soul, organized around the verses of Swedish musician and artist Ted Ström’s eponymous song from 1984.”

Ginestra Film

Vintersaga is produced by Ginestra Film/Antonio Russo Merenda in co-production with Film iVäst/Kristina Börjeson & Jenny Luukkonen, Filmpool Nord/Katja Härkönen, Final Cut forReal/Anne Köhncke.

“Apart from being a somewhat self-defining part of Scandinavian mentality, melancholy is a multifaceted term as it embraces feelings that are in fact contradictory,” Olsson notes in a director’s statement. “There is sadness, but also a kind of romantic beauty. A memory of a deceased friend can be painful, but at the same time we do not want to let it go. Melancholy as a concept has complexity enough to generate diverse interpretations, which makes it interesting to work with in an artistic context.”

Olsson continues, “Even though Vintersaga is portraying parts of the lives of its 55 participants, it is to me a very personal film. The scenes and situations of the film are inspired by my own experience growing up in Sweden. Just like the characters in the film, I have also been freezing on rainy football fields, had deep conversations on the balcony at home parties or, in lack of places to go, hung out in underpasses in the suburbs. So with the help of their own lives, the participants have been helping me to create my personal and subjective portrait of my home country.”

Vintersaga is an acquisition title out of CPH:DOX, with international sales being handled by CAT&Docs. The film is directed by Olsson directs and produced by Antonio Russo Merenda. Cinematography is by Mathias Døcker; the editor is Sofie Steenberger. The original score is by Ted Ström (composer of the 1984 title song), Albin Ström & Johan Ström. The film’s poster image comes from a painting by Ted Ström.

In the exclusive clip above, a couple of bakery workers take a break outside their workplace. One of them says quietly, “Nobody cares about me and I don’t care about them. I’ve explained and explained, but no one tries to understand.” How’s that for melancholy?

EXCLUSIVE: Maybe it’s the cold. Or the

“I don’t think Nick or Jess would ever fall out of the commitment to do this thing together,” Johnson said during 2023 SXSW.

Jake Johnson is vowing that there is no new unexpected ending to “New Girl.”

The heartwarming finale that saw Johnson’s Nick end up with Jess, played by Zooey Deschanel, would still stand if there was ever a reunion or revival, Johnson said during a 2023 SXSW panel. The “Self Reliance” director noted that Nick and Jess would not break up since fans last saw the characters in 2018.

“I think they would definitely make it work. I don’t think they would break up,” Johnson said. “They have a kid, they’re jumping around on that bed, you guys know it way more than me. I don’t think Nick or Jess would ever fall out of the commitment to do this thing together.”

He continued, “Liz Merriweather has created a very optimistic show, it’s people who are sweet to each other. So if it’s real and they’re alive, they’re all still together. They’re just a little fatter, besides Schmidt, the hair is a little thinner besides Schmidt…If we did a reunion, Schmidt needs to be in a toupee.”

Schmidt was portrayed by Max Greenfield on the FOX sitcom that co-starred Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone. The series was nominated for five Emmy Awards between 2011 and 2018, and was streaming on Netflix from 2013 to 2023. “New Girl” will be moving to Hulu and Peacock starting April 17.

Johnson elsewhere in his SXSW keynote discussion Monday said that he was thrilled and surprised to see that new generations of audiences have discovered “New Girl” on streaming well after it aired, mentioning that while loads of people watched the show’s pilot and followed it for its first two seasons, many audiences fell off as it continued. Yet Johnson pointed out that viewers who are only age 19 are responding even stronger to a show that’s now been off the air for five years.

But he also joked that part of the reason he wanted to make his directorial debut “Self Reliance,” a movie rather than a show, is because he wanted to truly engage audiences rather than have it just be something they watch and consume in the background.

“‘Hey, I love “New Girl,” I go, ‘Thanks,’” Johnson said of interacting with fans. “‘Yeah, it’s the best, I can do my laundry, I have you on in the background,’” he sarcastically added of audiences describing binging the series in the background. “‘You’re just a voice in our house in the background, always.’ ‘Thanks, nice to see you guys.’”

While Jess and Nick are a beloved rom-com couple that have gotten a happy ending, they’re apparently one of the few.

“The Devil Wears Prada” screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna revealed that if the film were to have a follow-up, Anne Hathaway’s iconic character Andy Sachs would “definitely not” still be dating Adrian Grenier’s unsupportive chef Nate.

“Andy and Nate are definitely not together,” Brosh McKenna said earlier this year. “That much I can tell you.”

The “Your Place or Mine” director noted that the “27 Dresses” couple portrayed by James Marsden and Katherine Heigl would most likely go their separate ways as well.

“I, controversially, am not sure that Jane and Kevin from ’27 Dresses’ are still married. Just a thought,” she told Variety. “I mean, there was a lot of romantic idealization — I don’t really feel like they got the chance to know each other. That was a big ass wedding. I’m concerned.”

With historic wins like Best Actress, Asian film artists made a lot of progress at the 2023 Oscars, but there is still much work to do to keep the Academy Awards more inclusive.

To have a film centered on a Chinese American family, and more specifically the conflict between an immigrant mother and her queer daughter, win the Oscar for Best Picture is undeniably a sign of progress in the movement to get the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize more art that comes from people from marginalized backgrounds.

On Sunday night, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” made Academy Awards history on multiple fronts, most of all with lead Michelle Yeoh becoming the first Asian woman to ever win Best Actress. Her victory ended a 21 year streak of all white winners since African American actress Halle Berry became the first woman of color to win the award in 2002. Similarly, her co-star Ke Huy Quan became the second Asian man to win Best Supporting Actor, nearly 40 years after “The Killing Fields” star Haing S. Ngor became the first.

It is important to highlight the huge gaps of time between those wins, because it helps illustrate why “Everything Everywhere All at Once” co-director Dan Kwan and producer Jonathan Wang’s Best Picture win are notable in juxtaposition. Receiving the Oscar alongside their creative partner Daniel Scheinert (who also won Best Director and Best Original Screenplay Oscars with Kwan) made them the third set of Asian producers to ever win the Oscar. The first were Bong Joon-ho and Kwak Sin-ae winning for “Parasite” three years ago. The second was Chloé Zhao in 2021.

Those pushing for more diversity at the Oscars are not infatuated by all the firsts in the major categories. 95 years into an awards show it should not be a novelty for a group of people that encompass nearly 12 percent of the population in Los Angeles to win on Hollywood’s biggest night. The actual result that critics of the Academy are after is a world where people from marginalized backgrounds are given equitable consideration in every category, and that those particular nominees would not have to feel the odds so strongly stacked against them winning. Those achievements in quick succession provide some hope that minority producers will be firmly in the mix for the biggest award of the night for many more Oscars to come, rather than be excluded for decades at a time.

Adding to what was a banner night for Asian talent is “The Elephant Whisperers” winning Best Documentary Short, making the director Kartiki Gonsalves and producer Guneet Monga the first Indian filmmakers to ever receive a competitive Oscar. Their fellow countrymen M. M. Keeravani and Chandrabose also became the second-ever Indian winners for Best Original Song, for “Naatu Naatu” from Tollywood phenomenon “RRR.”

Elsewhere, the fact that Ruth E. Carter, the first Black person to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design, became the first Black woman to win two Oscars (both for her work on the “Black Panther” films) come as a surprise when one thinks of stars like Whoopi Goldberg and Viola Davis, who have become staples at the Oscars.

Overall, there is still so much more room for the Oscars to grow into a more inclusive awards show. For example, a Latina still has never won Best Actress. But the last win to highlight, that shows how talent from marginalized backgrounds still have room to make Oscar history not tied to their identity, is Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro receiving an Oscar for his 2022 stop-motion animated musical “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” and therefore becoming the first person ever to win Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Animated Feature.

Everyone knows writing and acting are two significant parts of success when producing a movie. However, the sets and locations can make all the difference for a viewer.

How do filmmakers pick their sites? They send scouts to locations worldwide and gauge where the best places are for their films. Use this guide for seven secrets in smart location scouting.

1. Consider the Film

The first step in location scouting is to consider the type of film you’re producing. Use the script to determine the right filming sites. Plots based on past centuries will be much harder to plan for, especially when going back several decades or centuries.

For example, finding architecture that authentically resembles the Renaissance can get quite tricky. Often, location scouts have to get creative when searching for film locations.

2. Be Logical

Whatever location you need, you’ll want to be logical with your choice. For example, scouts should choose rural areas relatively close to a city for the convenience of the cast and crew. Establish a central hub for everybody working on the set and keep all filming sites near this location for everybody’s ease.

Plus, making a film can be unpredictable. A cast member may have an injury or you miss the limited time available for filming. Pick sites that are logical for filming. The cast and crew are already working long days — you don’t want to work them any harder than necessary. Filmmakers should also account for transporting actors and equipment to and from filming locations.

3. Research the Area

Once you’ve decided on a location, it’s time to research. Scouts should leave no stone unturned when researching — it may be necessary to exhaust multiple options in the surrounding area. You don’t have to stick with the first location you find. Providing several choices is wise to ensure the crew gets the best shots possible.

For example, say you need a garden scene, and you select Philadelphia as the location. The City of Brotherly Love has numerous gardens throughout the metropolitan area. Bartram’s Garden would be an excellent filming location, but other sites like the Nemours Mansion and Longwood Gardens may make more sense for the movie.

4. Visit the Location

Research is vital for film scouting, but someone will need to visit the location to gauge the land accurately. Pictures can help you see the landscape, but the photographs may be old. Seeing the site in person provides a 3D view and sparks ideas for filming. Sometimes, the preferred location isn’t what you thought it would be, requiring the team to use a backup plan.

When a scout visits the location, they should take detailed notes of everything. In movies, the tiny details are significant, so be vigilant of every nook and cranny in a building and outdoor setting. It’s also wise to check out the filming site throughout the day. It may look adequate with the morning light, but how does that change when it’s the afternoon and closer to sunset? The lighting can positively or negatively affect the scenes filmed in this location.

5. Utilize Public Records

After finding the best locations for a movie, filmmakers need to acquire permission from the property owner before they can set up shop and start filming. You’ll also likely need a permit from the city or state you’re filming in. To figure out the permit process or who the crew needs to contact to get permission, look to public records.

In the U.S., many states have databases to show who owns what properties. The details can be complicated, with different companies holding various buildings in an area. Filmmakers can use the internet to find the information they need. For example, Miami-Dade County in Florida allows you to research properties, see ownership and assessments and more.

6. Scout for Other Movies

When scouting for a movie, your mind is likely laser-focused on the film you’re producing. Scouted locations might not work out for this film, but don’t disregard them forever. Keep every contact you acquire in a file because you never know when you’ll need it later.

Even if it’s a business card from a bar, keep it handy for future films. You or a friend in the industry may need the location later.

7. Remember, Less Is More

Independent films often have a tight budget, meaning every dollar matters regarding production. Filmmakers may have ideas for numerous scenes shot in various locations, but it can be significantly easier to select one site to shoot most of your settings.

Remember that less is more in the film industry. The best option for your budget is to film all the scenes in one location, especially if your movie requires international travel for the crew.

Scouting Locations for an Independent Film

The scenery can make or break a movie. Films like “Lawrence of Arabia” and “The Lord of the Rings” are renowned for their beautiful location shots.

If you’re producing an independent film, location scouting is one of the most critical parts of developing the movie. You’ll need to be creative and logical to consider the needs of your film, cast and crew.

New polling results suggest Canadians are largely indifferent to King Charles, and more than half believe his May 6 coronation is the right time for the country to reconsider its ties with the monarchy.

The web survey of 1,544 adults released Tuesday by market research firm Leger indicates many Canadians are greeting the ascension of Charles to the throne with a shrug.

Only 12 per cent of respondents said it was good news that Charles is now King, compared to 14 per cent who said it was bad news and 67 per cent who were indifferent.

Only 13 per cent of those surveyed said they felt a personal attachment to the monarchy, compared with 81 per cent who didn’t.

Majority of Canadians want referendum on monarchy ties after queen’s death: poll

The survey found the level of attachment to the monarchy has dropped since the days immediately following Queen Elizabeth’s death last September, when 19 per cent said they felt an attachment and 77 per cent said they didn’t. Indifference to Charles has also risen in the same period.

A majority of respondents said it’s the right time for Canada to reconsider its ties with the monarchy, with 56 per cent in favour and 44 against.

Anti-monarchy sentiment was strongest in Quebec, where 71 per cent said it was time to reconsider ties.

Indifference to Charles’ ascension to the throne spanned all age groups and regions of the country, although the new monarch was viewed more favourably in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and among Canadians aged 55 and older. Once again, the lowest level of positive reviews was in Quebec, where only seven per cent agreed it was a good thing that Charles is King.

King Charles’ coronation will take place May 6 at Westminster Abbey and will be marked by a procession, a concert at Windsor Castle and other events.

While 44 per cent of respondents said they were aware of the event, 73 per cent said they weren’t interested. Twenty-seven per cent of respondents expressed interest, but only six per cent said they were very interested.

Sixty per cent of respondents said they were not going to watch television or video coverage, compared to 17 per cent who said they would and 23 per cent who weren’t sure.

Polling was done between March 10 and March 12. A margin of error can’t be assigned to the survey because it was conducted online and not at random, but Leger says the margin of error for a comparable random, or probability, sampling would be 2.49 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The Google Pixel 7a might have been fully leaked, several weeks before Google is expected to officially announce the phone.

While the company has yet to confirm that it’s working on a follow-up to the Google Pixel 6a and continue its Pixel a line of phones – a line that’s more budget-friendly and less technically impressive than the flagship Google Pixel line – multiple signs suggest that it’s working on a Pixel 7a. Specs for the rumored phone were teased back in November last year, with more details and images leaking a few days ago.

Now, more leaks have surfaced, with an individual claiming to have got their hands on a developer unit of the Pixel 7a (via Zing News (opens in new tab)). Based on these leaks the device appears to be a fusion of the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7. The Pixel 7’s iconic metal camera bar makes a return, but the cameras themselves are different, with the 50MP main camera replaced by a 12MP one. The leaked phone also appears to have a 6.1-inch 90Hz display and lacks a headphone jack.

Most of these details track with what others have claimed are details of the device, except for the dual 12MP camera setup – previous leaks had suggested we’d see the 50MP camera upgraded to a 64MP snapper, though admittedly that seemed unlikely; budget-friendly handsets typically don’t surpass the same brand’s flagships, especially not their cameras.

An image said to show the Google Pixel 7a shared by Zing News (Image credit: Zing News)

Leakier than a sieve

We should always take leaks with a pinch of salt – and as convincing as the leaks here look there’s always a chance they’re part of an elaborate hoax – but leaks of this nature are nothing new for the Google Pixel line of phones.

The Google Pixel 7 had its specs leaked well ahead of its launch, and Google Pixel 6a promo images gave us a great look at the device’s upcoming hardware and software before it hit shelves too. The Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 5 were both spoiled by leaks, and the Google Pixel 4 was spotted in the wild before it could be announced too.

As such, it wouldn’t be surprising if this Google Pixel 7a leak turns out to be completely real, it would certainly be par for the course. As always we’ll have to wait and see what Google unveils for the phone, with an announcement expected for Google I/O 2023 in May based on the timing of previous Pixel announcements.

Lobbying typically gets a bad rap, conjuring images of backdoor deals corrupting politicians with money. But over in Finland, a creative agency challenged these norms with an unusual lobbying campaign using experiential marketing.

Unlike many lobbing efforts that happen behind closed doors, the campaign for Finnish retail giant S Group garnered national media attention and galvanized supporters and critics across the country. It was created by United Imaginations, an agency founded last year by three former TBWA\Helsinki executives.

The context is this: Finland’s pharmacy market is one of the strictest and monopolized in the European Union. Medicines, including cold medicines or painkillers, are only allowed to be sold at privately-owned community pharmacies.

S-Group, Finland’s largest retail chain, is lobbying for a system akin to other European countries, where medicines could be sold in retail chains, supermarkets and via online pharmacies (while still under the supervision of professional pharmacists). The retailer said in a statement that it “wants Finnish consumers to benefit from more affordable medicines, better opening hours and new pharmacy services.”

Using experiential techniques

To challenge the status quo, S Group enlisted United Imaginations, which decided to bring this debate to the public. The agency built a model pharmacy in the heart of Finnish capital Helsinki.

In the prototype pharmacy, people can browse the shelves and experience first-hand a different way of accessing medicines–thus drawing their own conclusions about whether to change the system.

“S Group wanted to rethink what lobbying could be in a modern society open to debate and new perspectives,” said Jyrki Poutanen, creative director and founding member of United Imaginations. “No hiding behind gimmicky messages, no hush-hush about their purpose. They wanted to be completely open about their role in the conversation.”

Visitors could browse the prototype pharmacy and decide for themselves whether the country needed itUnited Imaginations

The campaign took a turn when a critic noticed a typo on a package of fake vitamin D, which used the incorrect unit of micrograms instead of milligrams. The error sparked a debate in Finnish media, with the opposition arguing that supermarkets had no right to sell any type of medicine.

But that mistake, which was then fixed, ended up bringing more visibility to the campaign. The model pharmacy became headline news in Finland and started a national conversation about having a more open and competitive pharmacy market.

Baaghi 3

Cast: Tiger Shroff, Shraddha Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh

Director: Ahmed Khan

Ahmed Khan is back with Baaghi 3, an action drama with two brothers Ronnie (Tiger Shroff) and Vikram (Riteish Deshmukh) in the mix. As it turns out, Ronnie, the younger one is a tough guy while the elder brother Vikram, a bit of a wimpy kid. Fittingly they are sons to an upright cop (Jackie Shroff), who dies while in action in the line of duty. No surprise then that Ronnie is the one entrusted with the task of looking after Vikram by their father. In a clever twist, the Vikram joins the police force with a little help from his brother Ronnie. Their escapades together of mostly roughing up the baddies gets Vikram the honours for a while but eventually lands him in hot water.

Baaghi 3 is an adaptation of Tamil film Vettai starring R. Madhavan and Arya. The story is a hark back to old- fashioned style Hindi cinema, but Khan and producer Sajid Nadiadwala pack it with twists that attempt bringing a hint of freshness into the tried and tested format.

However, a foreign locale, bone-crunching scenes one after another, and piling up choppers instead of cars do not make an entertaining film. Farhad Samji’s script lacks the balance of emotion and action required in an overarching formula that the film rests on. Outlandish feats that sometimes delight, do not come to the rescue in this one. That Ronnie is a one-man army who even in Syria–where he has never set foot before until he reaches there to rescue his brother– can accomplish what America, Russia, and Israel have failed to do, feels over the top! After a point the one-sided antics of our hero beating an army of terrorists lead by their mastermind Abu Jalal (Jameel Khoury), prove tedious and tiring.

Tiger Shroff, as always is sincere and terrific when it comes to the action scenes, but now after a number of hits under his belt, he needs to raise the bar a few notches on the histrionics as well. Riteish Deshmukh lands the smaller part and clearly, one, which is vastly underwritten. Given his comic flair, giving Deshmukh a meatier role would have certainly made the film a lot more enjoyable. War, Tiger Shroff’s most recent outing in which he teamed up with Hrithik Roshan is a good example of combining two actors effectively in an action story. Baaghi 3, despite its entertaining source material, fails to do that.

Sharddha Kapoor and Ankita Lokhande too have precious little to do besides playing cheerleaders and assistants to the men in question. Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma in the supporting cast suffer the same fate.

Director Ahmed Khan obviously has a talent for helming big actioners, but Baaghi 3 certainly does not qualify as his best. That being said, this is a film obviously aimed at the single screen audience and given Tiger Shroff’s loyal following, it may just work the box-office numbers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjRgIQNpVGE/default.jpg

It’s a pity that despite its gravity-defying stunts and impressive firepower, Baaghi 3, the third edition of a successful franchise ends not in a bang but a whimper.

The Weasel is ready for his own Hollywood comeback.

This year’s Oscars was marked by being the year of the comeback. Brendan Fraser won the lead actor category for his role in “The Whale” after years away from the spotlight. And Ke Huy Quan, who was a child star, returned to Hollywood after a 20-year hiatus, winning the Oscar for his supporting role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

The two acted alongside each other in the 1992 comedy “Encino Man,” and Jimmy Kimmel pointed out that fun Hollywood fact in his opening monologue at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday night.

“Two actors from ‘Encino Man’ are nominated for Oscars,” Kimmel said. “What an incredible night this must be for the two of you, and what a difficult night it must be for Pauly Shore.”

Well, Pauly Shore, who also starred in “Encino Man,” was watching — the stand-up comedian had been publicly rooting for his old co-stars in the week leading up to the big event — and he had a few things to say about being the butt of an Oscars joke.

“We love to hate people when they’re on top. People wanted to smash me down and they did,” Shore, 55, told Page Six. “I was always nice to everyone, always cool, I put my heart into all my films.

“You’re buying and selling a human being,” he added of working in the entertainment industry. “Human beings have feelings, it’s not like selling real estate.”

Before the ceremony, Shore posted old shots of Fraser and Quan on Instagram with encouraging captions, “So very proud of Brendan Fraser and @KeHuyQuan Truly truly happy. Must be an amazing feeling to be knighted with @TheAcademy pixie dust. I’ll be rooting for both of you guys big time. Your old buddy, Stoney Brown from Encino Man, Pauly Shore,” he wrote. “Love you both, and knock ‘em dead this Sunday night.”

The ’90s comedy star best known for “Jury Duty,” “Bio-Dome” and, of course, “Encino Man,” told Page Six that he was happy for his old buddies. But he also opened up about how sitting on the sidelines can be bittersweet.

“I do truly miss acting and I miss being on set … hopefully it happens. … [I]t’s about just dreaming and hoping,” he said. “People are always like, ‘We want you back!’”

Shore is hoping for his chance to surprise audiences with something they haven’t seen from him. And waiting for the call that will allow him to do so.

“The directors and producers are the ones with the vision. Someone out there will say, ‘You know what, we’re going to do something you wouldn’t expect — we’ll put Pauly in this role that no one would expect,’” Shore said. “That’s where my heart is.

“I am not going to stop,” he continued. “I’m going to keep going. I know I’m going to get that call, and get that opportunity. That’s what’s it about.”

On Monday, Shore posted a video clip of Kimmel’s monolgue on Instagram with the caption, “I don’t know if you guys saw the Oscars last night, but @jimmykimmel poked fun at me in the monologue. If you haven’t checked it out, watch this clip. Very funny — I really loved it. But what I REALLY loved is that my old buddies from back in the day, Brendan Fraser and @KeHuyQuan, took home the Oscars. What a story. I mean really guys, what a f— story.

“If we can all learn something from this, never quit on your dreams. Keep dreaming, work hard, and put in the time, and if your stars line up and you’re in the entertainment business, one day Hollywood will hit you in the head with the pixie dust like it did for Brendan and Ke.”

Hello everyone, We are planning a scheduled

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for the Gotham Knights premiere. The pilot episode of Gotham Knights confirms that the Batman of this reality broke his classic rule and killed The Joker. This continues a trend in recent Batman adaptations, where the Dark Knight’s use of lethal force is meant to set it apart from more traditional interpretations. In the case of Gotham Knights, however, it also serves to increase the tension between two of its lead characters.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Gotham Knights show is set on an Earth quite different from the classic Gotham City, where Bruce Wayne adopted a boy named Turner Hayes after the violent deaths of Turner’s parents. Turner is shocked by the revelation that Bruce Wayne was Batman, after his father is found dead wearing Batman’s cowl. Despite this, Turner is accused of masterminding the crime after the GCPD discover his bank account was used to pay the accused killers. This leads to Turner being arrested and confined with the teenagers accused of Bruce Wayne’s murder, and his discovery that one of them might have a motive for killing Batman beyond money.

Batman Killed The Joker In Gotham Knights

One of Batman’s accused killers is Duela Doe, who is believed to be The Joker’s daughter. Born in Arkham Asylum, Duela was said to have been in and out of juvenile court throughout her young life. District Attorney Harvey Dent quickly seized upon the idea that Duela might have gone after Bruce Wayne to avenge her father, suggesting that The Joker was killed in a confrontation with Batman. Duela later confirmed that Batman killed the Joker in a conversation with Turner Hayes, but laughed off the idea that she’d try to avenge him, claiming that “Papa J ditched me and my mom in Arkham before my first tooth came in.”

Why So Many Adaptations Have Batman Kill Joker

Batman almost kills Joker in the comics.

Gotham Knights is not the first live-action Batman adaptation to have Batman kill The Joker. Luke Fox explained how the Arrowverse Batman killed Joker to Kate Kane in the Batwoman season 1 episode 17,”A Narrow Escape,” noting that the GCPD pretended he was still imprisoned in Arkham Asylum. Batman also killed Joker in Titans’ season 3 premiere, in response to the Clown Prince of Crime murdering Jason Todd’s Robin. The reason for this repetition is that Batman is so famous for his code against killing in the comics that showing him break his one rule is a quick (if lazy) way to raise the stakes in any Batman adaptation.

Confirming that Batman killed The Joker is also a good way to eliminate any possibility of the character showing up later. While this is unlikely to happen in Gotham Knights given the character rights are tied up in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux, the question of if The Joker would show up in Batwoman or Titans arose repeatedly until the series shut down the idea. This is for the best, as there seems little point in bringing out the Clown Prince of Crime without a Dark Knight to oppose him.

Gotham Knights airs Tuesdays on The CW.

Valheim just got a new update and

Buying just one piece of gear is only the first step. For our “Deals of the Week,” we found three bundles to get you running instead of walking.

Finding a good bundle on sale can be the difference between getting a camera and being ready to shoot a full production. But finding the right collection of gear can be a challenge.

For our “Deals of the Week,” we found three options from the trifecta: image, audio, and lighting. These bundles will cover everything a production will need. We also have a really cool honorable mention from the Pacific Northwest.

The BMPCC 6K Pro is one of the best cameras on the market. Not because it has the best image of them all, but because of how affordable it is for what you get. You get BRAW, internal NDs, gyro data, and a 6K Super 35 sensor.

This kit pairs the BMPCC 6K Pro with a Sigma 18-35mm zoom lens, the BMPCC battery grip, the BMPCC 6K EVF, a mini-shotgun mic, a 500GB Angelbird AtomX SSDmini, a USB 3.1 to 2.5″ SATA III adapter cable, a 512GB CFast 2.0 card, a total of three L-Series type batteries, a dual charger, and a doctor’s-style bag to carry everything.

There’s also an external monitor for when you really need to rig things out.

Your image is only as good as your audio. What’s the rule of thumb? Good audio can save bad video, but no amount of good video can save bad audio. This is where Audio-Technica comes in with the Location Recording Kit. Put this in the hands of an experienced boom operator, and you’ll get amazing audio to sweeten in post-production.

This kit is designed as a complete microphone setup for location recording in budget film work and broadcasting, electronic news gathering (ENG), and field production applications.

It features the Audio-Technica AT875R short shotgun microphone, a furry windshield, a universal shoe/pole shock mount, a pistol grip, an aluminum cabled boom pole, a boom pole bag, and short and long right-angled XLR cables to provide everything necessary for capturing crisp audio.

Finally, the one thing we need to complete our trifecta is lighting. For this week’s deals, we chose a tube light set. Tube lights are great because of their versatility. They can be used as practical lights in your composition, or as tools to light your scene.

The kit contains two Nanlite PavoTube II 30X tube lights with AC adapters, mounting clips, and a bag for storage and transport.

Each tube light outputs up to 746 lux at 3.3′ (5600K) and offers professional color, control, and power features to make it a valuable asset for anyone. It has an expansive CCT color range of 2700 to 12,000K to handle any ambient light situation or match other fixtures and full spectrum RGB that gives you access to millions of colors and hues to fit your requirements.

For our honorable mention, we return back to cameras for this Ultimate Bundle from Moment. This kit is minimalist but gives you all the tools you’ll need to get shooting portraiture, wildlife, or street videography. Perfect for content creators on the go, this kit comes with the incredible Fujifilm X-H2s, and a choice between the XF 70-300mm F4-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens or the XF 56mm F1.2 R Lens. All this is paired with the Moment CineBloom Diffusion Filter in the strength of your choice, a solid camera bag, and a new camera strap. We had the chance to test the X-H2s when it was first announced, and the combination of the sensor, internal ProRes, and Fuji’s signature film emulations, made this camera an absolute dream for hybrid shooters.

Which these bundles do you want as part of your kit? Maybe you want all four? Let us know in the comments!

Netflix is eying a new war adaptation of the classic Ernest Hemingway novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, What’s on Netflix has learned.

A new For Whom The Bell Tolls movie has been developing for at least two decades, with Game of Thrones co-creator and co-showrunner David Benioff attached to the project in the early 2000s. Back then, the project was with Warner Bros, and Leonardo DiCaprio was tipped to play a role in the movie in ’05. There’s little record of what happened to the project after this, and according to Cinema.com, “DiCaprio won’t commit to the project without a director, however, and none is attached so far.”

David Benioff since mentioned the book in his 2016 article for the New York Times, looking at his favorite ten books of all time. In the segment on For Whom the Bell Tolls, the writer states:

“Yes, a few of the lines are easy to mock. (“I love thee and thou art so lovely and so wonderful and so beautiful and it does such things to me to be with thee that I feel as though I wanted to die when I am loving thee.”) Yes, the constant use of “thee” is grating. But my love for this novel isn’t rational. I have no interest in defending it. I loved it from first to last. No final page has ever left me as shattered.”

In 2022, we were first told that an adaptation might be in the works at Netflix via two copyright registrations with Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. The Universal registration specifically mentioned a “Short-Form One Picture License.”

Fast forward to 2023, and we’ve learned that David Benioff is eyed to continue writing the script for Netflix while long-term collaborator Alan Taylor is eyed to direct.

As you may know, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and currently working with Netflix under an extensive overall deal ever since Game of Thrones wrapped on HBO. Thus far, the pair have (either together or separately) worked on Metal Lords, The Chair, and Leslie Jones: Time Machine.

Their next major project is The Three-Body Problem (codenamed Straight Shooter), likely due for release in 2023, with their only other project announced thus far being The Overstory.

Alan Taylor is the writer, producer, and director who worked in 7 episodes of Game of Thrones and was the director on The Many Saints of Newark, Terminator Genisys, and Thor: The Dark World.

First published in 1940, here’s the official synopsis for the book written by Ernest Hemingway, per GoodReads:

“The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan’s love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo’s last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving and wise.”

The story has been adapted in numerous formats, including the 1943 Oscar-winning adaptation starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman.

That’s all we have on the new project for now; we’ll keep you posted if and when Netflix confirms the project further down the line.

Harvey Dent, better known as Two-Face, has always been one of Batman’s most formidable foes — but what happens when you take the Bat out of the equation before Harvey even transforms into his villainous self? Well, according to “Gotham Knights” star Misha Collins, it actually makes some elements a bit easier.

Collins is making the jump from the world of the supernatural to a world of superheroes on Tuesday night, with the premiere of The CW’s new series. In it, he plays Harvey Dent, Gotham’s white knight of a District Attorney. Of course, we all know how his story progresses. But, in this series, Batman is dead within the first 10 minutes of the episode.

So, how do you play one of Batman’s fiercest villains, with no Batman to face off against?

“I think it actually works very well for creating a new series,” Collins told TheWrap ahead of the premiere. “Because first of all, not a lot of people know all of the nuanced details that go into Harvey Dent/Two-Face’s backstory, right? So like, we’re exploring stuff about that particular character that most people aren’t familiar with, unlike some other characters in the Batman universe, like Batman, right? Or the Joker.”

He continued, “It’s hard to tell those stories without people bringing baggage to the table. But this character, I think, is cool, because we know. We know that there’s going to be a turn, we know he’s going to become Two-Face, right? But other than that, we don’t know how he’s gonna get there or why he’s gonna get there. And by having the rest of the cast of characters made up of the children of notable Batman universe villains and heroes, we’re getting to basically play out a new story without having to be beholden to what everybody has in their mind.”

Collins noted that, free of any preconceived notions from DC fans, he and his cast were able to “create our own narrative, in our own world, without stepping on the toes of those who have gone before us.”

Granted, Collins had his own ideas of Harvey Dent. The actor admitted he was never a big comics reader, but he knew how important the character is to the universe at large. And, with some luck — and admittedly some hubris — Collins hopes that the Harvey Dent/Two-Face introduced in “Gotham Knights” will leave a long legacy.

“It was cool to get on the show, and then do a deeper dive into all of the existing lore about the character and to be able to cherry-pick the best elements to create this version of Harvey Dent,” Collins said. “Which I think, ultimately, will probably, in terms of like the on-screen iteration, end up being — maybe this is hubris, but I think it’s kind of like the definitive Harvey Dent story, with a Two-Face story.”

“Gotham Knights” premieres on Tuesday, March 14 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.

It might take a miracle to halt Miley Cyrus’ reign over the U.K. singles chart. Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding could have just the thing.

The all-British collaboration “Miracle” (via Columbia), a throwback to ‘90s warehouse raves, dropped last Friday (March 10) and is dancing to a fast start on the national survey.

“Miracle” debuts at No. 4 on the Official U.K. Chart Update, and is set to become Harris’ 29th and Goulding’s 12th top 10 singles, and their third as a duo. The pair previously landed hits with 2012’s “I Need Your Love” (peaking at No. 4) and 2014’s “Outside” (No. 6).

The top of the chart update looks no different from recent weeks. Cyrus “Flowers” (Columbia) is the midweek leader, and looks set to land a ninth consecutive week at No. 1, while its parent Endless Summer Vacation, has a strong grip on the U.K. albums chart race. If matters stay as they are, Cyrus will bag a U.K. chart double later in the week. The U.S. pop star also looks to enter the singles chart with “River” (No. 13) and “Jaded” (No. 29), for what would be Cyrus’ 22nd and 23rd top 40 appearances.

An unchanged top three on the singles chart update sees PinkPantheress’ “Boy’s a liar” (Warner Records) and the Weeknd’s “Die For You” (Republic Records/XO) hold positions No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, while Afrobeats artist Libianca could snag a new high with “People” (5K), up 10-6.

Finally, the U.K.’s entrant to the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest 2023, Mae Muller, is enjoying early support in her homeland with “I Wrote A Song” (Capitol). It’s on target for a No. 24 debut for what would be the 25-year-old singer’s first-ever solo charting single in the U.K.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Singles Chart is published Friday.

SXSW FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! Canadian director-writer Sophie Jarvis debuts her directorial career with the gripping, atmospheric eco-tale Until Branches Bend. Robin (Grace Glowicki) is a cannery worker who, after discovering what she believes to be an invasive insect in a peach, tries to convince her manager that there may be a danger worth investigating from the insect. Robin’s job is to grade peaches, and when her co-workers go on break, she finds the disturbing-looking creature in the fruit. She takes photos, then alerts her boss Dennis (Lochlyn Munro), who consults his management. Unfortunately, the company elects to ignore it, assuming it’s an isolated occurrence, and sweeps the whole incident under the rug.

The processing facility is located in the Okanagan valley in British Columbia, which had previously been devastated by an invasive species of moth. The moth infestation spread throughout the region and destroyed crops and livelihoods at a terrifying pace. When Robin finds the insect in a peach, the area is just beginning to recover from the moth damage, and no one wants to hear about another possible infestation. Despite being brushed off, Robin is undeterred and sends the photos to an agricultural lab. The result is the cannery being closed until an investigation can be done. The townspeople are enraged when they hear what she’s done. In their short-sighted reactionary fury, she is ostracized, as if she was responsible for the insect being in the fruit.

“…discovering what she believes to be an invasive insect in a peach…“

The changes impact her home life as well. Her sister Laney (Alexandra Roberts) decides she needs to leave town to pursue work elsewhere when the cannery closes. To further complicate the situation, Robin learns she’s pregnant following casual sex and has no income stream. She is told the pregnancy is too far along for an abortion pill, and having the actual procedure is a logistical nightmare complicated by puritanical anti-reproductive rights laws.

While the story seems to be a straightforward David vs. Goliath challenge, reminiscent of the themes in Silkwood, Norma Rae, Erin Brokovich, and Dark Waters, Jarvis takes a different path than any of her predecessors. She touches on much deeper themes of humanity being at odds with nature and also shines a light on rural misogyny and mob rule.

This all comes through the lens of cinematographer Jeremy Cox’s lush 16mm vision of the beautiful landscape of an Okanagan valley summer. The grainy film adds to the mystery of dusty, hot days spent picking peaches and Robin’s struggles to convince the town that another infestation is coming. Like Cassandra, she is shunned and reviled for her revelations. Glowicki delivers a powerful performance as Robin. She’s tall and a bit awkward, attractive, with intense physicality. Yet, she never seems at a loss, as her confidence in her own ethics drives her outside the comfort of the life she’s made. The ferocity of her personality is as casually powerful as that of a great beast. She’s almost carelessly confident, never questioning herself.

Jarvis presents this psychological drama without much exposition or rumination. The viewer witnesses events and is welcome to interpret their meanings and themes. This opens the film up to many different concepts and conclusions. It’s clear that Robin is much more affected by the possibility of an infestation than would be explained by a natural amount of concern over the situation. She’s somehow linked the idea that the insect in the peach is an echo of the unexpected, potentially invasive life growing inside her own womb. She seeks to rediscover her equilibrium, rejoin her sister to escape the sudden twists of fate, and regain control over a better life ahead; whether she can is left to the viewer to discover. Until Branches Bend is as powerful a thrill ride as it is a statement. Jarvis delivers mightily on her first feature film.

Until Branches Bend screened at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival.

SXSW FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! Canadian director-writer

ANDREW Tate could be freed from his hellhole prison cell and placed on house arrest in a new court hearing today.

The disgraced influencer, 36, will have his first bail hearing on Tuesday since he was detained more than two months ago.

He and brother Tristan, 34, have been languishing in a Romanian jail since they were arrested amid a probe into human trafficking and rape allegations on December 29.

Tate has been going to and from the court as his legal team fight against the arrest warrant and the extensions to his detention.

Romanian cops can keep Tate under arrest for up to 180 days – but have to apply for 30 day extensions to his detention.

The maximum time he can be under arrest until is June 27.

Tate says 3 'mortals' tried to scare him in laundry room of 'hellhole' jail

But now, his team are not challenging the arrest warrant – instead they are requesting bail that would see Tate potentially released under house arrest.

It is the first time the Romanian judges will discuss his formal request to be released from police custody amid the ongoing investigation.

Andrew will have his hearing today, with Tristan due to have his hearing tomorrow – and their “angel” Georgiana Naghel will have hers on March 16.

The Tates had previously appealed at the Bucharest Court of Appeal as they challenged their arrest and the extensions of the warrant.

But today their legal team will be taking to the main Bucharest Court.

The Tates can be released to house arrest if the judge decides the measure is “safe” and does not endanger the investigation.

Judges will have three days to deliberate their decision after each of the hearings for the two Tates and Naghel.

A spokesman for Andrew and Tristan told The Sun: “Last week, the Romanian judicial system approved a bail hearing for Andrew and Tristan Tate.

“This will take place, for the first time since their arrest, on Tuesday (March 14) for Andrew Tate and Wednesday (March 15), for Tristan Tate.

“Contrary to speculation, this bail hearing is not based on medical grounds neither were the previous appeals.”

Tate last week denied rumours he has cancer after it was confirmed he had a “dark spot on his lung”.

A message on his Twitter insisted the scar on his lung “is from an old battle” after the medical details were released.

If Tate is successful in his hearing and the prosecution does not appeal against it, he will be placed under house arrest.

But if prosecutors appeal the decision, the former kickboxer will remain in a cell until it is approved or rejected.

If the appeal is upheld, Tate will remain in jail – but if dismissed and the bail approval stands, he will be released from prison.

It comes after a judge last month rejected Tate’s latest appeal against his arrests and ordered him to spend another 30 days behind bars.

The brothers had already lost two previous appeals against prior 30-day extensions that have kept them behind bars while investigations continued.

Tate has repeatedly moaned about life behind bars on social media and through emails to his subscribers.

In an email, he complained about the “blistering cold” while being “locked in a box”.

And in another, he launched a thinly veiled attack on his supporters from his jail cell, saying he needs “better people”.

They have been detained for more than 10 weeks amid allegations of human trafficking, organised crime and rape – with their “angels” Georgiana Naghel and Luana Radu also under investigation.

They deny all allegations against them.

The brothers have had all their appeals for release denied as Romanian authorities consider them a flight risk.

They can be held for up to 180 days should further detention extensions be granted by the courts – meaning they can be detained until June 27.

Misogynist influencer Tate built up an image that appealed to teenage boys – creating an online empire that made him one of the most searched people on Google.

Masquerading as lifestyle advice, much of the content is considered highly sexist and is seen as promoting violence against women.

His influence has had a worrying spread amongst young men and boys, with one UK MP saying he is “brainwashing” children.

Tate initially gained fame after a short-lived appearance on Big Brother.

Season 10 of “Vanderpump Rules” continues to air amidst the ongoing cheating scandal between castmates Tom Sandoval and Raquel Leviss. While the scandal — dubbed the “Scandoval” — only came to light two weeks ago, viewers are now watching the episodes with a different lens. And this upcoming Wednesday’s episode is a doozy, according to Bravo personality Andy Cohen.

“Guys, you’re going to watch Wednesday’s episode. You are going to think that it was recut. OK? It was not recut,” Cohen teased Monday on his Sirius XM show “Andy Cohen Live.”

“I watched it and I was like, ‘People are going to think we did this, or we moved stuff up, or we somehow…’ The conversations that go on between Katie and Lala and Raquel are not to be believed in light of what has come out. But I’m telling y’all the episode was not touched,” Cohen doubled down. “OK. This is how it was going to be shown. So at, which makes it all the more shocking. You won’t believe it.”

In fact, sources close to production have told TheWrap that none of the locked episodes of “Vanderpump Rules” will be re-edited in light of the scandal. In other words, the episodes will air as they were going to before the “Scandoval” came to light. (Click here if you need a primer on it.)

However, executive producer and star Lisa Vanderpump confirmed the show has gone back into production for two weeks, and a reunion will be taped afterwards.

Sources close to production tell TheWrap that the footage being currently filmed will be packaged into an additional episode(s) at the end of the season before the reunion. They will not be made into a standalone special.

The re-editing of a current airing season is not unheard of. Episodes of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 12 were re-edited after a contestant was disqualified for posing as a casting director and putting men in compromising positions.

“Vanderpump Rules” airs Wednesdays on Bravo.

The delight of the John Wick franchise lies squarely in its weirdness. The film series famously kicked off with mercenary protagonist and certified wife guy John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, avenging his dog. But as John’s thirst for vengeance dwindled, the screenwriters decided to surround him with bloodthirsty weirdos rather than kill more of his loved ones. Even better, the films are aware of their own strangeness, lending a campy joy to even the dourest deeds.

The franchise is at its bizarre best in “John Wick 4,” written by Shay Hatten (“John Wick: Chapter 3,” “Army of the Dead”) and Michael Finch (“Predators,” “American Assassin”) and directed, as always, by stuntman Chad Stahelski. The wild world of assassins is more esoteric, the cinematography and choreography more stunning. Though the film stretches to an audacious 169 minutes — just under three hours — if you surrender yourself to the gorgeous silliness of the Wickiverse, it goes by in a fist-flying flash.

“John Wick 4” opens on shots of a bloody fist punching a post. Our hero is back from the dead and ready to rumble. As the Bowery King (Lawrence Fishburne) watches over his dog, John embarks on an international quest to bring down the High Table, starting with its desert-dwelling Elder (George Georgiou, “Game of Thrones”). Trouble comes to the New York Continental’s door in the form of The Harbinger (Clancy Brown, “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Dexter: New Blood”), who orchestrates the destruction of the entire building.

The Harbinger is working in concert with the Marquis de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård, “Barbarian,” “It”), a High Table member who has been granted special oversight in order to take down John Wick once and for all. The Marquis has handpicked Caine (Donnie Yen, “Ip Man,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), a blind assassin and John’s old friend, to do his dirty work, but he has other tricks up his sleeve to get the job done. The Osaka Continental comes under fire when John seeks safe harbor there, and an anonymous, hipster hitman (Shamier Anderson, “Wynonna Earp,” “Invasion”) and his Belgian Malinois join the fray as John’s contract fee skyrockets.

No retribution is too ridiculous, no massacre too jazzy. The scenes at the Osaka Continental are particularly yummy. Master cinematographer Dan Lausten (“Crimson Peak” and “John Wicks 2 and 3”) takes unabashed advantage of that city’s neon-soaked aesthetic, and Reeves and Yen have their first face-off. Pop star Rina Sawayama makes a welcome addition as Akira, Concierge of the Osaka Continental and daughter to its owner, another old pal of John’s named Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada, “Sunshine,” “Bullet Train”). Akira gets some of the best choreography of the film, letting arrows fly as she launches herself from villain to villain in her Katniss Everdeen-meets-dominatrix best.

Five choreographers, led by stunt coordinator Scott Rogers (“John Wick 3: Parabellum”), oversaw a record 14 action sequences to get this movie made. But if your eyes tend to glaze over during extended fight scenes, have no fear. As in the third film, John brandishes and discards weapon with the swiftness of a video game character, finding creative uses for every cudgel. (There are no pencils in eye sockets this go-round, but get ready for our hero’s first dalliance with nunchucks.) Caine also presents a fun creative challenge: Rather than his blindness lending him preternatural fighting ability, he must use his wits and weapons to sense his attackers coming. His swordlike cane does most of the work, but in one memorable sequence he peppers a passage with motion-activated doorbells.

The film’s pièce de résistance, though, is undoubtedly the flamboyant Marquis. Bill Skarsgård leaves no scenery unchewed as he simpers from the ballet to the stables in a series of flashy suits, all of which come with double-breasted waistcoats and chained pocket watches, and some of which are covered in glitter — thank you, costume designer Paco Delgado (“The Skin I Live In,” “Cats”). As Skarsgård admirably attempts a French accent and luxuriates in hilarious extravagance, it’s difficult not to root for him. He’s the funnest character in this franchise by far — a high bar, since “John Wick 4” is replete with showy talent. Scott Adkins (“Zero Dark Thirty,” “Doctor Strange”) and Natalia Tena (“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”) also delight as a German villain and Ruska Roma boss, respectively.

Though it reaches a rushed conclusion, “John Wick 4” barrels along with charming idiosyncrasy. Reeves delivers each line as though he has just learned to speak for the first time. A fire-blasting shot gun gets some excellent screen time. Lausten’s cinematography has never been more inventive. Even when it drags — 169 minutes is a lot of time to fill, even for this masterful crew — the film gamely mixes comedy, action, and drama into one truly satisfying cocktail. If you’re more inclined to wait for streaming, make an exception just this once. Every audacious set piece, costume, and fight scene was clearly, lovingly made for the biggest of all big screens.

Chaitanya tweeted about this update on March 13.

Billed to be a mass action entertainer, the Tamil-Telugu bilingual titled Custody is gearing up for a grand summer release on May 12.

The year 2022 ended on a sad note for South actor Naga Chaitanya, as he couldn’t strike a connection with the audience and ended up with three back-to-back flops: Bangarraju, Thank You and Laal Singh Chaddha. Now, he has pinned all his hopes on the upcoming film Custody, directed by Venkat Prabhu. The teaser of this film is all set to release on March 16 at 4:51 PM. The film’s team will surely be waiting for a thrilling response from social media users and Chaitanya’s fans.

Chaitanya tweeted about this update on March 13. He also added a glimpse of this film. The glimpse seems to set us in motion, taking us through the plains and then into a sea. Then comes the announcement with a text above the visuals, which says that it’s going to be one “hellava ride”. It is followed by the camera showing Chaitanya dressed up in the attire of a cop and locked inside a small underwater jail. Then the viewers are informed that the wait is over.

Chay, as he is fondly known among fans, is then seen breaking out of the prison-like structure and smiling, before swimming away to the top of the surface. It is then the announcement of the Custody teaser release date is revealed. “This is just a tease, not a teaser, there’s more to come!!” Chaitanya tweeted along with the clip.

Fans were enthralled with this announcement and tweeted that they were eagerly looking forward to this film. Many of them couldn’t help appreciating the background music of the video. It remains to be seen if the electrifying response to the “tease” will translate into a successful teaser launch as well.

Krithi Shetty, Arvind Swami, Sarathkumar, Priyamani, Sampath Raj, Premji, Vennela Kishore and Premi Vishwanath will essay key roles in Custody. Billed to be a mass action entertainer, the Tamil-Telugu bilingual titled Custody is gearing up for a grand summer release on May 12.

It is produced by Srinivasaa Chitturi, under the Srinivasaa Silver Screen banner and is presented by Pavan Kumar. Ilaiyaraaja and his son Yuvan Shankar Raja have been roped in for curating the music of Custody.

Based on the deafening cheers that shook the walls of the Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas on Monday, the SXSW Film Festival premiere of “John Wick: Chapter 4” was a rousing success — and that’s before the film had even started. All it took was star Keanu Reeves to step on stage at the behest of director Chad Stahelski for the 1,000-plus audience to erupt in unbridled enthusiasm.

That fervor never waned throughout the film’s epic two-hour-and-49-minute runtime, with booming ovations following the prodigious action sequences in Osaka, Berlin and Paris — and vocal gasps after several major twists.

Stepping onto the stage after the screening, Reeves and Stahelski both seemed pleasantly shell-shocked by the raucous reception.

“You guys are amazing,” Reeves said. “Thanks for that experience. You guys are fucking awesome.”

Added Stahelski, “This is one of the best audiences of all time.”

Reporting on the rest of the post-screening Q&A, however, is a bit of a challenge, as the conversation at times drifted into serious spoiler territory — including Reeves’ answer for his favorite moment in the movie, which elicited a chorus of “Awwwws” from the audience.

Stahelski’s answer was, at least, spoiler-free: “It was the first day Keanu came on set,” he said. “He had the suit back on and it was the first time we were back together in three years. So it was pretty special.”

Like every other “John Wick” film, “Chapter 4” is steeped in baroquely staged and choreographed fight scenes, including one that unfolds in one unbroken take which Stahelski said took a week to film. Then Reeves cut in: “And months and months of planning and training.”

Much of the Q&A involved audience members launching into extended tributes to the film’s star. One person asked Reeves if he ever ages.

“Yeah man, I age,” he replied wearily. “I really — I age. It’s happening, man.”

After Reeves said he kept Wick’s watch and wedding ring from the previous movies, someone shouted, “I’ll marry you!”

“Yeah, be careful what you wish for,” Reeves replied.

Another person yelled “Bring back ‘Constantine’,” referencing Reeves’ beloved 2005 DC adaptation.

“I’m trying, man,” the actor said with a sigh.

One of the final questions came from someone who, appropriately, had a puppy with him, who asked if Reeves was planning to appear in the upcoming “John Wick” spin-offs, including the series “The Continental,” due to premiere on Peacock later this year, and “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas.

Both Reeves and Stahelski seemed unsure of how to answer.

“Uh, not sure yet,” the director said, followed immediately by a tentative “No” from Reeves — who then contradicted himself. “I have a cameo in ‘Ballerina,’ that’s true.”

“John Wick: Chapter 4” will open in theaters on March 24.

Review: Batman #133

[Editor’s Note: This review may contain spoilers]

Writer: Chip Zdarsky

Artists: Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto, Miguel Mendonca

Colours: Tomeu Morey, Roman Stevens

Letters: Clayton Cowles

Reviewed By: Derek McNeil

Summary

Batman #133: Everyone goes insane eventually. And then they belong to the terrifying Red Mask! But Gotham City has a new savior. He strikes from the shadows, exhumes the dead, and is known only as…the Batman. And in our backup story, Tim Drake’s search for Batman continues as he and Superman, Jon Kent, team up to stop the terror of the Toyman!

Positives

There is much that I enjoyed in Chip Zdarsky’s Batman #133, but my absolute favourite part is Bruce’s interaction with the Alfred Pennyworth of this parallel Earth. With Alfred having died in the main DCU, we only get to occasionally Bruce interact with him in flashbacks, hallucinations, or dreams. But this time, Bruce is interacting with a real live Alfred. It may not be the Alfred we know, but he appears to be the same character at heart.

Bruce tells this world’s Alfred,

…I’m from another universe. And the Alfred Pennyworth of my universe… was a kind man who stood up to evil. I’m here to do just that… I’ll do everything in my power to make things right… because an Alfred Pennyworth raised me.”

Something that is sometimes overlooked by many Batman writers is that Alfred was just as much of a father figure to Bruce as Thomas Wayne – if not more. It’s great to see that Zdarsky understands this crucial piece of the Batman mythos. And I like that Bruce gets the chance to express his love and appreciation to Alfred for this upbringing, even if it’s not his Alfred.

Another interesting facet of this story is seeing Bruce re-establishing himself as Batman, but without the benefit of Wayne Industries’ resources. It was somewhat teased that we would see Bruce operate without these resources in the wake of The Joker War. However, his career as Batman seems to have gone mostly unaffected, other than a change of residence.

But now we see that Bruce has had to cobble together a somewhat makeshift costume and weapons. Hawthorne and Di Benedetto have done a great job designing a lower tech Batsuit – possible too good. It looks good enough that it must have been somewhat expensive for Bruce to make. Not millions, but it must have cost at least several hundred at least. How did Bruce manage to accomplish this?

Batman #133 - DC Comics News

Positives Cont.

Bruce does make an interesting discovery. As far as this world is concerned, their Bruce Wayne was killed years ago. But Bruce discovers that the Bruce Wayne that died is from yet another parallel Earth. This raises some important questions. What universe is this Bruce Wayne from? And what happened to this world’s Bruce? Is he still on this Earth or on another, or is he also dead? Zdarsky has given Bruce quite the intriguing and off-beat mystery to solve.

Bruce’s encounters with the Riddler and Judge Dent show that Batman doesn’t need his fancy gadgets to be Batman. They’re tools that he makes uses of, but Bruce is every bit the badass as ever, even without them. And this world’s villains don’t stand a chance against him.

Batman #133’s backup story continues Tim Drake’s quest to find and bring Bruce back to the main DCU Earth. To this end, he has tracked down Toyman, who created the weapon that sent Bruce to another universe.

Toyman has fled to yet another universe, and Tim aims to bring him back to help figure out where in the Multiverse, Bruce was sent. Importantly, Tim also makes a point of bringing all the victims Toyman abducted to this parallel Earth. Tim’s ultimate aim is to get Bruce back, but helping others takes priority. Just as Bruce learned this from Alfred, Tim learned it from Bruce.

Negatives

I am a bit confused about one thing in the backup story. Tim wears an outfit designed for multiversal travel. It’s quite a striking design from Miguel Mendonca, but it looks nothing like a Robin costume in either design or colours. But Toyman recognizes him immediately on sight as being a Robin. I don’t see how he possibly could have done so.

The only hint of his Robin costume is his mask, which is barely visible under the shaded glass of the helmet’s faceplate. It’s conceivable, if unlikely, that a Batman villain might be familiar enough with Robin to recognize him. But Toyman is a Superman villain. If the story called for Toyman to recognize Tim as a Robin, then the uniform should have somehow marked him as Robin, like the R-symbol or the distinctive red/green/yellow colour scheme.

However, this is a minor issue, and doesn’t really detract from the story. So, I can easily overlook it.

Batman #133 - DC Comics News

Verdict

Zdarsky’s “The Bat-Man of Gotham City” is proving to be a very thought-provoking storyline. It’s an intriguing examination of how Bruce would fare in a very different version of Gotham. But, Zdarsky shows us that Bruce is up to the challenge. Because being Batman is Bruce’s destiny, regardless of which version of Gotham City he may find himself in.

There is no Batman in Gotham Knights, unless you count a brief wide shot of Bruce Wayne in his office and a closer one of his bloodied corpse on the sidewalk. That is, indeed, the whole point of Gotham Knights: The series is set in the panicked aftermath of the Caped Crusader’s death, as his adopted son Turner (Oscar Morgan) tries to catch his dad’s killer and in the process emerges as a hero in his own right.

But even in his absence, Batman casts a long shadow — one Gotham Knights struggles to get out from under in the six hourlong episodes sent to critics. It’s Batman’s work that links nearly all the characters, Batman’s death that finally brings them all together, Batman’s history they’re made to sift through and Batman’s legacy they work to live up to. Amid all that Bat-business, the show’s own identity tends to get a little lost.

Gotham Knights

The Bottom Line

Sacrifices character at the altar of superhero business.

Airdate: 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 14 (The CW)
Cast: Oscar Morgan, Misha Collins, Navia Ziraili Robinson, Olivia Rose Keegan, Anna Lore, Fallon Smythe, Tyler DiChiara, Rahart Adams
Creators: Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, Natalie Abrams

In concept, Gotham Knights, created by Natalie Abrams, Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux, would seem to represent a marriage of two The CW staples, the superhero saga and the teen soap (Full disclosure: Abrams is married to a member of the THR staff.) You might even mistake Turner, upon first impression, for a supporting player on a series like Gossip Girl or All American — he’s popular, gifted, conventionally attractive and unfathomably wealthy, with just enough of a rebellious streak to invite his prep-school classmates for booze-fueled ragers at Wayne Manor when Dad’s away on work.

Once Bruce is found dead, however, Gotham Knights tilts heavily toward superhero business at the expense of its interpersonal drama. In fairness, the former is more obviously urgent. Turner discovers that he’s being framed for the murder, along with three other, markedly less privileged teens: runaway siblings Harper (Fallon Smythe) and Cullen (Tyler DiChiara), plus Duela (Olivia Rose Keegan), the estranged daughter of the Joker. (Duela even gets to stick her head out the window of a stolen cop car, just like her dad did in that one movie.) As law enforcement closes in, the quartet are forced to lay low while working in secret to crack the case and clear their names for themselves.

As a murder mystery, Gotham Knights is crammed with twists steeped in a deep and mostly endearing affection for Bat-lore. Each cryptic clue seems to bring the gang in contact with another well-known group of baddies, from the Mutants to the McKillens to the Court of Owls. And each revelation seems to stretch further and further back into the annals of Wayne history, until at one point the teams deduce that the real key to solving Bruce’s murder lies in a separate case from a century ago. Meanwhile, their episodic missions start to attract the attention of the rest of the city, who crown their mysterious new heroes the “Gotham Knights.”

But it all feels weightless when the Knights themselves are so flimsily conceived. Turner, one of the show’s truly original creations — a child of Bruce Wayne who is not any of the half-dozen or so other children of Bruce Wayne introduced in the comics over the years — seems to have inherited his father’s reserve but not the intensity or darkness that made him so intriguing, and Morgan proves able to do only so much with dialogue mostly devoid of humor or nuance. Similarly, although Keegan makes a big first impression as erratic, unpredictable Duela, that only makes it more frustrating that she’s offered so few other notes to play.

Anna Lore fares a little better as Stephanie, a friend of Turner’s whose combination of loyalty, vulnerability and playfulness make her one of the show’s more relatable characters. (That her dad happens to be the classic villain Cluemaster, played by Ethan Embry, is sure to become devastatingly relevant at some point.) And Navia Ziraili Robinson comes out best of all as former Batman sidekick Carrie Kelley, bringing a much-needed warmth and groundedness to the series. Not coincidentally, they’re also the characters we actually get to see carrying on lives outside the central mission, juggling family concerns and school work alongside their vigilante activities. The core team’s single-minded devotion to their quest may be understandable and admirable, but it’s hard not to wish they’d take more breaks to show what else they might be capable of — to hang out, hook up or otherwise just have a bit of fun.

Instead, they’re dragged down by the show’s tell-don’t-show approach to character development. When Turner and Carrie confess to being mutually jealous over the other’s unique bond with Batman, for instance, the emotional impact is blunted by how little detail we get about what those relationships were actually like when Bruce was alive. Likewise, though the series heavily telegraphs the fate of Turner’s ally, district attorney Harvey Dent (Misha Collins) — at one point cutting to a shot of Harvey’s face half in deep shadow after a character describes him as “two-faced” — it never gets around to making him a character deep or interesting enough to care about in the first place.

All the while, Gotham Knights defaults to the grim tone of most recent live-action Batman and Batman-adjacent adaptations, sweetened only slightly by long, sentimental conversations in which the characters explain their feelings to each other. The lugubrious tone is reflected by a murky visual palette, with much of its action set in dimly lit rooms, parking garages and alleyways, where making out the action can pose something of a challenge. Occasionally, the series’ taste for grittiness pays off. There’s a beheading very early in the season that made me gasp, and an unsettling take on Joe Chill by Doug Bradley in episode six that almost makes the prospect of relitigating the deaths of Martha and Thomas Wayne yet again seem worth it.

Without enough style or personality to shed new light on this world, though, Gotham Knights‘ darkness starts to look awfully dull. Maybe there really is a fresh future for the DC franchise lurking in there somewhere, and it just needs some time to emerge; certainly, the cast chemistry is promising enough to hope for better from this gang. But if they’re really determined to blaze a new trail forward for Gotham City, these knights will need to start by not retreating so readily into its past.

Ariana DeBose’s sweet reaction to coming face-to-face with Morgan Freeman is likely how many would react if they were in a similar situation.

The West Side Story star shared a Live with Kelly and Ryan clip on her social media, where she gets starstruck by the Invictus actor as he walks up beside her at the 95th annual Oscars on Sunday. In the video, DeBose freezes as her mouth drops when she sees Freeman, initially startling the Oscar-winning actor.

“I just really respect and love you a lot, sir,” she proceeds to say before shaking his hand. “And my name’s Ariana and it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“How do you do, Ariana?” The Dark Knight actor responds, clarifying how to pronounce her name. After the interaction, DeBose walks away, clearly elated to have met someone she looks up to.

When the Oscar-winning actress shared the footage to her social media on Monday, she added the caption, “Wholesome moments only. It was an honor to meet you sir!”

This isn’t the first time the actress had a moment to go viral on social media. In February, DeBose’s 2023 BAFTA Awards performance included an original rap where she paid tribute to nominated actresses, including Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“Angela Bassett did the thing, Viola Davis my Woman King, Blanchett Cate you’re a genius and Jamie Lee you are all of us,” DeBose sang, with led to a widespread debate erupting across social media regarding the line, “Angela Bassett did the thing.”

After seeing the viral reaction at the time, DeBose weighed in, saying, “The internet is wild y’all! Appreciate all the love.”

The infamous line then came full circle when Bassett won entertainer of the year at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards. Once she took the stage, the actress joked, “I guess Angela Bassett did the thing!”

Lust and desperation make an odd pair and, in the end, will make you do the strangest things in Gabriel de Varona’s short film, Love and Hunger.

Our tale opens at night in a bar. Former lovers Olivia and Hector meet for the first time in thirty years after leaving the island. Here, we are transported to their past, where our young lovers find themselves washed up on the beach of a deserted island.

When the pair struggles to find food, the lovers soon become annoyed with one another because maybe Hector is entirely useless. Finally, with no food to be found, desperate measures are taken as the two begin to hallucinate one another as their next meal.

“…the two begin to hallucinate one another as their next meal.”

It shouldn’t surprise you that Love and Hunger is a comedy. Writer/director Gabriel de Varona sets a light and humorous tone right from the start. By introducing ourselves to Olivia and Hector as older adults, the fun comes in working this relationship backward to when we are re-introduced to them as young lovers escaping Cuba. This is about as deep as the drama gets. The rest of the film is a series of silly shenanigans with an ending that resembles a Warner Brothers’ Looney Toons of old, and De Varona’s cast pulls off the laughs admirably.

If you’re looking for fourteen minutes of silly fun and dark castaway humor, Love and Hunger is the place to go.

A wildly unpredictable Juno Awards unfolded on Monday as a topless protester charged the stage, leading to some feisty words from Avril Lavigne, while an absent the Weeknd emerged the top winner this year.

With a few twists and turns, Canada’s biggest celebration of music did away with its typically tame proceedings shortly after the broadcast got underway.

Lavigne was interrupted by a topless woman who leapt on the stage wearing pasties on her breasts and “land back” painted on her arm.

The pop-punk princess appeared blindsided by the crasher and proceeded to swear at her, demanding she get off the stage. The person was quickly escorted away by security.

She returned later to accept this year’s fan choice award with a few choice words and another expletive: “Nobody try anything this time or the Canadian is going to come out of me and I’ll (mess) a bitch up.”

The unexpected moment set the tone for an energetic Junos that saw the Weeknd’s smash hit Dawn FM earn him album of the year, adding to four wins he scored at a Saturday industry event, including artist and single of the year for Sacrifice.

After the Junos, the organizers issued a statement saying they take “every step to avoid interruptions” to the program, but that live broadcasts always include risks.

“We hope tonight’s brief disruption doesn’t take away from the accomplishments of this year’s performers, winners and nominees,” they added.

Yet, artists continued to buzz about the topless fan backstage, with Lavigne telling the press room she was confident it was “going down as one of the highlights.”

Liu, who signed off the show saying “sorry about the boobs,” also joked about it backstage: “If you had told me before I hosted there would be someone who would take their shirt off at the Junos, and it wouldn’t be me, I would be shocked.”

A wildly unpredictable Juno Awards unfolded on

More. More. More.

That seems to be the mantra for the fourth edition in the wildly successful John Wick franchise. There is certainly more action with a whopping 14 action sequences, nearly four times the amount in previous Wick flicks; more locations including a Bond-like global journey from Jordan to Japan to Paris to Berlin; and like so many recent films more running time at 169 minutes, and you will want to stay right to the end of the end credits to get the most bang for your bucks.

The John Wicks are indeed progressively getting longer and a little more bloated since the tight 101-minute 2014 original, the 122-minute 2017 Chapter 2, and the 130-minute Chapter 3: Parabellum. This one has grown by nearly 40 minutes, but for the most part never slows down and remains a feast for fans of star Keanu Reeves’ command of this martial arts/gun fu/now car fu too genre.

I personally have still never forgiven the first film for brutally killing off John’s lovable little beagle puppy, but I have to let it go, as the rest of the series has not let audiences down — particularly the last one with a kick-ass Halle Berry and what is still for me that amazing sequence, a masterpiece of action choreography with all those killer dogs doing their thing against the humans.

This new film opens with the assumption of the High Table, that unseen cabal of Crime Lords out to make a deal for John’s head, that Wick is dead. He’s not, and instead in a sequence that might be described as John Wick meets Lawrence of Arabia, we get reintroduced to him in the Jordanian desert as he takes to horseback in the first of those many, many action sequences which are the signature attraction here, obviously. Director Chad Stahelski, a former martial arts expert and stunt man for Reeves in the Matrix pictures, clearly knows what the audience wants and expects, and seems determined to ratchet it all up a few notches. Fortunately, even if it seems just too much of a good thing at times, John Wick: Chapter 4 delivers.

RELATED: SXSW 2023: All Of Deadline’s Movie Reviews

In a switch from being constantly on the run and the hunted, here Wick is on the offensive deciding instead to go after the High Table, setting up a one-on-one challenge against their sadistic emissary, The Marquis, in order to get the target off his back. This leads to a fresh series of tight situations, and unholy alliances with returning and new characters. Chief among them is Donnie Yen’s sometimes friend, Caine, but out of necessity here to save his daughter now foe as well. In yet another role in which he is blind (as in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) he is pitted against Wick, none more effectively than in a mirrored room adorned with Japanese artifacts where the two battle each other with Caine using sword and pistol against Wick’s samurai sword, guns, and AR15. It is dazzling. So too is a Paris-set sequence where the series puts this antihero in the driver’s seat of a classic muscle car, rampaging through the streets of Sacre Coeur where Bill Skarsgard’s The Marquis rules. So too is another prolonged set piece in a Berlin nightclub where he faces another new foe, the appropriately named Killa (MMA star Scott Adkins), and yet another in the Osaka Hotel run by John’s confidante Shimazu (Japan film icon Hiroyuuki Sanada). I could go on. And then there is the big finale, a modern-day martial arts riff on the classic duel to the death, this one presided over by the aging man known only as the Harbinger (veteran Clancy Brown).

Reeves truly continues to impress, seemingly getting better at this stuff with each franchise (following four Matrix films where he honed his initial skills). His characters are men of few words, but who needs a lot of dialogue anyway? The casting in this one with two giants of the genre Yen and Sanada really takes the series to new levels, and Skarsgard seems to be having a swell time playing a lethal guy we love to hate. Shout-out as well to new cast member Shamier Anderson as The Tracker, a killer with a faithful Belgian Malinois (this series does seem to employ a lot of dogs) that not only is a faithful companion but also pretty fearsome when the situation calls for it. Rina Sawayama makes an impressive feature debut as Shimazu’s skilled daughter and concierge of his Osaka hotel.

Returning to the series is Laurence Fishburne as Bowery King, the kingpin who oversees an underground underworld operation and remains a mysterious friend for Wick, as well as Ian McShane’s Winston, the owner of the hired killers paradise, the New York Continental Hotel. Lance Reddick again plays the ever-helpful concierge at that one.

Just as big a star as any of these actors would be Scott Rogers, the lead stunt coordinator/choreographer who helps stage these spectacular set pieces. The ending promises more down the road, but in what direction we will have to wait and see the inevitable John Wick: Chapter 5.

Producers are Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Stahelski. Lionsgate opens the film on Friday exclusively in theatres including Imax. It had its first U.S. first screening Monday night at SXSW

Disney’s Marvel is trying to track down the identity of the person (or people) who allegedly released a 63-page transcript of dialogue from “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” online — one month before the film’s theatrical premiere.

A request filed Friday (March 10) on behalf of Marvel in federal district court in California asked the court to issue a subpoena to compel Reddit to identify the person or group responsible for sharing dialogue from “Quantumania” to the r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers subreddit “on or about” Jan. 20, 2023. The film, starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Jonathan Majors, opened wide in the U.S. on Feb. 17.

Marvel requested “all Identifying Information for the user ‘u/MSSmods’” as well as that of “any other user(s) responsible for posting, editing, and/or maintaining the content” that was available on the subreddit (but is no longer) for the period from Jan. 15-Feb. 15. The Marvel subpoena request was filed pursuant to the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Asked for comment, a Reddit spokesperson declined to say if the company intended to comply with the information requested by Marvel. “Reddit is committed to protecting our users’ privacy. We have rigorous processes in place to assess legal requests and object when appropriate,” the rep said.

Marvel also filed a DMCA subpoena requesting similar info from Google, after someone allegedly shared the document to Google Docs. Reps for Marvel and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Marvel had previously issued DMCA takedown requests to Reddit and Google seeking to remove the copyright-infringing material.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” has been one of the worst-reviewed Marvel movies to date. The film grossed $198 million domestically through its fourth weekend of release, outpacing the original “Ant-Man” ($180 million) and just trailing 2018 sequel “Ant-Man and the Wasp” ($216 million).

The dialogue from the movie that had been leaked online was edited and/or displayed in a Portuguese web interface, per piracy news site TorrentFreak, which previously reported on the Marvel legal filings. The report also cited evidence of the “likelihood that the text was intended for use in subtitles.”

Section: 24 Beats Per Second

Director: Robert Schwartzman

Logline: In their first ever feature documentary nearly sixty years after they met as teenagers before the British Invasion music scene, The Zombies tell their story of navigating the tumultuous music industry over the decades and making one of the most influential albums of all time, Odessey and Oracle. “She’s Not There” made them the first British band after The Beatles to reach #1 in the U.S. After years of touring and many missteps in the 60s, sadly the band missed out on their biggest moment yet, when “Time of the Season” hit #1 and became a global success, inspiring new generations each year. The band looks back on their journey, where true friendship led them to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Panelists: Robert Schwartzman (director); Rod Argent (subject/The Zombies’ keyboardist); Colin Blunstone (subject/The Zombies’ vocalist); Chris White (subject/The Zombies’ bassist); Hugh Grundy (subject/The Zombies’ drummer)

Sales Agent: Utopia

Premiered: Sunday, March 12; Next screening Friday, March 17 2:15 p.m. CT at the ZACH Theatre

Key Quotes: Rod Argent: “I was the ‘unfortunate’ guy that started this band — got all the guys together for our first rehearsal when we were 15 years old. We met outside a pub, which we were too young to go inside, and walked down the road to a youth club and, on borrowed gear, we had our very first rehearsal. That was in 1961.”

Chris White: “We are one of the only few groups from the ‘60s who still like each other… Other groups stay at different hotels, but we like each other.”

Robert Schwartzman: “I don’t know when exactly I first heard my first Zombies’ song… I really gravitate towards well-crafted songs and every song by The Zombies is just so insanely awesome that it’s just so hard not to, like, fall for every little bit of their music.”

The Deadline Studio at SXSW runs March 10-13, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup sit down with Deadline’s festival team to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Austin, Texas.

HUNG UP ON A DREAM Section: 24 Beats Per

When the 2023 Oscar nominations were announced in January, Toronto actor turned filmmaker Sarah Polley tweeted a self-deprecating selfie with a look of surprise in a doctor’s office waiting room.

“Expectations were low for today,” Polley wrote. “Here I am at a routine doctor’s appointment. I really didn’t plan this day right.”

On Sunday night at the 95th Academy Awards in Hollywood, as Polley accepted the Best Adapted Screenplay award for her film “Women Talking,” her look of surprise had changed to one of sheer joy — and no small amount of vindication.

The film is an adaptation of an acclaimed Miriam Toews novel about a remote group of religious women discussing how to respond to sexual attacks by the men in their community.

For months, following the release of “Women Talking” during last fall’s film festival circuit (where it was first runner-up for the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival), Polley, 44, has had to resist dismissive comments that a title like “Women Talking” is somehow both banal and irksome, especially to men.

As Polley told Vanity Fair during awards season, when male customs agents would ask her to state her purpose of travel and Polley shared the title of her film, she was met with eye rolls and groans. After this happened around 20 times, “I kind of snapped” at Logan Airport in Boston, Polley said. “I just went, ‘If I told you there was a movie called “12 Angry Men,” would you go and see it?’ And he was like, ‘Maybe.’ I said, ‘Well, I just want you to sit with that.’”

On Sunday, from the Dolby Theatre stage, Polley addressed that experience in her acceptance speech.

“I just want to thank the academy for not being mortally offended by the words ‘women’ and ‘talking’ put so close together like that,” Polley said, grinning as she clutched her first Oscar after 15 years in the movie business. She was previously nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for her feature writing/directing debut “Away From Her” in 2008.

In her speech, Polley reminded the hundreds of people in the room — and the millions more watching worldwide — that the sexually abused women in her fact-based drama were taking action against their abusers “not just by talking but also by listening,” an important distinction. She might also have added that the women in her film, including characters played by Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara and Claire Foy, ultimately resolve to not just talk but also to do something about their situation.

Polley continued: “The last line of our film is delivered by a young woman to a new baby and she says, ‘Your story will be different from ours.’ It’s a promise, a commitment and an anchor, and it’s what I would like to say with all of my might to my three incredible kids — Eve, Isla and Amy — as they make their way through this complicated and beautiful world.”

It’s a tightrope Polley has tried to walk herself, over her many years not just an actor and filmmaker but also as a social activist, fighting against poverty and violence, while struggling to be heard over the din of louder and often male voices.

Her most famous role as an actor, in Atom Egoyan’s Oscar-nominated 1997 film “The Sweet Hereafter,” is playing a sexually abused girl in a remote town who reveals the truth about the circumstances of a tragic school bus crash that claimed many young lives.

Polley told me during an interview at TIFF last fall that it’s been a struggle to remain positive at times in her life and career.

“I’m an optimist, but I wasn’t always. I’ve outgrown my cynicism. And so I believe in people’s capacity to change. I really believe in people’s capacity to change their minds and shift, and to learn and unlearn …

“I’ve seen people who I’ve written off take responsibility and be accountable, and move in a very real and authentic way, and choose a different course.”

On Sunday night, Polley received a highly visible affirmation that she’s on the right road, one she will undoubtedly continue to follow as she continues her journey as both an artist and a public figure.
