In the second half of the 20th century a system of categorizing personalities into “Type A” and “Type B” gained mainstream pop-psychological traction. The obvious limitations of its binary, or at best linear, approach have seen the theory largely fall out of favor but sometimes, like when watching Selman Nacar’s sober, stressful second feature, “Hesitation Wound,” it’s hard not to be reminded of it. Defense attorney Canan (an outstanding Tülin Özen, avid and serious) is competitive, status-conscious, impatient, ambitious and hard-working to the point of work addiction. In other words, she’s the Type A-est Type A to ever have had a very hard day.

Nacar, who studied law himself, has written a screenplay that piles incident on incident, and moral quandary on moral quandary, each bumping into the rear of the next like a knock-on collision in rush hour traffic. But he directs with a spontaneity that means the drama never seems contrived, especially as conveyed in the considered realism of Tudor Panduru’s cinematography. Panduru, who has been responsible for some of Romania’s most deceptively handsome recent films (among them Cristian Mungiu’s “R.M.N.,” Radu Muntean’s “Intregalde” and Alexandru Belc’s “Metronom”) also shot Nacar’s well-received debut, “Between Two Dawns,” and between them, director and DP have developed a coolly restrained aesthetic that matches the film’s heroine in both elegance and intelligence.

Because even though she dresses rapidly this morning in the hospital room where her aged mother lies in an unresponsive state, Canan is always immaculately turned out, in a silk jade blouse or a soft teal sweater, under a lawyer’s gown or a tailored tweed coat topped with an efficient chignon. Her conservative but unmistakably expensive style is one of things that sets her apart from her more crumpled colleagues. It is visible evidence of her outsiderness, which many, including the judge on her trial, can easily interpret as arrogance (and perhaps they are not wrong). Many’s the reference made to Canan studying abroad, as though that experience has given her notions above her station, and certainly above the crumbling courtrooms and petty corruptions of Uşak, the small Turkish city to which she has only just returned.

The case she is defending is that of Musa (Oğulcan Arman Uslu), a factory worker accused of murdering his boss, who has the titular hesitation wounds (scars from suicide practice-runs) on his arms. Today is the final day for evidence before sentencing and a late-breaking witness could prove pivotal in establishing Musa’s innocence, if only he’d arrive. Or maybe Canan’s impassioned, forthright, clinical dismantling of the prosecution’s allegations would do the trick, if only she could get through it without the ceiling collapsing — the piteous state of the municipal buildings, especially compared to the pricey restoration of a nearby mosque, makes an eloquently offhand statement about a society in which the appearance of piety is more likely to gain political capital than a commitment to secular justice.

But while Canan has to dodge chunks of falling plaster at work the ceiling is also falling in, so to speak, in her personal life.  She argues with her sister (Gülçin Kültür Şahin) over stopping their comatose mother’s life support while her organs can still be donated in accordance with her wishes. It is yet another example of Canan holding on too tight to situations over which she has no control, as though through sheer force of personal competence she can force the dead back to life, the condemned back to innocence and the rotten back to a state of grace.

However Nacar, in collaboration with the riveting Özen, absolutely avoids making Canan the uncomplicated, self-sacrificing crusader that her dedication to her client and her mother might imply. We are never sure how much of her drive comes from social conscience or filial devotion, and how much from sheer, rigid pride and her savior complex. All of Canan’s interactions are adversarial, every conversation is a negotiation, and even the mildest exchange has to have a winner and loser. She would be a monster if it were not so clear that she is her own biggest victim. Having confined her outward expressions of distress to one hair-down, frustrated sob at a canteen table, in court later, Canan’s nose suddenly starts to bleed.

In images tinged with the blue of sadness, the green of decay and the bilious yellow of institutional hallways, Nacar makes remarkably suspenseful drama out of one hyper-committed woman’s refusal to curry sympathy, as she crosses Rubicon after ethical Rubicon in one 24-hour period. It is only with the slight slackening of focus in the film’s closing stages that Nacar’s otherwise deeply impressive command falters a little, ending “Hesitation Wound” on an atypically hesitant note, mid-countdown to what is either the defusing of its ticking time-bomb plot, or its detonation.

Call it the Shiv Roy effect, but in early summer 2023 it seemed like everyone was wearing monochromatic corporate-core ensembles, Meghan Markle included. Now, as summer draws to a close, the duchess is showing us how to transition our starchy white single-hue ensembles for fall.

While in Düsseldorf, Germany, where she’s supporting hubby Prince Harry’s sixth annual Invictus Games, Markle sported several monochromatic ’fits in fall-forward tones of cream, tawny brown, and navy. And on September 15, the 42-year-old arrived at the cycle medal ceremony in the perfect transitional ensemble for those early fall days: an eggshell button-down romper under a matching lightweight blazer. She styled the easy, breezy look with gold jewelry—hoops, a pendant necklace, and cuffs—and minimalist black accessories: a cross-body bag and braided slides.

Karwai Tang

The secret, as the duchess knows, to a monochromatic outfit that feels more “stealth wealth” and less “matching pajamas” is a variation in texture. Her canvas tie-front romper, for example, has a more relaxed vibe, while her tailored cream blazer adds structure to the look. This contrast creates depth and complexity to an otherwise simple outfit.

The latte-colored look Markle wore on September 14, consisting of a silk top and linen trousers, is another perfect example of texture play at work, as is the knit vest-and-denim combo, which she’s done in both white and black versions this week.

Call it the Shiv Roy effect, but

“Cobweb,” the Kim Jee-woon-directed satire that debuted at Cannes this year, has been cleared for theatrical release in its native Korea later this month. On Monday it saw off an injunction that sought to derail its hometown debut.

The film is a tongue in cheek tribute to the Korean movies of the 1970s and plays partly as a film within a film, jumping from color to black and white as it does so.

It stars Song Kang-ho (“Parasite,” “Broker”) as director Kim, who needs just two more days of reshoots to craft a new ending to his latest film (also called “Cobweb”) so that it will no longer be the trashy potboiler everyone thought he was making. However, there is turmoil on Kim’s set and he has to deal with regular interference from the interventionist censorship authorities.

With the reputation of the real-world director Kin Jee-woon (“A Bittersweet Life,” “The Good The Bad The Weird”) and Song’s star-power, the film has been widely presold in international markets.

The family of the late Kim Ki-young, one of Korea’s best-known directors from the time of the pre-democracy era, however, saw too much of a likeness in “Cobweb” to their ancestor and said that the movie portrayed the late Kim Ki-young (1960’s “The Housemaid”) in a negative light.

Naming production company Anthology Studios as the defendant, Kim Dong-yang, the son of Kim Ki-young, filed for an injunction against the release of “Cobweb.”

A hearing took place on Thursday last week at the Seoul Central District Court but did not immediately deliver a ruling.

“Even director Kim Jee-woon, who made the film, has said in a past interview that he took the late director Kim Ki-young as [an inspiration],” appellant Kim said at the hearing. The family further claimed that at Cannes the film’s central character was called Kim Ki-yeol, but has subsequently been changed to the less specific Director Kim. The character also wore glasses and smoked a pipe, as had the late Kim Ki-yong.

However, Kim Jee-woon has said that the film is not a biography of a real person, and that the character is a composite of multiple filmmakers from that era. Anthology further said that the screening also carried a disclaimer explaining that “Cobweb” has no relationship to a specific person.

On Monday, sales agency Barunson E&A revealed that Anthology and the Kim family had undergone a day of arbitration and reached an out-of-court settlement. That means the injunction suit can be dropped and the Korean release will go ahead as scheduled. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed and are subject to confidentiality clauses.

The Sept. 27 release date makes “Cobweb” one of the front runners to capture the big box office earnings of the Chuseok (or Korean Thanksgiving) holiday period. The holiday has this year been extended by a day bridging to the Oct. 3. National Foundation Day.

Theatrical releases of the film across other parts of Asia-Pacific will follow shortly after. These include The Philippines, Australia and Singapore in the second week of October and Thailand on Oct. 19.

Five U.S. detainees were being taken to a Qatari aircraft to fly out of Iran on Monday in a swap for five Iranians detained in the U.S. thanks to a Doha-brokered deal between the arch foes that also unfroze US$6 billion of Tehran’s funds.

The Qatari plane was on standby after the U.S. and Iran were told, according to a source briefed on the matter, that the funds had been transferred to accounts in Qatar. “U.S. detainees are being transported to the Qatari jet,” the source said.

The funds’ release triggered an exchange sequence agreed after months of talks between the United States and Iran, who are at odds over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and other issues.

The five Americans with dual nationality are due to fly to Doha and then on to the U.S. Two relatives are also expected to be on the flight. “They are in good health,” an Iranian official briefed on the process said about the detainees.

In return, five Iranians detained in the U.S. will be released. The Iranian Foreign ministry spokesperson said two Iranians would return to Iran while two would stay in the U.S. at their request. One detainee would join his family in a third country, he added.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said the funds, blocked in South Korea after U.S. sanctions on Iran were hardened in 2018, would be available to Tehran on Monday. Under the deal, Qatar will ensure it is spent on humanitarian goods.

There was no immediate public U.S. comment.

The deal will remove a major irritant between the U.S., which brands Tehran a state sponsor of terrorism, and Iran, which calls Washington the “Great Satan.”

But they remain deeply divided on other issues ranging from Iran’s nuclear program and its influence around the region to U.S. sanctions and America’s military presence in the Gulf.

Qatar, a tiny but hugely wealthy Gulf Arab energy producer, has sought to raise its global profile, hosting the soccer World Cup last year and carving out a role in international diplomacy. The Sunni Muslim nation hosts a big U.S. military base but has also forged close ties with Shi’ite Muslim Iran.

Doha hosted at least eight rounds of talks with Iranian and U.S. negotiators sitting in separate hotels, speaking via shuttle diplomacy, a source previously told Reuters.

Under the agreement, Doha agreed to monitor how Iran spends the unfrozen funds to ensure the cash is spent on humanitarian goods, such as food and medicine, and not any items under U.S. sanctions.

The transfer of Iran’s funds has drawn criticism from U.S. Republicans who say President Joe Biden, a Democrat, is in effect paying a ransom for U.S. citizens.

The White House has defended the deal.

The U.S. dual citizens to be released include Siamak Namazi, 51, and Emad Sharqi, 59, both businessmen, and Morad Tahbaz, 67, an environmentalist who also holds British nationality. They were released from prison and put under house arrest last month.

A fourth U.S. citizen was also released into house arrest, while a fifth was already under house arrest. Their identities have not been disclosed.

Iranian officials have named the five Iranians to be released by the U.S. as Mehrdad Moin-Ansari, Kambiz Attar-Kashani, Reza Sarhangpour-Kafrani, Amin Hassanzadeh and Kaveh Afrasiabi. Two Iranian officials previously said that Afrasiabi would remain in the United States but had not mentioned others.

Ties between Washington and Tehran have been boiling since Donald Trump, a Republican, pulled the U.S. out of a nuclear deal between Iran and global powers when he was president in 2018. Reaching another nuclear deal has gained little traction since, as Biden prepares for the 2024 U.S. election.

Story continues below advertisement

As a first step in the deal, Washington waived sanctions to allow the transfer of US$6 billion in Iranian funds from South Korea to Qatar. The funds were blocked in South Korea, normally one of Iran’s largest oil customers, when Washington imposed sweeping financial sanctions on Tehran and the cash could not be transferred.

Bluebird, an imprint of U.K. book giant Pan Macmillan, has said it will pause all future publishing with Russell Brand in light of the allegations that have emerged against the comedian, TV host and actor.

In a joint investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches, four women have come forward with allegations of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse against Brand between 2006 and 2013, all of which he has denied.

“These are very serious allegations and in the light of them, Bluebird has taken the decision to pause all future publishing with Russell Brand,” Bluebird said in a statement reported by publishing trade magazine The Bookseller.

Brand has published titles with Bluebird since 2017, including Recovery: Freedom from our Addictions and Mentors: How to Help and Be Helped. Recovery: The Workbook was due to be published this December. Previously, he published My Booky Wook, his bestselling autobiography, with Hodder & Stoughton in 2007, and Revolution, about politics, with Random House (Century in the U.K.) in 2014.

Alongside Bluebird, the Curtis Brown-owned literary and talent agency Tavistock Wood has said it has “terminated all professional ties” to Brand. According to The Times, one of the accusers approached Brand’s agent at Tavistock Wood in 2020 with her allegations, receiving only a “very aggressive” letter from Brand’s lawyers in response. After being contacted by the Times as part of its investigation with the same allegations, Tavistock Wood cut its linked to Brand.

“Russell Brand categorically and vehemently denied the allegation made in 2020, but we now believe we were horribly misled by him. TW has terminated all professional ties to Brand,” it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the U.K.’s women’s charity Trevi — which helps women affected by violence and abuse — has ended its association with Brand. It announced in 2022 that it would be working with him and his Stay Free Foundationt.

R.E.M. had been a band for 24 years when they released their worst album, 2004’s Around the Sun, a record that magnified that aging act’s growing weaknesses and succumbed to sheer tedium. The National, perhaps not coincidentally, were also marking 24 years together when they released First Two Pages of Frankenstein in April this year. While not as disastrously dull as Around the Sun, that record dragged in similar ways. Both albums over-relied on programmed drums, and both gambled on the misguided hope that studio refinement might prove a fair substitute for live energy. It’s hard to imagine many Taylor Swift fans introduced to the National through her feature on Frankenstein became converts.

R.E.M. responded to their misfire by taking a few years to recalibrate and returning with a rock record. The National have taken the opposite approach. Just five months after Frankenstein, they’ve released a companion album, Laugh Track, featuring material written alongside its predecessor. True to its mirrored cover art, Laugh Track plays largely like The Next Two Pages of Frankenstein, continuing its predecessor’s subdued mood and reclusive purview, with singer Matt Berninger further chronicling depressive withdrawal and deteriorating relationships (“Friendships are melting/Nothing is helping,” he despairs). That may disappoint fans hoping that the muted reception to Frankenstein might inspire the band to shake things up, but Laugh Track does fine-tune its predecessor’s approach, albeit subtly. The band recorded most of it after Frankenstein, using their tour behind that album to road test and refine the stray ideas from its writing sessions, so the execution is slightly tweaked, less rigid, more freeform.

Most noticeably, drummer Bryan Devendorf returns to a real kit after Frankenstein primarily relegated him to machines. That’s a huge upgrade: Devendorf’s drumming has long been the 5-Hour Energy shot that keeps this band from drifting into slumber. Even though he’s rarely granted much volume to play with, he packs drama into even some of the record’s slowest songs; you can hear where the applause is supposed to go. His fidgety, racing percussion introduces intrigue to the otherwise staid “Turn Off the House,” and he propels “Space Invader” toward the kind of cathartic outro this band used to throw down all the time but now reserves only for the rare nights when the sitters are free and nobody has work the next morning.

As has become the norm on National albums, there are some guests. Phoebe Bridgers returns on the title track, a sweet little song about looking on the extremely relative bright side, and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon shadows Berninger on “Weird Goodbyes,” the string-kissed 2022 single conspicuously left off of Frankenstein. Big names, both, but they’re basically accompanists; their voices may be on these songs but their fingerprints are not. That’s not the case with Rosanne Cash, who plays Lady Gaga to Berninger’s Bradley Cooper on the late-album standout “Crumble.” It’s the rare late-period National song you can imagine somebody other than Berninger crushing at karaoke.

Laugh Track could use more changeups like this, because even when it locks into a blissful, easy groove that Frankenstein struggled to sustain, it can’t shake the sense of sameness that’s haunted the National’s last few releases. Did we really need this many more sullen piano ballads? Or another song about being no good at parties? The group’s last nine records have already so exhaustively excavated Berninger’s psyche that there’s not much left to reveal.

The album saves its biggest departure for last: “Smoke Detector,” a Velvet Underground-style jam where Berninger spits incensed, abstractionist poetry over gnarly guitars for nearly eight minutes: “Make a list of your loved ones in order of height/Laugh at the blackbirds in the knack of the night,” he seethes. Hastily written at a soundcheck just months ago, it was the last song completed for Laugh Track, and it feels like it came from a completely different album. After so much composed beauty, its rawness is a corrective, pointing toward a way forward now that they’ve purged the last of Frankenstein’s material from their system. This band still has a fierce rock record in them. Maybe next time they’ll make it.

Wild Reality TV Moments I Can't Believe

When some 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike in early May, screenwriter Ed Solomon, like so many of his peers, worried about his creative juices stagnating.

During the two previous writers strikes, in 1988 and 2008, Solomon — whose credits include “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Men in Black” and “Now You See Me” — had taken classes, enrolling in a film school summer session and a series of fiction writing workshops.

“I was thinking, ‘What can I take that would keep sort of poking me?’” he says. “I was just hoping to keep pushing myself and challenging myself.”

As he looked around for similarly stimulating courses earlier this year, Solomon realized that, having worked for decades in Hollywood, he already had access to many of the best film and television writers in town.

What if, instead of taking a course, he helped lead one? And what if he offered it for free to other writers as a way to foster a sense of community and raise money to help those adversely affected by the strike?

On June 10, Solomon pitched the idea to his 94,000 followers on the platform formerly known as Twitter: “If I were to do a series of Zoom workshops during the strike (was thinking Q&A sessions on various parts of the craft of writing), would anyone show up?”

Three months and a dozen workshops later, the answer has proven to be a resounding yes.

Launched in partnership with the Black List, a platform dedicated to empowering Hollywood writers, Solomon’s weekly series, Word by Word, has featured a who’s who of screenwriting luminaries, including Judd Apatow, Jesse Armstrong, Eric Roth, J.J. Abrams, Lena Dunham, Amy Schumer, Liz Hannah, Sharon Horgan, Craig Mazin, Neil Gaiman, Adele Lim, Chris Miller, Phil Lord, Tracy Oliver and Christopher McQuarrie.

Casual and free-flowing, the two-hour sessions jump off from topics like “Fear, Failure, and F—ing Up” and “Outlining: A Necessary Evil?” into open-ended, often startlingly candid conversations about the agonies and ecstasies and nuts-and-bolts mechanics of the writing process.

Clockwise from left, Ed Solomon, Megan Halpern, Liz Hannah and Kemp Powers.

(The Black List)

With each new episode of Word by Word — which is primarily aimed at writers but open to anyone at no charge — the audience has steadily grown through social media and word-of-mouth, with more than 1,000 people tuning in for a recent Zoom session featuring Charlie Kaufman and Boots Riley.

By soliciting donations from attendees, Word by Word has so far raised roughly $55,000 for three strike funds — the Union Solidarity Coalition, the Entertainment Community Fund and the Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund — to help not only writers but also crew members and others affected by the work stoppage.

As soon as he saw Solomon’s tweet, Franklin Leonard, who launched the Black List in 2005 to spotlight the best unproduced screenplays, knew he wanted to get involved. Within moments, Leonard sent Solomon a direct message to start figuring out how they could collaborate. With the help of Black List senior vice president Megan Halpern and others on the company’s team, Word by Word was up and running two weeks later, with Susanna Fogel and Lena Dunham as its first guests.

“My team and I feel very lucky be in this position where we can continue to do the work we’re doing to support the writing community,” says Leonard, who is not a WGA member but has been on the picket lines twice with the rest of his company. “I’ve said since long before the strike that writers are the most underappreciated community in the industry. So to be party to that work is a real joy, even if this is not the work that any of us would like to be doing — and shouldn’t have to be doing.”

Three men and a women in a Zoom screen

From the outset, the goal of Word by Word was to go beyond the usual advice doled out to aspiring screenwriters.

“Our thing was, we don’t want this to be something that you could either read in a book or find better taught elsewhere,” says Solomon, who named the workshop in honor of Anne Lamott’s much-loved writing advice book “Bird by Bird.” “Really, it’s about trying to create access to the inner lives and inner processes of people whose work I admire and who are willing to share it.”

The Word by Word workshops have offered plenty of practical tips and hard-earned wisdom about the craft. (The second half of each two-hour session is devoted to questions from the audience.)

Riley, who wrote and directed “Sorry to Bother You,” detailed his daily ritual of writing from 6 to 10 a.m. daily on a laptop with no internet connection to prevent distractions. McQuarrie, whose recent credits include “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” emphasized the importance of tethering expository dialogue to character conflict to avoid boring an audience, explaining, “Information is the death of emotion.”

With little in the way of formal structure and often surprising guest pairings, the conversations frequently veer in unexpected directions. Paired with Abrams on a recent episode, Apatow recounted the inauspicious beginning of his own filmmaking career: dropping out of USC film school after he won “The Dating Game” so he could collect his prize of a trip to Acapulco. Abrams revealed that in his younger years he and some friends had once stolen a Newsweek magazine featuring Burt Reynolds on the cover from Reynolds’ own mailbox, only to return it later out of a sense of guilt.

A man and three women on a Zoom screen

At one point during her episode with McQuarrie, Schumer’s 4-year-old son crawled onto her lap and told a joke. “Have you seen the new pirate movie?” he asked McQuarrie. “It’s rated Arrrr.”

“People are seeing something they haven’t seen before,” says Halpern, who runs the Black List’s screenwriting lab program. “When you’re paired with someone unexpected, it’s a really easy way to get into unexpected conversations so it doesn’t just feel like you’re listening to the same stories and the same advice that they’ve given before. It allows them to have a little bit more wiggle room.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, the psychological torment of the blank page and the fear of failure have been frequently recurring themes on Word by Word. Kaufman, who won an original screenplay Oscar for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and is one of the industry’s most revered writers, spoke of his own relentless inner critic. “I have a lack of confidence,” he said. “Whenever I embark on something new, it’s a struggle.”

Solomon says that shared sense of self-doubt and creative angst, no matter whether one has written a hit movie or series or just aspires to someday, is a key part of Word by Word’s appeal.

“One of the most heartening things about this is how much people who are earlier in the trajectory of their careers feel validated by the fact that they can see themselves in these guests,” says Solomon, who most recently created the Max limited series “Full Circle,” his third collaboration with director Steven Soderbergh. “We’ve had some remarkable people on, and not one person feels like they’ve got their s— together. Everyone feels like they’re still learning the craft.”

With no end in sight for Hollywood’s historic double strike, Solomon and his Black List partners are continuing to book weekly episodes; upcoming guests include Ben Stiller, Patton Oswalt, Spike Jonze, Janicza Bravo, Callie Khouri and Sarah Silverman. “We haven’t had hesitation from anyone,” says Solomon. “Everyone has been like, ‘How can I help?’”

Looking beyond the strike, the team behind Word by Word are planning to keep the series going once everyone gets back to work. “It may be a bit more intermittent once the strike ends, because scheduling will get more difficult, but continuing this in some form after the strike is a no-brainer for us,” says Leonard. (An announcement is coming soon on making previous episodes available.)

Solomon sees the series eventually expanding beyond just writers to include guests from other creative fields, while still sticking to its mission to raise funds to support the entertainment community.

“I think you could substitute any art form for writing in these conversations,” he says. “Writing a song, building a piece of fine cabinetry, being an architect, dreaming up how to make a certain vintage of wine — I’m of the belief that there are more similarities among those than differences. The idea post-strike would be to continue to raise money for these funds, because they can and will be used in future work stoppages. So the more we can help, the better.”

Meanwhile, Solomon is getting all the creative stimulation he could have hoped for from any class and then some. “Getting to talk to amazing writers, you realize that there are so many different ways to approach the process,” he says. “You get so embedded in your own process that you forget that what you do is just habit that gets deeper and deeper and deeper. So having these conversations with people has really opened up my world in a way.”

DC is set to release a trio of exciting animated movies in 2024. While the live-action movie side of DC media has had its ups and downs over several decades of projects, the brand has always had a solid and successful footing in the world of animated features. Starting all the way back with Max Fleischer’s Superman serials in the 1940s, animation has been a core part of DC’s movie and television series release strategy. This has resulted in several now-classic projects, from Batman: The Animated Series to Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.

Warner Bros. regularly releases several DC animated films a year, and three are currently set to arrive in 2024 (though none have set release dates at writing). With two being adaptations of beloved graphic novels and the other being a major re-imagining of one of DC’s core heroes, DC’s slate is diverse and exciting and should give viewers a lot to look forward to from 2024’s DC animated adventures. Here are all three DC animated movies arriving in 2024.

Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios (TBA 2024)

The upcoming animated movie Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios is a true DC Elseworlds tale, re-imagining the Dark Knight as a young Aztec boy named Yohualli Coatl (voiced by Horacio Garcia Rojas). After the murder of his parents by Spanish Conquistadors, Yohualli becomes an ancient, Meso-American version of the Caped Crusader. Batman Azteca is directed and co-written by Juan Jose Meza-Leon, and while few other major details have been revealed about it, the character re-invention it gives to Batman is a unique one that makes it a very intriguing DC animated movie.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths (TBA 2024)

Crisis on Infinite Earths DC Comics

DC’s famous multiverse story Crisis On Infinite Earths will get the animated treatment in Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths. With the Anti-Monitor threatening the stability of the multiverse, it is up to the heroes of multiple DC universes to join forces to stop him. Crisis On Infinite Earths was previously the basis for the CW’s live-action crossover of DC movies and TV shows, and hopefully, Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths will bring the same multiversal magic. The movie is the first animated adaptation of the titular DC comics event and is the eleventh entry in the Tomorrowverse DC animated timeline.

Watchmen (TBA 2024)

Watchmen movie pic

Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s acclaimed graphic novel Watchmen finally made it to the big screen in 2009 in the form of Zack Snyder’s first DC movie (albeit with the notoriously adaptation-averse Moore being uncredited). The upcoming animated DC movie Watchmen is set to retell the story for new audiences, in which Rorschach investigates the murder of the Comedian in a world where superheroes have been outlawed, while Dr. Manhattan has become an all-powerful being. Like Snyder’s Watchmen, the animated Watchmen movie will be rated R, and presumably, it will stick with the original DC graphic novel ending that the movie changed.

Summary DC is set to

Star Fox programmer Dylan Cuthbert says he’s sure the series will return at some point.

Cuthbert previously worked at Argonaut Software and was one of the main programmers on the original Star Fox (aka Starwing).

Despite being one of Nintendo‘s most recognisable brands, there hasn’t been a new Star Fox game in seven years – the last was Star Fox Zero on Wii U, which was met with a mixed critical response.

In a recent interview with VGC, we asked Cuthbert if he expected to see Star Fox coming back at some point soon.

Cuthbert replied that he did, but stressed that he didn’t feel previous Star Fox games had managed to capture the feel of the first game.

“Oh, I’m sure [it’ll return]”, Cuthbert told us. “I mean, they keep trying, don’t they? They keep trying, not quite achieving the original.

“But I think that’s one thing – my opinion is that the original was born out of the UK Amiga-style 3D at the time, games like Star Glider or Carrier Command. It was born out of those and a bit of the Star Wars Arcade game, combined with Namco’s Starblade.

“And then there was all the Nintendo character building, all the characters and stuff, making it very family friendly.”

Namco’s arcade game Starblade was one of the inspirations for Star Fox

Cuthbert explained that, in his opinion, modern Star Fox games have each missed at least one of these elements, meaning none have recaptured the tone of the original.

“It’s the combination of all those things that I suppose was what made Star Fox what it was,” he told us. “So some of the more recent titles – maybe, say, the Namco version, for example – are all great games, but there’s always that one element missing, that sort of UK old-school 3D shooting game element missing from it.

“So that one was very slick – they got the Starblade side of it perfect, but it’s a combination of all [elements], you kind of need it all in there to make it work.

“And then, of course, the one that Rare made, Star Fox Adventures, that was also a good attempt but that was too British, it didn’t have the Starblade side of it.

“So I think Star Fox is a very complex title, because you’ve got to have all those elements in place, and that gives it the atmosphere it needs to make it really work.”

Last year Star Fox character designer Takaya Imamura called on Nintendo to port Wii U title Star Fox Zero to the Switch, something its developer PlatinumGames has said it’s open to doing.

Asked if he was bored of talking about Star Fox after all these years, Cuthbert noted to us that he was wearing a Star Fox shirt, then replied: “I think it’s still a pretty original title really, isn’t it?

“There isn’t really an equivalent game to Star Fox even now, so I think that’s why it’s kind of stuck around and kept in people’s minds. It’s weird, but it’s remained a fairly unique title and I think that’s really cool.

“But I’m not bored of Star Fox, really. It was a fun project, it was fun to make, I was very young at the time but it was just a really good experience all around. Just one year of development time, everything packed in there, and there was only really a handful of us working on it.”
