Andrew Lloyd Webber announced that due to his son’s illness, the famous composer will not be in attendance for Broadway’s “Bad Cinderella” opening night on Thursday.
Webber released a statement Sunday, explaining his son is “critically ill” with cancer, and the musical theater veteran will be taking the time away to be with his son and family.
“I am absolutely devastated to say that my eldest son Nick is critically ill,” Webber said. “As my friends and family know, he has been fighting gastric cancer for the last 18 months, and Nick is now hospitalized.”
Webber continued, “I therefore have not been able to attend the recent previews of ‘Bad Cinderella’ and as things stand, I will not be able to cheer on its wonderful cast, crew, and orchestra on opening night this Thursday. We are all praying that Nick will turn the corner. He is bravely fighting with his indomitable humor, but at the moment my place is with him and the family.”
In addition to the musical “Bad Cinderella,” Webber is also working on the anthem for the coronation of King Charles III.
Webber was also slated to attend the press event for “Bad Cinderella” on Wednesday, which is also his 75th birthday, in New York City. The musical’s opening night is Thursday at the Imperial Theatre.
He is best known for the music and libretto for the longest-running Broadway production ever, “The Phantom of the Opera.” Other well-known shows from Webber include “Cats,” “Evita,” “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
The composer is an EGOT winner as he has won a Primetime Emmy Award, three Grammy Awards, an Oscar and six Tony Awards.

The estate of rapper Coolio announced plans to release a posthumous album later this year with singles the Grammy award-winning artist was working on before his death, according to the Associated Press.
The album titled “Long Live Coolio” is the first posthumous album release from the “Gangsta’s Paradise” hip-hop star. The first single, “TAG ‘You It,’” was released on Friday and featured California rappers Too $hort and DJ Wino.
The music video showed Coolio and Too $hort in a boxing ring as women twerked. It marks the last piece of visual content Coolio appeared in before his death from cardiac arrest on Sept. 28, 2022, at age 59.
In 1995, Coolio won a Grammy for best solo rap performance for “Gangsta’s Paradise,” which came from the “Dangerous Minds” soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer film. He also performed the theme music, “Aw, Here It Goes!” for the ’90’s Nickelodeon sitcom “Kenan & Kel.”
In all, Coolio was nominated for six Grammys and sold over 17 million records worldwide.

SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers for all episodes of “Swarm” on Amazon Prime Video.
Rumors of a Donald Glover project about a “Beyoncé-like figure” have been swirling in Hollywood for at least two years. And while no one involved will say Knowles’ name — though Glover has called out the Beyhive and co-creator and showrunner Janine Nabers has spoken about “a certain pop star from Houston” — that series is finally here.
“Swarm” stars Dominique Fishback as Dre, an emotionally stunted superfan of a singer named Ni’Jah (Nirine S. Brown), who is a bit unhealthily obsessed with her own sister, Marissa (Chloe Bailey). When a fight between the sisters separates them for a night, Dre goes out to celebrate Ni’Jah’s surprise album drop (clearly inspired by “Lemonade,” in which Beyoncé sings about being cheated on) while Marissa discovers that she’s being cheated on by her boyfriend, Khalid (Damson Idris). Unable to reach Dre for support, she dies by suicide.
After mysteriously being turned away from Marissa’s funeral by “the family,” Dre murders Khalid, both for betraying Marissa and for not respecting Ni’Jah. (It seems she’s beginning to conflate the two.) The rest of the series sees her on a rampage, of mourning Marissa and killing Ni’Jah detractors while desperately hoping to meet the star one day. In the finale, she finally does — sort of. After hanging up her serial killer’s hat and taking on a new identity, she spends thousands of dollars that should have gone toward rent on Ni’Jah tickets. This upsets her girlfriend, Rashida (Kiersey Clemons), who hates Ni’Jah, and Dre has another mental breakdown. She murders Rashida and burns the body, then realizes she’s burned the tickets too, so she goes to the concert and stabs a scalper to get his tickets. Dre makes it to the front row, then manages to hop onto the stage. As security rushes in to apprehend her, Ni’Jah stops them and embraces Dre — but it’s Marissa’s face that Dre sees.
Nabers spoke to Variety about how she and Glover invented Dre and all the bodies buried along the way.
Donald Glover and you have spoken about how the idea “Swarm” came from, imagining what it would look like if the serial killer subgenre focused on a Black woman instead of a white man. What were you initially envisioning as you created the character of Dre?
The terminology we used was “alien.” This woman is an alien in her own world. If you look at the pilot, when she gets to Khalid’s house, there’s aliens on TV. Right. That’s a through line with her throughout the series. We really looked to “The Piano Teacher” for inspiration. Donald introduced that movie to me, and it blew my mind. It centers around a woman who has a very everyday way of living her life on the surface, and then when you peel back the layers of her complicated psychology, you unearth a completely different type of human that is very alien-feeling. But me being from Houston and Donald being from Atlanta, we wanted to filter it through a Southern, Black female perspective. It is a little bit like a sister “Atlanta” when you look at the weird family relationships.
In the second to last episode, which is styled like a true crime documentary, it’s revealed that Dre had been in foster care before getting adopted into Marissa’s family and sent back again for her violent behavior. We don’t get any detail about how she ended up in the system or what it was like for her. Did you ever imagine more of her backstory than that?
The documentary episode, in the vein of “Atlanta,” felt a little bit like a step out, where you can intellectualize what you’ve seen — the foster system and this idea of Black women falling through the cracks– from a personal perspective. Anyone who’s Black and from the South has some sort of experience with the foster system, whether it be friends that have dealt with it, family they’ve had. It’s a very real thing. Donald grew up with a perspective on that. I grew up with a perspective on that.
But we were really focused on not sharing a lens into her trauma in a real way. You can intellectualize trauma, but we didn’t want to dramatize what it was like before we are introduced to Dre that led her to become who she is. That’s what I think a lot of Black storytelling can lean toward, but we really just wanted to let people fill in their own gaps to the story. There’s a mystery as to how she got to where she was and that’s okay. It’s okay to not know everything.
Speaking of how race functions in the show, I’m curious about the white characters. When Dre goes out to dance to the new Ni’Jah album, she loses her virginity to a guy at the club. Why is he white?
I originally saw him as a Black guy. There’s an actor in the show [Byron Bowers] that I wanted for that role initially, and I pitched that to Donald, and Donald was like, “We could do that, or we could put him as this other character that feels like it would lean more towards a white guy, and let’s put a white guy in this role that feels like it would lean towards a Black guy.” Our character in Episode 3 was written as a white guy, and we subvert that a little bit too. It’s really smart and funny, because you wouldn’t see someone like her losing her virginity to a white guy. And you’ve never seen a Black guy talk about an eating disorder.
Quantrell D. Colbert/Prime Video
What about the the character played by Paris Jackson, daughter of Michael Jackson? Hailey presents as white but calls herself Black because she has one Black grandparent? Was that role written for Paris, or did she come in later?
Carmen Cuba, our casting director, was fantastic. She pitched Paris Jackson and we all like fell out. We were like, “Exactly. That’s exactly what we’re talking about.”
Paris was great. She’s a professional. She came in and asked all the right questions. I’m a Jewish woman, she’s identifies as Jewish, so we bonded about that. And she trusted us. She was like, “I understand what this role is, and here’s how I’m gonna approach it.” She really just owned it this character of a light-passing biracial woman who is really intent on letting everyone know about her Blackness.
Dre killed Khalid to avenge Marissa, but they had also disagreed about Ni’Jah. That makes Hailey’s abusive boyfriend, and later Hailey herself, Dre’s only murders that have nothing to do with Ni’Jah.
This show is an examination of a character and her unpredictability. We’ve seen the pilot. She has this sister who’s in an unhealthy relationship with a man. We see how that plays out. We enter Episode 2, and we see a little bit of that also, right? So you think this is a story about a Black woman who defends her girlfriends and sisters at all costs. If men get in the way, they’re taken down. Right?
We see her take down the boyfriend, but again, you subvert the narrative. You see what she does to Hailey as another way to kind of subvert that narrative a little bit and to keep the audience on their toes. Like, wait a minute, what’s this show about?
Food plays an interesting role in the show. Dre eats a pie with her hands after killing Khalid and eats pretzels while a client masturbates in front of her, among other bizarre moments. Where did that come from?
When you look at serial killers in history, there’s always some weird staple that they have. Dahmer worked at a chocolate factory and they’re pretty certain he disposed of their bodies in the chocolate. The Night Stalker would break into people’s homes and go through their refrigerators. We talked a lot about food. What’s a fun way, and a weird way, and a grotesque way to show her relationship to something that’s passionate? And it could be funny. Food was it.
Dominique is such a disciplined actress in what she eats, and is just so particular, so she came at it with a lot of thought and energy. It really feels meme-able, like something that could really stick in terms of the way people talk about her as a character, and her “isms.”
Dre has several strange sexual experiences throughout the show until we see her become Tony and settle into a long-term and relatively normal relationship with Rashida (Kiersey Clemons), who hates Ni’Jah. What were you trying to say about Dre’s sexuality?
We knew that we wanted to start her off as a virgin. In a lot of horror stories, the protagonist, if she’s a female, is a virgin. So there’s a way of subverting that: “Oh, is this the story of a girl who loses her virginity and becomes awakened?” We’re setting up this story of her sexuality, and when she loses her virginity, it’s fine. It is what it is. But the thing that actually sparks her sensuality, the thing that actually makes her come alive, is this violent act.
Because this is a limited series, we see Dre go through different iterations of her character. By the time we get to the finale, she is the most confident that she’s been. She’s grounded in her own skin. And that had a lot to do with her journey as a murderer and her relationship with social media. When you meet her in Episode 7, she’s not on her phone. She’s not focused on Ni’Jah. She feels like someone who’s in remission. The fact that she is living very confidently as Tony — in a grounded, real way without any labels — is part of that. This relationship with Rashida is part of that. It’s about coming into your own sense of self. Tony is her at her truest, most humane, present, grounded form.

Chris Reel/Prime Video
But ultimately, she loses touch again. She kills Rashida for not liking Ni’Jah, before the hallucinatory sequence at the Ni’Jah concert. Was the story always going to end this way?
Yeah. Because every episode, with the exception of Episode 4, has a true foundation for its murder. We found a murder in 2018 that took place in the outskirts of Georgia with a young woman that was brutally killed and discarded in some sort of kind of like desert, woodsy area. That was a white woman, but we did our own thing. All of that is based on real situations.
The ending is supposed to be a little bit of a full circle moment, as emotionally jarring and upsetting as it comes off. We started here, and now we’re here, but we kind see why she had to take this journey to get to where she is. In the pilot, she says, “When we meet Ni’Jah, we’ll be driven to her house. We’ll go have dinner.” And Episode 7 is that dinner — in her mind.

Love Aaj Kal
Cast: Kartik Aaryan, Sara Ali Khan, Randeep Hooda, Aarushi Sharma
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Love, as they say, is a many splendoured things and Imtiaz Ali as a director has explored and impressed the auds many a time with its myriad cinematic renditions.
This time, however, Ali’s Love Aaj Kal’s reprised version of the same theme of love across different generations is disappointing. With a name and general plot-structure akin to the first outing, comparisons are inevitable. But, while this Millennial-focused love story does capture modern love’s quirkiness, it certainly lacks the zing that the previous Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone offered.
This second round of love and longing in Love Aaj Kal has two parallel romantic tracks —one between Raghu (Randeep Hooda and Kartik Aaryan as his younger self) and Leena (Aarushi Sharma) from the 1990s, while the second one is set in present times features Veer (Kartik Aaryan) and Zoe (Sara Ali Khan). So far, so good.
Raghu and Leena’s is a hark back to small-town romances in 1990, the decade of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, complete with a romantic scandal and school socials. In fact, this is the story with emotional heft and genuineness that ought to have been the heart of the film.
The second thread about a millennial romance featuring Zoe, a young girl focused on a grand career fuelled by her mother’s (Simone Singh) constant warnings to not throw it all away for a guy; the ever eager to please Veer.
As the famed truism goes, opposites attract and we see the unlikely muddleheaded romance blossom in a co-working space run by Raghu (Randeep Hooda). This too by itself could have been a palatable enough story, alas, the intercutting of the two love stories does not result in a heady mix. Instead, it stymies the narrative flow for both. The deliberate cheeriness of the younger romance, and the cynicism of the older one pull in different directions instead of dovetailing into a unanimous conclusion.
Ali’s writing is good in parts but he packs in too much. Cinema writing is a clever combination of both show and tell. The writing in this film, therefore, obviously from the perspective of a wry observer, should have allowed a lot more room to show than the telling the tale. All the characters (Leena being the sole exception) talk a lot, theorizing on what love is or can be and it gets tiresome after a point of time. Love Aaj Kal lacks the easy, charming and simple-minded romance of Ali’s earlier films.
Kartik Aaryan, best known for anti-girlfriend rants in his earlier outings takes on a far more subdued role and does make a go of it. He shows an ability to pull of quieter, more sensitive roles with success too. Sara Ali Khan, the star of the film is her confident self and one can see why she would be the perfect choice for Zoe. However, the missing cadences in an otherwise sincere performance make it fall short. Randeep Hooda and newcomer Aarushi Sharma are extremely watchable despite playing second fiddle to the lead couple in this ode to modern romance.
Matters of the heart are tricky as are films on the subject and in this one, despite everyone’s best efforts, the cupid’s arrow misses the mark.

Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis and Chris Tucker scored a standing ovation at South by Southwest on Saturday night with their closing night film. “Air” was an immediate MVP, even without the attendance of its subject, basketball legend Michael Jordan.
One year after “Everything Everywhere All at Once” debuted at SXSW on its way to seven Oscar wins, the Austin festival launched another major crowd pleaser.
“Air,” directed by Affleck and written by Alex Convery, received not only rapturous applause when its credits rolled, but also sustained cheering throughout the inspirational film — particularly in scenes involving Davis as Deloris Jordan, negotiating with Nike’s Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) for her son’s worth.
The film follows the origin story of Nike’s Air Jordan shoe line, which began with Vaccaro’s strong belief in Michael Jordan (Damian Young) when he was just a rookie. On top of directing, Affleck starred in the film as Nike co-founder Phil Knight, and he credited his co-stars for the pride he felt in the finished product.
“My entire directing strategy is to find brilliant people and say, ‘Just do it!’” Affleck said in the post-screening Q&A, playing on Nike’s famous slogan. “I’m not kidding. I feel like I just got to bear witness to all this performance and energy and their own authorship that they brought.”
“I’m lucky enough to be part of telling this story that has a resonance about value and worth and things far beyond what I can pass for authorship, into the deeper parts of this country and how we regard ourselves and one another,” he continued.”
Viola Davis — who Affleck called “the best actor in the world” during his opening remarks — said it was an honor to have played Deloris.
“I think she was doing what we mothers do. We believe in our kids more than anything else,” she said. “My mom was born in 1943. Deloris was born in 1940. She was born in a generation of people whose dreams were their kids. It’s the height of Jim Crow. It’s the height of Black people being told that their dreams didn’t matter. So for her to have that big vision for her son, and to believe it full-heartedly, is so miraculous.”

“I showed up every day and had five to seven pages to do opposite actors like this,” said Damon, who also served as a producer on “Air.” “It was ridiculous. From the moment we read Alex’s script to the last cut we made, it was just absolute joy. This has been the best experience of my life. When you go to work with Viola Davis on a five-day scene, and at 10:30, you’re done, and it’s the best thing you’ve done in your career, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess we should keep working. What else can we do today?’”
“What Ben and Matt were able to do with this story, which is an American business story — they made a rock show out of that,” added Jason Bateman, who played Nike marketing exec Rob Strasser. “And it was somehow able to be enhanced by what Michael Jordan means to all of us. I’ll never think of Michael Jordan the same way again.”
There was one more A-list guest in attendance on Saturday, but she wasn’t part of the film: Jennifer Lopez, who swooped in silently to support her husband.
At the start of the premiere, Affleck stood alongside his cast onstage to introduce the film. Then, as the lights dimmed, Lopez joined him inside the theater. But the crowd barely got a look at her — a standing ovation began as soon as the film ended, and Lopez swiftly exited before the lights turned back on.

In IRON MAN/HELLCAT ANNUAL (2022) #1, Patsy returned to San Francisco to see the McConnell Manor, a house that belonged to her mother’s family. Everything seemed alright, until Hedy was abducted by blood demons. No wonder Dorothy Walker kept the house off the books! Patsy was transported to Hell and learned that Blackheart, son of Mephisto, was the culprit behind the plot. He possessed the souls of the McConnells, and they could be freed if Patsy gave her soul to him. (Wouldn’t be the first time a demon wanted Patsy’s soul!) Obviously, Patsy didn’t do that and instead freed her family by ripping their souls out of his chest. But that was not where the story ended…
Daimon Hellstrom, through Patsy’s stuffed animal Buttons the Rabbit, told her that Mephisto and Blackheart were aiming to conquer the Netherworld. Seeing Daimon as a threat, they exiled him, causing him to lose most of his powers and physical form. Hence, him being trapped inside an inanimate bunny to communicate. But the minute he began talking about the two teaming up again, Patsy punted him.
During her most recent time in Hell, Patsy felt imbued with “hellish, awful power.” Blackheart previously proclaimed that there, not above ground, was her true home. BACK TO THE GOLDEN STATE: THE PAST
Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Shazam! Fury of the Gods.Shazam! Fury of the Gods has arrived in theaters. The sequel to the 2019 film has been a long time coming and has been delayed multiple times, with release dates moving back and forth between 2022 and 2023. The movie has finally arrived and has delivered another fun DC film before the entire franchise gets a major reset with the upcoming The Flash, paving the way for the DCU.
The fact that the movie was made during the old regime of Warner Bros. before the purchase by Discovery, and before James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed the heads of DC Studios, has put the film’s status in an interesting place. It is unclear how Shazam as a character and movie series will play into the future, or if it will even matter at all.
Yet the film did still feature two after-credit sequences that hint at what the original plan might have been for Shazam! and the future of the franchise; now, though, that franchise could go nowhere or play out differently.
The film’s mid-credit sequences feature Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee) being sent by Amanda Waller in order to meet with Shazam to recruit him. While Billy is expecting to be asked to join the Justice League, they are there to recruit him into the Justice Society. Billy points out it is confusing to have two teams with the name Justice in the title. The scene also establishes that Amanda Waller knows Billy Batson’s identity.
While a fun comedic moment, this scene is somewhat important, but its status is now unclear. Emila Harcourt and John Economos were characters introduced in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and were also featured in Peacemaker. This suggests that Shazam and his supporting characters may have a part to play in James Gunn’s new DCU plans.
Harcourt also appeared in Black Adam, and the fact that Shazam is being recruited to the Justice Society specifically feels like setting up a showdown between Shazam and his arch-enemy Black Adam. Given Dwayne Johnson is no longer Black Adam and the DCEU is about to be reset as the DCU, the sequence’s potential to set anything up in the future is questionable. Yet the fact that it was not cut before the release of the movie and that it features two characters from James Gunn’s created project could be a good sign.
The first Shazam! had a mid-credit scene that featured classic Shazam villain Mister Mind talking to Doctor Sivana. It was assumed that Mister Mind would be the villain of the sequel, yet the movie instead went with the Daughters of Atlas.
In the after-credit scene of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the audience picks up with that plotline, as Doctor Sivana has been in prison for two years and Mister Mind has returned. Mister Mind informs Doctor Sivana that everything is almost in place. Sivana is angry it is taking so long, but Mister Mind points out that it’s taking a while since he has to crawl everywhere, before crawling away to finish his plan.
With Dwayne Johnson reportedly disinterested in joining the Shazam franchise even before James Gunn took over the DCU, it appeared the filmmakers had decided to save Mister Mind as the major villain for the third film in a Shazam trilogy. Mister Mind’s most popular storyline involves the Monster Society of Evil which would likely see him, Doctor Sivana, and a team of villains going up against the Shazam family. With the status of a third Shazam! movie up in the air, this is one storyline that might get canceled.
Shazam! ended with Billy Batson saying he invited a friend to join him and Freddy for lunch, with the reveal being Superman, but not showing Henry Cavill’s face. A fun joke, but the sequel never quite establishes how exactly Shazam knew Superman and if there is any contact. The mid-credit scene for the movie even establishes that he is not a part of the Justice League, as he is excited at the prospect to join, only to be disappointed by it being the Justice Society.
In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, another Justice League member makes their presence known. Towards the end of the movie, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) shows up to restore life to the world of the gods, as she is the only one connected to the old gods left. The movie has a running bit with Billy Batson having a crush on Wonder Woman, and he is awestruck when he finally meets her. She tells him to keep saving the world, so it is clear by the end of the movie that the Justice League knows who Shazam is.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods reveals that when Billy Batson broke the wizard’s staff in the first Shazam! it also destroyed the protection spell the Wizard had put up over Earth to prevent magical creatures and god-like figures from entering the world. This allows the Daughters of Atlas to attack Earth after so long, and also might be an explanation for a whole new host of magical threats entering the DCU. There have been magical forces before the events of Shazam!, like Enchantress in Suicide Squad and Ares in Wonder Woman, but this now opens the door for the more magical side of the DC Universe to take center stage.
James Gunn has labeled Chapter One of his DCU plan ‘Gods and Monsters,’ and while it is unclear how much Shazam! Fury of the Gods will connect to this new plan, this could be a hint at what is to come. Supernatural titles like Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos are already confirmed, and James Gunn did say the whole slate could not be revealed as it would spoil developments in other projects. Wonder Woman villains like Circe or even supernatural heroes like Justice League Dark now could be on the table.
Many have now wondered what is even the point of seeing Shazam! Fury of the Gods if the wider DC franchise is being retooled. Why bother watching the movie if the setups don’t go anywhere? While the after-credit sequences are fun little additions to speculate about for the future, they should not be the only value a new entry in a superhero franchise has.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods tells an engaging story that builds off the foundation of the original film. It plays very much like a classic superhero sequel before the mid-credit sequences were an automatic assumption. After all, Spider-Man 2 is still an enjoyable movie even if Spider-Man 3 never happened.
Joker was a hit with audiences as a stand-alone film, and it was not until afterward that a sequel was even thought possible. Joker not setting up future films did not make the movie pointless. It is unclear what the future holds, and both director David F. Sandberg and star Zachary Levi have hinted Shazam’s future is tied in with how well the movie does.
Regardless of if the mid-credit scenes end up being paid off, movies are not ads. Shazam! Fury of the Gods could play a big role in the future of the franchise, or it might not mean anything. Yet the only way it is forgotten is if audiences only treat it as the setup for the next film and forget to enjoy the movie at the moment.

A few months ago, entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider tweeted a rumor that Disney was allowing James Cameron to finish special effects on a nine-hour cut of the third Avatar film. At the time this made no sense. Why would Disney pay for expensive effects on a movie that would not be released that long?
There were several theories about having enough room to cut scenes in and out, and maybe save some stuff for the fourth installment.
But now, Jeff Sneider is back with a rumor follow-up.
RUMOR: Remember that 9-hour cut of AVATAR 3 that I told you James Cameron was insisting on having finished VFX for? I hear it could hit Disney+ as a limited series AFTER the theatrical cut of the film… https://t.co/pJGBZ4Q0Yf
— Jeff Sneider (@TheInSneider) March 16, 2023
Sneider joined John Rocha on their podcast, The Hot Mic, to discuss the possibility that Avatar 3 would have a normal release at a normal (three hours, probably) length, and after it left theaters Disney+ would add the nine-hour cut to their platform and release it as a limited series.
Does this make sense?
I’m not sure. I don’t know what Disney+ gains in what would surely be a very expensive nine-hour version of the movie. You’re talking hundreds of millions extra.
But then again, maybe it would draw in more subscribers who want to see more of the biggest movies in the world.
Hard to say, and with no prevailing proof, but we will keep you updated.

It’s like we always say: Nothing good happens when you release a superhero movie with an exclamation point in the title where a colon should rightly be. Hence news reports this weekend that Shazam! Fury Of The Gods—genuinely irritating to type out, for what it’s worth—is opening even worse than its initial projections, which also, to put it in highly technical industry terms, sucked.
This is per Deadline, which put in a fair amount of analysis this weekend into figure out why David F. Sandberg’s sequel is set to open at just $30 million, down from the $53.5 million the original Shazam! got back in 2019. (And even coming in below the $35 million projections the sequel was facing just a few weeks back.) After all, Warner Bros. and New Line did plenty right, marketing the film relentlessly, and keeping it out of the jaws of Avatar: The Way Of Water. (It is projected to be the biggest movie of the weekend, beating Scream VI). The most compelling argument Deadline ends up floating is also the simplest: Nobody wants another goddamn Shazam! movie.
Which is less an indictment of the first movie—which is perfectly fun, relying on Zachary Levi’s antibiotic-resistant charms—than on the fact that this latest movie is orphaned even by the standards of the parent-light DC Film Universe. While it features a few cameos from the James Gunn wing of the cinematic universe—and a surprise appearance that could well be the last by one of the members of the Zack Snyder-era Justice League—it’s unclear where the movie sits as any kind of wider plan. Which would be fine—the original Shazam! was generally better for its loose links to its movie brethren—except that there’s been so much drama kicked up about the fate of this universe, and the ways Tom Cruise favorite The Flash will reshuffle it, that it’s apparently been hard for audiences to work up any enthusiasm for the canon-adjacent adventures of Billy Batson and his family.

“Beef” stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as two people involved in a road rage incident that spirals out of control and begins to consume their every waking moment. And despite that Yeun and Wong have no actual beef with each other, that anger began to consume them outside of the show, too — except in real life, it came in the form of hives.
During a Q&A following the world premiere of “Beef” at South by Southwest, the actors were asked how they managed to decompress after performing such explosive anger on set.
“Our bodies shut down,” Yeun said.
“Steven and I both broke out in hives after the show. Mine was on my face. His was all over his body because he’s weak like that,” Wong said, to wide audience laughter. “It definitely took a toll on us, but we didn’t even realize until after the show ended. I mean, I won’t even talk about what happened to your elbow.”
She continued: “I don’t think we knew that was going to happen. If we knew what we were going to put our bodies and minds through, maybe we wouldn’t have said yes, but we’re really glad we did.”
Series creator Lee Sung Jin knows a thing or two about that kind of anger. Onstage, he revealed that “Beef” was inspired by a bout of road rage that he actually experienced himself.
“It was with a white SUV. A BMW, not a Mercedes,” he said, as Wong’s character drives a white Mercedes in the show. “It honked at me, cursed at me and drove away. And for some reason, on that day, I was like, ‘I’m gonna follow you.’ It didn’t end like it did in the show — that’s why I’m here, able to talk to you today — but it definitely made me think about how we live in such subjective realities where we project onto people we don’t know.”
“Beef” is not the first collaboration between Jin, Wong and Yeun. Jin was a writer on “Tuca and Bertie,” in which Wong and Yeun voiced lead characters. Jin said that Yeun was one of the first people to hear the idea for “Beef”: “We talked for like three hours. Conversations with Steven usually start like, ‘Hey, I want to talk to you about this show,’ and then three hours later, we’re like, ‘Why is God the way he is?’”
“What attracted me is that we got to play with something that we’re not asked to on the surface, which is our shadow selves,” Yeun said. “This whole show is every character’s shadow self, and we all have that. So to tap into that — and to get paid for it — is great. And hopefully to make you feel seen, too, because this shit’s very common.”
His prior connections with Jin and Wong made the role easier for Yeun. “It keeps you feeling safe, and it helps you to be more honest. You’re not left on your own vulnerability,” he said. “When you get to express this all in that safety of friendship on set, you go home like, ‘I don’t really explore that anywhere else.’ So it wasn’t too bad. It’s just holding up the tension that was really gnarly.”

I meet so many debut filmmakers who all ask the same question: How does a filmmaker make money in movies? It’s the same question I have been asking since I started Raindance in 1992! Wow, was I naive.
A good Parisian-based friend, the producer Zachary Miller begged me to go to the Cannes Film Festival that first year of Raindance. I remember walking down the Croisette and into the Marche du Film for the first time. I thought I was in the middle of the London Stock Exchange. Banners, posters, movie screens everywhere. And throngs of people pitching their guts out. And clumps of people huddled in sales agents’ booths crowded around monitors. Racks and racks of movie one-sheets everywhere. Everyone was either selling something. Or negotiating a purchase.
Then it hit me, like a cool breeze from the east.
Filmmakers make products. You make money in filmmaking by selling your product. And to sell your movie you go to a film market like Cannes (Marche du Film), Berlin (European Film Market), LA (American Film Market) and the TV markets like MIPCOM, Natpe, MipTV and Filmart
Technological advances have changed the way movies are made, sold and distributed. But my good friend Dov S-S Simens will tell you there are three fundamental tactics for making money in filmmaking:
Dov will be the first person to say that that it’s not as easy as that.
Making money in filmmaking is more than simply making a movie. For sure, making a movie is the first step. But selling it means a whole lot more.
Here is the reality of film production today: The proliferation of technological advances has made it easier and cheaper to make a movie than ever before. And the marketplace is flooded with independent films from all over the world. This makes it hard to find your movie.
How do you get noticed? You need to make a movie that is remarkable. And use the tools of publicity to let your movie shine brighter than the rest.
Over my decades at Raindance I have seen many filmmakers develop successful movie businesses. How do they do it?
Assuming they have a great film, successful filmmakers know how to focus on the business aspects. They know how to combine their creative elements with the harsh commercial realities of film budget, the impact of cast and genre. They also become expert at developing relationships and connections in every area of the movie business.
To sum up, filmmakers make money by developing and testing a strategy. And most filmmakers fail to plan the commercial side of their film at all. They literally swan around saying ‘I just want to get my film on Netflix and the BBC” and “I don’t want to make money from my film, I just want people to see it”.
Grrr.
Every distribution platform, every distributor, every sales agent, every financier wants to make money.
Until you care about how to make money in filmmaking you won’;t make any money. and your career will suffer. And you will likely abandon your dream.
The film industry is opaque. It’s hard to see how films, or products, are launched onto the marketplace, and even more difficult to see how or why they succeed (or fail).
Add to this the fact that the industry is known for secrecy.
From your investors’ point of view, many other industries offer a far safer ROI than the movie industry. Thus, your main priority is to de-risk your film for your investors.
Here are the three basic tips for making money in movies:
Successful filmmakers who strike gold with their movies follow these three steps.

TORONTO – Fred VanVleet scored 28 to power the Raptors past the Minnesota Timberwolves 122-107 on Saturday for Toronto’s third-straight win.
Pascal Siakam and Jakob Poeltl each had a double-double for the Raptors (35-36), who wore their black and gold OVO jerseys to match the Scotiabank Arena court.
Siakam scored 27, pulled down 10 rebounds and added six assists. Poeltl had 14 points, 12 in the first quarter alone, and 11 boards.
Naz Reid scored 22 off the bench for Minnesota (35-37), which lost its third game in a row. Jaden McDaniels added 18.
Timberwolves guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who is from Toronto, scored four.
VanVleet got off to a hot start, scoring 15 in the first quarter, including drilling a three-pointer with 4:58 left in the frame to put Toronto up by four. He and Poeltl were a potent perimeter-paint threat, combining for 27 points to help the Raptors to a 32-26 lead in the first frame.

Poeltl scored a season-high 12 points in the quarter. His previous high for a single quarter was 10 on March 2 against the Washington Wizards.
OG Anunoby got off a buzzer-beating three-pointer to bring the sold-out crowd of 19,800 to their feet and give the Raptors a 66-58 lead at the intermission.
Kyle Anderson’s jumper early in the third quarter pulled Minnesota to within two. After exchanging several field goals, McDaniels drilled a three-pointer to bring the visitors to within one.
A driving Reid layup with 4:16 left in the third gave the Timberwolves a lead — albeit by just a point — for the first time since 6:13 into the game.
The lead swung back and forth between Toronto and Minnesota for the rest of the third quarter.
Montreal’s Chris Boucher blocked Reid’s shot with 36 seconds left in the quarter then, at the other end of the court, he converted a pass from Siakam into a three-pointer. On the ensuing Timberwolves’ possession, Gary Trent Jr. stole the ball from Jordan McLaughlin and broke away on his own for an uncontested layup and a 94-85 Raptors lead heading into the fourth.
Scottie Barnes made a layup two minutes into the fourth, forcing Minnesota to take a timeout with the Raptors holding a 13-point lead.
Toronto didn’t look back after that, continuing to press every time Minnesota scored. A two-handed Poeltl jam, his first points since the opening quarter, followed by a Trent three-pointer gave the Raptors a 19-point lead and sent dozens of fans to the exits.
It also prompted Toronto head coach Nick Nurse to put out some of his depth players, including Joe Wieskamp who had already played earlier in the day for Raptors 905, Toronto’s G League affiliate.
MASKED MAN — Raptors rookie centre Christian Koloko fractured his nose late in Thursday’s 128-111 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Koloko was listed as questionable before Saturday’s game but played nine minutes with a protective mask on.
“We just totally put all those questionable guys as ‘in,’” said Nurse before the game.
UP NEXT — The Raptors travel to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks on Sunday night.
Minnesota continues its road trip with a game in New York against the Knicks on Monday.

4x Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe has expressed his willingness to return to the Spider-Man multiverse again, should the right opportunity arise.
The actor known for his iconic villain role as Norman Osborne aka Green Goblin, in Sam Raimi’s 2000s Spider-Man trilogy and beyond, said as much in a recent interview with Inverse, telling the outlet he’d gladly reprise the part “if everything was right.
“I mean, that’s a great role,” opined Dafoe. “I liked the fact that it’s a double role both times. Twenty years ago, and fairly recently, both times [were] very different experiences, but I had a good time on both.”
Dafoe’s Spidey character Osborne is a scientist holding the post of CEO at Oscorp who goes mad in Raimi’s 2002 trilogy opener Spider-Man, coming after the web-slinging superhero of the same name played by Tobey Maguire, after an experiment with strength enhancement goes awry, despite the fact that Spidey is, in his day-to-day life, Peter Parker, the best friend of his own son, Harry (James Franco). While the character meets his end in that film after a failed attempt at killing Parker, Dafoe reprised the part with small appearances in the Raimi-directed sequels, Spider-Man 2 and 3.
The actor most recently returned to the Spider-verse for the 2021 multiverse pic Spider-Man: No Way Home, which had him reuniting on screen with Maguire’s version of the character, while striking fear into the version played by Tom Holland in the more recent film series.
And Dafoe certainly isn’t the only legacy star of the franchise to have expressed excitement about further installments. Maguire himself said in an interview for the book Spider-Man No Way Home: The Official Movie Special, released last month, that when he got the call to come back for No Way Home, he was “like finally!
“I got the call and was immediately open about coming to do this. Not without nerves – you know, “What will this look like and what will the experience be?” But to get to show up with beautiful, talented, creative people and play together? It’s just like, “Yes!” It’s fun and exciting,” said Spidey 1.0.
“I love these films and I love all of the different series,” Maguire went on to say. “If these guys called me and said, “Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?” or “Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?”, it would be a “yes!” Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”
Dafoe’s Inverse interview came in support of his new thriller Inside released by Focus Features on Friday, on the heels of a Berlin world premiere. The first feature from Vasilis Katsoupis has him starring as Nemo, a high-end art thief, who finds himself trapped in a New York penthouse after his heist doesn’t go as planned. Locked inside with nothing but priceless works of art, he must use all his cunning and invention to survive. Other buzzy upcoming projects for the actor include Wes Anderson’s potentially Cannes-premiering Asteroid City, Focus’ Nosferatu from his The Lighthouse collaborator Robert Eggers, and the Yorgos Lanthimos films Poor Things and AND, to name a few.
While it’s not yet clear what Sony has in mind for its next live-action Spider-Man film, the studio will release Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — its follow-up to the beloved, Oscar-nominated animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — on June 2nd.

But as cool as that is, it doesn’t mean AI is suddenly as smart as a lawyer.
The arrival of GPT-4, an upgrade from OpenAI to the chatbot software that captured the world’s imagination, is one the year’s most-hyped tech launches. Some feared its uncanny ability to imitate humans could be devastating for workers, be used as a chaotic “deepfake” machine or usher in an age of sentient computers.
That is not how I see GPT-4 after using it for a few days. While it has gone from a D student to a B student at answering logic questions, AI hasn’t crossed a threshold into human intelligence. For one, when I asked GPT-4 to flex its improved “creative” writing capability by crafting the opening paragraph to this column in the style of me (Geoffrey A. Fowler), it couldn’t land on one that didn’t make me cringe.
But GPT-4 does add to the challenge of unraveling how AI’s new strengths — and weaknesses — might change work, education and even human relationships. I’m less concerned that AI is getting too smart than I am with the ways AI can be dumb or biased in ways we don’t know how to explain and control, even as we rush to integrate it into our lives.
These aren’t just theoretical questions: OpenAI is so confident in GPT-4, it introduced it alongside commercial products that are already using it, to teach language in Duolingo and tutor kids in Khan Academy.
Anyone can use GPT-4, but for now it requires a $20 monthly subscription to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus. It turns out millions of people have already been using a version of GPT-4: Microsoft acknowledged this week it powers the Bing chatbot that the software giant added to its search engine in February. The companies just didn’t reveal that until now.
So what’s new? OpenAI claims that by optimizing its “deep learning,” GPT-4’s biggest leaps have been in logical reasoning and creative collaboration. GPT-4 was trained on data from the internet that goes up through September 2021, which means it’s a little more current than its predecessor GPT-3.5. And while GPT-4 still has a problem with randomly making up information, OpenAI says it is 40 percent more likely to provide factual responses.
GPT-4 also gained an eyebrow-raising ability to interpret the content of images — but OpenAI is locking that down while it undergoes a safety review.
What do these developments look like in use? Early adopters are putting GPT-4 up to all sorts of colorful tests, from asking it how to make money to asking it to code a browser plug-in that makes websites speak Pirate. (What are you doing with it? Email me.)
Let me share two of my tests that help show what this thing can — and can’t — do now.
We’ll start with the test that most impressed me: watching GPT-4 nearly ace the LSAT.
I tried 10 sample logical reasoning questions written by the Law School Admission Council on both the old and new ChatGPT. These aren’t factual or rote memorization questions — these are a kind of multiple-choice brain teasers that tell you a whole bunch of different facts and then asks you to sort them out.
When I ran them through GPT-3.5, it got only 6 out of 10 correct.
What’s going on? In puzzles that GPT-4 alone got right, its responses show it stays focused on the link between the presented facts and the conclusion it needs to support. GPT-3.5 gets distracted by facts that aren’t relevant.
OpenAI says a number of studies show GPT-4 “exhibits human-level performance” on other professional and academic benchmarks. GPT-4 got in the 90th percentile in the Uniform Bar Exam — up from 10th percentile in the previous version. It got 93rd on the SAT reading and writing test, and even 88th percentile on the full LSAT.
We’re still untangling what this means. But a test like the LSAT is made with clearly organized information, the kind of thing machines excel at. Some researchers argue these sorts of tests aren’t useful to assess improvements in reasoning for a machine.
But it does appear GPT-4 has made an improvement in its ability to follow complex instructions that involve lots of variables, something that can be difficult or time consuming for human brains.
So what can we do with that? Since it did ace the LSAT, I called a legal software company called Casetext that has had access to GPT-4 for the past few months. It has decided it can now sell the AI to help lawyers, not replace them.
The AI’s logical reasoning “means it is ready for professional use in serious legal affairs” in a way previous generations were not, CEO Jake Heller said. Like what? He says his product called CoCounsel has been able to use GPT-4 to process large piles of legal documents and for potential sources of inconsistency.
Another example: GPT-4 can interrogate client guidelines — the rules of what they will and won’t pay for — to answer questions like whether they’ll cover the cost of a college intern. Even if the guidelines don’t use that exact word “intern,” CoCounsel’s AI can understand that an intern would also be covered in a prohibition on paying for “training.”
But what if the AI gets it wrong, or misses an important logical conclusion? The company says it has seen GPT-4 mess up, particularly when math is involved. But Heller said human legal professionals also make mistakes and he only sees GPT-4 as a way to augment lawyers. “You are not blindly delegating a task to it,” he said. “Your job is to be the final decision-maker.”
My concern: When human colleagues make mistakes, we know how to teach them not to do it again. Controlling an AI is at best a complicated new skill — and at worst, something we’ve seen AI chatbots like Microsoft’s Bing and Snapchat’s My AI struggle with in embarrassing and potentially dangerous ways.
To test GPT-4’s creative abilities, I tried something closer to home: replacing me, a columnist who has views on everything tech-related.
When ChatGPT first arrived, much of the public concern was rightly about its impact on the world of human activity that involves words, from storytelling to therapy. Students and professionals have found it capable of aiding or completing assignments.
But for many creative professionals, the AI writing just didn’t seem very good. Songwriter Nick Cave said an attempt to use ChatGPT to write in his style was a “grotesque mockery of what it is to be human.”
In GPT-4, OpenAI claims it has improved capabilities to better generate, edit and iterate on both creative and technical writing tasks. It’s got a new “temperature” setting you can adjust for the creativity of responses. It can also take instructions on style and tone because it can support prompts of up to 25,000 words. In theory, you should be able to share a whole bunch of your writing and say match it.
So that was my creative challenge for GPT-4: Write an introductory paragraph to this column that sounds like me — or something I wish had written.
To do it, I gathered a long sample of my recent columns to teach GPT-4 what I sound like. To get this to work, I used the commercial version of GPT-4 that OpenAI sells to corporations, because the public ChatGPT can’t yet accept as much text.
The prompt on top of my writing sample read:
Write a pithy opening paragraph to a Washington Post tech column about the arrival of a new version of ChatGPT, which runs on GPT-4. It should hook readers with the fact that the artificial intelligence tool has gained the remarkable ability to solve logic puzzles from the LSAT. It should match the writing style of Geoffrey A. Fowler based on the following samples of his columns in The Washington Post.
Across dozens of tests, the results offered by GPT-3.5 gave me hives, like this:
Welcome to the future, where man and machine are now embroiled in a battle of wits that would make even the likes of Sherlock Holmes quiver with trepidation. As the latest iteration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT — the prodigious offspring of the GPT-4 family — makes its grand entrance, it brings with it an astonishing new ability: solving logic puzzles ripped straight from the pages of the LSAT. Yes, you read that right, dear reader: the very exam that has left countless aspiring lawyers grappling with their own cerebral limits now faces a worthy opponent in the form of an AI that puts the ‘A’ in aptitude.
My results from GPT-4, with access to 6,000 words of my columns to emulate my style, were better. But not much. For example, this is what it produced with the “temperature” setting in the middle:
Prepare to be awestruck by the next evolution in artificial intelligence: ChatGPT, the prodigious brainchild of OpenAI, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Harnessing the power of GPT-4, the latest iteration of ChatGPT can now tackle logic puzzles straight from the LSAT — a feat even more astounding than debating Elon Musk or concocting a delectable recipe for beef stroganoff. Tech aficionados and baffled bystanders, brace yourselves; the world is about to change.
I certainly hope that doesn’t sound like me. (I don’t even like beef stroganoff.) Across our more than 30 tries, it generated phrases including: “Hold on to your hats, logic lovers” and “Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seat belts as we embark on a roller-coaster ride with GPT-4, where logic leaps and acrobatics abound.”
My access to GPT-4 maxed out at a 6,000-word prompt, so I asked OpenAI directly to help run the same prompt but with 25,000 words of my writing to copy my style. The result — with “temperature” set to 0.2 out of 2 — sounds more sane, but still not worthy of the top of this column:
ChatGPT has always been good at mimicking human conversation. But with the arrival of GPT-4, the artificial intelligence tool has taken a big leap forward: It can now solve logic puzzles from the LSAT. That’s right, the test used to get into law school. As AI continues to evolve at a breakneck pace, it’s worth asking: What else will these systems be able to do?
Perhaps most unnerving was how GPT-4 leaped to conclusions and facts that were not part of my prompt. Across our different trials, it wrote “Step aside, humans” (yikes!) and that GPT-4 is “adaptable, intuitive, and more humanlike than ever before.”
The experience made me wonder: What is the problem we’re trying to solve with building out the creative capabilities of AI? I appreciate that AI writing tools can help people who aren’t professional writers get started on business documents, research reports and even personal correspondence.
But developing the ability to control and even emulate style takes it in the realm of trying to ape artists. Clearly, I don’t fear losing my job as a writer to GPT-4. Ask me again on GPT-5.

Key Quote: Washington: “In doing the show, we were learning more about the reality of the situation in our country. There are 80 million Americans living with a criminal record, especially in communities of color and poor communities. So here we are acting like this is a community that is small, secretive, that doesn’t need to be talked about—but this is all of us. If we haven’t been part of the system itself, whether the prison system or foster care—these systems that are breaking us down and breaking us apart—then we love someone whose been part of these systems. Vanderpump Rules star Charli Burnett is regretting being on team Raquel Leviss’ before Scandoval went down!
For those who haven’t seen this week’s episode of the Bravo series, viewers saw Lala Kent, Katie Maloney, and Kristina Kelly say Raquel cannot be trusted around someone’s man – especially after making a move on Tom Schwartz and making out with Garcelle Beauvais’ married son Oliver Saunders. Katie even noted on the episode:
“I am starting to see a pattern in Raquel. It seems like she is only interested in men that her friends are either married to or interested in. That’s a big red flag for me.”
While out to dinner, Charli clapped back at Lala’s remarks that the 28-year-old’s behavior was offensive to all women, saying:
“I don’t know who made Lala the spokeswoman of women, but we need to find a new president or manager. She is the last person I would want to speak for me. Talk about how you went from a mansion back to an apartment.”

As the girls continued to go back and forth during the heated exchange, Charli defended he SUR waitress’ actions, as Raquel noted that Lala slept with her ex James Kennedy while they were still together and was Randall Emmett’s “mistress.” As you can expect, the Give Them Lala host wasn’t too happy about those comments!
It was a messy girl’s trip, to say the least. And given that Raquel was later caught having a months-long affair with their co-star Tom Sandoval while he was still in a relationship with Ariana Madix earlier this month, these scenes did not age well for Charli! Many Bravo fans were even quick to call out the 26-year-old for defending the former pageant queen.
But now knowing about the whole Scandoval, Charli walked back on her defense of Raquel and said she felt “incredibly silly” over it. She tweeted this week:
“Oh wow would these convos go differently now. I hate when people aren’t honest. Tbh I feel incredibly silly on some things obvi knowing what I know now. I can take the accountability on my end always. But what I won’t apologize for is always being a good & honest girls girl. Even if I look dumb for believing someone.”
Charli added:
“I pride myself always on being a good friend. Especially to the women around me. I am only responsible for my words & actions if they ever hurt anyone.. xx .”
We mean, Charli did not know Raquel was messing around with Sandoval behind Ariana’s back at this point! Fans cannot fault her too much for helping out a friend in the moment! Reactions, Perezcious readers? Let us know in the comments below.

We have taught Leo to understand if an article is about pharma drugs or recreational ones to improve the relevance of his prioritization.
Let me show you how it works.
Let’s imagine that you have a Science Journals feed and want to track updates about drugs treating cancer. Let’s train Leo to read this feed and cut through the noise for you.

You can see a preview of all the articles that Leo has recognized as related to pharmaceutical drugs and cancer. These articles will be prioritized in your feed.
Now, you can do the same with recreational drugs. Let’s say you want to prioritize articles that are at the intersection of recreational drugs and epilepsy.

Leo will continuously learn and get smarter as he prioritizes articles about pharma drugs or recreational drugs, letting you focus on the topics and trends that matter to you.
After two months of Leo utilization, I can say that he saved us two of the three hours that we needed weekly to do our job, with the same or better quality. Really performant. Good job and long life to Leo ?

We are excited to see many Feedly users declutter their feeds and dig deeper into the topics and trends that matter to them. Sign up today and discover what Leo can do for you!

Disco Elysium, one of the best releases of 2019 and , finally has a dedicated photo mode, but it’s not like the one . , the game’s new Collage Mode grants players full access to all the characters, environments and props found within the RPG. As you might imagine, you can use that power to pose your favorite NPCs in “a range of silly and sensible poses.” You’re then free to add filters and change the time of day to alter the mood of your capture.
But most interesting of all, Collage Mode gives you the freedom to write your own dialogue for Disco Elysium, and make it look like it came directly from the game. “Fabricate completely new dramas from unforgivable punch-ups to fruity yet forbidden kisses,” developer ZA/UM Studio suggests. “Corroborate your fan fiction with screenshots directly from the game.” Disco Elysium fan fiction will never be the same.
As , Collage Mode arrives amid an ongoing public dispute between ZA/UM and a handful of the studio’s former employees. The disagreement dates back to 2022 when three members of the Disco Elysium team – Robert Kurvitz, Helen Hindpere and Aleksander Rostov – said they were fired from their jobs following the studio’s takeover by a pair of Estonian businessmen in 2021. Kurvitz and Rostov went on to accuse ZA/UM’s new owners of . On Tuesday, ZA/UM published a press release announcing the legal proceedings Kurvitz and Rostov had brought against it had been resolved after a court dropped the case. The two later the announcement was “wrong and misleading in several respects,” and that they would continue pursuing other legal options against their former employer.

Triangle of Sadness: An American Marxist and a Russian Capitalist on a $250 m yacht As movies go, there are several advantages of being different. Zwigato, Review: Wobbligato
Too good to be true-life, Zwigato might have been inspired by true incidents. The narrative does try to convey that feel. At first, it sucks you in with its no blemish couple and their ideal family. But then the layers come off one by one. There are tropes galore, masquerading as plot points. Is the film narrating the story of a food delivery boy, with interesting twists and turns, or is it taking the delivery boy as a prototype and making him go through the motions that any other delivery boy would? In the process, we see a lot of Bhubaneshwar, the capital city of Odisha state, director Nandita Das being of Odiya blood. Aditya Birla Group’s Applause Entertainment, headed by Sameer Nair, which backed the film, has delivered a film with little or no applause. And whatever incentive the Odisha government gave to the project will have to be quickly written off.
A surreal beginning later, we learn that the protagonist of the film, Manas, a former factory floor manager, is now a delivery-boy for the food delivery US multinational, Zwigato. With number of deliveries, targets, ratings, incentives, punishments and other built in aspects of the job, and very low payments, he finds it difficult to make both ends meet. His family consists of his mother, his wife Pratima, a son and a daughter, both school-going. Though the pre-teens children are mischievous, Pratima is an angel, and looks after Manas’s mother extremely well, though she old-lady suffers from incontinence. Riding a motor-cycle, Manas has to shell out the petrol money, and petrol prices are sky-high, further eating into his savings.

Pratima wants to contribute to the family kitty desperately, and manages to get a job as a masseuse. Being on the thinner side, and sari-clad, she is greeted with suspicion by her first client, but she manages to pass muster. Word-of-mouth references get her more assignments, but they are not enough. She wants a permanent, high-paying job. Meanwhile Manas has hit a bad patch. After losing his temper at a snobbish, arrogant client, he gets an only-to-be-expected bad rating, so bad that he is blocked out of the App altogether. Also, he gets involved with a revolutionary movement, and keeps looking for Sugam, a one form access across all government jobs. Sadly, Sugam exists only in his imagination.
As co-writer, with Samir Patil (Mice, Leeches), Nandita Das has served us quite a concoction. Various tracks emerge as the film unfolds, but they do not lead anywhere. An open end is the least of these, and quite acceptable, unlike the mish-mash that precedes it. There is a surreal dream that is repeated later in the film, in a shorter version. Taken at face value, it has no meaning. And Nandita does not integrate it with the rest of the film. The attempt at making a political statement, through a leader and a meeting, is merely a base. Yes, loud music is used to drown the leader’s voice, and when they start singing on the microphone, and the power supply is cut-off. So what’s new? A plain-clothes official is trying to nab a Muslim, who is part of the revolutionary group. The track ends there. Anything new about that? Screenplay-wise, the story does not move forward from ‘delivery boys are an exploited lot.’
Director Nandita Das (Firaaq, Manto) did not, on this occasion, implement the credo that half the battle is won with meticulous casting, something she managed quite well in Manto. One does not hold his comedy shows on TV against him and Zwigato is not his first feature film. You might have seen Kapil Sharma (born Kapil Punj) in Bhavnao Ko Samjho (2010), Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015), and Firangi (2017). I have seen Kis Kisko, and Kapil fell short there. But he just does not convince as a delivery-boy, though not for want of trying. Shahana Goswami is a fine actress, yet there is no chemistry between Kapil and Shahana. Swanand Kirkire delivers long, revolutionary lines with élan. But it is a memorised, theatrical delivery. You do not blame him, for that is all he has to do. Except for one minor indiscretion on the part of Kapil, the couple are the stuff dreams are made of, though, sadly, uni-dimensional. The same can be said of the bit players. Moreover, the film lacks structure and effective mise en scène. The one shot of Kapil snuggling in his mother’s lap is among the few that stay with you after the film, as does the climax. The animation that follows as the end credit titles roll is cute, but offers no incentive to stay back.
What could have been a change of image for Kapil Sharma falls short in characterisation. He does, however, impress with his ability to emote. A completely deglamourised Shahana (Firaaq, Ra.one, Tu Hai Mera Sunday) Goswami is much more convincing as Pratima and carries out even the most embarrassing scenes with aplomb, even convincing in the masseuse track. Gul Panag’s cherubic countenance adds colour to the proceedings. Debtosh Darjee plays the Zwigato front office staff, and Debabrata Pattanayak is cast as the Zwigato receptionist, who have to deal with a host or irate Riders. Both are Okay. Sayani Gupta, as a Zwigato Regional Head, begins by exuding sympathy, only to deliver the final blow to Manas’ career. She does what was expected of her, and does it quite well. On a website, the cast includes ShahRukh Khan. How did I miss him? Others in the cast include Tushar Acharya, Zishan Ali, B M Baisali, Monalisa Bal, Bishan Balabhadra, Gargi Bhattacharya, Neelambari Bhattacharya, Chiranjib Biswal, Jaya Biswas, Yuvika Brahma, Arjun Das, Dilip Kumar Das, Manoj Das, Rayaansh Das and Jugal Debata.
Music (background score) by Sagar Desai is odd. There is nothing outstanding by Cinematographer Ranjan Palit, and film editors Nirmal Gala (DI Production Head), Ashirwad Hadkar (DI Colourist), but thanks to Jabeen Merchant for keeping the length to 105 minutes. And most of it fleets past faster than usual because the camera follows a scooter rider. But the ride is not entirely smooth. Taking a cue from music, Zwigato is not an obbligato, but rather a wobbligato.
Rating: **
Zwigato, Review: Wobbligato Too good to be
Earlier this week, reports broke that Willow—the streaming TV continuation of Ron Howard and George Lucas’ 1988 fantasy epic—had been canceled after a single season on the air at Disney+. Now, though, series showrunner Jon Kasdan has pushed back on those reports, asserting, basically, that in a world where Willow can get revived on technology that didn’t even exist when it first hit theaters, who can even say what “canceled” means anymore, anyway?
In a long letter posted on Twitter this week, Kasdan does concede the basic point that kicked off reports of Willow’s death: The release of the cast from their contracts, which typically signals that a show has no plans to move forward on production any time in the near future. Which is also the case with Willow: Acknowledging that “Due to forces much larger and more intricate than I would ever pretend to fully understand, production of streaming shows is slowing down across the entire industry,” Kasdan admitted that “Willow won’t resume filming in the next 12 months.”
But despite all that, Kasdan insists this is just a pause, and not a true cancellation, because what’s 12 months, anyway? “Three weeks ago,” he writes, “We got a third season of Party Down, 13 years after season two. Between season 2 and 3 of Atlanta? 4 years. Curb Your Enthusiasm seasons 8 and 9 had a hiatus of 6 years.” Which does ignore the much higher percentage of shows that go on “hiatus” and, uh, stay there, but Kasdan does suggest that he has at least some continuing support from Disney and Lucasfilm. (Who, to be fair, haven’t issued one of those “We were so happy to have worked with you” press releases that are typically the death knell for a TV show.) Kasdan also reportedly has a full bushel of scripts for Willow Volume II, which was promised (alongside Willow Volume III) in the opening moments of the streaming series.

Scoring a ticket to the Eras Tour may have felt like the eighth circle of hell, but it sounds like Taylor Swift’s opening night was pure heaven on earth.
On March 18, Swift kicked off the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona (a.k.a. Swift City), performing for a crowd of 80,000 for the first time since her last tour in 2008. Celebrating all 10 of her albums—including the latest LP, Midnights—Swift’s set included 44 songs, 16 backup dancers, and at least 13 outfit changes. According to People, the entire show lasted 3 hours and 13 minutes, which, of course, represents the artist’s favorite number.
The trick to the quick change is keeping everything else simple, as Keira Knightley would agree. Throughout the entire night, Swift kept her hair straight, her eyeliner winged, and her lips her signature shade of red. Here’s everything Taylor Swift wore and sang on the first night of the Eras Tour. Warning: setlist spoilers past this point.
Getty Images
According to Elle, Swift began with Lover, taking audiences through “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince,” “Cruel Summer,” “The Man,” “You Need to Calm Down,” “Lover,” and “The Archer.” To represent the album, People reports that Swift wore a sparkling Versace bodysuit before switching into a boardroom-approved sparkling suit jacket perfect for “The Man.” Personally, I’m particularly drawn to her sparkling Christian Louboutin boots, which appeared multiple times throughout the night.

SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW! Mystery movies and true crime podcasts have been all the rage in recent years. As such, I expected writer/director Sophie Kargman’s Susie Searches, co-written by William Day Frank, to be in the same kind of mold as Missing. Instead, I was shocked to learn that through twists and turns, this is more of a character examination of the effects that social media and fame can have.
The story centers on Susie (played exceptionally by Kiersey Clemons), an awkward college student. In order to bolster her social media status and true crime podcast listeners, she takes the opportunity to solve the disappearance of her missing classmate Jesse (Alex Wolff, who also does a fine job). Susie is able to solve the mystery and save Jesse from his captivity in a basement.
This makes the braces-wearing Susie and Jesse instant media sensations. All of the adoring social media commentaries and exploding podcast numbers give Susie an endorphin rush. School president Andrews (Geoffrey Owens) is also quite thrilled at the prospect of boosting the school’s status and is ecstatic about booking the kids on a national morning news program.
Susie Searches features an excellent supporting cast, starting with comedian Jim Gaffigan as bumbling Sheriff Loggins. Meanwhile, Deputy Graham has a pension for busting Susie’s chops and is played by David Walton. Rachel Sennott is Jillian, who works with Susie at a fast food joint and hates their strict boss. Ken Marino fills the role of said manager, whose named Edgar.
“Susie is able to solve the mystery and save Jesse…”
There’s no doubt that social media has changed our culture. It was designed to be as addictive as gambling, and it worked. Most of us are on our phones constantly, checking to see our likes and what others are up to. It’s interesting to see where it ultimately takes the characters in the film.
I enjoy a good twist as much as anyone, and I appreciate originality in filmmaking. That being said, sometimes it doesn’t always serve the story. I won’t give anything away, but I will say that the twist here didn’t feel satisfying in the way that a traditional story may have. On top of that, the clues gave away the twist too soon for my taste.
Due to that, Susie Searches becomes more of a comedic thriller than a mystery. Throughout, other characters try to solve what has already been revealed to the audience. Sheriff Loggins is completely cold on the trail, so he enlists Susie’s help while the media makes fun of him for being unable to solve it on his own.
Despite my gripes, Susie Searches is still an interesting movie that is built on the brilliant performance of Clemons. She displays range and the kind of charisma that is required to be a leading lady. Likewise, Wolff is affable as the grateful-to-be-alive teen who is adjusting to his newfound fame. The lack of a mystery made me feel like I went out for ramen noodles but instead ended up with a burger, which was still satisfying, just different than I anticipated.
Susie Searches screened at the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 REVIEW!
Former President Donald Trump says his indictment by the Manhattan District Attorney for alleged hush money payments is imminent, claiming on Saturday that it could come as early as Tuesday.
District Attorney Alvin Bragg has not commented on Trump’s claims, and a spokesperson for Trump later clarified that Trump had received no notification an indictment was imminent.
However, Trump’s comments highlight the possibility that he could face arrest for the first time. Trump was invited to testify before a grand jury in early March. The offer to testify, which Trump declined, is required before any indictment.
The investigation centers around cash paid to pornographic film star Stormy Daniels in 2016 before Trump’s election win. Daniels says she had an affair with Trump; Trump denies this.
As part of Bragg’s investigation, Trump could face charges for falsifying business records when he allegedly reimbursed his then-personal attorney Michael Cohen for paying off Daniels. The hush-money deal, allegedly crafted weeks before his presidential win, could also put Trump in jeopardy of violating campaign finance laws.
The prospect of Trump’s arrest—the first in history for a former president—raises questions about the process Trump would be subject to during his arrest and trial—including whether any extraordinary measures would be taken given his unique status.
TIME spoke with legal experts about each step of the process, and how Trump’s indictment might proceed differently from run-of-the-mill white-collar crime cases.
The charges Trump would likely face are for white-collar crimes regarding financial dealings, and given their non-violent nature, defendants in such cases typically “self-surrender,” skipping public perp walks.
Shanlon Wu, a white-collar defense attorney and former federal prosecutor, tells TIME that defense councils typically receive notice when their white-collar clients are being indicted. “You would make an appointment basically, to bring your client in to be booked and fingerprinted,” Wu says.
Wu adds that Trump’s lawyers may even seek some special arrangements, given he’s a former president, to avoid walking through the front entrance of the courthouse or police station in an attempt to be more discreet. On Friday, Trump’s attorney said that if indicted, Trump would not resist arrest and that they would follow normal procedures. “There won’t be a standoff at Mar-a-Lago with Secret Service and the Manhattan DA’s office,” Joe Tacopina told the New York Daily News.
If indicted, Trump would have to go through the same process, where he would be booked into jail, finger-printed, and a “mug shot” taken. However, given Trump’s substantial ties to the community, especially his ongoing 2024 presidential campaign, the judge likely wouldn’t deem him a flight risk and would probably immediately release him on bond, former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti tells TIME.
In a post on Truth Social on Saturday morning, Trump claimed his arrest was imminent and called for his supporters to protest, citing “illegal leaks” from a “corrupt” and “highly political Manhattan district attorney’s office.”
Law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal level have been working to prepare the Manhattan Criminal Court for the possibility that Trump is indicted, NBC News reported Friday, citing anonymous sources. The New York Police Department, New York State Court Officers, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the Secret Service, and the FBI are all involved, according to NBC.
Wu doesn’t anticipate many unusual logistics in the procedures if Trump is indicted, but believes that security would be heightened—similar to measures for other high-profile political figures or celebrities. “Sometimes we see a huge flood of cameras and reporters at the front of the courthouse,” he says. “With a former president, the Secret Service would probably have some screening mechanism for that, because otherwise, you don’t know who’s in the crowd.”
“Court security may also set up a sort of a barrier zone, meaning there’s going to be ‘X’ amount of feet, where people can walk through and there won’t be any reporters sticking microphones in their faces,” Wu adds that there would probably be limits to how many people are allowed in the courtroom.
If Trump is indicted and charged, the case would eventually move on to jury selection, which could be a lengthy and exhausting process.
“The majority of people in the jury pool would have some opinions about Donald Trump,” former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti tells TIME. “Most defendants, even if they’re famous, are often not known by prospective jurors or they don’t have a certain opinion about that person. I think it’s safe to say that Donald Trump is different.”
During jury selection the prosecution and the defense use voir dire questioning, meaning they can ask each prospective juror questions about their qualifications and knowledge of the case, in an attempt to ensure fair and impartial jurors.
Wu thinks a judge could opt to issue a so-called “gag order,” restricting all parties from talking to the press. “This is gonna get so much publicity anyway if he’s charged,” Wu says. “It’d be very hard to find jurors who haven’t been exposed to the news.” Although rarely used, one method to combat this is for a judge to sequester jurors, limiting their exposure to outside influence or information.
“If this case is still ongoing, during his run for president, you could face a very unprecedented and challenging situation,” Mariotti says. “[Trump] would be subject to a criminal enforcement action by a state, which would pose a lot of serious constitutional quandaries.”

Kelsea Ballerini proved she’s always and forever a Swiftie! The 29-year-old country star paused her own Detroit concert to ask fans about Taylor Swift‘s “The Eras Tour,” which was going down live 2,000 miles away in Glendale, Arizona! “I just have one question. I’m gonna stop after this but I just have one question,” she said in a video captured on Friday, March 17 and shared to TikTok. “Has she … is ‘Cruel Summer’ on the setlist?” she then inquired, referencing the viral hit off 2019’s Lover.

Kelsea stunned as she wore a shiny gold dress on stage, also holding a very important instrument: her guitar. As fans cheered back at her, seemingly giving her a “yes” to the track making the the cut. “It was?!” the “Peter Pan” singer then replied as she blowed a kiss in the air — much like many Swifties who were lucky to be in the Arizona arena on Friday night. “Wow, that’s my Super Bowl, I gotta be honest…Alright. Wow. That’s all I needed to know. Thank you for that,” she then said.

“Cruel Summer” was perhaps one of the most long awaited songs for a live performance, which initially would have been part of Taylor’s 2020 Lover Fest which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after, the GRAMMY winning singer dropped her surprise album Folklore, followed by sister project Evermore just months later in December. Most recently, she released concept album Midnights, which has spawned hits like “Lavender Haze,” “Vigilante S—,” and “Karma.”

Taylor played for three hours and 12 minutes as she took fans through the various “eras” of her career which a shockingly long 44 song set list from albums Speak Now, Red, 1989, and more. The costume changes were also impressive, as Taylor paid tribute to some of her most iconic performance and music video looks over the years, including a gold, glittery gown for “Love Story,” the top hat and black shirts for “22” (along with a t-shirt that read, “not a lot going on at the moment”), a Speak Now era fringe dress and more.

YouTube TV is getting pricier, as Google has raised the monthly subscription fee of the service by $8 — an increase of 12.3%.
In a notice to customers, YouTube TV said, “As content costs have risen and we continue to invest in our quality of service, we’ll be adjusting our monthly cost, after 3 years, from $64.99/mo to $72.99/mo, in order to bring you the best possible TV service.” New subscribers to YouTube TV will see the higher price effective Thursday (March 16), and existing members will see the price hike on their first monthly bill on or after April 18.
The price hike comes after YouTube TV dropped MLB Network from its lineup when the streamer’s previous deal with Major League Baseball expired Jan. 31, 2023 — and the two sides failed to reach a new agreement.
YouTube TV last increased the price of its base plan in June 2020, when it hiked that from $50 to $64.99 per month. The updated $72.99 monthly price will continue to include more than 100 channels, including local ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC broadcast channels in most markets, plus a cloud-based DVR with unlimited storage, up to six accounts per household, and three concurrent streams. Customers who currently have a discounted price for YouTube TV’s base plan as part of a promotional offer will not see their rates go up until the special deal ends, after which they will be charged the standard price of $72.99/month.
“We are committed to offering a premium way for you to stream TV, but understand this new price may not work for you,” the internet service said in announcing the price increase. “We do hope YouTube TV continues to be your service of choice, but we want to give you the flexibility to cancel at any time.”
At the same time, YouTube announced that it is lowering the price of its 4K Plus add-on from $19.99/month to $9.99/month.
In December, Google inked a rich seven-year deal for NFL’s Sunday Ticket on YouTube — which, for the first time starting with the 2023 football season, will be available to anyone in the U.S. without the purchase of a pay-TV package (as was the case with previous longtime distributor DirecTV) and as an add-on to YouTube TV. Google hasn’t yet disclosed pricing for Sunday Ticket.

Bill Maher was in his frequent “down with religion” state of mind during Friday’s “Real Time,” landing a one-two blow to both the Catholic church and his favorite former president to razz, Donald Trump.
It being St. Patrick’s Day and all, Maher’s New Rules began with a shout to Ireland, which quickly turned into a political comparison of the country’s division over religion to the current state in the Republican party.
“[Ireland] went through a period where political hatred born of religion turned into something called ‘the troubles,’ which meant the hatred got so bad it could not be contained by the usual means of disagreement. So people lived with bombings and sniping and urban warfare, which Tucker Carlson calls sightseeing,” Maher said, cutting to images of Trump supporters storming the Capitol on Jan. 6.
“Politics has become our religion,” he continued. “We used to pray for the nation. Now each side prays the other side doesn’t destroy the nation. On one side, the ‘church of woke’ wants to cleanse us of our past. And on the other, the cult of Trump wants to resurrect it.”
Maher pointed out that Trump is often depicted as some kind of religious warrior, an image which he enforces with his choice of language.
“Now he’s talking like an end-times religious nut,” the comedian said. “He speaks about an epic battle against sinister forces and says, ‘I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.’ Oh, Jesus. Thanks, Batman!” Maher added, rolling his eyes.
And what began as a compliment to Pope Francis for starting a conversation about ending celibacy for priests, pivoted to a putdown of the Catholic Church which he leads.
“Many are so excited that they already have an app now where you can meet priests. It’s called Grindr,” Maher said, referencing the popular dating app targeting the LGBTQ community.
“But good for Francis,” he continued. “We’re pointing out that the church only demanded celibacy from priests beginning in the 11th century. And when they did, it was so that instead of leaving their money to their own children after they passed, priests would give it to the church — who ironically, after all these centuries, wound up giving it to children,” inferring the church’s history of charges it continues to face of sexual misconduct against boys.
You can watch the entire New Rules segment in the video at the top, which also includes a(nother) takedown of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who he calls the “National leprechaun.”

Apart from being the women force of the Great Imperial Family of Britain, members like Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and others are official trendsetters for the present generation. Everything that they put on, may it be a casual outfit for a state visit or a breathtaking gown for an occasion, becomes a hot topic among fashion nerds and followers. Not only the royals, but a handful of other top-ranking British celebrities like Harry Styles, also have a humongous role in setting the trends for the day.

Needless to say, there is a heaven-and-hell difference between what the Princess of Wales wears and the outfits chosen by A-grade performers like Harry Styles. However, in a rare occurrence, both the Princess of Wales and the Prince of Pop ran lines with a similar silhouette. Surprisingly, it suits royal attire and goes for a vibrant stage show, as well. Peplum for the run it is!

For the royals, the week prior to this was marked by the Commonwealth Day Service. Attending the same, Kate Middleton looked chic in an elegant navy blazer peplum with printed white minimalistic designs all over. Accessorizing it with a navy blue clutch, she paired the same with similar-colored pumps.

As reported by People Magazine, this came just a month after the Don’t Worry Darling star wore peplum at various promotional events. Not only he, but his co-star, Florence Pugh, for the movie also sported a peplum with a gorgeous strapless red gown. The former One Direction member, on the other hand, paired his, while rocking a breathtaking black suit jacket.
How to get the Kate Middleton and Harry Styles-esque Peplum for yourself?
While serving as both a subtle choice for official occasions and also as a dramatic party wear, it is understandable why most celebrities are now inclined towards peplum. The comfort, as well as the elegant looks which radiate from a simple extension at the waist, is truly a pleasing choice that most would prefer.

"Do Not Come Out" – 21 Shocking
Taylor Swift stood on stage at State Farm Stadium, lights bouncing off her bedazzled leotard, and absorbed the sound of the 70,000 or so fans in front of her.
“I don’t know how to process all of this and the way it’s making me feel right now,” she said. “I can’t even go into how much I missed you because there’s no way to verbalize it.”
What Swift could put into words Friday night as she kicked off the Eras tour — her first road show since 2018, since the beginning of the pandemic, since the release of four separate studio albums (and rerecorded versions of two older LPs) — was how this whole thing would go. “Tonight we’re gonna be going on an adventure,” she told the audience. “We’re gonna be exploring the last 17 years of music that I’ve been lucky enough to make and you’ve been kind enough to care about.”
Which, OK, sure — that’s how tours by famous and beloved pop acts work. And yet this show did actually feel like a novel experience, with a whopping 44 songs from all 10 of Swift’s studio albums parceled out in distinct chapters over three hours and 15 minutes. Each section had its own costumes and color scheme: that sparkly pink leotard (and matching boots) for 2019’s “Lover,” for instance, and a flouncy ballgown for 2010’s fairy-tale-obsessed “Speak Now.” For the portion of the concert dedicated to “Red,” the breakthrough 2012 smash that set her on the path toward superstardom, Swift, 33, wore a version of her T-shirt from her “22” music video, only instead of reading “NOT A LOT GOING ON AT THE MOMENT,” this one read, “A LOT GOING ON AT THE MOMENT” — a subtle yet meaningful tweak meant to flatter the attentiveness of the many eagle-eyed Swifties in the house.
At its best, Friday’s show complicated the emotional unbottling involved in the performance of a great pop song.
(Kevin Winter / Getty Images for TAS Rights Management)
Indeed, Friday’s production rolled out like fan service of the most thorough and elaborate kind. “We have a lot of time for me to try to sum up how I’m feeling about how much I’ve missed you and how happy I am to see you,” Swift told the crowd at one point, doing what she could to repay a sense of demand so intense that Ticketmaster crashed when tickets for the 52-date tour went on sale last fall. (Swift is scheduled to wrap the tour with a five-night stand at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium in August.)
But the concert was also a showcase of the range and versatility that have made Swift the most successful singer-songwriter in an age defined by hip-hop. She offered yearning acoustic ballads like “Lover” and “Enchanted,” her voice high and winsome; she sneered through sarcastic electro-pop tracks like “Look What You Made Me Do,” “You Need to Calm Down” and “The Man,” the last a sly commentary on restrictive gender roles that played out on a set designed to look like an office.
Accompanied by a band that included four backing vocalists, she burrowed into the intricate bedroom-folk sounds of her twin pandemic LPs, “Folklore” and “Evermore,” singing “Invisible String” from atop a mock-up of a mossy woodland cabin. Flanked by dancers, she went big and shiny for the one-two punch of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” into “I Knew You Were Trouble,” then went even bigger and shinier for the section of the show devoted to “1989,” her most exuberant release. “Midnights,” which broke a number of sales and streaming records when it came out in October, got one of the night’s longest sequences as Swift strung together seven of its bleary R&B-adjacent cuts, including “Lavender Haze,” “Midnight Rain” and the Hot 100-topping “Anti-Hero”; in each she smeared the edges of her voice, using it for texture as much as for narrative.
Swift’s Eras tour will wrap with five shows at SoFi Stadium in August.
(John Shearer / Getty Images for TAS Rights Management)
Her photo-album approach inevitably played to the nostalgia of an audience that’s grown up with Swift. “Ready to go back to high school with me?” she asked before a sweetly strummy rendition of “You Belong With Me,” from 2008’s “Fearless” — one of the early LPs she’s lately remade in a shrewd campaign to reclaim the financial rewards of music whose ownership has changed hands a couple of times. Later, she reached even further into history for the lovesick “Tim McGraw,” her first single as a teenage country phenom, which she performed here on an upright piano painted with flowers. (The piano was on a small secondary stage at the end of a runway that jutted out onto the stadium floor, where Swift also did an unplugged-style take on “Mirrorball” in a slot she said would feature a different song every night of the tour.)
At its best, though, Friday’s show complicated the emotional unbottling involved in the performance of a great pop song. The concert’s highlight came at almost precisely the midpoint in a passionately determined run through the epic 10-minute version of Swift’s song “All Too Well” that arrived in 2021 on her rerecording of “Red.” On the album, “All Too Well” sifts carefully through the wreckage of a youthful romantic relationship with the wisdom of a few years’ worth of hindsight. Yet on stage here, slashing at an acoustic guitar while dressed in a glittering floor-length robe that gave her an almost wizardly vibe, she made the song into a kind of treatise on youth itself — on the illusions one allows oneself to buy into in the pursuit of a happiness that never lasts.
Talk about a lot going on at the moment: She’d promised a trip back through her past and delivered a dismantling of it instead.

Marvel Studios will reportedly be making major changes to its release plans for 2026’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
Four years have already passed since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, but fans still have over two years to wait until Earth’s Mightiest Heroes next assemble to take on Jonathan Majors’ Kang in 2025’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
But that’s just the beginning of the blockbuster antics, as that will be followed just one year later in 2026’s Avengers 6 – a Multiversal epic that is expected to bring back some familiar Marvel icons.
Those two May dates may remain the case for now, but many are expecting both Avengers blockbusters to come later than that as Marvel Studios makes a slew of delays to its upcoming MCU slate, although that may be a good thing.
In a recent tweet, The Cosmic Circus’ Alex Perez, a well-known insider, asked his followers to name things they don’t expect Marvel Studios to do “on the road to the Secret Wars movies.”
When a follower questioned his use of the plural of “movies” in referring to Secret Wars, Perez simply replied with a GIF from The Office of Stanley Hudson proclaiming “Did I stutter,” indicating the Multiversal epic is now expected to be adapted across multiple movies.
Currently, the official plan for the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga has the story culminating across 2025’s The Kang Dynasty and 2026’s Secret Wars.
The Marvel Studios Spoilers subreddit moderators previously shared in February they have heard from trusted sources that Marvel Studios was having “very, very early talks” about splitting Secret Wars from one movie into two.
Additionally, they noted the potential for Phase 7 to be pulled into the Multiverse Saga instead of opening the next saga as was previously expected.
Marvel Studios is currently in the midst of figuring out the stories for these Avengers 5 and Avengers 6, with Jeff Loveness and Michael Waldron, respectively, penning the two scripts. As this happens, the team is likely getting more of a sense of how to do Secret Wars justice, which may require two movies.
Secret Wars is truly a vast storyline with so much potential and countless unique opportunities to explore. Many comic fans have been saying since the movie was announced that the story should require at least two parts to properly do it justice, and, if these reports are accurate, Marvel Studios may have come to that realization.
On top of the Beyonder, who has been rumored to be a Kang Variant in the MCU, Doctor Doom serves as the secondary antagonist of Secret Wars. Perhaps splitting the adaptation into two movies, combined with a delay, will allow him to be introduced in a Fantastic Four sequel and appear in at least one of the parts.
This could ultimately leave the Kang-centric conclusion covering three movies, which many will be happy to hear as Hollywood simply can’t get enough of Jonathan Majors. Not to mention this will allow plenty of extra time for more exciting cameos and shocking surprises as the MCU has grown famous for.
The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars catching a delay now seems to be an inevitability as Marvel Studios pushes much of its movie and series slate back. Eventually, these delays are bound to have a knock-on effect that leads to the next Avengers blockbusters getting delayed by at least a year.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty hits theaters on May 2, 2025, and Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on May 1, 2026.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom could be an awkward transition point from the DCEU to James Gunn’s DC Universe. After the formation of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans are set to establish a new DC Universe to effectively commence with 2025’s Superman: Legacy. However, the DCEU still has four movies debuting in 2023, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to be the last in 2023’s holiday season.
With the multiverse adventure of The Flash, the introduction of parallel DC realities on the big-screen affords DC Studios a great pivot point into the DCU. However, the story of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might prevent that from being a fully seamless shift. That is due to the possibility of Aquaman himself, as the King of Atlantis, potentially having a rift with the surface world.
Set photos from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have shown a scene involving Arthur appearing to address the United Nations. Additionally, the movie’s plot is known to involve Arthur teaming up with his half-brother Orm a.k.a. Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson), who had been his enemy in the first Aquaman. With Orm having attempted to lead Atlantis to war with the surface world in Aquaman, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might see Arthur re-evaluate his half-brother’s perspective.
Arthur Curry, as a human-Atlantean hybrid, has mostly favored his surface world roots, as seen in Aquaman’s appearance in Justice League‘s Snyder Cut (also known as Zack Snyder’s Justice League) and in 2018’s Aquaman itself. However, becoming King of Atlantis surely has broadened his outlook. In witnessing the surface world’s pollution of the seven seas he rules over, Arthur might decide to issue an ecological ultimatum to the surface. While a fitting conclusion to an Aquaman movie in the abstract, it would not be an ideal franchise ending for the DCEU overall.
Complicating the analysis of the situation is the overall picture of the DCU’s first chapter being, in Gunn’s words, “less than half” revealed. That also comes amid rumors and speculation of some DCEU cast members continuing in James Gunn’s DC Universe plans. Whether Momoa’s Aquaman could be one of them remains to be seen, but with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom a sequel to the billion dollar hit that was Aquaman, the sequel might not be the end for the character.
The highly positive early reception to The Flash makes that an even more complicated picture of which characters or stories will be folded into the DCU. With DC Studios also having an Elseworlds label for movies like The Batman and Joker franchises, Momoa’s Aquaman could theoretically continue there, as well. In any case, the story and potential ending of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom makes it a rather bizarre off-ramp from the DCEU to chapter one of Gunn’s DCU, and only time and more details about the plans for the latter will make that picture clearer.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom could be
Blizzard has acknowledged the long queue times players have faced when attempting to play this weekend’s Diablo 4 beta.
The beta, which is open this weekend for players who’ve pre-ordered, and next weekend for everyone, opened to queues of several hours from some players.
Players also reported that once they were able to get into the game, crashes and the inability to connect with friends in order to play together dogged the experience.
Now, Diablo’s community manager has acknowledged this and thanked players for their patience.
In a post to the Blizzard forums, Adam Fletcher wrote: “The team is working through some issues behind the scenes that have been affecting players and causing them to be disconnected from the servers. For the time being, we are managing the rate of players entering the game until we have a full fix for the disconnection issues.”
He continued: “We are actively working on these issues for this weekend. Once these are resolved we will be able to increase the influx of players and queue times will be significantly reduced.”
Fletcher later provided a list of issues that Blizzard is currently tracking and hopes to resolve shortly, theses include:
Diablo 4’s beta runs from March 17 until March 19 for players who have pre-ordered the game. Those who haven’t will get a chance to experience the beta from March 24 until March 26.
The beta has no time limit, and players can progress until level 25, with almost all of the game’s first act included.
Rod Fergusson, general manager of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard, recently took to Twitter to state that the game isn’t planned for Xbox Game Pass, as Microsoft‘s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard rumbles on.

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Nick Faldo, and Aaron Judge are among the elite professional athletes who have benefitted from working with a sports psychologist. Now some esports stars are catching onto the idea.
Canadian sales agent Syndicado has acquired worldwide rights to The Gamer, a documentary that revolves around Verneri “Bona” Junkala, a talented 17-year-old CS:GO e-athlete whose goal is to be the best in Finland. Bona always comes in second place in Counterstrike, however, until he begins working with world’s best esports psychologist, Mia. The film directed by Finnish directors Petri Luukkainen and Jesse Jokinen makes its world premiere on Sunday at the prestigious CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen, screening in Nordic:DOX competition.
The sessions with Mia set Junkala “on a path to self-discovery to not only become a better player, but a better person,” according to a description of the film. “Unexpectedly, another player and old nemesis from the past, comes to take his position in the team. The mentorship between the psychologist and Bona is in the key role, while he must figure out how to balance the conflicts, burden of pressure and his own dreams before his professional contract runs out.”
“We were interested in the tricky combination of self-reflection and performance orientation,” the directors say of their film. “In competitive gaming, everything is penetrated by the expectations of success and what a player is able to produce to his team and sponsors. What kind of self-value can these young gamers achieve or upkeep in this competitive and money-driven environment? Through Bona, we wanted to capture the youth’s zeitgeist here, an age of performance-driven self-help.”
The Gamer is produced by Liisa Karpo and Marianne Mäkelä for Finnish production company napafilms in co-production with Erik Winker, Martin Roelly and Ümit Uludag for CORSO Film (Germany).
At CPH:DOX, Syndicado is also handling sales for Jesse McLean’s Dox:Award competition entry Light Needs, about the inner life of houseplants, and Greta Stocklassa’s Blix not Bombs, in the running for the F:act Award, about diplomat and UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, for which Syndicado also is executive producer.

@JeanneAllen you’re wrong and bad at research. I only attended a charter for high school. My public elementary school was transitioned to charter over a decade after I left. I did love my high school. That school is now defunct- which happens to charters often.

If you’re looking for a Riddick binge, Netflix has you covered this week, having added Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013).
Our favorite of the three is the newest title, released in theaters a decade ago.
The movie was the better-reviewed entry from the Riddick movie franchise, with critics praising the film for its action sequences, special effects, and Vin Diesel’s performance as the titular character. In contrast, others criticized the film for its derivative plot and lack of originality.

Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar for best supporting actress thanks to her role in “Everywhere Everything All at Once,” and she’s referring to her brand new golden statuette using they/them pronouns. Curtis appeared on “Today” following her Oscars victory and was asked by anchor Savannah Guthrie if “she named her,” referring to the Oscars statue.
“I’m in support of my daughter Ruby. I’m having them be a they/them,” a teary-eyed Curtis responded. “I’m going to just call them ‘them.’ They/them, and they are doing great, they’re settling in, and I just, in my life, I never saw it in a million years that I’d have this couple days, and I’m very moved by the whole thing.”
Curtis’ daughter, Ruby, came out as transgender to their family in 2020. The Oscar winner opened up to People magazine a year later about supporting Ruby and adapting to using they/them pronouns.
“It’s speaking a new language,” Curtis said. “It’s learning new terminology and words. I am new at it. I am not someone who is pretending to know much about it. And I’m going to blow it, I’m going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes…You slow your speech down a little. You become a little more mindful about what you’re saying. How you’re saying it. You still mess up, I’ve messed up today twice. We’re human.”
Curtis added, “But if one person reads this, sees a picture of Ruby and me and says, ‘I feel free to say this is who I am,’ then it’s worth it.”
Backstage at the Oscars following her win, Curtis called for more gender parity among the Oscar branches so that more inclusive nominations are possible moving forward.
“The bigger question is how do you include everyone when there are binary choices, which is very difficult, and as the mother of a trans daughter, I completely understand that,” Curtis said. “And yet to de-gender the categories, I’m concerned that will diminish the opportunities for more women, which is something I’ve been working hard to promote. The most important thing is inclusivity and more women…basically just more fucking women anywhere, anytime, all at once.”
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” swept the Oscars with seven wins, including best picture. Curtis’ co-stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won the Oscars for best actress and supporting actor, respectively.

When CPH:DOX shifted from a fall festival to a spring-based fest in 2017, it got out of IDFA’s shadow and grew into one of the most influential documentary events of the year.
“It made a big jump in prominence when it moved to March because it fit into the calendar in a more exciting way for a lot of documentary stakeholders,” Thom Powers, lead documentary programmer for Toronto Film Festival, says. “It became a great place for films coming out of Sundance to have a European launch. It’s also become a very significant place for films to make world premieres near the beginning of the year, which can then send them on a circuit, traveling to other festivals like Hot Docs or DOC NYC.”
Now in its 20th year, CPH:DOX is among the largest documentary film festivals in the world. This year’s lineup includes 200 docus, more than half of which are making world premieres. There are 61 competition titles in five international competitions, and for the first time in the fest’s history, all 13 films competing for the top Dox:Award are world premieres.
For 13 years, CPH:DOX took place in November in the weeks before IDFA, but in 2015 as international industry attendance expanded their presence at the all-doc fest, the decision was made to create more space to, as former Copenhagen Film Festival CEO Steffen Andersen-Møller, put it, “unfold CPH:DOX’s potential.”
“Ideally, (the date change) will ensure that CPH:DOX opens the year, and IDFA closes it,” Andersen-Møller said in 2015.
Margreth Olin’s “Songs of Earth” competes for the fest’s top prize, the Dox:Award
According to producer Julie Goldman, that’s precisely what happened.
“IDFA and CPH:DOX are wonderfully complementary,” she says. “They are both these very substantial and influential doc-driven festivals at the beginning and end of the year.”
Goldman, a two-time Oscar nominee who founded Motto Pictures, has three films at CPH:DOX this year: Roger Ross Williams and Brooklyn Sudano’s “Love to Love You, Donna Summer,” Maite Alberdi’s “The Eternal Memory,” and Nancy Schwartzman’s “Victim/Suspect.”
“Eternal Memory” and “Victim/Suspect” premiered at Sundance in January.
“It’s a wonderful next stop for both films,” Goldman says. “It’s a first look for international audiences.”
Powers, who will be at CPH:DOX to host the fest’s Morning with Filmmakers series, adds: “Since the beginning of CPH, they have made a real effort to bring international decision-makers from the worlds of distribution and festival programming. So it’s a place more than some other European documentary festivals, where filmmakers have a chance to really propel their career in different ways.”
Despite the fest’s growth, it remains a unique, community-based affair known for its enthusiastic audiences and upbeat vibes. It’s also a festival that doesn’t fear the nonfiction genre’s continual evolution of form.

“Eat Bitter,” directed by Ningyi Sun and Pascale Appora-Gnekindy, plays in the Dox:Award section
“CPH is a very curious festival,” says artistic director of CPH:DOX Niklas Engstrom. “For a while, we were boxed in as this crazy festival in Copenhagen focusing mostly on hybrid films. Of course, that is part of the festival’s history, and those types of films are still super interesting to us because they try to expand on the notion of what documentary is.” But Engstrom explains that in addition to the experimental, CPH:DOX programmers are also drawn to a wide variety of docus, including straightforward investigative journalistic projects.
The overall mission of CPH, Engstrom says, is to “expand on what documentary is and can be.”
The CPH:FORUM, which will feature 34 international projects, is a prime example of that mission. Film financiers from around the world and top representatives from streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon all descend on Copenhagen to attend the annual four-day event.
Fifth Season’s Blake Levin and Ariel Richter will be at there looking for docus to finance, equity finance, and/or partner on. Richter credits Tereza Simikova, head of industry and training at CPH:DOX, for making the FORUM stand out.
“One of the great things that Tereza does is that she recognizes what company mandates are and recommends which projects you should meet,” says Richter. “It’s very hard to try to connect sales agents and buyers with a curated list of projects. It takes time, and a lot of thoughtfulness, and she does it. Last year, everything she told us to focus on, we were interested in.”
Levin adds: “We are an independent film and television studio. Global storytelling and great storytelling are our mandates. That’s our interest in being able to go to CPH:DOX. Someone who can bridge the gap for us like Tereza and the festival is super valuable.”
Opal H. Bennett, co-producer for “POV” had heard plenty of chatter about CPH:FORUM over the years but never attended. This year she made the fest a priority.
“The feedback was you need to be there,” Bennett says. “Special things are happening there. There are special conversations going on. It’s really well curated. So I booked my flight.”

A convicted murderer who spent 51 years in prison has died at the Dorchester Penitentiary in New Brunswick.
In a release, Correctional Service Canada said Melvin Miller died while in custody on March 16. It said his next of kin have been notified.
A cause of death was not released.
“As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances,” the release said. “CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.”
At the time of his death, Miller had been serving an indeterminate sentence for first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery and assault of a police officer.
His sentence began on June 12, 1972.
