Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced a Fantastic Four movie at Disney’s Investor Day presentation in late 2020. Then at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, Feige announced a release date and that the movie about the quartet would kick off Phase 6. We recently learned the film is being pushed to May 2, 2025—that was after hearing director Matt Shakman say the film will shoot in London in 2024. Shakman said he would be announcing casting soon once the SAG-AFTRA strike ended. Now that strike is over, and rumors point to Pedro Pascal playing Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mister Fantastic.

Marvel Comics/Max

Daniel Richtman shared the report, and /Film confirmed with sources that Pascal is taking the role. Deadline, however, reports it’s still in negotiations. With Pascal’s very full schedule, it’s hard to imagine adding the superhero flick. Marvel movies aren’t exactly chill, and Reed would be a leading role. Pascal has the Gladiator sequel, The Last of Us, and The Mandalorian (though he’s largely been doing voice-over only for that role). Marvel hasn’t said anything yet, but here’s hoping they’ll tell us about Pascal as Reed and fill us in on casting for Sue, Johnny, and Ben. The Fantastic Four is Marvel’s first family and expectations for their arrival in the MCU are high.

We love the idea of Pascal as Reed. He could bring exactly the right kindness and sharpness for Reed. We know Pascal has the reluctant dad bit down, and Reed is that type of figure for the Fantastic Four.

Film Noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations.

The hallmark of film noir is a distinctive visual style with stark lighting effects, complex plots, morally ambiguous characters, and a pessimistic stance.

Let’s go over ten writing prompts inspired by the Film Noir genre together.

10 Writing Prompts in the Film Noir Genre

  1. The Mysterious Femme Fatale: A hard-boiled detective becomes ensnared in a web of deceit when a seductive woman with a dark past hires him to track down her missing husband, but all is not what it seems.
  2. The Last Goodbye: A seasoned hitman contemplating retirement takes on one last job, only to find out he’s been set up by his own employer. With the police and his former allies closing in, he must unravel the conspiracy before it’s too late.
  3. Shadows of the Past: A war veteran turned private eye is haunted by his wartime experiences. When a figure from his past reappears, he’s plunged into an underworld of smuggling and espionage that could either redeem or destroy him.
  4. Echoes in the Rain: A series of murders rattles a rainy city, and all victims are connected to a once-famous jazz club. An intrepid reporter dives into the city’s underbelly to uncover the truth, only to become the next target.
  5. Neon Lies: In a city where the bright neon lights cast deep shadows, a corrupt cop has to face his own demons when he is blackmailed into betraying his badge by the city’s most notorious crime lord.
  6. Whispers in the Dark: A secret affair leads to a string of blackmail and murder in the high echelons of society. A young detective must navigate through lies and deception to find the killer, but every clue leads to more danger.
  7. The Illusion of Truth: A magician with a sideline as a con artist gets in over his head when he’s caught between rival gangs vying for a hidden treasure. His illusions are the key to survival—if he can stay one step ahead.
  8. The Forgotten Witness: A witness to a crime wakes up with amnesia, holding the only piece of evidence that can convict a powerful mob boss. As fragmented memories return, so too does the threat to their life.
  9. Midnight at the Diner: At a lonely diner off the highway, the lives of several strangers intersect over the course of one night, leading to a chain reaction of events that brings hidden secrets to light.
  10. A Portrait in Smoke: A chain-smoking painter with a penchant for trouble finds himself in a deadly game of cat and mouse when his latest portrait reveals a crime scene that hasn’t happened yet—but soon will.

These ten prompts are your gateway into a world where the line between right and wrong is as blurred as the smoke in a dimly lit room, and every shadow could be hiding secrets untold.

Whether you’re penning a screenplay, a novel, or just a short tale, the dark allure of film noir is an invitation to explore the human condition through its most compelling contradictions.

Remember, in the world of noir, everyone has a story, and every story has its price. Until the next mysterious rendezvous, keep the intrigue alive and the typewriter clicking into the twilight.

Go get writing.

Film Noir is a cinematic term used

As part of New York City Mayor Eric Adams‘ “Working People’s Tour,” Adams was joined Wednesday in Sunnyside, Queens by labor leaders and film and TV partners to break ground on a new production studio that will create almost 1,000 construction jobs and around 750 permanent, full-time jobs.

The construction on East End Studios Sunnyside commences following the end of both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which shut down the film and TV industry for months, and just after construction began on Sunset Pier 94 Studios in Manhattan.

The production campus will be 340,000 square feet with three full-service, ground floor soundstages adding up to 75,000 square feet. It will also include a 15,000-square-foot rooftop flex stage boasting views of the Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan skylines.

The project comes at a cost of about $275 million and is slated for completion by the first quarter of 2025.

“Thanks to SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America securing fair deals for their workers, film and TV production is back in New York City — helping more than 185,000 New Yorkers get back to work,” Adams said.

“New York City is back, but our work is not done until every New Yorker has a pathway to success,” he continued. “We’re thrilled to see East End Studios bringing more than 1,500 jobs to the city and joining the ecosystem of successful local production spaces that are continuing to elevate Western Queens as a worthy rival of Hollywood.”

“The WGA East is committed to supporting a film and television community that can thrive and create jobs here in New York,” WGA East president Lisa Takeuchi Cullen said. “Now that writing services are a qualified, covered expense under the New York State Film Tax Credit Program, we are hopeful that more writers’ rooms will be located in New York, bringing more productions and filling soundstages like the new East End Studios Sunnyside Campus.”

Inspired by the classic theme park ride, Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ is a fun adventure filled with ghastly frights. Directed by Justin Simien (‘Dear White People’), the tale takes place inside a New Orleans manor where a mother and her son stumble upon the 999 happy haunts. This all-age film strikes a good balance of humor and horror with an adequate amount of jump scares that are perfect for the younger audience.

This isn’t the first time the classic ride got the live-action movie treatment. Eddie Murphy starred in the 2003 ‘The Haunted Mansion,’ but the film was criticized by both critics and audiences alike. The 2003 film received a 13% critics score and a 31% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The mansion has also been featured in ‘Muppets Haunted Mansion,’ a Halloween special that was released on Disney+.

Aside from the lore of the ghosts, there is an unexpected story of loss and grief. Ben Mathis (LaKeith Stanfield) was very passionate about his work in the paranormal until a tragic event that led to the loss of his wife. Ben became bitter and morose, giving up on his work in the paranormal until Father Kent recruited him to investigate the mansion. Throughout the film, it is revealed why certain spirits are drawn towards Ben and other individuals with a similar story.

The movie did a great job of adapting the fan-favorite attraction onto the big screen to include many Easter Eggs. Pulling distinguished scenes directly from the ride, such as the Stretching Room and its portraits, the endless hallway, the seance room, and the ballroom scene.

The film also highlighted characters such as Madam Leota (Jamie Lee Curtis), The Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto), the hitchhiking ghosts, Constance the Bride, and more as some of the spirits haunted Gabbie and crew.

Director Justin Simien was a former Disney cast member, and with the Haunted Mansion being one of his favorite attractions from the theme park, he and writer Kate Dippold made sure the mansion was presented in its truest fashion.

Marvel Studios’ “Fantastic Four,” which will bring one of the most well known superhero teams in all of comics into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is zeroing in on one of its main leads.

Pedro Pascal is currently being eyed to play Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, a brilliant scientist who gains the ability to bend and stretch his body like rubber following exposure to gamma rays during a scientific expedition to outer space.

The role would continue Pascal’s hot streak of iconic characters. His career first took off with his memorable turn as Prince Oberyn Martell on “Game of Thrones,” and then hit a new height when he was cast as the titular bounty hunter on “The Mandalorian,” the first “Star Wars” TV and inaugural series for Disney+. The 48-year-old actor was recently nominated for an Emmy for his performance on the ongoing HBO series “The Last of Us.”

“WandaVision” director Matt Shakman will helm “Fantastic Four.” He took over from Jon Watts, who directed all three of Marvel and Sony’s “Spider-Man” movies with Tom Holland, after Watts exited the film. “Fantastic Four” is scheduled to open May 2, 2025.

Marvel Studios first scored the rights to the Fantastic Four in 2019, when Disney acquired 21st Century Fox. Prior to that, Marvel’s First Family — i.e., the first superheroes ever created for Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby — headlined three movies for Fox: 2005’s original “Fantastic Four,” its 2007 sequel “Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer” and a 2015 reboot that was poorly received. The first cast included Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards, Jessica Alba as Susan Storm, Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm and Chris Evans, before he went on to play the MCU’s Captain America, as Johnny Storm. The 2015 reboot cast included Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan, who also went on to star in the MCU’s “Black Panther” films, in those same respective roles. (In 1994, producer Roger Corman and German production company Constantin Film infamously shot a low-budget “Fantastic Four” movie in order to keep the rights to the property, but it was never released in theaters.)

This won’t be the first glimpse of the Fantastic Four in the MCU. In 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” John Krasinski appears in a brief cameo as an alternate universe version of Reed Richards — before he’s ripped to shreds by the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Krasinski’s role was a nod to Marvel fans’ pleas to cast him as the hero in the years following Disney’s acquisition — with his wife, Emily Blunt, as the fan favorite to play Susan Storm, aka the Invisible Woman, who gains the ability to project powerful force fields and turn invisible at will.

Along with Susan Storm, castings for the other two main characters in the title quartet — Susan’s hotheaded brother Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch; and Reed’s best friend Ben Grimm, aka The Thing —  have yet to be announced.

A treacherous puzzle that lies near the end of Myst, the 1993 point-and-click video game, involves a pipe organ and a spaceship.

But Jennifer Miller Hammel, a pianist who got the game as a child for Christmas that year, did not have much trouble finding the solution. The experience even showed her that video games could deeply incorporate music.

Hammel, 44, is now a trained opera singer and a host at Classical California, a classical musical radio network that is a collaboration between KUSC in Los Angeles and KDFC in San Francisco. But she still loves video games, gravitating toward action-adventure and role-playing series like Fallout and Mass Effect. After nearly 150 hours of space exploration, she recently completed Starfield.

The musical themes to Fallout 3 or Skyrim would occasionally be played at Classical California, Hammel said. But whenever she pitched an hourly show or a podcast that would dig deeper into video game music, she was told that the genre was polarizing.

This year, Hammel was finally given the go-ahead to develop an on-demand web stream — if she could find enough video game music to fill it. Within an hour of searching Spotify, she had tracked down 12 hours of relevant songs.

When a producer suggested including some classical music as well, Hammel set out to identify works that have been used in video games. There was Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” in Return Fire, and Mozart’s “Dies Irae” (or “Day of Wrath”) from his Requiem in Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Saints Row IV and Forza Horizon 3 both featured “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, while Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” made an appearance in Cyberpunk 2077.

“We tried to eliminate that roadblock of, Well, is this going to be too scary for a classical audience?” Hammel said of programming video game music. “But then also, is there a way that we can introduce some classical music to a gaming audience? And it became a really wonderful, gratifying piece of discovery.”

In a recent interview, Hammel spoke about the challenges and joys of bringing together the two kinds of music in the web stream, called Arcade, which was made public this month. Here are edited excerpts from the conversation.

Arcade includes a lot of famous classical pieces that have been used in video games, like Schubert’s “Ave Maria,” Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” and Verdi’s “La donna è mobile” from “Rigoletto.” Do you see these as gateway works for listeners who are new to classical music?

In the case of “Clair de Lune,” I chose the orchestral version that’s on the stream with intent. There’s something about that version of the work that really lends itself to that beautiful, dreamy atmosphere. I feel like if a listener has never heard Debussy before, they’re going to hear that arrangement of “Clair de Lune” and they’re going to go, “Oh, wait, is there more of that out there that I can get?” And it might introduce them to pieces like “The Sunken Cathedral” or “La mer.” Because it’s programmatic music, like so much of video game music, they’ll get this incredible story and this incredible sense of journey by hearing these pieces.

How did you decide which performances to use? For example, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is by the Youth Orchestra of Venezuela under Gustavo Dudamel.

I just think he’s one of the most recognizable and dynamic conductors working today. Even if you’re not embedded in classical circles, you’re going to hear “Gustavo Dudamel” and you’re going to go, “Oh, yeah, I know him.” He’s conducted. He’s done work for John Williams. He’s done work for Disney. And so I really wanted to get that name recognition in there.

With the performance of “Ode to Joy” that’s on there: I’m an alum of Westminster Choir College, so I really wanted to include the Westminster performance.

As you researched, were you surprised by any deep cuts incorporated by a video game, maybe one piece that isn’t as well known?

There’s an indie game called Gerda: A Flame in Winter that came out last year that’s set during World War II during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. And the prelude from Richard Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger” is featured in it. Sure enough, it’s this beautiful atmospheric indie game that features this very boisterous piece of Wagner.

That’s a great example. I have not played that game, but I am interested now. I imagine that Classical California, like The New York Times, has an older audience and that it wants to reach younger generations. How does Arcade fit into the organization’s mission?

Our big mission statement is “nurturing a love of classical music for all,” and I take that “for all” portion of the statement quite literally. I was really happy when I was given the green light to put this together because I feel like in classical music, there’s sort of a gate-keeping mentality that it has to stay a certain way.

When Classical California said, “Let’s go ahead and do this,” I was like, “Great, we’re being brave or being bold or trying to be pioneers in this field and really reaching out to that younger demographic.” But at the same time educating our older demographic on this other kind of music. I think when they think video game music, they think it’s loud or it’s synthesized and there’s lots of rock and guitars. And, yes, that does exist. But there’s so much music out there that sounds just like what you would hear from Brahms or Schubert.

I really wanted to speak to them and speak to our younger audience as well. Every time we play a piece of video game music on our regular airwaves, we get such a reaction from younger listeners: “Oh my God, I can’t believe you played themes from Super Mario Bros.”

You mentioned one preconception of video game music as being loud with guitars. Are there any other particular ideas you hope to dispel for an audience that may be encountering classical or video game music for the first time?

The big thing I want everyone to take away from this is that there are no borders here: Good music is good music. And for me, if a piece of music makes me feel something, if it tells me a story, then I’m glad I’ve heard it.

I really want to dispel that idea for our older crowd that game music is dumb. I think they think that it’s written by composers who are less than, composers who were not educated — that it’s dumb, simple, bleep-bloop music.

I’ve met and talked to so many of these incredible artists that create this music. And they are just as interested and invested as any modern classical composer.

To your point about music that makes you feel something, is there a piece of video game music that transports you instantly to a particular time or place?

I remember the first time I played Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, which is a fantastic indie game from the Chinese Room. It’s what they call a walking simulator, where you’re just walking around gathering evidence, reading journals, reading letters and trying to piece together a story.

You’re in the middle of this deserted British village. You have no idea what’s happened; it’s like everybody just got up and walked away. And I’m walking through the town and all of a sudden I hear this soprano just start singing. And all of a sudden this choir comes in. In the game, I just had to stop what I was doing and stand in this field, and just listen to this music.

I just remember thinking, “Who wrote this?” And then I started going down the rabbit hole of Jessica Curry. Her music does something to your heart when you hear it. It shatters you. Her choral music is up there with some of the great modern choral composers like Morten Lauridsen and Ola Gjeilo. And I’m so happy to be able to introduce her stuff to a broader audience.

We talk about driveway moments in radio, and for me that was the video game equivalent.

Sometimes I think that even gamers don’t necessarily appreciate the music. Game reviews often focus on narrative, mechanics, graphics, the interactive aspects of the medium. How important are soundtracks to the creative whole?

A good modern example would be Starfield. Yes, Starfield is very much about the experience of discovering the story, your relationships with the characters, getting out there and seeing the thousand different planets you can explore. But also, when the game was being developed, Inon Zur came on board. And Bethesda Game Studios was very much about, “We want this game to sound a certain way.” And so he worked very closely with their sound designer, to have the music be part of that whole experience. There are places in the game where you’re solving puzzles and there are musical cues that Inon built into his score to help you navigate.

What’s the most interesting or unexpected feedback you’ve received since Arcade launched?

I had an older, more traditional listener tune in and his comment to me was, “I had no idea.” That right there was why I did this, because I wanted to take my traditional listeners out of their comfort zone and have them discover something new.

Some gaming music, like the themes for Mario and Halo, have become recognizable pop culture artifacts. Do you think that there are works for video games that might be remembered centuries from now?

“One-Winged Angel” from Final Fantasy VII: “Se-phir-oth!” That’s such an earworm of a piece. “Dragonborn” theme from Skyrim. I do think that there are pieces on there that are just so powerful. Halo is another great one. You hear those melodies and you’re instantly taken to a certain place. I feel like they could be timeless.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 8 of “The Masked Singer,” “Trolls Night,” which aired Nov. 15 on Fox.

Metta World Peace knows he’s not a great singer, but “The Masked Singer” is the one place where you can get away with it. Well, one of two places.

“The only place you’re really allowed to sing if you’re not a singer, is the shower and ‘The Masked Singer,’” the former NBA star told Variety. “I had the perfect excuse. So, I really don’t want to hear anything from anybody saying ‘Metta can’t sing, was he trying to come out with an album?’ Nope, I was on ‘The Masked Singer.’ And I get a pass.”

Metta World Peace was revealed on Wednesday as the latest celebrity to participate in Season 10 of “The Masked Singer.” He appeared on the show as the Cuddle Monster, performing “You Got It (The Right Stuff),” by New Kids on the Block.

“I had a fun time singing that song,” he said. “And I also had a fun time learning how to sing and how to bring out the best for my horrible vocals.”

The costume was a bit unwieldy, however. “I’m a big guy, but I’m not as strong as I used to be,” he said. “So, I did sweat a lot. I did have to get a massage after because the costume was very heavy. I should have stretched out, I should have done yoga. If I would do anything differently, I would have done yoga before I got into that suit.”

The show’s panelists were all in the basketball headspace, but none of them guessed the right player under the costume. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg thought it was Tristan Thompson. Ken Jeong picked Draymond Green. Robin Thicke named Dennis Rodman. Nicole Scherzinger went with Shaquille O’Neal.

“Shaq is way bigger, taller,” World Peace said. “I’m like, ‘damn, I look like Shaq?’ But when they said Dennis Rodman, I was like, it’s over. They got me for sure. And then they couldn’t guess me, because I haven’t been active like that. I’ve been very quiet and doing my own thing lately.”

The two singers with the least number of votes, facing off in a smackdown to determine who would be unmasked, were Cuddle Monster and Anteater (in the bottom two for the second week in a row). The two contestants sang their own take on “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” by Justin Timberlake. Anteater moved on to the Group C finale, while Cuddle Monster was unmasked.

It was “Trolls” night on “The Masked Singer,” a tie-in to the new Universal Pictures release “Trolls Band Together.” As part of that integration, contestants on this week’s show sang songs from various boy bands.

Metta World Peace as Cuddle Monster joins Luann de Lesseps as Hibiscus, Tyler Posey as Hawk, Billie Jean King as Royal Hen, Michael Rapaport as Pickle, Tom Sandoval as Diver, Anthony Anderson as Rubber Ducky and one-time special guest Demi Lovato as Anonymouse as the Season 10 unmasked celebrities so far.

This was week two of Group C. (The Group A Finals will include S’more, Cow and Gazelle, while the Group B Finals will feature Tiki, Husky and Sea Queen. Group C Finals will be between Anteater, Candelabra and Donut.)

“The Masked Singer” features a new format this season, with three groups followed by Battle Royale semi-final episodes. The season also includes the return of Wild Card contestants, with one Wild Card introduced to each group, and the “Ding Dong Keep It On Bell” is back in the Battle Royale semi-final episodes, where the judges can choose to save one contestant from elimination and move them directly to the finale.

With sixteen total celebrity singers, Season 10 features new costumes including “Donut,” “Anteater,” “Hawk,” “Hibiscus,” “Diver,” “Gazelle,” “Royal Hen,” “Husky,” “Tiki,” “Pickle,” “Rubber Ducky,” “Candelabra,” “Cow,” “Sea Queen,” “Anonymouse” and a life-size “S’More.” Also returning to mark the show’s 10th are celebrities who have been previously unmasked since the show began. According to the show, Season 10 contestants “boast a combined 40 medals, 33 Grammy nominations, seven hall of fame awards, three lifetime achievement awards and over 50 tattoos.”

The season’s themed episodes will include a tribute to Elton John; a “Trolls Night” tied to the November release of DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls Band Together“; a “Harry Potter Night” airing the week of Halloween; “NFL Night”; “One Hit Wonders”; “Disco”; “2000s Night”; “I Wanna Rock”; and “Soundtrack of My Life.” Back for Season 10 are host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke.

Here were the other performances on this week’s episode:

That’s why I’m so competitive at everything I do. Whether it’s music or sports. It’s pushed me to become a star in my game. I wrestled in high school and was so good I could have gone to college for it. But I needed more. So I drove race cars, earned a competition license and like a boss, I raced all over America and the U.K. Behind the wheel feels like home sweet home. You can talk to talk, but in these challenges you’ve either got it or you don’t. That’s why I’m here to prove that I got what it takes to win it all. Who doesn’t love a little competition?”

I think I get my fighting spirit from my childhood. Growing up, I had to be tough. My mom was in and out of my life, and I was on my own a lot until some family friends took me in. But I’ve learned from a young age that the only person I could really depend on was myself. I’ve worked hard for everything I’ve got, and I always strive for more. Because I’m never fully satisfied. So tonight, I’m not resting on the prasie from last week. I’m going to go out on that stage and fight like I always have.”

From movies to music to marrying my soulmate, life has been pretty sweet. For decades, I’ve been entertaining you. But recently I’ve been keeping more to myself. Because the love of my life is no longer here. And it has left a huge hole in my heart. We did everything together. We had the same dream of owning a studio, and actually did. I still can’t believe she’s gone. And most days, I just feel lost. But I try to honor her memory every day by doing something brave. It’s the whole reason I’m here. And it makes me smile knowing how much she would love it. And by the way, that’s what I call her, my smile.”

But lucky for me, I got out because of my passion. A generational talent. I had sponsorship deals, sneakers, even a record or two. Despite all that fame and recognition, my trauma was keeping up with me and I couldn’t quiet the monster inside. I was self destructive during the peak of my career. I couldn’t figure out why I was always unhappy and defensive. So I took a giant step and asked for help. I learned the tools to tame the rage through meditation and positive energy. Never let your circumstances determine your fate. Soemtimes, all you need is a change in perspective and persona to let your inner cuddle monster sing.”

President Joe Biden on Wednesday said he had made it clear to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that a two-state solution was the only answer to resolve Israel-Palestinian conflict and said Hamas commited war crimes by storing weapons in a tunnel under a Gaza hospital.

‘You have a circumstance where the first war crime is being committed by Hamas by having their headquarters, their military, under a hospital. And that’s a fact. That’s what happened,’ Biden said.

He also noted ‘I made it clear to the Israelis — to Bibi and his war cabinet — that I think the only ultimate answer here is a two-state solution.’

In a show of solidarity, non-Jewish activists and organizations – including a former congresswoman from Mexico and the founder of ‘Blacks for Trump’ – joined the March for Israel in Washington, DC, standing alongside over 200,000 supporters.

Among the diverse group of allies, the event on Tuesday also featured prominent speakers, including Christian Pastor John Hagee and Pakistani-American Muslim women’s rights activist Anila Ali.

Rosi Orozco, a former Mexican congresswoman known for her tireless efforts against human trafficking, was spotted at the front of the march, proudly holding a sign that read ‘Christians stand with Israel.’

Israel has claimed to have found ‘concrete’ evidence that Gaza‘s biggest hospital Al Shifa was being used as a terrorist base after hundreds of commandos raided it early yesterday.

The IDF revealed evidence of weaponry which it said proved the hospital was a terrorist base, with spokesman Lt Col Jonathan Conricus showing a duffel bag hidden behind a hospital MRI machine containing an AK47 assault rifle, grenades, ammunition and a uniform.

He also said a backpack contained ‘what appeared to be very important intelligence including a laptop’, and dadded that security cameras in one part of the hospital had been taped over.

Temporary ceasefire ‘will happen’, Israel’s former deputy prime minister says

Israel’s former deputy prime minister Gideon Sa’ar has told Jewish News that his country’s government will agree to a temporary ceasefire, the publication reports.

Sa’ar did not specify when a ceasefire will be called, but suggested it would be done so in order to facilitate the release of Israeli hostages being held inside Gaza.

‘[It will be] a temporary short ceasefire in order to get our hostages out. There are ongoing negotiations to achieve that. And it will be achieved. We will see a temporary ceasefire,’ he said, according to Jewish News.

Sa’ar served as Israel’s Justice Minister until 2022 and was a political opponent of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His comments appear to contradict those of the prime minister who has previously ruled out a five-day ceasefire.

France investigates damage to Jewish headstones in First World War cemetery

French authorities say they are investigating damage done to Jewish graves in a German World War I military cemetery.

It comes as anti-Semitic acts multiply across the country.

In the cemetery, situated in the Oise region north of Paris, 10 Jewish gravestones were discovered damaged, the local prefecture said.

Prosecutors said they immediately launched an investigation into the incident, with a racist or religious motive a possibility, they said.

More than 1,500 anti-Semitic acts and comments have been recorded in France since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Tuesday. There have been growing tensions in France, home to large Jewish and Muslim communities, as war rages in the Gaza Strip.

The German cemetery in memory of World War I (1914-18) contains 1,903 graves of German soldiers, both Christian and Jewish. The Oise prefect, Catherine Seguin, called the defacing of the headstones ‘despicable’.

The world is still waiting to see evidence of Hamas terrorists’ secret headquarters hidden beneath Gaza City’s main hospital — hours after heavily armed Israeli soldiers stormed the medical facility in front of terrified patients and doctors.

Breaking: US says it did not give Israel green light to raid Gaza’s main hospital

The US did not give Israel any kind of green light for its raid on Gaza’s main hospital, the White House has said.

It added that such decisions were for the Israeli military to make.

‘We did not give an OK to their military operations around the hospital,’ National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters after Hamas said President Joe Biden was ‘wholly responsible’ for the raid.

History of Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital

This is not the first time the sprawling complex of buildings and courtyards that make up Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital has found itself in the middle of a conflict.

The complex is metres from Gaza City’s small fishing port and sandwiched between Beach refugee camp and the city’s Rimal neighbourhood. Its name comes from the Arabic word ‘healing’ – common for hospitals in the Middle East.

It was built in 1946 during British rule, two years before Britain withdrew from Palestine. It survived the Egyptian invasion in 1948 and two decades of Egyptian military rule over the Gaza Strip.

In 1967, Israel captured and occupied the Gaza Strip and in subsequent years, there were regular clashes nearby which sometimes moved into the hospital grounds.

In 1971, The Times reported a gun battle between a Palestinian militant who hid under a bed in the nurses’ quarters and an Israeli army patrol.

And on December 9 1987, the first day of the First Intifada against Israeli occupation during which Hamas was formed, Shifa was again pulled into the conflict.

A story from Reuters’s archive describes an Israeli army helicopter circling the hospital three times, before flying low over the wall and dropping tear gas onto the hospital’s central courtyard – where civilians are sheltering today.

‘Palestinian orderlies, patients’ relatives and students scattered in panic, their eyes streaming. A youth picked up the grenade and threw it out into the street,’ the report said at the time. One person yelled that they thought they were under fire.

In 1994, Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat’s security forces saluted the Palestinian flag when it was raised over the hospital after Palestinians were granted limited self-autonomy in Gaza during the Oslo peace process.

Hamas won a surprise election victory in Gaza in 2006. The following year, Hamas staged a military takeover of Gaza, forcing Fatah, the secular group that has long dominated the Palestinian Authority, out of the enclave.

During the power struggle building up to that takeover, fighters from both Fatah and Hamas were treated at Shifa and other hospitals, under the understanding that neither would harm the other side’s wounded.

Hamas has ruled Gaza ever since, but the hospital is staffed by medics paid by the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority based in the West Bank.

During a 2008-9 war in which more than 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed, Israel accused Hamas of using underground areas in Shifa to hide.

Hamas denied this, but Israel’s claim persists to this day.

WHO chief says raid of Al Shifa hospital is ‘totally unacceptable’

The World Health Organization’s chief has said that the Israeli military incursion into Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza was ‘totally unacceptable’.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference in Geneva that patients and staff must be protected even if hospitals were used for military purposes.

‘Hospitals are not battlegrounds,’ he said. ‘Israel’s military incursion into Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City is totally unacceptable.’

The WHO, a UN agency, also said it was ‘urgently exploring’ the possibility for evacuating patients and medical staff from the facility.

‘To make sure this can be enabled, of course there is a need for safe passage and also for fuel for the ambulances,’ said Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Peeperkorn said that according to the WHO’s latest information:

  • 34 of 39 premature infants in the hospital were still alive.
  • 82 bodies had been buried in a mass grave in the grounds.
  • A further 80 bodies remained unburied.
  • There was no oxygen, power or water at the hospital.
  • There are 633 patients there in total, plus around 500 staff and up to 4,000 people sheltering in the hospital grounds.

Conflicting Israeli statements about on-going raid at Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital

There have been conflicting Israeli statements about the on-going raid at Al Shifa hospital, as the world continues to wait for more detail.

One senior Israeli military official has claimed IDF troops found weapons and ‘terror infrastructure’ during a raid of Al Shifa hospital today, Reuters reports.

The senior official, who declined to be named, told reporters that soldiers were operating in a part of the hospital away from where medics and patients were.

‘IDF (Israel Defence Forces) soldiers have already found weapons and other terror infrastructure. In the last hour, we saw concrete evidence that Hamas terrorists used the Shifa hospital as a terror headquarters,’ the official said.

However, speaking subsequently on CNN, military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht did not mention whether any arms had been found, but said more information would be provided during the day.

‘We understand that there’s a substantial Hamas infrastructure in the area, in the vicinity of the hospital. Potentially under the hospital, and it’s something we’re working on. It’ll take us time. This war is a complex war,’ Hecht said.

Hecht said the Israelis forces went into a specific area inside the hospital, adding: ‘There wasn’t an all-out attack.’

He said fire was exchanged before the Israeli soldiers moved into the hospital but there was ‘no engagement whatsoever’ once they had entered.

We will bring you more information when we have it…

Israel’s UN ambassador express ‘indication’ over Iranian foreign minister’s UN meetings

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Meirav Eilon Shahar, has expressed her country’s ‘indignation’ that the ‘foreign minister of Iran (Hossein Amir-Abdollahian) is in Geneva and meeting UN officials’.

Shahar said on X (formerly Twitter): ‘Iran has no place in the future of Gaza. It is part of the problem, not the solution.’

The Times of Israel reported the meeting was hosted by the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. The centre said it ‘routinely convenes closed-door consultations to support conflict mediation and resolution in various parts of the world.’

Palestinians ‘should not be made to pay for Hamas’s crimes’: France

The Palestinian population should not pay the price for the atrocities committed by Hamas against Israel, France said on Wednesday, expressing ‘serious concern’ about Israeli operations inside the Al-Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip.

‘The Palestinian population should not be made to pay for Hamas’s crimes, even less so the vulnerable, injured or sick and the humanitarian workers who courageously continue their work in extremely dangerous conditions,’ the French foreign ministry said in a statement.

UN Refugee Agency confirms it has received first load of fuel in Gaza

The head of UNRWA, the U.N. relief agency for Palestinian refugees, confirmed Wednesday that it has received 23,000 liters (6,000 gallons) of fuel that crossed into Gaza via the Rafah crossing, but called for more to be allowed to enter the besieged territory.

  • The aid group says Israeli authorities allowed the fuel to enter under the restriction that it can only be used to transport aid into besieged Gaza.
  • ‘This fuel cannot be used for the overall humanitarian response, including for medical and water facilities or the work of UNRWA,’ Philippe Lazzarini said in an online statement.
  • UNRWA needs 160,000 liters (42,200 gallons) of fuel each day to complete ‘basic humanitarian operations,’ he added.
  • Israel declared war on Hamas and barred fuel shipments after its attack on Israel on Oct. 7, saying the group would divert the supplies for military use.
  • Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories, the Israeli defence body responsible for Palestinian affairs, announced early Wednesday that it would allow United Nations trucks to refill at the Rafah crossing on Wednesday. It said the decision was in response to a request from the United States.

‘There’s no place in Gaza we won’t reach’: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Wednesday there is no safe place for the Hamas terrorists behind the October 7 attacks and ‘no place in Gaza’ the army wouldn’t reach.

‘They told us we wouldn’t reach the outskirts of Gaza City and we did, they told us we wouldn’t enter Al-Shifa (hospital) and we did,’ he said hours after troops raided the territory’s biggest hospital.

‘There is no place in Gaza that we won’t reach.’

Gaza ‘carnage’ must end: UN aid chief

The United Nations humanitarian chief demanded Wednesday immediate action to ‘rein in the carnage’ in Gaza, after Israeli forces raided the Palestinian territory’s largest hospital.

‘As the carnage in Gaza reaches new levels of horror every day, the world continues to watch in shock as hospitals come under fire, premature babies die, and an entire population is deprived of the basic means of survival. This cannot be allowed to continue,’ Martin Griffiths said in a statement.

UN warns operations on the brink of collapse

Just hours after receiving its first delivery of fuel since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, the UN warned its operations in Gaza were on the brink of collapse.

‘To have fuel for trucks only will not save lives anymore,’ said Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. ‘Our entire operation is now on the verge of collapse,’ the UNRWA chief wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Islamic Jihad militant group says shot down Israeli drone in Gaza

The Islamic Jihad militant group said Wednesday its armed wing brought down an Israeli drone in Gaza, where it is fighting alongside Hamas.

‘We shot down a Zionist (Israeli) Skylark drone and took control of it,’ said Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades, as the war between Palestinian militants and Israel entered its 40th day.

Spain PM urges Israel to end ‘indiscriminate killing’ in Gaza

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday urged Israel to end the ‘indiscriminate killing of Palestinians’ in Gaza, in his sharpest criticism of Israel since since war against Hamas broke out over a month ago.

The Socialist premier reiterated he ‘stood with Israel’ in ‘its response to the terrorist attack’ carried out by Hamas in October, and promised his new government would ‘work in Europe and in Spain to recognise the Palestinian state’.

UN official condemns Israeli raids on hospital and says Hamas must not use it as a ‘shield’

The U.N.’s top emergency relief official on Wednesday condemned reported Israeli military raids on Gaza’s embattled Shifa Hospital and insisted Hamas militants must not use it as a ‘shield’ for their activities.

Martin Griffiths underscored growing international concern for the plight of patients in the Gaza City hospital who are too sick or frail to be moved.

‘Look, Hamas must not, should not, use a place like a hospital as a shield for their presence,’ he said in a video statement. He added, ‘hospitals should not become a place of – a war zone – of danger.’

Turkey PM Erdogan says Israel is a ‘terror state’ committing war crimes

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday Israel was a ‘terror state’ committing war crimes and violating international law in Gaza, while repeating his view that Palestinian militant group Hamas was not a terrorist organisation.

Speaking to lawmakers in parliament, Erdogan also called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to announce whether Israel had nuclear bombs or not, and added that the Israeli premier was a ‘goner’ from his post.

He said Hamas was a political party that had been elected by Palestinians.

Canadian PM tells Israel ‘killing of babies’ must stop

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday the killing ‘of women, of children, of babies’ in the Israel-Hamas war must stop, sparking a strong rebuke from Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trudeau said at an event in British Columbia province:

The world is watching, on TV, on social media, we are hearing the testimonies of doctors, family members, survivors, kids who have lost their parents.

The world is witnessing this killing of women, of children, of babies. This has to stop.

Netanyahu hit back at Trudeau’s criticism and wrote on X:

It is not Israel that is deliberately targeting civilians but Hamas that beheaded, burned and massacred civilians in the worst horrors perpetrated on Jews since the Holocaust. While Israel is doing everything to keep civilians out of harm’s way, Hamas is doing everything to keep them in harm’s way.

Netanyahu said it was Hamas, not Israel, that should be held accountable.

Red Cross says ‘extremely concerned’ over raid at Gaza hospital

The Red Cross on Wednesday voiced alarm over military activities at the Gaza Strip’s largest hospital that has been entered by Israeli forces who say they are tracking a Hamas command centre.

‘We are extremely concerned about the impact on sick and wounded people, medical staff, and civilians,’ the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement sent to AFP, insisting ‘all measures to avoid any consequences on them must be taken’.

First fuel truck enters Gaza from Egypt in first such delivery since war began

More details now on the news that a fuel truck entered Gaza through the Rafah border today – the first such delivery since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7.

  • An Egyptian source told state-aligned Al Qahera News the fuel would be delivered to the United Nations ‘to facilitate the delivery of aid after trucks on the Palestinian side stopped operating for lack of fuel’.
  • COGAT, the Israeli defence ministry body that handles Palestinian civil affairs, had said earlier that ‘UN trucks transporting humanitarian aid through the Rafah crossing will be refuelled at the Rafah crossing, per US request.’
  • Witnesses at the Egyptian border said two more trucks were waiting to pass through the crossing.

‘Stop this horror,’ UNICEF chief urges

The United Nations children’s agency says its top official visited the Gaza Strip early Wednesday and met with children and their families in the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, in the south of the territory.

‘What I saw and heard was devastating. They have endured repeated bombardment, loss and displacement,’ UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said. ‘Inside the Strip, there is nowhere safe for Gaza’s one million children to turn.’

She added: ‘The parties to the conflict are committing grave violations against children; these include killing, maiming, abductions, attacks on schools and hospitals, and the denial of humanitarian access – all of which UNICEF condemns.

‘I am here to do whatever I can to advocate for the protection of children. I once again call on all parties to ensure that children are protected and assisted, as per international humanitarian law. Only the parties to the conflict can truly stop this horror.’

Breaking: First fuel truck enters Gaza from Egypt: Egyptian media

The first fuel truck has entered the Gaza Strip from Egypt via the Rafah border, according to Egyptian media.

  • It comes after Israeli defense officials said they have agreed to allow fuel shipments into the Gaza Strip for humanitarian operations.
  • It is the first time that Israel has allowed fuel into the besieged territory since the Hamas militant group’s bloody cross-border invasion on October 7.
  • Israel declared war and barred fuel shipments after the attack, saying Hamas would divert supplies for military use. But fuel is key to operations at Gaza hospitals, which run on generators, and the shortages hindered the United Nations from delivering humanitarian aid.

GRAPHIC: IDF prepare to storm Hamas terror tunnels where terrorists lie in wait

Israeli forces are now massed near the gates of Gaza City’s main hospital, ready to storm the labyrinth of tunnels they say are underneath the medical centre where Hamas terrorists lie in wait.

Their aim is to enter the 300 mile network of tunnels that are below the Al-Shifa hospital and Gaza City as a whole and annihilate the terrorists who rampaged through Israel and slaughtered 1,200 Israelis.

But that is no easy task. Subterranean fighting is notoriously lethal work, especially when Israeli soldiers are fighting against heavily armed Hamas terrorists who know every hiding place and have access to a stash of rockets, grenades and guns.

The terrorists have operated within the complex network of reinforced tunnels underneath civilian buildings for years, some of which are buried up to 40ft underground and all of which could conceal an ambush, be booby-trapped – or worse – filled with explosives and primed to cave in.

This means the Israeli military will have to draw on a variety of technology and weaponry – like ‘killer’ drones, attack dogs and ‘sponge’ bombs – to help their soldiers ‘destroy’ the terrorists deep within the tunnels.

Witnesses describe seeing Israeli soldiers enter Gaza’s largest hospital

Israeli forces raided Gaza’s largest hospital Wednesday, targeting what they say is a Hamas command centre in tunnels beneath thousands of patients and civilians seeking refuge from intense combat.

  • Dozens of Israeli soldiers, some wearing face masks and shooting in the air, ordered young men to surrender, a journalist in contact with AFP said, as the army reported it conducted a ‘precise and targeted’ operation at the facility.
  • Youssef Abu Rish, an official from the Hamas-run health ministry who was in the hospital, told AFP he could see tanks inside the complex and ‘dozens of soldiers and commandos inside the emergency and reception buildings’.
  • The Israeli army described it as ‘a precise and targeted operation against Hamas in a specified area’ of the facility. The Palestinian militants have repeatedly denied concealing a base at the hospital.
  • After sharp warnings from the United States and others that Al-Shifa must be protected, Israel said the raid was being executed based on ‘an operational necessity’.

Doctors trapped inside al Shifa hospital describe ‘terrifying’ situation for trapped patients

Israeli tanks have rolled into the al Shifa hospital compound while scores of soldiers stormed buildings including the emergency and surgery departments, which house intensive care units, as patients screamed in terror as part of their mission to root out the terrorists, medics trapped inside said.

Mohammed Zaqout, the director of hospitals in Gaza, said the patients who are trapped inside the medical facility are terrified after they saw the heavily armed soldiers storm the hospital in the early hours of this morning.

‘They are screaming, it’s a very terrifying situation. We can do nothing but pray,’ Zaquot said.

Israeli soldiers storm Gaza’s al Shifa hospital in ‘targeted operation’

Israeli soldiers have stormed Gaza City’s main hospital to root out the Hamas terrorists US intelligence has said are hiding in underground command centre as Palestinian authorities have called for a ceasefire to evacuate trapped civilians.

The Israeli military entered the sprawling Al-Shifa hospital early Wednesday morning in a ‘precise and targeted operation against Hamas in a specified area’ of the facility, the IDF said, in what could be a pivotal moment in the bloody war.

Israeli soldiers and tanks had surrounded the hospital in recent days, where the IDF and US have insisted Hamas are hiding in underground tunnels beneath the building and using the patients as human shields – claims the terrorists deny.

But the storming of the hospital is a key moment in the war and will show once and for all whether Hamas terrorists have indeed based their secret headquarters underneath the hospital while using the most vulnerable civilians as human shields.

“Law & Order” star Jeffrey Donovan will not be returning to the NBC procedural, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

Donovan, who starred as Det. Frank Cosgrove in the show, won’t be back for the 23rd installment of the drama. According to TVLine, who first reported the news, Donovan exited the show due to creative reasons.

Joining the Dick Wolf series in Season 21, the former “Burn Notice” star remained on the series through Season 22 before exiting ahead of Season 23. Donovan is the latest “Law & Order” actor to exit the series, after Anthony Anderson left the show after Season 21. Anderson was replaced with Mehcad Brooks, who played Jalen Shaw in Season 22.

Hailing from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, “Law & Order” also features a main cast including Sam Waterston as DA Jack McCoy, Hugh Dancy as senior prosecutorial assistant Nathan Price and Camryn Manheim as Lt. Kate Dixon.

As Hollywood gets back up and running again after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Wolf Entertainment’s “Law & Order” and “Chicago” franchises are “well-oiled machines” that are among of the first shows expected to start back up again, according to a source close to the productions.

In addition to “Law & Order,” Donovan can be seen in “Surrounded,” “First Love,” “Breaking,” “National Champions,” “Wrath of Man” and “Honest Thief,” among others. Donovan also appeared as Det. Frank Cosgrove in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Organized Crime.”

Tom Holland made his first-post SAG-AFTRA strike appearance at Deadline’s Awardsline Screening Series panel for Apple TV+’s The Crowded Room. Akiva Goldsman created the series, inspired by the book The Minds of Billy Milligan, but changed the character from the real-life Milligan to the fictional Danny Sullivan.

Portraying a person who developed dissociative identity disorder, called Multiple Personality Disorder in the ‘70s when the show is set, took its toll on Holland.

“I did at one point ask for a week off,” Holland said. “I was really lucky to get it because I just really needed some time to reset before we went into the latter part of the show.”

Holland said the 10-episode series was more demanding than any single Marvel film in which he’s played Spider-Man.

“I’m used to three months and I’m done, I move on,” Holland said. “I’m also used to playing a superhero. It’s a very different thing. I’m talking about Thanos and spaceships and all that kind of stuff. You go home and nothing really changes.”

Playing Danny overflowed into Holland’s personal life, he said.

“I would dream as Danny,” Holland admitted.

Even changing his look caught him by surprise. Holland has a wild ‘70s haircut that even surprised him in the mirror most mornings.

“I had obviously that crazy haircut,” Holland said. “You laugh and yes, it’s funny but I would wake up in the morning and go to brush my teeth to get ready for work and be like, ‘Jesus, whoa, oh my God!’”

Holland said he undertook the task because of the value The Crowded Room could serve to viewers in similar circumstances. Danny developed alternate personalities after he was sexually abused as a child.

“The responsibility of telling this story and to educate people on what it is that Danny is going through, which lots of people are going through, was so important,” Holland said.

Goldsman followed up on his previous interview with Deadline in which he discussed surviving child sexual abuse. He said Danny is a hybrid of the real Billy Milligan and Goldsman’s experience.

“I have often tried to smuggle my own experience into other people’s stories,” Goldsman said. “It’s safer.”

Goldsman said survivors of abuse tend to signal to each other without even realizing they are doing so. He hoped that creating The Crowded Room could reach other survivors.

“Secrets are really toxic,” Goldsman said. “This was a way of saying, ‘Hey, we see you. You see us. It’s okay.’”

Goldsman said the process of addressing child sexual abuse in his art was healing.

“We grow, we heal, we take loss and pain and trauma and we try to convert them into grace or meaning, art,” Goldsman said. “Just that act is pretty redemptive.”

Many of the crafts team from The Crowded Room were also on hand for the panel to address technical aspects of the show. Script supervisor Jodi Domanic was the first person to suggest to Goldsman that Danny should take some time to reveal his abuse to psychologist Rya (Amanda Seyfried).

“The first thing I said to him was, ‘As a former clinical psychologist, I don’t think that Danny in his first session with Raya would talk about Adam’s sexual abuse,’” Domanic said.

Goldsman admitted he was taken aback and even joked about firing Domanic, but realized she was correct. This led to structural changes where the show gradually revealed Danny’s abuse and dissociative identities.

Editor Christopher Rand had to handle the shuffling of some of the episodes so that the early episodes spent more time getting to know Danny.

“We needed to learn about and love Danny before we saw this trauma,” Rand said.

Production designer Loren Weeks designed the barn that Danny imagines houses all of his identities. Holland’s brother suggested the barn and Weeks designed a barn to represent Danny’s mind.

“The idea was to anchor it in reality so it felt believable when you’re there in tighter scenes but to also give it a feeling of infinite scale,” Weeks said.

Weeks got the idea of the spotlight from the Minds of Billy Milligan book. Milligan described his personalities standing in a spotlight when they took over.

“The spotlight aspect of it came from the book,” Weeks said. “It was a spotlight on a stage.”

Goldsman grabbed Star Trek: Discovery and Strange New Worlds visual effects artist Leslie Chung to be the VFX supervisor for Crowded Room. Chung said she grew to love the show’s more subtle visual effects, including fireflies that Danny visualizes.

“It was, I think, the first time for me really being able to create gentle VFX that felt like the tone of the story,” Chung said.

Casting director Avy Kaufman said that everyone she cast, whether real-world characters or alters, revolved around Holland.

“All the actors had to keep up with Tom,” Kaufman said.

Music supervisor Sue Jacobs was responsible for licensing The Beatles’ “Let It Be,” which is significant to Danny and closes the final episode. Jacobs said the Beatles estate was won over by Goldsman’s message, expressed in a letter Goldsman wrote to them.

“I think the first thing that Akiva said was, ‘I want to make a mental health story that’s really positive,’” Jacobs said. “They came back and said, ‘How can we not do that?’ Then we kept adding on other uses. At some point it wasn’t affordable and they were like, ‘We don’t care, we really want to be part of this story.’”

Watch the panel conversation in the video above.

Poet Rita Dove and writer Paul Yamazaki will be the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Burton took over the role from actress Drew Barrymore, after her invitation to host was rescinded following her controversial announcement to resume her syndicated talk show amid the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes.

‘The National Book Awards is an evening dedicated to celebrating the power of literature, and the incomparable contributions of writers to our culture,’ the foundation said in a statement to The Los Angeles Times in September.

‘Our commitment is to ensure that the focus of the Awards remains on celebrating writers and books, and we are grateful to Ms. Barrymore and her team for their understanding in this situation.’

Barrymore later postponed the launch of the fourth season due to criticism, but the National Book Foundation had already decided to go with another host.

‘We are honored to have LeVar Burton — a longtime friend and ally of the National Book Foundation — join us to celebrate the power of stories,’ Ruth Dickey, executive director of the National Book Foundation, shared at the time.

Burton previously hosted the 70th National Book Awards in 2019.

The event will pick winners in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translated literature, and young people’s literature.

Is this a sequel to Captain Marvel or Misery?

As I sat in my car on the way home from the movie theater, several thoughts spun in my head about The Marvels.

The latest Marvel movie offers many positives, but it doesn’t quite get to the fireworks factory.

I wrote a review that you can read on MickeyBlog, but I’d like to dive a bit deeper now.

Captain Marvel wishes it were 2019Captain Marvel wishes it were 2019

Here are six thoughts I’ve had about The Marvels.

I’ll follow this up with a few thoughts about the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a companion piece next week.

Brevity Is the Soul of Wit

Source: Marvel/ Fox

An early comic book movie from the 1990s worked as a proof of concept and quickly developed into a franchise.

That title was X-Men, and the director of that project proved to be a monster.

Even before then, the individual’s directorial skills proved questionable, at least on X-Men.

Source: Marvel/ Fox

Fox threw away hours of footage in settling on a barebones 105-minute final cut that’s really closer to 95 minutes.

The people in charge of the editing bay, none of whom were Singer, correctly cut all the scenes and dialogue that didn’t work.

But X-Men got one thing very, very right, which was the casting, especially Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Source: Marvel/Disney

More importantly, X-Men deleted anything that involved stray characters who weren’t part of the core.

The editing bay team did this out of desperation more than anything else, but it helped strip X-Men down to its essential component: the Mutants themselves.

More than a quarter-century later, we are STILL seeing some of these characters appear in modern MCU titles.

The Marvels contemplate what went wrongThe Marvels contemplate what went wrong

Image: Marvel

Paraphrasing James Carville, it’s the characters, dummy!

With The Marvels, director Nia DaCosta got that part right.

The four characters who matter are Monica Rambeau, Kamala Khan, Carol Danvers, and Nick Fury.

Ms. Marvel is NOT a fan of Goose in The MarvelsMs. Marvel is NOT a fan of Goose in The Marvels

Image: Marvel

While Samuel L. Jackson is finally moving like someone in his mid-70s, the quartet provides the core of this story. And those are the parts that work the best.

Marvel saved this movie by cutting out all the fluff, although it came at a high cost…

Marvel Needs Better Villains

Dar-Benn is looking for revengeDar-Benn is looking for revenge

Image: Marvel

I’m writing this roughly 16 hours after I watched The Marvels, and there was a jaw-dropping Loki season finale in between that has distracted me.

So, my brain is bouncing around between multiple aspects of the MCU.

I’m currently trying to catalog the last two main Marvel stories we’ll get until next July.

Dar-Benn is just happy to be onscreen for a brief momentDar-Benn is just happy to be onscreen for a brief moment

Image: Marvel

Yes, What If…? has moved its release date up to Christmas 2023, and Echo will follow soon afterward. Those projects are afterthoughts, though.

Marvel is standing on Loki and The Marvels for now. Then, it’ll switch to Deadpool 3, having delayed Captain America: Brave New World until 2025.

As I watch the turmoil occur behind the scenes, I kinda want to grab Kevin Feige by the shoulders and scream, “IT’S THE VILLAINS!!!”

Dar-Benn isn't a fan of Carol Danvers in The MarvelsDar-Benn isn't a fan of Carol Danvers in The Marvels

Image: Marvel

That’s where Marvel has failed lately, and I can make this point simply.

You remember who the villain was in WandaVision, right? How about Black Widow or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

Sometimes, the MCU has taken a big swing, like the surprising reveal in The Eternals, but we live in a post-Thanos world. That’s the measuring stick for villainy.

Source: Marvel

Loki would qualify as well. That character also serves as proof that yesterday’s villain can become much more.

So, what happened to Dar-Benn’s scenes that caused Marvel to cut so much of the character’s role? Was it underwritten?

Did international events cause some of her Kree civil war storyline to become too hot-button?

We’ll find out at some point, but it’s crushing to know that Marvel shot hours of footage and only found a few minutes where Dar-Benn distinguished herself.

Zawe Ashton is an exceptional actress. She deserved better.

Characters and villains, Marvel. Characters and villains.

More Is More

I realize that the phrase “less is more” signifies a similar message to brevity being the soul of wit.

In the case of the MCU, more is more, though. It’s a tautology.

Specifically, this film reintroduces  S.A.B.E.R., the Strategic Aerospace Biophysics and Exolinguistic Response aerospace defense system.

I hope I look this good at 74.I hope I look this good at 74.

This unit functions as a Skrull/human initiative led by Nick Fury. We’ve seen pieces of it before, primarily in post-credits scenes, but that’s it.

In The Marvels, the plot finally takes us to an interstellar space station, about whom we learn basically nothing throughout the course of the film.

Well, some of the people working there suffer a grim, albeit hysterical, fate, but that’s about it.

The Marvels is so very kawaiiThe Marvels is so very kawaii

Marvel teased this S.A.B.E.R./Skrull storyline in Captain Marvel in 2019.

Four years later, we’re no closer to knowing anything about it other than that it’s in deep space.

The production crew constructed an entire orbital space set and then basically used it for one prolonged cat vomit gag.

Now, the joke landed. Nobody’s complaining about the joke. But who at Marvel thought that was enough storytelling on the space station?

No, this conversation isn’t going to go the way you think. It’s not about the box office, but it ties into what I just said.

A few years ago, the Philadelphia Eagles called themselves a dream team because they signed any number of high-profile free agents.

The veterans expressed confidence and had so much swagger during the off-season. Once the games started, they had no chemistry together.

Please don't grab me by the throat! Decapitation is my one weakness! Please don't grab me by the throat! Decapitation is my one weakness!

Image: Marvel

That team missed the playoffs, and many of the so-called stars quickly left for other teams.

Similarly, the New York Mets just had the highest payroll in the history of baseball.

The number rose and fell, depending on various interpretations of contracts and the luxury tax, but let’s use $380 million as a final total.

Hallmark is doing sci-fi stories now?Hallmark is doing sci-fi stories now?

Image: Marvel

The 2023 Mets won 75 games, which placed them nine games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks, who eventually made it to the World Series.

The Diamondbacks had a 2023 active roster payroll of less than $100 million. All-in, that team cost a frugal $143.2 million.

Where am I going with this? Having all the budget money in the world doesn’t matter if you won’t use it correctly.

Father and daughter encounter the oddities of the Quantum RealmFather and daughter encounter the oddities of the Quantum Realm

Image: Marvel

That orbital space station budget wasn’t a total waste, but it also wasn’t money well-spent.

Circling back to Secret Invasion, I kinda want to study the accounting ledger to figure out how Marvel burned $35 million an episode on a garbage series.

Marvel has fallen victim to the same mistake as the Mets and that previous Eagles team. It’s just throwing money at the problem and relying on star power.

ZemoZemo

Contrast that to the current Philadelphia Eagles roster. This team, which is probably the best in football as I type this, has built everything around a core of a solid offensive line and defensive line.

The Eagles (eventually) learned from their mistake and focused on building a sustainable foundation.

Marvel needs to get back to basics and do the same.

Casting Matters

Aunt May and Tony Stark in Civil WarAunt May and Tony Stark in Civil War

The recently fired Victoria Alonso built her pristine Hollywood reputation on a Midas Touch when it came to casting.

I’m working my way through MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios right now – expect some articles later – but something has jumped out.

People at Marvel had wanted Timothy Olyphant (!) to play Iron Man before Robert Downey Jr. entered the picture.

Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen at Captain America Civil War PremierePaul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen at Captain America Civil War Premiere

Due to how radioactive the troubled RDJ had been at the time, Marvel’s Board of Directors strongly resisted that idea.

Everything worked out okay in the end because Marvel banked on talent.

Similarly, no matter how my tone sounds here, The Marvels works as a movie because of the talent.

The Marvels contemplate what went wrongThe Marvels contemplate what went wrong

Teyonah Parris stole scenes on WandaVision and continues to excel as a charming, innately decent superheroine.

Brie Larson still isn’t the best at sounding tough, but she is so infinitely watchable on screen.

There’s a jump rope scene in The Marvels, and my two thoughts were 1) She’s so uncoordinated and 2) these three are so fun together.

Is this a sequel to Captain Marvel or Misery? Is this a sequel to Captain Marvel or Misery?

Finally, we have Iman Vellani, who is living her best life as a Marvel fan who has somehow had a genie grant her wish and allow her to become a part of Marvel.

If you’re familiar with Almost Famous, Iman Vellani is pretty much William Miller, which means she’s Marvel’s Cameron Crowe.

Vellani is currently writing Marvel comics, and she represents the future of the entire brand.

Kamala Khan has quite the active imaginationKamala Khan has quite the active imagination

Image: Marvel

Marvel should be playing up this fact whenever possible. From my perspective, Kevin Feige should start doing the Stan Lee cameos we all miss.

Later, after Feige stops doing them, that role should go to Vellani. Sixty years from now, she should still be the face of Marvel. I believe this.

I would love to watch the three actresses work together again. That’s exceptional casting.

Marvel Screwed Up. Again.

Image: Marvel

My final thought here is simple.

Marvel had absolutely no reason to air the season finale of Loki on the same evening that The Marvels opened in theaters.

Doing so served to discredit and diminish The Marvels, almost as if Marvel had no faith in the title.

For my part, I attended a 6:50 p.m. screening of the film, returned home at 9:30 p.m., and watched Loki’s finale immediately afterward.

By 10:30 p.m., all thoughts of The Marvels had completely left my mind.

During the second half of 2023, Disney+ could have slotted Loki anywhere between the season finale of Secret Invasion on July 26th and New Year’s Eve.

Sometimes the button sticks in Loki Season Two, Episode SixSometimes the button sticks in Loki Season Two, Episode Six

I mean literally anywhere. We’re talking about more than 150 dates on the calendar.

Why in the world would Marvel and Disney+ choose the day when The Marvels enters theaters? It’s just bad business.

Even worse, this action becomes the latest demonstration that Marvel leadership appears asleep at the wheel.

That’s a problem that’s growing harder and harder to overlook.

Summary

  • Superman: Legacy may be setting up the upcoming movie featuring The Authority, with María Gabriela De Faría cast as Angela Spica aka The Engineer.
  • Superman: Legacy could explore the origin stories of The Engineer and other members of The Authority, introducing new heroes to the established DC Universe.
  • Lex Luthor is rumored to appear as a villain in Superman: Legacy, and the inclusion of The Authority may bring fresh perspectives to the DC Universe.

Superman: Legacy adds a new DC Universe villain who may be setting up another major Chapter 1 “Gods and Monsters” movie. Since the SAG-AFTRA strike ended this month, Hollywood productions are able to resume filming and casting, including James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe. The DC Studios co-CEO is getting ready for his first DC Universe movie, which will be Superman: Legacy, featuring David Corenswet as the big screen’s latest Man of Steel.

Deadline reports that María Gabriela De Faría has landed the role of Angela Spica aka The Engineer as part of the Superman: Legacy cast. However, The Engineer is tied to The Authority, who are rumored to appear in the movie ahead of their own solo movie on the DC Universe slate. De Faría’s body of work includes The Excorism of God, as well as the TV shows Deadly Class, The Moodys, and Animal Control.

RELATED: Everything We Know About Superman: Legacy

How Superman: Legacy Sets Up The Authority Movie

Ever since the Superman: Legacy casting process began, it has been reported that at least a few members of The Authority will be featured in some capacity. For the time being, DC Studios hasn’t made it clear one way or another if they are actually planning to feature The Authority. However, with De Faría’s casting, Superman: Legacy could be gearing up to actually set up The Authority movie that is in the works.

Superman: Legacy could explore perhaps the origin story of The Engineer and any other member of The Authority that may get added. Despite the fact that Gunn has stated that this DC Universe will already have a lot of superheroes established, there are bound to be some heroes who are just getting started, similar to Corenswet’s Clark Kent. Since there is another character who uses the name The Engineer, perhaps Superman: Legacy could plant the seed for how Angela takes over that mantle.

While it has yet to be confirmed, Lex Luthor is rumored to be in Superman: Legacy as a villain.

With The Authority being relatively new to the mainstream audience, it will be interesting to see how the general DC Universe crowd responds to those characters. Hopefully, as they have at least one member of The Authority cast, this will get more movement on the solo movie too. As Superman: Legacy is gearing up to start production in March 2024, more casting news is likely set to come out in the coming weeks and months.

If you’re a Pokemon GO player who logs into the app using their Pokemon Trainer Club credentials, it is of utmost importance that you immediately check your username and password and keep them in a safe location. From tomorrow November 15th, 2023, Niantic will be implementing a forced logout for every single player who logs in using their Pokemon Trainer Club credentials.

The username that you chose when you created your Pokemon Trainer Club account may differ from the in-game name that you selected for Pokemon GO itself. So do not assume these details will match your Pokemon GO details! If you’ve been logged in, and not had to use these credentials for quite some time, you may have forgotten them. If that is the case, you can recover your account information here. Making sure that you know your details in advance and recovering them if you do not will allow you to continue to play Pokemon GO seamlessly without issue.

The forced logout is because Niantic is updating how people log in with Pokemon Trainer Club accounts. After it has been updated, trainers will still login using the same method used previously. The only difference is that there will be a new and updated login screen. To go alongside this change, Niantic rewards players who log in with these credentials after the update with a so-far unspecified item reward.

It seems that Niantic is attempting to secure Pokemon GO accounts, and this update to Pokemon Trainer Club is a step in that direction. With a reward for linking a Pokemon Trainer Club account to your Pokemon GO account, it feels as if, going forward, this will be Niantic’s preferred method of logging into the game.

SPOILER ALERT! This post contains details from Wednesday’s episode of The Masked Singer, including the identity of Cuddle Monster.

The only times Cuddle Monster sings are in the shower and on The Masked Singer stage.

“I’m not a great singer. So I really had a good time getting some tips so I can carry some notes because… I wanted to at least have some fun,” the NBA champ told Deadline, explaining he was instructed to sing from his gut and scrunching his nose to reach certain notes. “When I got the tips, I was like, ‘Oh, this is cool. I can actually perform a little bit better than I would have without [them].’ So from that perspective, it was fun.”

If you’ve read this far then you’re probably ready to know that Cuddle Monster is none other than Metta World Peace.

The former basketball player, who notched 19 seasons for six NBA teams including the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks, became interested in the show after he saw another basketball legend compete.

“I saw Dwight Howard on it [in Season 6]. That was kind of the first time I was introduced to it,” he said.

This isn’t World Peace’s first foray into reality competition series. He’s taken the ballroom floor on Dancing With The Stars, traversed the jungle in Beyond the Edge, played mind games in the Celebrity Big Brother house, and even pretended to sing in Lip Sync Battle. Still, the nerves set in a but when he stepped on stage for The Masked Singer, “mainly because I’m not doing reality shows anymore.”

For World Peace, the show was a chance to “give it one more shot and then call it a career.”

While his time on The Masked Singer was short-lived, he certainly made an impression with his massive, adorable, pink and, well, cuddly costume — which was somehow both his favorite and most challenging part of competing.

“I had to get some massages on my back. It was really heavy,” he explained. “But other than that, it was a fun experience.”

As his name would suggest, World Peace was also just really excited about being able to get the audience going and spread positivity with his renditions of “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” by New Kids On The Block and “Can’t Stop The Feeling” by Justin Timberlake.

“That’s something I always kind of wanted to do,” he said.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

The Hideous Sun Demon is a 1958 American science fiction horror film written, produced and directed by actor Robert Clarke.

In his 1996 autobiography To ‘B’ or Not to ‘B‘ (co-written by Tom Weaver), Clarke revealed that he made the movie for less than $50,000, including $500 for the rubberised lizard suit he wore. He shot the movie over twelve weekends to get two days’ use of rental camera equipment for one day’s fee.

The movie was featured in the 1982 satire It Came from Hollywood and with Clarke’s permission was re-dubbed as the 1983 comedy Revenge of the Sun Demon aka What’s Up, Hideous Sun Demon featuring the voice of Jay Leno and new scenes starring veteran voice actor Cam Clarke reprising his father’s role with the nuclear accident origin turned into a mishap with an experimental sun tan lotion.

An A4 book, Scripts from the Crypt: ‘The Hideous Sun Demon by Tom Weaver, was published in 2011.

Plot:
When research scientist Doctor Gilbert McKenna falls unconscious after accidentally being exposed to radiation during an experiment with a new radioactive isotope, he is rushed to a nearby hospital. Attending physician Doctor Stern is surprised to find that Gil shows no signs of burns typical to a five-minute exposure to radiation and informs Gil’s co-workers, lab assistant Ann Lansing and scientist Doctor Buckell, that he will keep the patient for several days of observation.

Meanwhile, Gil is taken to the solarium to receive the sun’s healing rays, but while he naps, the sun’s rays metamorphose Gil into a scaled creature, horrifying the other patients. Seeing his own skin, Gil flees to the bathroom to confront his new appearance.

Later, Stern explains Gil’s affliction to Lansing and Buckell: Humans have evolved from a chain of living beings beginning with one-celled organisms that progressed into fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and finally humans. Stern assumes that the radiation poisoning has caused a reversal of evolution changing Gil into a prehistoric amphibian and that the catalyst for the regression is sunlight.

Reviews:
“ …Hideous is a Z-er with good intentions and some solid results; the makeup on the demon is quite effective, meant to resemble a lizard, but coming out more bedrock than bedeviled. But it works and the seams don’t show, which is a micro-miracle unto itself.” Daily Dead

“Another classic 1950s monster movie with Robert Clarke as a scientist who becomes a lizard when exposed to the rays of the sun. Ultra-cheap, with a highlighted scene of Clarke transforming while fighting a man outdoors as a blonde woman from an apartment building above looks in the sky and acts terrified.” DVD Drive-In

“Unfortunately, the cut-rate production values make the Sun Demon a poor cousin to his cinematic antecedents. To make matters worse, the film spends far too much of its short 74 minute runtime on dull scientific exposition and clunky dialog, while showing the hideous monster only sparingly until the denouement.” Films from Beyond the Time Barrier

“The Hideous Sun Demon is a lot of fun; it’s campy, sexy, and is probably best enjoyed with a few adult beverages on hand – yet the film has an interesting subtext that makes it almost (if not quite) on a par with similar sci-fi classics from its era, like Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Creature from the Black Lagoon.” Libertas Film Magazine

“Wordy dialogue, poor acting, uneven photography and substandard sound all add to the disadvantage of a hopelessly illogical plot.” Monthly Film Bulletin

“The Hideous Sun Demon is usually spoken of in dismissive terms but is a film that has some undeniable promise, even if never fully transcending the B-budget ghetto. The makeup on the transformed Clarke looks effective and for once does not belie the ‘hideous’ promise of the title. The script though seems to have little clue what evolution is.” Moria

“Some might laugh at this film, and perhaps it deserves a little for its cheap production values and whatnot, but at the end of the day it is a solid little science-fiction film that never fails to entertain.” The Telltale Mind

” …has the benefit of a pretty convincing monster and a solid performance by Clarke, but little else. Despite showing the creature rather early, Clarke doesn’t turn the beast loose into much later in the picture. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be such a bad thing, but most of the scenes that take place in between the monster’s appearances play like a grade Z soap opera.” The Video Vacuum

Pedro Pascal

Can we start this with a question, one intended with no disrespect to Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, or, god help us, Ioan Gruffudd, Miles Teller, or poor, cameo-trapped John Krasinski?

Do any of us actually give a shit who plays Mr. Fantastic?

We’re just saying: The amount of speculation that has now been spilled about the casting fate of the character you got stuck playing as on the playground after the rock man, the fire guy, and the woman who can make forcefields explode in your brain were already picked has gotten at least mildly unfathomable at this point. Now self-appointed “cool slutty daddy”—his words! Don’t yell at us!—Pedro Pascal has been sucked into the rumor mill, too, with Deadline reporting that the Last Of Us star and genre stalwart is supposedly in talks with Marvel for taking a shot at the role of stretchy super-scientist Reed Richards.

If true, that’s mostly interesting for what it says about where Marvel intends to take the Fantastic Four movie, which is currently scheduled for May 2, 2025. Pascal is, after all, 48 at the moment, and would be 50 when the movie comes out—so at the very least it suggests that the movie won’t be a straight origin story pegged to the quartet’s younger years. (Which, fair enough: We’ve already got two of those, neither great, so the idea has probably run its course.) Deadline quotes a bunch of anonymous sources that say “scheduling is still being worked out”—Pascal’s crazy-busy right now, between The Last Of Us, Gladiator 2, and more—but that negotiations are “headed in the right direction.” And, hey, the internet seems to like it well enough (which, we suspect is at least half the reason stories like this leak, as a sort of free, informal dose of focus testing), even if a lot of people are suggesting Pascal might be better in an antagonist role as Doctor Doom. In any case, Pascal’s an interesting-enough actor that he’d find something fun to do with the part, which, you could argue, has never really been nailed on film. So, yeah: Put it on the vision board, “Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic.” We’ve seen worse.

More Futurama is headed to Hulu. The streamer has ordered two additional seasons of the quirky sci-fi series, each consisting of 10 episodes.

That’s on top of the 20 Futurama episodes Hulu ordered last year, half of which debuted as part of the reboot’s 11th season in July. The streamer says it will drop the remaining 10 episodes with a season 12 that’s expected to arrive in 2024.

Hulu doesn’t say when seasons 13 and 14 will premiere on the platform, but at least now we know that we can expect a total of 30 new Futurama episodes to hit Hulu in the near future. Hulu first picked up Futurama after the show ended on Comedy Central in 2013, bringing back most of the original cast, including Billy West as Fry, John DiMaggio as Blender, and Katey Sagal as Leela. Futurama creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen also returned as executive producers.

The 11th season once again follows the love story between Fry and Leela, while also digging into the “mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box” and the “secret history of evil Robot Santa,” according to the show’s official synopsis. With two extra seasons, there should be plenty more adventures for the Planet Express crew to embark on.

The third “Fantastic Four” reboot might have its leading star: Pedro Pascal is circling the lead role of Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, in the new movie. Deadline first reported the news. IndieWire has reached out to Pascal’s representatives and those for Marvel Studios for comment.

The next “Fantastic Four” will be directed by “WandaVision” helmer Matt Shakman with a script from Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. The film is currently set for a May 2, 2025 release date from Disney, marking the first MCU-proper introduction of these characters. No other “Fantastic Four” casting has been announced yet.

In addition to his possible MCU debut with “Fantastic Four,” Pascal is set to star in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2” opposite Paul Mescal, the next season of “The Mandalorian,” and “The Last of Us” Season 2, which is anticipated for a 2025 release.

Pascal appeared in Pedro Almodóvar’s queer Western “Strange Way of Life” with Ethan Hawke, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival.

“He really is an actor. He can do comedy and drama. He can do musicals and classical theatre,” Almodóvar said of Pascal’s talent and career. “I feel like people are pigeonholing him. One of my hopes is that, after people see ‘Strange Way of Life,’ a light bulb might go off in people’s heads and they’ll say, ‘He can do more than what we’re employing him to do.’ Not only epic roles! I don’t have anything against epic roles, but he is more well-rounded as an actor than that.”

John Krasinski starred as a multiverse version of Mr. Fantastic in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in 2022, causing fans to speculate he will be leading the standalone reboot franchise installment. However, that’s not so in this multiverse.

Also speaking of what could have been, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” director Jon Watts stepped away from the “Fantastic Four” project earlier this year to helm “Star Wars” Disney+ series “Skeleton Crew” with Jude Law.

The new “Fantastic Four” movie was announced in 2020 after Disney acquired the characters through its acquisition of 20th Century Fox. The first “Fantastic Four” film was released in 2005, followed by 2007 sequel “The Silver Surfer.” The franchise was rebooted with 2015’s “Fantastic Four,” which was critically panned.

“‘Fantastic Four’ is the foundation for everything that came after in the comics,” MCU head Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly. “There’s certainly been versions of it [onscreen], but never inhabiting the storytelling of the MCU. And that’s something that is really exciting for us. People will start to hear more about that soon. We plan on that being a big pillar of the MCU going forward, just the way they’ve been in the comics for 50 or 60 years.”

“Fantastic Four” is part of Marvel’s Phase 6, along with two new “Avengers” films, “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” with the respective release dates being pushed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” director Destin Daniel Cretton is no longer directing “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” as announced on November 15.

She calls the perfumery’s 724 a “power perfume,” describing the eau de parfum as commanding, with notes of sweat pea and mock oranges, enveloped in cozy sandalwood-white-musk accord. The perfume is one of many packaged into this unique cube-shaped calendar, which also features the maison’s signature Baccarat Rouge and Oud scents, as well as its Sparkling Body Oil, Mon Beau Sapin Candle, scented laundry detergent, and more. Blow Up My Life, written and directed by Abigail Horton and Ryan Dickie, follows Jason (Jason Selvig), a hotshot coder at a big tech company. After a bender ends with a TikTok video of him snorting cocaine, he is summarily fired. Gary (Davram Stiefler), who is higher up in the company, knows how talented Jason is but can’t change what happened.

Now, Jason runs a computer repair business and only has social contact with his friend, Charlie (Kara Young). But after a serendipitous house call to his former boss’ place, Jason uncovers corruption involving the app he was working on before being fired. Jason takes this newfound evidence to his reporter ex-girlfriend, Priya (Reema Sampat). This act of wanting to do the right thing puts Jason, Priya, Charlie, and Gary in grave danger.

“…Jason uncovers corruption involving the app he was working on before being fired.”

Blow Up My Life capably balances the situation’s inherent thrills with its lead’s goofy antics. He narrates what’s happening in a 1940s gumshoe style, much to Charlie’s amusement. There are some laughs to be had as Jason struggles to find the correct phrase to describe the trouble he’s in. Dickie’s cinematography maintains an ominous feel, as does the lighting. This allows the dual genres to live side by side in harmony. Plus, the ending absolutely reinforces that this is a thriller with a capital T.

Selvig is excellent as Jason. He’s charming and funny and sells the danger each twist and turn brings. Young is fantastic as the elusive but well-meaning best friend. Stiefler is believable as the man who may or may not know more than he lets on. Ben Horner plays the C.E.O. and is appropriately vile.

With Blow Up My Life Horton and Dickie mash comedy and thriller together for solid results. The cast all understand their roles and play into each genre believably. The ending is intense and furthers the danger these characters are in.

Community safety is the focus of a new branch of Lethbridge crime fighters.

A six-member Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit has been operating since Nov. 6.

The specialized sheriffs work in tandem with the Lethbridge Police Service to investigate and shut down illegal activity at problem properties.

Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis said the SCAN unit in Calgary has been successful in dealing with illegal drug activity over the past four years.

“Between 2019 and 2023, the SCAN unit in Calgary investigated 363 properties in Lethbridge, which is about 20 per cent of its case load during that period,” Ellis said.

“In addition, there has been a significant increase in complaints from Medicine Hat and other Southern Alberta communities, emphasizing the need for increased law enforcement efforts in the region.”

Along with covering Lethbridge, the unit will also monitor the area from Vulcan to the Crowsnest Pass, down to the U.S. border and east to the provincial boundary with Saskatchewan.

Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen said having a SCAN unit dedicated to the city is a gamechanger.

“Quicker response times, much higher investigative intelligence, and make no mistake, drug houses and drug dealers are not welcome in Lethbridge,” Hyggen said.

LPS deputy chief Gerald Grobmeie said the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act is a powerful tool in dealing with these properties.

“The sanctions and court orders used by SCAN directly hold property owners accountable, stop illegal activity, remove criminals and prevent new ones from moving in is critical to community safety and security,” Grobmeie said.

It’s not always easy to find out

Much of the buzz around Bradley Cooper‘s “Maestro” so far has revolved around his shocking physical transformation into famed conductor Leonard Bernstein, but the actor-director-writer’s prep for the role might also blow some people away. Speaking at a recent Los Angeles screening for the film in a conversation moderated by “Hamilton” Tony-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, Cooper revealed that he spent a whopping six years learning how to conduct just over six minutes of music in the style of Bernstein himself so he could record a crucial scene in “Maestro” live on set.

The scene in question recreates Bernstein’s famous conducting of the London Symphony Orchestra at the Ely Cathedral in 1976. The sequence is the film’s most rousing, as it fully showcases Bernstein’s musical genius and shows off Cooper’s staggering performance in all its full-bodied glory.

“That scene I was so worried about because we did it live,” Cooper said at the event (via IndieWire). “That was the London Symphony Orchestra. I was recorded live. I had to conduct them. And I spent six years learning how to conduct six minutes and 21 seconds of music.”

“I was able to get the raw take where I just watched Leonard Bernstein [conduct] at Ely Cathedral with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1976. And so I had that to study,” Cooper added, while also thanking “wonderful teachers” such as Metropolitan Opera director Yannick Nézet-Séguin for helping him fine-tune the performance.

“Nézet-Séguin made videos with all the tempo changes, so I had all of the materials to just work on.” Cooper said. “It was really about dialing exactly what I wanted cinematically and then inviting them into then inhabit that space and trusting that they have all done the work. Because I think that I knew I was terrified, absolutely terrified that if I hadn’t done the work then I wouldn’t be able to enjoy myself in these scenes. And everybody did.”

“Maestro” frames Bernstein’s professional career around his marriage to Felicia Montealegre, played by Carey Mulligan. Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke and Sarah Silverman also star. Mulligan recently told Variety that it was Cooper’s style that made her feel like a “proper actor” for the first time on a film set.

“There was a part of me as an actor that always felt like, ‘Well, I’m never going to be one of those actors that keeps their dialect in between takes,’” Mulligan said. “There was a part of me that was slightly held back, or maybe nervous of completely committing to something. But that was what Bradley asked, basically, at the beginning of the process. He was like, ‘If you’re going to do this, you just have to fully, fully do it.’”

“When he said that, I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to absolutely do it all.’ I’m going to do all the research. I’m going to do all the dialect stuff. I’m going to do everything, so that when I get on set, I am 100% able to just feel like I’m onstage and have that sense of ‘I don’t remember what happened.’”

“Maestro” opens in select theaters on Nov. 22 and will be available to stream globally on Netflix starting Dec. 20.

Billie Eilish analyzed her songs and reflected on her career while putting her knowledge to the test during Variety‘s “Know Their Lyrics” presented by Lifetime.

Quizzing the singer on some of her most iconic lyrics the first cut was from her 2021 track “Getting Older.” Reading from a card (without musical context clues) the singer repeated, “Things I once enjoyed just keep me employed now / Things I’m longing for someday I’ll be bored of.” She immediately recognized the opening number to her sophomore album “Happier Than Ever” and commented, “good choice.”

“I think about this line a lot in my life,” Eilish said. “This line bums me out so bad. Anytime I’m excited about something or really feeling any kind of excitement, I always think about this line. It’s in my head, ‘Things you’re longing for, you’ll be bored of.’ And not necessary bored of, everything we long for and crave and are excited for one day [we will be] bored of or used to or it will be over… But it’s also what’s so fun about life is that we change and we keep changing, and then we keep getting excited about the next thing … We should embrace that, but it’s also a huge bummer.”

Eilish was then presented with the lyrics, “When did it end? All the enjoyment” from the song she co-wrote for the blockbuster film “Barbie” titled, “What Was I Made For?” To the singer, that lyric wraps up the entire sentiment behind the songm, “it’s a question that everyone has, or can, ask themselves.”

“I’ve spent my life loving girls and being really worried that they hate me, for some reason, and wanting to impress them.” Thus, for Eilish, seeing how many women resonated with the lyrics was the most rewarding part of creating the song: “I felt like one with the girls.”

Next, Eilish recounted her experiences working on “Lo Vas a Olvidar” with Rosalía and “Everything I Wanted” with her brother Finneas O’Connell. When presented with lyrics from “Bad Guy,” she reflected on the 2019 Grammys where she took home six awards, scoring both song and record of the year for “Bad Guy.” “I think very fondly of that night,” she said.

Eilish delved into her “Survivor” obsession when presented with the lyrics “I put on ‘Survivor’ just to watch somebody suffer / Maybe I should get some sleep” from “TV.” “I kinda wanna go on it,” she admitted. “I think that the physical stuff, I’d be great at. But you have to do math and shit, and I would not be good at.”

To close out the knowledge test, Eilish was given the lyrics, “I’ve never fallen from quite this high” from her debut single “Ocean Eyes.” She recalled sitting in a Starbucks when she got a call from her brother that “Ocean Eyes” hit 1,000 plays. “Nothing like this is ever gonna happen again, and this is my moment, and I’m gonna just take it in, and I’m so grateful for this, it’s so cool,” she remembered thinking. “Then, the next week it was on the radio, and then, here we are.”

“If it weren’t for that song, I don’t think I would be sitting here at all,” Eilish said. Watch the full breakdown above.

Just after costars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Matt LeBlanc took to Instagram to post special memories of the late Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow shared their own bittersweet farewells.

Schwimmer chose to commemorate 10 years of Ross and Chandler, posting a picture of the two of them from an ’80s flashback episode and writing, “This photo is from one of my favorite moments with you. Now it makes me smile and grieve at the same time. I imagine you up there, somewhere, in the same white suit, hands in your pockets, looking around—‘Could there BE any more clouds?’”

“I will never forget your impeccable comic timing and delivery. You could take a straight line of dialogue and bend it to your will, resulting in something so entirely original and unexpectedly funny it still astonishes,” he added. “And you had heart. Which you were generous with, and shared with us, so we could create a family out of six strangers.”

NBC/Getty Images

After Perry’s passing, many Friends fans recirculated the actor’s description of Schwimmer’s generosity at the beginning of the show; as the “breakout” star, he could have used his position to get more money than the rest of the cast, but he instead suggested that they bargain as a unit for equal pay.

Kudrow shared an old Polaroid picture of herself and Perry from some daytime event (possibly the Upfronts?) and recounted various memories of the late actor, writing in gratitude, “Shot the pilot, Friends Like Us, got picked up then immediately, we were at the NBC Upfronts. Then…You suggested we play poker AND made it so much fun while we initially bonded. Thank you for that. Thank you for making me laugh so hard at something you said, that my muscles ached, and tears poured down my face EVERY DAY…Thank you for showing up at work when you weren’t well and then, being completely brilliant….Thank you for the best 10 years a person gets to have….Thank you for all I learned about GRACE and LOVE through knowing you…Thank you for the time I got to have with you, Matthew.”

Originally released in France in 1970, and now available in a new restoration, “The Strangler” is a strange, seductive film that takes the conventions of the serial-killer thriller and explodes them with baroque colors and convulsive camera movements. It’s like “Peeping Tom” meets one of Dario Argento’s giallo joints, but slathered in a coat of melancholic malaise.

The titular lady-killer isn’t frantic and blood-starved; he’s a baby-faced young man, Émile (Jacques Perrin), who takes to the streets of Paris on the lookout for women he perceives as lonely and suicidal. For the most part, these women indeed meet Émile, their agent of mercy, halfway — a process the director, Paul Vecchiali, depicts as an eerie, enigmatic dance of death and desire.

Born in 1930, Vecchiali belonged to the same generation as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. Despite beginning his filmmaking career in the early ’60s, he was never associated with the “nouvelle vague” crowd. He came to prominence later in life, with the critical success of “The Strangler” playing a substantial role in his rise. With Diagonale, the production company he founded in 1976, he gained a reputation for transgressive themes and experimental methods — and up until his death in January of this year, he continued to work on the margins of the French film industry.

Using a white knitted scarf as his weapon of choice, Émile stalks new victims as three individuals separately stay on his tail, each with a different pursuit: Simon, a burly detective (Julien Guiomar); a thief (Paul Barge) who swipes cash and jewelry from each corpse; and a woman, Anna (Eva Simonet), who seems to want to be a future victim.

Contrary to what you might expect from such a lurid nightmare scenario, “The Strangler” is quite unlike the exploitative slasher fare from which it draws inspiration. The killer loses his will to kill; the investigators, their desire to solve the crimes. Vecchiali makes poetic — and tragic — what the true-crime junkie must experience after bingeing one too many episodes: the emptiness of all those pretty corpses.

Want to watch Gwyneth Paltrow be found Gwynecent again?

Paltrow’s legal battle with the skiing optometrist had it all: chic court attire worn by an Oscar winner (many pieces could be found via Goop online), teary testimony filled with angst and heartbreak, an oddball attorney, a “symbolic” $1 in damages and a grueling cross-examination regarding Taylor Swift.

The only things the trial lacked were show tunes and a glowing marquee, and Awkward Productions is fixing that.

“Gwyneth Goes Skiing” will make its West End debut in London in December. “She’s the Goop-founding, Door-Sliding, Shakespeare-In-Loving, consciously-uncoupling Hollywood superstar. He’s a retired Optometrist from Utah. In 2016, they went skiing,” the show description reads. “On the slopes of Deer Valley, their worlds collided, and so did they — literally. … This is their story. Kind of. Not really. But also, it’s at Christmas.”

Linus Karp will star as defendant Paltrow, while plaintiff Terry Sanderson will be portrayed by Joseph Martin. The production also features original musical by singer-songwriter Leland (“RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “Love, Victor”).

“Gwyneth Goes Skiing” is based on the court trial between Paltrow and Sanderson that dominated headlines earlier this year. It may have been spring 2023’s most meme-able event.

Sanderson, who sued Paltrow, accused the Goop founder of negligence, alleging she slammed into his back on the slopes of Utah’s Deer Valley Resort, leaving him with broken ribs and brain injuries. His attorneys called on medical experts, relatives and friends, all of whom painted a picture of a man whose health and quality of life had deteriorated since the crash.

Paltrow’s attorneys countered by saying Sanderson struck the Oscar-winning actor. Paltrow testified, “Mr. Sanderson categorically hit me on that ski slope.” The defense also presented medical evidence in asserting that the 76-year-old man was simply succumbing to natural aging and health conditions that existed before the crash.

Jurors were left to decide which story to believe and to determine whether Paltrow acted negligently during the collision. The lawsuit, filed in 2019, originally asked for a $3-million payout but ultimately sought around $300,000 in damages. Paltrow countersued for $1 and attorneys’ fees.

The brief deliberation lasted about 2½ hours, and the verdict: Gwynecent.

According to Awkward Productions — the self-described “harbingers of queer chaos” — the audience will be the jury for this unlikely Christmas production. London’s Pleasance Theatre will transform into the Deer Valley ski resort for a 10-day run beginning Dec. 13.

After a long search, Marvel Studios is nearing a deal with Pedro Pascal in one of its biggest upcoming MCU movies.

Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four, is finally coming to the MCU. This time, it will be helmed by WandaVision director Matt Shakman and is currently set to release on May 2, 2025.

After years of speculation of who will play the four team members, a new report now teases the first domino that’s expected to fall in cast one of the MCU’s biggest upcoming projects.

Pedro Pascal In Talks for Mr. Fantastic

HBO

According to Deadline, Pedro Pascal has been offered the role of Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.

The outlet reports that a deal isn’t signed yet but both sides are heading in the right direction. Pascal has a busy schedule in the months ahead, gearing up to be in Gladiator 2 and The Last of Us Season 2.

The Hollywood Reporter added that Pascal’s schedule is a factor in whether or not he will join the MCU and reportedly “the current status of the talks is unclear.”

A bearded look at Reed Richards.
Marvel Comics

Pedro Pascal previously expressed his excitement for a traditional Marvel role, stating that he would embrace the superhero genre, including wearing a cape and CGI.

Should this news be true, bringing Pedro Pascal into MCU for one of its most prominent roles, it’s likely that casting news for Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (The Thing) will soon follow.

Is Pedro Pascal the Right Choice for Reed Richards?

Pedro Pascal has had a massive resurgence in his career over the past few years, in many ways beginning with The Mandalorian as Din Djarin and then portraying Joel in The Last of Us HBO series.

He was even nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the Emmy Awards for his performance in The Last of Us Season 1.

Considering his soaring popularity and interest from directors, producers, and executives, his schedule is busy and may hold him back from joining the MCU, which is a massive commitment. However, he’s also been teased to have a reduced role in The Last of Us Season 2, which could help on that front.

His ties to Disney as one of its streaming service’s biggest stars (despite his face not being shown during The Mandalorian Season 3) could play a role in Marvel’s interest.

As an actor, Pascal is a great choice to lead the Fantastic Four and play a significant role within the MCU. He’s a charismatic actor with range that could give a layered performance as Reed, a superpowered man with incredible intellect.

Pascal is currently 48 years old, which makes him an older investment for Marvel Studios, but the character isn’t known for his adolescence. Many fans may love the idea of an older and wiser Mr. Fantastic following the 2015 Fant4stic disaster.

Marvel Studios knows the pressure of perfectly casting the Fantastic Four following acquiring the team’s rights in 2019 and Pascal as the leader could prove to be a smart move in the right direction.

Fantastic Four is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.

Review: Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #2
[Editor’s Note: This review may contain spoilers]

Writer: Robert Venditti
Art: Riley Rossmo
Colors: Ivan Plascencia
Letters: Tom Napolitano

Reviewed by: Matthew B. Lloyd

Summary

Wesley Dodds begins the search for who burnt his house down.  In the process, he discovers the plans for the deadly gasses he inadvertently created are missing from his lab….

Positives

The look of this book is dead on.  It’s an effective blend between the Sandman’s early Golden Age adventures and Sandman Mystery Theater.  It’s got some of the darker edge of the latter with the straightforward look of the former.  It’s clear Rossmo is looking at fashions from the early 40’s and late ’30’s with Wesley’s double breasted suit and Dian’s cloche hat.  Rossmo’s storytelling, like last issue is very effective.  He puts together sequences as well as more poster style pages for dramatic impact.  The title of the issue, “Smoke and Mirrors” is again presented like gas or smoke, a theme carried over from Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #1.  This homage to Will Eisner’s splash pages on The Spirit helps set the tone and capture the flavor of the era.  There were a number of slouched hat and over-coated characters back then and the Sandman was DC’s character in that genre.

The script for Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #2 by Robert Venditti features a number of compelling aspects.  Venditti continues to use the relationship between Wesley and Dian Belmont well.  It not only functions as character moments, but it’s part of the plot.  Dian has helped Wesley from the very beginning of the series back in the Golden Age and it’s a different dynamic from most comic book love interests of the time.  There’s a permanence to their relationship, much like Carter Hall and Shiera Sanders.  It’s very different from the Superman/ Lois dynamic in the Golden Age.  The Shadow had Margo Lane, but there was always a bit of distance in that pairing.  Wesley and Dian are closer, and with the perspective of history, we know that to be true.

Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #2 ends with something of a surprise that Wesley’s nightmares predict.  Having kept the deadly gas formulas, he will blame himself for allowing them to be used by the thief.  It’s a compelling piece of the puzzle.  Venditti hasn’t tipped his hand on the identity of the villain, yet.  However, there are a few candidates that have been introduced in the first couple issues.  This leaves the reader with a good old fashioned mystery.

Negatives

The only negative here is that this is a mini-series.  It’s clear early on that this series could easily be expanded into an ongoing.

Verdict

Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #2 is even better than the premier issue.  The plot moves forward, the mystery deepens and the characterization is effective as Venditti and Rossmo recapitulate the world of the early days of the Sandman.  There’s nothing Earth shattering about this series, it’s just THIS type of story done really, really well.  It should come as no surprise with Venditti’s track record on Hawkman.  It’s a classic noir detective story in the 1940’s at the birth of the mystery men of the DC Universe.  Plus, it seamlessly incorporates a consistent characterization and tone.  Damn near perfect!

193 Review: Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #2[Editor’s Note: This

The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) has opened applications for its second annual Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis Music Maker Grant, presented by ASCAP.

Last year’s grant recipient was up-and-coming songwriter and artist Mondaii, who is based in Atlanta. Mondaii said of the grant’s impact, “The music maker grant and the $5000 funding helped to kick start my career. With the money, I was able to fund the mixing for my latest single ‘Back N Forth.’”

Emerging Black music producers and songwriters from the United States are eligible to apply for the second iteration of the grant. In addition to money, the winner receives studio time and mentorship from BMAC Board and Executive Leadership in addition to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who comprise the acclaimed songwriting and production duo known as Jam and Lewis.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 30; the application and more information can be found here.

The 2024 recipient will be revealed in December at an event presented by BMAC and Jam and Lewis; ASCAP will host. BMAC leadership will join Jam and Lewis in presenting the honor to the winner.

Willie “Prophet” Stiggers, CEO and president of BMAC said, “Black Music Action Coalition is committed to ensuring the next generation of leaders in our industry are equipped with the knowledge, resources and access that our community deserves and does not always receive.”

He continued, “We see the impact made when we truly invest in our future.  Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are two of the greatest producers, songwriters and human beings in this industry, so having them as mentors to a young person is invaluable. When you add the network that the BMAC Board & our Executive Leadership Council and ASCAP will provide, this is really an incredible opportunity.”

Pedro Pascal is a Mandalorian, he’s a survivor of the zombie apocalypse, and it looks like he’s about to become a cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Star Wars and Last of Us star is reportedly Marvel’s top pick to anchor the new cast of the studio’s relaunched Fantastic Four franchise, playing Reed Richards — AKA the stretchy scientist known as Mr. Fantastic.

That’s according to Deadline, who says “while a deal is far from done,” Pascal is “in talks to play the leader of the iconic superhero team.”

READ MORE: I Ate Everything on Denny’s Fantastic Four Theme Menu

They caution that “that scheduling is still being worked out,” but that negotiations are “headed in the right direction for Pascal to do this and his other future projects.”

Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie, which will be directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman, will be the fifth made of the iconic comic series. The first, produced by exploitation director Roger Corman in 1994, was never officially released. The next two came in 2005 and 2007, were distributed by 20th Century Fox, and featured an FF comprised of Ioan Gruffudd as Reed, Jessica Alba as Sue, Michael Chiklis as Ben, and future Captain America Chris Evans as Johnny Storm. In 2015, Fox made a notoriously bad reboot loosely based on the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics about a younger version of the team. This time, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell played the Fantastic Four, with Toby Kebbell as a barely recognizable version of Doctor Doom.

Reed Richards has already appeared once in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; an alternate version of the character appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when Dr. Strange traveled to a different part of the multiverse with different versions of familiar Marvel heroes. There, the character was played by John Krasinski, who had long been tipped by Fantastic Four fans as one of their top picks for the role. But Pascal, who is so good on The Mandalorian and The Last of Us would be an outstanding pick for Reed Richards. Let’s hope it all works out.

Marvel’s Fantastic Four is currently scheduled for release on May 2, 2025. It is expected to kick off Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans of the 2000s medical dramedy House will be happy to know that the series has found a new streaming home with Hulu. Starring Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House, the series follows the titular character as he deals with his addiction to pain meds while leading a team of doctors with his brilliant mind. In short, if Sherlock Holmes was a medical doctor he would be Gregory House.

Created by David Shore, the series originally ran for eight seasons on Fox from November 16, 2004, to May 21, 2012. Laurie was joined by an ensemble cast that included Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer, Kal Penn, Peter Jacobson, Amber Tamblyn, Odette Annable, Charlyne Yi, and Olivia Wilde during its run.

During its run, House was met with acclaim from audiences and critics, with a trophy case full of awards: five Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, a Peabody Award, three NAACP Image Awards, nine People Choice Awards, and numerous others.

All 177 episodes will be available to stream on Hulu later this week. You can also find the entire series available to stream on Prime Video.

Recently, it was reported that Disney will buy out Comcast’s stake in Hulu later this year. Adding House to the platform is another example of Hulu expanding its already massive library of content. The medical drama joins Bob’s Burgers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Family Guy, Grey’s Anatomy, The Masked Singer, This Is Us, Rick & Morty, 30 Rock, and more as series that are available to stream past seasons on demand. It was also reported that Hulu has renewed Futurama for two more seasons.

Right now is the best time to sign up for Hulu if you want to save big during the holiday season. For a limited time, new subscribers can get one year of the Hulu (Ad-supported) plan for only $79.999 (a savings of 16%). And on top of that, you can try it for free for one month.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Loki” Season 2 finale.

By the end of “Loki” Season 2, the God of Mischief has mastered his timeslipping abilities and transformed into the God of Stories, sitting at the center of Yggdrasil, the World Tree of Norse mythology that gives structure to the universe and supports the 9 realms of existence.

During the finale, viewers watch as the Marvel-villian-turned-antihero spends centuries using his newfound power to try to change the outcome of the Temporal Loom exploding. Given the fact that this ability theoretically allows the Asgardian to revisit any point in time, it begs the question, would he try to change his shocking death in the 2018 film “Avengers: Infinity War”?

“My instinctive response is he would be tempted, but he would choose not to go back there and change the outcome,” actor Tom Hiddleston told TheWrap. “[Loki has] arrived at where he is because of the journey he’s taken to get there and that moment is a huge part of the journey. If that hadn’t happened, then he wouldn’t have learned the lessons he learns in the time theater in Season 1, and therefore he wouldn’t have been set on this path. So I think he would have been tempted to look, but ultimately would have understood that he’s so grateful for where he is and wouldn’t change any of the steps that it takes him to get there.”

“Or maybe he would, I don’t know, Loki is not me. So I’d have to mull on that one.” he added. ” It gets tempting right? You’d be tempted to go back, but then he’s messing with the timeline and that’s the sort of stuff that He Who Remains was doing.”

“Avengers: Infinity War,” which grossed $2.052 billion worldwide during its theatrical run in 2018, is among the top ten films on the all-time global box office list. In addition to Hiddleston, the film’s cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and more.

Meanwhile, joining Hiddleston in “Loki” Season 2 are Owen Wilson as Agent Mobius, Ke Huy Quan as Ouroboros, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Judge Ravonna Renslayer, Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes and Jonathan Majors as Victor Timely/He Who Remains.

Both seasons of “Loki” are now streaming on Disney+.

Emerging from the same tight-knit Mexico City scene that gave us Mabe Fratti, Titanic, and Amor Muere, Phét Phét Phét is led by Jarrett Gilgore, who played saxophone on Fratti’s album Se Ve Desde Aquí, and features guitarist I. la Católica and drummer Gibrán Andrade, who round out her studio and live ensembles. Their debut album, Shimmer, naturally shares certain similarities with other records from the same crew—sumptuous electro-acoustic textures, soaring harmonies, and an unpretentious grace— while also drawing from classical minimalism and spiritual jazz. On the album’s slow and stately title track, Gilgore’s layered woodwinds swirl into billowing, richly colored chords; I. la Católica alternates between blushing sunrise tones and flickering acoustic Brazilian accents. (Andrade, as always, is the secret bedrock, unflashy yet irreplaceable.) Fratti turns up in the song’s second half intoning a quiet spoken-word verse, something we’ve never heard from her before. “In the absence of conflicts,” she murmurs, “A world appears and develops.” It’s a hopeful song: a scale model of concord rendered in neatly interlocking parts.

Think about the experience of sitting and watching a movie. What is it about that big, wonderful image that connects with you? If you’re a diehard cineaste the answer might be the film’s cinematography or its use of music, special effects, sound design or something else. But for most audiences, chances are that the primary point of connection is the characters—and probably the actors embodying them.

It’s these performances that we identify with, root against and even lust after. But as much as their agents and managers might care for you to believe otherwise, actors don’t pop up in these roles by accident. Enter the Casting Director.

One of the most important (and unsung) positions on any film crew. the Casting Director is the person responsible for assembling the actors tasked with translating the script’s character description and dialogue into flesh-and-blood.

Below, we’ve collected some of our favorite advice from previous Film Independent “Meet the Casting Director” sessions, held in-person as part of our regular Filmmaker Tuesday events at Fi’s offices in Los Angeles.

OFFER ONLY? BUYER BEWARE.

For most actors, auditioning is an accepted part of the job. Spending long hours obsessively redoing self-tapes, or in dingy waiting room surrounded by other hopefuls (who all sort of look like you) eager to take your part? It’s as much a part of the job as saying lines in front of a camera. But there are some actors who are “offer-only”—meaning they will only consider a role if its offered outright. No auditions, no camera tests and no chemistry reads.

Obviously Tom Cruise isn’t going to take time to read sides for your web series. But sometimes, the “offer-only” mentality can infect performers who only perceive themselves as A-list. “There are some people you just know are offer-only,” explains Julie Hutchinson, who served as 20th Century Fox’s Vice President of Feature Casting (2002-2014) and Senior Vice President of Casting at Universal Pictures, adding: “It’s frustrating when you’re working with actors nobody has ever heard of and they say [they’re] offer only—what?!”

However, Angela Demo (previously featured inVanity Fair as one of their “5 Casting Directors Who Deserve Oscars”) hastens to add that generally if the script is strong enough, smart actors are willing to audition regardless of career level, citing her experience with the gritty docu-drama The Stanford Prison Experiment as an example. “You would not believe the caliber of actors coming through the door,” Demo said of the film (Stanford featured up-and-comers Tye Sheridan and a pre-Flash Ezra Miller, among others.) “It was clear that the passion for the project was there.”

GOING IN COLOR-BLIND.

The casting directors were asked, “When should you push for a more diverse cast when the script itself doesn’t bother to specify a character’s race or gender? This kind of color- and gender-blind casting used to be infrequent, but now occurs with increased regularity. But in fact, nontraditional casting has frequently made Hollywood history—Alien’s Ripley was originally written as a man, for example, and several of Will Smith’s early star-making roles were conceived without an African American actor in mind.

Julia Kim, a Korean-American whose casting director credits include the Film Independent Spirit Award winner Spa Night and Sean Baker’s Starlet, has deep ties to the Korean acting community. “I always try,” she says of the approach. “Really, it’s such a small part of the day just to see if it will work.” Demo adds: “I would bring in a woman [to audition for a male role]. It’s exciting to see what you can do.”

“One of our jobs is putting together a mosaic of different faces,” says Hutchinson. “It makes it interesting to watch.” However, Kim was careful to stress that injecting diversity into movie can be a balancing act. In Spa Night, she was strict about representing the film’s Korean-American milieu accurately, declining to consider other non-Korean Asian actors for Korean roles.

BIG STARS VS. SOBERING REALITY.

Casting a big star in your movie can of course be a surefire route to getting that all-important green light. But unless you’re a major studio securing the talents of name actors to topline your indie movie can be unrealistic. “It’s a challenge to do anything, but if the expectation is that we can only get this done with one of the top five people in town who get offered everything, then I have to manage expectation,” said Kerry Barden, whose credits include Boys Don’t Cry, American Psycho, Bad Boys 2, Pineapple Express and Spirit Award Robert Altman Award winner Spotlight.

“It’s not just the Johnny Depps,” said Kim. “It’s the Dane DeHaans. He may play bit parts in studio movies, but he’s on his way and he’s got a stack of scripts. Using the example, Demo stressed the importance of remaining flexible when considering other actors: “It’s great to have Dane DeHaan as a prototype, but let’s see who else is out there.”

Matthew Lessall, former Director of Feature Film Casting at 20th Century Fox, asked the panel how they knew if the group of actors they put together would be star-studded enough to satisfy the film’s director and producers. Demo admits: “You want some people that the audience knows so that they see the film, but it’s a balancing act.” Says Hutchinson: “It’s a fine dance between art and commerce. Sometimes you have to make concessions. You just hope that you don’t have to compromise too much.”

TAKE ONE, SQUARE ONE.

Lessall asked the casting directors if their directors enjoy being part of the audition process. Kim answers: “Yes, I work with lots of writer/directors who love hearing their words come to life.” Barden, who has worked extensively with Mary Harron, explained that the American Psycho and Daliland director “uses auditions as a tool to see what works and what doesn’t,” adding that during the process of casting 2005’s The Notorious Bettie Page, Harron “cut entire scenes [that weren’t] working. By the time we got to set there were scenes that were 100% different.”

Lessall then asked the panel if it was more fun to cast a film from scratch, or to spin a film’s ensemble out from one or two key attachments. “It’s fun to start from square one,” says Barden. “On Winter’s Bone we didn’t have anyone cast. We cast Jennifer Lawrence first and built out from there,” he said of the actor’s star-making turn in the 2010 indie. He adds: “When you see who the first person [who signs on] is, you sort of know what you’re going to get,” stressing that often, the first piece of the puzzle to fall into place will often dictate the caliber of talent signing on to the project moving forward.

“Pitch Perfect is the perfect example of starting from scratch,” says Hutchinson. “Anna [Kendrick] came in and auditioned with her ‘Cups’ song, and Rebel [Wilson] was always the director’s thought.”

The panel agreed that their community is a tight-knit one and that camaraderie—rather than competition—is what drives the process of placing the right actors in the right roles. “We’re a family,” says Hutchinson of herself and her peers. “We’re all in it together.”

Bravo is heating up with the return of two stalwart Real Housewives series.

The Real Housewives of Miami kicked off Season 6 on November 1, drawing 1.4M viewers across all platforms in the first seven days. That includes 695,000 viewers among adults 18-49, the key entertainment demographic.

According to NBCUniversal, that’s up 124% in total viewers and 75% in the demo compared to the Season 5 premiere. On Peacock, the Season 6 premiere was up 9% over the prior season in both total viewers and in the demo.

However, it’s worth noting that Bravo switched up its release strategy for the previous season. Season 5 rolled out weekly exclusively on Peacock before premiering on Bravo about three months later, which likely contributes to the discrepancy in “premiere” viewing. With Season 6, episodes are airing on Bravo and are available next day on Peacock.

A few days later, The Real Housewives of Potomac Season 8 debuted on November 5, scoring 2.1M total viewers in its first seven days. About a million of those viewers came from the 18-49 demo. According to NBCU, that’s the show’s most-watched season premiere in eight years in terms of total viewers, up 15% from the Season 7 debut.

The RHOP Season 8 premiere was also up 20% among adults 18-49, marking the show’s best premiere demo audience in three years. It’s also the most-watched RHOP episode ever on Peacock, ranking No. 6 against all next-day NBCU cable entertainment season premieres.

Bravo also saw success with the Season 10 premiere of Married to Medicine, which followed The Real Housewives of Potomac. The episode tallied 1.6M total viewers, with 723,000 among adults 18-49 within its first seven days across platforms.

That’s a 28% total audience increase and a 35% increase in the demo compared to the Season 9 premiere, boosting the Season 10 debut to become the show’s most-watched season premiere in more than four years since Season 7 in 2019.

It’s also the most-watched Married to Medicine episode ever on Peacock, according to NBCU.

Bravo is heating up with the return

Martin Scorsese is breaking down exactly why Killers of the Flower Moon ended up being so focused on the villainous Ernest Burkhart, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The director spoke about the topic following some criticism the film has received from the Indigenous community. During a virtual press event Wednesday, Scorsese was joined by stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons.

The Apple TV+ film tells the real-life tragedy of the 1920s murders of Osage Nation members after oil was found on their Oklahoma land. It has garnered considerable acclaim from critics. But some members of the Indigenous community have said the story should have focused more on the character Mollie Burkhart (Gladstone) and other Osage impacted by the murders. There has also been criticism that DiCaprio’s Ernest was made to seem overly sympathetic, and shouldn’t have been the film’s main focus. Questions for the group were screened in advance, and they did not take a question about the criticism directly, but Scorsese and DiCaprio still touched on some of the issues raised.

Scorsese first explained how the project — which was co-written by the director and Eric Roth and is based on a 2017 book by David Grann — ended up centering around Ernest. The iconic director first noted DiCaprio was originally going to play the heroic FBI agent Tom White, who ended up being played by Plemons.

“We took the character of Tom White that Leo was going to play and, after a couple of years [of development], we took it to its limit,” Scorsese said. “We felt that, ultimately, a story seen through the eyes of the Bureau of Investigation coming in from Washington to this area to find out who did it was — as David Grann pointed out — it was [more] a matter of who didn’t do it. Once I began to understand more the complicity and how we all may be culpable ourselves in life … and the fact that I got to know a lot of the Osage people because I kept going back to Oklahoma, and I kept hearing stories and they kept speaking about how the families are still there.”

He recalled how Margie Burkhart, the great granddaughter of Mollie and Ernest Burkhart, noted that her great grandparents had been in love..

“A lot of these deceptions and betrayals and murders came out of people who really liked each other … Ultimately, we were stuck,” Scorsese continued. “We we really couldn’t get into the the true nature of what this tragedy was, at which point Leo [asked], ‘Where’s the heart of it?’ And I said, ‘Well, the heart is that Molly and Ernest are in love.’ So he says, ‘So maybe I should play Ernest,’ and which point everything turned upside down …. And so the Bureau of Investigation did come in and solve a lot of the issues … but primarily it’s told, as much as possible, from the ground level in which the Osage and the European American were living together.”

Added DiCaprio: “As far fetched as it may seem to others who see this movie — who are shocked at the atrocities that Ernest continues to commit and Molly’s understanding of what’s going on — it’s based on hard evidence and a sense of community from the Osage that in a lot of ways they have not openly talked about before. So here we are, 100 years later, bringing up these these ghosts and the stories from the past in the actual locations and working with direct descendants of this of this tragedy.”

And Gladstone noted, “It was a different culture. It was a different time. It was a different period. But the most important element of all of it, for me, was that I was never alone on set. If I was uncertain about a choice I was making there was not just one but several Osage people in every level of production close at hand. It was great comfort as an actress and it’s also just essential because drawing on the culture in such a vivid way sets the scene.”

The criticism started at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, where an Osage language consultant who worked on the movie, Christopher Cote, expressed mixed feelings about the story’s focus to The Hollywood Reporter.

“As an Osage, I really wanted this to be from the perspective of Mollie and what her family experienced, but I think it would take an Osage to do that,” Cote said. “Martin Scorsese, not being Osage, I think he did a great job representing our people, but this history is being told almost from the perspective of Ernest Burkhart and they kind of give him this conscience and kind of depict that there’s love. But when somebody conspires to murder your entire family, that’s not love. That’s not love, that’s just beyond abuse.”

After the film’s was released Oct. 20, Reservation Dogs star Devery Jacobs blasted the movie in a scathing thread on X.

“Being Native, watching this movie was fucking hellfire,” she wrote. “Imagine the worst atrocities committed against yr ancestors, then having to sit thru a movie explicitly filled w/ them, w/ the only respite being 30min long scenes of murderous white guys talking about/planning the killings … I don’t feel that these very real people were shown honor or dignity in the horrific portrayal of their deaths. Contrarily, I believe that by showing more murdered Native women on screen, it normalizes the violence committed against us and further dehumanizes our people.”

That said, Jacobs praised Gladstone’s performance: “Give Lily her goddam Oscar.”

On Tuesday, news broke that Flower Moon will receive receive the Vanguard Award at this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Vanguard Award is a group honor “distinguishing a film’s cast and director in recognition of their collective work on an exceptional film project,” according to the festival. Scorsese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone will be presented with the award.

Martin Scorsese is breaking down exactly why

While “Barbie” producer-star Margot Robbie has spoken before about how part of her pitch to Warner Bros. foretelling how the film would make a billion dollars included comparing it to Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park,” writer-director Greta Gerwig has only now revealed to Todd Field — in the exclusive video above — that the fellow critically-acclaimed blockbuster inspired the way she and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto actually shot “Barbie.”

“We decided we wanted the aspect ratio to be 2:1, because that’s the aspect ratio that [Steven] Spielberg shot ‘Jurassic Park’ in and dinosaurs are quite vertical,” said Gerwig to the fellow detail-oriented, Oscar-nominated “TÁR” director, who asked about the way she approached “Barbie” differently from her previously films from a craft standpoint. “It just also amused me to think the best way to shoot dolls and dinosaurs is 2:1.”

The moment is reflective of much of the conversation with Field, which balances talk of the technical aspects of directing “Barbie” with the fun that was had on the fluorescent fuchsia set that led to a worldwide paint shortage. For example, Gerwig notes how helpful it was that Robbie happened to be best friends with one of the camera crew members tasked with shooting a lot of the film’s major setpieces.

“They had a secret language, so we could do crazy dolly shots because he and she would know when they were moving and stopping,” said the filmmaker. “We were doing the chase through Mattel and all these things, and they’d nod at each other, and then they could just run together. And these were things that ordinarily you would do a different way if the actor and the dolly grip didn’t have this relationship, but they were just really so in sync.”

Having seen the film three times now, and considering it a “a really, really incredible accomplishment,” Field said he “get[s] something more from it every time I watch it,” and joked to Gerwig, “You must have incredible outtakes on this film.”

Gerwig shared that, if anyone was caught breaking, it was most likely her, as she was in awe of the group of performers she had assembled with the help of casting directors Lucy Bevan and Allison Jones (the latter of whom worked on her debut feature “Lady Bird” as well). “Our lovely sound mixer Nina was like, ‘If you could just not do that in the middle of the thing,’ but it was impossible,” said the director. “They were all just outrageously creative. … They don’t just show up and act. They’re also working with Jacqueline [Durran] with the costumes, and it’s like they got to become kids again and play again.”

While “Barbie” producer-star Margot Robbie has spoken

The album was recorded in one take with a saxophone, glockenspiel, two microphones, and portable recorder. As a document of a live performance, it combines the tension of an improv set with the petty thrill of trespassing. “stand still like a hummingbird” opens with several seconds of silence before short saxophone blasts reveal the garage’s cavernous resonance. Running water, perhaps from a custodian or shopkeeper washing up late at night, can be heard in the background. As Shiroishi’s improv progresses, he develops a language of piercingly high notes, fluttering runs, and breathy puffs of air, all of which cascade through the concrete passages of the garage and return slightly delayed and diminished.

The centerpiece of I was too young to hear silence, the seven-minute “tule lake blues,” is a memorial for his grandparents that transitions from soulful melodies into keening metallic screeches, as if Shiroishi is finally voicing his grandmother’s wordless despair at the mention of the eponymous camp. Two songs after that cathartic moment, some of his loveliest playing appears on on “is it possible to send promises backwards?,” a joyfully acrobatic display that seems to glory in movement itself. Finally, “if only heaven would give me another ten years” closes the album with celebratory lines that arc brightly through the air before resting again in the silence of the Los Angeles night.

Shiroishi’s productivity is due in part to his versatility. Through a multitude of guest appearances, he has found a space for his saxophone in the Armed’s muscular hardcore, Agriculture’s ecstatic black metal, and Quicksails’ fractured electronica, among scores of others. But I was too young to hear silence showcases Shiroishi’s music at its purest. The raw, impromptu output of a player uniquely attuned to his instrument and purpose, it amounts to an exorcism of the generational trauma that informed this searching night underground.

“9-1-1: Lone Star” Season 5 will not return to Fox until Fall 2024, Variety has confirmed.

According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the fifth season of the spinoff series will consist of 12 episodes. Fox will use “Lone Star,” it’s highest-rated drama, to launch its new shows “Doc” and “Rescue: Hi-Surf,” both of which were ordered earlier this year but have yet to begin production.

It is the latest production impacted by the writers’ and actors’ strikes that shutdown Hollywood for much of the year. With shows scrambling to get back up and running now that both strikes are settled, a number of series are being pushed to later dates. Most recently, CBS announced premiere dates for several of their scripted shows for midseason, while others are also being pushed to next fall. Those shows will also have abbreviated runs, like “Lone Star.”

But fans of Rob Lowe, who leads the “Lone Star” cast, can expect to see him back on Fox on Jan. 2 when the network debuts the new game show “The Floor,” of which he is the host.

It was announced in May that “Lone Star” had been renewed for a fifth season, while “9-1-1” would be moving from Fox to ABC for that show’s seventh season. ABC has yet to set a premiere date for the series, which has yet to resume production but is expected to do so in January.

The 2023-2024 broadcast season was heavily impacted by the strikes, with nearly all scripted original programming being replaced by unscripted fare, repeats, and foreign imports.

Deadline first reported “Lone Star’s” move to Fall 2024.
