Heidi Burge Horton, a former WNBA player who started her basketball career alongside her twin sister at Palos Verdes High School and inspired a Disney Channel Original Movie, has died. She was 54.

Horton died Oct. 5 after a battle with gliobastoma, a type of brain cancer, according to an online obituary. The former University of Virginia standout was reportedly diagnosed with the Grade 4 cancer last year and briefly went into remission, but the tumors returned in July, according to Houston news site Chron.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Heidi Burge Horton,” the Virginia women’s basketball team said in a statement last week on X. “Heidi was a cherished member of the Virginia Women’s Basketball family, her legacy will forever be a part of Virginia Athletics.”

Horton and her identical twin, Heather Burge, played four seasons at Virginia, where they helped the team win three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and make three NCAA Final Fours under future Hall of Fame coach Debbie Ryan. Among their teammates at college was Dawn Staley, the Hall of Famer and Olympian who coaches the University of South Carolina.

“We are all heartbroken!” Staley wrote on X. “We love you Heidi. May your soul rest in peace and your body pain free.”

After graduating from college, Horton and her sister headed overseas to play professionally in Europe. When the WNBA was formed in 1996, she joined the Sparks to play in the inaugural season alongside a familiar face, Lisa Leslie.

“I played with the twins since we were 14 years old,” Leslie wrote, along with a broken heart emoji, in the comments of the WNBA’s Instagram post announcing Horton’s death. “I’m so sad to hear this! I pray for the whole family.”

Heidi Ann Burge was born six minutes after her twin sister, Heather Marie, on Nov. 12, 1971, in Harbor City. She grew up in Redondo Beach before her family moved to Palos Verdes so the sisters could attend the high school there, according to a notice by Eickenhorst Funeral Services.

The twins didn’t grow up playing basketball but were recruited by Palos Verdes High‘s coach, who noticed their towering height. Both sisters were 6 feet 1 by ninth grade and would grow to be 6-5.

Horton was more resistant to trying out than her sister, and both were novices when they joined the team. The sisters would become star players over the course of their high school careers, but they were praised more for their character and work ethic than their impact on the court.

“I don’t think they’ve had a weekend off in three years,” their coach, Wendell Yoshida, told The Times in 1989. “They’ve practiced when they didn’t want to practice. They’ve worked through the tears, the sweat, the hurt, the pain. That’s what made them special. They didn’t make it just because they’re tall.”

Horton was known as the more outgoing and gregarious of the pair, but both sisters were described as being inquisitive, opinionated, fiercely loyal and competitive.

The adjustment to the college game was a bit rough for them at first, and the sisters did not get much playing time together until their junior year. They developed a reputation for being prone to mistakes and turnovers and were considered a bit soft. But once again, the sisters put in the work to improve and became key pieces for their team.

“When we did cry it was mostly out of frustration,” Horton told The Times in 1992. “Just not being able to do the things the other players could do. … Our defense wasn’t effective enough for us to deserve to be out there together. Now, we’ve proved offensively and defensively that we are an unstoppable pair when we get to play together.”

After graduating with degrees in Spanish and rhetoric and communications studies, Horton played professionally in Europe. She played for the Sparks in 1997 and the Washington Mystics in 1998 before retiring from the WNBA after two seasons.

Horton and her sister inspired the 2002 Disney Channel Original Movie “Double Teamed,” a fictionalized account of the twins’ time at Palos Verdes High. Horton was portrayed by Annie McElwain.

After retiring from playing, Horton moved to Houston, where she briefly served as a commentator for the WNBA’s Comets. She later became involved with Hoops-School, a youth camp where she served as a coach and mentor.

“When you had the kind of coaching I did, you have to work really hard,” Horton told the Buzz Magazines in 2024. “But I also want to give a lot of credit to my coaches. Now I get to give the golden nuggets of wisdom to the kids I coach.

“Second-graders, fifth-graders, they listen,” she added. “That’s the biggest reward in your whole life. I had so many people pour into me, and I get to just pour it right out. That’s the torch.”

Horton is survived by her husband, Patrick; their children, Jonathan and Holly; her twin sister, Heather Quella, and other loved ones.

MARVEL.COM: What drew you to Jean Grey? What facets of her character are you excited to explore in this new book?

MACKAY: As one of the original five X-Men, she’s been there since the beginning, and there’s not only a rich history to explore, there’s also digging into how that history has shaped her in the present. Jean’s been a lot of different things over the years, but [she] also means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, so I’ve been looking forward to winnowing down these disparate interpretations into who she is now.

MARVEL.COM: Jean Grey is an extremely powerful hero. What can you tell us about the kinds of threats you put her up against?

MACKAY: Given Jean’s power and her history, her foe in this series could be nothing less than elemental. Jean is going to be going up [against] a primal force that threatens to return everything to a former age- and it’s going to take everything she has to fight it!

MARVEL.COM: How would you describe Jean’s relationship to the Phoenix Force in this series?

MACKAY: It’s a work in progress. Post-DNX, we’re seeing Jean go through some changes, re-evaluating how her relationship with the Phoenix will have to work in the light of her immediate goals.

MARVEL.COM: What was it like working with Rogê Antônio on this book?

MACKAY: Rogê is bringing his whole suite of talents to this book. He’s nailing subtle, emotional acting while balancing it out with explosive, cosmic grandeur. I think people are going to be really excited by his work on this series, and I can’t wait for readers to see it!

MARVEL.COM: What drew you to Jean Grey?

Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II won’t just be a Matt Reeves film anymore. According to a report coming from Deadline, acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh is coming in to finish principal photography on the long-awaited sequel, after Reeves had to step away due to an ongoing family matter. Principal photography has already been going on since June. Although Reeves can’t actually be on set, the directors will work together and remain in communication until filming ends. Afterward, Reeves will take over post-production duties. It’s unclear if Soderbergh will get a co-directing credit.

DC Studios/Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios released the following statement:

As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman – Part II. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.

Steven Soderbergh also released a statement about taking over behind-the-camera duties on the film:

I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.

Nerdist’s Take: This Might Seem Like the Zack Snyder Justice League Situation, But We Think It’s Quite Different

This is already very different than what happened with Zack Snyder on Justice League, when Warner Bros. replaced him with Joss Whedon. Snyder had no say in what the final cut would be back then. And as Ben Affleck recently confirmed, the studio used the personal tragedy in Snyder’s life to fire the director. Something the actor categorized as “gross.” It seems what’s going on with The Batman – Part II is totally different. It remains to be seen if these delays cause the release date of February 18, 2028 to get pushed back yet again. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and new cast members Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, and Brian Tyree Henry.

Quick Take After stepping away to deal with

A major Star Wars Zero Company update is out now, introducing new campaign modifiers, nerfs to Cly, and several bug fixes and technical improvements. Bit Reactor has also significantly reduced Upgrade Facility costs, addressing player feedback about the high prices that made upgrades less appealing.

Star Wars Zero Company Update Slashes Upgrade Facility Costs

There’s a lot to go over in this patch, but one of the highlights is easily the changes to the Upgrade Facility. Bit Reactor acknowledged that players weren’t engaging with the facility because upgrade costs were too high and Credits were often needed elsewhere. Today’s major 1.2 update reduces prices across the board, making upgrades more affordable and Build Slots more viable. Here are a few highlights:

  • Rifle Damage III reduced from 7,000 to 2,500 Credits.
  • Outer Influence II reduced from 4,500 to 1,000 Credits.
  • Focus Point III reduced from 6,500 to 2,000 Credits.
  • All four Increased Crew Quarters upgrades are now free.
  • Recruiting Operators now costs a flat 100 Credits, regardless of roster size.

These are just a few of the many changes the Upgrade Facility has seen in this update, and I’m glad they’ve finally made it a bit more approachable and affordable.

Other Star Wars Zero Company Patch 1.2 Highlights

On the other hand, Bit Reactor has acknowledged that some players want a greater challenge than the default difficulty settings offer. To address this, the team has introduced Campaign Modifiers, allowing players to significantly increase the difficulty and fine-tune just how punishing they want their campaign to be.

  • Injury Limits: Choose between Instant Death, Two Strikes, or the default Three Strikes rules, which determine how many Injuries an Operator can sustain before being permanently killed when defeated in a Tactical Mission.
  • Risk of Death: Keep the default death rules, enable a 20% chance of permanent death when an Operator is defeated in tactical combat, or enable escalating risk that rises to 40% after surviving a first defeat and 80% after surviving a second.
  • Health Progression: Keep the default health gains of +1 Maximum Health per 3 Focus Points, reduce them to +1 per 6 Focus Points, or disable health increases entirely.
  • Bond Progression: Prevent disliked Operator pairs from gaining Cross Training through Bond Level increases until they reach Bond Level 4.
  • Advantage Rules: Prevent area attacks or assist attacks from generating Advantage, or reduce the chance of gaining Advantage from damaging attacks to 50%.
  • Tactical Modifiers: Allow assist shots to miss, give enemy ranged and melee attacks a 5% chance to deal an additional 8 damage through critical hits, or cap Operator ranged accuracy at 99%.
  • Lockout Modifiers: Lock Operators’ talents, specializations, or weapons to prevent respecs, or disable manual recruitment refreshes. Recruits will still refresh automatically at the beginning of each cycle.

Campaign Modifiers can be enabled through the Difficulty Settings menu when starting a new campaign on any difficulty. Selected modifiers take effect after completing the tutorial.

I’m also happy and sad to report that Cly, who can practically carry the entire game on her back, has been nerfed. Her Combat Jump is now limited to one use per turn, while ElectroWeb Dart can only be used three times per turn. The update also introduces balance changes to other abilities, including the Astromech’s Self-Repair and Built-In Comlink.

There are also several bug fixes and technical improvements detailed in the full patch notes.

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount/Legendary’s PG-13 take of Capcom videogame

“The Batman: Part II” will soon resume production with Steven Soderbergh stepping in to finish principal photography while director Matt Reeves continues to attend to a family matter, IndieWire has confirmed.

Production on the Batman sequel at DC starring Robert Pattinson has been delayed for a little over a week as a result of Reeves’ absence.

“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on ‘The Batman Part 2.’ Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film,” the studio said in a statement to IndieWire.

Soderbergh himself also added a statement: “I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

“The Batman: Part II” is dated for release on February 18, 2028, and that date as of yet has not shifted amid the delay. There will be a six-year gap between the original “The Batman” with Pattinson and the sequel after the original grossed $772 million worldwide.

The new film sees Pattinson reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, alongside Colin Farrell returning as The Penguin and Andy Serkis returning as Alfred, and newcomers Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch. There’s rumors that Stan is playing Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two Face, but that’s unclear. The only thing he had to say about the film to our Anne Thompson is that the film is “in a very deep, deep winter.”

Soderbergh is a fascinating name to work in a fill-in capacity, let alone on a tentpole superhero film. He obviously has history with Warner Bros. on the Ocean’s movies and with HBO and HBO Max on films like “No Sudden Move.” He is one of the quickest, most prolific directors working today, but this would represent his biggest film in a while and his only studio film since 2023’s “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” And though he’s long been based in New York, he’s now based in London where “The Batman: Part II” is shooting.

His last narrative film was this year’s “The Christophers” from Neon, and he also directed a documentary, “John Lennon: The Last Interview,” that premiered at Cannes but is currently without distribution.

Cynthia Erivo is rounding out her cast of magical beings with the latest Bad Fairies news, which announced live on Thursday at the Hollywood Bowl.

During her one-night-only concert Let Me Sing to You, the 2x Grammy winner revealed that Kylie Minogue, Jonathan Groff and Catherine Tate have joined her in the cast of the Warner Bros./Locksmith animated musical comedy, which is scheduled to premiere May 21, 2027 in theaters, in addition to teasing an orchestral arrangement of her character Jayne’s song “Hard to Believe”.

Minogue will voice Clowder, the Cat Witch, Groff will voice Robin Goodfellow, and Tate will voice the Fairy Gothmother. They join Cynthia Erivo, who leads the film as Jayne Staplegun.

Minogue, who was in attendance at Thursday’s show, said in a statement, “I’m so excited to be part of Bad Fairies, alongside the incredible Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Groff and such a brilliant cast of voices. And getting to play both a cat and a witch? It’s a little bit magical, a little bit mischievous and a whole lot of fun.”

Directed by Megan Nicole Dong and co-directed by Olivier Staphylas, Bad Fairies is an original musical comedy set in contemporary London that follows a delightfully subversive gang of fairies as they shake up their magical world. The film is penned by Deborah Frances-White.

Previously announced cast includes Serrana Su-Ling Bliss as Fei Chang, James Acaster as Stickers, Dee Bradley Baker as Groundbeef and Ncuti Gatwa as Butterwort.

Tony-winning duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss (Six: The Musical) are writing original songs, with Grammy-nominated Isabella “Machine” Summers (Florence + The Machine) composing the score and contributing to the songs. Ian Eisendrath (KPop Demon Hunters) serves as executive music producer.

The bouyon scene in Dominica is moving so fast that you can go from new guy on the block to OG in a blink. Trilla-G has been a good sport about it; two weeks ago, he used his status as the dirty-macking party boy of the island to host a cypher for the next generation trying to get in on their homegrown sound’s big bang. The breakout star of the clip, filmed at an open-air bar, was G’z Up (I wonder if he’s ever heard the Max B and Jimmy heater), a baggy Lacoste polo-wearing rhymer who looked like he had never been on camera before. He’s not doing a whole lot other than listing off social media platforms and popular locations, but the trick is the casual way he switches between bouncy rhythms as ThaWizZarD’s keyboard melodies get progressively wackier. His part of the cypher has been officially released as “Fix Up (Ya Ya Ya)” and it sounds just as loose and easy. Naturally, I’ve looked for other G’z Up songs but have only been able to find one—an inspirational bouyon ballad with bizarre AI cover art of him getting baptized by Jesus. I’ll be sticking with “Fix Up.”

SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains major spoilers from “Collide,” the Season 23 premiere of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” streaming on Hulu.

There’s a new sheriff in town at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

In the Season 23 premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy,” the doctors of TV’s most indomitable hospital are convened for the grand opening of a lavish new VIP floor. Ostensibly designed to give wealthy patients a luxury stay — complete with private suites, high-level security, hotel-quality bedding and access to private chefs — the venture is backed by Seth Norton (James Wolk), a physician-turned-businessman who also happens to be Grey Sloan’s new chief of surgery.

Following the simultaneous departures of former chiefs Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) at the end of last season, long-time fans might have expected another familiar face to take the helm. Instead, showrunner Meg Marinis opted for a corporate outsider, using Norton’s appointment to reflect the stark financial sacrifices modern hospitals must make just to keep their doors open to the general public.

James Wolk

Courtesy of Disney

“I was really interested in this idea of a VIP floor and exploring the upstairs-downstairs of medicine, which is really being talked about lately. The healthcare disparity is only growing more, unfortunately, and it’s something that felt very topical,” Marinis tells Variety. “We at Grey Sloan have always provided VIP care to the entire hospital, but I wanted to see what that conflict would look like for our doctors.”

Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), naturally, is the first doctor to express her skepticism about the VIP initiative and the man who will now be running the hospital where she began her career as an intern. “Meredith says at the end of the premiere, ‘This will implode,’ so I think everybody should be waiting to see if it implodes,” Marinis says with a laugh. “We’ll see [Norton] in conflict with a bunch of our series regulars. He was brought in for a purpose. Medicine’s business for him, and that’s not typically how our doctors have treated their careers.”

In the wide-ranging conversation below, Marinis breaks down all of the personal and professional twists from the premiere; addresses the perennial chatter that this season of “Grey’s” could be the show’s last amid another wave of industry-wide budget cuts — and offers a status update on the untitled West Texas “Grey’s” spinoff, which she is co-creating with Shonda Rhimes.

Debbie Allen

Courtesy of Disney

Meredith makes it immediately clear to Seth, Catherine (Debbie Allen) and Richard (James Pickens Jr.) that she feels like the hospital is already prioritizing corporate interests over the hospital’s standard of care. “Grey’s” has explored that friction in the American healthcare system before, but what new sides of that conversation are you looking to open up this season?

I think it’s different, because Meredith is now not just a resident, she’s an attending who also has an ownership stake in the hospital. The risk of a hospital shutting down and patients losing all their doctors, all their care — that is something you have to really balance. We will explore what it looks like when a hospital shuts down, too. It’s not going to necessarily be Grey Sloan, but you’ve seen it happen in L.A., and sometimes it can happen without a moment’s notice. It’s something I’ve always been interested in. And also, who’s going to take all those patients?

How much will we see of Ellen as Meredith this season? Will she still appear in around seven episodes like she has in past seasons?

We haven’t confirmed that yet, but I say this every year: I want her as much as we can get her. When she’s here on the show, it’s great for us. She’s got a couple of different projects happening on the side, so at this point it just becomes a scheduling game. We love Meredith; we’ll have Meredith in as many episodes as we can. We just have to respect her other projects too.

You have previously told me about how you tend to stretch Meredith’s arc across multiple episodes, so that Ellen can come in and shoot a bunch of scenes at once to accommodate her busy schedule. Did Ellen feel particularly strongly about where she wants Meredith to go this season?

100%. We talk about the creative ahead of time. I want her to feel like she has a part in the stories that we’re going to tell for Meredith. She’s played the character for 23 years. She’ll often have little things that she wants to talk about, but sometimes, she’ll see something in the news or she’ll read about something in medicine, and she’ll call me and say, “Are y’all thinking about doing this?” She’s definitely a collaborative partner, and we try to make it work. It just depends, again, on schedule.

Is Meredith’s arc going to be tied to this new patient (Martin Martinez) who is in the foster care system and potentially has cancer?

They will have more stories together. That’s not her only arc, but yes.

Scott Speedman has already wrapped production on Season 2 of “R.J. Decker,” so he will presumably be available to return to “Grey’s” this season. Will we get to see Meredith and Nick’s wedding onscreen this season?

I’m going to see him soon! That’s what I’ll say.

Bailey (Chandra Wilson) realizes that she needs to take something off her plate in order to take on this new challenge of getting her masters in public health, so she decides to name Winston (Anthony Hill) the new residency director. How much will we see of Bailey in the classroom this season?

We’ll see a little bit of her at school, but it was important to me that we still see her in the hospital, because what she’s seeing in the hospital is inspiring her educational journey. But we’ll see her on campus in Episode 2.

What are you looking to explore with Winston and Jules’ (Adelaide Kane) relationship this season, now that you have the added complication of Winston being directly responsible for the residency program?

Well, I’m exploring some mess! Because we’ve created a big old mess for them. Twenty-three years ago, this storyline would’ve been much different, but now we’re in 2026. This has been their fear for as far back as when they started experiencing this attraction — that they can’t be together. There’s a power dynamic. Honestly, maybe they were thinking about coming clean to everybody, but then he couldn’t say no to Bailey because being residency director is also good for his career. So I think they’re both flawed, right? They’re not making every decision the way they should, so I think that we’re going to see that rocky path.

Caterina Scorsonne, Jen Landon

At the end of last season, Toni (Jen Landon) was finally ready to take a leap and pursue a romantic relationship with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) — until she caught her hooking up with Cass (Sophia Bush). Toni was so hurt that she felt the need to leave the state to get away from Amelia temporarily, but the two finally reconcile and share a steamy kiss in the premiere. What did you want to convey through the writing of that speech, and what’s next for them?

If you look at the history of the character of Amelia, even going all the way back to “Private Practice,” she has this tendency to self-sabotage, and I was really interested in seeing a piece of growth from that self-sabotage where she can at least acknowledge and name it. She didn’t intend to cheat on Toni with Cass because she wanted to cheat. She slept with her because she was hurt, and she thought that Toni was going back to her ex-wife. We made it look like Toni was going back with the ex-wife.

We have debates about this in the writers’ room on who was at fault here, because a lot of people are like, “Team Amelia! Toni strung her along in those last two episodes saying, ‘I might go back with her. I might not go back with her.’” But then a lot of people are like, “No, Amelia slept with somebody else! She’s dead to Toni!” So it really depends on who you ask, but I think those two actors have fantastic chemistry. I love working with Jen. I love the character of Toni and what she does also for Ben Warren. That’s a really fun dynamic to watch. We’re going to see more of that as well. So we’re just going to have to see if they can find this new happiness, but it’s “Grey’s.” We’ll throw things at them, don’t worry.

Are you planning to delve more at all into Toni’s background before Grey Sloan? Will we meet Toni’s elusive ex-wife this season?

Never say never!

Besides her personal relationship with Toni, will Amelia be dealing with anything new on the professional side this season?

Yes. This will affect all the doctors, but for her, there’ll be more of a story because some of our residents are going to have to choose what area they’re focusing on. We know that there’s a familial connection to neurosurgery, so we’ll definitely explore that between her and Lucas [Niko Terho].

Jen Landon, Chris Carmack, Camilla Luddington

Jo (Camilla Luddington) is still dealing with the trauma of almost dying while giving birth to her and Link’s (Chris Carmack) twins midway through last season. She officially quits her job by the end of the premiere. This feels particularly like a fork-in-the-road moment for her — and it’s not entirely clear if she’ll be able to go back to her old self after this experience.

We’re not going to wrap it up in Episode 2. We have a lot of people quit and then come back. But her traumatic health scare really impacted her last season. PTSD after birth trauma is something that affects so many women, and I didn’t want to gloss over the fact that it takes time to process. So we’ll see her question that, and it’s going to affect how she chooses to parent her kids. She’s a fighter. This is going to be a time of personal discovery of a couple of ups and downs. The really difficult part is she thinks that she’s the only problem at home right now, but there’s a whole other thing brewing that she doesn’t know about.

You pointed out to me last season that Link is a little bit more traditional, in the sense that he doesn’t always want to ask for help. You also mentioned that your writers’ room will explore addiction “in a more nuanced way than the stereotypical thing of seeing someone popping pills every five minutes.” What are those more nuanced conversations about drug dependency going to look like going forward?

We’re going to see him get a little bit deeper into what’s going on, and then we’ll explore those conversations. Right now, he’s in denial, right? There are stages of addiction that impact everyone. It’s a different journey for everybody, but we’re really interested in telling the story of how someone is functioning in all areas of their life, but then there’s this little secret going on. It makes it even more heartbreaking because everybody else thought everything was fine at home and at work. He will hide it at first, and then it makes it much more painful, but it will come out.

“Grey’s” being “Grey’s,” Simone (Alexis Floyd) discovers that she is pregnant with either Lucas or Wes’ (Trevor Jackson) baby. Why did you want to throw yet another baby into the middle of a love triangle on this show?

It’s going to take a few episodes to unravel, and that’s why we told the fertility story last season. We had been planning it that way. It’s different in the sense that she just found out that she may not be able to have children the old-fashioned way, so that adds another layer to it. She’s definitely not ready to have a baby, but she doesn’t know if this is the one time that she’s got. I think a lot of women have to struggle with that. Do you put everything on pause? Do you have it? Or do you make the decision to focus on your career? And is she going to go through that alone, or is she going to tell one of these guys?

Did Alexis always know that you were planning for Simone to get pregnant, or did you also spring this reveal on her when she read the premiere?

I waited to tell her until the premiere. Honestly, we planned it last season, then I wrote the premiere and didn’t do it because everyone on social media thought we were going there, and then I missed it and I put it back. So I’m as transparent a showrunner as I can be to the cast, but I didn’t want her to be stewing over that over the summer if I wasn’t sure.

Harry Shum Jr.

Courtesy of Disney

Richard fired Blue (Harry Shum Jr.) at the end of last season for injecting a patient with an unapproved drug, and Blue has been keeping himself occupied by taking online French lessons. He ends up treating his teacher secretly at Grey Sloan after he realizes that she is suffering a medical emergency, and he is clearly still itching to get back to practicing medicine. What else has he been up to since his firing, and what is next for him?

For Blue, there’s been a lot of video-game playing and sitting on the couch, and he’s going through the different stages where he is in shock and denial. He’s trying to pretend that he’s fine and filling up his day with activities like French lessons, but that isn’t how it is in Episode 2. He’s saying that he’s happy being unemployed, but there’s no way that character is happy not practicing medicine. We’ll have to see whether or not he is going to sacrifice and go into something else, or if he’s not going to give up and try to get back into Richard’s good graces. Also, it’s not necessarily Richard who will let him back. Maybe there’s another way into it…

How much will we see of Harry Shum Jr. this season now that he’s busy competing on “Dancing With the Stars”?

I’ve got to give Harry Shum Jr. so much credit. I know he’s doing “Dancing With the Stars” because I was approached about it and he is on my TV, and I don’t have him on Tuesdays. But besides that, everything is completely normal, except when you see him practicing with Jenna Johnson outside of the stages. He must not be sleeping, because he’s not called me once to say, “I need time.”

So have you been holding “DWTS” viewing parties every week with the cast and crew?

Yes. We put up the East Coast feed on a screen outside the stages with a QR code reminding people to vote, and a few of us have gone to the tapings.

Looking ahead to the next couple of episodes, I understand that Episode 3 features a Dolly Parton impersonator as a patient.

We were in the middle of shooting that storyline when Dolly Parton passed. It was a story that was pitched out of our writers’ room by the writer of Episode 3, Jase Miles-Perez. We were laughing, and we thought it was a hilarious storyline and so endearing because, again, who doesn’t like Dolly Parton? The impersonator storyline is so fun, but it was emotional over here, in particular for Debbie [Allen]. She was directing that storyline when we had to walk over there and pull her aside and tell her what happened. Obviously, it wasn’t planned, but we were able to honor her with the storyline, and it must have been a trip. I don’t understand how Debbie did that. We were literally filming the storyline that day on stage — and the title of that episode [“It’s All Wrong, but It’s All Right”] is a Dolly Parton song.

Are the rest of the characters going to pick up the slack in trauma now that Owen and Teddy are gone?

Yeah, right now, that’s how it’s going. I really didn’t want to say that those two characters or doctors at the hospital were replaceable. So I think even just having somebody like Seth Norton as chief, that’s showing how much this hospital will miss Teddy.

Are there any plans right now to revisit Maggie (Kelly McCreary)? She appeared in the 450th episode last season, and shared with Meredith and Amelia that she is pregnant via a sperm donor.

That’s so funny. Kelly texted me yesterday. She was letting me know about a play or something that she was doing. I would love to have an update on Maggie. It depends on where we are creatively. She probably has a baby by now, unless it’s the longest pregnancy like Jo Wilson’s was.

Are you able to confirm how many episodes you are making for Season 23?

No, that hasn’t been confirmed with me yet.

You and I have spoken about the challenges of trying to make “Grey’s” — which features one of the largest ensembles on TV — in today’s financial climate. You’ve had to reduce the number of episodes that characters appear in, and like so many other shows, you’re potentially facing a reduced episode count for this season.

Every show is feeling it. You even feel it when you’re developing a new show, when you learn what’s available. I’ve had conversations that I never had before when starting up the new [“Grey’s” spinoff]. Every episode at Season 23 is a gift, and a lot of people here feel that way. Maybe it’ll go on to Season 50, but probably not. You look at the budget every episode, and you’re like, “Can I go on location? Can I not go on location? Can I afford visual effects? Can we not see a green screen?” Every episode, there are conversations like that.

No one’s told me that the end is coming, so for that I’m grateful. I feel like because of what this show has done, they will give me a little bit of a heads’ up. But it’s always top of mind because of what you’re seeing in the industry. We always know that this year could be the [final] year, but so far, we’re still going; they’re still allowing us to make these episodes. And if there is a shorter order or not, again, we’re just grateful that we’ve had what we’ve had, and we’ll take whatever we can get. It’s an honor to tell these stories.

What is the status of the “Grey’s” West Texas spinoff that you are co-creating with Shonda?

It’s in the works, and we’re very, very excited about it. It’s so cool to get the opportunity to create something with her, especially about something that is so dear to me. I can’t say much about it because I’m not authorized to do it, but it’s still everything that you’ve heard or read. It’s in rural West Texas. It is a spinoff, so we’ll connect it to “Grey’s.” The timing on that is still being discussed, just because we want to do what’s best for both shows. All those conversations are happening literally as we speak, and I wish I could clone myself.

You were born and raised in Houston, Texas. Did you pitch Shonda the idea of a West Texas spinoff and have her come on board to co-write the pilot with you? How involved is she in this new expansion of the universe she created?

She’s very involved. She’s been involved from the very beginning. She wanted to expand the universe, and I wanted to be involved in it. I’m from Texas, so I’ve always wanted to tell a story about West Texas. I’m a huge fan of the TV shows that have been in West Texas. My father’s from there, and I’ve spent quite a bit of time there.

Something that I’ve always been interested in just from working on “Grey’s” is what’s happening in these medical deserts, and the amount and how quickly these places are closing. People are having to travel an hour just to get a sore throat looked at. The amount of birthing centers that have closed — people have to travel two hours to have their baby. And it’s happening not just in West Texas; it’s happening all over the country. I think Vermont is a state that has one of the worst medical deserts. So even though it’s in Texas, I think it will apply and resonate with what’s happening in all small towns in America.

Alberta’s Opposition NDP is proposing a three-part plan to address concerns about detainees and offenders being released in Edmonton’s Chinatown.

In recent weeks, surveillance video has surfaced showing Edmonton police and Alberta corrections officers dropping off people who had recently been released from custody in and around Chinatown.

Community member Wai-Ling Lennon said the situation is affecting people’s sense of safety in a neighbourhood she considers an important connection to her heritage.

“This is the part of Edmonton that reminds me of my heritage. This is the place where I feel I belong,” Lennon said.

She said other members of the community, particularly seniors, have told her they are afraid to go out after dark.

“I have also heard the children, adults, seniors who live outside Chinatown, they do not feel safe to come to Chinatown anymore,” Lennon said.

Karl Miu, with the Edmonton Chinatown and Area Business Association, said the drop-offs are continuing and it is time for the provincial government to take action.

At a news conference Thursday, Edmonton-South West MLA Nathan Ip said the situation is affecting both the community and those being released from custody.

“We’ve been left dealing with the consequences of a system that is failing both the community and the businesses and the people being released,” Ip said.

Members of Edmonton’s Chinese community say the problem is not new, and that detainees and offenders have been dropped off in Chinatown for years.

“Now we see this video evidence, we see what is happening in our community, we see how this has expanded and multiplied and it has reached the level that this is a crisis that needs to be addressed,” said NDP MLA David Shepherd, the party’s public safety critic.

“First, an immediate end to detainee releases in Chinatown and anywhere in Alberta by any law enforcement agency unless a direct connection to services has been made in advance and those services are open and accessible,” Shepherd said.

The Opposition is also calling for expanded reintegration supports for people leaving remand custody and for reintegration plans to be required before high-risk and vulnerable people are released.

In a statement to Global News, Arthur Green, press secretary for Alberta’s public safety minister, said the government has met with Chinatown residents and service providers and is taking steps to address their concerns.

“Our government has met with Chinatown residents and providers and have taken their concerns seriously, taking concrete steps to make their community safer,” Green said.

He pointed to the relocation of the Edmonton Remand Centre from Chinatown and said the province is implementing dedicated system navigators in correctional centres to help co-ordinate releases and connect people with housing and other supports.

Green also criticized the NDP’s record in government, accusing the party of “fearmongering about disorder” after three supervised consumption sites were established in Chinatown during its time in office.

“Albertans don’t need lectures from the NDP about Chinatown’s challenges — in fact, if the NDP had been paying any attention, they would know our government is already taking real action to address them,” Green said.

The government said Edmonton’s Navigation and Support Centre, located in Chinatown, has helped more than 12,000 Albertans access supports and made more than 75,000 connections to services, including affordable housing and identification supports.

Green also said the province announced an investment of more than $30 million this summer to add more than 400 treatment, housing and stabilization beds in the Edmonton area.

Business owners say improving public safety and revitalizing Chinatown’s economy go hand in hand.

Entrepreneur Wilson Wong called on the province to work with the community.

“We’re asking the province to partner with us as an investment in Alberta’s economy, culture and next generation of entrepreneurs,” Wong said.

Twisters has had a lasting impact on Daisy Edgar-Jones, but not necessarily in the way that she wanted.

During a recent episode of Jake Shane‘s Therapuss podcast, the actress revealed that she might be “slightly deaf” in one ear after shooting the 2024 action-adventure thriller, directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

“I think I still am slightly deaf in my left ear because there was so much debris and wind that was entering from a sharp left,” she said. “It was a windy shoot. It was quite ironic because we were shooting in Oklahoma and often would have to shut down filming because of an actual wind storm, to then recreate a wind storm once it’s passed. It was a wild experience.”

Twisters, which served as a standalone sequel, came nearly two decades after 1996’s Twister. The film followed Kate Carter (Edgar-Jones), a retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist who is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies. There, she meets Tyler Owens (played by Glen Powell), a content creator who posts his storm-chasing adventures.

The Sense and Sensibility star definitely wasn’t afraid to get in on the action, previously telling The Hollywood Reporter that she got “a bit addicted” to doing stunts after filming Twisters.

“It was so stunt heavy and I’d never done really proper stunts, so I was so curious to see how they were going to achieve a lot of the action sequences, but I’m a bit addicted now, I’ve got the bug,” Edgar-Jones said in 2024. “It was so much fun. I mean we had a phenomenal stunt department who really just helped to immerse us in it, also keep us safe. Most of the stunts were sort of being battered by wind, rain and debris so it was definitely an interesting filming experience.”

Twisters has had a lasting impact on

Halle Berry took fierce aim at her ex-husband Olivier Martinez’s alleged parenting of their son Maceo amid their bitter custody war, according to a new court filing.

Earlier this month, Martinez, 60, obtained a temporary domestic violence restraining order against Berry, 60, after accusing her of ‘physically abusing’ the 13-year-old ‘by jumping on him and choking him’ in a September 26 incident. Berry has denied all of the allegations.

In a legal filing made in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday and reviewed by The Daily Mail, Berry claimed that her ex has repeatedly inserted himself into ongoing issues regarding Maceo’s schooling and therapy, obstructing progress in all areas.

She told the court that Martinez has inappropriately gotten Maceo involved in the ongoing custody battle and undermined her efforts with the teen, as per the filing.

Berry said that the court should award her ‘sole legal custody over matters relating to Maceo’s education, healthcare, and mental-health treatment,’ and ‘extend [her] tie-breaking authority indefinitely.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for both parties for further comment on the story.

The aforementioned requests would be ‘so that necessary interventions can be implemented without continued delay, conflict, and harm to the child,’ Berry said in the court filing.

Attorneys for Berry said in the filing that the ongoing ‘case has been and continues to be about Olivier’s efforts to use manipulation, alienation, and litigation to obstruct necessary interventions for Maceo and to circumvent orders.’

Berry’s legal team said in the filing that it was not merely Berry’s ‘characterization of events,’ as Martinez’s ‘custom and practice is confirmed by numerous judicial findings, court orders, and sanctions.’

Berry said in the court filing that Maceo’s ‘behavioral issues at school have significantly escalated’ since the temporary restraining order had been issued earlier this month.

In the filing, Berry pointed to letters submitted to the court by administrators from Maceo’s school indicating that he ‘has become increasingly oppositional, defiant, and disrespectful toward both peers and authority figures.’

Berry added in the legal filing that the school officials have said ‘Maceo has been more disruptive at school, harassed a younger student, used inappropriate language, thrown objects at peers, been disciplined with a week of detention and unilaterally announced that he is’ switching schools.

Berry said in the legal filing that, with Martinez’s encouragement, Maceo has been reinforced to believe he has a say in ‘decisions regarding his education, health, extracurricular activities, and general welfare.’

In addition to asking for sole custody, Berry has requested the court authorize an arrangement in which Maceo would attend therapy sessions for a year, ‘both individual and conjoint,’ with a therapist of her choosing.

Berry in the legal filing requested that both parties ‘be ordered to forthwith communicate exclusively via Our Family Wizard,’ a co-parenting app. She asked the court for conditions in which each party would check the app once a day, and send no more than one message daily in cases of no emergency.

For messages deemed ‘URGENT,’ Berry asked the court that the responding party reply within a five-hour span.

The filing from the Oscar-winner also included declarations from her fiancé Van Hunt, 56, daughter Nahla, 18, and administrators from Maceo’s school.

Berry and Martinez had been married from 2013-2015, finalizing their split in 2023.

Martinez’s lawyer Patrick Baghdaserians told The Daily Mail on Thursday his team was ‘pleased with the court’s ruling’ on Wednesday permitting Maceo to testify, adding, ‘We believe it was necessary.’

On Tuesday, Baghdaserians told The Daily Mail that his ‘client believes that it is in Maceo’s best interest for the Court to have all the information regarding what happened at [Berry’s] home on the night of September 26, 2026.’

Prahaar Movie Review: There’s a tendency to mistake the importance of a real-life story for the quality of its cinematic retelling. With Prahaar – The Ujjwal Nikam Story, the weight of the subject and the significance of the man at its centre may invite a certain reverence, making any criticism of the filmmaking seem misplaced and almost blasphemous.

This is a man who has prosecuted cases such as the 2003 Gateway of India blast, the 2010 German Bakery blast in Pune, the 1993 Bombay blasts, Gulshan Kumar’s murder, Shakti Mills gang rape and, of course, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. But the importance of his story doesn’t automatically translate into compelling cinema. The film has intent but heavily suffers due to a bumpy screenplay.

Prahaar is all over the place, struggling to decide what it wants to focus on. Is it the terror attacks and the subsequent trials, Nikam’s family life, his complicated equation with his son or Ajmal Kasab’s background and life in Arthur Road Jail? By attempting to juggle all these threads, the film loses sight of its central narrative.

What emerges is a muddled mishmash of storylines that leaves you wondering what you’re supposed to invest in. That’s not to say the film is devoid of moments that move you to tears, fill you with rage or make you appreciate the sheer brilliance of its actors. But are a handful of powerful moments enough to make a good film? Seems unlikely.

Prahaar opens on the day of the 1993 Bombay blasts verdict. Having won the TADA case, Nikam remains remarkably equanimous even as those around him celebrate. “Kaam adhura reh gaya hai,” he says, refusing to rejoice before the entire terrorist network is exposed. Years later, as he attends his daughter’s wedding, a phone call shatters the celebrations. Mumbai is under attack.

The date is November 26, 2008. A series of coordinated shootings and bombings across the city leaves it reeling. Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive, becomes the face of the trial that follows, with Nikam entrusted with the responsibility of prosecuting him. Standing on the other side is Kazmi, who agrees to represent Kasab after the Mumbai Bar Association refuses to take up his defence.

What follows is a courtroom battle. Nikam insists on filing a single chargesheet, as it could lead him to Lashkar-e-Taiba and the entire network behind 26/11 and dismantle Kasab’s claim of being a juvenile. A press photographer, a senior nurse working at Cama Hospital and multiple cops appear as witnesses. But the most chilling and emotional testimony is from a ten-year-old survivor.

Prahaar also explores the personal cost of Nikam and Kazmi taking up opposing sides of the trial. While Nikam is dismissed by sections of the public as an ‘attention seeker’, Kazmi is branded a traitor for defending Kasab. In one particularly uncomfortable scene, Kazmi is insulted by another Muslim at a restaurant during Eid, in front of his own family and accused of bringing shame to their community.

Director Avinash Arun and writer Sumit Roy further capture the public outrage surrounding the trial, with people demanding Kasab’s immediate execution and growing impatient with what they perceive as the law’s slow pace in delivering justice. These are telling moments that capture the price of standing by one’s professional duty when public sentiment demands otherwise.

Importantly, Prahaar ensures that the narrative doesn’t devolve into mere bashing and targeting a religion or a country. In one of its most powerful and significant scenes, Nikam strikes up an unexpected conversation with Zulfiqar, a member of an official delegation from Islamabad. It’s food they bond over – bombil fry in Mumbai and haleem and galouti kebab in Islamabad.

Their exchange on politics, religion and the hatred fuelled by extremism makes a poignant, nuanced and humanist point – the fire you set in your neighbour’s home can eventually engulf your own. What follows is an unlikely friendship that transcends the animosity between the two countries. “Terrorists are not born but manufactured,” they say. The film largely holds on to its objectivity.

Despite these highlights, Prahaar struggles to stay afloat over its 2-hour and 21-minute runtime. The narrative is uneven and rarely gripping, often losing momentum at crucial junctures. The decision to explore Nikam’s personal and family life isn’t inherently problematic. The issue is how these portions are inserted between important scenes, disrupting the narrative flow.

Needless to say, they draw attention away from the central conflict. A mere acknowledgement of how his demanding career keeps him from spending time with his equally supportive family would have sufficed. Instead, the makers delve deep into his domestic life and a messy father-son equation marked by ego, leaving the screenplay unnecessarily bloated.

For instance, following a heart-wrenching sequence in which the ten-year-old girl testifies that Kasab shot her pregnant mother at CST, the film abruptly cuts to a sequence featuring Nikam and his wife in a hospital room and then to a flashback chronicling their love story. The tonal shift is jarring, diluting the emotional impact of an otherwise devastating moment.

The weak links are too many to ignore. As for the performances, Rajkummar Rao delivers a decent turn as Nikam. But it also raises a question – does an actor need to replicate every body-language cue and mannerism of the person he’s portraying? While he captures Nikam’s mannerisms well, the performance eventually feels too mechanical, making it difficult to connect with the man behind the persona.

The act also suffers from the way Nikam is written on paper, as a man with barely any visible vulnerabilities. The character feels too one-dimensional, leaving little room for the actor to bring out the complexities that might have made him more compelling. This is certainly not one of Rao’s more memorable performances.

Wamiqa Gabbi, as Nikam’s wife Jyoti, has little to do beyond trying to replicate the real person’s mannerisms. It’s a peripheral role that adds little to the narrative and does little to showcase her abilities as an actor. She almost feels like a narrative device to offer some relief from an otherwise tense film, rather than a character with any real depth or purpose of her own.

It is Jaideep Ahlawat who truly leaves an impact as Zulfiqar, despite limited screen time. As India and Pakistan are caught in a cycle of hostility, he emerges as a voice of reason, advocating dialogue over hatred and reminding us of the human cost of extremism. His moments with Rao are pure gold. Sikandar Kher as Kazmi is equally impressive.

But the absolute show stealer is Lalit Prabhakar, who delivers a remarkable act as Kasab. From the chilling smirk on his face as he kills people to the distress he experiences on learning that his mother has fallen ill, he captures the many shades of a man who is both a perpetrator of horrific violence and a product of indoctrination.

His fear upon seeing the bodies of his fellow terrorists and realising that he has been brainwashed into killing in the name of attaining jannat is particularly striking. It’s a layered, unsettling performance. In a scene inside the cell, he begins hallucinating, offering a glimpse into his deteriorating mental state. Prabhakar sheds all inhibitions in the sequence, delivering a raw, uninhibited performance.

In all honesty, Prahaar is a film that deserved to be told. It has its heart in the right place. It’s great material on paper. It wants to unsettle us. But the problem is that much of it gets lost under the weight of its own aspirations. Ultimately, it’s a film of powerful moments that never quite comes together as a compelling whole.

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan appear on vintage game shows in the retro music video for the “Expectations” remix, featuring appearances from musician David Byrne and producer Dan Nigro.

The clip, directed by Bardia Zeinali, shows Rodrigo and Roan (in her first-ever feature) appearing on sets clearly inspired by “Family Feud” and “Hollywood Squares.” Byrne appears as Johnny Johnson, host of the “Big Expectations” show, where he asks three Rodrigos in different outfits “a little bit how you got here.”

What follows is a trip to the different sets and a new “Expectations” verse from Roan, who shows up on the set of “Sister Squabble” to contend with Rodrigo in a “Family Feud” face-off. “I took her to a concert front row thought it’d be fun,” she sings. “Her hand moving up my skirt, no piercing on her tongue / She said she’d call me later, that was three weeks ago / Classic L.A. behavior, she could’ve just said no.”

Nigro, who produced “Expectations” along with Roan and Rodrigo’s albums, pops up at the end clutching a giant brick of a phone straight out of the 1990s. His appearance makes sense, as he produced the track and its parent album “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.”

Speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe on Thursday afternoon, Roan and Rodrigo explained why they teamed for the remix. “This is obviously my first feature,” said Roan. “I’ve never done this before, so it feels perfect to me. I don’t know. I feel like it represents a generation of songwriters that are just really thinking about their lyrics. I felt like with this song, I was like, ‘Wow, it’s so cool that she is putting a pretty difficult concept within the pop song,’ which is my favorite pop songs ever.”

Rodrigo explained that she had asked Byrne to appear in the video but was a “bit sheepish” about making the request. “I always feel shy asking people for favors, but he was so down,” she said. “He showed up the entire day. He had a character that he had built out and he made this Johnny Johnson character. There’s so many outtakes we have of him just improvising and riffing and he was so into it. And I was like, ‘Gosh, David, maybe he should be an actor too one of these days.” He’s very multi-talented.”

Beyond sharing Nigro as a producer, Rodrigo and Roan go back some years, as the latter supported the former on both her “Sour” and “Guts” tours. Roan recently performed at Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields Festival in late August as part of an all-female lineup that featured Doechii, Rachel Chinouriri, Garbage, the Breeders and more.

The final chapter in the WandaVision trilogy has begun, as VisionQuest is now streaming on Disney+.

The latest Marvel series follows Paul Bettany’s “White Vision” after his memories were restored during the events of WandaVision.

“What’s different about Vision right now is that Red Vision gave Vision all of his memories, including the memories from within the Hex. But White Vision is having real difficulty connecting to them,” Bettany explained last year.

“So he has the memories, but he doesn’t have the emotions and the feelings, and I think that’s what the journey is. White Vision’s journey during the show is about his attempt to connect to those memories and who he was… but with lasers!”

The future of DC Universe TV shows gets a major update.

The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate is building out James Gunn’s superhero franchise across the big and small screens, as various iconic heroes and villains come to life. As the fall season is about to take viewers to Gotham City in the R-rated Clayface movie, many are still wondering what is in store for the television side of the franchise.

Peter Safran, who serves as co-CEO alongside Gunn at DC Studios, recently spoke with IGN about what the strategy is for DCU TV going forward, including whether or not Lanterns season 2 is something they are considering. To begin with, he confirmed with a simple “no” that a second season has been greenlit. He elaborated that “we’ll see what happens with Lanterns Season Two. If, I think, the collective group of HBO and DC and Chris Mundy and the team all feel like we’ve got something that is a worthy successor to quite a beloved first season of television, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see more.”

As far as future projects go on the small screen from DC Studios, Safran added that “we’re obviously in production on Gorilla Grodd right now, we have a number of other properties that we’re really excited about that we’re in development on. The episodic world is always going to be a really important part of our overall slate. It’s a great way to tell stories that need more real estate than a feature film can offer you, and it’s a great way to introduce characters that we then bring into the feature world. And I think that Aaron Pierre and John Stewart are perfect examples of that.” He also teased that “audiences will see him next summer” in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie, and how “it’s really important to us in continuing to tell aspects of the story that we’re not telling in the feature film world so there’s more to come.”

The DC Studios co-head was asked what project he thinks will start shooting after The People V. Gorilla Grodd. Safran made it clear that “there are a couple that are vying for that spot, but we haven’t firmly committed to what the next one will be in either film or television. We have a pretty robust slate of animation that’s all going forward right now but, on the live-action side, it’s a little bit TBD.”

One of the big animated TV series that is in the works is the Mister Miracle show, which recently revealed its two leading stars, as Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis have been tapped to voice Scott Free and Big Barda, respectively. Creature Commandos season 2 is also in production, although HBO Max has not announced a release date for it yet.

Back in January 2023, when Gunn and Safran revealed the upcoming DCU movies and TV shows that are part of the slate, a handful of live-action dramas were announced to be in various stages of development. One of the titles included a Wonder Woman prequel series, Paradise Lost, set prior to Diana Prince’s birth.

A Booster Gold live-action series was also announced, but is currently being redeveloped after Davin Jenkins’ pilot was rejected. As they are searching for a new creative team on the Michael Jon Carter-centric show, Jeremy Carver and Christal Henry were hired to develop Viola Davis’ Waller spinoff for Amanda Waller, which has also been progressing more slowly than expected.

Lanterns season 1 is available for streaming on HBO Max.

The future of DC Universe TV shows

Microsoft is reportedly polling Xbox Insider users about making future Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, Diablo, PHYSINT and Minecraft games Xbox console exclusives, but the survey’s broadest hypothetical specifically leaves out Call of Duty.

Xbox Survey Tests Exclusivity for Major Franchises

Insider Gaming reports that the survey asks users to consider different exclusivity scenarios and how they would respond. In the most sweeping version, every future title from an Xbox-developed franchise except Call of Duty would be exclusive to Xbox consoles, with PC unaffected as described in the question.

The question asks whether players would buy an Xbox or move to PC in that situation. Its wording sets out the hypothetical directly: “Imagine it was announced that all future title releases from every XBOX-developed gaming franchise except Call of Duty will be console-exclusive to XBOX,” the reported survey question reads.

Minecraft gets a more specific scenario. Existing games would no longer be sold on PlayStation or Nintendo consoles, and those versions would receive no new content updates; people who already own the games would keep their content, while nothing would change on PC. That is a description of a survey proposal, not an announced plan.

Call of Duty Is Explicitly Carved Out

The Call of Duty exception is notable because the survey’s most expansive option does not apply the same rule to every Xbox franchise. It signals that Microsoft is testing reactions to a selective approach, but does not confirm what platform policy the company will choose or establish a separate Call of Duty commitment.

Gameplay scene from Call of Duty – Image: Call of Duty® / Steam

The Minecraft wording also distinguishes between ending future availability and removing access from existing owners: “For Minecraft only, existing titles would no longer be available for purchase on PlayStation or Nintendo consoles, and would not receive any new content updates. However, there is no impact to any of the existing titles or content you already own. Nothing changes on PC in this announcement.”

A Test, Not a Platform Announcement

The survey lands amid a shift in Xbox’s platform approach. Insider Gaming describes an earlier everything is an Xbox push to reach players across platforms, including Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation 5, followed by a stronger emphasis on exclusives such as Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution. The reported Forza Horizon 6 release on PlayStation 5 offers another point of contrast with that move toward exclusivity.

No release date or exclusivity decision accompanies the survey. Insider Gaming says Xbox is seeking profitability in fiscal year 2027 and will continue tracking the story, leaving the survey’s answers and any resulting policy change unconfirmed.

Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help complete “The Batman Part II” while director Matt Reeves is on hiatus dealing with a personal matter, Variety has confirmed.

“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on ‘The Batman Part 2,’” a studio rep said in a statement. “Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.”

Soderbergh said in his own statement, “I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was stunning; it was intentional, specific and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

Warner Bros. and DC Studios announced “The Batman Part II” production pause in early October, stating that Reeves temporarily stepped away from the project to handle a “family matter.”

“Production on ‘The Batman Part II’ has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” a rep said in a statement at the time. “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

Soderbergh is the Oscar-winning director best known for films “Traffic,” “Erin Brockovich,” “Sex, Lies, and Videotape and “Ocean’s Eleven.” His most recent releases include “The Christophers,” “Black Bag,” “Presence” and “John Lennon: The Last Interview.”

The highly anticipated “Batman” sequel has experienced several delays since it was announced at CinemaCon 2022. The original release date was set for Oct. 2, 2026, before Warner Bros. delayed it to Oct. 1, 2027. In June, the film was pushed again to February 2028. Reeves’ first “Batman” was released in March 2022.

Robert Pattinson returns as the Caped Crusader in “The Batman Part II.” Other cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.

The whole thing overall was very intense, and he’s a very intense person, so the combination of both…I kind of blacked out, in a way. I think I had a panic attack. When we sat down, it was even more intense for me because I was like, Oh God, what do we talk about? We just talked for 10 days.

He kind of came off a little more intense and wasn’t picking up that I was really nervous. I just kept saying, “Oh, this is so weird. This is so weird.” When I got out of there, I was incredibly overwhelmed, and I was like, I gotta go, I gotta go. I genuinely regret that. He deserves better.

Was there anything about him, specifically, that threw you off in that moment beyond your own internal battle?

It was not about his looks. That’s so black and white. I’m not like that. I think it was the intensity. Through a wall, you obviously don’t get that as much. I knew he was theatrical, but then just putting it all together, it was a lot in that moment. We had just gotten engaged and gone through this incredible connection, but the physical was not matching up to me in that moment. It kind of freaked me out. There’s no other way to explain it.

When he said the guys called him Kennedy, and you say, “More like Mitt Romney.” What did that mean?

He kind of looks like he would be like one of the Romney sons. I thought it was cocky when he said that, and I thought he could maybe be taken down a notch. I was like, Who says that? And then brings it up again? Like, of course, I had heard that. Like, I knew.

Watching [everything] back, I was like, Oh my God, this guy thinks he’s like so attractive, calling himself Jude Law. I kind of want to talk about me a little bit. What do you think about me? He said all these really nice things in his interview. Like, “Oh, she’s everything I could have imagined.” But I wanted to hear that, especially after a proposal that wasn’t that romantic. I was like, Maybe this is the moment that I will get this romantic thing, and it will be about me. And it really wasn’t about me, and that also threw me off. Like, Oh my God, this is not my person.

Jenna Ortega hopes that her new film, the dystopian sci-fi “Klara and the Sun,” can remind people to live in the moment in the age of AI and all-consuming technology.

“I think we gotta put our focus on one another and put down the computers and phones,” the star told Variety on the red carpet at the movie’s world premiere at London Film Festival on Thursday night.

Ortega, wearing a stunning yellow lace dress and hair piece, added: “Remember to be present and to appreciate people while they’re standing right in front of you.”

Based on Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling 2021 novel of the same name, “Klara and the Sun” is set in a future where advances in genetic engineering have divided humans into strict social classes. Ortega plays Klara, an artificial android companion who is purchased for an ailing girl named Josie (Mia Tharia). “Klara and the Sun” is directed by “Thor” helmer Taika Waititi and also stars Amy Adams as Josie’s mother, Aran Murphy (son of Cillian Murphy), Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi and more.

Waititi, Adams, Murphy and Lyonne all walked the London Film Festival red carpet on Thursday night, alongside Waititi’s wife Rita Ora, author Ishiguro and a surprise appearance from Florence Pugh, who stunned in a blue floral gown with statement sleeves. Pugh enthusiastically greeted Ortega and Adams before they all posed for photos together alongside producer Rachel Forman.

Standing alongside Ortega, Adams added that everyone she’s spoken to has gotten “something different” out of the film. “That, to me, is a really successful film that communicates something different to each viewer. So I like hearing what people get out of it,” she said.

Ortega clarified that though Klara is an “artificial friend,” she doesn’t work like the AI that we know today.

“AI I guess pulls all this information from the internet and Klara gets all her information from the real world,” she said. “So that’s a little bit different. She’s kind of like a toddler in a sense. Playing her specifically in this film was really interesting because Taika wanted a more human approach, so he didn’t want to do movement that was too robotic, maybe more sort of clumsy and unknowing.”

Waititi echoed Ortega in saying that the film’s message is to “put the phone down.”

“I would just like people to remember what friendship is, connect with people and just be,” he said. “Just be in the moment.”

Ishiguro acknowledged that, since his novel came out in 2021, the world’s awareness and attitude about AI has changed greatly.

“This film doesn’t address a lot of the anxieties that you and I may have right now about where we’re going with the technology. I mean, I think quite rightly, it’s really come center stage,” he said. “I’m aware that this film is coming out into a very different world to the one that my novel came out in five years ago, and I don’t know how that will change people’s expectations or how people look at things. But I’ll say that this isn’t another film about how an AI machine seems to be nice and then becomes sinister and ends up killing all the nice people in the film. It’s not that sort of story.”

Ishiguro is wading more into film, confirming to Variety that he’s working on a new project with Tim Burton, for which he penned an original script. Though Burton and Ishiguro have a mutual friend in “Wednesday” star Ortega, he said she’s not the one who introduced them.

“I thought this was supposed to be a big secret!” Ishiguro said. “No, Jenna didn’t introduce us. Tim lives quite near where I live in North London, and I was dropping in on him in his very strange and wacky and beautiful house. I mean, it looks like a Tim Burton set. And we started to talk about a project and I wrote a script on spec. We decided to just do it privately between the two of us, and then take it to people.”

He added that it’s not a “war film,” saying: “Genre-wise, it’s very hard to pigeonhole. It’s a Tim Burton film!”

“Klara and the Sun” is set to hit theaters via Sony Pictures on Oct. 23.

After a solid opening, Wonka‘s the Golden Ticket jumped up to the top overall spot in Nielsen’s streaming ratings in its second week. Netflix’s East of Eden also had a good start.

The Golden Ticket, a Netflix competition show based on the world of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (and featuring an AI-generated voice modeled on the film’s star, Gene Wilder), drew 1.08 billion minutes of watch time for the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4. That’s a 26 percent improvement on the show’s opening week, when it finished fifth overall.

East of Eden, a limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel, finished second among original shows and third overall at 782 million viewing minutes. It premiered Oct. 1. Apple TV’s Ted Lasso (750 million minutes) fell off a bit a week before its season four finale, declining by 11 percent from 842 million minutes a week earlier.

The Great British Baking Show (486 million minutes) returned to the charts a week after its latest season premiered. Neagley, Reacher, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story and Lioness all hung onto spots in the top 10 originals as well.

Toy Story 5, the previous week’s overall top title, fell off by about 55 percent but still led the movie chart with 687 million minutes of viewing.

In the wake of the tragic events of 9/11, ordinary citizens stepped up to the plate and became heroes. Dale Fabrigar‘s dramatic short, Boatlift 9/11, tells one such story.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Captain Jan (Sofia Helin) and her daughter, Britt (Preslea Elliott), are working their tugboat in New York Harbor when they witness two airliners slam into the Twin Towers. Not knowing exactly what has happened, they know they have to head toward the danger. As Britt gathers bottles of water, they spot hundreds of people waiting for rescue on the dock.

When they arrive, Britt starts handing out bottles of water, but against her mother’s judgment, she begins inviting people on board. Knowing the tugboat isn’t meant for passengers, Captain Jan tries to limit how many people board, since it can only carry so many safely. Then the first tower crashes down, sending a wall of concrete dust and debris over the people on the dock and the tugboat.

Passengers lean over a tugboat’s rail to pull a man from the foggy harbor in Boatlift 9/11.

“When they arrive, Britt starts handing out bottles of water, but against her mother’s judgment, she begins inviting people on board.”

The film’s title, Boatlift 9/11, refers to the largest civilian maritime operation in history, which brought 500,000 New Yorkers to safety. While celebrating the bravery of average Americans, filmmaker Dale Fabrigar, along with writers Tricia Aurand and Marc Paoletti, shows that the operation was more than just picking people up and heading to New Jersey. Their boats could have been overwhelmed. The survivors could have panicked. The dust and debris made it almost impossible to see or breathe. Many obstacles could have led to disaster, but these brave souls came together to save as many as they could.

Yes, director Fabrigar performs a little movie magic, filming on a boat while a CG disaster unfolds in the background. These effects don’t look cheap, and they give Sofia Helin and Preslea Elliott a convincing world to play against. As Britt, Elliott brings out a young person’s desire to save as many people as possible. Helin, as Captain Jan, grounds the rescue in the logical, practical details of saving lives without putting everyone at risk.

Boatlift 9/11 is a thrilling tribute to the everyday heroes who turned their boats toward Lower Manhattan when the country needed them most. Fabrigar focuses on the human side of disaster, not the spectacle. Boatlift 9/11 captures both the courage and the hard choices that made the largest maritime evacuation in history possible.

Do eyelid-tightening creams really work?

If you have concerns in the eye area, such as sagging, fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s-feet, Dr. Magovern notes that eye-tightening creams can help address them over time. She recommends opting for an eye cream that contains hydrating and plumping ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and peptides, to soften and smooth creases and uneven texture. And just an FYI: You can use undereye creams on your upper eyelid area too.

That said, there are active ingredients you may want to avoid using on that ultrafragile skin. Dr. Magovern recommends avoiding alcohol or salicylic acid on the eyelids. “These ingredients may irritate the sensitive skin around the eyes,” she says, and recommends testing a product on your wrist before putting it on your eyelids as an extra precaution.

What is the best treatment for tightening eyelid skin?

“For the treatment of tightening and firming (without the use of Botox), look for retinol and peptides, which stimulate collagen production, and hydrating ingredients that plump and strengthen the skin by drawing water in, such as hyaluronic acid. Most eye creams are ideally used one to two times daily for tightening,” says Rachel Nazarian, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in NYC.

How can I make my upper eyelids look younger?

“Consistent use of a gentle retinoid can help refine texture and soften fine lines, while lightweight, hydrating eye creams keep the skin looking supple without weighing it down,” says Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. She shares that daily sunscreen application is essential as well, since eyelids are particularly vulnerable to UV-driven thinning and laxity.

“For more noticeable concerns like crepiness or early sagging, in-office treatments such as laser resurfacing or tightening procedures can make a meaningful difference,” she says.

Can you tighten hooded eyes without a procedure?

It is possible to tighten, but keep expectations in check. “Hydration can help refine the skin quality, A gentle retinoid can support collagen over time, and lightweight, well-formulated eye creams can smooth and hydrate so the area looks less crepey or heavy,” says Dr. Engelman. She also suggests incorporating a caffeine-based product into your routine to temporarily reduce puffiness, which can make the lid appear more lifted. “What you can do is optimize the skin so it looks firmer and more refreshed.”

Should mature skin use eye cream?

According to Pooja Rambhia, MD and board-certified dermatologist based in New Jersey, eye cream will make a huge difference in your daily regimen. “The skin around the eyes is thin and has few oil glands, and it gets thinner and drier with age. Switching to a richer [eye cream] formula with ceramides, peptides, and hyaluronic acid can make a visible difference in crepiness,” she says.

Can more sleep help tighten skin around the eyes?

While getting more sleep is great, it won’t necessarily help with skin firmness, says Dr. Nazarian. She does note that not getting enough sleep can actually cause premature aging, so sleep is good, but not without a topical skincare regimen too.

How do eye firming creams compare to Botox?

While eye firming creams can soften fine lines, very deep wrinkles usually require in-office procedures. “Neuromodulators (like Botox) work best for crow’s feet that appear when you smile. Lines that are visible at rest typically respond best to laser resurfacing and microneedling,” says Dr. Rambhia.

How we evaluated eyelid-firming creams

We tested eyelid firming creams by evaluating ingredients, texture, and efficacy. We looked for formulas that contained hyaluronic acid (to hydrate), peptides (to soften), collagen (to add resilience), and retinol (to minimize lines). The ones we chose had silky textures, absorbed easily, and didn’t pill or leave any greasy residue behind. The ones that made this list did a great job at actually minimizing our testers’ fine lines and wrinkles, making the undereye area more firm, resilient, and smooth.

A roughneck sailor named Mitt (Josh Brolin) delivers a drunken sermon to his son, Jay (Austin Abrams), whom he treats like a scrawny disappointment. The Inuit, Mitt says, use every part of a whale as food, tools and cultural sacrament. Add family therapy to that list.

Brian Duffield’s intriguingly deep “Whalefall,” based on the 2023 novel by recent Pulitzer winner Daniel Kraus, opens with abusive Mitt’s death by suicide. In bitterness and grief, Jay goes scuba diving to recover his father’s body and gets swallowed by a sperm whale. Confinement gives Jay time to think. But not much time — his oxygen tank only contains an hour of air.

Is that his dad’s voice Jay hears gurgling from the beast’s belly? Or does he just have the bends?

Adapted by Duffield and Kraus, “Whalefall” is a heart-tugger tangled in a survival tale — or, arguably, a biologically accurate spin on “Pinocchio.” The emotions are real; the sentimental orchestral score by Joseph Trapanese goes overboard. (Knuckle-tatted Mitt seems like he’d prefer a raunchy sea shanty.) Yet, this tense adventure makes a strong case that bad parents can still teach good lessons, even when a kid strives to live in opposition to their folks.

In scenes at Jay’s childhood home, his mother (Elisabeth Shue) and older sisters (Jane Levy and Emily Rudd) have a lightness that implies how much harder Mitt was on his only son, aggravated that he’d spawned not a mini-me but a mini-meh. Loner Jay has grown up to shun his father’s interests — or anyone’s help, period — an independence that, should he survive, he may come to realize isn’t so different from his dad after all.

But first, he’s got to get out of these guts. Having been gobbled up like a meal worm, Jay dredges up flashbacks of his father’s lectures in whale anatomy. Meanwhile, the film works to wring out a tear, occasionally squeezing too hard, but earning several sad sighs of recognition.

Set off the California coast near Monterey Bay, “Whalefall” is shot by Aaron Morton to look realistic. This Pacific Ocean is the true one: silty, cold, gray and hostile. As Jay waddles into the water, the waves seem to want to shove the reedy young man back to shore. Once he’s managed to hurl himself past the surf to rest atop an underwater cliff, the darkness below is as scary as if we’d regressed into primordial prey.

The whale attack is a tragedy of happenstance and filmed as chaotically as if it were happening to the camera. It’d be nice to see more of it, but at least we feel the visceral terror of a whammy of sonar, a lashing from its muscular tongue and the velocity that hurls Jay from the mouth to the throat, then squashes him into its stomach.

There’s seat-shaking violence in how the whale breaches the surface and slams its weight back down (the crafty sound design is by James Miller) and body horror in its claustrophobic, spongy inner chambers. Which wet hole is the way out — and which leads to a pool of skin-melting digestive acid? Sure, in space no one can hear you scream. But underwater, we grit our teeth at Jay’s every fluttering breath.

I read “Whalefall” when it was first published and couldn’t imagine how the book could be turned into a film. Everything seemed against it, from the heavy narration to the creature’s dark insides and the lead’s isolated gloom. At least “127 Hours” had lovely shots of Utah.

Some challenges are fixable. The whale’s gullet is flickeringly lit by a bioluminescent jellyfish that Jay sort of befriends. To the film’s credit, every animal acts like it has as much right to exist as this out-of-his-ecosystem human. An aggressive squid is so angry to be eaten that it made me regret sampling live sashimi in Koreatown.

Other pitfalls just have to be forgiven, like when Abrams has to explain how he’s feeling with an air hose between his teeth. The script wisely cuts back on some of the book’s cuteness, only sparingly making Jay refer to a makeshift tool by its pet name, “Beaky.” Still, he’s compelled to say something every so often and each time we want to scream that he’s wasting his precious oxygen. A couple seemingly significant lines of dialogue come out garbled through the mouthpiece. I say seemingly because I honestly couldn’t tell you what they were, but the tenor felt important.

Abrams is well-cast in the role, not only because last month’s “Resident Evil” proved he can hold the screen pretty much by himself. Though he began acting as a teenager with stints on “The Walking Dead” and “Euphoria” and continues to get cast as characters younger than he is, he’s never had that overly polished child-performer charm. Instead, he comes across as scruffy and vulnerable — even as the spooked junkie in “Weapons,” in which he seemed to mimic a cartoon cat. Check him out alongside Ben Stiller in Mike White’s underseen 2017 anxiety dramedy “Brad’s Status” if you haven’t, and you may sense what I did: a precocious talent biding his time until his roles grew up. This fall feels like his graduation party.

Given the compressed running time, the film has more memories of Mitt appearing practical and wise than of being a bastard. To make that point, it leans on one awful boat trip scene that starts with Mitt smashing a beer can on his forehead until it bleeds. We get more shivers from a glimpse of a very young Jay nervously calling his father “Sir” than we do from Brolin barking caricature-style that “There’s more to existence than fun!” Occasionally, the blunt-headed whale seems to resemble Brolin himself.

I’m writing this on what would have been my dad’s birthday, a kind man who passed away when I was roughly Jay’s age. He was no Mitt and I don’t believe in ghosts. Nevertheless, I, too, am aware of my father’s voice. Sometimes our rational understanding of life and death bumps into a seemingly impossible presence. That’s the big idea churning under “Whalefall’s” surface.

One of the biggest questions leading up to the events of Avengers: Doomsday is the status of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye.

A constant presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Hawkeye has suited up for every previous Avengers adventure.

The last time we saw him, he had taken down the Tracksuit Mafia in New York and was mentoring Kate Bishop.

Now, it looks like Renner is getting ready for his next adventure.

Here Come the West Coast Avengers?

Just hours after VisionQuest mentioned Hawkeye in its first episode, Renner took to Instagram and shared a collection of West Coast Avengers comics.

For those who don’t know, Vision formed the West Coast Avengers during the Secret Wars arc when most of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were pulled away to Battleworld.

Over the years, the team has included Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man, Tigra, Mockingbird, Firebird, U.S. Agent, and War Machine among its members.

Why It Makes Sense

The decision to create the West Coast Avengers is interesting for numerous reasons.

For starters, the comic series laid the groundwork for the romance between Vision and Scarlet Witch, as well as the creation, death, and revival of their children.

Additionally, creating a West Coast Avengers would give a new group of heroes a chance to shine.

Based on the current MCU roster, Hawkeye, Shang-Chi, Kate Bishop, Wonder Man, Moon Knight, U.S. Agent, and Vision would all be natural fits.

For Hawkeye in particular, the West Coast Avengers would provide a chance to mentor the next generation.

While it remains to be seen whether the West Coast Avengers will actually assemble, things seem to be heading that way.

Perhaps we will know more by the time VisionQuest comes to an end.

Peacemaker holds a unique place in DC lore, as its first season was released at the end of the “Zack Snyder era,” and Season 2 arrived as part of DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Season 2 was the first live-action streaming series released as part of the new DCU continuity, coming to HBO Max just over a month after Superman debuted in theaters as the DCU’s first new movie. Led by John Cena as Christopher Smith, Season 2 fully integrated the character into a wider universe, while also following up on the story established in 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

Part of that story included Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., who was first introduced in Superman before serving as a main antagonist in Peacemaker Season 2. In the streaming series, Flag sought revenge against Peacemaker for killing his son, Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr., during The Suicide Squad‘s third act while working with ARGUS and Lex Luthor to access a dimensional portal. In the Season 2 finale, Flag got what he wanted, throwing Peacemaker through that portal and exiling him to a planet called Salvation. This made him one of the DCU’s most hated characters, although Grillo recently took that designation in stride.

Speaking at the red-carpet event for Tulsa King Season 4 with MovieWeb, Frank Grillo addressed the idea of playing one of the DCU’s most-hated characters, Rick Flag Sr. Getting into a fun exchange over this question, Grillo responded that Peacemaker “killed [Flag’s] son,” justifying Flag’s brutal actions against Cena’s titular hero:

MovieWeb: “Are you doing ok being one of the most hated characters in the DCU right now?”

Grillo: “Hated? Why am I hated?!”

MovieWeb: “What you did to Peacemaker!”

Grillo: “Peacemaker killed my son! Let me help you here. He killed, murdered my son, my child.”

MovieWeb: “He feels really bad for it, though.”

Grillo: “Whose problem [is that]? Is it mine or yours? You’re crazy.”

Clearly, Grillo has plenty of reason to agree with Flag’s rationale for his actions, as losing a son would send anyone into a rage and make them want vengeance. Making light of the matter in the interview, the Peacemaker star offered a sound explanation for why he went after Christopher Smith, not caring much about how bad Smith felt about what he did to the younger Flag.

Now, Grillo is set to return to the DCU next year for a role in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, bringing Rick Flag Sr. back to the big screen on Jul. 9, 2027. While his specific role is still a mystery, Grillo has teased that he will have plenty to do in this movie, which will pit Superman and Lex Luthor as allies when the all-powerful Brainiac threatens to make Earth part of his collection of planets. Whether he eventually gets a rematch with Peacemaker is still up in the air, but Grillo seems set for an extended future in this franchise.

Both seasons of Peacemaker are streaming on HBO Max. Grillo will next be seen in Season 4 of Tulsa King on Paramount+ (starting on Oct. 16, 2026), playingBill Bevilaqua.

Peacemaker holds a unique place in DC

WWE 2K26 is getting a special collaboration DLC pack which sees Street Fighter action figures being added to the game.

Mattel first launched its WWE Elite Collection X Street Fighter action figures in 2025, which features WWE superstars dressed as Street Fighter characters.

To date, there have been four series of these figures, and now a selection of them are being added to the game as playable characters.

They’ll be arriving in the WWE 2K26 X Street Fighter Elite Pack, which will be a separate paid DLC pack not included in any existing bundles or premium editions of the game.

The pack, which will be available from October 28, contains playable versions of the five following crossover action figures:

  • The Rock ‘Final Boss’ as M. Bison
  • Rey Mysterio as Ryu
  • Bianca Belair as Cammy
  • Ultimate Warrior as Blanka
  • Dominik Mysterio as Ken

Rather than simply reskinned versions of the existing wrestlers, each character will have their own entrance music and video, and will have their own movesets featuring Street Fighter special moves including the Shinku Hadoken, Psycho Crusher, Spiral Arrow, Electric Thunder and Shoryuken.

As well as the five superstars, the pack will also include 15 extra create-a-superstar parts from numerous Street Fighter characters, including M. Bison, Ryu, Akuma, Vega and Chun-Li.

VGC’s WWE 2K26 review called it the best entry in the series to date, but noted that it didn’t innovate too much over the 2K25 edition and still had room for improvement.

“WWE 2K26 offers another net gain over its predecessor, ensuring the series continues to evolve in a positive direction,” we said.

“While its new reversal system will initially divide players and the spectre of microtransactions continues to loom over MyFaction, the overall package introduces more quality-of-life features to ensure each of its numerous modes is better than it was last time.”
