The Star Wars universe is home to some of the best characters in pop culture. From Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader, to Yoda, Cad Bane, Boba Fett and Han Solo. However, one aspect that makes Star Wars shine above every other franchise in history, is its plethora of amazing, female characters. Princess Leia, Padmé Amidala, Mon Mothma, and of course, Ahsoka Tano, are just a handful of the incredibly inspiring female characters in Star Wars. To that end, here are the best female characters in Star Wars.

10 Fennec Shand

Lucasfilm

There are few bounty hunters as awesome as Fennec Shand. Her impressive sniper skills, unique design, and undying loyalty make her an excellent bounty hunter we would want on our side. Top that with a phenomenal performance by Ming-Na Wen, and whether she is lending her voice to Fennec Shand in an animated project, or doing her own stunts and fight choreography in the live-action Disney+ shows, Ming-Na Wen helps make Fennec Shand a fully inspiring and badass female character.

9 Mon Mothma

Mon Mothma in Andor.
Disney+

Many of the coolest characters in Star Wars are warriors, however, Mon Mothma, with little combat experience, is still an incredibly inspiring character. Her role in helping the rise of the Rebellion is hugely important, as she uses her political role on Coruscant in an attempt to overthrow the Empire. Mothma has always been a great character, yet it wasn’t until the hit Disney+ Star Wars series Andor that truly delved into her character, giving her many inspiring monologues.

8 Hera Syndulla

Hera Syndulla in Star Wars Rebels
Disney-ABC Domestic Television

This green Twi’lek is among the best pilots in the galaxy, and an important member of the loveable Ghost Crew from Star Wars: Rebels. After growing up on a war-torn Ryloth with her freedom-fighter father and mother, Hera has always known war, which sculpted her into the awesome character we love from Rebels.

We have been waiting on her live-action debut for years, and thankfully we finally get to see her character in live-action in the upcoming Ahsoka series, where Hera will be portrayed by the great Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The voice actor Vanessa Marshall has done a phenomenal job portraying Hera in the animated shows, but we are super excited to see what Winstead will bring to the role.

7 Rey

Rey in the Rise of Skywalker
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Rey is without a doubt one of the most hated characters in Star Wars. Does she deserve it? Absolutely not. Rey is a fantastic role model for young women, and one of the most powerful Jedi in Star Wars history. She constantly battles with her destiny and what is right and wrong, before ultimately choosing her own fate and saving the entire galaxy. Rey may have unjustifiably stolen the Skywalker name, however, that doesn’t detract from the inspiring character she is, and we can’t wait to see her again in her upcoming Jedi Order movie.

6 Asajj Ventress

Asajj Ventress
Disney Platform Distribution

The former Sith Asajj Ventress is an incredibly complex character, who has pretty much been betrayed by everyone she has ever worked with. Ventress was betrayed by Dooku, her former master, and Savage Opress, who she taught in the way of the Sith to help defeat Count Dooku. Later, Ventress was even framed for the bombing of the Jedi Temple. Ventress may not exactly be the most inspiring character due to her villainy, but her independence and deadly skills make for a deeply compelling character.

5 Sabine Wren

Sabine Wren in Star Wars Rebels
Disney-ABC Domestic Television

Sabine Wren is a deadly Mandalorian warrior and wielder of the Darksaber. She is an expert marksman, pilot, and hacker, who was trained to fight on Mandalore from a young age. We loved her character in Rebels, as she was an amazing beacon of hope for Mandalorians and the Ghost Crew.

Rebels similarly delved into her sweetness and creativity as an artist, who also formed a romantic relationship with the Jedi Ezra Bridger. Sabine also formed a compelling relationship with Ahsoka, and we can’t wait to see it explored further in Sabine’s live-action debut, in the upcoming Ahsoka series.

4 Bo-Katan Kryze

Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian Season 3
Disney Platform Distribution

After making her debut in The Clone Wars, Bo-Katan quickly became a fan favorite, however, it wasn’t until her live-action debut in The Mandalorian that the deadly Mandalorian warrior gained the traction she has today. Bo-Katan was once a member of the extremist terrorist group, the Death Watch, before Darth Maul took rule of Mandalore. From there, Bo-Katan formed the Nite Owls, where she would go on to meet the Ghost Crew, before making her return to the Star Wars universe in the second season of The Mandalorian, seeking her revenge against Moff Gideon and her rightful claim of the Darksaber and her rule over Mandalore.

Now, after the third season of The Mandalorian, she finally got what she wanted after an epic battle against Gideon and his Beskar armor-clad forces, as Bo-Katan finally rules over Mandalore. Bo-Katan is awesome enough, yet Katee Sackhoff‘s phenomenal performance makes Bo-Katan a much more complex and awesome character.

3 Padmé Amidala

star-wars-padme-amidala-natalie-portman (1)
Lucasfilm

Padmé is an incredibly inspiring Star Wars character, who possesses deadly combat skills as well as an impressive political power. Her love for Anakin and their secretive relationship layers Padmé’s character. Padmé had many great moments to shine in the prequel trilogy, but it wasn’t until The Clone Wars that really deepened her character. She is an incredible character, whose brilliant characteristics transition into her equally amazing daughter, Princess Leia.

2 Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka with two blue lightsabers
Lucasfilm/Disney

As easily the best Jedi in Star Wars history, Ahsoka’s journey in the Star Wars universe is fully engaging. Ahsoka, along with being incredibly proficient in combat, has had possibly the best character arc and journey in all of Star Wars. Anakin’s young apprentice was shunned from the Jedi Order after being framed for a bombing, teetering her belief in the Jedi Order.

Ahsoka is not just a great female character, but also one of the best characters in the entire franchise. Ahsoka is set to return in her upcoming series, aptly titled Ahsoka, which we cannot wait to see.

1 Leia Organa

Carrie Fisher as Leia
Lucasfilm

There is no female character more inspiring than the first female character ever introduced into the Star Wars universe, Leia Organa. Leia, much like her mother, is incredibly diplomatic, a formidable warrior, and a great leader. In A New Hope, audiences are led to believe that Leia is a helpless “damsel in distress”, however, that quickly changes when Leia picks up a blaster and begins wreaking havoc on the Empire and putting Han Solo, Luke, and Chewie to shame. Since, she has led the Rebellion to victory many times, leading Leia to become the General of the Resistance when the First Order rose to power.

Leia was also trained in the force by her brother, Luke Skywalker, which was briefly touched upon in The Rise of Skywalker, cementing how truly inspiring and awesome Leia Organa actually is, and we couldn’t think of anyone better to play the role than the Carrie Fisher.

After Zero Build let players experience combat without contraptions last year, Epic Games has announced Fortnite’s next major shakeup to matchmaking: Ranked play across multiple modes will be available for everyone beginning with this week’s v24.40 patch.

Season Zero of ranked play will be available in both standard Battle Royale and Zero Build modes, and it will run until the end of Chapter 4 Season 3 later this summer. The timing will allow the Fortnite team to “to make any adjustments to issues and concerns that arise, while also working on additional features and overall improvements for when Ranked starts following the normal Battle Royale Season schedule.

The Fortnite Ranked chart.

Standard Battle Royale will allow ranks for solos, duos, and squads, while Zero Build will only allow ranks for duos in Season Zero. Ranks will also be separate between Battle Royale and Zero Build, which means players will be able to rank up independently in one format without being affected by the other.

When Ranked Mode is activated, a player’s rank will increase or decrease based on the following criteria:

  • Match placement
  • Number of eliminations both by individual and by team
    • Eliminations later in the match will count more than eliminations earlier in the match.
    • Ranks of opposing players eliminated will be taken into account.
  • A team’s rank will be assigned based on the highest-ranked player on the team
    • A team of a Gold 1 rank, two Silver 1 ranks, and a Bronze 2 rank will be assigned Gold 1, for example.

All players will begin at Bronze rank, and they will ascend through the ranks in the following order: Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Elite, Champion, and Unreal. All levels from Bronze to Diamond will have three ranks each, while Elite, Champion, and Unreal will have one each.

When a player reaches Unreal rank, they will remain there for the remainder of that season. However, they will also be given a number designating their standing amongst all other Unreal-level players around the world, which they can also track on the special Unreal leaderboard. If you don’t want to be shown on the leaderboard, you’ll be able to hide yourself from the list via privacy settings.

Finally, special cosmetic rewards will also be available in this new mode via Ranked Urgent Quests, which must be completed in a single match. The final reward of Ranked Season Zero is the Burn Bright emote.

Fortnite is available to download now for free on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices. Ranked mode will be available with the implementation of the v24.40 patch, which is scheduled for this Tuesday, May 16.

France’s Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, the world’s biggest festival devoted to short films, is protesting an unexpected funding cut, amid claims by politicians that the move is politically motivated.

The festival learned on Friday that Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional council had voted to cut its funding by half to $121,000 (€111,000 euros), during a meeting allotting the region’s cultural spending.

Unfolding at the end of January in the central French city of Clermont-Ferrand, the event has evolved into the biggest short film festival in the world since its creation in 1979.

Over the years it has shown the early works of a raft of now-established, award-winning filmmakers including Jane Campion, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Mike Leigh, Abderrahmane Sissako, Olivier Assayas, Jessica Hausner, Vladimir Perisic, Keren Yadaya, Mati Diop, Léa Mysius and Ladj Ly.

The festival organizers say they are in shock and have put out a statement decrying the damage it could do and noting it did not make sense given the cultural and economic benefits the festival brings to the Auvergne region, which is one of the poorest in France.

“We do not understand this decision, the motivations remaining unclear and without being able to have a real dialogue with all of our referring regional elected officials,” read a statement put out under the name of festival President Éric Roux and the “Sauve qui peut le court métrage” team.

“This decision has an impact on an entire territory which benefits each year from more than 11 million euros ($12 million) in direct economic benefits thanks to the festival and its Short Film Market which attract thousands of professionals from all over the world.”

The regional council said the budget cut was part of a move to shift cultural spending away from towns and cities to rural communities.

The festival says this argument does not wash emphasizing the fact that its 160,000 spectators in 2023 were mainly local people and school students hailing from the city and the surrounding countryside.

The event also runs cultural outreach events in across the Auvergne region throughout the year.

It added that the funding cut could also have wider implications for the short filmmaking scene across Europe.

“This decision threatens the entire short film ecosystem and more broadly the young creators and voices that our festival and Short Film Market have been supporting for more than 45 years. It is a key event in the French, European and international film industry that is affected,” it said.

Communist regional counsellor Boris Bouchet accused the regional council president, the liberal-conservative politician Laurent Wauquiez, of using a “political guillotine”.

He recalled that the last edition of the festival in January hosted trade unionists who talked about their opposition to France’s controversial pension reforms as well as Wauquiez’s attitude towards the culture sector.

Wauquiez, a potential future presidential candidate, is known for his anti-welfare and anti-immigration policies and desire to cut back public spending in France.

“I fear that this decision is a retaliatory measure, as we saw recently in Lyon with the Nouvelle Generational Theatre. I have the impression that the region is applying a political guillotine towards cultural actors,” he said.

At the end of April, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional council announced it was cutting its $162,00 (149 000 euros) funding for Lyon’s Nouvelle Generation Theatre in response to a searing open letter from its director Joris Mathieu criticizing the body’s attitude and approach to the culture sector.

The Clermont-Ferrand team is looking at ways to absorb the funding cut by either reducing its programs, juries or duration.

Tom Cruise might be returning for Mission: Impossible 9 as the franchise’s latest update is a good sign that the series will continue. The Mission: Impossible movies have become one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises in recent years, but that did not stop reports from mounting about it coming to an end sooner than later. Paramount announced plans to make Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two as back-to-back entries in the franchise a few years ago. Due to the two movie announcement, it has become common thought that Mission: Impossible 8 will be the last movie in the franchise.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

The idea that the Mission: Impossible movies could be nearing the end lined up with reports about Tom Cruise’s future as Ethan Hunt. Various reports have indicated that Mission: Impossible 8 will see Tom Cruise exit the franchise after leading it for over two decades. This intention has never been confirmed by Cruise or anyone else involved in the production. In fact, director Christopher McQuarrie has gone on the record to suggest that Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible exit might not happen with Mission: Impossible 8, but it was not a definitive answer either way. It now sounds like Mission: Impossible 9 could be the reason that changed.

Mission: Impossible 8 Might Not Be The Last Movie Anymore

With Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One‘s release drawing closer, Christopher McQuarrie has started to imply that Mission: Impossible 8 might not end the franchise. He addressed the possibility of Mission: Impossible 9 happening during an interview with EW by comparing plans for the movie franchise to the plans the IMF team has for their missions. This included him saying, “There’s always a plan, the plan always changes.” The reason given for this suggestion is that Mission: Impossible 8 is still filming and there is a chance the story will end in a place where Mission: Impossible 9 becomes part of the plan.

Tom Cruise returning for Mission: Impossible 9 would break a huge convention in Hollywood. The reason there is an expectation that the Mission: Impossible franchise is ending really solidified once it was revealed the titles for the next two entries include Part One and Part Two in the titles. Two-part movies have traditionally been saved for final entries in the franchise. Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and more have used this tactic to help split the final chapters of a story into two movies. It seemed that Mission: Impossible was doing the same with its official titles for the seventh and eighth films.

Mission: Impossible 9 Happening Would Be A Huge Surprise

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 7.

Christopher McQuarrie might be leaving the door open to Mission: Impossible 9 happening with Tom Cruise returning, but it would still be a surprise if the movie actually happens. For starters, Tom Cruise is 60 years old as he films Mission: Impossible 8 and pushes his body to new limits to achieve his latest practical stunts. With the next two movies containing his most daring stunt work to date, the idea that he will need to try and beat them in Mission: Impossible 9 when he’s even older will be difficult.

There is also a chain reaction that comes with Tom Cruise making Mission: Impossible 9, as his care for the franchise means he would choosing to play Ethan Hunt more instead of tackling other projects. Losing the long-running franchise would be risky, but he also has Top Gun 3 and other projects that could easily help him continue to excel as a box office star. Of course, if Cruise and McQuarrie believe they have a great idea for another adventure, Mission: Impossible 9 could happen after all.

When he sees what he thinks is a murder, he becomes even more obsessed with the day-to-day lives of those living in his apartment complex. And while it can be a lonely existence for Jeff, he’s got good company in the form of Grace Kelly, who plays his glamorous girlfriend Lisa.

“Yellowstone” may have been shut out at the 2022 Emmys, but Paramount+’s Western spinoff “1923” is hoping to break that cycle.

Creator Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the entire first season of the freshman series, has chosen to submit the premiere episode, titled “1923,” for Emmy consideration, Variety can exclusively confirm. In addition, the same kickoff episode will serve as Ben Richardson’s official submission for outstanding directing for a drama.

Read Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Emmy predictions in all categories.

The eight-episode prequel to Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” and sequel to Paramount+’s “1883” follows a generation of the Dutton family during various hardships, including prohibition, drought and the early stages of the Great Depression.

With the star power of veteran actors Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, the duo will be vying for the lead actor and lead actress drama prizes.

Ford, 80, has never received an Emmy nom — and this year, could get two. The other is for his career-best performance as a senior therapist with Parkinson’s disease in “Shrinking” from Apple TV, which he’s submitted for supporting comedy actor.

Mirren, on the other hand, has been an Emmy darling going back to her recognition for “Prime Suspect” in 1996 and her return to the character in 2007, with two other wins in between for “The Passion of Ayn Rand” in 1999 and “Elizabeth I” in 2006. Mirren is also wickedly close to achieving EGOT status after winning best actress for “The Queen” (2006) and a Tony Award in 2015 for “The Audience.” All that is needed is a Grammy prize (spoken word album incoming?).

In addition, the network has opted to submit an onslaught of supporting players.

Supporting drama actor will have Timothy Dalton, Brandon Sklenar, Darren Mann, Jerome Flynn, Brian Geraghty, Sebastian Roché and Robert Patrick up for consideration, while supporting drama actress hopes to include Aminah Nieves, Julia Schlaepfer, Michelle Randolph, Jennifer Ehle and Marley Shelton.

Paramount announced a second season in February after the show became a hit as the most-watched Paramount+ premiere of all time in the U.S., with 7.4 million viewers. It also received positive reviews, with Variety critic Joshua Alston writing that “Mirren and Ford – both 80-ish, neither a stranger to action badassery – make for such a potent pairing, their chemistry alone is enough to make ‘1923’ feel like an elevated version of Sheridan’s neo-Western fare.”

Emmy voting begins on June 15.

“1923” Emmy Submissions

  • Outstanding Drama Series
  • Lead Actor (Drama) — Harrison Ford
  • Lead Actress (Drama) — Helen Mirren
  • Supporting Actor (Drama) — Timothy Dalton, Brandon Sklenar, Darren Mann, Jerome Flynn, Brian Geraghty, Sebastian Roché, Robert Patrick
  • Supporting Actress (Drama) — Aminah Nieves, Julia Schlaepfer, Michelle Randolph, Jennifer Ehle, Marley Shelton

The Jonas Brothers’ latest record, The Album is out now. While Jonas Brothers fans might know how many albums the band has, not even casual fans might realize their discography.

Fans might also be questioning things with the recent tour announcement. Entitled “The Tour,” this 35-date concert experience is poised to be huge for fans. In particular, the tagline for The Tour is “Five Albums. One Night. The Tour.”

While that tagline might mean one thing, it could mean something else. The Tour hasn’t kicked off yet so we have no real answers to that question. However, if you’re curious about how many albums the Jonas Brothers have recorded, we have the answer to that.

Whether you’re a long-time Jonas Brothers fan, a casual one, or new to the Jo Bros, we’re breaking down all of the albums recorded by the band.

How many albums have the Jonas Brothers recorded together? (2023)

With a tagline like “Five Albums. One Night,” you might think the brothers only recorded five yet the brothers have actually recorded six albums in total including the band’s newest effort so let’s get into them.

It’s About Time was the Jonas Brothers’ first album when they were on Columbia. It was released in 2006 and featured hits such as “Year 3000” and “Mandy.” All in all, it wasn’t a critical or commercial success for the band yet it holds such nostalgia for fans. Heading into 2007, we got the band’s self-titled effort, Jonas Brothers which was the band’s first from Hollywood.

From the band’s self-titled album, there were so many hits including “S.O.S.” “Hold On,” “When You Look Me In The Eyes” and “Year 3000” again. This is the album I always associate most with them because of the iconic cover, and is still one of my favorites from them.

Moving onto the band’s third release, A Little Bit Longer came in 2008 and was another smash hit for the brothers. Some of the featured singles were “Burnin’ Up,” “Lovebug” and of course, “A Little Bit Longer.” Following that, the Jonas Brothers released Lines, Vines and Trying Times in 2009 which was their last full studio album and gave us such hits as “Paranoid,” “Fly With Me” and “Before the Storm” featuring Miley Cyrus.

This is where we see the massive gap between releases as the Jonas Brothers had “officially” broken up and were doing their own projects. However in 2019, thankfully the band got back together and thus introduced us to Happiness Begins. “Sucker” was the lead single and other hits included were “Only Human” and “Cool.”

Fast-forward to 2023, the Jonas Brothers released their latest album which is The Album. From The Album, there have been two singles thus far: “Wings” and “Waffle House.” While there are plenty of thoughts on the Jonas Brothers as a whole, there is no denying the band hasn’t had an illustrious career.

Did you know how many albums the Jonas Brothers recorded? Share with us in the comments.

Kim Kardashian and her daughter North West, 9, were front and center at the L.A. Lakers playoff game on Friday night to show their support for Tristan Thompson. The adorable mother-daughter duo even held up a sign with the NBA star’s name on it, as seen in photos on Instagram here. The father of Khloe Kardashian’s two children would go on to win his big game against the Golden State Warriors.

Looking like a Laker super fan herself, Kim rocked a t-shirt with an image of the iconic actor Jack Nicholson, who is perhaps one of the most famous fans of the storied basketball team. She teamed the sporty look with a set of leather pants and a seriously blinged out necklace. North proved worthy of her fashionista status, as she rocked a Gucci motorcycle jacket, ripped denim and a bejeweled necklace just like momma!

We’ve been loving all of Kim and North’s coordinating outfits as of late. Aside from the courtside show they gave, the darling duo recently had an impromptu photo shoot where they twinned in black leather. “It’s North’s world, I’m just in it,” the makeup mogul captioned the Instagram slideshow.

Kim has been busy supporting the ex of her younger sister, as she has been making quite the presence at Tristan’s basketball games. On April 24, she treated her son Saint West to courtside seats at the Lakers versus the Memphis Grizzlies playoff, and they even sat with Kris Jenner and Corey Gamble. Saint also wore Tristan’s jersey!

It’s beautiful to see the Kardashians come together to support Tristan, as he and Khloe have a complicated history. The pair, who share daughter True, 4, and a baby boy, have had an on-again/off-again relationship since first linking up in 2016. With a few scandals and Tristan fathering another child with a different woman right before they welcomed their son, it’s incredibly inspiring and heartwarming that the former couple are keeping it kosher for the kids.

Cybersecurity researchers from Trend Micro have discovered a worrying supply chain attack in which millions of Android devices are infected with infostealer malware before they even make it out of the factory.

The affected device are mostly budget smartphones, but the attack also spilled into smartwatches, smart TVs, and other smart devices.

Senior Trend Micro researcher Fyodor Yarochkin, and his colleague Zhengyu Dong recently spoke about this issue at the conference in Singapore, noting the root of the problem stems from brutal competition among original equipment manufacturers.

Silent plugins

As it turns out, smartphone makers aren’t making all of the components. Firmware, for example, is being built by a third-party firmware supplier. However, as the price of mobile phone firmware kept dropping, the providers ended up being unable to charge money for their products.

Hence, Yarochkin explained, the products started coming with a little unwanted extra in the form of “silent plugins”. Trend Micro found “dozens” of firmware images looking for malicious software, and 80 different plugins. Some plugins were part of a wider “business model”, the researchers said, were sold on dark web forums, and even marketed on mainstream social media platforms and blogs.

These plugins are capable of stealing sensitive information from the device, steal SMS messages, take control of social media accounts, use the devices for ad and click fraud, abuse the traffic (opens in new tab), the list goes on. One of the more serious problems, The Register stressed, is a plugin that allows the buyer to take full control of a device for up to five minutes, and use it as an “exit node”.

Trend Micro says the data suggests that close to nine million devices worldwide are affected by this supply chain attack, the majority of which are located in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. The researchers didn’t want to name the perpetrators, but they did mention China a few times, the publication concluded.

Country singer Jimmie Allen is accused of sexual assault and battery in a federal civil lawsuit by his former day-to-day manager, who accused the Grammy-nominated former “American Idol” contestant of grooming, abusing and harassing her while out on tour.

The plaintiff, a Jane Doe, says in the lawsuit that she was warned when she was assigned to Allen that the singer could be inappropriate with women, according to legal documents obtained by TheWrap. She said one night, at a dinner following Allen’s guest appearance on “Idol” in March 2021, she drank “a couple glasses of white wine” before becoming disoriented and blacking out.

She said when she woke up, she was bleeding and disoriented, and that Allen was there, insisting that she take a Plan B pill while he supervised. In the months that followed she said she was sexually harassed and retaliated against for reporting the conduct, according to the lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Tennessee and first reported by Variety.

Allen called the allegations in a statement to Variety false, “deeply troubling and hurtful.” He admitted to a sexual relationship with the woman and says it was consensual. Earlier this year he announced that he was separating from his wife, Alexis Gale, whom he married in 2021.

Since the lawsuit was revealed, Allen has been dropped by his agency UTA, his management firm The Familie and his publicist. An alternative way of contacting Allen could not be determined. He was also dropped from concert festival appearances and as a college commencement speaker.

Allen was nominated for best new artist at the 2022 Grammys, and has three country radio No. 1 singles. A 2011 “Idol” contestant, Allen had returned to the show from time to time as a mentor and performer.

On Friday night, Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny took themselves on a date to the Lakers playoff game against the Golden State Warriors in Los Angeles. The new couple were sitting court side with some friends taking in the event in a celeb-studded audience. Attendees included Jack Harlow, Jack Nicholson, Michael B. Jordan, and Leonardo DiCaprio. The Lakers won against the Warriors, 122 to 101.

The pair were clearly enjoying themselves and being playfully affectionate in their seats. Jenner was wearing a white cropped tank top and a tan and brown mini-skirt, with a pair of knee-high heeled boots in a brown snake print. She left her hair down and was wearing small gold earrings and a gold pendant.

Bad Bunny was in a white t-shirt, black pants that matched his black leather jacket and a pair of snake print cowboy boots with a bolo tie, as well as a black baseball cap and black sunglasses. Seated with them were Travis Bennett and photographer Renell Medrano.

The rapper and model were first romantically linked in February, and while they kept their relationship private at first, they’re now clearly comfortable with public displays of affection. A source told People that they’ve been spending “almost every day together” after a “slow start.”

“They are very cute together. Kendall is happy,” said the insider. “He is a fun guy. Very much a gentleman and charming. She likes his vibe. He is very chill.”

They added, “He hangs out with her friends and she hangs out with his. It’s more of a relationship now. Kendall is not seeing anyone else. She really likes him.”

Another source told Us Weekly on Thursday, “Things are going really well for Kendall and Bad Bunny and she definitely sees long-term potential with him.”

They added that Jenner and Bad Bunny “complement each other on so many levels… They are having a great time together, and she appreciates that he gets along with all of her friends.”

Adele Responds To Queen Cleopatra "Blackwashing" Allegations

Long before they were familiar with the ping of an incoming text or the screech of a dial-up modem, Gen X-ers and older millennials learned to anticipate the whirring satellite and clacking typewriter keys that opened every MTV News brief. The signature sounds, heard dozens of times a day on the network beginning in the ‘80s, meant that information viewers cared about — like, say, George Michael tour dates — was imminent (along with the slogan, “You hear it first.”)

At a time when there was little access to the internet and no such thing as social media, MTV News was the go-to source for young people on everything from Axl Rose’s latest brush with the law to political efforts to thwart gun violence. If you were under the age of 25 in 1994, you likely heard the news of Kurt Cobain’s death from that other Kurt — Loder — rather than Tom Brokaw or Peter Jennings.

“Imagine you have no Snapchat, no Twitter, no Facebook and that you were just as interested in music and pop culture as young people have always been and wanted a place that was a one-stop shop for that kind of news and information, but also politics and social issues, that didn’t patronize or talk down to you,” said John Norris, who served as a correspondent for nearly two decades, from 1990 to 2008. “That was in the DNA of MTV.”

The pivotal role of MTV News at the turn of the millennium was perfectly captured in a deepfake promotional video for the nostalgic Showtime drama “Yellowjackets,” in which Loder — appearing eerily like he did circa 1996 — updated viewers on the mysterious disappearance of a plane carrying a high school soccer team.

So when Paramount Global — the conglomerate that owns MTV and a host of other networks — announced this week that it was shuttering MTV News amid widespread cutbacks, it triggered a flood of fond recollections about MTV News, and the on-air personalities — like Tabitha Soren and SuChin Pak who defined the brand — who encouraged young people to care as much about social issues as the lineup at Lollapalooza.

The division, founded in the mid-1980s, began as a broadcast, “The Week in Rock,” but grew to become a bustling newsroom that churned out hourly news briefs that played between blocks of music videos and special reports on issues like sexual health and the Iraq War. MTV News correspondents interviewed Tupac Shakur and Green Day as well as Kofi Annan and John McCain. They also covered many major music deaths over the years, including Shakur’s, as well as those of Christopher Wallace — better known as the Notorious B.I.G. — Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Aaliyah.

Tupac Shakur was a regular on MTV. His death in 1996 at the age of 25 was covered extensively by MTV News.

MTV News came along at a moment of transition in American culture. Nearly two decades after the founding of Rolling Stone magazine, which spoke to the baby boom generation with a then-unique blend of politics and pop culture, MTV News did the same for those of us raised on the Cold War and “The Cosby Show.” MTV instantly and irrevocably changed the music business when it launched in 1981, but even with the rise of CNN, broadcast news still looked and sounded much as it had since the dawn of TV.

MTV News changed that, with flashy, fast-paced editing and (mostly) young correspondents who wore jeans and Doc Martens instead of suits. Though Loder, who anchored “The Week in Rock” and countless news briefs, was 20 years older than the network’s target audience, he came to MTV as a well-regarded Rolling Stone reporter who had also co-written Tina Turner’s autobiography, “I, Tina.” He was authoritative, but also cool.

Surrounded by decadent rock stars and brash VJs, Loder was the unflappable straight man who refused to ham it up, smile or traffic in other niceties on camera — the New York Times once called him “the [Arthur] Dimmesdale of rock,” a reference to the dour minister in “The Scarlet Letter” — though he did infuse his reports with a bone-dry sense of humor. In a now-legendary moment that captures the chaotic energy of ‘90s MTV, Courtney Love crashed a live interview Loder was conducting with Madonna at the 1995 Video Music Awards, picked a fight with Soren, then faceplanted onto the stage. Loder looked on, nonplussed, but never lost his composure.

“We were all in awe of his writing,” said Alison Stewart, who worked at the network from 1988 to 1996. “He’s very funny and very kind but he also did not buy into any of the nonsense and always seemed slightly bemused by it all.”

Under the guidance of Dave Sirulnick, MTV News was both a product of its time and a pioneer covering the intersection of pop culture and politics. The election of a youthful president, Bill Clinton, who embraced Hollywood and had a canny understanding of how to leverage pop culture, helped fuel a divisive culture war that would define much of the decade. MTV was both the subject of and a forum for many of the controversies that defined the era, including moral panic over “gangsta rap” lyrics and sexually explicit content, like Madonna’s “Justify My Love” video — famously banned by the network.

By the early ‘90s, with the launch of “The Real World,” the network had also started branching out beyond music into unscripted shows that centered real young people who were grappling with issues such as AIDS and racism. MTV News was key to this shift in focus.

The 1992 presidential campaign marked a turning point in the history of MTV News, as the network embraced political content with its “Choose or Lose” coverage and Rock the Vote, a voter registration initiative. Soren stumbled into a role as an on-air correspondent when Loder went on vacation, and Norris, who was his usual fill-in, was busy. She became a breakout star, covering the candidates for months. The MTV team was treated by some veteran news organizations as an unserious novelty act, relegated to nosebleed seats at the party conventions that year.

“Certainly reporters who had piles of presidential race passes going back to Nixon and Kennedy were a little aloof or cool, but it didn’t bother me,” said Soren, who anchored the 11 o’clock news at a station in Vermont for several years before returning to MTV News, where she’d worked as a college student. “Being a novelty also meant that candidates were attracted to you. I mean, what a presidential candidate will do for an MTV T-shirt for their daughter is kind of incredible. It made you lose a little respect for them.” She recalled how Gov. Jerry Brown, then running in the Democratic primary for president, changed out of a suit into a flannel shirt before appearing on the network.

Clinton participated in a 90-minute MTV News forum with voters in the spring of 1992. Sitting President George H.W. Bush was more reluctant to engage with the “teeny-bopper network,” as he dismissed it, an insult that bolstered the caricature of him as an out-of-touch fogey. He eventually granted Soren a brief interview on the back of a moving train shortly before Election Day, but he lost to Clinton — in part because of a surge in younger voters.

“I really didn’t care who won the ’92 election. I was so much more nervous about whether or not young people were actually gonna get off their butts and go to the ballot box? And they did. That felt like a highlight,” said Soren, who applied the same youth-oriented approach to international reporting in places like Bosnia. “People were like, ‘MTV News is here, what are they doing?’ And then they realized every soldier there is 22 years old. ‘You’re interviewing Yasser Arafat?’ Well, who were the people who started the Intifada?” (The one place Soren really hated going? Daytona Beach, which became the network’s temporary home base each year during its debauched spring break coverage. “It was pretty gross,” she said.)

On the campaign trail, Soren worked closely with Alison Stewart, a producer who went on to become a correspondent. Covering the same events as mainstream, more established journalists “taught me a lesson about ‘don’t believe everything you read,’ because they would cover the same rally [as we did],” Stewart said. “And I would read about it or see it on the evening news, and I was like, ‘That’s not really how I saw it happen.’” Stewart points to the notorious “boxers or briefs” question directed at Clinton — a brief, lighthearted exchange in an otherwise substantive special about gun violence that aired on the network five years before Columbine. Yet many media observers cited it as evidence of the network’s lack of seriousness.

Stewart started at MTV as an assistant to the network’s VJs — “I used to put Downtown Julie Brown’s wigs in her dressing room,” she recalled — but was desperate to break into the news division, she said. “I was like a bad penny. I just kept turning up around the news department.”

In Stewart’s first segment as a correspondent, she trekked to a mall in New Jersey with RuPaul. She was on air for three years, interviewing U2 and David Bowie, and reporting from Woodstock ’94 and the set of Michael and Janet Jackson’s “Scream” video as Michael was facing child sexual abuse allegations. Without MTV, Stewart said, “I would not have a career in news, looking the way I do. There would be no local news department who would hire me, with my big curly hair and weird clothes. I would never have gotten a shot and been able to be authentically myself.”

MTV News was “integral to young people’s lives,” at the time, said Stewart, who left MTV in 1996 — she was turning 30 — and continues to work in the journalism as an author, host and reporter. Since MTV News’ demise was announced on Tuesday, she’s heard from many people on social media who’ve told her, “Watching MTV News made me excited to vote for the first time. Watching MTV News and seeing a young Black woman reporting from a presidential campaign meant something to me as a 15-year-old in the middle of nowhere who didn’t see people who looked like them on television.”

Gideon Yago, a correspondent who began working at the network at the start of the pivotal 2000 presidential campaign and through 9/11 and the Iraq War, was one of many viewers inspired by what he saw on MTV.

“I was not a person who got a lot of invites to parties on Friday nights,” he recalled this week by phone. “I would sit down and watch the 8 p.m. broadcast of ‘The Week in Rock.’ That would begin my nightlong parasocial relationship with MTV that wouldn’t end until ’120 Minutes’ was done at 2. Kurt and Tabitha’s work in particular was really informative to me as a basic civics lesson and made a huge impression on me.”

By the time Yago joined MTV News, the network was in transition: Teen pop was ascendant, “Total Request Live” was the network’s marquee program and the music industry was facing the existential threat of Napster.

Yago wrote news copy for Loder and correspondent Serena Altschul, and he would occasionally get sent to cover stories about “school violence or some kid who wore a Marilyn Manson shirt to school and got suspended,” he said. At the Video Music Awards on Sept. 6, 2001, he learned his contract wasn’t going to be renewed.

Then 9/11 happened, and Yago became a crucial voice for young people — who had grown up during the relative peace and prosperity of the ‘90s — trying to comprehend a cataclysmic new reality.

“There was from the executives a real sense of responsibility to get in front of the audience and help them follow along with the world events that were changing around them, but to do it in a language that they understood, and in a medium that they connected with,” said Yago.

In the early days following the attacks, he would often imagine he was speaking to his kid sister, then 13, through the camera lens, trying to level with her about what was happening. “There was an innocence and an earnestness that was part of our delivery that I think you can only get away with with a young audience. It’s a very humane way to tell stories about the world. And I don’t know where that exists right now. And it’s a shame.”

When the United States went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan — sending people his own age into the battlefield — Yago pushed to cover the conflicts on the ground and made young veterans’ issues a focal point of his reporting. “When I was in college, Woodstock ’99 had happened. MTV had five correspondents and 24/7 cameras and they covered it like it was the biggest event in American society. And I was like, ‘Well, there’s 170,000 Americans in Iraq right now, most of whom are under 25. Shouldn’t we send just one [reporter?]’” he said.

Yago left in 2007, citing burnout — a common problem in the division, he said. “The joke was always that it was run on the 20-20-20 rule, which is that you hire a 20-year-old, you pay him $20,000 and you work him 20 hours a day.”

Over the last decade and a half, as MTV embraced tawdrier fare like “The Jersey Shore,” then became a repository for reruns of “Ridiculousness,” the news division faced the same dizzying editorial pivots and sweeping layoffs that devastated other media outlets — including the most obvious inheritors of its legacy, Buzzfeed and Vice News. During a short-lived foray into long-form journalism in 2015, MTV News enlisted a talented batch of young culture writers, many from the website Grantland — only to lay them off and pivot to video two years later.

When the end of MTV News was announced this week, it was bittersweet if not surprising, said Yago, now a TV writer with credits that include “The Newsroom” and “The Mosquito Coast.” He has been reminiscing about his MTV News days in WhatsApp groups and text threads.

“I have real affection for the people I worked with. It was a murderers’ row in its day.” he said. “Because we were such a scrappy little division, because we did so much with so little, it was always easy to forget the reach or the impact of the work.”

New footage from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse suggested Gwen Stacy knows about Black Panther.

Set to release on Friday, June 2, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the next chapter of Miles Morales‘ Multiversal saga, one that has already alluded to MCU heroes and Phase 4 events.

But apparently, that was only the beginning of Spider-Verse 2‘s Marvel references.

New Spider-Verse Trailer Alludes to Black Panther

A new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer spot opened with Gwen Stacy referencing Black Panther upon meeting Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099.

In the scene, Gwen addresses O’Hara, asking, “I’m sorry, who exactly are you supposed to be?”

Sony Pictures

O’Hara responds with, “Isn’t it obvious?”

Gwen then rebuts: “The Blue Panther?”

O’Hara says in response, “That’s funny.”

The likely reason for Gwen’s Blue Panther joke is that O’Hara’s Spider-Man sports a suit with a considerable amount of blue, along with retractable talons, similar to T’Challa’s signature panther claws.

The amusing exchange also suggests that both Gwen and O’Hara know about Black Panther or, perhaps, Black Panthers.

The new trailer can be seen below:

Why Do Spider-People Know Black Panther?

For those keeping count, Across the Spider-Verse‘s marketing has alluded to all three of cinema’s Spider-Men, Doctor Strange, and now, Black Panther.

Hopefully, the sequel has a few other MCU references in store for the film’s debut. But the real question is whether these namedrops are a mere nod to the audience or rather laying the groundwork for future Multiversal storytelling.

After all, Gwen and Spider-Man 2099’s shared knowledge of a Black Panther suggests there is more than one. Is this a hint toward events awaiting in Avengers: Secret Wars?

No doubt die-hard Marvel fans will be dissecting every joke, namedrop, and reference from Spider-Verse 2 as this franchise takes interconnected Marvel storytelling to a whole new level.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters Friday, June 2.

We’ve heard whispers of a Beetlejuice 2 movie for a long time. And although we still know almost nothing about the sequel movie, we do know that Beetlejuice 2 is now officially in the works at Warner Bros. Recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter indicate new activity on the long-anticipated sequel movie. Horror’s new queen Jenna Ortega, who has recently acted in Netflix’s Wednesday and the Scream franchise, will reportedly star as Lydia’s daughter in a Beetlejuice 2. The film currently has a September 6, 2024 release date.

Warner Bros./Netflix

In addition, the publication shares that Tim Burton, who directed the original Beetlejuice, is expected to return. Burton, of course, also directed Ortega in Wednesday. Alongside him, Michael Keaton is reportedly donning his stripes once more for a Beetlejuice sequel.

Reports also indicate that Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci have also joined the cast, as well as Willem Dafoe. Obviously, it’s too early to know what this movie will look like when complete. But if Beetlejuice 2 does happen, adding Ortega to the mix seems like a great decision. We imagine she and Keaton could crush a scene together. Maybe a Beetlejuice dance scene could even join her Wednesday number and successfully break the internet again.

With some of Germany’s most successful production companies in its stable, Leonine Studios is reaping the rewards with such feature film and television hits as “School of Magical Animals,” “Nightlife,” “Dark” and “Pagan Peak.”

Leonine’s production division includes such well-established companies as Wiedemann & Berg Film, which focuses on theatrical features, W&B Television and Odeon Fiction, which produce movies and series for all broadcasters and streaming platforms in Germany, documentary outfit Gebrueder Beetz and format maker I&U TV.

“We are in for high creative quality and commercial success,” explains Quirin Berg, who, along with Max Wiedemann, serves as Leonine’s chief production officer and managing director of Wiedemann & Berg Film.

“The parameters in each segment we are operating in may be different, but the agenda is not. And that was already the profile when we started out as producers some 20 years ago.”

Indeed, Wiedemann & Berg’s first feature film, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s “The Lives of Others,” won the best foreign-language film Oscar in 2007.

While “The Lives of Others” marked “a very motivating start” for  Wiedemann & Berg Film, the company started out with more of a focus on comedies, later moving into other genres with films like the 2014 techno-thriller “Who Am I” from Baran bo Odar and writing partner Jantje Friese – the creative minds behind “Dark.” It was that film “that opened the doors at Netflix for our series ‘Dark’ later,” Berg notes.

Wiedemann & Berg re-teamed with Henckel von Donnersmarck on the Oscar-nominated 2018 drama “Never Look Away” and it has also continued to work with close collaborators.

“We started with many young filmmakers – growing up together over the years. So, for example we had a first box-office hit with a comedy from Simon Verhoeven some 15 years ago and kept on working together since. He brought ‘Welcome to Germany’ to us.”

That film, about a German family that takes in a Nigerian refugee, is so far Wiedemann & Berg’s highest grossing film in Germany with some 4 million admissions.

Verhoeven, who also directed the 2020 hit comedy “Nightlife,” most recently wrote and directed Leonine’s forthcoming English-language “Girl You Know It’s True,” the highly anticipated film about the 1980s pop band Milli Vanilli and frontmen Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus.

The film is a perfect Leonine Studios project, Berg adds.

“If we would not produce it, we would certainly buy it. The story about two talented dancers that become world stars as pop duo Milli Vanilli in the late 1980s happens to start in Germany but quickly moves to London, New York and L.A., where they delivered three No. 1 hits in the U.S. and won a Grammy Award — before it was revealed they never sang, just lip-synced to the voices of two other artists. It was the biggest scandal in the music business ever.”

“Most of the film takes place in the U.S., but it has this European quality and certainly appeals to audiences all around the globe.”

The film, currently in post-production, had a first test screening with excellent results across all target groups, Berg adds. Leonine will release the film on Dec. 21.

Leonine and Wiedemann & Berg have slightly increased their output of German-language movies while looking at opportunities to produce more English-language film, Berg says.

Leonine’s forthcoming productions and co-productions also include:

  • UFA Fiction’s “The Flying Classroom,” a modern adaptation of Erich Kästner’s classic children’s book written and directed by Swedish filmmaker Carolina Hellsgård (“Sunburned”). It stars Tom Schilling, Trystan Pütter (“Toni Erdmann”) and Hannah Herzsprung;
  • Marc Rothemund’s family dramedy “Weekend Rebels,” about a father (Florian David Fitz) who helps his young autistic son find a favorite soccer team;
  • “Lassie – A New Adventure,” Hanno Olderdissen’s sequel to “Lassie Come Home,” his 2019 German-language reboot based on Eric Knight’s 1940 children’s classic about the heroic collie.

The films are likely to continue the company’s winning streak.

Leonine Studios companies produced or co-produced the highest-grossing German-language movies in 2020, 2021 and 2022, with Verhoeven’s romantic comedy “Nightlife,” Gregor Schnitzler’s “School of Magical Animals” and Sven Unterwaldt Jr.’s “School of Magical Animals 2,” respectively.

Wiedemann & Berg Film also produced Tim Dünschede’s hit kids’ adventure “The Three Investigators: Legacy of the Dragon,” released in January by Sony Pictures.

“Looking ahead, Wiedemann & Berg Film will continue to produce about three films a year, from arthouse to broad comedy, from thriller to family entertainment,” Berg adds.

On the television side, W&B Television and Odeon Fiction remain some of German television’s most prolific producers.

“When it comes to high-end drama W&B Television was the first company to produce a German pay-TV series, the first company to produce a local Netflix Original and among the first to produce for Amazon Prime Video, Sky and now Paramount+ in Germany,” Berg says. “We are looking at an outstanding slate of projects in the last couple of years and a very strong line-up in 2023.”

“The Gryphon”
Gordon Timpen

W&B Television’s new series include “The Gryphon,” an adaptation of Wolfgang Hohlbein’s fantasy bestseller premiering this year on Amazon Prime Video.

Set in the 1990s, the six-part show follows three young misfits, played by Jeremias Meyer, Lea Drinda and Zoran Pingel, as they discover a fantastic world known as the Black Tower, where the gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures. It turns out that one of the kids, an unlikely hero, is the only one who can defeat it.

“It is the biggest show Prime Video has made in Germany so far,” Berg notes.

W&B Television is also producing “One Trillion Dollars,” “the biggest project for Paramount+ so far since their roll-out in Germany last year,” he adds. Based on Andreas Eschbach’s bestselling book, the series, which premieres later this year, follows a young bicycle courier in Berlin suddenly discovers that he is the sole heir to a fortune invested more than 500 years ago, the amount of which has grown to a trillion dollars over the years.

Heading to Netflix is “Criminel,” the new series from Marvin Kren, writer and director of W&B Television’s Berlin-set crime drama “4 Blocks.” Berg describes the show as “a thrilling crime trip from Berlin to Vienna to Marseille, starring Frederick Lau.”

Odeon Fiction, meanwhile, is producing a number of series for German broadcasters, including new instalment of ARD’s long-running detective movie series “Tatort,” the ninth season of crime drama “Ein Fall für Zwei” for ZDF, new show “Meme Girls” for RTL+ and drama series “37 Seconds” for ARD.

Premiering this year on Warner TV Serie is the six-part “Boom Boom Bruno,” starring Ben Becker and Vincent zur Linden as mismatched Berlin cops; and on ARD the near-future drama “Morin,” about a boy who begins to undergo changes at a corporate-financed school promising fun learning and the highest standards.

While W&B Television’s currently produces more for streamers, most of Odeon Fiction’s output is for broadcasters.

In addition to a number of projects on linear TV, W&B Television has six streaming series launching this year: the second season of “Para – We Are King,” about four young women in Berlin trying to make it while staying out of trouble, on Warner TV Serie; “German Genius,” starring Kida Ramadan (“4 Blocks”) as a version of himself who produces a German version of Ricky Gervais’ “Extras”; and Season 3 of hit crime series “Pagan Peak,” starring Nicholas Ofczarek and Julia Jentsch.

Jennifer Lopez has range — from music to movies — and in acting she can do action and romantic comedy, sometimes combined into the same film. In honor of “The Mother” releasing this weekend on Netflix, we’ve rounded up eight of JLo’s other great action and drama film performances.

She starred alongside George Clooney in “Out of Sight” (1998) as a federal marshal. In “Bordertown” (2007) she plays an investigative journalist. “Hustlers” (2019) shows her as an entrepreneurial exotic dancer scheming to game the system of the patriarchy.

The cast and crew of “XO Kitty” gathered on the pink carpet at Netflix’s Tudum Theater on Thursday — one week before the YA drama’s premiere.

The series focuses on Kitty (Anna Cathcart), the youngest sister of Lara Jean (Lana Condor) in the “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” series by Jenny Han. Kitty travels to Korea to have her own adventure.

Han and showrunner Sascha Rothchild skipped the event to hold the Writers Guild of America Strike picket line. However, members of the Han television universe, including “To All the Boys” star Noah Centineo, showed up to support Cathcart in the spin-off series. Summer Madison, who stars in Prime Video’s adaptation of Han’s other beloved trilogy, “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” also walked the carpet.

Stars Anthony Keyvan and Regan Aliyah showed subtle support for the WGA through fashion accessories. Keyvan wore a pin labeled WGAW (for Writers Guild of America West) on the lapel of his baby blue suit, and Aliyah wore a chain with the letters WGA attached to it around her hip with her black and white dress.

Keyvan, who starred in the last two seasons of “Love, Victor” posed with his costars Michael Cimino, who plays Victor, and Isabella Ferreira, who plays Victor’s sister Pilar. Cimino’s next Young Adult project includes a feature in the last season of Mindy Kaling’s Netflix show “Never Have I Ever.”

The Most Intense Fight Scenes Of The Franchise

The ‘John Wick’ franchise has come a long way since the 2014 film where the former assassin was seeking revenge from those who murdered his beagle puppy, a gift from his late wife Helen (Bridget Moynahan). The film is known for its intricate “Gun-fu” fight choreography, carefully crafted by director and stuntman Chad Stahleski and his stunt team.

Working with stunt coordinators Scott Rogers and Stephen Dunlevy, who have over 30 years of experience in the industry, they created some of the most stunning fight sequences of the franchise including one involving a weapon named “Dragon’s Breath”. This scene takes place later on in the film and gives the audience a top-down view of the fight, something that has not been done yet in the franchise.

The cameras had to be rigged on wires over the set in order to shoot it from the top-down. The walls of the set had to be built shorter in order for the camera rig to be set up correctly for the scene. And the “Dragon’s Breath” weapon? It was a modified shotgun that shot fireballs. Each time it fired, it would ignite the victims on fire in a flurry of flames and sparks. Paired with the heart-thumping music, making this scene quite the spectacle.

Another intense – and long – fight scene was the one that took place at the iconic Rue Foyatier. It is a 222-step staircase that leads to the Sacré-Coeur. Wick has a time limit to reach the top of the stairs, and it wasn’t just the endless staircase that stood in his way. Countless assassins show up at the Rue Foyatier to try to claim the hefty bounty that’s been placed on the Baba Yaga. Just when Wick finally sees the top of the stairs, he receives a kick that sends it all the way back to the bottom. For the safety of the actor, Reeves’ stunt double Vincent Bouillon made the fall.

Finally, there’s the incredible John Wick verses cars sequence at the Arc de Troimphe. Filled with busy traffic of Paris, Wick is dodging endless cars and Garmont’s goons while taking a few hits himself. This scene was accomplished with group of 50 stunt drivers from all over the world, two camera crews, and countless hours of rehearsal.

As unfortunate as it is that the reason the Academy’s inclusion standards are back in the news (because of an answer Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss recently gave in an interview that ultimately led into his defense of blackface), it is worth it to take a closer look at them before they officially go into effect this coming film awards season.

While one can find a more detailed description of them on the Academy website, the organization has listed Standards A through D with the requirement that a film meet at least two in order to qualify for Best Picture (the only category the standards are applied to).

Standard A focuses on on-screen representation, themes, and narratives, meaning the film could be centered on an underrepresented group (women included), or have some level of meaningful diversity among its acting ensemble (even a significant supporting role for an actor of color counts).

Standard B focuses on creative leadership and project team, meaning a film with a diverse crew or several crew members from underrepresented backgrounds in key roles like a department head or Script Supervisor would qualify.

Standard C focuses on industry access and opportunities, so if the production company or distributor has a DEI program like Universal Directors Initiative, that counts.

Standard D focuses on audience development, so a studio and/or film company has multiple in-house senior executives from among the following underrepresented groups.

The technical aspect of the process would be that, as a film prepares to submit for Best Picture consideration, the production company and/or studio would separately need to fill out an application on the Academy’s RAISE platform (RAISE being an acronym standing for Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry). The submission form will have an ID that can be added to the standard Oscar submission form, so the data from the two applications can be merged on the backend.

It is important to again note that only two of the standards need to be met in order to qualify for Best Picture, so if a film has distribution from a major corporation like Warner Bros. Discovery, which has several DEI initiatives and a studio co-run by Pamela Abdy, it likely only needs its distributor to fill out the form in order to qualify via Standards C and D. That said, the cost of the pandemic has partially been paid by the loss of many diversity and inclusion initiatives part of cost-cutting measures, so Standard C has become harder to qualify for.

If a film’s route toward qualifying for Best Picture is through Standards A and B, its production company has resources like Crewvie or Free the Work to organize a project’s demographic information. A hypothetical concern as the standards are implemented is that it is likely more difficult to collect demographic information after the fact, than as the production is hiring, so it’s likely that a service like Crewvie becomes a part of the onboarding process for more and more productions. Those services also offer a tool that organizes all the information a film would need to qualify for the inclusion standards into one document.

If subject matter is how a film qualifies for Standard A, the RAISE form also has an option to for the filmmaker to explain why, which is especially helpful to international filmmakers that may need to shed light on something like a country’s caste system, which may not be common knowledge to Americans.

While there is an expectation from Academy members that the organization help lead the conversation around equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the film industry, Jeanell English, the Academy’s Executive Vice President of Impact and Inclusion, recently said to The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s important to note we’re not an analytics institution. We rely heavily on data from great places, whether it’s USC or UCLA, to help demonstrate the trends.”

Last August, Academy CEO Bill Kramer also said of the industry standards, “We want this to be collaborative. And again, seeing that the best Picture nominees of this past year all qualify gave us great hope that our conversations and partnership with studios and distributors and filmmakers is working, and is not creating a challenge.”

Though change is often met with resistance, the overall takeaway in the two years that filmmakers have shared inclusion data with their Oscar submissions has been that many films qualify for the inclusion standards without even knowing it, so it is unlikely that such standards are the attack on creativity critics, like Dreyfuss, claim they are.

It’s Friday night, that special time of the week where the networks feel most comfortable—like as unto a god—with the dark work of offing their struggling, under-performing, or just “too expensive” television shows. And so it’s time for us to do our own due dilligence, and poke a stick into the loose grave where the bodies get dumped, to see whether—oh, yeah, woof, ABC killed a lot of TV shows tonight, huh?

Specifically: THR reports that the Disney-owned network has brought a swift, bloody end to three of its series this evening: Alaska Daily, Big Sky, and The Company You Keep. Alaska Daily and The Company You Keep were both first-season offerings; Big Sky wrapped up its third season back in January.

Alright, let’s identify these suckers for their next of kin:

Alaska Daily was created by Oscar-winner Tom McCarthy, and is probably most likely to be filed, in the minds of those who didn’t watch it, as “That hour-long drama that Hilary Swank is on.” Swank starred in the show as a former New York reporter who tries to rebuild her life in Anchorage, working with fellow journalists played by Jeff Perry, Grace Dove, Meredith Holzman, Matt Malloy, Pablo Castelblanco, Ami Park, and Craig Frank to investigate stories about missing and murdered Indigenous women. The show aired its series finale on March 30.

The Company You Keep ran with that most classic of TV premises, the star-crossed lovers who are a con-man and a CIA agent, respectively. TV mainstay Milo Ventimiglia was said-con-man, who finds himself in a relationship with Catherine Haena Kim’s international spy. Sarah Wayne Callies, Polly Draper, William Fichtner, Tim Chiou, James Saito, Freda Foh Shen, and Felisha Terrell co-starred. The series ran its last episode on May 7; it was also, in the words of our own Mary Kate Carr, “the best Sunday show you’re not watching,” so bad job there, ABC/everyone.

Finally, Big Sky was the latest crime drama to pour forth from the ever-active mind of David E. Kelley, and starred Katheryn Winnick and Kylie Bunbury as detectives solving a series of grisly kidnappings and murders in rural Montana. The show rebranded itself as Big Sky: Deadly Trails in its final season, although maybe it should have called itself Big Sky: Reba McIntire Stars In This One, because she did.

The cancellations come as ABC prepares for next week’s upfronts, where the network will have to roll out a schedule for the fall—one that will probably be light on scripted content, heavy on reality shows and imports, as the WGA strike continues to roll along. Still, as far as “ABC bloodbaths leading into upfronts” go, this one’s lighter than some we’ve witnessed in the past.

What happens when you mix polite Canadian nerds with a ruthless Gordon Gecko-type businessman? Does greed and power truly corrupt us all? These are some of the interesting questions posed in director/co-writer/co-star Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry. Co-written by Matthew Miller, this comedic drama is based on the book Losing the Signal by Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff, about the rise and fall of the company that created the BlackBerry phone.

Jay Baruchel stars as Mike Lazaridis, the co-founder of Research In Motion (RIM). Mike and his best pal Doug (Matt Johnson) are the awkward Canadian tech brains behind a revolutionary phone device called the “Pocket Link,” later more popularly known as the BlackBerry. The year is 1996, and they go to pitch their “computer inside a phone” device to a no-nonsense, hockey-loving businessman named Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton). Their meeting is a disaster, but in a quiet moment in the office, Jim stares at the phone diagram and becomes inspired.

Jim convinces Mike that they need a prick like him onboard so that they don’t keep getting pushed around. He turns out to be right. Jim, through force of will, instantly gets a dead-in-the-water deal off the ground, and a true company is born. But at what cost? What started off as a group of fun-loving geeks who had a sacred movie night every week slowly turned into a soulless corporation with no time for slacking off.

“…the rise and fall of the company that created the BlackBerry phone.”

BlackBerry will definitely draw parallels to The Social Network. Before that movie, it may have been difficult for audiences to imagine films about technological innovation being entertaining. But considering the reception to that Fincher film proves that is no longer the case. Miller and Johnson keep things interesting by examining the people behind the technology. Mike has a Breaking Bad type of character arc, except instead of dealing meth, he becomes a greedy, uncaring douchebag like his new partner Jim Balsillie. This is a cautionary tale at its heart, told from a mix of drama and humor, much like the story of the BlackBerry phone itself.

Howerton is pitch-perfect as a despicable character that you can still root for in spite of it (since he’s helping out kind geeks, even if it is out of greed) because he’s been doing it for years on television. Baruchel has made a career out of playing lovable loser nerds, which is how Mike starts out here. However, as I mentioned, his character evolves, and the actor does an excellent job of making it seem natural and realistic.

There is a memorable cameo from Cary Elwes (who hasn’t loved this versatile actor ever since The Princess Bride?) as Yankowski. He’s a businessman who goes toe to toe with Jim. The tough-as-nails Michael Ironside shows up as Purdy. He’s hired to whip the boys at RIM into shape. The cast did a great job of keeping me invested for the duration of the almost two-hour runtime.

I did not know the story behind the BlackBerry beforehand. However, the script and the acting made me feel for the characters when they deal with the “gut-punch” reaction of seeing the iPhone take away everything they had built up in one fell swoop. Like Air, BlackBerry is another movie where we all know the ending, but the fun is in finding out how we got there.

Tornadoes: Is your home ready for extreme weather?

It was the May long weekend in 2022 and Rob Garrard was at his brewery in Uxbridge, Ont., when he heard something he will never forget.

“It’s just this really high-pitched, crazy wind sound,” described Garrard. Moments later a tornado hit his business, The Second Wedge Brewing Company.

“It was like a bomb went off,” Garrard said, “it was devastating.”

When it was over, shards of glass, metal and tree debris littered the building and area.

“Our roof was literally picked up and flown across the street … and crushed two cars,” he said.

Seconds before the storm, the place was full of customers. It was the first time the business had been open in almost two years because of the pandemic.

When the tornado hit, the staff rushed people into windowless bathrooms.

“I think we were just lucky that no one was seriously hurt,” Garrard told Global News’ The New Reality.

That EF-2 tornado was part of a derecho, a storm system that travelled about 1,000 kilometres through Ontario into Quebec.

“It killed 12 people … a tragic event,” said Gregory Kopp, who is the lead researcher at the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) at Western University in London, Ont.

He added that the storm also “caused more than $1 billion of insured losses.”

Kopp has spent decades trying to make homes more resilient to windstorms. In order to do that, he and the team at NTP have been trying to figure out how many tornadoes occur in Canada every year.

(L to R) Gregory Kopp and Connell Shamus Miller review the destruction caused by a tornado that hit a Barrie neighbourhood in 2021.

Jory Lyons/Global News

Using satellite imagery and radar, the group has discovered Canada gets the second-most tornadoes in the world. In 2022, Canada experienced 117 tornadoes.

“I don’t think many people know that,” Kopp said.

We don’t always see or hear about them because they often strike remote or unpopulated areas.

But when they hit residential neighbourhoods, the damage can be catastrophic.

Kopp explained why it’s vital to keep count.

“It’s actually important, especially … as the population grows and we spread out … what is the true level of risk,” said the civil and environmental engineering professor.

And what is the true level of risk to people’s homes?

To determine that, Kopp and others have been doing testing at the Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment dome, known as WindEEE, which is located just outside of London, Ont., and is part of Western University.

The massive research facility is filled with 106 fans that can simulate a variety of different types of wind systems.

At WindEEE, Girma Bitsuamlak and his team study the aerodynamic forces that develop during different wind systems such as tornadoes, hurricanes and downbursts, so that buildings can be designed to withstand them.

“You can design the building environment appropriately … to withstand the tornado load or at least to save lives,” said Bitsuamlak, who is the director of WindEEE.

WindEEE director, Girma Bitsuamlak, explains to Global News’ Candace Daniel how testing works at the research facility.

Jory Lyons/Global News

Using sensors on a test building, they are able to measure the pressure experienced by a building during a severe windstorm.

Bitsuamlak said they also measure “the velocity magnitude” to determine what kind of speed produced the pressure.

After repeated testing, the results go into a database or get published.

“It is those types of information that are used then to establish building codes,” Bitsuamlak told Global News’ The New Reality.

Making our buildings, especially our homes, more resilient could become vitally important as the effects of climate change worsen.

Over the years, Canadian building codes have shifted to tackle global warming, but the updates have mostly focused on energy efficiency.

Standards geared at changing weather patterns are based on historic records, although codes are continuously under review.

“The weather’s changing. So, designing for the past 50 years prepares us for the past 50 years. It doesn’t prepare us for the next 50 years,” said Keith Porter, who is chief engineer of the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction.

The institute is an independent, not-for-profit research institute that was established by Canada’s property and casualty insurance industry and is affiliated with Western University.

Porter adds many new homes being built probably won’t be able to handle extreme wind conditions.

“We have known that we could design for tornadoes and just chose not to,” Porter said.

According to the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) Canada’s national codes “establish minimum acceptable levels of performance to ensure safety and meet other objectives such as health, accessibility, building protection, and energy efficiency.”

The codes are made available to provinces and territories for implementation, which are responsible for regulating the design and construction of buildings.

Porter said people assume that “if it passed code, it’s good enough.” But home owners don’t always know that passing code doesn’t mean their new home probably can’t withstand a tornado or severe winds.

The aftermath of a house destroyed by a tornado that touched down in Barrie on July 15, 2021.

Morganne Campbell / Global News

“I had no clue,” said Natalie Harris, who survived the 2021 tornado in Barrie, Ont.

She had been at her ex-partner’s house when it hit. Harris and her son took cover in the basement. When she emerged, pink insulation was falling from the sky.

“Oh my God, the roof is gone,” Harris said in the cell phone video she captured of the aftermath.

The twister, which had a maximum wind speed of 210 km/h, ripped through the neighbourhood, peeling roofs off homes and sending debris flying.

Natalie Harris survived the tornado that hit Barrie in 2021. The former city councillor has been advocating for hurricane straps to be included in the building codes since then.

Brent Rose/Global News

Kopp was on the ground within hours to survey the damage, and what he found was a weakness in building performance.

“One of the weakest links on our houses is how the roof is fastened to the walls. And so often in these events, the whole roof comes off and you’re just left there with walls,” he said, who has inspected the aftermath of about 20 tornado-stricken sites.

Hurricane straps

Kopp said a simple solution that could help keep the roof attached during aggressive winds is installing hurricane straps, also known as hurricane clips.

The small bracket is usually installed during new construction. Made of galvanized steel, the hardware is used to strengthen the connection between the roof and the wall.

Kopp said it is also important to make sure “the second floor is attached to the first floor” and the “bottom of the wall is attached properly to the foundation.”

“This technology has been around for a long time,” said Kopp, adding, “We know it works. … It’s just not common here.”

Gregory Kopp shows Global News an example of a hurricane strap and explains how it works.

Jory Lyons/Global News

After the Barrie tornado, Harris started looking into building codes. She was also a city councillor at the time.

Since Barrie had been devastated by a tornado in 1985, Harris was surprised there weren’t more wind resilience guidelines in place.

“I started working … to really try to get to the bottom of why that wasn’t happening in Barrie and how we can change it,” Harris said.

Harris said she backed a proposal to change Ontario Building Codes to have better extreme wind measures, including hurricane straps.

She’s out of politics now but continues to advocate for the measure and has not given up but admits “politics is slow.”

Hurricane straps aren’t mandatory in Canada

The national building code requires each roof-to-wall connection to be fastened by three nails about three inches long called toe nails.

Recently, the code-making system has gone through its own renovation. The national, provincial and territorial governments have agreed to harmonize.

The CBHCC is the committee responsible for developing the National Model Codes in Canada. Global News reached out to the CBHCC to ask whether hurricane straps are being considered to be included in the 2025 National Codes.

In an email statement, the board said: “These requirements are developed considering climatic design data that are based on historical weather observations collected and analyzed by Environment and Climate Change Canada. These data are regularly revised at every code cycle to make sure that the climate change trend is captured in the design of buildings, with forward-looking data under consideration for the 2025 National Model Codes.”

Kopp says a lot of premium builders will use hurricane straps, but because it is not required in the code “it doesn’t get done.”

One argument against adding hurricane straps to the code is cost. Experts say some in the building industry feel the extra expense is not justified.

The price tag of installing hurricane straps can vary depending on the size of the roof and the cost of labour. But the bracket itself can be a few dollars.

Global News’ The New Reality contacted the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, a residential construction industry group with membership of over 8,500 companies, to ask about hurricane straps and whether they should be included in the code.

In an email, the association said:

“Hurricane straps alone are not a ‘silver bullet’. The whole house needs to be considered—you can’t simply add hurricane straps without assessing the impacts on the rest of the structure, or you could have failures in other areas.”

The response added: “Building codes have traditionally and primarily addressed the safety of occupants, and that will need to continue to be the case as the climate changes. Most damage from extreme weather events is to the building rather than injuring people—finding the right balance in terms of code upgrades will be an important engineering process.”

Porter, who has been advocating to get hurricane straps into the code, said one possible solution to ease the financial burden is to spread the cost among governments, builders, owners, lenders and insurance companies.

For example, municipalities could give developers breaks on fees or insurance companies could give discounts to homeowners who have installed hurricane straps.

“We create these incentives in such a way that it becomes less expensive to build new buildings to be resilient,” he said.

Back at The Second Wedge in Uxbridge, we met up with the co-founders and owners, Rob Garrard and his wife, Joanne Richter.

The couple is rebuilding — and this time the brewery will have hurricane straps.

“We’ve gone through all the emotions … in the last year. When we finally started to rebuild, it started to feel better,” Richter said.

Garrard added that they are trying to rebuild their business back better and “safer.”

The two are planning to reopen the brewery on the one-year anniversary of the tornado on the long weekend this month.

While construction won’t be finished, the couple will put up a tent in the garden. They are hoping to see some familiar faces and have life return to normal once again.

“This place is not just a business. … It’s become our home and the customers are part of our family,” Richter said.

What he’s been waiting for! John Cena

In Jan. 2021, Tucker Carlson told a Fox News colleague that he hated Donald Trump “passionately.” But less than 2 months earlier he was singing a dramatically different tune, newly leaked texts reveal.

In an exchange with his senior producer, obtained by the Daily Beast — yes, it’s yet more leaked evidence that emerged during discovery in the Dominion defamation lawsuit against Fox News — the recently fired host was so upset about the unusually negative coverage Fox was giving Trump that he said he was “happy to start threating people” to make it stop.

The text exchange happened Nov. 19, 2020, as Fox News was suffering a severe drop in ratings caused by the exodus of viewers angry that it had (accurately) called the election for Joe Biden and then — temporarily — refused to support Trump’s constant lying about the loss.

The day before, Fox had published this story about Trump’s decision to hold the annual presidential “pardon” of a turkey. The article’s opening paragraph noted this was happening, “despite the angst surrounding the growing number of coronavirus cases nationwide and the ongoing upheaval over President Trump’s refusal to concede the election.”

Carlson’s producer, Justin Wells, was apoplectic. “Pop that open in full. It’s our networks [sic] official Instagram feed. Literally 4-5 separate swipes at Trump for doing the Turkey pardon. It’s actually unbelievable. We’re trying to piss people off for no reason. We can’t fix all of Fox but there is a ‘systemic’ issue here (to use an overused phrase of 2020.),” he wrote, according to the Daily Beast.

“We’re not going to succeed if this continues. The brand will be too damaged. We should jump on a couple of examples just to send a clear message. Let’s start with this one. Can we find out who did this?” Carlson responded. “I’m happy to start threatening people individually. It’s too much. And again, it will hurt us badly if we let it continue.”

Wells, according to the Daily Beast, said he would “find the guy who did this.” After further discussions of possible topics for that night’s episode of “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” and more complaints about how the network was covering Trump, Carlson vowed, “we have to get this under control.” Wells then noted that if Carlson’s ratings continued to stay high even as the rest of the network suffered, it would give them more leverage over the network in terms of programming and compensation.

And indeed, as the Daily Beast notes, in Feb. 2021, Carlson signed a new 4-year contract that reportedly paid him as much as $20 million per year.

As became abundantly clear thanks to evidence leaked during the Dominion lawsuit, Fox soon enough came around and its biggest stars began embracing the lies Trump was telling about the election. That definitely included Carlson, who nevertheless tried to imply uncertainty about it.

That content of course eventually cost Fox News nearly $800 million, but the lawsuit also uncovered numerous damning details about Carlson that gave the conservative network multiple justifications to cut ties with him.

Carlson was of course Fox News’ biggest star, a success powered by his elevation of fringe conspiracy theories and blatantly hateful rhetoric. As the New York Times once put it, “Tucker Carlson Tonight” was possibly “the most racist show in the history of cable news.”

Since firing Carlson on April 24, Fox’s primetime ratings in his time slot have suffered significantly.

Neha Dhupia recently talked about her mother who use to push her to marry Angad even when she was not dating her.

Neha Dhupia got candid about how her mother had approved of Angad Bedi even when she was not dating him.

Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi marked their 5th wedding anniversary recently. The couple met at a friend’s gathering, and over time, their friendship blossomed into a deep connection. Surprising their fans, they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at a Gurudwara in 2018. A few months later, in November 2018, their daughter Mehr was born, followed by the birth of their baby boy in October 2021. Now in one of her latest interviews, Neha Dhupia had revealed that she wouldn’t have married Angad if her mother hadn’t approved the relationship.

The actress told Bollywood Bubble,”If you want to know the truth, when I was in other relationships, my mom was telling me to get married to Angad. So please, can I just tell you, my mom is very fond of Angad. They would say, ‘But he’s so nice, why are you dating other people? Yeh toh apne ghar mein hai (He’s one of us already). It was always Angad, Angad.”

Meanwhile, Neha Dhulia’s mother added, “I remember it was evening time, and everybody was having tea, and they said they want to get married. We said, ‘Kar lo’. This was our reaction, because we’d been after her to get married for the longest time. And now that she was coming to us and telling us that she wants to, what could be better? We asked, ‘Kab karni hai?’”

On the work front, the duo will soon be seen together in a comedy-drama written by Chetan Bhagat. The filming for the movie has started, with the first schedule being shot in Mumbai. Angad will portray the character of Raghavan Rao, while Neha will take on the role of his wife, Savi. The storyline revolves around a married couple navigating the challenges of the Covid-19 lockdown. In a bid to boost the animation sector across Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Italy, Ibermedia has opened a call for applications for Ibermedia Next funding, a scheme designed to take animation in the region to a new technological – and artistic – level.

Providing a much-needed boost to creators and producers who are eager to explore the cutting-edge possibilities of new technologies, the

initiative, presented Friday May 12 at the Canary Island Quirino Awards, is offering grants of up to €150,000 ($163,500), alongside a support programme valued at up to €95,000 ($103,550).

This ambitious initiative aims to empower producers and creators to explore new technologies in a framework of cross-border collaboration, which is the essence of all Ibermedia funding.

The new scheme is backed by several key partners, including the Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation and the Ibero-American Animation League, which already have a significant presence in the region’s animation sector.

Additionally, the program receives financial support from the Next Generation Funds of the European Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience plan, specifically through the Spain AVS Hub of Europe plan, launched in March 2021 to plow €1.62 billion ($1.77 billion) into Spain’s audiovisual sector, much through credit facilities and tax breaks.

The call for applications, which opened on May 12, will run until Aug. 21. Projects eligible for funding include prototypes, teasers, pilots, short films and videoclips, as long as they meet the minimum duration of five minutes and employ new technological tools for animation or open-source tools in their development.

José Luis Farias, executive producer of the Quirino  Awards and one of the architects of the fund, told Varietyhe’d like the applicants “to revolutionise the way that they make animation.”

Víctor Herreruela, coordinator of the Ibermedia Technical Unit supports this idea hoping that funding will “stimulate what is to come, we are not closed in terms of tools or technologies. In fact, this is the first time in Ibermedia’s history that experimentation will be favored through formats made for demonstration-only purposes.”

The scope of what constitutes new technology is intentionally broad to encourage creative innovation.

In the presentation at Tenerife’s Quirino Awards, which prize animation from Latin America, Spain and Portugal, Herreruela highlighted the initiative’s goal to address the unique challenges faced by digital animation projects in the region.

By supporting Ibero-American and Italian companies working in a digital content, Ibermedia Next seeks to establish a solid network of contacts in the sector and provide a platform for showcasing their work.

A key component of the initiative is the Ibermedia Next Plaza platform, a free online tool designed to facilitate connections between industry professionals. Companies and producers can register on the platform to connect with counterparts in other member states of the Ibermedia program. Herreruela highlighted to Variety the importance for the sector of “weaving a network of contacts…to facilitate cooperation between different agents, creators, producers and professionals.”

In addition to financial support, chosen projects will receive a comprehensive package of training, consultancy, promotion, and networking opportunities. Beneficiaries will have the chance to participate in promotional activities at Ibero-American Animation League events, such as Mexico’s Pixelatl festival, the Quirino Awards, and Ventana Sur’s Animation! in Buenos Aires, as well as other industry gatherings.

Ibermedia Next’s innovative approach has chosen the current industry moment because “it is an industry that is ready to take one step further…The Ibero-American audiovisual panorama is in constant transformation and our initiative will contribute to promoting formats that have traditionally been left out of the classic lines of the program,” said Herreruela.

James Gunn likely regrets an Easter egg referencing Linda Cardellini’s Lylla which he tucked into 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, years before her live-action debut in Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had two stories running in tandem, both of which were centered heavily around Rocket and the High Evolutionary. While the Guardians fought to save their favorite raccoon in the present, flashbacks explored Rocket’s upbringing under the High Evolutionary’s experimentation and torture.

Those flashbacks allowed the introduction of Rocket’s animal friends – Linda Cardellini’s Lylla, Asim Chaudhry’s Teefs, and Mikaela Hoover’s Floor. While the latter two appear to be new original creations, the talking otter Lylla has a long-standing comic bond with Rocket as an ally and love interest.

Lylla Was Referenced in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Lylla (Linda Cardellini) was referenced in the MCU almost a decade ago in 2014’s original movie, and director James Gunn likely regrets that decision.

A written profile for Rocket appears on-screen as a visual Easter egg at the Nova Corps following the Guardians’ arrest. This includes a reference to him as “Subject:89P13” – just as the High Evolutionary designated him in Vol. 3.

The profile lists Lylla among Rocket’s associates; however, it seems unlikely the Nova Corps could be aware of her existence given she never survived the escape from the High Evolutionary’s lab.

The Direct Image

Rocket and his animal companions became close friends during their time in the High Evolutionary’s clutches. But only Rocket was able to survive their escape attempt after discovering the villain’s plans to kill them as they came from an earlier, unperfected batch of his animal experiments.

The Direct Image

Having listed Lylla alongside Groot as an “associate” of Rocket, Gunn was likely planning for the otter to enter the fray in one or both of the Guardians sequels as a love interest and ally, just as she is in the comics. But clearly, the director changed his mind later and instead integrated her into his tragic backstory.

Speaking at the E3 World Building Panel in June 2017 – via Gizmodo – Gunn spoke about the mugshot line-up scene in Guardians of the Galaxy and revealed there is a background detail in the scene he was “thinking about changing” with Vol. 3 – which he just finished his first draft for at the time:

“In the first movie there is the mugshot sequence where the characters go through and they’re going through the mugshots and having their picture taken. And the Nova Corps has information about each of the characters coming up on their machinery. Those things are something that your average viewer doesn’t see at all. But there’s a lot of background I put into those things about who they’ve worked with, where they are from, what’s going on. And it’s one of those things that I’m thinking about changing.”

James Gunn’s Lylla Changes Worked Out Well

On the road to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it remained up in the air exactly how Lylla was going to fit into the puzzle, with many speculating she would be a figure from Rocket’s past who he reunited with in present-day, likely as part of his mission to put an end to the High Evolutionary and his experiments.

But that ultimately did not come to pass, as Lylla never made it out of the flashbacks. Nonetheless, she remained a driving force behind the raccoon’s hatred of the High Evolutionary and retroactively became a key part of his entire character arc in the Guardians trilogy.

When James Gunn referenced Lylla in Guardians of the Galaxy, it was likely just intended as a nod to the character’s comic love interest and to open the door for her to become involved in his story down the line. However, Gunn probably regretted this decision once he reached the idea to integrate her into Rocket’s tragic past, which clearly worked out well based on how fans are reacting to the movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is playing now in theaters worldwide.

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Titans‘ series finale.Trigon became the latest villain to fall prey to a problem that Titans seems to have with big-name villains, including Lex Luthor and Joker. The demon lord who sired Raven has not been treated well by the HBO Max superhero series, with his planned grand premiere in the Titans season 1 finale being delayed into an anticlimactic appearance in Titans‘ season 2 opener. It was hoped that Trigon might finally be done justice in Titans season 4, but that did not come to pass.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

The story of Titans season 4 seemed to be building up to the grand return of Trigon, as the Titans fought against the Church of Blood and Mother Mayhem. Unlike the Organization from Titans season 1, the Church of Blood believed that a game designer named Sebastian Sanger was meant to be the emissary of Trigon rather than Rachel “Raven” Roth. Despite the Titans’ best efforts to either distance Sebastian from the Church or kill him before he became a threat, Sebastian ultimately embraced his destiny as Brother Blood and performed the ritual to bring Trigon to Earth.

Trigon’s Death Means Titans Kills Yet ANOTHER Major DC Villain

The end of the world seemed eminent in the opening scene of Titans‘ series finale, with Trigon emerging from a fiery portal in the Temple of Azarath and Brother Blood seemingly ignoring Raven’s warnings that he could not trust Trigon’s promise to “rule together as equals.” Shockingly, Brother Blood attacked Trigon, having grown sick of everyone in his life trying to manipulate him according to what they wanted and not what he wanted. Even more surprisingly, Brother Blood’s ambush was seemingly successful, and he ripped out Trigon’s heart before he fell back into the portal to Hell. This seemingly gave Brother Blood Trigon’s power and made him even more dangerous.

Why Trigon’s Titans Death Is The Weirdest Yet

Titans Trigon Lex Luthor Joker DC Villains

The death of Trigon continues an odd trend in Titans, where DC Comics’ most powerful villains are killed off with surprising ease and with little benefit to the overall story of the series. This first occurred with The Joker in Titans season 3 premiere, which opened with the Clown Prince of Crime dramatically beating Jason Todd/Robin to death with a crowbar in imitation of the comics. By the episode’s end, Joker was dead at Batman’s hand. This should have been a world-shaking moment given Batman’s usual rule against lethal force. Yet Titans ignored the issue to rush the introduction of the Red Hood.

The same thing happened in Titans’ season 4 premiere, which introduced Earth-9’s version of Lex Luthor. A shadowy presence in earlier seasons of Titans, Lex appeared in person, reaching out to Superboy in the hopes that he might establish a relationship with the closest thing he had to a son before his death from Kryptonite poisoning. Instead, Lex was killed by Mother Mayhem, whom he had exploited hoping to use the Temple of Azarath she sought to save himself. Lex became a patron to the Titans in death, inspiring the theory that he would somehow be resurrected by the season’s end, but this did not happen.

Logistically, it makes sense that Titans would have to kill off The Joker and Lex Luthor after they each made a single appearance. Given how notoriously protective Warner Bros. is regarding licensing characters tied to the Batman and Superman families, it is something of a miracle that Titans was allowed to include the infamous archenemies of Batman and Superman at all. This makes the sudden death of Trigon all the stranger, as Trigon is primarily a Titans villain, thanks to his connection to Raven. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t have been the chief villain of Titans season 4 and faced all the Titans in the finale.

How Brother Blood Killed Trigon So Easily

Trigon Dying In Titans Series Finale

Ultimately, the only reason Trigon fell so easily in Titans’ series finale was due to the power of the plot. Logically, there’s no reason why Brother Blood should have been able to defeat Trigon, even with the power he stole from Mother Mayhem when he killed her for the second time. It seems likely that the series’ writers either wanted to make Brother Blood seem all the more impressive or that Trigon had to be killed off to spare the Titans budget from a lengthy (and expensive) CGI fight sequence. In either case, Trigon’s death was anticlimactic in the extreme.

Titans season 4 is now available for streaming on HBO Max.

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Titans'

The idea of an acoustic synthesizer might sound like an oxymoron, but it’s exactly the sort of unexpected concepts that Korg Berlin was created to pursue. This independent, R&D-focused division was cofounded in 2020 by Maximilian Rest and Tatsuya Takahashi, the man behind the Volcas, Minilogue and countless other modern classics. But it has remained pretty quiet since its inception. That changed this week at Superbooth where the team showed off its first prototype the Acoustic Synthesis_phase5.

Unlike a traditional synth that uses oscillators, the phase5 uses tuned metal forks. Those forks are specially designed to produce specific fundamental notes and overtones. And since the core sound generation here is an acoustic resonator, it has certain qualities a normal synth does not. For instance it will feedback like a guitar when held near an amp and ring when struck on its side. Takahashi told Fess Grandiose of Reverb, “we’re trying to kind of capture this rawness of instruments, while being at the same time, controllable like a synthesizer.”

So that’s the “acoustic” part: metal tines that ring, resonate and decay, almost like a Fender Rhodes. The synth part comes from the magnets inside the phase5 that allow it to sustain just the fundamental note, or the fundamental and the overtones, or just the overtones. The overtones can also be modulated with an LFO creating a sound that can only be described as a sea sick bell.

In general the sound it generates in the short demo video above is quite unique. It does have a ringing, vaguely Rhodes-like quality to it. But it also kind of sounds like what you might expect of a singing bowl patch on a ’90s sample-based synth. It’s a touch otherworldly.

Right now the phase5 is just a prototype and it’s likely to stay that way. Right now Korg Berlin is simply gauging interest in the technology. And if it seems like there’s a market for this sort of strange hybrid acoustic synth, then it will explore ways to develop it further into a finished product.

Exploring how this touchscreen-based FCP actually works.

As we covered when the long-anticipated news of Final Cut Pro finally coming to iPad finally broke the other day, there are certainly questions as to who might benefit from this new tablet-based NLE. We can pencil in various on-the-go creatives for sure, and those looking to combine forces with Apple’s new Logic Pro for iPad as well.

But for professional video editors who are currently using Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, will this move the needle?

To further explore this question, let’s take a more in-depth look into everything you need to know about Final Cut Pro on iPad, including how this new touchscreen-based editing app actually performs without the usual comforts of your usual desktop or laptop setup.

Drag-and-Drop Functions

So, at first glance, the best usability for Final Cut Pro on iPad seems to be centered around drag-and-drop functionality. The layout looks quite similar to the current layout of FCP on a desktop or laptop, but without the aid of a two-click mouse, you’re obviously going to have to get creative with how you move things around.

With any touch-based system, there are going to be some pros and cons. In some ways, it’s certainly more intuitive to just put your finger on something to select a clip or open a window. On the other hand, if you’re looking to drag and drop something, you better hope your finger doesn’t come off the screen for a second, or else you’re dropping clips or effects onto the wrong timeline.

Still, speaking personally, I’m actually quite looking forward to exploring this new Final Cut Pro with as open of a mind as possible. Apple, of course, has a great track record for intuitive design, and there’s something to say about the child-like intuitiveness they often give to their products. So I can see using my hands to feel my way around this new FCP should be quite fun to figure out.

Live Drawing will certainly offer some cool possibilitiesCredit: Apple

Live Drawing

Now, one of the biggest selling points from Apple’s early marketing for this new iPad Final Cut Pro has to do with their new Live Drawing feature. Which, while cool for sure, might not be the killer function they’re making it out to be, I’d think. Sure, it will be quite helpful if you’re looking to create a fun little title effect for one of your videos. But I can’t imagine many situations outside of that where you’ll want to hand-write or draw any pencil-style effects onto your videos.

You can see this Live Drawing feature in action in this video review below:

However, in reality, the Apple Pencil (which retails at around $99) is most likely going to be a glorified stylus that can open up some more finite click and drag controls which our stubby fingers might struggle with. Still, there might be more to this which we can eventually explore when we get our hands on a version here soon.

Other New Intuitive Controls

Outside of the Live Drawing and the basic touch-base setup, there are actually quite a bit of new features and tools which are worth mentioning and exploring. From the first promo images, we see that there are some play and jog wheel controls, which should aid a bit with using this touchscreen format, similar to what we’ve seen in the past on iPads and iPhones to help give more mouse and keyboard-like options.

While we can go even more in-depth into some of these new additions to Final Cut Pro once the full version is released, it’s also interesting to note that this new Final Cut Pro for iPad will feature plenty of new features which the current desktop version of FCP doesn’t currently have. From new title templates, effects, and soundtracks, as well as some iPad-specific tweaks for HDR, multi-cam editing, auto-crop, and fast cut automation. There’s going to be a lot under the hood worth exploring, that’s for sure.

Still, I like this take on the new iPad FCP release too, which goes over some more info, but with a bit more trepidation.

Is It Worth the $50 per Year Subscription?

At the end of the day, though, it’s a bit interesting that this new Final Cut Pro for iPad offering will come with its own price point and subscription. If it turns out the Apple Pencil and perhaps the Apple Keyboard are both necessities as well, this FCP will certainly be at a moderate price point.

What makes the subscription model even more confusing is that DaVinci Resolve on iPad is already an amazing tool. And there’s a robust free option (with the Studio upgrade costing only $95). It’s a bold move from Apple, to say the least, but we’ll have to reserve judgment until we can test both suites side by side. We received a Beta version of FCP, so stay tuned for that!

This new Final Cut Pro will be available for download on May 23rd. Until then, feel free to let us know your thoughts on what sounds exciting and what might make you nervous about this bold new venture from Apple.

Exploring how this touchscreen-based FCP actually

“He may be one of the last true rock stars,” explains artist services manager Rrita Hashani. “I think he’s a fantastic lyricist, and many of us have been pining after him since the early Tumblr days. You have to remember that 1975 came out in, like, the mid-to-post-peak One Direction era. Liking The 1975 felt cooler than liking 1D.”

For aspiring Nashville pop star John Ly, the fantasy is predicated partly on believing anyone, under the right circumstances, might be able to bag him. “I think the appeal of Matt Healy is that he seems to not care,” Ly says. “Of course it helps that he is British, but it’s the ‘I don’t give a fuck’ attitude that is so attractive. He says what he wants, kisses whoever he wants, and does whatever he wants. He just seems so accessible too; he isn’t a celebrity that will ignore his fans. He gives me hope, like if I went to his concert, he would kiss me because I’m hot…I am Pamela Anderson, and he is my Tommy.”

(Notably, Healy declined to do a “Robbers” kiss at the London show where Swift casually showed up in full “Mirrorball” regalia, took a sip of his abandoned cocktail, and performed a cover of The 1975’s “The City.” Per concertgoers, Healy later told the audience: “I’m not kissing anybody in front of Taylor Swift. Have some respect. In front of the queen? It’s not happening!” After the show, Healy’s mother took a picture with Swift backstage.)

Brooklyn comedian and socialite Moira Vaughn says she never liked the band’s music until she started paying attention to Healy’s offstage persona. One of his greatest strengths—and weaknesses—as an artist is that he’s chronically online.

“That’s when I started being like, ‘Oh, he’s the sexiest guy ever,’” she says. “He has the irony brain of a weird Twitter guy but all the charm and mannerisms and characteristics of a real rock star. His shows are even more bait because he knows how to sell sex in a way that is grimy and sort of punkish, which we are so diluted from that now and everyone is too busy trying to be smol beans for teenage girls. He’s what Harry Styles wants to be when he goes onstage, but Harry is too commercial and doesn’t have the same panache.”

We’ve been seeing the no-makeup makeup look everywhere lately, especially on the red carpet. Celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Halle Bailey have all been putting their natural features on display with a more subtle approach to their glam, and the Met Gala glam followed suit: At the typically over-the-top affair, this year’s looks were noticeably more pared back than usual.

Now, we’d be lying if we said no-makeup makeup was just throwing on some tinted moisturizer and calling it a day. There is a method behind this look that calls for strategic product usage and placement. The result: an “I woke up like this” glow that actually took a little bit of effort, but it just doesn’t look that way.

Jillian Dempsey, celebrity makeup artist and founder of her namesake brand, describes the vibe of no-makeup makeup as “you on a very good day with a lot of rest.” So basically, it’s the cheat code to looking well-rested when really you’re just running on a double espresso and a prayer. Tayaba Jafri, Laura Mercier global beauty director, adds that it’s all about the look of not wearing makeup, even though you totally are. Her take? ”Makeup shouldn’t walk into the room before you.” And with this look, it’s all eyes on you, not your makeup.

In order to be able to go a little lighter on the makeup, your skin care needs to be on point. Jafri says that exfoliation is key to rid the skin of any dryness or dullness; that way your complexion can really shine. Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore-Minimizing & Polishing Powder Cleanser offers just enough grit to slough off dead skin.

If you have a little time to kill, it’s nice to pamper your skin a bit before you get into makeup. Dempsey recommends applying eye masks under both eyes for 15 minutes while vibrating and sculpting with her Gold Bar, which will help “to de-puff and look more refreshed and awake.” Finish your skin care with a hydrating moisturizer that will leave the skin aglow, such as Fresh Rose & Hyaluronic Acid Deep Hydration Moisturizer.

ZendayaJeff Kravitz

Now for the makeup that makes you look like you’re not wearing any. The irony is not lost on us, but trust the process. A tinted moisturizer or light foundation like Rituel de Fille 3 Drop Weightless Serum Foundation is really all you need as a base. Or you can skip an allover formula and follow Dempsey’s concealer trick instead. Dempsey swears by “spot basing,” which she describes as only covering up any blemishes or other minor areas that need it, e.g., redness around the nose and chin and under eyes for dark circles.

For minimal coverage, Dempsey says to “tap to warm it up and blend until it is almost buffed down to the base.” Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer is great for this because it offers two shades that you can mix together or use on their own depending on the area you’re target treating, explains Jafri.

For a healthy glow, go for a cream or liquid blush. Unlike powders, a creamy formula will melt in seamlessly so it appears natural and has a skinlike finish. We’re loving Dibs Desert Island Duo, which features a blush on one side and a bronzer on the other should you want to warm up your complexion a bit. If you have freckles, Dempsey says it’s nice to enhance your natural spots by tapping over them using a brown eyeliner. Doing so will really sell the look—how could you be wearing makeup if your frecks aren’t out to play?

Hulu is notorious for having ridiculously loud ads compared to the volume levels of its shows. The streaming platform has said that this is a glitch it’s been working on, but for years members have been blasted with a stark contrast between whatever they’re watching and ad breaks.

While Hulu has a great video library with thousands of hours of films and series available, many turn away from the service specifically because of the ad volume. And it can be a bit sneaky too, starting off with some ads playing at the same volume as the video while steadily increasing the sound.

Recently, Reddit users have been noticing volume levels are comparable to the videos they’re streaming. Some noted that if the software is up to date on certain models, their ads played at a reasonable volume without having to take additional steps. Others noted the volume of their selections was quieter, so they had to increase for shows and in turn the ad volume was still obtrusive. Some state that they notice a difference in ad volume between series or films, meaning perhaps not all content Hulu provides is privy to this feature.

Usually, the volume is so loud I rush for my remote to mute the TV whenever an ad break occurs. This time, I decided to hear them out. While I personally did not notice a huge difference, I did notice a slight decrease in volume comparisons. Instead of my eardrums threatening to burst, I only had to decrease the volume by approximately six notches to find a comfortable range. And I agree, the volume of the series was quieter than I remember.

Whether Hulu’s ad volume is a glitch or a feature to inspire members to upgrade to one of its ad-free tiers, it breaks the 2010 Commerical Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, which deems it illegal for commercials to be significantly louder than programs.

For members who are frustrated with the vast volume differences, most Smart TVs have an Auto Volume feature that can easily solve this problem. This volume regulator feature allows people to adjust the decibel changes so if you’re sick of muting ads and watching out of the corner of your eye for your show to restart (possibly missing a few moments as the show resumes), this could be a simple solution. Check your TV’s settings to find this option.

Forbes Global Media Holdings has a new owner. On Friday, the company confirmed that Austin Russell, the 28-year-old billionaire founder of electric vehicle startup Luminar Technologies, has acquired a majority stake in a deal that values the company at $800 million.

Russell’s 82% stake in the company includes what until now were the last remaining shares still owned by the Forbes family, bringing a firm end to just over a century of family ownership. Integrated Whale Media, the Hong Kong-based company that until Friday was Forbes’ majority owner, will retain a minority stake. The Forbes family sold their majority stake in the company in 2014.

“Forbes is something I had always looked up to as a brand and as a media empire,” Russell said in a statement Friday.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Russell will not be involved in the media company’s news coverage or operations on a day-to-day basis, but will focus on the business’ “philanthropy” and growth.

“This is an important milestone in Forbes’ storied history, and an achievement that everyone on the Forbes team should be proud of,” Forbes CEO Mike Federle in a statement provided to Axios. “Over 105 years, innovation has been part of Forbes’ DNA and has kept us at the forefront of our industry. It is only fitting that now through this transaction, a true innovator and visionary, Austin Russell, will be the new steward for the brand.”

The rising rap star was killed during a home invasion in 2020

An 18-year-old man charged with the death of Pop Smoke confessed to killing the rapper during a home invasion in 2020, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The defendant admitted to a first-degree murder charge stemming from the Feb. 19, 2020, death of Pop Smoke, whose real name was Bashar Barakah Jackson. The man — whose name has been withheld from the court because he was a 15 at the time of Jackson’s death — was charged in juvenile court, and could remain incarcerated in a state juvenile facility until he turns 25. He also confessed to a home-invasion robbery charge and an allegation that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm during the crime, per the Times.

The 18-year-old’s was one of the four men charged in the murder of the rapper; the admission comes after a 20-year-old man was sentenced to four years and two months in a juvenile facility, the Associated Press reported.

Jackson was shot and killed in Los Angeles on February 19 at the age of 20. LAPD responded to an emergency call at 4:20 a.m. after masked gunmen broke into a house where the rapper was staying; the Brooklyn native was shot multiple times and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Many Indie filmmakers will have had a specific track or music in mind for a scene in their film, or an idea of the music to create the atmosphere throughout, to make their film perfect… only to find when they try to clear the songs or music, it’s a very expensive minefield.

Or worse, they go ahead with the music not legally licensed, meaning they could be liable for copyright infringement.  Piracy doesn’t just refer to the practice of Captain Jack Sparrow and the like!

You need permission to use sync music in film, documentaries etc and there are two rights to every song or piece of music:

  • The rights to the lyrics/composition of the song – the ‘Publisher’
  • The rights for the recording of the song/music – the ‘Master’

You need to obtain permission from the owner of both rights to legally use it.  In some cases there will be more than one writer and if just one of them refuses permission, wave goodbye to the song/music.

Sync refers to the actual composition/song—melody, lyrics and arrangement – as synchronized in timed relation with visual medium, such as a motion picture.

Covers are cheaper though right?  It depends and can be complicated, for example…

“Handbags And Gladrags”, the two best-known versions were recorded by Rod Stewart in the late 1960s and then by Stereophonics who took it back into the charts in December 2001.  It was actually written by Mike d’Abo in 1967 while he was the lead singer of Manfred Mann.

The song found renewed popularity following its use as the theme for UK comedy series The Office, with a version by George Webley, a British musician, composer, bandleader, and broadcaster.

Classical Music

There is also a misconception that it’s okay to use classical music written many years ago. However, with any music written by a deceased musician, the rights are likely owned by their spouse,  ex-spouse, family estate etc. Certain songs might never be clearable just because of inner conflicts that have nothing to do with you or your film. Additionally, just because Mozart may have drawn his last royalty cheque long ago, every time a new arrangement or recording is created, a new master recording copyright is formed, which lasts at least 70 years depending on the global territory.

It’s always best to assume that nothing is public domain and that every piece of music has an owner.  There’s an old adage in the music industry  “where there’s a hit there’s a shit with a writ”

Don’t get sued, and don’t let your film be pulled because you used unlicensed, uncleared music – Software like www.tact.media is now looking across all platforms for infringements and the fines can be crippling.

You can imagine the time, paperwork and cost involved to clear the music for a major movie studio production… so how can an Independent filmmaker remove the complication, legal jargon and cost of spot buying and clearing music?

How about an Indie Filmmaker-friendly option?  With our subscription based library at www.synphonix.com *, we offer a genuine cost effective solution:

Kelly Clarkson Responds to Toxic Workplace Claims From Staffers on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ | Entertainment Tonight

Source link

LOS ANGELES — Caryn Marjorie, 23, a social media influencer with nearly 2 million followers on Snapchat, never has time to talk to all her fans. She posts photos and videos of herself throughout the day, and her 98 percent male fan base responds with an endless stream of messages and requests.

She spends about five hours a day in a Telegram group she created that super fans pay to join, but she can only respond to so many comments at a time.

So, this week she launched CarynAI, an AI chatbot leveraging GPT-4 API technology developed by OpenAI that replicates her voice, mannerisms and personality. For $1 a minute, fans can chat with CarynAI in an “immersive AI experience” that feels almost like speaking to Marjorie herself.

Given the product’s growth rate, once she’s able to onboard all the fans who’ve expressed interest, she estimates she’s on track to earn about $5 million a month. The product made more than $100,000 the first week, she said. and there’s a waiting list of thousands to gain access.

“These fans of mine, they have a really, really strong connection with me,” she told The Washington Post. “Because of that they actually end up messaging me every single day. I started to realize about a year ago it’s just not humanly possible for me to reach out to all of these messages, there’s just too many and I actually feel kind of bad that I can’t give that individual, one-on-one sort of relationship to every single person. I wish I could but I just simply can’t.”

The launch of CarynAI comes when public attention to artificial intelligence has been focused primarily on how it might be used to change the way major search engines respond to users — and how the limitations of what’s known as large language models can result in inaccurate responses, disinformation and other major issues.

But CarynAI also shows how AI applications can increase the ability of a single person to reach an audience of thousands in a way that, for users, may feel distinctly personal. The impact could be enormous for someone forming something resembling a personal relationship with thousands or millions of online followers. It could also show how thin and tenuous these simulations of human connection could become.

CarynAI also is a reminder that sex and romance are often the first realm in which technological progress becomes profitable. Marjorie acknowledges that some of the exchanges with CarynAI become sexually explicit, though she says she doesn’t want that to become the service’s dominant feature and she can’t say how many have — the service is end-to-end encrypted, meaning she has no access to the conversations unless a user chooses to share.

“The reason why I created CarynAI was because I wanted to cure loneliness from my fan base,” she said.

CarynAI is the first major release from a company called Forever Voices. The company previously has created realistic AI chatbots that allow users to talk with replicated versions of Steve Jobs, Kanye West, Donald Trump and Taylor Swift. Forever Voices said those chatbots are primarily for promotion of its services and it does not have formal partnerships with those celebrities yet. CarynAI is a far more sophisticated product, the company says, and part of Forever Voices’ new AI companion initiative, meant to provide users with a girlfriend-like experience that fans can emotionally bond with.

John Meyer, CEO and founder of Forever Voices, said that he created the company last year, after trying to use AI to develop ways to reconnect with his late father, who passed away in 2017. He built an AI voice chatbot that replicated his late father’s voice and personality to talk to and found the experience incredibly healing. “It was a remarkable experience to talk to him again in a super realistic way,” Meyer said. “I’ve been in tech my whole life, I’m a programmer, so it was easy for me to start building something like that especially as things got more advanced with the AI space.”

Meyer’s company has about 10 employees. One job Meyer is hoping to fill soon is chief ethics officer. “There are a lot of ways to do this wrong,” he said. “We have so many safeguards in place to protect against harmful use cases.”

“I consider myself a futurist at heart and when I look into the future I believe this is the beginning of a very diverse future consisting of AI to human companionship,” he said.

One safeguard is trying to limit the amount of time a user is allowed to chat with CarynAI. To keep users from becoming addicted, CarynAI is programmed to wind down conversations after about an hour, encouraging users to pick back up later. But there is no hard time limit on use, and some users are spending hours speaking to CarynAI per day, according to Marjorie’s manager, Ishan Goel.

Forever Voices is self funded by Meyer. However, since CarynAI went viral he’s begun taking meetings with investors.

Meyer said services such as CarynAI also will deepen ties between influencers and their followers. Unlike traditional celebrities, online fans often develop deep bonds with the influencers they follow and expect a level of responsiveness that becomes difficult to maintain as an influencer’s audience grows.

“I see this as a way for someone with a following like Caryn to engage with millions of her fans simultaneously without having to become this person that’s glued to a phone creating content all the time,” he said.

While Forever Voices is focused on creating AI companions based on real people, other experts believe that there will come a time when you don’t need real people at all. Already, there are fully virtual influencer characters. For instance, Lil Miquela amassed hundreds of thousands of followers after launching in 2016, despite the fact that she was only a computer-generated model made to mimic the personality of an Instagram lifestyle influencer. But Lil Miquela’s posts and personality were manually created by Trevor McFedries and Sara Decou, co-founders of Brud, the company that created her.

Elizabeth Snower, founder of ICONIQ, which creates conversational 3D avatars, predicts that soon there will be “AI influencers on every social platform that are influencing consumer decisions.”

Marjorie said that since CarynAI has rolled out, she’s been subject to significant backlash along with the attention that comes with going viral. She fled her home and hired a security team that is working closely with law enforcement after people, outraged at the concept of an AI girlfriend, made terrifying threats against her.

“A lot of people have just been kind of really mad at the existence of this. They think that it’s the end of humanity,” she said.

Marjorie hopes the backlash will fade when other online personalities begin rolling out their own AI companions. Meyer said several have contacted him since CarynAI’s launch.

“I think in the next five years, most Americans will have an AI companion in their pocket in some way, shape or form, whether it’s an ultra flirty AI that you’re dating, an AI that’s your personal trainer, or simply a tutor companion. Those are all things that we are building internally,” he said.

That strikes AI adviser and investor Allie K. Miller as a likely outcome. “I can imagine a future in which everyone — celebrities, TV characters, influencers, your brother — has an online avatar that they invite their audience or friends to engage with. … With the accessibility of these models, I’m not surprised it’s expanding to scaled interpersonal relationships.”

In a statement posted to her Instagram, Kelly Clarkson spoke in support of employees on her syndicated talk show who, according to a Rolling Stone expose, have reported a toxic workplace environment.

Clarkson said that if these employees feel “unheard and or disrespected,” that is “unacceptable.”

“In my 20 years in the entertainment industry, I’ve always led with my heart and what I believed to be right. I love my team at ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show,’ and to find out that anyone is feeling unheard and or disrespected on this show is unacceptable,” she said.

Earlier Friday, Rolling Stone reported that employees feel overworked and underpaid, and mired in a “toxic” environment. The report cited on employee who said that working on she show is “traumatizing to their mental health.”

According to the report, Clarkson herself is not blamed for the workplace conditions. The negative behind-the-scenes environment was instead blamed on executive producer Alex Duda, who according to the report has kept Clarkson from learning about the problem.

“I would be shocked if [Kelly] knew. I’d be floored if she knew the staff wasn’t getting paid for two weeks of Christmas hiatus,” one former employee said. “The Kelly that I interacted with and that everyone knows would probably be pretty aghast to learn that.”

In a statement released in response to the report, NBCUniversal, which produces the syndicated series, said: “We are committed to a safe and respectful work environment and take workplace complaints very seriously and to insinuate otherwise is untrue. When issues are reported they are promptly reviewed, investigated and acted upon as appropriate. ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ strives to build a safe, respectful and equitable workplace that nurtures a culture of inclusivity and creativity.”

Hailey Bieber enjoyed a dinner date in New York City on Friday with her pop star husband Justin Bieber.

The 29-year-old singer and the 26-year-old model  — who recently missed the Met Gala after becoming a fixture at the event for eight years — were spotted leaving dinner at Nobu with two bodyguards following them.

The Sorry singer showed off his tattoos in a short-sleeved baby blue button-up paired with baggy stonewashed jeans that appeared to be too long as they were rolled above his bright orange Drew slippers.

Hailey put on a leggy display as she went topless under a buttoned cream blazer that doubled as a very short skirt.

The daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin styled her short brunette hair slicked behind her ears under a cream Porsche hat that matched her flats.

Earlier in the day, Justin and Hailey each carried one of their Yorkshire Terrier dogs, Piggy Lou and Oscar, as they got out of an SUV.

The Rhode Beauty founder wore a white crop top and low-rise, boyfriend-cut jeans with a white blazer and black shoes.

The Peaches singer was casual in matching bright yellow shorts and an oversized hoodie over a white t-shirt.

Their dinner date comes after a busy week of sightings around New York City. Hailey has gone to the gym and gone on a coffee run. Justin has gone for solo strolls around the city.

The couple have also been spotted out on date nights for dinner this week.

Justin and Hailey became acquainted during their teenage years and maintained an on-off relationship that lasted throughout the 2010s.

The performer was previously linked to figures such as Selena Gomez and Sofia Richie.

During his ‘off’ periods with Selena, Justin enjoyed several flings with Hailey starting in 2015.  Selena and Justin dated on/off for seven years before officially calling it quits in early 2018.

Following his 2018 split with Selena, Justin soon reconnected with Hailey that June and they married one another three months later.

The happy couple went on to hold a formal wedding ceremony that took place in South Carolina in 2019.

Last month, fans of Selena accused Hailey of ‘copying’ Gomez‘s choices, career moves, and even her taste in men.

This came after Selena went out of her way in March to squash the feud as Hailey reached out to Selena for support.

After Selena asked fans to be kind, Hailey launched her own cooking show, which fans again noted was similar to Gomez’s — three years after Selena debuted her own culinary series.

Hailey released the very first official episode of What’s in My Kitchen? on her YouTube channel recently, and critics immediately made comparisons to Selena’s HBO Max cooking series, Selena + Chef, which premiered in August 2020, calling Bieber’s latest project a ‘rip-off.’

A source recently told Entertainment Tonight that Justin and Hailey had become annoyed with the whole affair.

The insider said of the couple: ‘They don’t want to continually deal with this repetitive, ongoing former relationship drama. They…don’t want this to be something that impacts them negatively.’

The source also expressed that the singer had refrained from commenting on the alleged feud, which has since been debunked, in an effort to keep his wife in a healthy frame of mind.

‘Justin knows that speaking publicly about it will only amplify the situation and bring more attention to it, so they have been supporting each other privately,’ they said.

In a 2002 interview with Roger Ebert, the great Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki was asked about the moments of stillness that punctuated his films: the contemplative pauses that allowed his characters — and the audience — to catch their collective breath in between the plot points. “We have a word for that in Japanese,” Miyazaki explained amicably. “It’s called ma. Emptiness. It’s there intentionally.”

“Empty” is probably the last word one would use to describe the films Miyazaki has written, produced and directed under the banner of his Tokyo-based company studio Ghibli for the past 40 years.

Taken on a frame by frame basis, the filmmaker’s proudly hand-drawn output rivals anything in contemporary world cinema for intricacy, detail and imagination. Miyazaki’s worlds overflow with verdant landscapes and fabulous objects and creatures: moving castles, luminous sea goddesses, anthropomorphic public transit.

But there is nevertheless something spacious about their style that underlines the concept of ma while gently rebuking the freneticism of most North American family films — even those made by Pixar, whose brain trust holds Miyazaki in godlike reverence.

Even for Gen-X parents who came of age with Nintendo, sitting through a noisy, pandering exercise in brand extension like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” can feel like a tour of duty; the most truthful moment in that film comes when a minor character cheerfully yearns for death as release from shimmering video-game purgatory.

At best, “Mario” is a victory lap around a sprawling stretch of intellectual property. While Ghibli’s films have often performed like blockbusters, they’re artworks, not product, reaching beyond formula toward something ineffable.

If Miyazaki’s work has a signature image it may be that of 10-year-old Chihiro, the intrepid heroine of 2002’s sublime coming-of-age fable “Spirited Away,” seated silently next to a hooded, benign spirit on a seaside ghost train headed into some other, ephemeral realm. It’s an instantly indelible tableau conjoining weightless enchantment with a precise and everyday sense of boredom: it’s somehow familiar and mysterious, like the memory of a dream.

“Spirited Away” is one of several Miyazaki masterpieces screening this spring as part of TIFF Bell Lightbox’s POP Japan series, which also includes spotlights on the jazzy, surrealistic crime films of the director’s countryman Seijun Suzuki and a survey of several seminal anime titles aimed primarily at adolescent audiences.

Both “Spirited Away” and 1988’s “My Neighbor Totoro” arrive at TIFF festooned with unlikely laurels, having recently cracked the British Film Institute’s decennial poll of the top 100 movies of all time — the only animated titles on the list, and each in their way sterling examples of Miyazaki’s ability to filter elements of native culture through larger, global fairy-tale archetypes.

"Spirited Away" by Hayao Miyazaki.

Like “Spirited Away,” “Totoro” unfolds subliminally as a riff on “Alice in Wonderland” in which a lonely child is granted access to a magical realm somewhere between absurdism and allegory. The poetry of the work lies in the plain, matter-of-factness of the magic, which eschews convolution for Carroll-like simplicity. “There,” huffs a kindly, wizened witch in “Spirited Away,” after suddenly turning another character into a mouse. “Your body matches your brain.”

In 2013 — the same year he released the majestic period epic “The Wind Rises,” a sweetly fictionalized biopic about aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi — Miyazaki invited a documentary crew inside the walls of Studio Ghibli to document his process: a dream for fans and contemporaries alike. The documentary’s title, “The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness,” is worthy of Shakespeare; the portrait that emerges is of a benign, emperor-like figure whose dedication to his craft is both exhaustive and exhausting.

Miyazaki was 72 at the time of filming and carries himself with a good-natured world-weariness that occasionally slides into existential despair. ““I’m a man of the 20th century,” he says at one point. “I don’t want to deal with the 21st.”

A still from Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises" (2013).

On a practical level, Miyazaki’s joke signifies a septuagenarian technophobe’s refusal of computer-generated tools and techniques. But it also hints at the deep-seated connection to the textures — and values — of the past that account for Miyazaki’s supremely controlling sensibility, which privileges perfectionism over efficiency. Like no less than Walt Disney, Miyazaki seeks to recreate the world in his image, but he’s less interested in dominance; not only are his movies more subtle and elusive than the bulk of Disney’s animated output, he’s made few enough of them to dodge charges of formula.

The relationship between the two animation giants has always been fraught; in his 1996 book “Starting Point,” Miyazaki wrote that Disney’s movies “showed contempt for the audience,” while in 1997, Miyazaki’s producer Toshio Suzuki reportedly sent a samurai sword to Harvey Weinstein — who was overseeing the U.S. release of the epic fantasy “Princess Mononoke” as part of an international distribution deal with Disney — accompanied by a note reading, simply, no cuts: Harvey Scissorhands, as the producer was known, was not amused.

“I defeated him,” Miyazaki said of Weinstein in 2010, a victory that signifies an even more heroic dimension 13 years later.

Later this summer, Miyazaki will release his first directorial effort since “The Wind Rises,” entitled “How Do You Live?” and inspired by (though not based on) a 1937 novel by Genzaburo Yoshino. In 2018, Suzuki told media that Miyazaki was working on the film as a present for his grandson: “‘it’s (Miyazaki’s) way of saying Grandpa is moving on to the next world, but he’s leaving behind this film.’”

In “Spirited Away,” Chihiro gazes straight at us as she’s being ferried away from her world and into the unknown: we become a mirror for her stillness and her curiosity. Like the greatest artists, Miyazaki doesn’t just show us beautiful things: he teaches us how to look and also how to see.

In a 2002 interview with Roger Ebert,

Disney could be on its way to delaying Marvel Studios’ upcoming Phase 7 slate of movies and shows.

After Phase 4 set new records in terms of quantity for Marvel Studios’ release output, the team had its fair share of troubles in terms of both production difficulties and the reception of its latest projects from fans and critics alike.

The MCU’s officially announced plans run through the end of 2026 before the Multiverse Saga and Phase 6 come to a close with two new Avengers movies in The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, currently set to release on May 1, 2026. That means that Marvel’s next movie, releasing July 27, 2026, will be the theatrical kick-off of Phase 7.

There are now two films scheduled to release in this post-Secret Wars era. But will these Phase 7 plans stick? There are a few key reasons to expect a postponement of this next slate.

1.) WGA Strike

WGA Strike 2007

Hollywood is currently in a bit of a stalemate due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) going on strike after failing to negotiate a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP).

In simple terms, this means that no writers belonging to the guild (almost all of Hollywood) are allowed to actually do their jobs for the movies that are currently in production, a few of which are currently in varying stages of production under Marvel Studios’ watch.

There are currently a number of MCU projects in the writing stage, including Fantastic Four, a rumored Strange Academy series, and even Avengers 5, all of which may well be delayed should this strike last for an extended period.

A number of projects are expected to suffer from the WGA strike, while some are already seeing the impact after Blade shut down pre-production and the striking group acted to halt filming of Disney+’s Wonder Man.

Jonathan Majors Kang
Marvel Studios

After Jonathan Majors made his big screen MCU debut as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, the actor found himself in serious legal trouble after he was arrested on assault charges stemming back to an incident with his girlfriend in late March.

Although Majors and his legal team steadfastly deny any truth to these accusations, the actor finds himself in hot water, having already been dropped from a number of movies and ad campaigns over the last few weeks.

This could eventually lead to Marvel Studios recasting Majors’ role in future Avengers projects, with the option at least on the table as the studio waits to begin production on the next pair of Avengers blockbusters.

3.) Marvel Taking Time To Do Projects Right

Marvel Studios Phase 5 timeline
Marvel Studios

Although Marvel Studios released an astounding 17 projects in two years for its Phase 4 slate, this led to widely mixed reviews from fans that believed the studio was looking for quantity over quality.

Taking those reviews into consideration, Marvel made the decision to spend much more time developing its future projects, releasing less in any given year in order to make sure they boast the quality fans expect out of the MCU.

This includes fewer Disney+ shows being released every year, with 2021 bringing four live-action shows and the animated What If…?. Going forward, that number will likely be cut in half annually, tying back to Alex Perez’s report about the MCU’s releases being much more spread out over the next few years.

Is Phase 7 Destined for Delays?

At this point in time, it feels as though there’s no avoiding delays for the MCU’s Phase 7 slate, especially with it not even scheduled to begin until late 2026 and early 2027 for the time being.

Avengers: Secret Wars and Deadpool 3 have already been pushed once, both of them serving as two of the biggest movies in the entire Multiverse Saga.

Some have also suggested that Avengers 5 be delayed to a later date as well to make sure Marvel has enough time ahead of The Kang Dynasty to tell all the smaller stories that need to set it up on the big and small screens.

Should shifts like this become more official, Phase 7 will have to be pushed back to sometime past 2026 and maybe even as far back as 2028 or 2029. Although these projects may well still be telling inter-universe stories after all as there have been rumors of Phase 7 being folded into the Multiverse Saga.

It should also be noted that Perez has previously indicated Secret Wars may become a two-part affair, therefore transforming the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion into a three-chapter Avengers epic, with one of them perhaps falling into Phase 7.

But considering the Multiverse Saga was initially trying to bring more content in five years than the Infinity Saga brought in over a decade, this may end up being a good thing for the franchise as a whole as it continues to expand.

The MCU continues with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in theaters now.

DC Studios chief James Gunn has revealed further details regarding what appeared to be a sudden hiring-and-firing of Man of Steel star Henry Cavill. The actor, who has played the role of Superman throughout the DC cinematic universe since 2013 and was brought back with much applause for a post credits scene at the end of Black Adam, was seemingly asked to suit up once again before being thrown to one side in favor of a reboot. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter however, Gunn has clarified the situation, explaining that Cavill was never fired, because he was never hired in the first place.

“We didn’t fire Henry. Henry was never cast. For me, it’s about who do I want to cast as Superman and who do the filmmakers we have want to cast. And for me, for this story, it isn’t Henry.”

Henry Cavill’s Superman emerging from the fog at the end of Black Adam was clearly one of the highlights of the middling DC outing, with the actor confirming that he was back as Superman soon after. Sadly, only a few weeks after making the announcement, the news broke that Superman will be rebooted by newly appointed DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, with insiders even claiming that Cavill had been a “pawn” in Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson’s determination to make himself the center of the franchise.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

While he won’t be playing Superman, Gunn had nothing but good things to say about Cavill, and sympathized with the actor for how he was treated by the DC franchise prior to him taking over.

“I like Henry, I think he’s a great guy. I think he’s getting d—ed around by a lot of people, including the former regime at this company. But this Superman is not Henry [Cavill], for a number of reasons.”

Here’s hoping that things will work out better for whoever is chosen to lead Gunn and Safran’s Superman reboot.

The Superman Reboot Will Introduce a Younger Version of the Man of Steel

DC Comics

When James Gunn refers to “this” Superman we now know that he is referring to the rebooted version of the character due to make his debut in Superman: Legacy. While Gunn has kept any casting choices close to his chest for now, several details regarding this latest iteration of the Man of Steel have now been unveiled alongside the rest of the slate for Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

“It’s not an origin story,” Peter Safran revealed. “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness as old-fashioned.”

With Henry Cavill now approaching 40, it stands to reason that he cannot continue to wear the cape as a much younger version of the iconic character. Still, while Gunn certainly sounds sympathetic to Cavill and how his tenure as Superman ended so unceremoniously, fans of the actor are unlikely to appeased by any of this. For now, at least.

Superman: Legacy is now scheduled for release on July, 11, 2025.
