In a sad bit of coincidence, the Hollywood, Health & Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center honored its 2023 Sentinel Awards winners on Wednesday night, just hours after the passing of its namesake and inspiration, the legendary Norman Lear.

Emmy-winning comedian and writer Larry Wilmore hosted the event and introduced this year’s 11 winners, including writers behind the series “Mrs. Davis,” “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.” But before the awards were handed out, Wilmore took a moment to pay tribute to Lear. And remarks from Lear’s wife, Lyn, were shared with the audience.

“Well you got to say this about Norman – the man knew how to make an exit,” Wilmore joked. “He knew his audience. And wanted us to make sure we were all listening.

“A giant has left us and we’re going to do him proud,” he added. “This evening meant a lot to Norman because he believed television can reflect our best. That’s why the Sentinel Awards were created – to honor television’s best and brightest writing.”

At the top of the 2023 Sentinel Awards, held at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, Norman Lear Center founding director Marty Kaplan read the statement from Lyn Lear. “I would have been there tonight if not for the passing of our beloved Norman,” she said in the statement. “He was so proud of the work of The Lear Center and Hollywood Health and Society. And he would not have wanted all of us to mourn. He would want us to celebrate the important shows you are honoring tonight, and most of all… he would want us to laugh.”

Added Kaplan: “Norman’s shows moved our hearts and minds to embrace our common humanity and live up to what’s best in us. Doing that is why these winning writers are being honored.”

The Sentinel Award recognizes writers for their “meaningful and accurate portrayals onscreen that tackled timely and important topics including abortion, systemic racism, climate change, and mental health.”

“These writers and honorees this year have all made a commitment to telling stories that not only reach audiences, but make a significant impact far beyond the small screen,” said Hollywood, Health & Society program director Kate Folb. “It’s such an honor to bring these writers together after the strikes and celebrate their work.”

Speaking about Lear, Folb added: “They say never to meet your heroes because you might be disappointed. Not so when I met Norman. He was everything I imagined and so much more. I feel so blessed to have been a very small part of his massive universe.”

Presenters this year included Emmy-nominated actor and producer Kathryn Hahn, Emmy-winning producer/choreographer and actor Debbie Allen, Grammy-winning performer and actor Ben Harper, actor Adam Brody, comedian and actor Frankie Quiñones, and actors Logan Marmino, Jake McDorman, Michael McKean, Elizabeth Tulloch and Barrett Doss.

In a sad bit of coincidence, the

There was very little “ho ho ho-ing” on the set of Disney+‘s The Santa Clauses, if one of the co-stars is be believed.

Casey Wilson, who appeared alongside Tim Allen for the pilot episode of the series, slammed him in a recent interview. She claims working with him was the “truly single worst experience I’ve ever had with a costar ever.”

“Tim Allen was such a b – – h,” she said. The Saturday Night Live star claimed she didn’t put Allen on the naughty list right away, saying she “buried this” information for more than a year since the series’ release. Why? A friend was a producer and her kids “loved the movies.”

The series was a continuation of Allen’s classic “Santa Clause” films. Wilson portrayed “Adult Sarah” in the series, the grown version of the girl who gave Santa soy milk in the first film.

“So I’m in a scene. It’s just me and Tim Allen and I’m supposed to throw things at him,” Wilson said. “I think he’s a burglar. So he’s coming down the chimney, obviously as Santa, and I am woken up thinking there’s an intruder, basically like a home invasion scene. So I’m throwing things at him.

“[He] goes over to the producer who is standing four feet from me and goes, and I hear him, he goes, ‘You gotta tell her to stop stepping on my lines.’ The producer turns to me with horror on his face and has to walk one foot to me and he goes, ‘Um, Tim would ask that you stop stepping on his lines.’”

That was just the start.

Wilson also alleged that Allen “was so f – – king rude” once he was done filming his scenes, and that “everybody was walking on eggshells” around him and “just looked frantic.”

“It’s the end, and Tim Allen goes, ‘Leaving!’ takes his Santa cape, picks it up and drops it on the floor and walks out,” Wilson said. “And they hustle in his stand-in. lovely man, who was much nicer to act against. People are scurrying to pick up his velvet Santa coat.”

She continued, “He’s a b – – h. And this is the best … I will not say who said this. This was someone that I do not know, perhaps in the crew. [He or she] breezes past me and just goes, ‘You’re seeing him on a good day.’”

Allen has not responded to the allegations.

At every stage of her career, from the fashion runway to the boardroom, Bethann Hardison has been a pioneer.

Her remarkable journey through the highest echelons of the fashion world is explored in Invisible Beauty, directed by Hardison herself and Frédéric Tcheng. The award-winning film played as part of Deadline’s virtual event series For the Love of Docs.

As Invisible Beauty documents, Hardison was among the first African Americans to model at high-end fashion shows, working closely with designer Willi Smith.

“What made me a great model was because as a child tap dancer, I loved the stage,” Hardison explained during a panel discussion after the screening. “I really just would perform. It would be more like I was acting. And I think that’s what was so great about the models back in the ‘70s. We all had our own personalities and we could do anything we wanted. And the designers really appreciated if we bought a lot of personality.”

Later, Hardison founded her own modeling agency, launching the careers of Tyson Beckford, Roshumba Williams, Veronica Webb, and Kimora Lee Simmons, among many others.

“I didn’t want to do it, I’ll be honest with you. That was not my desire,” Hardison said of starting her own agency. “But there were other people around me who kept telling me, ‘You have to do this’ and, ‘What else are you going to do?’ I wanted to go to Los Angeles and make movies or get into the music business. They’re saying, ‘No, what, are you crazy? You have to do it.’ So I was pushed to do it… And I really am grateful that I did it because I did it in such a way and such a style that it really made a great difference. And it was successful.”

Tcheng, who has made documentaries about Halston, Diana Vreeland, and the House of Dior, says Hardison’s contributions as a businesswoman in the modeling space were pivotal.

“It was certainly the first time that a Black woman was owning an agency that was catering to the top fashion designers in the industry,” Tcheng noted. “It had white models, it had Asian models, it had Black models, it had everything. So, Bethann really put the bar pretty high and wanted to service everyone. And she did… She had all the cool girls and boys and then those models would be snatched by bigger agencies because she was really discovering the new talent.”

She brought major change to the industry by forming the Black Girls Coalition with Iman, holding fashion houses and fashion magazines to account when they booked only white models, ignoring talented people of color. And through her mentorship, Beckford became extraordinarily successful as the face of Ralph Lauren’s menswear, a watershed moment for fashion. “With the agency,” Tcheng said, “she starts mothering the industry.”

Speaking of motherhood, Bethann is mom to actor Kadeem Hardison, who rose to fame as the star of TV’s A Different World. Their relationship, and its ups and downs, becomes a focus of part of the film.

“He’s like a cheerleader for the film,” Hardison said of her son. “At some point when he heard there was going to be a screening — another screening after we had opened [theatrically] – to sort of help more people see it, he called up so many friends of his that hadn’t heard from him so long that they all showed up… He loves the film. He’s so proud of it.”

For the Love of Docs is a virtual Deadline event series sponsored by National Geographic in partnership with the International Documentary Association (IDA). The series concludes next Tuesday with our screening of Kokomo City, directed by D. Smith.

Working on a Christmas show should be fun, but for Casey Wilson, acting with Tim Allen on The Santa Clauses was anything but a holly jolly good time.

“Tim Allen was such a bitch,” Wilson, 43, said on a recent episode of her “Bitch Sesh” podcast via Variety. “It was the truly single worst experience I’ve ever had with a costar ever.”

Wilson guest starred on the 2022 pilot episode of Disney+’s The Santa Clauses. The series, which is the continuation of The Santa Clause film trilogy, is currently in its second season. It follows Scott Calvin a.k.a. Santa Claus (Allen) as he navigates his next chapter in the North Pole after realizing that he needs to find a successor. Wilson, for her part, portrayed the adult version of 1994’s Sara, the little girl who gave Santa soy milk after he said he was lactose intolerant.

Some stars have taken on the ultimate challenge of spreading Christmas cheer by portraying the most iconic holiday figure — Santa Claus. While all actors find themselves donning a red suit and white beard in their roles as Santa, Billy Bob Thorton had the unique task of playing a naughty version in the 2003 film […]

While Wilson filmed her episode with Allen, 70, more than a year ago, she revealed on her podcast that she “buried” the story about her experience because she’s “great” friends with a producer on the series. The Happy Endings alum also noted that her children “loved the movies,” so she kept her alleged on-set issues under wraps.

Wilson proceeded to recount shooting a scene with Allen in which she was “supposed to throw things” at him because her character thinks he’s a burglar and not Santa coming down the chimney.

“So I’m throwing things at him. [He] goes over to the producer who is standing four feet from me and goes, and I hear him, he goes, ‘You gotta tell her to stop stepping on my lines,’” Wilson alleged. “The producer turns to me with horror on his face and has to walk one foot to me and he goes, ‘Um, Tim would ask that you stop stepping on his lines.’”

He put on the suit! Tim Allen brought Father Christmas to life in 1994’s The Santa Clause — and fans are still enchanted by his hilarious depiction of the iconic holiday figure. Scott Calvin (Allen) is thrown for a loop after Santa falls off his roof on Christmas Eve while he is watching his son, […]

The Physical actress remembered thinking that “everybody was walking on eggshells” when Allen was on set. In addition to allegedly being scolded for the line mishap, Wilson said when the Home Improvement alum was done, “he was so f–king rude” and allegedly “never made eye contact, never said anything.”

Wilson noted the whole situation was “so uncomfortable” but not uncommon, according to an alleged conversation she had with a crew member. “It’s the end [of the scene], and Tim Allen goes, ‘Leaving!’ [He] takes his Santa cape, picks it up and drops it on the floor and walks out,” Wilson recalled. “And they hustle in his stand-in; lovely man, who was much nicer to act against. People are scurrying to pick up his velvet Santa coat. He’s a bitch.”

Once Allen exited the stage, Wilson claimed that “someone that I do not know, perhaps in the crew” commented on the situation. “[He or she] breezes past me and just goes, ‘You’re seeing him on a good day,’” she alleged.

While Allen has yet to comment on Wilson’s allegations, he previously revealed that he has had one major mess up while playing Scott Calvin/Santa. While filming Santa Clause 2 in 2002, Allen accidentally dropped an F-bomb.

“It was like cats. They wouldn’t leave me alone. I’m dressed like Santa Claus. I look like Santa Claus. We had a North Pole set,” he said of working with so many kids during a January 2021 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, noting that after hours in the suit he grew “very angry” when two kids started to argue and delay the shoot.

Allen continued: “Fifteen takes later, the kids said one more word and I let out the loudest F-bomb. And I turned around, and there are 12 children who look like you had ripped their legs off. Their Santa has just screamed the F-bomb.”

Despite the awkward scene, Allen chose to reprise his role in the Disney+ series and the show soon became a family affair. His real-life daughter Elizabeth Allen-Dick plays his TV daughter, Sandra, which has been a gift for Allen.

“It’s one of those moments that I’ll carry with me forever,” he exclusively told Us Weekly in December. “To see the professional that she’s turned into, [she] treats everybody well, shows up on time, does her job, works long hours, [with] no complaints.”

Us Weekly has reached out to Allen’s rep for comment.

Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif tied the knot in 2021.

Koffee With Karan Season 8: Vicky Kaushal reveals that he met Katrina Kaif’s siblings and mother for the first time just a week before their wedding.

After keeping their relationship hush hush for a couple of years, Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif tied the knot in an intimate but lavish ceremony at Six Senses Fort Barwara, Rajasthan on December 9, 2021. It was the much-talked about Koffee ‘manifestation couch’ where Katrina named Vicky as the one actor she was looking forward to working with the most and the rest, as we know, is history. While the audience is yet to watch the lovebirds in a film together, their PDA on social media and pictures of them spotted hand-in-hand at red carpets continue to dish out major couple goals.

And now, for the first time ever, Vicky spilled the beans on how he proposed to Katrina ahead of their big day in Rajasthan in the recently released episode of Koffee With Karan 8, where he appeared along with his Lust Stories and Govinda Naam Mera co-star Kiara Advani. When prodded by Karan Johar, Vicky blushed and revealed how their busy schedules became a hindrance for him to plan an elaborate proposal for his lady love.

He went to share that he finally managed to propose her by going down on his knees a night before their wedding in their hotel before their friends and families arrived.

“It was very last minute. I had been warned by everybody that if you don’t propose, it’s something you’ll have to be prepared for for the rest of your life that you got to hear about it. I did that one day before the wedding It was dinner just before any of the friends and families could come,” the actor said.

Vicky also said that he met Katrina’s siblings and mother for the first time just a week before the wedding when they flew down to Mumbai. Known for his moves, Vicky told Karan that he used his dancing talent to impress her family. In his words, he ‘broke the ice’ by grooving to Tip Tip Barsa Paani, which warmed them up to him.

Further, when Karan asked him about the three ways in which Katrina Kaif refers to him, Vicky replied, ‘Booboo, baby and aey!’ This made both Karan and Kiara burst out into peals of laughter.

Prior to Vicky’s big revelation, Kiara also shed light on how Sidharth Malhotra proposed to her during a vacation in Rome where Sidharth’s parents also accompanied them. Kiara revealed that she had an ‘inkling’ that her Shershaah co-star would propose to her during the trip but was pleasantly surprised when he popped the question in their first destination itself. Being a true-blue old-school romantic, Sidharth went down on his knees during a candle-light dinner at a Michelin star restaurant with violins playing in the backdrop.

The first image that the word ‘Bollywood’ conjures up is one of song and dance. And Netflix’s “The Archies” promises to be a prime example of that.

“The Archies” is a 1960s-set feature film adaptation of the Archie comics, which are hugely popular on the Indian subcontinent. The musical drama is directed by Zoya Akhtar and produced by Akhtar and Reema Kagti (“Dahaad”) for Tiger Baby and Sharad Devarajan for Graphic India. It is written by Kagti, Akhtar and Ayesha DeVitre (“Kapoor & Sons”).

Young actors Mihir Ahuja, Dot, Yuvraj Menda and Vedang Raina feature in the film’s cast. The offspring of Bollywood royalty are debuting in the film, including Khushi Kapoor, the daughter of the late actor Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor and sister of Janhvi Kapoor; superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan; and Agastya Nanda, the grandson of revered actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan.

The music by Ankur Tewari and the Islanders and the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio is on the Sony Music India label.

Songs are a crucial part of most Bollywood films and play a key role in their promotion, whether its a theatrical release or a direct-to-digital premiere like “The Archies.”

“Its a coming-of-age musical, a beautiful story of love, friendship, heartbreak, all nicely interwoven with some great music,” Vinit Thakkar MD of Sony Music India, told Variety. “We have 16 tracks. The whole story is beautifully expressed through music and spoken words.”

“But I think even for other films, music is intrinsic to culture and the fabric of the [Indian] society. Music takes the conversation or the story forward from one point to the other even today in a lot of films. So, it is integral to help to build on the narrative and the story,” Thakkar added.

Sony’s promotions for the film include an Archies-themed roller disco event in London and a music launch in India where the 1960s as seen in the film was recreated and served as the backdrop of a concert featuring the musical talent from the soundtrack.

Thakkar is confident that “The Archies” soundtrack will resonate beyond India and the diaspora. “One of the wonderful things that you see over the last two or three years is that great content has become deeply language agnostic. Whether it’s content coming from outside of the world into India, which is not necessarily in Indian languages, or even English, has become so popular in this part of the world, we see this over and over with music as well, where different language music has broken across the globe,” Thakkar said.

“We feel that the narrative of the film, the way Zoya has made the movie and the way the music is entrenched in it, and of course, with the distribution across the globe, we as a team are fairly confident that this will appeal to a lot of audiences,” Thakkar added.

“The Archies” streams from Dec. 7 on Netflix.

Jonathan Majors Grace Jabbari

The Jonathan Majors domestic assault trial continued Tuesday with alleged victim Grace Jabbari taking the stand.

Jabbari reportedly cried several times on the witness stand and testified that Majors could become volatile and controlling. The Loki star would also threaten suicide after fights, she said.

On the night of the incident, Jabbari testified that she and Majors went to Brooklyn to see a play and have dinner.

What Happened on the Night of the Incident

On the drive home to Manhattan, Jabbari said she noticed a text message on Majors’s phone that read, “I wish I was kissing you right now.”

After grabbing the phone from Majors’s hands, she alleges he “pulled” and “twisted” her arm to retrieve the device. She also allegedly felt a “hard blow” across her head.

After getting his phone back, Majors ordered the driver to stop the car. After the actor exited the vehicle, Jabbari said she tried to follow him.

At this point, the jury was shown a surveillance video of Majors pushing Jabbari back into the car.

“The pain wasn’t registering,” she said. “I was aware there was pain in my body, but I hadn’t registered anything. I’m a dancer. I’ve danced with a broken rib.”

She added, “I was only thinking from my heart of the infidelity. That morning, we were talking about when we were going to get married and the names of our [future] children.”

Majors Refers To Himself as “A Great Man”

During the day’s proceedings, the jury also heard audio that Jabbari recorded during an unrelated fight in September 2022. In the recording, Majors can be heard demanding that Jabbari behave like Coretta Scott King.

“I’m a great man. A great man. I do great things for my culture and for the world,” Majors is heard saying in the recording. “The woman that supports me needs to be a great woman.”

Earlier in the day, Jabbari discussed the highs and lows of her relationship with Majors. The couple met on the London set of Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

“He was really kind and loving. He told me he loved me very early on, which was overwhelming, but I loved it. And I loved him,” she told the jurors. “He wrote me poetry. I felt very loved and cared for and seen.”

A Dark Side of the Relationship

According to Jabbari, the first time she remembered Majors becoming angry with her was in December 2021, when he berated her for bringing up a former boyfriend’s pets.

“It was the first time I felt scared of him,” she said. “I knew to never mention my ex again or anyone I had dated before.”

Jabbari promised Majors that she would never tell anyone about the dark side of their relationship.

“I felt like I had to keep a lot of secrets from everyone,” she said. “I felt very isolated. It was confusing. I felt scared of him but quite dependent on him,” Jabbari told the jurors.

After their fights, Jabbari stated that Majros would refer to himself as a “monster” and threaten to commit suicide.

Actor Jonathan Majors is photographed for Los Angeles Times on May 28, 2019 in El Segundo.

“I pleaded with him [so that] he wouldn’t do that. He would say, ‘It’s in place. It’s in motion.’ I’d say, ‘You can’t do that. What about your mother? What about your daughter?’” Jabbari said. “I would intend to make him feel safe and loved and secure. And he would receive that.”

Jabbari’s testimony is now expected to continue Wednesday. In total, the trial is scheduled to take two weeks.

Footage of Amber Heard’s Mera in a new Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer suggests tragedy awaits in the upcoming DCU sequel.

Set to release December 22, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman 2 reunites much of the 2018 movie’s man cast, including King Orm’s Patrick Wilson, Atlanna’s Nicole Kidman, and Mera, Arthur Curry’s wife, played by Amber Heard.

Marketing for Aquaman 2 has only shown the briefest glimpses of Amber Heard’s heroine, which many attribute to the controversy surrounding the defamation case between her and her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.

However, the sequel’s latest trailer just showed more of the actress and in a way that hints at what the film has in store.

Aquaman 2 Trailer Shows Emotional Amber Heard

A new promo for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom featured a rapid-fire series of shots that has fans questioning whether everyone in the cast will survive the sequel.

After Black Manta, played Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, says “I’m gonna kill Aquaman” and “destroy everything he holds dear,” the trailer shows a quick but serious shot of Aquaman, bending over someone who’s lying on the ground.

Warner Bros.

This is followed by a powerful shot of Mera screaming as she reacts to whatever has taken place.

Marketing for Aquaman 2 has already shown Arthur Curry fully embracing family life and his role as a father to his newborn son.

Therefore, it looks like like Black Manta is targeting Aquaman’s family.

But in light of Mera’s particularly devastating response, some are speculating if Temuera Morrison’s Thomas Curry – or Aquaman and Mera’s son – will be killed or kidnapped in the upcoming film.

The full promo can be watched below, with Heard briefly appearing at the :06 mark:

Who Won’t Survive Aquaman 2?

While this Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom footage suggests both Thomas Curry and Aquaman’s son are Black Manta’s targets, killing the latter seems extreme for this movie and its tone.

If anyone in Aquaman’s family were to die, then Thomas Curry appears to be the safe bet and will likely contribute to the sequel’s narrative of Aquaman now being a father himself and teaming up with his brother, King Orm.

Still, that doesn’t rule out the possibility that Arthur and Mera’s son could be in danger; and if Thomas Curry is destined to die in the sequel, it’s likely in an attempt to save the baby from Black Manta.

If so, this would also explain Mera’s distress as well as earlier footage of Heard appearing extremely angry as she attempts to break through a pane of glass.

Fans should expect to see and hear more about what awaits in Aquaman 2 soon.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in theaters on Friday, December 22.

Fortnite Chapter 5 has been pretty great so far in the ways that matter most–the battle royale gameplay feels different in a good way, and the battle pass is one of Fortnite’s best ever. But it’s also managed to introduce a totally revamped locker UI that adds support for new cosmetics related to the new Lego, Rocket League and Festival modes–and which makes the customization experience a lot worse than it used to be, inspiring a ton of backlash from fans–this has been an even bigger topic on reddit than the changes to movement have been.

When I say the locker experience has gotten worse, I don’t mean that in a “this looks new and different and I don’t like that” sort of way. Nearly every aspect of dealing with your locker while using a controller–such as equipping skins and other cosmetics–now takes significantly longer, and there are key functions from the old locker that somehow got left out of this revamp all together. Since most Fortnite players use controllers, it’s a bit of an issue, as all these constant wasted seconds add up.

The “why” of all this is beyond my paygrade, so let’s cut to the chase and take a look at a list of ways in which Fortnite’s locker experience now functions worse with the new UI.

1. Selecting the button to enter an item’s detail menu in your locker equips the item, and every time you examine any style in the detail menu it equips that style automatically as well.

2. Archiving used to involve switching to a mass-select menu. Now, there’s no mass-select option, and archiving an item requires navigating a dropdown menu for each individual item.

3. Favoriting an item in your locker used to require one button press, and now you navigate a dropdown menu for each individual thing you want to fave.

4. You can no longer return to the top of your locker menu by pressing Triangle/Y. This means that in order to unequip an item or randomize a category, you have to manually scroll to the top, which can take a while if you have a lot of stuff.

5. All locker presets have been broken, keeping the assigned skin, back bling, pickaxe, glider and contrail, but separating out emotes, wraps, banner, loading screen and lobby music. Now it’s not possible to assign specific emotes or wraps to a skin preset at all–the new UI includes a separate group of emote presets, as well as wrap presets, but these different types of presets can’t interact. You have to manually choose your skin preset and your emote preset and your wrap preset separately.

6. On top of that, there’s no longer an option to shuffle your locker presets. Previously, you could put your presets on random and they would switch each match. Now, you can only choose presets manually.

7. You used to be able to clear all your locker notifications, which come up every time you unlock something new, all at once with a single press of a button. Now, the locker has been broken up into seven distinct segments, and you have to clear each segment’s notifications individually, and each one now requires navigating a dropdown menu instead of having a dedicated button that does this.

8. It’s likewise with the new “randomize loadout” feature. You can randomize sections individually, but you cannot randomize your entire locker at once. If you don’t like what the randomizer gave you, it requires six button presses every time you want to try again.

9. Sorting a locker section by your most recent items previously required two button presses, and now it requires eight. This change actually happened during OG season, but it was exacerbated by a new quirk in Chapter 5: If you close the “sort & filter” menu by hitting the cancel button, no matter what, it will always return to the default sorting. So if you’ve already sorted by recent, and then open and close the “sort & filter” menu without changing anything, it will put you back on the default sorting.

10. Rarity colors have been removed from the locker, even though everything is still sorted by rarity by default. That makes navigating the locker an all around more difficult experience—the color coding was very helpful for helping keep track of where you were in your locker while you quickly scroll up and down, and so now, for those of us with stacked lockers, it takes longer to find things. Sorting alphabetically helps, but the color coding was a great visual shorthand that was easy to process.

11. Scrolling right or left to the edge of your locker used to either take you up to the previous row of items or down to the next row, but now scrolling to the edge does nothing at all.

This list isn’t exhaustive, and mouse-and-keyboard schemes have a whole other host of issues unique to that interface. What’s interesting about all this is the UI isn’t particularly buggy–for the most part it’s built to be this way. That doesn’t mean they wanted to turn out like this, with key missing features–it’s more likely just an unfinished rush job full of oversights, possibly affected by all those layoffs Epic did in September. Hopefully it’ll be updated sooner rather than later, but with the holidays in full swing I wouldn’t get my hopes up for any major fixes until January.

Have you ever been called a drama queen? Entered into serious self-examination? Dealt with real-life trauma and live to tell the tale? Well, it sounds like you, among with everyone on the planet, need therapy.

I can’t give that to you. You need a medical professional. What I can do is talk about films and TV shows that highlight these kinds of dramatic events and turn them into riveting storytelling.

Today, we’re going to dig into the drama, talk about how the genre works, find potential mashups, and look at a few examples in the entertainment world.

‘Crash’Sony

These are serious stories that hinge on events that regularly happen in everyday life. These film and TV series portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves, others, or forces of nature. They usually focus on character and how these people arc over time. Drama is regularly mashed up with other genres because most movies and tv rely on character-driven stories to keep the audience involved.

Tropes and expectations within the drama genre:

Dramas frequently follow characters you’d see as your friends, neighbors, and family dealing with the struggles of everyday life. They usually take place in a home, office setting, or with a group of characters forced to interact day to day.

Some of the topics of drama movies and tv are current events, societal ills, racial prejudice, religious intolerance, drugs, poverty, politics, alcoholism, class warfare, sexual inequality or assault, mental illness, and corrupt institutions.

Sometimes the center of the script also involves a love story.

Main characters

A dramatic film or television show shows us humans at their best and their worst. These kinds of films can be biopics based on real people or fictitious stories. They usually include a strong moral stance or view of the world around them. the characters in these films are always dealing with what life has to offer.

That can be as small as their brother moving home or as the Nazis taking over their enamelware factory.

Obstacles

While in other genres like action and comedy the characters need to perform physical feats, dramas are all about words and subtle actions. People here are focused on fixing themselves and those around them. While subgenres like courtroom dramas have a certain case they have to crack, most of these movies are about making personal choices that make the characters see the world in a new light.

Drama is all about conflict and how people deal with the world constantly in their way.

Setting

Any setting works inside a drama. You can have a period piece, something set in the modern-day, on an ocean, in space, the sky is the limit. If there’s conflict to be found, then a drams will be there.

Genre mash-up potential

The drama is the most versatile genre because it can apply to almost anything. Since humans and our problems can exist anywhere, drama will follow. you can even anthropomorphize animals or objects and have drama follow there too.

Because of the malleable nature of TV and film, it’s hard to find any straight dramas anymore. Instead, most storytelling thrives in one of the dramatic subgenres.

Dramas have a ton of subgenres:

  • Biopics – deals with the drams in one person’s life story. Think The Coal Miner’s Daughter.
  • Dramedy – the natural medling of comedy and drama to tell a character-driven story. Think Casual.
  • War – deals with how people react during battle. Think Saving Private Ryan.
  • Courtroom – deals with a case or series of cases that determine a person’s fate. Think To Kill a Mockingbird.
  • Family – follows a family as they deal with a crisis. Think Ordinary People.
  • Melodrama – follows a character(s) as they deal with high emotion scenarios. Something like Magnolia.
  • Contained – This occurs in one room or location where people live and work. Think Rope.
  • Political – What happens when a group of people tries to change the world? Think All the President’s Men.
  • Race relations – What was life like before or during the fight for equality? Think Green Book.
  • Romantic – Love has a ton of conflict and emotions to deal with. Think Meet Joe Black.
  • Religious – How do we see ourselves in perspective with a higher power? Think God’s Not Dead.
  • Sports – What does it take to be a winner? Think Invincible.
  • Showbiz – What’s the drama inherent within Hollywood? Think The Player.
  • Social problems – How do we deal with the changing social morays and problems? Think On the Waterfront.

Drama examples in film

A straightforward drama rarely exists anymore. Studios are putting less and less money and time into movies for adults. Those stories have moved to television, but recently we’ve seen an influx of streamers trying to engage with this sort of entertainment.

One of my favorite additions has been Kenneth Longeran’s powerful Manchester By the Sea.

The movie is quiet, contemplative, and dissects what happens to a man who’s lost everything. Juxtaposed against his story is that of his troubled teenage nephew, who has also suffered a great loss.

Can they get over it? Can they form a new family? Answers are not that easy inside this northeastern town.

The classic era of drama movies was probably the 1970s. American cinema saw a boom in these kinds of stories. One of the most memorable being a mashup between courtroom and family drama; Kramer vs. Kramer.

This story about a couple falling apart and a father trying to raise his son contain depths of the human spirit and the preconceived notions of mother and father.

Still, when I think about the “drama” section of Blockbusters of old, I am drawn to the classic dramatic films like Citizen Kane and 12 Angry Men.

These films thrived on complex moral questions and what lives inside a man’s heart.

One of the popular drama riffs is the melodrama. While some people use that word as a slight, these kinds of movies have always attracted the attention of viewers who want an intensely emotional experience.

Movies like the ones of Douglas Sirk, especially Imitation of Life, are wonderful dramatic films that some would classify as tearjerkers.

TV Drama Examples

As I mentioned above, modern drama lives on television and streamers. These complex character studies now take seasons to chase what we used to only find in a few hours. Shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Sopranos took popular movie drama subjects and turned the tide.

This is Us is still the most popular show on television, as people love crying along with the Pearsons.

TV dramas exist in hour-long procedurals, like Law and Order: SVU.

These show us a specific dramatic formula with every episode being a case ongoing characters solve.

But TV drama doesn’t have to only be an hour long.

Shoes like Barry, Transparent, and Dead to Me carry drama into comedy territory, with the dramedy subgenre filling out people’s quest for a deep show with some laughs. They don’t always have to be dark either. CBS’s God Friended Me adds a light drama into the mix, while still allowing audiences time to chuckle.

Film and TV genres affect who watches your work, how it’s classified, and even how it’s reviewed. So how do you decide what you’re writing? And which genres to mash-up? The secret is in the tropes.

Have you ever been called a drama

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 10 of “The Masked Singer,” “I Wanna Rock,” which aired Dec. 6 on Fox.

Ginuwine wasn’t sure he wanted to be on “The Masked Singer” when it first came calling. But the “Pony” artist ultimately couldn’t resist. “At first I said no, because I’m pretty much a loner type dude, I don’t like to be out in public like that a lot,” he told Variety. “But after a little bit of talking, I ended up saying yes. I wanted to come out of my comfort zone, do something that I hadn’t done.”

And indeed, “The Masked Singer” is unlike anything he or Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach had ever done. Ginuwine and Bach were revealed on Wednesday as the latest two celebrities to participate in Season 10 of “The Masked Singer.” Ginuwine was the Husky, while Bach was Tiki.

“I love singing, and honestly I saw some really cool friends of mine on the show — namely Dee Snider and Bret Michaels,” Bach said. “I’ve always loved a big production. I just went to the very last Kiss show at Madison Square Garden. And I’ve always loved costumes and make-up and smoke and lights. ‘The Masked Singer’ is definitely a big production with a lot of staging. Before I got on the show, I thought it was more about comedy and the costumes — which it is. But then when I did it, I found out it’s about the singing. I was very happy to be a part of it because I love to sing.”

For Husky, Nicole Scherzinger got it right with Ginuwine, and Robin Thicke agreed. Ken Jeong named Romeo Miller. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg thought it was Brian McKnight.

“I’m glad I definitely did it,” Ginuwine said. “It was challenging for me as far as the costume because it was truly heavy and hot. I’ve got asthma, and [the costume] dried me out a lot, so I couldn’t sing as I would normally sing outside of a mask. But I was able to get through it once I set my mind, just focus and get it done.”

As for Tiki, Nicole Scherzinger got this one right too, in naming Sebastian Bach. Robin Thicke went with Perry Farrell, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg named Adam Lambert and Ken Jeong went with Jon Bon Jovi.

“They let me choose, as much as they could, the songs that I was gonna sing,” Bach said. “Which made me happy because I got to do Elton John, “Magic” by Pilot and Lady Gaga. There was a couple other songs that I wanted to sing, but we couldn’t clear them in time. ‘The Final Countdown’ by Europe. I was going to slay you all with that one. I was asking to do some Journey and Led Zeppelin but those were pretty hard to clear.”

The singer with the evening’s least number of votes was Ginuwine as Husky. The remaining two contestants facing off in a battle royale (no longer a “smackdown”!) to determine who would move on to the finals, were Tiki and Sea Queen. The two contestants sang their own take on “Nothing But a Good Time,” by Poison.

Bach as Tiki was voted out after that, which means Sea Queen is Group B champion, and will meet Group A champion Cow and Group A “Ding Dong Keep It On” recipient Gazelle in the finals. Next up, the Group C Finals will be between Anteater, Candelabra and Donut.

It was “I Wanna Rock” night, and Poison frontman Bret Michaels, who previously appeared on the show as the Banana, performed “Nothing But a Good Time” before Tiki and Sea Queen did.

Sebastian Bach as Tiki and Ginuwine as Husky join Ashley Parker Angel as S’more, Metta World Peace as Cuddle Monster, Luann de Lesseps as Hibiscus, Tyler Posey as Hawk, Billie Jean King as Royal Hen, Michael Rapaport as Pickle, Tom Sandoval as Diver, Anthony Anderson as Rubber Ducky and one-time special guest Demi Lovato as Anonymouse as the Season 10 unmasked celebrities so far.

“The Masked Singer” features a new format this season, with three groups followed by Battle Royale semi-final episodes. The season also includes the return of Wild Card contestants, with one Wild Card introduced to each group, and the “Ding Dong Keep It On Bell” is back in the Battle Royale semi-final episodes, where the judges can choose to save one contestant from elimination and move them directly to the finale.

With sixteen total celebrity singers, Season 10 features new costumes including “Donut,” “Anteater,” “Hawk,” “Hibiscus,” “Diver,” “Gazelle,” “Royal Hen,” “Husky,” “Tiki,” “Pickle,” “Rubber Ducky,” “Candelabra,” “Cow,” “Sea Queen,” “Anonymouse” and a life-size “S’More.” Also returning to mark the show’s 10th are celebrities who have been previously unmasked since the show began. According to the show, Season 10 contestants “boast a combined 40 medals, 33 Grammy nominations, seven hall of fame awards, three lifetime achievement awards and over 50 tattoos.”

The season’s themed episodes will include a tribute to Elton John; a “Trolls Night” tied to the November release of DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls Band Together”; a “Harry Potter Night” airing the week of Halloween; “NFL Night”; “One Hit Wonders”; “Disco”; “2000s Night”; “I Wanna Rock”; and “Soundtrack of My Life.” Back for Season 10 are host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke.

Here were the other performances on this week’s episode:

Tiki, “The Masked Singer” (Michael Becker / Fox)
Pete Dadds

Tiki

Song: “I Was Made for Lovin’ You,” by Kiss

Panel guesses: Sebastian Bach, Perry Farrell, Adam Lambert

Clue: (Delivered by Kelly Osbourne) “Japan.” “I had the greatest time in Japan. I actually ran into Nicole Scherzinger there.”

Package voiceover: “Making it into the Group B finals after chugging my competition in the smackdown feels amazing. Especially since it’s rock night. My jam, baby. When I was a kid, my buddy asked me to join the choir. He told me if I got in, I’d get a $3 stipend every month. I said, what’s a stipend? But I knew $3 meant two more Kiss posters. So I auditioned, and because I had a super high-pitched voice, I was made lead soprano. At 8 years old, I hit the road, singing at churches all over. Who’d a thunk I’d be touring the rest of my life? So just goes to show, never pass up an opportunity, because you never know what it will lead you to. And now, finale! Here I come!”

Previous songs: “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” by Elton John; “Magic,” by Pilot

Previous panel guesses: John Stamos, David Lee Roth, Robert Plant, Dave Grohl, Jon Bon Jovi, Roger Daltry, Robert Plant

Husky, “The Masked Singer” (Michael Becker / Fox)
Pete Dadds

Husky

Song: “Always,” by Bon Jovi

Panel guesses: DJ D-Wrek. Ginuwine, Brian McKnight

Clue: “Wild.” “Well, Nick, this one’s for you. Sharing the stage with you again is wild.”

Package voiceover: “I’m so thankful to still be here rocking with you in the Group B finals. This has been a wild ride so far, but I wouldn’t change a thing. The loss of my biggest fans, my parents, when they passed away within a year of each other I completely lost my way. I did anything I could to numb the pain. My heart was twisted. But I had to find a way to live without them. I didn’t want my children to hurt the way I was hurting. So I made a change. I’ve always looked at myself as a strong man. But learning to cope in a healthier way took all the grace I have. Now I’ve never been more confident in the Husky I am today. And I know that tenacity will take me into the finale.”

Previous song: “Benny and the Jets,” by Elton John; “Superfreak,” by Rick James

Previous panel guesses: Babyface, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut, Tank, Ginuwine, Brian McKnight

Nick Cannon and Sea Queen, “The Masked Singer” (Michael Becker / Fox)
Pete Dadds

Sea Queen

Song: “To Be With You,” by Mr. Big

Panel guesses: Queen Latifah, Nicey Nash, Macy Gray, Viola Davis

Clue: (Presented by Kelly Osbourne). “Co-star.” “I was lucky enough to share the screen with Ken. Funny, not much has changed..”

Package voiceover: “Making my wild debut on Harry Potter night was truly a wild experience. And I’m so excited to rock with you all night. Because I was actually in a hard rock band once upon a time. I’ve lived a lot of different experiences. One I will always remember is when I got to co-star with Denzel Washington. I’ve been so surprised by how many Oscar winners I’ve worked with that bring their acting coaches to set! Funny sometimes how you think these big stars have it all figured out. But they’re still trying to learn and improve just like the rest of us. That’s my strategy for making it into the finale. Learn my songs and keep trying to improve as my Sea Queen self!”

Previous song: “Love Potion No. 9,” by The Searchers

Previous panel guesses: Erykah Badu, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Lewis

“The Masked Singer” is produced by Fox Alternative Entertainment, with James Breen (who is also showrunner), Craig Plestis and Cannon as executive producers.

Yahoo News and Yahoo Sports lost a number of staffers over the past week as part of the company’s overall goal to slash its workforce 20% by 2024. It also shuttered the Gen Z-centric In the Know video platform.

“We have ambitious plans for Yahoo in 2024 and beyond. As we work to elevate our category-leading properties to better serve customers, we need the right structure, talent and roles in place,” Sona Iliffe-Moon, a spokesperson for the Bay Area-based tech company, told The San Francisco Chronicle.

She added that the company is “transitioning roles that no longer align with our business needs.”

“We’ve made the difficult decision to make changes in several areas of the U.S. editorial team, which means we must part ways with some colleagues,” general manager Kat Downs Mulder wrote in an internal memo obtained by The Daily Beast.

Mulder said the decisions were “not made to cut costs, but to realign our resources and efforts to achieve our strategy [of] making Yahoo News the best place to go to find out what’s going on in the world and get things done.”

Yahoo News senior writer Ben Adler was among those who confirmed their layoffs on social media, as did Yahoo Sports writer Zach Crizer, who wrote on X, “Well, my time at Yahoo Sports is up. New management slashed my job — along with a bunch of other talented people’s….”

The layoff announcements were staggered over a few days, with some reporting they were laid off on Friday and others on Tuesday.

Kelsey Weekman, a writer for In the Know, lamented, “If I had a nickel for every time in 2023 the website i was working for got shut down, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right.” She was previously employed at BuzzFeed News, which was shut down in April.

Weekman added, “I’ll have a job elsewhere in the company, but I am devastated at the loss of so many more media jobs and of a GOOD WEBSITE.”

Mark Chrysafis, a freelance video producer for In the Know, posted on LinkedIn, “I’ve unfortunately been affected by layoffs.” He shared fond memories of “covering New York Comic-Con, reviewing toys and making videos about the coolest trends from all corners of the internet.”

Yahoo News did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

During Josie Ho’s recent visit to London as part of Odyssey 2023, I had the pleasure of interviewing her at the National Film and Television School, invited by the annual film festival’s organiser.

Hong Kong-born Josie Ho is an actress, executive producer, singer, and fashion designer who has been in over 50 films since her debut in 1994. She currently finances and produces cutting edge international projects via her company 852 Films, including a forthcoming feature film “Mother Tongue” collaborating with British director Mike Figgis.

Josie is best known for her work on screen – having starred in blockbuster movies in Hollywood such as Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ and other leading and award-winning roles across several Chinese and Hong Kong based films. Josie is one of the only Hong Kong based artists working on the international stage and will next appear in Roger Avary’s (co- writer of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs) new play Lucky Day and is also co-producing and starring alongside Jonathan Rhys Myers in a new period biopic Edge of the World..

How did you get into the business?

Well, in highschool I was a volleyball team captain, I was the number one setter (the player who runs the team’s offense). And, soon after I had finished high school in a rare chance encounter whilst out clubbing I bumped into this guy, Andy Wing-Keung Chin. He was a film director and he was trying to round up a bunch of girls to shoot a volleyball movie (Victory) and he said to me, “Josie, I heard you play volleyball”. That was it!

I said ‘yes’ and he asked me to come and work on the set as an actress. I thought, Yeah, why not? So, in that movie, because I played volleyball and I could also dive, I asked to do my own stunts. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. After working in the Philippines on ‘Victory’ I was given lots of offers. In general, they were quite light hearted projects and I wanted to portray more sophisticated characters; roles with more weight to them. So I started to go to acting classes and to do plays in Hong Kong with a group called Zuni. They performed all over the place and were very avant garde. I also worked with a New York Theatre director in Hong Kong. He chose me to play the lead role. It was during this rehearsal process that I learned a lot about acting. He was like a mentor and it was a great training ground.

I was like a sponge soaking everything up in those early days. I’m also curious and observe everything; each process that goes into the creation of something. If you’re like that you will learn quickly. And classical theater really is a great training ground in that regard. Also, I know I was a lucky girl to have these experiences at the beginning of my career. But you take what you get and you make the most out of it.

How has East Asian cinema changed globally since you started out?

Well, things have turned 180 degrees, they have totally changed and are this East Asian Cinema is much more widely accepted. Especially with what is coming out of Korea. These films and TV shows are very good. A lot of the filmmakers went to America for film school. The governments fully support them with all their economical needs. Coming from film schools really gives you a great background in the craft and theory of filmmaking and they come out with these big ideas but don’t always get the same budgets as the American studios. These restraints give people the chance to do things innovatively and to experiment. They come out of film school and make big commercial projects but I don’t think places like Korea or Japan are really into that or don’t have the scope for it. They want to show the culture and people in an interesting way. Korea certainly is putting lots of money into film and TV. And what the government is doing is working as people are really taking notice. It is an asset for the country.

Outside of Korea Is there a lot of funding for films in Hong Kong or other parts of Asia?

In Hong Kong, China, Japan or Thailand  the Governments don’t put so much funding into film. It is hard to look for money. So, these filmmakers have to get creative.

There is, of course, a commercial aspect to filmmaking but in countries where it is hard to find funding the filmmakers have become very good at shooting these bigger films with the mindset of an indie film which creates a really nice energy to the projects. And it is probably why they’re so successful – they are creative. And every choice is carefully considered.

A Guilty Conscience is a film made by a Hong Kong director (Jack Ng) who has a commercial background but he utilized the budget really well and to save money he shot it like an independent film. And this film made over (HK $)100 million. Hong Kong doesn’t have the audience/population to get that kind of return but people went to see it 2-3 times or even more. It really connected with audiences.

I also think Asian cinema has learned a lot from Japan. I think the abstract and crazy ideas still come from there and really influence what can be put on film.

What advice do you have for film makers looking for funding?

When you look for funding some studios or financiers will always try to make your idea as commercial as possible. I understand why (they want their money back).  And the filmmakers may listen and go with the idea of making it more commercially appealing to get the project made. But in my opinion this kills it. Tread carefully and keep those ideas that are close to you. That’s what will make the film great.

I really like the director Tsui Hark. He has been making films since the 1980s and he is still making films. He does big films but he is still original and keeps his voice. He can still be eccentric. Check out his work as a good example of what I mean.

How important is independent film these days with the rise in streaming platforms?

I think independent film is a platform that showcases a lot of new directors and new ideas. And it’s important because it is obviously trying to push the boundaries and it is edgy. It is how we make new discoveries, right? Without the edge the mainstream industry will become stale and boring. All the top filmmakers take all their best ideas from indie films.

Do you have any tips for Independent filmmakers?

I made a film called ‘Dream Home’. I don’t know how much money it made but I still get asked about it. It was a great experience. That’s the most important thing.

Inspiration comes from everywhere. From books, TV, Society, the news, music, art, clothes, accessories or perhaps private stories from people you’ve met and shared a moment with. Or something from your own life. Whatever you do or find, remember not to take it too seriously. Keep the humor alive within yourself. This is an art form at the end of the day and it is about playing. Big business can be too serious.

However, if you’re trying to raise money these days you have to be clever. You may have an opinion about society and want to stamp that on the film but tread a fine line. You don’t want to upset anyone, especially anyone that might finance your film. People are very cautious these days. You’ve got to be very skillful when pitching your film.

I alway like it when there is some violence and black humor in films so try to get that in there. I always loved Edgar Wright’s film ‘Shaun of the Dead’. That gets the balance just right and still makes you laugh.

That’s what 852 films (Josie’s production company in Hong Kong) are looking for. Films that are funny and don’t really hurt anyone.

Tell me a little about 852 films.

And our idea is to pull East and West together and to mix the two cultures together in film. Life is full of absurdities and I want more people to be talking about the absurd things in life as not enough people talk about these things.

Britain has unveiled new sanctions against arms suppliers in a bid to stop Russia mounting another offensive against Ukraine.

In recent months Vladimir Putin has militarised Russia’s economy with startling results, including a reported sevenfold increase in tank production.

Such increases in Russia’s military capability could render Ukraine vulnerable to further mass assaults by Kremlin forces thereby prolonging the conflict.

The fresh sanctions come as support for Ukraine among Western allies appears to flag.

The UK and other states have provided weapons and equipment worth tens of billions of pounds and undoubtedly these aid packages have prevented Russia taking over the country.

But after almost two years of fighting it appears Ukraine will be unable to remove the remaining Russian forces from its territory. As a result, pressure is mounting on its government to agree to peace talks.

Speaking exclusively to the Mail, the Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron said the sanctions would break Putin’s ‘international chain of suppliers’ and punish those who are ‘illicitly funding’ Russia’s war machine.

A tank T-64 drives by in Novoselivka Persha after driving out of Avdiivka, Ukraine, on December 4

Forty six new sanctions were unveiled today, targeting individuals and manufacturers in states such as Belarus, China, Serbia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.

By including companies operating in these states, the UK has now taken action against more than 30 third-country entities which are aiding Russia.

The UK is also targeting entities which support the Wagner paramilitary network and Russia’s so-called ‘shadow fleet’ of commercial shipping vessels.

Lord Cameron said: ‘No matter the lengths Putin goes to fuel his illegal invasion, we will meet every desperate move with strength, resilience and unity.

‘Together will our allies, we will break his international chain of suppliers, block attempts to evade sanctions and stop those who are illicitly funding the Kremlin’s despicable actions.

‘These sanctions will disrupt Putin’s ability to leverage international networks for his own gain. We are hitting his war effort where it hurts. Putin and his backers are outmatched.

‘The UK will not let up our economic pressure until Putin removes every last military boot from Ukrainian soil.’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, left, speaks with Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Cameron in Kyiv, Ukraine, on November 15

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky last week to reassure of Britain’s support.

However, the UK government’s £2.3 billion military aid package runs out in March 2024 and there has been no announcement that it will roll over for another 12 months.

Weapons stockpiles in the UK and in other NATO states are perilously low after gifting billions of pounds of military aid to Kyiv.

Today’s sanctions package includes 31 individuals and entities linked to production of drones and missiles, in particular suppliers of electronic components. The UK is sanctioning directors of these companies and their immediate family members.

These include the JSC Display Design Bureau based in Belarus, AVIO CHEM, a Serbian company said by Britain to have supplied aircraft parts to Russia and Turkey’s Smart Trading Limited, said to have supplied western electronics to Russia. Three Chinese companies have also been targeted.

Four UAE-based oil companies are also being sanctioned. They are said to have used opaque corporate structures to circumvent existing sanctions on Russian oil exports.

Kelly Ripa‘s daughter, Lola Consuelos, 22, makes sure to give her mom some stern advice before she goes on getaways with Mark Consuelos, 52! During the December 5 episode of Kelly’s podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera, the mother-of-three hilariously told actress Hilarie Burton the warning that Lola gives her before each trip. “You got to be careful with those away trips,” the LIVE co-host joked. “That’s how babies are made.”

The 53-year-old reportedly conceived her son, Joaquin, 20, while on vacation with Mark in the early 2000s, per Page Six. With that, Lola encourages her mother not to repeat the past ahead of each vacation. “Every time I go away now, my daughter is like, ‘Don’t get pregnant!’” Kelly shared. “Which is very funny because my daughter is so provocative.” The blonde beauty reassured listeners that she tells her daughter not to “worry about it,” however, she does clap back at Lola. “I’m like, ‘Don’t you get pregnant, how about that?’” Kelly quipped.

This is not the first time that Kelly discusses her romantic life with Mark on the podcast, as she previously revealed that Lola once walked in on her parents in the bedroom. “All I know is, at a certain point, I made eye contact with my 8-year-old daughter who is standing at the foot of the bed,” Kelly recalled during an episode this summer. She went on to call it “the ultimate horrible birthday present,” as it occurred on her special day.

Years later, in 2019, the incident repeated itself when Lola walked in on her parents amid their intimate moment on her 18th birthday. “So she opens the door … and we’re like ‘Ah, close the door, knock, what are you doing?” Mark recalled at the time. Kelly chimed in to add that they “ruined” Lola’s birthday that year. “She shuts the door and you hear, ‘You just ruined my birthday and my life and I used to see in color and now everything is gray,’” she joked. Lola then told her parents that they were “disgusting” and “had no chill.”

Aside from the podcast, Kelly recently took to Instagram on September 25 to celebrate her daughter. “It’s #NationalDaughtersDay and today we celebrate @TheYoungestyung Love you Lola!!!” the Hope and Faith alum captioned the carousel of photos. Kelly and her mini-me also posed for a selfie alongside their dog on August 26. “Enjoying #NationalDogDay with Lola and Lena in the dog days of summer,” she penned in the caption at the time. Kelly and her husband also share a son, Michael, 26.

Sony announced on Monday that it would remove all Discovery content, including shows like “MythBusters” and “Deadliest Catch,” from user libraries, even if they had been purchased on the PlayStation Store.

The company, which owns and operates PlayStation game consoles, said in a brief statement that the Discovery shows would be deleted on Dec. 31, attributing the decision to “our content licensing arrangements with content providers.”

The move came as Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns Discovery content, is seeking to add more subscribers to its Max and Discovery+ streaming services, in competition with others like Netflix and Disney+.

Users can also stream and buy content on the PlayStation.

More than 1,200 purchasable titles will be removed from the PlayStation store, Forbes reported, including “Cake Boss,” which followed the adventures of a family-owned bakery in New Jersey for over a decade, and “American Chopper,” a reality series about the hotheaded owners of the Orange County Choppers motorcycle garage.

Some PlayStation console users expressed frustration with Sony for taking away content that already had been purchased. One user posted on social media that they were expecting a full refund for products bought on the PlayStation. Another wrote that the message from Sony to customers was essentially, “If you ‘purchased’ any of these titles via PlayStation, they are going to disappear soon and too bad for you.”

Sony did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

The erasure of Discovery content has raised questions about what it means to “own” digital products and highlighted how customers are increasingly at the mercy of licensing arrangements between media companies and online stores.

PlayStation Network’s terms of service states that “all content” provided, including on the PlayStation Store, is “licensed on a nonexclusive and revocable basis.”

Users of other streaming services and devices have lobbed similar complaints at companies, including some e-book owners this year who learned that buying an e-book does not really mean it’s theirs.

Automatic e-book updates, which are a common feature of many popular platforms including Amazon’s Kindle Store and Google Play, caused some references and sentences to be changed in the works of popular authors such as Roald Dahl, R.L. Stine and Agatha Christie.

Last year, the PlayStation Store also removed StudioCanal films and TV shows from devices in Austria and Germany despite user purchase, citing “evolving licensing agreements,” The Verge reported.

Sony announced on Monday that it would

Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy — she the star of “Barbie,” he of “Oppenheimer” — have shared an experience, one unique in film history. On July 21, 2023, their two movies came out, and instead of cannibalizing one another during a time when box office receipts were sluggish, they actually boosted each other, creating the global phenomenon known as “Barbenheimer.”

On paper, the two movies couldn’t be more different. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” produced by Robbie’s company LuckyChap Entertainment, is the story of the world’s most popular doll, who, after going on a journey to recover from an existential crisis, becomes a woman; Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is a biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who oversaw the invention of the atomic bomb. What they have in common, though, is that their directors made wholly original films, ones guided by their inventiveness, and it was the innovative spirit of “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” that in turn inspired audiences to be creative and participatory in their fandom for both films. The memes, the double-feature TikToks, the costumes people wore to go out to theaters again and again to experience Barbenheimer — after COVID had nearly destroyed in-person moviegoing — “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” proved joy is still to be had (as well as profits, with the box office for “Barbie” at more than $1.4 billion worldwide, and “Oppenheimer” recently crossing $950 million).

In other words, Robbie, sporting a “Barbie”-inspired pink polka-dot shirt with matching heels, and a darkly clad Murphy have a lot to discuss when they meet for Actors on Actors — a rendezvous during which Murphy professes he now knows what a meme is, after famously claiming ignorance about them in a 2017 interview.

CILLIAN MURPHY: Congratulations on your reasonably successful film. You’re a producer on the movie as well. How did you know a “Barbie” movie would connect with audiences in the manner that it did?

MARGOT ROBBIE: Yeah, 90% of me was certain that this would be a big deal and a massive hit, and 10% of me thought, “Oh, this could go so badly wrong.” It was all about Greta Gerwig. And it was like, “If it wasn’t going to be Greta, then, yeah, this could have been an absolute disaster.”

MURPHY: She was always your first choice?

ROBBIE: I just wasn’t going to let her say no. It was about six years ago we got the property. We got it out of Sony, set it up at Warner Bros., got Mattel’s blessing to let us produce, then went after Greta. Obviously, I didn’t know it was going to be the cultural phenomenon that it ended up being.

MURPHY: When did you realize that?

ROBBIE: It was all the way along. The fact that it’s Greta Gerwig, people are like, “Greta Gerwig and a ‘Barbie’ movie, what?” And then the pictures of Ryan Gosling and me Rollerblading on Venice Beach came out and went even wider than I was expecting. I’d been thinking big for it, and it still turned out bigger than I expected.

But what about you? Did you think so many people were going to watch a movie about the making of the atomic bomb?

MURPHY: No. I don’t think any of us did. Christopher Nolan was always determined that it would be released in the summer as a big tentpole movie. That was always his plan. And he has this superstition around that date, the 21st.

ROBBIE: Do all his movies come out on that date?

MURPHY: In and around the 21st of July — they always come out then.

ROBBIE: It’s a good date. We picked that day too!

MURPHY: Yeah, I know.

ROBBIE: One of your producers, Chuck Roven, called me, because we worked together on some other projects. And he was like, “I think you guys should move your date.” And I was like, “We’re not moving our date. If you’re scared to be up against us, then you move your date.” And he’s like, “We’re not moving our date. I just think it’d be better for you to move.” And I was like, “We’re not moving!” I think this is a really great pairing, actually. It’s a perfect double billing, “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie.”

MURPHY: That was a good instinct.

ROBBIE: Clearly the world agreed. Thank God. The fact that people were going and being like, “Oh, watch ‘Oppenheimer’ first, then ‘Barbie.’” I was like, “See? People like everything.” People are weird.

MURPHY: And they don’t like being told what to do. They will decide, and they will generate the interest themselves.

ROBBIE: I think they were also really excited by the filmmakers. People were itching for the next Chris Nolan film and itching for the next Greta Gerwig film. To get them at the same time was exciting. You’ve done five movies with Christopher Nolan now, right?

MURPHY: This is six, actually.

ROBBIE: So you like the guy? A big fan.

MURPHY: It seems to work. This is the first time playing a proper lead role for him. There’d always been supporting parts over the years — it’s 20 years we’re working together. Emma Thomas, his wife, the producer, she called me because Chris doesn’t have a phone. So she put me on to Chris, and he said in his very understated British way, “I’m making this movie of Oppenheimer — I’d like you to play the part.” I had just finished something; I wasn’t doing anything. I did realize then that it was different than the other jobs I’d done with him, because it was the story of Oppenheimer’s life. And then when he eventually gave me the script, it was written in the first person, which I’d never read before, and so I —

ROBBIE: The script was written in the first person? The big print would be like, “I’m going to put the cup down and walk towards the door”?

MURPHY: Exactly, exactly. Which I’d never read before. And so it was very clear that he wanted it to be truly subjective storytelling. And that did add to the feeling of “Oh, fuck, this is a biggie.”

ROBBIE: Why do you love working with him? And why do you think he loves working with you? I know you’re going to have to maybe be really humble and be like, “I don’t know, why does he like me? I can’t understand.” Take a guess.

MURPHY: With Chris, it’s just the work. He’s not interested in anything else other than the work and the filmmaking. And he’s incredibly focused, and it’s incredibly rigorous.

ROBBIE: When he called you and said, “Movie about Oppenheimer,” were you like, “Gotcha”? Or were you like, “Who’s that? I should go read a book.”

MURPHY: I knew the very basic Wikipedia level. I knew about the Trinity tests, and I knew about the Manhattan Project and then obviously what happened in ’45. But I didn’t know what happened afterwards or anything like that.

ROBBIE: So you read a lot to prep. What else did you do?

MURPHY: Walk around my basement talking to myself.

ROBBIE: Really? I prep like a psychopath as well. Did you have a thing that would get you into him?

MURPHY: Physically, there was loads of pictures of him, and he always stood with his hand on his hip. He was such a slight man, but he always stood with this very kind of jaunty angle. So I nicked that pretty early as a physical thing. And then Chris Nolan kept sending me pictures of David Bowie, like in the Thin White Duke era, with the big voluminous trousers.

And how about you? Such a difficult character. It’s this kind of 20th-century icon, but not a real person. How did you figure it out?

ROBBIE: It was so weird prepping Barbie as a character. All my usual tools didn’t apply for this character. I work with an acting coach, and I work with a dialect coach, and I work with a movement coach, and I read everything, and I watch all the things. I rely on animal work a lot. I was maybe 45 minutes into pretending to be a flamingo or whatever, and I was suddenly like, “It’s not working.”

I went to Greta, like, “Help me. I don’t know where to start with this character.” And she’s like, “OK, what are you scared of?” And I was like, “I don’t want her to seem dumb and ditzy, but she’s also not meant to know anything. She’s meant to be completely naive and ignorant.” And Greta found this episode on “This American Life,” where it was a woman who can’t introspect, who doesn’t have the voice in her head that’s constantly narrating life the way we all do. This woman’s got a Ph.D. and is extremely smart, but just doesn’t have that internal monologue.

MURPHY: Is she happy?

ROBBIE: Yeah, totally.

MURPHY: Is she happier, do you think?

ROBBIE: Oh God, I wondered about that. She kind of thinks about exactly what’s in front of her — a spotlight to what exactly is in front of her at the time.

MURPHY: Well, that’s perfect, right? We should talk about the costumes. So you’re clearly still not sick of pink then?

ROBBIE: No, I’m not done with pink yet. Yeah, the costumes were incredible. I mean, you just can’t have a “Barbie” movie without the color pink. And everyone really got on board with that. I’d make a “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” day. Do you know that reference from “Mean Girls”?

MURPHY: I had forgotten that reference.

ROBBIE: On Wednesdays, they wear pink. And so if you didn’t wear pink on set, you got a fine. And then I’d donate it to charity. It’s always the guys, I feel like, that are like, “Oh, finally I have permission to wear pink and get dressed up!” It would get crazier and crazier until Ryan would be like, “I think I need a mink.” It would just get insane.

In my opinion, there are two kinds of people in this world. There are the people who are obsessed with “Peaky Blinders,” and then there’s the people who haven’t seen “Peaky Blinders.” I obviously sit in the first category, so can we please talk about Tommy fucking Shelby for just one minute? I mean, that was years and years of your life.

MURPHY: Yeah, it’s like 10. That was also a 10-year adventure. We started shooting at the end of 2012.

ROBBIE: Is there going to be a spinoff movie?

MURPHY: I mean, I’m open to the idea. I’ve always thought that if there’s more story to tell …

ROBBIE: Please do it. Please! Obviously, I’ve now revealed that I am a big fan of yours, not just “Peaky Blinders.” I also love your sleep story on the Calm app. But because I’m a fan of yours, I have watched a lot of your things on YouTube, and it’s out there on the internet that you are not that aware of memes and things like that. First of all, is that true? And second of all, if that is true, were you even aware of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, or were you just blissfully unaware because you use a dial-up phone or something?

MURPHY: I have two teenage boys. I do know what a meme is. Now I know that there are memes about me not knowing what a meme is.

ROBBIE: It’s a great meme. It’s like the “Inception” of memes. A meme within a meme.

MURPHY: Genuinely at the time I did not know. But people forget that was a long time ago.

ROBBIE: I might not have known back then what a meme is. I’m not that tech-savvy.

MURPHY: Exactly. And I think children started that stuff, right? Now that it’s become this sort of meme that’s eating itself, I am aware. But it’s mostly because of people either sending it to me or showing me and saying, “Look, you gotta look at this.”

ROBBIE: You see any of the Barbenheimer fan art?

MURPHY: I mean, it was impossible to avoid any of that stuff.

ROBBIE: Weren’t there some great ones? People are so clever. People kept asking me, “So is each marketing department talking to each other?” And I was like, “No, this is the world doing this! This is not a part of the marketing campaign.”

MURPHY: And I think it happened because both movies were good. In fact, that summer, there was a huge diversity of stuff in the cinema, and I think it just connected in a way that you or I or the studios or anybody could never have predicted.

ROBBIE: You can’t force that or orchestrate that.

MURPHY: No, and it may never happen again.

Pony up because the Husky has been unmasked! Husky’s identity was revealed during the December 6 episode of The Masked Singer. Ginuwine, best known for his song “Pony,” was the first celebrity of “I Wanna Rock” Night to be revealed, followed by Sebastian Bach as Tiki. Hollywood Life spoke exclusively with Ginuwine, 53, about hitting the stage as the Husky.

“At first I said no [to the show] because that’s just not my thing to do stuff like that,” Ginuwine said. “But after a while, I asked a couple people what they thought about it and, of course, I actually watched the show. I’m definitely a fan of the show. But I don’t even watch my own movies. It’s just a weird thing. It just was like, you know, come out of your comfort zone. Try something new. And so I did.”

Ginuwine, whose real name is Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, dazzled the panelists with his previous performances of hits by Elton John and Rick James. For “I Wanna Rock” Night, the singer jammed out to “Always” by Bon Jovi. Robin Thicke guessed Ginuwine’s identity correctly before the big reveal.

For the singer, the furry and very bulky Husky costume was the biggest challenge of The Masked Singer. “That was one of the journeys that I had to conquer and overcome because it was very heavy, but I thought that it was really, really built,” he said. “It was really nice, but it was very, very heavy and very hot. So I had to maneuver through those obstacles.”

He added, “The show didn’t challenge me too much as an artist or performer. The challenging part was just the suit. Once the lights and people came on I would do what I do every weekend.”

Performing in a massive Husky costume was no simple feat. “I just had to get used to it,” the “So Anxious” singer said. “Anything that I try, I try to see it through. I don’t like to get beat. I just manned up and took it and did what I had to do to get through as far as I could get.” The Masked Singer season 10 airs Wednesdays on FOX.

When the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival opens on Jan. 18, filmmakers ranging from veterans like Steven Soderbergh to newcomers like the acclaimed painter Titus Kaphar and the rising director Sean Wang will debut new work. Their movies are among 82 features representing 24 countries, a lineup that serves as a snapshot of the current state of independent cinema, which has long been challenged by distribution difficulties and financing struggles.

The films, chosen from 4,410 submissions, include some intriguing starry entries. Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun play, in ways that aren’t clear, a buoy and a satellite that fall in love in “Love Me,” while the Zellner brothers’ darkly comedic family drama “Sasquatch Sunset” features Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough personifying sasquatches, which Eisenberg said in a recent interview come replete with extra body hair and lots of grunts.

Eugene Hernandez, officially the festival director for the first time this year, said, “I’m super excited that international independent storytelling feels so vital and risky and bold and adventurous.” He added, “There are really big swings and bold choices, and that’s coming from established directors who have a history with the festival but also from this new class of discoveries.”

Soderbergh and Sundance have been intertwined since his “Sex, Lies and Videotape” debuted there in 1989, a transformative moment for independent film, when a new aesthetic of simple sets and provocative subject matter became cornerstones.

This year, he will premiere “Presence,” starring Lucy Liu and Julia Fox, about a family that moves into a suburban home and discovers they are not alone. Hernandez called it “as fresh and inventive as anything he’s made in his career.”

Another Sundance veteran, Richard Linklater, will show “God Save Texas,” an anthology documentary series that highlights his perspective on his home state as well as that of his fellow filmmakers Alex Stapleton and Iliana Sosa.

Other high-profile documentaries include “Girls State,” a companion piece to “Boys State” from Apple, and fresh takes on the musical acts Devo and Luther Vandross. “Will & Harper,” from the “Strays” director, Josh Greenbaum, chronicles Will Ferrell’s road trip across America with Harper Steele, a “Saturday Night Live” veteran and his close friend of 30 years who is coming out as a trans woman.

First-time filmmakers make up 40 percent of this year’s program, with anticipation building for Wang, a Sundance Institute alumnus, whose “Didi” centers on an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy. Kaphar, 47, a MacArthur Fellowship winner, who is known for provocative paintings of historical figures, will debut his first film, “Exhibiting Forgiveness” starring André Holland and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. Both movies are appearing in the U.S. Dramatic Competition.

Since the pandemic began, Sundance has offered a digital version of the festival. This year, some titles will become available on Jan. 25, including all the films in competition. “This will allow people from everywhere in the U.S. to participate and engage with the festival,” said Joana Vicente, the Sundance Institute chief executive.

Eighty percent of the films don’t have distribution yet, including “Between the Temples,” from Nathan Silver (“The Great Pretender”). It tracks a cantor, played by Jason Schwartzman, who is having a crisis of faith when his grade-school music teacher (Carol Kane) re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student. And “My Old Ass,” Megan Park’s second feature, stars Maisy Stella (“Nashville) as a young woman who meets her older self during a mushroom trip the summer before college. Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, one of the companies behind “Barbie” and “Saltburn,” produced it.

To Kim Yutani, the director of programming, the number of unsold films is a positive sign. “It’s really encouraging just to know that we can convene the industry in Park City and know that there’s a lot to be discovered and hopefully be bought and go on to meet other audiences beyond Sundance,” she said.

But filmmakers who overcame long odds to enter the festival may find it daunting to know they can still walk away without distribution. Last week, the two filmmakers behind “Fancy Dance,” a 2023 Sundance debut starring Lily Gladstone, who is having a moment with “Killers of the Flower Moon,” wrote a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter. It noted that their film, which received strong reviews, has still not sold. “We are left mystified by the disconnect between our apparent success and an industry-supported distribution push,” they wrote.

The same will probably be true for many of this year’s contenders. Yet, Yutani said, there should be more than one definition of success.

“A lot of filmmakers come in with very realistic expectations,” she said. “Some of them want representation, and we make very deliberate efforts to introduce our filmmakers to industry, whether they be acquisitions people or managers and agents. A lot of them see success at other festivals. There are so many different paths of success. Of course, the biggest ones are around those huge deals but there’s so much other activity that happens on the ground during the festival.”

Bob Iger just made some interesting comments, as did Taika Waititi and Tom Holland.

Most importantly, Marvel has made the right hire for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Let’s discuss all the intrigue in MarvelBlog News.

From Loki to Kang

Victor Timely needs to go faster in Loki Season Two, Episode SixVictor Timely needs to go faster in Loki Season Two, Episode Six

There’s no rest for the weary, especially not when it comes to superheroes.

Michael Waldron is still in the middle of his victory lap for what he accomplished with the two seasons of Loki.

Marvel isn’t going to let the writer finish taking his bows, though.

Source: Marvel Studios

Instead, Kevin Feige has provided Waldron with his next assignment, and it’s a doozy.

Waldron is now in charge of the screenplay for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

I know that you have questions, but I’ll be blunt that we don’t have many answers yet.

The Kang Dynasty posterThe Kang Dynasty poster

Here’s what we do know. Waldron created the two seasons of Loki to bookend one another.

Loki started at one place as a recently deceased villain who viewed humans as insects.

After taking a long look in the mirror – and at several of his variants – Loki evolved into someone willing to sacrifice everything for humanity.

While the failure of The Marvels muted some of the praise for Loki, many critics regard its season two finale as one of the high points of the MCU to date.

Waldron turned Loki into a hero – or possibly an antihero – by pitting him against an even scarier force, He Who Remains, the final Kang variant.

The two characters faced off at the end of season one and again in the climactic episode of season two.

So, who would be better to write an entire movie about Kang than Waldron?

That’s Marvel’s thinking here, and it’s not as big a risk as you might expect.

After all, Waldron has already written one successful Marvel movie, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which earned $956 million in box office.

Of course, Marvel expects much more from an Avengers movie. So, Feige has tasked Waldron with course-correcting the MCU.

What to Expect with The Kang Dynasty

Waldron will focus on the script, which was already a work in progress.

As a reminder, Jeff Lovegood just left the project as its writer, and Destin Daniel Cretton won’t direct the film, either.

So, Waldron is technically taking over for others, but he really has something of a clean slate here.

Source: Marvel

Marvel is currently awaiting the outcome of the Jonathan Majors trial, which started the other day.

In the interim, Waldron must create a screenplay that will conclude – or possibly elevate – the story of the Kang variants.

Presumably, he’ll set up another writer to complete the Multiversal Saga in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Source: Marvel

However, it’s equally possible that Waldron will work on both projects. After all, he is the hottest storyteller at Marvel right now.

Recent reports suggest that Doctor Doom will work as the backup plan if Marvel ditches Kang, although my understanding is that both will participate.

We should know more once the Majors trial ends. If he gets convicted, I just don’t think Marvel can stick with him. Should he win, well, who knows?

Iger Said What?

Source: Marvel

I have a dear friend who owns a comic book store, and he recently called on several of his friends to explain something he’d heard.

A somewhat misconstrued report had suggested that Bob Iger, the CEO of Marvel’s parent company, Disney, had thrown Nia DaCosta under the bus.

Specifically, he’d heard that Iger suggested DaCosta hadn’t run the set for The Marvels effectively.

The best poster for The MarvelsThe best poster for The Marvels

Image: Marvel

That’s mostly true, albeit with a caveat. Here’s what Iger actually stated at a recent financial event:

“The Marvels was shot during Covid. There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”

Critics pointed out that Iger made no such comments about Peyton Reed, the director of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is objectively the worse movie.

The Marvels contemplate what went wrongThe Marvels contemplate what went wrong

Image: Marvel

Similarly, Iger didn’t mention James Mangold, who worked on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at the time.

Instead, Iger’s comments unintentionally singled out an African American female, which is a bad look.

However, I believe that’s not what the CEO intended here. Instead, he was discussing the unprecedented challenges of filming during a pandemic.

Kamala Khan has quite the active imaginationKamala Khan has quite the active imagination

Image: Marvel

Every day, filmmakers had to wait for COVID-19 tests to know who would be available to work in front of and behind the camera.

As longtime industry veterans, Mangold and Reed had previously worked on massive blockbusters.

Before The Marvels, DaCosta’s biggest budget was $25 million for Candyman as opposed to $220 million for the Marvel film.

You won't believe why Carol Danvers is wearing this. You won't believe why Carol Danvers is wearing this.

Image: Marvel

As such, Iger is saying that she could have used more help. Given the performances of Quantumania and Dial of Destiny, Mangold and Reed could have, too.

The pandemic really set back everyone in the industry, and it’s Iger’s mistake to single anybody out.

Marvel Miscellany

We’ve got a couple of other big stories this week, one of which will make you smile. The other will cause your inner cynic to howl with derision.

The funny story involves Taika Waititi, whom Marvel recently wished well in his future endeavors.

No, Marvel hasn’t fired the director, but he also won’t be returning for Thor 5 despite having helmed the two most recent Thor films.

Source: Marvel San Diego Comic-Com 2019

I guess Gwyneth Paltrow would call that a conscious uncoupling?

Anyway, Waititi has taken an honest approach in describing his Marvel relationship.

According to the director, he wasn’t the least bit interested in filming Thor: Ragnarok. So, why did he make the movie? Here’s his explanation:

“It wasn’t on my plan for my career as an auteur. But I was poor and I’d just had a second child, and I thought, ‘You know what, this would be a great opportunity to feed these children.’”

That’s right, folks! He did it for the children! What a hero.

The more ridiculous assertion comes from Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland.

Source: Marvel Studios

For no apparent reason, the actor has come out and said that he’ll only return as Spider-Man if the story “find(s) a way to do justice to the character.”

Do you know he’ll find that justice for the character? Sony and Marvel will wire $20 million to his bank account. At that point, he will love the story.

Also, this is the type of quote that gets held against somebody if/when they make a sequel that isn’t up to snuff.

Source: Marvel Studios

Holland will learn from this but even if he had the best of intentions with the quote, it’s an unforced error.

There was a lot of that going around with Marvel this past week.

Summary

  • Godzilla Minus One is being hailed as a kaiju masterpiece, having debuted with a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Critics appreciate how the film takes Godzilla back to its roots in post-WWII Japan, capturing the iconic monster’s essence.
  • While there is some criticism of the film for not addressing contemporary issues, overall, it is praised for its compelling story, stunning cinematography, and entertaining nature.

Toho’s 33rd Godzilla film, Godzilla Minus One, could be the best one yet, as following its Rotten Tomatoes debut with a perfect 100%, the movie continues to hold a 97% critic’s score and 98% audience rating. Now the mighty monster movie is following its record-breaking debut with an extended run at the U.S. box office, remaining in cinemas until at least December 14. This follows the news that the newest outing for Japan’s biggest movie export has broken another record, by taking the #1 spot in the U.S. chart on Monday – the first time a foreign movie has done so since 2004’s Jet Li movie, Hero.

When it comes to the unexpected success of the movie, there are several key factors. Godzilla Minus One opened in more theaters than other recent Toho entries in the franchise, landing in 2308 cinemas on its opening weekend in comparison to the 490 that Shin Godzilla opened in back in 2016, and even higher than Godzilla 2000, released in 2000. However, another big boost for the movie has been the reviews, which have been nothing short of exceptional.

To take a look at some of these, we begin with Katie Rife of IGN Movies, who praised Godzilla Minus One for taking the iconic monster back to its roots.

“A rousing, spectacle-filled blockbuster, Godzilla: Minus One takes the king of the monsters back to his roots in post-WWII Japan. The story is character-driven, but the monster scenes are exciting and effective.”

Sarah Musnicky of But Why Tho? A Geek Community awards the Godzilla movie a near-perfect 9/10 and commends it for reminding audiences why they fell in love with the legendary titan in the frst place.

“Godzilla Minus One is a reminder to audiences why we fell in love with this kaiju, but also the universe in which it resides.”

Screen International’s Tim Grierson meanwhile also praised Godzilla Minus One for going back to the roots of what made the monster so iconic.

“Godzilla Minus One returns the titular beast to its roots as a metaphor for Japan’s postwar anxiety and grief, in the process delivering a stirring spectacle that also contains a palpable emotional undercurrent.”

A somewhat more negative take comes courtesy of Matt Schley of Japan Times, who, in stark contrast to other reactions, felt that taking Godzilla back to the past holds the movie back.

“Visually, Godzilla Minus One evokes the original film more than any Godzilla film since the ’50s. But by locating itself in the past, it avoids taking on contemporary issues, more content to be an entertaining ride.”

Back to the applause, and John Nguyen of Nerd Reactor calls Godzilla Minus One the “best Godzilla film” since the original.

“The result is the best Godzilla film since the original 1954 film thanks to the compelling story, Godzilla doing what Godzilla does best, wonderful cast, and stunning cinematography.”

Finally, Aaron Neuwirth of We Live Entertainment calls Godzilla Minus One a “blast” that manages to continue the quality found in 2016’s Shin Godzilla.

“Having to follow up 2016’s excellent Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Minus One is now in the position of having to keep the good faith from the original studio’s investment with this giant movie monster going. Fortunately, this film is a blast and then some.”

Godzilla Minus One stars Ryunosuke Kamiki (Your Name.), Minami Hamabe (Shin Kamen Rider), Yuki Yamada (Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar), Munetaka Aoki (The Roundup: No Way Out), Hidetaka Yoshioka (Dr. Kotō Shinryōjo), Sakura Ando (Monster), and Kuranosuke Sasaki (My Home Hero).

“After the war, Japan’s economic state has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state.”

Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One was released theatrically in Japan to huge success on November 3, with Toho’s American subsidiary Toho International set distribution of the movie in the U.S. to begin on December 1, and the movie has been a surprising boost to the start of the month. Now it looks like Godzilla is going to continue to roar in theaters for another week, and possibly beyond. The Baldur’s Gate 3 official Twitter account revealed on December 5 all manner of player stats accrued since the game’s release in August. These include the likes of how many players have finished the game and how many have made it through Honour Mode. The most important, however, include how many times Scratch the dog has been petted and how many players have become sentient cheese wheels.

According to the latest statistics, 1.3 million players have conquered Baldur’s Gate 3, which is an already staggering number in its own right. It’s accompanied by an absolutely mind-boggling total playtime of over 452 million hours—or almost 52,000 years. In addition, out of approximately 158,000 Honour Mode playthroughs, 464 have been completed successfully, and more than 34,000 have fallen.

Alongside these more serious stats are some more lighthearted ones, including the fact that over 1.24 million players have, at some point, transformed into a sentient cheese wheel. Even larger numbers crop up, such as 2 million players “surviv[ing] a dinosaur attack” and the ever-important knowledge that Scratch has been petted 48.5 million times.

These are outstanding numbers, but players are still discovering new details in Baldur’s Gate 3. Since the thread has gone live, numerous Twitter users have expressed shock over the existence of a dinosaur in the game and even over the ability to turn into cheese. In addition, some users have referenced how they’ve contributed to the numbers, both seriously and jokingly.

User @lulapinn jokes about the mind-boggling 8196 total years spent in the Character Creator being mostly from them, a sentiment I feel in my very bones.

Other noteworthy stats from the Baldur’s Gate 3 account Tweet include Gale being “the most played Origin character in the game, closely followed by Astarion” at over 446,000 and 424,000 selections, respectively. When it comes to romance, Shadowheart’s romance arc has been completed by more than 51% of players, although 66% of players who were given the option “request[ed] that Halsin bare all—not bear all.”

The Larian Studios official Twitter account confirmed on November 15 that the Xbox release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 will be revealed at the upcoming Game Awards show on December 7. It will be fascinating to see how these stats grow and change once Baldur’s Gate 3 releases for Xbox Series X|S.

UPDATED: NBC and Fox posted online the

Jonathan Majors’ ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, shared her perspective about the events of March 25 and the aftermath in testimony on Tuesday and Wednesday. Majors faces charges of assault and aggravated harassment after an altercation between them in a moving vehicle. Both the prosecution and defense agree that Jabbari noticed a text message on his phone and then grabbed it from his hands. But Majors and Jabbari have differing accounts of how the altercation unfolded.

Jabbari testified that she noticed a message on Majors’ screen from someone called “Cleopatra” that read “Oh, how I wish to be kissing you.” Majors insisted that “it’s not what it looks like,” but Jabbari was “taken aback”: “Of all the problems in the relationship, I never thought that infidelity would be one of them,” she said (via Business Insider).

Jabbari grabbed the phone to see the messages, and then “felt the weight of him on top of me. I felt him trying to pry the phone away from me,” she recounted. “Next, I felt like a really hard blow across my head. It felt like a hard impact to the back of my head. I felt a lot of pain and I sat back and that’s when he got the phone back from my hand.” The defense has claimed that Jabbari was the aggressor and tore the actor’s jacket; Jabbari admitted that in the struggle “I grabbed him and pulled the button off his jacket and he yelled, became angry and yelled, ‘Look what you have done.’”

Jabbari said she tried multiple times to get out of the car, and in one instance Majors forcibly threw her back in “like a football.” When she finally got out of the vehicle, she left with strangers who promised to help get her a ride. She went with them to a birthday party, where she had some shots and bought her helpers champagne (per The Daily Beast). Majors, meanwhile, retreated to a hotel and texted her to break up.

Jabbari’s testimony indicates that both she and Majors were conflicted about the end of their relationship—he allegedly called to say he loved her and didn’t cheat, but said he’d deleted “Cleopatra’s” messages, so Jabbari hung up. She then felt she’d “been irrational” for cutting off their conversation and tried “for a really long time” to get back in touch. When he didn’t respond, she took sleeping pills to go to bed, but woke up a few hours later in “pain” and went to the bathroom. According to The Daily Beast, Jabbari testified that she passed out on the bathroom floor after throwing up from exhaustion and pain.

When she woke up, she was surrounded by law enforcement officers (as Majors had called 911 after returning to their apartment and finding her on the floor). “I was totally overwhelmed,” she said. “The last thing I had in my memory was being alone, being safe-ish. And this was so overwhelming. Being a woman, half-naked, and surrounded by strange men, was not the nicest feeling I’ve ever experienced in my life.”

Jabbari, who is white, hesitated to fully explain the situation upon waking up: “I think just things he had told me in the past about not trusting the police and what they would do to him as a Black man, and I didn’t want to put him in that situation. I wanted to say, ‘Help me, please.’” She claimed she alluded to her trouble “in the safest way I felt possible,” but was aware of Majors being in the next room. “I didn’t want to say exactly what happened, but I also saw this as a moment to have a bit of help in leaving the relationship. I was just really scared.”

Even after she was taken to the hospital, and after she left the hospital, Jabbari says she felt “guilty” that she had told on Majors; when she found out he was arrested, she felt like it was “her fault.” “It was so confusing, and I loved him still. I felt like I should have lied and said nothing happened so that he wasn’t in trouble. I knew that he would be upset with me, and I just wanted to fix it.”

Jabbari reportedly cried as she reflected on the impact of the highly publicized case, as well as her own arrest (following Majors’ cross-complaint). “There’s just been a lot of unwanted attention about a very difficult period of my life,” she said (via People). “I’m a very private person. It’s been really hard, the show of it all. It feels like the abuse I was in hasn’t ended.”

George R.R. Martin revealed that planning for the third and fourth seasons of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” is underway.

In a Wednesday blog post, the author updated fans on his recent trip to the U.K. where he visited the studio where “Game of Thrones” spin-off series was filmed, and spent a couple days prepping for the upcoming installments of the show, which have yet to be officially renewed by HBO.

“I also spent two days locked in a room with [showrunner] Ryan Condal and his writing staff (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of ‘House of the Dragon,’” Martin wrote. “They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done… though two days was not nearly enough. There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure twenty days would have been enough.”

After delaying his planned visit due to the WGA strike this summer, Martin paid a visit to the “House of the Dragon” Season 2 set, which he recalled as even more impressive than the “Game of Throne” shoots in Belfast, Scotland, Morocco and Malta.

“Nothing I have ever seen can compare with the Red Keep and Dragonstone sets they have built at Leavesden Studios in London,” Martin wrote. “HUGE, stunning, and so damned real that I felt as if I had gone through a time portal to medieval Westeros. I love castles and have visited dozens of actual medieval castles, keeps, and towers in my time, and none of the real castles I’ve ever seen can hold a candle… or a torch… to our Red Keep.”

The highlight of the trip, however, was when Condal gave Martin a “sneak preview” of the rough cuts of the first two episodes of “HoTD” Season 2, which he called “powerful,” “emotional,” “gut-wrenching” and “heart rending.”

“Of course, I am hardly objective when talking about anything based on my own work… but I have to say, I thought both episodes were just great (And they are not even finished yet),” he wrote. “Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry. (I did not cry myself, but one of my friends did).”

The second season of “House of the Dragon” is currently slated to premiere in summer 2024.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

Netflix has renewed one of its most-talked-about series of the year.

Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2 is officially in the works.

The news doesn’t come as much of a surprise, given the show’s impact.

Taking one of the most popular shows and making a real-life version certainly got everyone talking, but it’s been interesting, albeit a little too fast-paced.

“There was no red light in our decision to greenlight Season 2 of Squid Game: The Challenge, the most ambitious unscripted show we’ve premiered at Netflix,” Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg said in a statement about the pickup.

Squid Game: The Challenge’s Unique Concept is Its Biggest Flaw

“We’re so excited to continue the franchise of Squid Game with our team in Korea, and producers at Studio Lambert and The Garden for this epic competition series.”

We’ve watched over the last three weeks as 456 players have competed for the grand prize.

Every player that leaves means $10,000 is added to the prize pot.

With three players remaining this season, we have plenty of questions about how the finale will pan out.

But we don’t have long to wait to find out because the season finale will stream on Netflix beginning this evening.

Meanwhile, Apple TV+ has gone public with the official trailer for Masters of the Air, and it’s as breathtaking as expected from a WWII drama from the makers of Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air.

“Ranging in location from the bucolic fields and villages of southeast England, to the harsh deprivations of a German Prisoner of War Camp, and depicting a unique and crucial time in world history, Masters of the Air is enormous in both scale and scope, and a genuine cinematic achievement,” says Apple TV+ in a press release.

Masters of the Air Sets 2024 Premiere on Apple TV+

The impressive cast is led by Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, and Ncuti Gatwa.

The latest trailer boasts big battles in the sky and delves into the lives of the men and those in their orbit as they prepare for war.

Masters of the Air makes its global debut on Friday, January 26, 2024.

Over on Prime Video, Harlem has been picked up for a third season.

The series will return with the “stylish foursome continuing to navigate life while leveling up in New York’s vibrant city of Harlem.”

“The only thing more fun than making season 2 of Harlem was getting to travel across the country and watch it with our fans!” said Oliver.

“Thanks to everyone who showed up to support and watched it at home! We’re so grateful for all the love and can’t wait to bring you an even juicier season three.”

“Harlem has continued to tell outrageously hilarious stories through the perspective of these uniquely special characters. Fans can look forward to more laughs, wit, and cultural commentary from the brilliant mind of Tracy Oliver and the amazing cast, Meagan, Grace, Jerrie, and Shoniqua,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios.

“This critically acclaimed series has been embraced by so many and it is a privilege to bring season three to our global Prime Video customers.”

“Tracy Oliver has built an alluring world full of style, humor and dazzling characters, plus exceptional performances by this talented cast,” said Erin Underhill, President, Universal Television.

“We’re delighted audiences are as enamored with Harlem as we are, and we can’t wait for them to experience this hilarious and memorable new season.”

Mike Greene, the former president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, has been sued for sexual assault by the ex-head of the Los Angeles chapter of the Academy, who says he drugged and raped her in 1994.

In the suit, filed on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Terri McIntyre accuses Greene of repeatedly harassing and assaulting her over the course of two years at the Recording Academy, which allegedly “engaged in a cover up” by hiding evidence of his history of sexual misconduct and had a “pattern and practice” of buying the silence of his other victims through the illegal use of confidentiality agreements.

In a statement, the Recording Academy said: “In light of pending litigation, the Academy declines to comment on these allegations, which occurred nearly 30 years ago. Today’s Recording Academy has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to sexual misconduct and we will remain steadfast in that commitment.”

Greene couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. He resigned from the Academy in 2002 amid scrutiny around his leadership, which included allegations of assault and harassment, as well as claims of mismanaging funds.

The suit was filed on the heels of a woman in November accusing Neil Portnow, former head of the Grammy Awards, of raping her in a New York hotel in 2018. Also named in the complaint was the Recording Academy, which allegedly neglected to conduct an investigation into the incident to protect its reputation. Portnow was among a series of powerful men in the industry accused of assault by women filing suits under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which revived the window to bring sexual misconduct claims for one year.

According to the complaint, Greene told McIntyre when she was hired in 1994 that he “expected her to perform sexual acts” in order to “remain employed and progress” at the Recording Academy.

After rebuffing his advances, McIntyre alleges Greene invited her and other employees to his hotel room following an annual meeting of trustees in Hawaii to celebrate with champagne. The suit claims she began to “feel unwell” and “lose control of her physical movements” as she noticed others leaving.

“The next thing Plaintiff recalls is waking up nude in Defendant Greene’s bed,” states the complaint, which notes that he regularly groped McIntyre.

Another assault occurred at Greene’s Malibu residence, the suit says. Under the guise of visiting a site being considered for an upcoming event, Greene allegedly tricked McIntyre into riding his car. Instead, he drove to his house, where he forced her to perform oral sex, according to the complaint. The suit states, “Plaintiff tried to get away from Defendant Greene, but Defendant Greene maintained his firm hold on Plaintiff’s head as Plaintiff gagged.”

McIntyre claims that the Recording Academy, which allegedly didn’t have a human resources department at the time, had no process for reporting misconduct. When she reached out to higher-ups in the organizations to express concerns about feeling unsafe around Greene, they allegedly reminded her of his power “in the music industry as a whole” and said he was “beyond reproach, bulletproof, and that there was nothing” they could do to help her.

According to the complaint, the Recording Academy and Greene offered severance packages and payments to multiple female employees in exchange for signing non-Disclosure or confidentiality agreements. The suit also points to settlements, including one for $650,000, to resolve complaints stemming from Greene’s sexual harassment.

McIntyre says she didn’t report the incidents to law enforcement due to threats from Greene that he would “blackball” her in the music industry, where he had a vast network of contacts as one of its most prominent figures. She resigned in 1996 after two years at the Recording Academy.

The complaint claims sexual battery, assault, and negligence, among several other claims stemming from the Recording Academy’s alleged tolerance of Greene’s history of sexual misconduct.

No one expected Paris Hilton to be a “normal” mom. Still, it’s surprising many that, for the first month of her son Phoenix’s life, she didn’t take part in that new-parent rite of passage: changing a dirty diaper.

On a recent episode of her reality show, Hilton, who just welcomed a daughter with husband Carter Reum, asked her nanny and sister, “Should I learn how to change his diaper?” It happens to be her birthday, and she told her son, per People, “I said I wouldn’t do this on my birthday, but I will for you.”

Hilton explained that she is “scared” to do it, while her sister, Nicky, was shocked. “You’ve never done it?” she asked. Under the guidance of her sister and nanny, the entrepreneur and DJ successfully changed her baby boy’s diaper.

What’s surprising isn’t so much that Paris Hilton isn’t the one taking care of every single change—she has a nanny and a husband and surely cares for her son in other ways—but that she doesn’t even know how. What if her helpers got sick and her babies needed changing? It’s one of the first skills they teach you in parenting classes because it’s so basic and helpful. (Also, I’m not a mom, but I am a former babysitter, and in my experience changing a poopy diaper can be gross, but it’s not super hard; if you can wrap a present, you can change a baby.)

However, though she might have just learned what to do when something comes out of the baby, she knows how to put something in! In a sweet TikTok video, Hilton (wearing undereye masks, natch) feeds and kisses her little one.

AWARD THIS 2023 NOMINEE! “The following actually happened. My dad asked me to tell you it didn’t.” These words open writer/director/star James Morosini’s I Love My Dad, which is based on real events set in motion by his father. It is a bit cringe, very funny, and quite heartfelt, so strap in for an emotional rollercoaster.

Franklin (Morosini) is heading home after an attempted suicide. As part of getting his life onto the right path, Franklin blocks his father, Chuck (Patton Oswalt), on all social media sites. This pleases Diane (Amy Landecker), Franklin’s mom, as she’s long felt the absentee figure has been a poor influence on her son. But, it breaks Chuck’s heart when he discovers this.

Chuck goes to a diner while processing his feelings. The waitress, Becca (Claudia Sulewski), is very understanding and pleasant to the hurt, constantly lying parent. In a fit of emotional despair, Chuck creates a new profile on Facebook posing as Becca. As Becca, he befriends Franklin, and soon enough, the two hit it off. But Franklin falls quickly for the fake persona, a wrinkle his dad didn’t foresee. When Franklin asks his dad to drive him to meet Becca, things get even more complicated. How long can Chuck keep up the catfishing facade?

I Love My Dad is practically built on cringe comedy. Every idea Chuck has is facepalm-worthy levels of utterly misguided. I suspect that no matter the good intentions and heart present, some audience members will be awfully uncomfortable for the entire 100-minute runtime. As such, they’ll probably be unable to engage with and enjoy the film.

“…Chuck creates a new profile on Facebook posing as Becca.”

And that is too bad, as the comedic drama is excellent. For starters, while Chuck’s actions are beyond the pale and often idiotic, in his own warped way, he truly loves his son. And that is super important to the film succeeding. While Franklin’s dislike of his father is understandable, the filmmaker never judges Chuck for his deeds. Morosini simply observes how the deranged actions change father and son, hopefully for the better, but maybe not.

The emotional bonding and heart of I Love My Dad is not only in the script but also given life by the cast. Rachel Dratch is quite fun as Chuck’s current significant other, while Landecker makes the most of a relatively minor role. As Becca, who is the visual manifestation of the online conversations Chuck-as-her and Franklin have, Sulewski is effortlessly charming and sweet. It is easy to figure out how and why Franklin falls so fast.

But the film belongs to Morosini and Oswalt. Morosini brings the right amount of melancholic frustration to the role. Franklin’s stunted social cues and anger at his father is never in question, as the actor imbues a tragic but sweet veneer to the young romantic coder. For his part, Oswalt taps into that dark undercurrent he showcased so well in Big Fan and Young Adult. However, instead of letting the dark overwhelm the character, the comedian plays every decision as a well-intentioned game. There’s a certain lightheartedness to his actions, no matter how appalling, and that is because Oswalt never lets viewers forget how much Chuck does actually care for Franklin, even if the ways he shows that are messed up.

With I Love My Dad, James Morosini gets to place himself in his father’s shoes and try to better understand why Chuck did these things. His efforts are not in vain, as the comedic drama is heartfelt in unexpected ways. The cast, especially Morosini himself and Oswalt, are stunning and plumb the unsavory side of the human connection to find beauty in our faults. While it is not for everyone, those who can stomach the admittedly cringey, well everything about the plot, will find much to love.

It’s a shortage with a not-so-sweet message.

A lack of sugar has impacted many bakeries across Western Canada, including in Lethbridge.

“It has been a little stressful to be a bakery at this point in time, just because it’s a product that we rely on.”

Bootsma Bakery general manager Jamie Bootsma says the company’s supplier was able to provide them with a large bag of brown sugar Wednesday morning, but it will only last about a week and used to create many of their Christmas goodies.

“We don’t have as much sugar as we’d like to have in the bakery at this time. But we just trust our supplier has our back and is able to provide for us.”

On Sept. 28, the Rogers Sugar Refinery in Vancouver had 138 workers walk off the job, striking for what they’re calling better work hours at the facility.

At present, granulated sugar is being produced by management.

“And it’s only been the availability of what we call the soft sugars, brown sugar, demerara, yellow sugar and liquid sugar,” says Martin Barnett, executive director of the Baking Association of Canada.

Barnett says almost three months in, he is hopeful to see the strike resolved soon.

“We’re encouraged that the parties are seeking mediation and hopefully in the next few weeks it’ll be resolved.”

According to recent numbers from Rogers Sugar the company generated $110.9 million in earnings in 2023, which was up 8.5 per cent from the same period in 2022.

It’s time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I’m still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it’s fun, but also difficult.

What’s more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for today’s Wordle answer, you’ll probably need some hints for this game too.

I’m a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #682 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It’s played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year.

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode – which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! – and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements – specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it’s difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle’s Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t blindly throw letters at it and expect to win – you’ll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That’s the case in Wordle too, of course, but it’s even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won’t want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe – but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you’re faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options – for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you’ll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It’s risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it’s the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure – you simply don’t have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Director Blitz Bazawule is arriving fashionably late to the fall awards race with the 2023 musical revamp of “The Color Purple,” adapted from the Alice Walker novel and the popular Broadway stage production that the film more closely resembles over Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie. With star turns from Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, and especially Danielle Brooks, what are its chances for the movie awards season amid so. many. contenders?

Now that Bazawule’s film has screened for critics, “Screen Talk” podcast hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio discuss its place in the race in the most recent episode. We also discuss the fate of Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders”; production company New Regency revealed it was shopping for a new distribution home for the motorcycle gang drama, starring Jodie Comer and Austin Butler, outside of 20th Century Studios/Disney. (Mere hours after we recorded, the movie ended up selling to Focus Features for a 2024 release.)

In this episode, we also debate the enduring appeal of the perennial holiday classic “Love, Actually,” the Richard Curtis-directed ensemble rom-com that turned 20 this season. Let’s just say one of us is more of a fan than the other.

That there are two programs premiering Thursday with nearly the same title — “Archie” on Britbox and “The Archies” on Netflix — but apparently nothing else in common, would not be enough reason for most writers to review them in the same column. But I am not most writers. (Hold your comments, please.) And as it turns out, they do have something in common, each being concerned with transforming preexisting material into something new and hopefully wonderful. The former is an occasionally great, four-part biopic of the man we called Cary Grant; the latter, a joyous Bollywoodification of beloved American comic book characters that would be on my year-end list if that weren’t already in the can.

The Archie in “Archie” is Archie Leach, who would trade that name for Cary Grant — not meaningful itself, in a time when hardly any Hollywood actors went by their given name. But the implication of the title is that we’re going to meet the person behind the persona, which on some level is the promise of every biopic.

Given that Jason Isaacs, who plays the star for the bulk of the series, is 60, just a couple of years younger than Grant was when he retired from pictures, we are largely in the twilight of his career and life. “Archie” won’t tell you much about Grant as an actor — other than suggesting that his profession was somehow the result of a traumatic childhood for which he compensated by becoming other people, the person known as “Cary Grant” among them — or even as a presence. But that’s probably for the best; whenever the series attempts to portray the glory that was Hollywood, recreate a specific production or cycle in some celebrity look-alikes, it sputters and dies.

Like any such series, “Archie” is a story based on an idea of a person, and when it succeeds it’s not so much because it’s revealed something essential about Grant, about whom volumes upon volumes have been written, as that creator Jeff Pope (“Stan & Ollie”) has written scenes with their own dramatic integrity that allow actors to do good work. Because they’re entirely theoretical, and represent no living parties, it’s Isaacs’ scenes with Peter Ellis, as the older Elias Leach, the father who abandoned him, and especially Harriet Walter as Elsie Leach, the mother his father committed to an asylum, that, ironically, ring most true. (Grant learned of this late in life, and got her out.) Isaacs is marvelous — from midlife to old age, he wears Grant’s skin lightly, the way Grant wore a bespoke suit.

“Archie” is based on Dyan Cannon’s memoir. Laura Aikman, left, plays Cannon in the series.

(Britbox)

That “Archie” is “partly” based on “Dear Cary: My Life with Cary Grant,” a 2012 memoir by the actor’s fourth wife (of five), Dyan Cannon, is clear from the amount of screen time devoted to their relationship, and though Laura Aikman is excellent as Cannon (and is an executive producer along with daughter Jennifer Grant), the on-and-off, back-and-forth, pleasure-and-mostly-pain of their life together goes on at vexing length; perhaps that’s an accurate reflection of what living with Grant felt like, but it’s a story we’ve seen many times before — husband turns moody and controlling, wife must fight for her independence — and might have been told more succinctly, even if it’s drawn from life. Still, this is where Grant becomes a father, a turning point in his life, and there is some sense in showing the bumpy road to getting there.

It may be less clear in the era of overexposure, but all stars are mysterious, being merely people; we judge them based on scraps of knowledge, remote impressions filtered through performances, and libraries of books purporting to tell us the truth about this or that person, when most of us are enigmas even to ourselves. You may not know Cary Grant any better after “Archie,” but that was never even possible.

“The Archies” has relatively little to do with the band Archie Andrews led in the comics, in cartoons and on the radio — “Sugar, Sugar” being a chart-topping hit in the U.S. and the U.K. — but it is full of singing, and also of dancing, which is something new to the canon. It’s set in the early 1960s in an idyllic Anglo-Indian community — founded by people of mixed British and Indian parentage, a distinct ethnic/cultural minority — which might help explain why the town is called Riverdale and the characters have names like Betty (Khushi Kapoor), who in this telling is named for Queen Elizabeth, and Veronica (Suhana Khan).

A group of teenagers sit on a couch with two standing behind it.

“The Archies” on Netflix is a Bollywood version of the beloved comic.

(Netflix)

Though Riverdale may have British roots, the predominant foreign influence here is American, taken from the comics, which were popular in India. The first big dance number is set to Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh‘s “Wooly Bully”; there is a song about Sinatra. And it’s all burgers and shakes at Pop’ Chock’lit Shoppe.

When Hollywood “humanizes” comic book characters, it’s usually by adding darkness or irony or sex to the mix, as in the CW’s “Archie” soap “Riverdale.” But “The Archies” humanizes them by giving them humanity. Where comic-book Reggie (Vedang Raina) is vain and sarcastic and in constant competition with Archie (Agastya Nanda), here the two are best friends, and Reggie is sensitive to things his friends are not; Jughead (Mihir Ahuja), is, like the original model, comically obsessed with food, but in some ways also the philosophical soul of the series; and Archie, who always was a dope where girls are concerned, will be forced to grow up a little by the two between whom he cannot choose. They call him “Archiekins” mockingly. Though the characters will fall in and out with one another, friendships matter more than rivalries, humility more than pride.

Though the tone is light and airy, the world candy colored and the sexual relations chaste, there are serious themes raised — the crushing of community values by the bulldozers of commerce, the importance of a free press. (One song has the refrain, “Everything is politics.”). At issue is a plan — you might guess that Veronica’s father, Hiram Lodge (Alyy Khan) has something to do with this — to build a hotel within the town’s beloved Green Park, where citizens for generations have planted a tree on their fifth birthday. The clock ticks. The endgame is pure Mickey and Judy.

And it’s briefly a Christmas show, with lights and trees and a Santa and such, if you want to schedule it as part of your dedicated holiday viewing. The year will bring you no better present.

Without warning, Disney+ removed a beloved animated Marvel Spider-Man show from its service.

Many will be quick to point to the original Animated Series as their favorite Spider-Man cartoon, but there is another that often exceeds even the classics: The Spectacular Spider-Man.

While the show was canceled prematurely after two seasons, for countless fans, it is easily one of the best depictions out there of the hero. The project only landed on Disney+ in October 2022, but it looks like its stay on the streaming service isn’t as long as audiences would like.

Spectacular Spider-Man Leaves Disney+

Marvel

Disney+ just surprised fans in the worst way possible, by taking the animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man off of the streamer in the US.

The change was reported by Disney Plus Insider, but no reason was revealed as to why the show was removed. Its removal is likely due to expiring streaming and an expiring license.

While Josh Keaton’s Spider-Man might be on a sabbatical from Disney+, there are  many other projects focused on the wallcrawler and his friends that are still available to stream:

  • Spider-Man (2002)
  • Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Missing Josh Keaton’s Spectacular Spider-Man

Most fans would do almost anything to get more of Spectacular Spider-Man. If the show had been allowed to continue, audiences would’ve seen villains like Carnage, Hobgoblin, Hydro-Man, and more.

Technically speaking, fans can still see Josh Keaton’s Spectacular Spider-Man on at least one streaming service. The character pops up briefly in Across the Spider-Verse, which is now streaming on Netflix.

Sadly, outside of buying the episodes themselves, that’s the only way to see Keaton’s webhead for now. Hopefully, the show will become easily accessible again in the near future.

As for Peter Parker’s future in animation, his character could easily appear in What If…? season 2 when it premieres on December 22. Then the animated show Spider-Man: Freshman Year will debut at some point in the future—though it’s unclear if it’s destined for a 2024 or 2025 release.

Aquaman may not have the Rogues Gallery of some of his Justice League teammates like Batman, Superman, or the Flash. His baddies aren’t even on the level of Green Lantern’s or Wonder Woman’s, if we’re being honest. But that’s not to say they are all bargain basement baddies. The King of Atlantis has a few truly lethal and memorable villains who have plagued him over the decades, and these are the best of the best. Or should we say the worst of the worst?

DC Comics

7. The Scavenger (Peter Mortimer)

The often forgotten Aquaman villain, the Scavenger.
DC Comics

The villain known as the Scavenger was just as his name suggests—an underwater scavenger. First appearing in 1968’s Aquaman #37, Peter Mortimer wore a high-tech underwater diving suit, which he used to rummage through the ocean floor for lost treasure and powerful weapons. All of this, of course, brought him into conflict with Aquaman. Scavenger made a handful of appearances in the Silver and Bronze Age of comics. Eventually, he gained mystical powers, which made him a bigger threat. The New 52 reboot of the DC Universe brought him back to basics. Once again, he was a scavenger looting the ocean for ancient Atlantean artifacts. Only this time, he had a much cooler suit.

That much cooler suit helps him land a spot as one of Aquaman’s best baddies.

6. The Shark (Karshan)

The Shark, one of Green Lantern and Aquaman's villains in DC Comics.
DC Comics

The Shark is not to be confused with the Suicide Squad’s King Shark; that’s a totally different guy. No, the villain called the Shark actually originated as an antagonist for Green Lantern Hal Jordan, way back in Green Lantern #24 in 1963. His backstory was your basic Silver Age origin for a villain. A radioactive explosion went off in the ocean, transforming a basic tiger shark into a humanoid hybrid—one who only wanted to seek out prey and devour them. While he was mostly a Green Lantern adversary at first, as a water-based creature, it was inevitable he would wind up as an Aquaman villain. When he fought Arthur, he took on the Atlantean identity of Karshan. He wasn’t as menacing looking as later, similar villains like King Shark. At least not at first. But for some time there, he was a big thorn in Aquaman’s side.

5. The Fisherman

The DC Comics aquatic villain the Fisherman.
DC Comics

The Fisherman is one of those Silver Age Aquaman villains that just had that extra something creators and fans liked, so he kept coming back. His real name has never been revealed. He’s one of DC’s many pirates who use oceanic motifs as part of his schtick. Still, his look is slightly more memorable than the others. This is mainly because he literally used a giant titanium steel fishing rod as his main weapon. All while wearing a yellow fisherman’s cowl too. Oh, and with thigh-high boots. Because why not? He’s one of the few comic villains who made it into the ’60s Aquaman cartoon, which probably helped him, recognition-wise. DC eventually revealed his goofy fisherman’s hat was actually a parasitic entity that controlled his victims! That fact alone is so bizarre and off-the-wall, that it earns The Fisherman a place on this list.

4. Kordax

The Atlantean villain Kordax, anscestor of Aquaman.
DC Comics

When writer Peter David created a whole history and lore for ancient Atlantis in his 1990 series The Atlantis Chronicles, one of the best additions was the villainous Kordax. He was born to an ancient Atlantean queen, but then abandoned after his birth because of his green-scaled body and (unusual for Atlanteans) blonde hair. But Kordax didn’t die when abandoned on the reef, because he had the power to telepathically communicate with sea life. And he learned to control them, and later, use them to do his bidding.

Kordax returned as an adult and tried to claim the Atlantean throne, but failed in his coup. Because of his unique hair color, blonde hair became a sign of evil to Atlanteans. And this was also why the Atlantean people abandoned his descendant Orin to die. Centuries later, he returned, and became a lethal enemy for his descendant Orin, now Aquaman, in the Sea King’s ’90s solo series written by his creator, Peter David. Aquaman ultimately killed him, but he made his mark in his short time as an Aquaman adversary. He will at least be referenced in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

3. Charybdis

Charybdis, one of Aquaman's most lethan 90s enemies.
DC Comics

Charybdis didn’t make a ton of appearances in many Aquaman comics. However, he inflicted the most pain on Arthur Curry than anyone other than Black Manta. Created by Peter David and Martin Egeland and first appearing in 1994’s Aquaman #1, Charybdis and his wife, Scylla were named for ancient monsters from Greek mythology. Both were high-profile terrorists who attempted to kill Aquaman for fame and money. But when Scylla was herself instead killed, Charybdis lost his mind with grief.

Similar to Marvel’s Rogue, Charybdis could absorb powers from others. He attempted to absorb Aquaman’s power, and then controlled a school of piranha to eat Aquaman’s hand, leaving nothing but bones. (He’d later replace that lost hand with a giant hook, which was pretty badass, we can’t lie). Charybdis couldn’t control Aquaman’s power, and he himself fell into a pool of piranha. But since this is comics, he didn’t really die. Instead, he melded with the creatures and absorbed their traits, and became Piranha Man. The name Piranha Man might sell more action figures, but we still like the name Charybdis better.

2. Ocean Master (Orm Marius)

Ocean Master, Aquaman's half brother and lifelong foe.
DC Comics

Aquaman’s second most important villain is his own half-brother Orm, also known as Ocean Master. Orm has had several backstories over the years, but he’s always been Arthur Curry’s bitter sibling. First appearing in 1966’s Aquaman #29, he was originally a high-tech pirate. In the post-Crisis era, DC reinvented him as a sorcerer who wielded Atlantean magic, and the half-brother of Aquaman via his human father, Tom Curry. Peter David’s version was Aquaman’s half-brother via sharing the same father, this time the ancient Atlantean sorcerer Atlan.

In Geoff Johns’ New 52 era take on the character in 2011, he was an Atlantean royal, the other son of Queen Atlanna, who had a vendetta against the surface world for their pollution of the oceans, and who sought to destroy them. This was the version Patrick Wilson played that made it to live-action in the Aquaman film. Regardless of how he was related to Aquaman and by which parent, his role as the wildly jealous half-sibling was always constant. It always made the stakes between himself and his arch-enemy truly personal. Add to that a memorable design (that helmet is both goofy and cool), and he’ll always be one of Aquaman’s most famous bad guys.

1. Black Manta (David Hyde)

Black Manta, Aquaman's most famous adversary.
DC Comics

Over the decades, Aquaman faced off against many air-breathing undersea criminal types in diving suits. Many of which remain forgotten today. So why did Black Manta, who debuted in Aquaman #35 in 1967, rise to the top? And why is David Hyde the greatest of all Aquaman villains, even over his jealous half-brother Orm? Three reasons: His costume design is cool as hell. Never underestimate the power of a killer look in superhero comics. Second, he appeared in the Aquaman animated series, and later, on the Challenge of the Super-Friends. And finally, he committed the worst act ever done by a supervillain to their arch-enemy—he murdered Aquaman’s young son.

Ever since that seminal story back in the ‘70s, Black Manta became Arthur Curry’s most famous foe. The Joker to his Batman. Modern comics have given Black Manta more layers and backstory, including revealing his motivations against the King of Atlantis. One of those reasons is that he blamed Aquaman for the death of his father. Because of all of these things, Black Manta was not only a villain in the first Aquaman film, played by Yayah Abdul-Mateen II, but also in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as well. For all of these reasons, we highly doubt anyone will ever replace Black Manta as Aquaman’s most notorious enemy.

Aquaman may not have the Rogues Gallery

Rockstar Games has released more details on GTA 6, following the early publication of the game’s reveal trailer on Monday.

According to a press release published by parent company Take-Two, GTA 6 will initially release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, but there is no mention of PC.

Both Grand Theft Auto V and IV released on consoles first, followed by a PC port later.

GTA 4 was released on PC 6 months after consoles. GTA 5 took a while longer, releasing on PC 18 months after consoles.

“Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

According to the PR, Grand Theft Auto VI will take place in the state of Leonida, “home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond” in what Take-Two is calling “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet”.

Rockstar was due to premiere its GTA 6 trailer on Tuesday. However, on Monday an anonymous X (formerly Twitter) account forced its hand by uploading a low res and heavily watermarked version of the reveal video early.

Shortly after the leak, Rockstar published an official version of the trailer, writing: “Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube.”

One GTA 6 developer expressed their disappointment on social media, following the trailer’s leaking and early publication.

Senior gameplay animator Javier Altman wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the early publication of the much-anticipated reveal video had robbed them of plans to watch the live reaction with the rest of the development team.

“This fucking sucks,” they wrote. “I was hoping to watch this for the first time tomorrow along with my fellow teammates and coworkers. I feel we deserved that moment.”

Altman added: “I’m so proud of what we are making. Enjoy the trailer, everyone.”
