Rumors about the DC Universe continue to float around, as James Gunn tackles another report.
A user recently asked Gunn on Threads about an online rumor that the Teen Titans film adaptation could be getting closer to having a director. After a social media post gained traction about Euphoria’s Sam Levinson being eyed to helm it, the DC Studios co-CEO stated, “No, it’s not true. Not talking to any directors quite yet. This “insider” isn’t inside much.”
While Gunn has debunked that Levinson isn’t involved whatsoever, the Superman director’s “quite yet” part means that the team-up film is definitely not dead. It could potentially mean that they might be looking into starting the search for a filmmaker in the near or distant future.
The live-action Teen Titans movie from DC Studios was first revealed to be in the works back in March 2024, when it was reported that Ana Nogueira had been hired to write the script. The screenwriter is no stranger to the DCU, as she wrote the upcoming Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock.
Nogueira has also been tasked with writing the DCU’s Wonder Woman reboot, as Diana Prince will also be getting her own film in Gunn’s franchise. However, with the Amazon hero being a bigger priority for DC Studios, the Teen Titans project has taken a backseat but hasn’t been canceled.
The Teen Titans IP has always been one of the most well-known DC properties for Warner Bros., from the many successful animated TV shows based on the team, to the group’s larger role in the comic book world. HBO Max also had the live-action Titans series, which saw a grittier take on the superhero team.
The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate has so far established that this continuity already has a lot of the famous heroes and villains established in Gunn’s reboot. That is why something like Teen Titans would make sense to incorporate into DC Studios’ ongoing franchise.
With Gunn’s latest update on the big screen adaptation for the legendary superhero league, time will tell if things are coming together behind the scenes with the script. As DC Studios has made it clear before, no project will move forward until a screenplay’s creative vision has been fully finalized.
The Teen Titans movie lineup has many characters that the DCU could rely on, as the roster has evolved throughout the decades. If Wonder Woman goes forward sooner rather than later, it will ideally allow Nogueira to resume work on her take on the team in Gunn’s superhero universe.
