‘The Batman Part II’ Confirms Return of Andy Serkis as Alfred

Matt Reeves’ next trip to Gotham has picked up another meaningful casting update. As The Batman – Part II edges closer to production, one of the sequel’s most important supporting players is now officially back in the picture.

The film is still keeping most of its plot details under wraps, but updates like this are starting to feel more significant as the project moves forward. Principal photography is expected to begin in June 2026 in London, which means returning cast confirmations now say more about where the sequel is heading than they did a few months ago.

That returning character is Alfred Pennyworth, with Andy Serkis officially confirmed to reprise the role in The Batman sequel. After promising talk from Serkis to Collider, it has been confirmed by Deadline that he will once again play Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler and closest confidant, bringing back one of the first film’s most important emotional anchors as the franchise moves into its next chapter.

“I’m pretty certain it’s all going to work out. Yeah, we’re working on it, but I think it’s all looking good.”

The confirmation also answers a practical question that had started to follow the production. Early April 2026 reports suggested Serkis’ involvement could be complicated by his work directing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, but the two projects have reportedly aligned their schedules to make his return possible.

For a sequel that has revealed very little about its story, Alfred’s reappearance still says quite a lot. Reeves’ take on Gotham was never only about scale or spectacle. The first movie was just as interested in Bruce Wayne’s damage, isolation, and unfinished evolution, and Alfred remains one of the few characters who can reach that part of him directly.

That makes Serkis’ return more than routine franchise business. If The Batman – Part II builds on the emotional groundwork of the first film, Alfred is central to it. He gives Bruce someone to trust, someone to fail, and someone who understands the cost of what he is becoming. That relationship is one of the things that gave Reeves’ first film its weight, and it makes sense that the sequel would want to keep it intact.

Robert Pattinson is already confirmed to return as Bruce Wayne, and the actor has recently spoken enthusiastically about Reeves’ script. Pattinson described the screenplay as “so good” and suggested the sequel is a “really different type” of Batman movie, while Reeves has also indicated that the follow-up will put more focus on Bruce Wayne after the first movie leaned so heavily into Batman himself.

Serkis is not the only returning face attached to the sequel. Colin Farrell is expected to return as Oz Cobb following the events of The Penguin, Jeffrey Wright is set to return as Commissioner James Gordon, and Barry Keoghan has been reported to be part of the film’s growing ensemble. Even so, Alfred’s return stands out because it speaks less to the sequel’s expanding world than to its emotional core. Sebastian Stan is set to debut as Harvey Dent, while Scarlett Johansson has booked an undisclosed lead female role in the film.

The Batman – Part II is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2027, and with filming expected to start this summer, the sequel is finally beginning to feel more real.
