Spoilers ahead for Street Fighter (2026)
Street Fighter has a bevy of recognizable and beloved characters, but none are more synonymous with the franchise than Ryu. That extends to the new Street Fighter live-action adaptation too, as Ryu’s conflicts with Ken, Akuma, and M. Bison are just as important as the darkness he battles within himself. Now we know that could just be the beginning of Ryu’s journey, as one star has confirmed Ryu’s darkest story lies ahead in a potential sequel.
In Street Fighter, Ryu gives in to the dark Hado energy during his battle against Akuma. That energy transforms him into Evil Ryu, and he would still be stuck in that state if it weren’t for Ken. MovieWeb asked Andrew Koji whether Ryu had actually gained control of that darkness by the end of the film or if he had just learned how dangerous it really is.
“Good question. And I remember you from the Warrior days. I like the second one. I think the idea that, you know, I don’t think he’s contained it. I think obviously there’s the Mu no Ken, which is the power of nothingness, which is the opposite of Satsui no Hado. I think he’s probably through Ken. Don’t want to give too much away, but I think he’s learned how dangerous it can be. He knows how dangerous it is, but I think, at least hopefully by the end of the film, he’s one step closer to the path of Mu no Ken.”
If a Street Fighter sequel happens, Koji’s tease is very much the next chapter of Ryu’s story. Mu no Ken refers to the Power of Nothingness, which represents light energy and spiritual reflection. That’s the antithesis of the Satsui no Hado, which represents dark energy and intent to kill.
Ryu has had a constant struggle with keeping the dark energy at bay, and the story makes a key point about Ken being the only one who can pull Ryu out of the darkness when it overcomes him. With how the film ends, it makes sense that Ryu’s next logical step would be to find a different power source, and since his former mentor Gouken utilized the Mu no Ken, that’s a perfect place to start.
The Mu no Ken is typically awakened by some major moment in battle, but even after it awakens, it still has to be harnessed through training. That’s a whole journey in itself, including when the power of the Mu no Ken first awakened in Ryu during his battle against Seth. Over the course of Street Fighter IV, Ryu trains and learns how to wield that power, leading to a major fight against M. Bison that shows just how powerful the Mu no Ken can be, even against Psycho Power.
For the Street Fighter movie sequel, adding Mu no Ken to Ryu’s arsenal not only allows him to explore the differences between his two chosen fighting styles, but it also gives Ryu more ways to impact a scene. In the games, he’s utilized it in both offensive and defensive ways. Sometimes he’s created a devastating projectile, but he can also create a shield from it to protect his allies.
The ending of Street Fighter also teases some possible changes to Akuma, which sets up a potential rematch in the sequel. If that happens, that battle could be the place where Ryu taps into the Mu no Ken, moving Ryu one major step closer to putting his dark side to rest for good.
