Super Mario Bros. Movie Stars Reveal Their Wario & Waluigi Fancasts (& They’re Brilliant)

The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Chris Pratt and Charlie Day choose the perfect actors to play Wario and Waluigi. This year’s highly-anticipated animated movie based on the video game Super Mario Bros. is already stuffed with great Mushroom Kingdom characters, including Pratt’s Mario and Day’s Luigi. But even with so many classic characters set to appear, the film is still missing a lot of fan favorites, including Mario and Luigi’s mirror-image nemeses Wario and Waluigi.

The evil versions of Mario and Luigi could of course still turn up in a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and if that ever happens, Pratt and Day have perfect suggestions for who should voice the characters. Speaking recently to Digital Spy, the Mario and Luigi stars were asked which of their famous sitcom co-stars should appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, and both had no problem coming up with great ideas (around 1:10 of the above video). It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Day was first up, followed by former Parks and Rec star Pratt:

DAY: You put anyone from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia into the Mushroom Kingdom, they’re going to be great. Maybe [Danny] DeVito would be a great Wario.

PRATT: And I wonder who’d be a good Waluigi. Maybe Nick Offerman.

Danny DeVito And Nick Offerman Would Be Great As Wario and Waluigi, For Different Reasons

With his aggressive style of reading comedic lines, DeVito would be the perfect person to voice the character of Wario, the treasure-hungry antagonist featured in video game titles like Mario & Wario, Wario Blast and Wario Land. Pratt’s suggestion of Offerman is a little more off-the-wall however, as the Parks and Rec and Last of Us actor is known for having a blasé comedic persona that doesn’t naturally lend itself to doing cartoonish and expressive line readings.

Offerman’s lack of a DeVito-like manic energy might make him the perfect person to voice Waluigi however, offering up a contrast to what DeVito would deliver as Wario. Offerman also has a gruff and ill-tempered side to his persona, which came across most vividly as the character of Ron Swanson in Parks and Rec, that with a little dialing-in could make sense for the rude and boastful Waluigi.

It remains to be seen whether Wario and Waluigi will be in the plans for any future The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, but both are characters with big followings, and Waluigi in particular would be fun to explore given how mysterious he remains even after multiple appearances in Mario video games.
