“The Fall Guy”: A Love Letter to Cinema & Stunts

“The Fall Guy” is soon to be one of your new favorite films.

The action, comedy directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce is loosely based on the 1980s TV series about stunt performers. “The Fall Guy” is a cinematic delight that stands out as one of the most entertaining films of the year so far. With a thoroughly captivating storyline that never had a dull moment. Full of clever humor, lovable characters, excellent stunts, action and fight sequences. The way the film seamlessly blends action, comedy, romance and a touch of mystery whist also leaving enough room for each aspect of the film created an exhilarating experience for viewers. What truly sets it apart is its sincere homage to cinema itself. While poking fun at certain filmmaking tropes, it avoids falling into clichés, making it a refreshing and enjoyable watch.

The film follows stuntman Colt Seavars. More than a year after being severely injured after a stunt gone wrong, Colt must get back into action when he is asked to return back to the set of his ex girlfriend’s new movie. Colt soon finds himself in the middle of a sinister plot that pushes him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt. This working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?

The film stars Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers, Emily Blunt as Jody Moreno, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Tom Ryder, Hannah Waddingham as Gail Meyer, Winston Duke as Dan Tucker, Teresa Palmer and Stephanie Hsu. We see some incredible performances from  Waddingham and Duke in their supporting roles. We are also treated to some badass fight sequences from Duke. Who it looks like still has some of that Wakanda training.

Gosling and Blunt, the driving forces behind this film, completely disappear into their roles, delivering powerhouse performances that shine both comedically and emotionally. Not only do they excel in their acting, but they also kick serious butt with their action sequences. Gosling, along with his talented stunt doubles, showcases an impressive display of action and many impressive stunts that deserves recognition, perhaps even an Oscar for Best Stunts. Which is another thing the film cleverly pokes fun at. The lack of a Best Stunts category at the Oscars, highlighting yet another layer of its witty commentary on the filmmaking industry.

The movie’s kicking soundtrack, similar to its cast is full of recognizable names such as Taylor Swift, AC/DC and Christina Aguilera, full of songs that completly elevate each scene. We are even treated to an emotional Jody (Emily Blunt) singing her heart out to “Take a Look at Me Now” (Against All Odds) originally performed by Phil Collins.

The plot twists in “The Fall Guy” truly keep viewers on the edge of their seats, defying expectations at every turn. The meticulous execution of the storyline showcases exceptional writing, from the way a fire is extinguished to the intensity of a car crash. “The Fall Guy” excels in capturing the essence of storytelling through its attention to even the smallest details. Not to mention, the inclusion of an adorable four-legged companion adds an extra layer of charm to the film.

The Fall Guy” serves as a poignant reminder of the immense effort and dedication behind the scenes of the films we love. It sheds light on the often-overlooked contributions of stunt performers, whose daring feats can elevate a scene to new heights. By showcasing the challenging work of these professionals, hopefully this film will bring a newfound appreciation for the craft and skill required to bring cinematic visions to life.

In essence, “The Fall Guy” is a true love letter to the magic of the movies, but most importantly a love letter to the unsung heroes of film and Hollywood, the stuntman and women. This film deserves one hell of a thumbs up.
