Quinta Brunson Advocates For Teachers In SNL Monologue

A very excited Quinta Brunson from Abbot Elementary took the Saturday Night Live stage on April 1st 2023 for her first time hosting and she delivered a monologue that was both funny and one that everyone needed to hear.

Quinta used her monologue to advocate for teachers.

She had been wanting to be on SNL ever since she was younger. “I wanted to be on SNL back in the day but the audition process seemed long,” she said. “So instead, I just created my own TV show, made sure it became really popular, won a bunch of Emmys and then got asked to host, so much easier, so much easier.”

At one point Quinta even threw some shade at FRIENDS. “It’s a network sitcom like, say, Friends,” she said about Abbott Elementary. “Except, instead of being about a group of friends, it’s about a group of teachers. Instead of New York, it’s in Philadelphia and instead of not having Black people, it does.”

Her show Abbott Elementary is about a group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life. Though these incredible public servants may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children. The reason this project is so special to her is because her mother was a teacher.

The hightlight of Quinta’s monologue was when she spoke about teachers, Quinta goes on to mention what an amazing teacher her mother was and how proud she was of her, but as she goes on to say “I also know first hand teachers get taken for granted.” In an educational and eye opening comparison Quinta goes on to tell people how much teachers were taken for granted especially during the pandemic by using her dishwasher as an example. Saying, without thinking much about it she would simply use it all the time, but then when she moved into a new apartment with her husband that did not have a dishwasher, she wanted to leave immediately. She finally goes on to say “Me not having a dishwasher is how parents feel when they don’t have teachers, during the pandemic.”

Towards the end of her monologue Quinta pleaded with the audience to “Please, remember how important teachers are, acknowledge the work they do everyday and for the love of God pay them the money they deserve.” Something very important to keep in mind, and something that needs to change all over the world.

Considering nothing would happen in the world of entertainment if a teacher hadn’t been there to teach A B C’s or how to write, I’d say we owe them a lot.
