Jagathy Sreekumar is one of Malayalam cinema’s most iconic comedy and character actors. He was born on January 5, 1951, in Jagathy, near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. His father, the late N K Achary, was a renowned drama teacher and writer, and this artistic environment sparked Jagathy’s interest in acting at an early age. He began performing in stage plays while still at school. The name ‘Jagathy’ itself comes from his hometown.

While working as a medical representative, he attempted to enter the film industry, and the 1975 film Chattambikalyaani proved to be a major turning point in his life. Widely hailed as the ‘King of Comedy’ in Malayalam cinema, Jagathy was equally compelling in emotional and negative roles.

Jagathy Sreekumar had the rare ability to elevate a scene through mere facial expressions, often without uttering a single word. His impeccable comic timing and expressive body language remain unmatched. Films such as Kilukkam, Yodha, Meesa Madhavan, and Nandanam stand as lasting proof of his extraordinary talent.

The character ‘Nesamani’, famously played by Vadivelu in the Tamil film Friends and still viral today, was originally portrayed by Jagathy Sreekumar. He was the first actor to bring that character to life. Owing to his packed schedule in Malayalam cinema, he appeared only sparingly in other languages, though he did feature in the Tamil film Aadum Koothu, directed by TV Chandran.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Jagathy Sreekumar has acted in over 1,500 films. He holds a Guinness World Record for appearing in the highest number of films in a single year and for acting in more than a thousand films overall. At the peak of his career, it was almost unthinkable to find a Malayalam film without his presence.

However, on March 10, 2012, a tragic accident sent shockwaves through the Malayalam film industry. In the early hours of that morning, the car in which Jagathy was travelling crashed into a road barrier near Thenjipalam, close to Malappuram. He sustained severe injuries to his head, chest, arms, and legs and was left fighting for his life. After nearly a year of intensive hospital treatment, he recovered and returned home.

The accident, however, drastically affected his speech and mobility. The artist who brought laughter to five generations lost his ability to speak and has since been confined to a wheelchair. Following the incident, Jagathy Sreekumar took a prolonged break from public life, though he has gradually begun attending events once again.

After a decade-long absence, he returned to the screen, reprising his role as Vikram in the fifth instalment of the CBI series. Reports also suggest that he is set to appear as Professor Ambili in a zombie film titled Vala. Despite his physical limitations, Jagathy Sreekumar continues to respond to the unwavering love of his fans with gentle smiles and expressive gestures.
