After winning raves at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, including a richly deserved Best Actress win for Renate Reinsve, the hotshot indie distributor NEON picked up The Worst Person In The World and started prepping its US release strategy. The Delta variant, and then the Omicron variant, took the wind out of this arthouse movie’s box office sails — it grossed just over $3MM domestically during its time in theaters — but NEON managed to pick up two Oscar nominations for this film (Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature). They weren’t able to secure a Best Actress nom for Reinsve, though (too busy pushing K-Stew for Spencer?), which is a shame because her performance here does CIRCLES around the clownshow pantomime that was Jessica Chastain’s Oscar-winning work as Tammy Faye Bakker. If you find yourself drawn to movies like Before Sunrise or Amelie, do yourself a favor and rent this wonderful, hilarious, and heartbreaking movie about an intelligent yet aimless millennial (Reinsve) making her way in the world today.
