Anya Chalotra has reportedly been cast in James Gunn’s Creature Commandos series, based on the DC comic of the same name about a superhero team which follows versions of characters from classic horror movies. Take this with a grain of salt, though, because neither Chalotra or DC Studios has officially confirmed the possible casting. The news comes from Toonado and X (formerly Twitter) user “best of anya chlotra,” who say that Chalotra’s official CV on Spotlight confirms her role in the series. You can check out the aforementioned posts for yourself below.
The above sources say that Chalotra has been cast as Circe, a character whose very important in Wonder Woman lore. And yes, it’s that Circe. The one that imprisoned Odysseus during Homer’s The Odyssey and turned several crewmen into pigs. Chalotra’s casting as that character would certainly make some sense, since her breakout role was as Yennefer of Vengerberg in Netflix’s The Witcher, a sorceress who is capable of very powerful magic.
Creature Commandos Stars Viola Davis, David Harbour, Frank Grillo & Maria Bakalova
In the comics, Circe is one of three characters who can lay claim to being Wonder Woman/Diana Prince’s archenemy. The other two are Ares and Cheetah. Ares, the Greek God of War, appeared as the main villain in Wonder Woman (2017). The actor playing him is technically a SPOILER, albeit one most audience members saw coming. There have been many different incarnations of Cheetah over the years, with varying names, appearances, powers, and personalities. An adaptation of the Barbara Minerva version was played by Kristen Wiig in Wonder Woman 1984.
Were there to be a third Wonder Woman movie (with or without Gal Gadot), to some it might seem likely that Circe would be the natural main choice for villain. Comic book franchises often go from one archenemy to the next, while a rebooted Wonder Woman outing would be looking for a villain that audiences haven’t seen on the big screen before. But that’s getting ahead of ourselves.
If the reports are true and Chalotra is playing Circe in Creature Commandos, then she’ll be joining a pretty talented cast. The series is set to star Viola Davis, David Harbour, Frank Grillo, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoë Chao, Alan Tudyk, Sean Gunn, and Steve Agee, with the voice actors also confirmed to be playing the same DC characters when they appear in live action.
