The BET Awards took place on Sunday, June 26 in Los Angeles, and stars like Lizzo, Janelle Monáe, and host Taraji P. Henson brought all-out glamour to the red carpet.
Winners included Megan Thee Stallion—who missed the red carpet after performing at Glastonbury the day prior—Kendrick Lamar, Zendaya, and Will Smith, who took home the best actor award for his performance in King Richard.
The show took place two days following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending abortion as a constitutionally protected right in the United States. Henson, Monáe, and Jazmine Sullivan were among the stars with some strong words of condemnation: “It’s about damn time we talk about the fact that guns have more rights than a woman,” said Henson referencing Lizzo’s hit song. She also thanked the singer and Live Nation for their $1 million pledge to abortion funds. “It’s a sad day in America,” Henson concluded.
But, despite everything, the show must go on. See all the red-carpet looks from the show below.
