Superman returns in the first footage from director James Gunn’s upcoming DCU sequel, Man of Tomorrow. And he’s got a new suit. David Corenswet is back as the iconic superhero, and with filming on the follow-up now underway in Atlanta, the Man of Steel is wasting no time in saving the day.
The behind-the-scenes footage finds Corenswet’s Superman seemingly holding the massive weight of something above his head, a staple of the super-strong character, with the clip (via @Tristen_Smith12) also confirming that he will get a new costume for his 2027 comeback.
Now due to fly into theaters on July 9, 2027, Man of Tomorrow comes surprisingly quickly following last year’s Superman. Well-received but debatably disappointing at the box office, the movie reintroduced the comic book icon following the divisive DCEU. Former MCU filmmaker Jame Gunn is now in control of the rebranded DCU, with Superman throwing audiences into a world packed with superheroes and a Man of Steel three years into his tenure.
The sequel, Man of Tomorrow, will bring back David Corenswet alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with the two characters acting as co-protagonists and teaming up to do battle with the villainous Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger, who will finally make his big screen debut.
Alongside the footage above, several new images (via @EverythingDCU_) from filming have also emerged, offering our first look at Superman’s new suit. Looking similar to what he sported in the first outing, there are some notable differences. The shade of blue appears to be much darker, harking back to Henry Cavill’s suit in the DCEU. The logo adorning his chest is also much larger than before, with the divisive collar looking smaller and the suit overall looking a lot more form-fitting. In essence, it seems that the new suit will tackle several criticisms leveled at Superman’s first DCU appearance. Thankfully, in this writer’s opinion, anyway, the bright red trunks remain intact.
Featuring an ever-growing supporting cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart / Green Lantern, alongside co-leads David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult (who gets a new suit of his own), Man of Tomorrow promises to be a superhero blockbuster of epic proportions.
Man of Tomorrow is just one installment in what James Gunn has now dubbed the “Superman Saga.” First up is this month’s Supergirl, which finds House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock picking up where she left off at the end of Superman and reuniting with Krypto for an intergalactic adventure. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl is the second big screen outing in the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and is due to land in theaters on June 26, 2026.
