Superman: Man Of Tomorrow Gets Early Rave Review From WBD CEO

The CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery just revealed what he really thinks of the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

After Superman was released in theaters, Warner Bros. officially moved forward on a sequel and announced a 2027 release date, with filming underway this spring. Corenswet and Brosnahan are returning as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively, as are Nicholas Hoult (as Lex Luthor) and Skyler Gisondo (as Jimmy Olsen).

During WBD’s most recent earnings call, David Zaslav said (via TheWrap) that he saw some photos from Man of Tomorrow “that looked amazing… It looks fantastic. We’re super excited about it.” It was James Gunn’s birthday on Wednesday, August 5, and the filmmaker was on set working 16 to 18 hours, according to the CEO.

Zaslav also hyped up Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, James Watkins’ Clayface and the HBO series Lanterns, adding that the upcoming DC lineup “feels very good, and we have a robust pipeline, and [DC Studios CEOs] Peter [Safran] and James are hard at work.”

“On the DC side, James is focused on Man of Tomorrow. I saw some pictures yesterday that looked amazing. Actually, yesterday was James’ birthday, and he’s out working. He’s working 16, 18 hours a day. It looks fantastic. We’re super excited about it. Matt Reeves, I spoke to over the weekend, and he’s working very hard on Batman.

“We have Clayface coming up soon, which looks terrific. We got Lanterns launching in the next few weeks on HBO, which Casey [Bloys] and Sarah [Aubrey] are super excited about. So DC feels very good, and we have a robust pipeline, and Peter and James are hard at work.”

Man of Tomorrow is the sequel to Gunn’s 2025 film Superman, which is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a critic score of 83% and a Verified Hot audience score of 90%. At the box office, the superhero movie, the first entry in Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, grossed $618.7 million and earned several Saturn Award nominations, including Best Film Direction, Best Actor (David Corenswet), and Best Actress (Rachel Brosnahan).

After Lex Luthor served as the main villain in 2025’s Superman, following in his footsteps as Man of Tomorrow‘s villain will be Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.

Other cast members include Milly Alcock (reprising Kara Zor-El), Isabela Merced, Aaron Pierre, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, María Gabriela de Faría, Frank Grillo, Skyler Gisondo, Wendell Pierce, Mikaela Hoover, Sara Sampaio, Adria Arjona, Matthew Lillard and Sinqua Walls.

Xolo Maridueña is also back as Blue Beetle after playing the character in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe.

Gunn’s first Superman film saw the titular superhero, with Krypto by his side, face off against the iconic DC villain Lex Luthor, who ends up getting arrested in the end. The movie concludes with Kara showing up to get her dog, with the two then starring together in Supergirl, which was released in theaters just over a month ago.

Unfortunately, it grossed $125.9 million and earned very mixed reviews from critics, who gave Supergirl a Rotten Tomatoes score of 52%; audiences were more receptive with a 73% score.

Despite that setback, Kara will appear in the Superman sequel alongside her famous cousin, and as Zaslav mentioned on the earnings call, Warner Bros. is still moving full steam ahead with its slate of feature-length DC films, including Clayface, which is up next on October 23, 2026. That will be followed by Man of Tomorrow in July 2027 and The Batman: Part II in February 2028.

Man of Tomorrow will be released in theaters on Friday, July 9, 2027.
