Sundance Drama ‘Mutt’ Takes Nuanced Approach To Telling Trans Story – Deadline

The Deadline Studio at Sundance Film Festival runs January 20-23 at Hotel Park City, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup sit down with Deadline’s festival team to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Park City.

MUTT

Section: U.S. Dramatic Competition

Director: Vuk Lungulov-Klotz

Logline: Over the course of a single hectic day in New York City, three people from Feña’s past are thrust back into his life. Having lost touch since transitioning from female to male, he navigates the new dynamics of old relationships while tackling the day-to-day challenges of living life in between.

Panelists: Vuk Lungulov-Klotz (director, producer, writer), Lío Mehiel (actor, “Feña”), Cole Doman (actor, “John”), MiMi Ryder (actor, “Zoe”)

First Screening: January 23, 2:55 p.m MST, Eccles Theatre, Park City

Key Quote: “It is definitely reflective of my own experience, but I was able to take it a little bit away from my life. I’m trans and I wrote this movie about six years ago. I tried to place all my fears in this film and through that process found a lot of love and empathy and trying to see myself reflected in the people that were most afraid about me being trans — like my family, like my fear of not finding love, my younger siblings, just society at large. And I realized that there was a lot of support and love around me. This movie is a lot about empathy.” — Vuk Lungulov-Klotz

“When I first read this script, I was so taken by how nuanced and complex Vuk… in the way that he was able to capture the trans experience, sort of just centering on the human aspects of our day-to-day lives that are not related to our gender, that are not motivated by our gender. That was a really big draw for me.” — Lío Mehiel
