Shawn Levy Set to Direct New Netflix Movie ‘Somewhere Out There’

Richard is a writer/journalist from Oregon (by way of California) with a love of Marvel, Star Wars, DC, and all kinds of entertainment. He joined MovieWeb in January 2026 as a Movie & TV Writer/Editor. Director Shawn Levy is in the midst of an exciting run in cinema, getting ready to deliver Star Wars’s 13th big-screen movie in 2027, Star Wars: Starfighter. Having already hit big on projects like the Night at the Museum trilogy and the MCU’s Deadpool and Wolverine (the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever), Levy will bring a new kind of story to the Star Wars universe, which includes Ryan Gosling, Flynn Grey, and a supporting cast full of A-list talent (Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Matt Smith). While this success in theaters is a massive accomplishment in and of itself, Levy is also one of the biggest names in the streaming world as well.

Working closely with Netflix, Levy worked as an executive producer and director on Stranger Things, which became one of the streamer’s most successful original series ever. He also moved to the movie side when he directed and produced 2022’s The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds and Walker Scobell, which was another major success for the original streaming service. Now, as he continues developing his latest confirmed releases, he also adds a new project to his workload in a reunion with Netflix.

According to Variety, Netflix has signed Shawn Levy to direct a new original sci-fi movie titled Somewhere Out There, which will work off a script written by Max Taxe. Levy is also set to produce the movie under his 21 Laps production company, alongside Netflix’s Dan Levine. The story is being compared to 2016’s Arrival (directed by Denis Villeneuve) and Levy’s previous work on The Adam Project, centered on a grieving father who sends a message to outer space after losing his wife, before something in the stars responds to him.

More to come…
