Grammy-winning singer Sam Smith has finally confirmed their engagement to their partner of three years, Christian Cowan.
After rumours circulated in May that the “Stay With Me” singer is engaged to Cowan, the pair never addressed any of it.
However, in an interview with “The New York Times”, Smith confirmed that the fashion designer is their fiancé.
The 34-year-old singer’s relationship is also the inspiration behind his fifth upcoming album, “Hazel Eyes”, which is also the eye colour of Cowan.
They shared that although the album is inspired by their relationship, it doesn’t mean that it is all positive.
“I feel all types of things all the time. In my happier moments, I can get really sad,” Smith said.
The singer’s album, which is scheduled to be released on August 21, consists of 12 songs centred around their relationship.
“For me, there’s something radical about being queer in this time, in this world and singing love songs.
“I’m not going to allow the poison that I read and that I see to affect my way of loving,” Smith said.
Smith and Cowan began their romance back in 2022 after connecting online. The pair later worked on the music video “I’m Not Here To Make Friends” together.
The couple made their first red carpet debut at the 2026 Met Gala, where Smith also served as Cowan’s muse and wore a feathered ensemble designed by their partner.
In an Instagram post, Cowan explained that the look is a “love letter” to Smith.
“This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration and to my love, Sam,” Cowan said.
Before making an appearance at the Met Gala, the couple were overheard discussing their upcoming wedding at the Mark Hotel in New York.
It was reported that someone who was at the hotel lobby at the same time as the couple overheard their conversation and revealed to the publication that the pair had an intimate engagement.
