Nia DaCosta Discusses the Future of ‘The Marvels’

When The Marvels hits theaters this November, fans will be introduced to the MCU’s newest super hero team. After their powers become entangled, the film will bring together Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau to stop the latest villain threatening Earth.

Due to the team-up nature of the film, The Marvels will serve as a sequel to not only 2019’s Captain Marvel, but also 2021’s WandaVision, 2022’s Ms. Marvel, and 2023’s Secret Invasion.

While The Marvels plot details have been largely kept under wraps, fans have already begun wondering what the future of the film’s three main leads could hold. Will “The Marvels” become a permanent team? Or will its three members still forge adventures of their own?

Nia DaCosta Plots A Future

In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta revealed that she has pestered MCU head Kevin Feige with possible future adventures for all three lead characters. Interestingly, Feige has given conflicting responses to her ideas.

“I’ll pitch Kevin 17 versions of what can happen with all these women, and why and how, and this and that. And he’s like, ‘Okay, girl’, and sometimes I think I’ve really got a movie going after this. And then other times, I’m like, ‘Oh, they have this whole other plan that I’m not a part of.’”

DaCosta, a self-proclaimed “comic nerd,” has often talked about her dedication to Marvel’s lore. The director would seemingly be the perfect fit to continue The Marvels principal characters’ stories.

Captain Marvel Paved The Way

The 2019 success of Captain Marvel proved that female-led superhero films could hold their own. After grossing nearly $1 billion at the box office, Captain Marvel paved the way for future MCU heroines. Subsequently, Black Widow, Wanda Maximoff, and yes, Ms. Marvel, would all get their chance to shine.

When discussing the potential future of women-led Marvel films, DaCosta insists it is all about quality.

“In terms of women-led films and women as superheroes in particular, and excitement around that, I think it’s really just about whether or not the movie’s good. Especially now we have more and more films that are female-led that are action-based or superhero-based. But I think for women-led superhero films, as long as the quality stays up, that’s what’s gonna keep the audience coming back.”

If The Marvels can resonate with audiences this fall, it seems like the MCU will have just scratched the surface of where these characters can go.

The Marvels will hit theaters on November 10, 2023.
