Neve Campbell Declined a Role in ‘Scream 6’ Over an Apparent Pay Dispute

Scream without Sidney Prescott? Well, MTV tried it. And now it looks like the next film in the horror franchise won’t have its longtime leading lady, Neve Campbell. The actor announced on Monday, June 6, that she won’t return to the series because of a pay dispute.

“Sadly, I won’t be making the next Scream film,” she wrote in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. Perhaps hinting at a wage equity issue, Campbell continued, “As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years,” she added.

Campbell appeared in the fifth installment of the Scream franchise, which premiered in January of this year, alongside fellow original cast members Courteney Cox and David Arquette (who happens to be Cox’s ex-husband). They were joined by newcomers Jenna Ortega and Jack Quaid.

The original Scream film premiered in 1996, followed by sequels in 1997, 2000, 2011, and 2022; the sixth installment will be the first without Campbell as Prescott.

Scream 6 is currently in pre-production, with a planned release in spring 2023. In other words, there’s still time for Paramount and Spyglass to make Neve a better offer…Do it for Sidney!
