One of the highlights of the newly released Mortal Kombat II is its script, written by Jeremy Slater. While the movie is accessible for general audiences, it also manages to pack in plenty of references to the complicated lore of the Mortal Kombat video games. Not only are there fun cameos and appearances, but Slater also manages to incorporate the lore into the story, using objects and locations for the games that hardcore fans recognize. It’s this very same loyalty to source material that makes Slater a good fit for DC Studios; he recently said he’d be interested in several projects the studio is developing
In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Jeremy Slater discussed his working relationship with James Gunn, as both creatives are credited as story writers on the upcoming Coyote vs. Acme. That collaboration, paired with Slater’s writing on the Disney+ series Moon Knight, makes him well-suited for another comic book project, specifically with DC. When asked, Slater detailed how the leadership at DC Studios is exceptional, and he shared the characters and stories he is excited to possibly bring to life in their cinematic universe:
“James is very aware of which projects they are. Look, I am on pretty strict NDAs on all of that stuff. What I can say is that I am a huge fan of James and Peter Safran, both as human beings and as creatives. I love them both quite a bit. I love what they are building over there. I know some of what’s coming next and it’s incredibly exciting. They know I am a phone call away on everything, whether it’s, ‘Look at this movie. Give us some notes. Read this script. We want you to write a script. We want you to write a scene.'”
As for how willing Slater is to offer his vision for a story or scene, the writer said, “Whatever it is, the answer is always ‘yes’ for those guys. They know who I love over there and what I would be a part of. If the stars align, I hopefully will get to do some fun stuff. But I really can’t announce anything until it’s real.” Gunn has stated in the past that scripts take precedence in pre-production, meaning that even if Slater was attached to anything, it wouldn’t be made official unless it was completed.
Given how well Slater was able to adapt the lore of Mortal Kombat, the writer seems capable of taking on any comic book character for DC Studios. There are several projects in the pipeline for the studio, with Supergirl and Clayface releasing in theaters this year, and the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, slated for summer 2027. Television projects like the Amanda Waller television show and Paradise Lost haven’t had many substantial updates recently, so it doesn’t seem likely that Slater is attached to any of those.
Having already helped guide Marvel’s Moon Knight, it will be interesting to see if Slater ever gets the chance to contribute those skills to a DC character.
