Marvel Posts Official List of MCU Titles to See Before 'Avengers: Doomsday'

Now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed $2 billion worldwide, Marvel Studios is kicking the marketing for Avengers: Doomsday into high gear. Between San Diego Comic-Con and D23, two new trailers have been released, offering a better look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. With tickets going on sale four months before the film’s release, Marvel Studios wants to make sure audiences are ready for Avengers: Doomsday.

Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, Disney+ has released a list of 15 MCU titles to watch to prepare for Avengers: Doomsday. This list includes four films from the Infinity Saga, one Disney+ series, eight Multiverse Saga movies, and two titles from before the MCU even began. The list includes:

Despite there being 15 titles on this list, there are some notable absences. Although The Marvels featured the return of Kelsey Grammer as Beast ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, the film isn’t on the list. Also absent is X-Men: Days of Future Past, which notably featured the X-Men using time travel to create a new alternate timeline. Even though Scott Lang’s Ant-Man is in Avengers: Doomsday, none of his solo films are featured. Thor: Love and Thunder is also absent, despite Thor and his adopted daughter, Love, being prominently featured in the marketing.

While most of the titles include characters that will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, one interesting addition specifically is Captain America: The First Avenger. The only other Infinity Saga films are three Avengers movies, and neither Captain America: The Winter Soldier nor Captain America: Civil War are included. This suggests the romance between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter will play a much bigger role in Doomsday than many suspected.

The inclusion of Deadpool & Wolverine and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness raises some eyebrows. On the surface, both films are included because of their heavy emphasis on the Multiverse, which will play a big role in Avengers: Doomsday. They could also hint that Deadpool, Wolverine, and Doctor Strange might have unconfirmed roles in the film. Although none of the characters are confirmed, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have teased their involvement at San Diego Comic-Con and D23, respectively. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is rumored to be one of the mysterious masked Latverian figures working for Doctor Doom.

These movies are recommended, but not required, to understand Avengers: Doomsday. As with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, watching the prior films and The Punisher television series might add context, but you can still enjoy the film on its own terms. With 15 titles and four months to go, now is the time to catch up if you want to.
