Star Wars’ Mark Hamill confirms a true story surrounding the London premiere of The Empire Strikes Back and his meeting with Princess Margaret.
Mark Hamill confirms a true story about meeting Princess Margaret at the London premiere of Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. Hamill has been part of the Star Wars saga since its debut in 1977 with Star Wars: A New Hope. Playing the young Luke Skywalker on his journey to becoming a Jedi throughout the original trilogy, Hamill returned to the role for the Star Wars sequel films, which featured an older, more grizzled Luke. The actor has also worked on the Disney+ Star Wars shows in recent years, having been involved with The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
Hamill is also known for being active on social media, often sharing Star Wars stories, as well as commenting on current events. While the actor tends to leave simple comments, they are usually imbued with depth and insight for Star Wars fans who are capable of reading further into them. Hamill also tends to be a common source of behind-the-scenes information, frequently sharing photos and videos with fellow cast members from the various projects he works on, including Star Wars movies and TV shows, voicing the Joker throughout numerous Batman projects, or shows like Invincible.
In a recent post on Twitter, Hamill comments on a photo from Cracked that sees the actor averting his eyes from Princess Margaret’s gaze during the London premiere of The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. According to the photo, Billy Dee Williams, who plays Lando Calrissian in the film, told Hamill that looking directly at British royalty was a jailable offense. The image was posted by a fan who hoped the story surrounding it was true, to which Hamill confirmed the story’s authenticity. The actor said he didn’t believe Williams but thought, “better safe than sorry.” Check out Hamill’s post below:

While Williams ultimately pulled one over on the Luke Skywalker actor, as making eye contact with British royalty is indeed allowed, Hamill himself is also known for having fun with his cast and crew. Hamill has previously posted a behind-the-scenes video showing himself and the cast of Star Wars ribbing director George Lucas. The actor also likes to have fun with Star Wars fans, even pranking them with convention comments and surprise appearances. And while many fans may not know Hamill personally, the actor is known to be extremely kind and personable with audiences.
Hamill is best known for his work in the Star Wars franchise, but he has made a substantial impact as a voice actor. Voicing the Joker for Batman: The Animated Series jumps to the forefront of most viewers’ minds. However, Hamill has also lent his voice to shows like Avengers Assemble, Invincible, Robot Chicken, and Regular Show. The actor may also return to the Star Wars universe, as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka look to offer potential opportunities. That said, despite his many successful past and upcoming projects, original Star Wars stories like Hamill’s Empire Strikes Back encounter with Princess Margaret will always be fan-favorites, giving another fun behind-the-scenes insight into one of the world’s most beloved franchises.
