Live Action SPACE GHOST? – The Last Movie Outpost

Jason Segel is hot property right now. The How I Met Your Mother star has a second season of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty in the works, and is getting good reviews for his indie film turns in movies like The Sky Is Everywhere and Windfall. Next up he will appear alongside Harrison Ford in the Apple TV+ show Shrinking.

Out doing press for Shrinking, Segal let slip that he’s developing a new live-action adaptation of the cartoon character Space Ghost.

Space Ghost (aka Tad Ghostal) was a fictional superhero created by Hanna-Barbera Productions in the 1960s for TV network CBS. He was designed by Alex Toth.

Originally he was a superhero who, with his teen sidekicks, Jan and Jace, and Blip the monkey, fought supervillains in outer space.

In the 1990s, Space Ghost was brought back as a fictional late night talk show host for Space Ghost Coast to Coast, on Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and GameTap, before being relaunched once again as a serious superhero in a DC Comics mini-series.

When he appeared on the 20 Questions on Deadline podcast, Segel remained tight-lipped about whether he’s working on a serious superhero, or a chat show host version of the character.

“There’s a character called Space Ghost who I really loved as a kid. He was like a 1960s superhero. He then was resurrected on Comedy Central as an ironic talk show host. So I wrote a live-action version of that that I would love to make.”

Segel’s resume includes  Knocked Up (2007), Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), I Love You, Man (2009), Despicable Me (2010), Bad Teacher (2011), Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011), The Muppets (2011), The Five-Year Engagement (2012), This Is 40 (2012), Sex Tape (2014), The Discovery (2017), and Our Friend (2019).
