All Of Us Strangers by Andrew Haigh led the Gotham Awards Nominations today, with some love for Celine Song’s Past Lives and a Best Performance nod to Ryan Gosling for Barbie after the indie-centric Awards removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, opening to big-budget studio and streamer fare to submit for consideration.
Past Lives was nominated for Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, Outstanding Lead Performance by Greta Lee. All Of Us Strangers for Best International Feature, Best Screenplay and Outstanding Lead Performance for Andrew Scott and Claire Foy.
The disappearance of the budget cap, which had been set at $35 million, is the biggest change this year.
Organizers said when they announced the change this summer that it was meant “to broaden our reach in terms of recognition and accessibility to the wider community.”
The list was still pretty indie and a number of high profile films did not submit, however, among them Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon and The Color Purple.
The October noms and late November event are industry bellwethers, coming at the start of awards season following fall festival buzz. The awards, set for November 27 at Cipriani New York, will be honoring Maestro by Bradley Cooper and Air by Ben Affleck with new tributes for film and they iconic individuals or milestones they represent.
