Jeanne Du Barry Review – Cannes Film Festival 2023

Jeanne Du Barry is a 2023 out of competition 18th-century French drama that is produced by Maïwenn. Jeanne Du Barry is based on historical events and focuses on the story of Madame du Barry who was the last chief royal mistress of the King of France, Louis XV. The film follows the ups and downs of her integration within the royal family. Despite the slow start, the humorous moments and the aesthetic of Versailles clearly captivated the audience’s attention.

While the lead performance captures the complexity of Jeanne du Barry’s character, the film suffers from pacing issues and a disjointed narrative structure. It meanders through subplots, hindering the audience’s full engagement with the central story. Additionally, the screenplay fails to delve deep into the character’s motivations and conflicts, leaving some aspects feeling underdeveloped.

Despite its flaws, Jeanne du Barry offers glimpses into the captivating world of 18th-century French royalty. Maïwenn’s directorial vision and the film’s stunning aesthetics make it a worthwhile watch for fans of period dramas, although it falls short of reaching its full potential.
