The British character actor Michael Byrne, whose career encompassed film, television, and theater, has died at the age of 82, Page Six has reported. In a prolific career spanning more than six decades, Byrne appeared in dozens of high-profile productions, becoming one of only two actors – alongside Julian Glover – to appear in the James Bond, Harry Potter, and Indiana Jones franchises.
As detailed in The Guardian’s obituary, Byrne began his acting career in minor supporting roles with Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre at the Old Vic in London, and his theater credits include roles in Death & The Maiden, Much Ado About Nothing, and All My Sons. He played Cassius in Peter Gill’s 1980 production of Julius Caesar and in 1971 starred opposite lifelong friend Alan Bates in Simon Gray’s Butley. He returned to the stage throughout his career, most recently playing Romeo in an age-reimagined production of Romeo & Juliet in 2010, before taking the lead role in Uncle Vanya in 2019, demonstrating the sheer breadth of his range.
He was just as prolific in television, appearing in a range of genres playing significant supporting roles in comedies like Yes, Prime Minister, and in more heavyweight, prestigious dramas, such as A Touch Of Frost, Hornblower and his final role, in an episode of the crime drama Strike. He also developed a habit of taking over meaty roles left vacant by departing actors, replacing Brian Cox in Sharpe, and Michael Jayston as George Smiley’s assistant in Smiley’s People. He also made an impression in the popular British soap Coronation Street, appearing from 2008 to 2010.
It’s his film work, however, for which he will most likely be remembered. Over his long career, he played all manner of supporting roles – a loathsome medieval soldier in Braveheart, a naval commander in Tomorrow Never Dies, and an evil wizard in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1. He may have never had a leading role, but he was always a reliable pair of hands, with his clipped delivery and authoritative bearing making him a natural fit for all manner of army officers, aristocrats, and villains, appearing in such prestigious films as A Bridge Too Far, The Sum of All Fears, Apt Pupil, and Gangs of New York.
And yet, for better or worse, it’s his Nazi officers that linger longest in the memory; whether he was sharing the screen with Robert Duvall in The Eagle Has Landed, being the most memorable character in the otherwise forgettable Force 10 From Navarone; and of course, his most recognized role, playing the villainous Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He brings a real malevolent glee to what could easily have been a throwaway part, his startling blue eyes, sadistic smile, and crisp, resonant voice helping to make the character a truly hissable villain. (He also plays a key role in one of the most thrilling sequences of Steven Spielberg’s career, as well as one of the most quotable moments of the film.)
Byrne passed away on Jun. 20. No further details have been made public at the time of writing. Tributes have already begun to appear on social media, celebrating a career that saw him become one of cinema’s most reliable character actors.
