In the Rearview will open CinEast 2023

The full programme of the 16th edition of the CinEast festival (Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg) will be announced at the Press Conference held on Tuesday 19 September 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg (17, Place du Théâtre, Luxembourg-City).

We are delighted to announce that the documentary “In the Rearview” by Polish director Maciek Hamela will be the Opening Film of the 2023 edition. The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival (ACID) and, among other prizes, won the main award at the Sheffield Documentary Film Festival (DocFest). The film’s director is also the volunteer driver of the van which transports Ukrainians fleeing war zones, especially women, children and the elderly. For each of his many passengers, he shares with us an intense and moving moment – a poignant, live testimony that brings us closer to the daily life of people affected by the war. The film will be screened right after the Opening ceremony on Thursday 5 October at 7pm at Neimënster (with English subtitles, on invitation, confirmation of presence is required, press accreditation is possible).

The 16th edition of CinEast, which will be held from 5 to 22 October 2023, will feature over 120 screenings of more than 60 feature and 40 short films from 20 Central and Eastern European countries, an extensive photography exhibition, 6 concerts, 4 film debates, as well as encounters with over 30 guests at a number of venues in Luxembourg City and other towns in the country. Many of the films will also be available online.

Tickets cost EUR 9 (physical screenings) and EUR 6.50 (online screenings). There is a discount for young people under 25 (EUR 6.50 for physical screenings). A festival pass (valid for 10 screenings – in cinemas or online) will also be on sale for EUR 40. Finally, a special ‘fan pack’, priced at EUR 55, will include the festival pass, a t-shirt, and other merchandise. Furthermore, Ukrainian refugees will have free access to festival screenings and most events.

As in the previous edition, festival-goers are strongly encouraged to buy their tickets (or reserve their seats) in advance online via our ‘Eventive’ ticketing engine (cineast.eventive.org), which will also serve as a platform for online screenings (CinEast Online Cinema). The platform will be accessible after the press conference.

The CinEast 2023 festival is organised by CinEast asbl in collaboration with the Cinémathèque, Neimënster, the Kinepolis group, Ancien Cinéma and others. Main partners and sponsors: Luxembourg Ministry of Culture, City of Luxembourg, Film Fund Luxembourg, PwC Luxembourg and Kulczyk Investments. Co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union..
