Grimes is pulling a Kylie Jenner and changing her one-year-old daughter’s name.
In March 2022, the 35-year-old musician dropped the surprise news that she and Twitter CEO Elon Musk welcomed their second child in December 2021. “Her full name is Exa Dark Sideræl Musk,” Grimes told Vanity Fair at the time, though she said they refer to her as “Y.” What else did you expect from Grimes and Musk, who also share a two-year-old son named X Æ A-Xii? They call him “X” for short.
Another nickname for their daughter was “Sailor Mars,” which one fan used after Grimes shared a rare pic of the toddler on Twitter on March 23. However, it looks like the little girl’s name has officially been changed to her original nickname…with a few optional variations.
“She’s Y now, or ‘Why?’ or just ‘?’ (But the government won’t recognize that),” Grimes replied to the fan in another tweet. “Curiosity, the eternal question,..and such.” While Grimes could simply be referring to preferred nicknames, the fact that she mentioned the government suggests the change was more official.

Of course, Grimes would know all about rejected government names. When their son was born in May 2020, he was initially named X Æ A-12. Later that month, however, she revealed the spelling was changed to “X Æ A-Xii” in accordance with California law, which stipulates that baby names can’t include numbers, symbols, or emoji. Plus, she said the name “looks better” with the Roman numerals.
