Greta Kline spent the end of 2021 making TikToks reimagining her Frankie Cosmos songs via Playtronica, a web of wires and nodes that turn practically anything—bowls of water, plushies, tiny spoons—into a synth. Though Frankie Cosmos has been a full band for several years, their output thus far hasn’t strayed much from Kline’s solo work; that’s why songs like “Outside with the Cuties” and “On the Lips” work just as well with only her voice and homespun accompaniment. But on the singles from their forthcoming album Inner World Peace, the band’s instrumentation feels more substantial, bringing in a loose, psychedelic groove that feels like new ground.
Buoyed by a winsome melody and spirited rhythm section, Frankie Cosmos’ latest single “F.O.O.F.” (“Freak Out on Friday”), continues this collaborative streak. Kline is abuzz with anticipation on the power-pop gem: Through faint details, we find her eagerly counting down the sleeps until weekend freedom, and glimpse how she’s filling her time—relatably, with media consumption and light exercise. “What a sight to see before 1pm me listening to 2007 indie,” she sings. The song’s grooving bass line keeps it aloft at every moment; warm flits of piano keys and sprightly drums add welcome texture. As the song ends with an extended jam session, Kline’s lyrics fall away, shifting the spotlight onto the other talented musicians who animate the Frankie Cosmos universe.
