First look at Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Film

Come on Barbie let’s go party! The wait is over with Mattel, Inc. and Warner Bros. Pictures announcing today a partnership to bring the world-renowned Barbie franchise to theaters in its first ever live-action feature film, starring Academy Award-nominated actress Margot Robbie as Barbie. It will be directed by Gerwig from a script that she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. “Barbie” is a co-production by Mattel Films, Heyday Films and Robbie will also be co-producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment Banner, alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara from LuckyChap Entertainment. Barbie marks the first announced deal coming out of Mattel’s newly-established Mattel Films, led by Academy Award®-nominated producer Robbie Brenner, as well as the first collaboration between Mattel Films and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Warner Bros. Pictures teased from their twitter account when the first official trailer for their live-action Barbie movie trailer will be online. Below check out the announcement below!

The film has been in the works since 2015 with Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody. It was originally supposed to star  Anne Hathaway who then passed it to Robbie. The film began production earlier this year and wrapped in July and we had plenty of spoilers from set.

Below please find stills that were provided by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Who will be in the movie?

The film will have an all-star cast featuring Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Fennell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya and Jamie Demetriou, Hari Nef  and Alexandra Shipp will also have supporting roles in the film.

What will the movie be about?

Details have been scarce but what we have seen so far from spoilers is that Barbie will be shunned out from Barbie World and join us in the real world.  Ken who is played by Gosling will end up searching for her and joining her in our world. Margot Robbie said back in 2019: “Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”

Ynon Kreiz, Chairman and CEO of Mattel said: “Barbie is one of the most iconic franchises in the world and we are excited to partner with Warner Bros. Pictures and Margot Robbie to bring her to life on the big screen. We look forward to building on this collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures as we tell the stories of our beloved brands. Mattel Films is on a path to demonstrate the enormous potential of our brand portfolio, as we continue to execute on our strategy of transforming Mattel into an IP-driven, high performing toy company.”

“This project is a great start to our partnership with Ynon and Mattel Films,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures. “And, Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences.”
