As the role of both Jonathan Majors and his character Kang in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains unclear, director Destin Daniel Cretton has now left Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
The upcoming Avengers film is positioned as something akin to Avengers: Infinity War, bringing together a new generation of Avengers to battle Majors’ multiversal villain.
While Majors has already played variants of Kang in both seasons of Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Marvel may not continue his story.
Is Marvel Moving Away From Kang?
The actor was arrested in March and charged with domestic violence. While other entities including the United States Marines and the MLB’s Texas Rangers quickly dropped Majors, Marvel has silently stood by the actor.
Still, with Majors’ trial set to take place this month, Marvel may no longer be able to delay a decision on the actor’s future.
According to MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios co-author Joanna Robinson, Marvel is likely to move away from Kang-based stories instead of simply recasting the role. Additionally, Robinson says that The Kang Dynasty screenwriter Jeff Loveness has also left the project.
“I heard from someone recently … the screenwriter Jeff Loveness, who wrote Quantumania, was supposed to write The Kang Dynasty … anyway, it’s confirmed,” she said.
“I had it confirmed to me he’s no longer working for Marvel. And I asked the person why, and they said the reason why is he was all wrapped up in this Kang storyline. And they are likely going to be moving away from that.”
While Majors’ legal troubles are likely the driving factor behind the studio’s decision to move away from Kang, the failure of Quantumania at the box office may have made that decision easier.
Cretton Still Has Marvel Projects on Deck
While Cretton will not helm The Kang Dynasty, that doesn’t mean his relationship with Marvel has ended.
The director is set to direct the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He is additionally set to executive produce and direct Wonder Man on Disney+
For now, the future of both the MCU and Jonathan Majors remains unclear. What is clear, however, is that a big shift in the studio’s plans is coming.
What exactly that shift looks like, however, remains to be seen.
