M. Night Shyamalan’s highly anticipated new mystery thriller, “Caddo Lake“, featuring Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf) and Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects), has finally arrived. As expected from an M. Night film, it’s a thrilling ride packed with mystery and sci-fi elements, culminating in an absolute emotional gut punch at the end.
What took me by surprise was how trippy and at times confusing the film is. However, the incredibly well-crafted script guides you through the chaos, allowing you to keep pace with the wild twists and turns, all while delivering some jaw-dropping plot reveals. By the final moments, all I could muster was a simple “wow.”
The narrative primarily revolves around Paris (Dylan O’Brien), who is grappling with the tragic death of his mother, who drowned in the lake following a seizure during a car crash. Paris becomes fixated on uncovering a deeper mystery surrounding her death. In parallel, we meet Ellie (Eliza Scanlen), a spirited teenager still reeling from her father’s mysterious disappearance years ago. Her strained relationship with her mother, Celeste (Lauren Ambrose), adds further depth to her character, as does her role as an idolized figure to her 8-year-old stepsister, Anna (Caroline Falk), while her stepfather, Daniel (Eric Lange), tries to maintain peace within the family.
The film employs a dual narrative structure, meticulously detailing the paths of both Paris and Ellie. Initially, their stories appear disconnected, but as the disappearance of Anna forces their lives to intersect, we begin to see the intricate web tying these characters together. Anna’s dissapearance uncovers more than either Ellie or Paris could have bargained for.
As Paris and Ellie explore the lake, both in an ttempt to find their own truths, they discover an area of the lake that acts as a portal through time, this is when things become a little trippy, not only is there already a huge element of mystery in the film but now, there’s a time travel and sci-fi element as well, adding a surreal layer to the already complex narrative. This is where the film truly picks up pace, with both characters oscillating between different timelines. Pay close attention to the time travel aspect; when the twist is finally revealed, the pieces of the puzzle fall into place in a way that leaves you both speechless. While the mysterious forces behind the lake remain largely unexplained, the connection between Paris and Ellie delivers one of those “holy shit” moments well worth the wait. Not to mention a very emotional ending.
