Blue Beetle Trailer Reveals More of the First Outing in the DCU

The latest trailer for the DC outing Blue Beetle reveals a further glimpse at the exciting origin story of the superhero. Released courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures, Blue Beetle finds Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña taking the lead as Blue Beetle makes his debut on the big screen next month. Check out the newly released trailer for Blue Beetle below, via Entertainment Tonight.

Blue Beetle will introduce audiences to college grad Jaime Reyes, who returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.

Led by Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes aka Blue Beetle, Blue Beetle also stars Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood, Thor), Damían Alcázar (Narcos, Narcos: Mexico), Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C., the Predator series), Bruna Marquezine (Maldivas, God Save the King), Raoul Max Trujillo (the Sicario movies, Mayans M.C.), and stand-up comedian George Lopez (the Rio franchise), Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories, Hocus Pocus 2), singer Becky G, and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Monarch, Dead Man Walking) starring as the villain of the piece, Victoria Kord, a ruthless billionaire and business owner who is hellbent on acquiring the Scarab.

Blue Beetle Is Part of the New DCU

Warner Bros.

Following the appointment of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran as the co-chiefs of the rebooted DCU, Blue Beetle’s place in the DC universe was at first a confusing one. It has since been revealed, however, that Blue Beetle will be the first outing in the recalibrated DCU, with director Angel Manuel Soto stating that he envisions a Blue Beetle trilogy.

“We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future instalments of the DCU, but we are not tied to all the films from the past,” the filmmaker explained. “Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. But that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going. Our first movie, the way we wanted to do it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least, and taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first movie to practically be the first act of a saga.”

Thus, Blue Beetle will be part of the same world as the Superman reboot, Superman: Legacy and the Batman project The Brave and the Bold, as well as Swamp Thing, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and The Authority.

Blue Beetle is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 18, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
