Austin Butler finally had first hand experience of Quentin Tarantino’s ritual on set.
As soon as Austin Butler stepped into the world of the entertainment industry, he knew he wanted to work with prominent director Quentin Tarantino. The 31-year-old actor has always dreamed of working with Quentin Tarantino, and he finally had the chance to do so when he booked the role of Tex Watson in the 2019 film Once Upon a Time In Hollywood.
Butler has always wanted to be directed by the famed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and his dream came true in 2019. He said, “I’ve talked a lot about how much Quentin meant to me. It was always my dream to work with him.” Little did he know that he’s in for a treat as Quentin and his crew apparently had some ritual while filming.
The actor shares why Tarantino always film multiple takes on set. He told IndieWire, “We’re on set and he says, ‘OK, we got it. We’re going to do one more. You know why?’ And the entire crew screams, ‘Because we love making movies!’ And the first time you’re there, you’re not in on it. So Brad, Leo, everybody is like, ‘Because we love making movies!’”
Upon starring in the film, not only did he get to work with Tarantino, but he also got to work alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. Although starring in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood did not earn him any awards or nominations, the film has helped him land the most coveted Elvis role in the 2022 biopic. Elvis gave him monumental recognition in Hollywood. He’s won multiple awards for his portrayal of Elvis and is currently in the running for an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.
Quentin Tarantino’s Set is Out of the Ordinary
Butler thinks that working on set with Tarantino is relatively different. The overall atmosphere is out of the ordinary. It made him feel like he’s not working at all despite having to shoot multiple takes. He shared, “There are sets that are so sterile. There are sets where there is no joy. There are sets where people are just at a job, and you’re trying to create something that you’re going to give to the world.”
He concluded, “With Quentin, that was so cool because it just changes the atoms in the room. And then the next time that ‘We love making movies!’ happens, you’re in on it. So every crew new member or actor or whomever, suddenly they’re part of the tribe at that point, saying ‘We love making movies!.’”
