A decade ago, the concept of “forever” was only a loose aspiration to Alex G. He claimed to not love anyone but himself. Drugs were a fact of life. Most crucially, he bemoaned change. Over the years his music has evolved, and seemingly so have his emotions: His narrators have watched romances fade and friends die. His songs have grown to contain bizarre, quietly complex stories that reveal his thoughts about humanity and his own role within it. He seems to have a better idea of what’s important to him.
On “Miracles,” the final single from God Save the Animals, forever is something you plan for: “Infinite futures become a single past,” he sings to a partner over serene, fingerpicked guitars and twangy strings, sounding almost surprised he’s made it this far. He’s spent his entire adult life releasing music; now, he’s old enough to wonder if and when he should reorder his priorities. Although there’s an air of bittersweetness to the song, the singer sounds like he’s learning to have more faith in himself: “You say one day that we should have a baby/Well, right now baby I’m struggling, we’ll see,” he sings. A moment later, he reconsiders: “Well, God help me, I love you, I agree.” The “miracles and crosses” of the chorus seem to reference more than just religion—what’s more miraculous than crossing paths with someone who makes you aspire to better version of yourself?
