Michelle Dockery to play Helen of Troy in new stage production
Michelle Dockery is set to portray Helen of Troy in Ava Pickett’s play Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy. Interestingly, this marks her first stage role in seven years. The play will have its world premiere at Stratford East in London.
In an interview with Variety, Dockery expressed her gratitude over landing the role and said, “Ava is such an extraordinary voice in storytelling right now and I’m delighted to be part of this bold reimagining of Helen’s return from Troy. Stratford East’s history of bringing vital and ambitious stories to life makes it the perfect home for this production.”
Apart from Dockery, Pickett’s Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy will also feature Laura Aikman (The Mysti Show, Casualty, and Waterloo Road), who plays the character of Cee. The play will mark Aikman’s stage debut. The production will be directed by Lisa Spirling, Artistic Director and co-CEO of Stratford East. Jay Taylor also joins the cast.
The story centers around Helen’s first uneasy night home after she returned following the war waged over her. While her husband is overjoyed by her return, her friend Cee reacts differently, while old disputes resurface as the true price of Helen’s departure comes to light.
Michelle Dockery is best known for playing Lady Mary Crawley in all six seasons of Downton Abbey and its film trilogy, including Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. She also received four Primetime Emmy nominations and one Golden Globe nomination for her role as Lady Mary Crawley. Her next project is The Queen of Fashion. Another exciting project on her slate is Pickett’s play.
Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy will run at Stratford East from September 3 to October 10, 2026.
