Jimmy Kimmel Accepts Peabody Award and Thanks His Longtime Creative Team

Jimmy Kimmel picked up a Peabody Award this week and made a point of crediting the team behind the work.

The late night host posted a thank-you on Instagram to the Peabody Awards for the honor. “It was a privilege to stand alongside you,” he wrote, congratulating the other winners and nominees at the ceremony. He tagged four collaborators: Sam Stamler and Dav Borenstein, plus Brendan Patrick Hughes and Matt Flener. The post closed with the hashtag #TruthToPower.

Peabody Awards carry real weight in broadcasting. The organization has handed them out since 1941, recognizing outstanding work across television, radio, and digital media. Past recipients have included news divisions, documentary makers, and entertainment programs that pushed into civic territory. A Peabody for a late-night show isn’t routine. It signals that the work landed somewhere beyond the usual entertainment lane.

For Kimmel, that framing fits. Jimmy Kimmel Live! launched on ABC in 2003, and the show has moved well past celebrity interviews and comedy bits over the years. Kimmel has delivered some of his most memorable monologues on health care costs, mass shootings, and immigration policy. He’s gotten visibly emotional on air during several of those moments. Those segments drew national attention and genuine public response. The #TruthToPower tag in his post is a direct nod to that editorial direction.

“Truth to power” is a phrase associated with holding the powerful publicly accountable. For a comedy program to earn that framing from the Peabody committee, the work has to go beyond punchlines. It has to function as genuine civic commentary, and Kimmel has made a habit of that.

The four people Kimmel tagged are among the collaborators who helped shape that work. Putting their names in the post was a deliberate choice. Kimmel could have accepted the recognition solo and left it there.

The Instagram post gathered 22,134 likes. Peabody recognition tends to draw attention beyond a celebrity’s usual audience, and industry circles track these awards closely.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! has now been on the air for more than two decades. Kimmel has held his time slot through multiple format shifts, the rise of streaming, and a long decline in live TV viewership. He’s hosted the Oscars several times and built a reputation as one of the more prominent network voices for politically charged national stories.

A Peabody adds something that ratings and Hollywood bookings don’t. It’s recognition from people who care specifically about whether broadcast media is doing something meaningful for the public. For Kimmel and his team, that’s a credential worth having.
