Marvel just dropped the first trailer for the much-anticipated film “Thunderbolts“, and it’s already sending fans into a frenzy. With a lineup of characters from across the MCU, thrilling action and some unexpected twists, there’s a lot to expect in this film. One of the most jaw-dropping moments? Bucky Barnes played by Sebastian Stan seems to be attacking his fellow Thunderbolts. So, what’s going on? Could our beloved Winter Soldier be falling back into the grips of…. mind control?
To grasp the significance of this possibility, let’s rewind to “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier“. In this series, Bucky is freed from the brainwashing that Hydra put him under, thanks to Shuri, Ayo, and the Wakandans. He starts to make amends for the chaos he caused as the Winter Soldier, as Buck said in “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” as part of his ammends, “I am no longer The Winter Soldier, I am James Bucky Barnes”. After a long redemtion arc that spanned three films and one TV show, it would be heartbreaking, and yet such a great storyline to see Bucky revert to his old ways. Now although it doesnt look like Bucky will be going bad throughout the film, one scene that certainly packs a punch is making us think that The Winter Soldier, is back—this new trailer raises some serious questions.
In the “Captain America: Brave New World” trailer, we see Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) at a White House event. Isaiah was first introduced to us in “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” when it was revealed that he was the first black super soldier. In “Captain America: Brave New World”, things take a wild turn when Isaiah and another agent hear a high-pitched sound that triggers them and they start shooting at President Ross (Harrison Ford). This suggests that Isaiah might also be under mind control in Brave New World, which could lead to the same fate for Bucky in “Thunderbolts“. “Captain America: Brave New World” hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
Fans on social media have been buzzing about Bucky’s drastic changes. His actions, attire, and overall emotional vibe in one scene which feels eerily reminiscent of the Winter Soldier we saw in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Notably, when Bucky Barnes pulls the trigger in the trailer, he uses his metal arm—even though he mentioned in “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” that he’s right-handed. Fans have been pointing out the similarities online.
HEAR ME F*CKING OUT!
Bucky Barnes, the Bucky Barnes we know would NEVER, EVER agree to try to murder anyone, not even bad guys, WILLINGLY.
Also let’s remember that Bucky is primarily right-handed! Whereas the Winter Soldier predominantly uses his left arm! pic.twitter.com/TFy9c0orjc— Dianne Ramirez (@DianneR_99) September 23, 2024

To truly understand what’s happening with Bucky, we’ll have to wait until the “Thunderbolts“ premieres in May 2025. With so many threads weaving together, it’s clear that Marvel is setting the stage for some serious drama. Are we ready for what’s to come? Only time will tell!
