“Skymed”: A Hidden Gem Amongst Medical Dramas

The news fans have been waiting ages for is finally here, and that is that Skymed is in fact renewed for a second season by Paramount+ and CBC.

The Canadian Medical Drama which premiered in July 2022 soon became a fan favourite with its exciting stories and lovable characters. The show was a hidden gem amongst all other series that came out last year, but one that is sure to be enjoyed by anyone who loves medical dramas and enjoys some action. With new patients in every episode, the show takes on a bit of Fox’s 9-1-1 vibe. This new spin on medical procedurals tackles race, class and relationships in an entertaining and more serious way.

Life, death and drama at 20,000 feet, Skymed weaves together intense character journeys and high-stakes medical rescues, as we follow the lives of budding nurses and pilots flying air ambulances in remote Northern Canada. They’re all in over their heads, and on their own, with no one to rely on but each other.

We were introduced to a team of different, diverse and quite interesting characters in season 1. Apart from all medical drama on the show, we get to see each character’s stories develop, we see the triumphs, heartbreaks and tribulations of the members of the Skymed crew both old and new.

Natasha Calis as Nurse Hayley Roberts, a delivery nurse leaving a secret behind in Toronto. Morgan Holmstrom as Crystal Highway, a Cree/Métis “mama bear” caretaker with a tough-as-nails attitude who is the soul of SkyMed. Praneet Akilla as Jay Chopper, a pilot and engineer who aspires to be an astronaut and faces challenges in his personal relationships. Aason Nadjiwan as Captain Austen Bodie, a hotshot pilot romantically involved with Hayley. Mercedes Morris as Lexi Martine, an up-and-coming pilot who is often forced to choose between her convictions and her ambitions. Thomas Elms as Captain Milosz Nowak, a pilot and bartender whose tough-love attitude wins him many colleagues but few friends. Kheon Clarke as Tristan Green, an empathic, well-liked flight nurse. Rebecca Kwan as Emma Lin, an upbeat and professional ground nurse at North House First Nation, Crystal and Jeremy’s home community. Braeden Clarke as Jeremy Wood, Crystal’s ex, North House’s resident fixer and smuggler. Emilia McCarthy as Madison Van Camp, a local waitress and bartender involved with Bodie. Patrick Kwok-Choon as Dr. Trevor Sung, an ER physician at the local hospital who is interested in Crystal both personally and professionally. Jeff Teravainen as Pierce, SkyMed’s commanding officer. And last but certainly not least, Aaron Ashmore as Captain William “Wheezer” Heaseman. A experienced pilot, who prefers cargo flights over medivac fights. He is the den dad of the pilots and nurses, dispensing advice and grilled meat in equal measure.

The new cast joining the second season includes Sydney Kuhne (“Ginny & Georgia”) as fiery new flight medic Stef, Ryan Ali (“The Hummingbird Project”) as handsome young pilot Reese and Nadine Whiteman-Roden (“Faith Heist”) as Dr. Yana Noah.

This show’s first season has just enough drama to get you interested. Plane crashes, blizzards, wild fires, unexpected pregnancies and more.  Skymed’s second season promises new hookups, breakups and heartbreaks as the medevac service expands into new territory, throwing the flight crew into intense new emergencies at work and in their personal lives.

The series was created by Julie Puckrin and inspired by her sister and brother-in-law who met flying air ambulances.
