“Luther: The Fallen Sun” Starring Idris Elba Coming March 2023

Back in late 2021 it was announced that the popular BBC crime drama “Luther” starring Idris Elba was set to continue with a new feature length sequel film which is premiering this March. Idris Elba and Netflix have teased the date for the film. We last saw Detective Chief Inspector John Luther back in 2019 in season 5, so of course the excitement from fans is palpable.

Idris Elba promises that not only will the film be rewarding for long time fans of the series but it will also be an interesting film for newcomers. “If you watched the last season, it picks up after that. but for new audiences who haven’t seen it I think the film is, it’s a whole story, so even if you don’t know Luther, who he is or what, anything about him, the film attempts to be whole for a new audience,” says Elba.

The official synopsis for Luther: The Fallen Sun reads: An epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for film — a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary. The film also stars Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley, who returns as Martin Schenk.

According to Elba the film “has all the ingredients to echo those classic films of the ’90s” This film “will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther.” Their essential goal behind it is that they “just want to try and take it to a much bigger remit and scale and perhaps international as well.”

Andy Serkis describes his role in the film as his darkest role yet, and that’s saying something for Serkis. “When I first read the script, I almost wanted to throw it in the bin and have a shower, I don’t think I’ve come across anything quite as dark for a long time. And I thought, ‘In fact, do I really actually at this point in the world and time and my life, want to go down this particular rabbit hole of something that’s so hard to fathom in humanity?'” Said Serkis.
