After announcing their much-anticipated sophomore album, 10,000 gecs, over a year ago, experimental pop pranksters 100 gecs did not drop it—instead, they toured the unreleased material for a year and a half, an eternity in the eyes of an attention-deficient online fanbase. Their surprise-released Snake Eyes EP arrives like a mea culpa, coming with the news of an official album release date and featuring their rowdy show opener “Hey Big Man.” The song takes notes more from the Beastie Boys than Breathe Carolina, but “Hey Big Man” is still quintessentially gecs, leaning into the brain-rotting distortion of a song like “800 db cloud.” Laura Les and Dylan Brady yell ridiculous tales of brutally murdering someone by the name of “Longneck Billie” and smoking so much you can’t pronounce “anemone,” and the song coalesces in a cacophonous hell-sound, like if you were trapped in circle of 20 middle-school children shouting taunts. It’s feral and juvenile, staying true to their delightfully irreverent ethos.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this review incorrectly stated that Laura Les and Dylan Brady yell about “Redneck Billie” on “Hey Big Man.” The artists yell about “Longneck Billie” on the Snake Eyes song.
